The Lonely Shining Goblin: Episode 2

Our goblin isn’t used to anyone getting an inside peek at his life, but suddenly there are humans and reapers invading his space left and right, forcing him to let people in whether he likes it or not. Those connections turn out to be pretty crucial, both in making me care about the story, and showing us the very human and hilarious side of the goblin—the one who’s 935, going on 20.

EPISODE 2 RECAP

After declaring that she’s the goblin’s bride, high-schooler Eun-tak follows the goblin through a door… and ends up in Canada, where he’s just portal-jumped from Seoul. Goblin Kim Shin jumps and marvels at the human girl’s ability to follow him here.

She says that she’s made up her mind—if he’s got powers like this, she’s going to marry him. “I love you,” she announces with a giant grin.

He’s taken aback by the sudden declaration, and she teases that he’s putting on an act like he’s never heard those words before. She points out that he’s not actively turning her down. Shin tells her to stop it, but she’s having too much fun at his expense and decides they’re going sightseeing. “Think of it as our honeymoon,” she says as she leads the way.

Eun-tak runs through the streets like a kid in a candy store, zigzagging her way through shops and sights, making Shin dizzy and exasperated. She prods him to tell her that she’s acting very natural and not at all like a tourist, and he doesn’t bother replying.

Shin notices how happy she looks inside a store filled with Christmas decorations, but when she asks him to take her picture (showing him how to use a camera phone like he’s eighty, ha), he doesn’t even look at her as he snaps the picture.

Eun-tak loves the falling autumn leaves, and says that the ones on the ground are a red carpet laid out especially for her. She asks him about a strange street sign with elves on it, and he says that it’s a fairy-sighting district. Eun-tak tells the goblin that he must be very happy to meet a fairy like her, reminding him that she’s Tinkerbell. He tries to temper his scowl and ends up twitching.

She reaches up to try and catch a falling leaf, and starts to tell him that if you catch one on its way down… She turns around and bumps into him, standing there with his arm sticking straight up and a perfect little maple leaf in his hand.

Eun-tak tells him to throw it away, because if you catch a falling autumn leaf on its way down, your love with the person you’re walking with will come true. He accuses her of making that up just now, and she insists that it’s true, just like catching a cherry blossom leaf and making your first love come true.

He asks why she wants him to throw it away when she said she loved him earlier, and she asks again if he’s a goblin. He denies it and asks why she was trying to catch a leaf then, and she says she thought of herself as walking with that oppa over there. “Oppa?” he asks incredulously as he turns to see a handsome young man leaning against a tree.

Eun-tak snatches the leaf out of his hand and runs over to the handsome oppa, only to run back twice as fast, gasping, “Canadian ghost!” Shin just goes on his way, and she has to double back after him.

Eun-tak complains that Canadian ghosts are way scarier because they speak English, and then realizes they’re in a hotel lobby. She gives him the side-eye and says that he shouldn’t be bringing a high-schooler somewhere like this, and Shin comes back with a deadpan “You said you were going to marry me.” He tells her to wait in the lobby while he goes out for a while. She panics about being left alone, and guesses that he’s going to meet a lady friend.

Back in Seoul, the grim reaper meets with a reaper hoobae—also a man in black, with a black hat. He hands our Reaper a black file on a missing person and asks how something like this happens, since he’s never personally encountered a missing person before.

Reaper says that it’s the whim of the gods, which humans mistake for miracles, and what reapers call missing persons. He adds that his case is particularly complicated, since the missing person never had a name, and the hoobae reaper sighs sympathetically about the paperwork involved.

Hoobae reaper complains about reapers having to pay rent and eat when they’re hungry and sleep when they’re tired, finding it unfair. Just then, a woman enters the coffee shop and starts to argue loudly with a man, accusing him of hitting her with his car and trying to run. Reaper dons his hat and heads back to work.

He tells the man and woman that they’ve just died in a car accident, and takes them to his mystical tea shop, where he offers the woman tea that will let her forget everything in her past life. She asks if she has to drink it, not wanting to forget how much she hates this man, and Reaper advises her to: “Oblivion is a consideration from the gods.”

The man asks where his tea is, and Reaper says he should remember every bad thing he’s done, especially since this isn’t the first time someone’s died because of him. We rewind to the snowy night when Eun-tak’s mother was hit by a car when she was pregnant with her, and see that the hit-and-run driver was this man.

Reaper tells the man that he’ll come to regret this moment when he couldn’t drink the oblivion tea, and then he’ll remember why he couldn’t have it, and realize: “That there isn’t one moment you can turn back. And that you are already in hell.” Reaper describes the pain that he will endure, his body torn into shreds daily and nothing but regret on his mind, forever and ever. Satisfied at the man’s future in hell, the woman drinks her tea in one shot.

The man grovels on his knees, but the Reaper points up at the sky at the capricious gods, since it’s out of his hands. He says he knows one person who lives in hell with all of the memories of his past life intact. Reaper says that person probably begged for forgiveness countless times, as we cut to Shin standing in a cemetery in Canada. “But it was no use, because he still stands in the center of hell,” Reaper concludes.

Shin stands at the graves of the Yoo family members who have served him for nearly a thousand years. Shin narrates, “I have buried the young grandson of the grandson of the grandson who left Goryeo with me. There was a time when I thought of this life as a reward, but my life was a punishment. I have never forgotten a single death.”

We see that the young boy who left Goryeo with Shin, Geum-sun, survived the shipwreck (thank goodness), and that he grew up into a young man, and then grew old.

Shin also suffered immense agony from the sword that remained lodged in his heart, and despite his desperate attempts to pull it out and end his life, he could never remove it.

Back in the present, Shin puts flowers on Geum-sun’s grave and asks how he’s been. Shin says he’s been alive all this time, but hasn’t been at peace. The camera pans over to the headstone next to Geum-sun’s, a nameless grave which has a picture of Shin on it, for one of his past identities. Ugh, I can’t help but think it’s where he’d want to be buried when he dies.

Eun-tak waits in the hotel lobby, and finally decides to head outside. She walks up to a nearby park, and discovers Shin at the top of the hill. “I’ve found you,” she says to herself with a smile.

She doesn’t make her presence known, and remains at a distance watching Shin among the graves. She picks up a dandelion and blows the wisps in his direction, and they reach him all the way down the hill, though he doesn’t notice.

It isn’t until dusk that he gets up, and he’s surprised to find Eun-tak there. She notes that his grave is the only one with no name, and asks if he always has to leave the places he’s lived. She asks how many times he’s done so, and he says he’s never counted.

Eun-tak bows at Shin’s grave and introduces herself, addressing the Shin who “died” in 1801: “I’m going to be your bride in about two hundred years,” she declares cheerfully. Shin: “No you’re not.” Eun-tak: “I guess not.”

She says that ajusshi will still be handsome two hundred years later, though his personality is a little mean, and assures him that he “grows up well.” As they walk back, Eun-tak asks if he lived a long time here, and Shin says he’s left and come back, again and again, and that this was the first place he landed after leaving his hometown. She thinks it’s a pity that he didn’t buy the land that the hotel was built on because it could be his by now.

He stops to look at her, and she wonders if maybe the hotel really belongs to him, suddenly very eager to get on his good side. He asks if she isn’t late for school, and suddenly Eun-tak’s face goes pale as she asks what time it is in Seoul. At the thought of her homeroom teacher’s wrath, she whimpers, “Should I just live here? Illegal immigration is better than being tardy, right?”

He leads the way, and they step from nighttime in Quebec to daytime in Seoul. Eun-tak says she slept well, since it feels like it was all a dream. She knows it’s time to wake up now and asks for Shin to forgive her for anything she did in Canada, saying that she was just so excited.

At school, Eun-tak’s nasty teacher assumes that she isn’t bothering with her schoolwork because she can’t afford to go to college anyway. Eun-tak insists that she’s going to college, and the teacher reacts like she’s being defiant. Who certified you, lady?

At the bus stop that night, Eun-tak takes out her Quebec guidebook and flips through the pages wistfully, and pulls out the maple leaf that Shin caught.

She thinks of Shin as a radio DJ says, “When you’re coming home on a rainy night, what is it that becomes your umbrella? A voice that answers when you call, a memory of seeing the same thing at the same time, the first time you matched someone’s pace. Does someone come to mind? Yes, it’s that person. I’m sending you this first song.”

Shin returns home and orders Reaper to follow him for an urgent matter. Reaper warns that it’d better be really important, otherwise he’s dead, and Shin counters that this is a matter of life and death for him.

With that, he storms out the front door and exits into that garden with the buckwheat flowers. Reaper goes out the same front door… but ends up on the front stoop of the house. They both stand around waiting for the other in different spaces, and then Shin goes back the way he came and comes out of the house again.

Reaper finds the whole thing curious, and Shin mutters to himself that the kid managed to do a thing that the reaper couldn’t. Reaper gets competitive and demands to know who did what that he couldn’t do, and says they’ll do it again.

He presses himself up against Shin’s back, saying, “I’ll stick really close this time,” and Shin practically jumps out of his skin. Shin dismisses the reaper as nothing but a monster and tells him to get lost.

Shin’s “nephew” caretaker Deok-hwa arrives and asks Reaper if everything is going well in the house, and if it’s not too humid. He reaches out for a handshake, and Reaper leans away from him, making sure not to touch.

Deok-hwa wonders what to call him, since he can’t keep addressing him as New Tenant, and decides on Last Room Uncle, since he’s got the room at the end of the hall. He asks Last Room Uncle to do him a favor and lie to Grandpa about living here, because Deok-hwa knows he’ll be in trouble for renting out the house.

Eun-tak returns to the same door that led her through the portal, and pleads for Canada to still be on the other side. But it’s no longer a portal and she just ends up in the restroom, where fairy godmother Samshin Granny (still in her beautiful young lady guise) is washing up.

Eun-tak doesn’t recognize her, but Samshin Granny takes in her appearance and asks if she’s a senior, pretending that it’s the tired eyeballs and the uniform that were a giveaway. Granny hands Eun-tak a bag of spinach and tells her to share it with her family.

Eun-tak is met with more abuse when she gets home, and Aunt snaps at her to hurry up and cook them dinner. Eun-tak sighs at the empty fridge and remembers the spinach, so she rolls some kimbap.

Her cousin comes running out to tattle on Eun-tak when she discovers the Quebec guidebook in her bag, and Aunt whaps her over the head repeatedly with it, accusing Eun-tak of planning a getaway with Mom’s insurance payout. Eun-tak cries that it’s just a memento.

Aunt is distracted for a moment when one cousin goes to cut the kimbap and cuts her own finger instead, and then the other cousin takes a bite and immediately starts to choke. Aunt runs over to her kids, and Eun-tak grabs her guidebook and dinner before running out the door. She sits outside trying not to cry, alternating between mouthfuls of kimbap and wiping her tears away.

Shin lies awake in bed going over what he knows about Eun-tak—she has the ability to summon him and can follow him through portal doors, but she can’t see the sword in his chest.

He wonders what she is, and then suddenly remembers her “I love you” and says aloud in his formal old-timey speech, “Moreover, if she meant those words, it is most vexing.” His foot shakes and his teeth rattle, and he finally darts up in bed and declares that curiosity always defeats dignity. Ha.

He tosses dignity aside and shows up in the street where Eun-tak is pacing back and forth. He stammers that he’s very busy and acts like he’s totally put out that she summoned him here, and Eun-tak says she really didn’t summon him this time. Cue awkward silence.

He lies through his teeth that she called him here, and asks if she wasn’t thinking about him just now. He looks nervous as he waits for her answer, but she confirms that she was, and Shin runs with it.

Eun-tak asks if merely thinking of him will summon him too, and Shin mumbles that the rules aren’t really clear, but he’s very sensitive to these things. He asks the nature of her thoughts about him, and Eun-tak says that she thought she’d be happy living in Canada, and that made her think of him.

She says that he was wearing expensive clothes and might even own that hotel, but she’d wondered why he looked so sad. Shin doesn’t answer, and instead asks why she’s pacing around so late at night. Eun-tak says she’s waiting for her family to fall asleep. Shin walks with her for a while and says that he’s walking to digest his food, so she shouldn’t misunderstand. She points out that he’s said that three times already.

Across the street, Eun-tak’s mean-girl classmate sees them and texts her friend to say that Eun-tak is with a man in his thirties, who must be her sugar daddy. She gets ready to take a picture of them, when suddenly the car door she’s standing behind shoots open and knocks her off her feet. The girl is about to complain to the person inside the car… except there’s no person inside. Shin doesn’t even glance her way, and the girl runs crying home to mommy.

Eun-tak continues her job search, and walks inside yet another chicken shop (the help wanted sign at this one says they’re looking for “someone who will be like family”). She’s immediately struck by the beautiful woman sitting inside the empty restaurant—this is SUNNY (Yoo Inna), who tosses her hair expertly and then asks if Eun-tak wants chicken to-go.

Eun-tak says she’s here for the part-time job, and Sunny tells her to sit, though she says that she can’t remember the last time she’s had a customer. Sunny is a bit odd, only half-listening to Eun-tak and mostly sighing over and over about how she can’t remember the last time someone ordered a chicken or asked for more radish.

Sunny asks direct questions like, “Are you poor?” and when Eun-tak says she’s a senior in high school, Sunny just says it must be nice to be young. It’s like she has no linking logic between her thoughts, and Eun-tak can barely keep up with the changing conversation.

For no discernable reason, Sunny declares that today will be their Day One, and gives Eun-tak the job. Eun-tak leaps from her chair, overjoyed, while Sunny just sighs dispassionately over the lack of customers for the millionth time.

Eun-tak clutches her new nametag happily and thinks about Shin, calling out to him in her thoughts. She whirls around expecting him to show up, but he doesn’t, so she resorts to lighting a match and blowing it out.

Shin appears before her, steak on a fork, mouth hanging open mid-bite. She marvels at the expensive food he eats, and he asks if she can’t call and make appointments like a normal person, and think of him. He means for her to be considerate, but she changes the meaning and complains that thinking of him didn’t work this time.

Eun-tak adds that she’s interested in promising the future though, and says again, “I love you!” Shin bites into his steak and stomps off.

When Shin returns to the house waving his fork in the air, Reaper watches him warily and decides that he must be crazy. Reaper goes through a whole ritual to climb into bed that night, but it’s ruined anyway when Shin bursts into the room and frightens him.

Out of breath, Shin asks if this outfit is better than the one he was just wearing, and Reaper can’t tell that he changed clothes at all. Neither can I, pfft. Shin holds up a book and asks, completely straight-faced, “Does this book go with this outfit? She’s going to keep summoning me, and no matter when or where, I want to appear smart and flawless.” Hahahahaha. This is the best.

Reaper asks who this person is, but Shin just tells him to focus and imagine that it’ll be the outfit he wears to leave this house in, and suddenly Reaper perks up and gives him an enthusiastic two thumbs-up.

Shin moves on to modeling CD vs. record, wanting to know if it’s better to go with classical or k-pop. Reaper bursts his bubble by saying that kids listen to audio files nowadays. Shin doesn’t even get past the door with his giant paintings.

Shin creeps up onto Reaper’s bed and pulls back the sheet, marveling at how he sleeps like a dead person in a coffin. Reaper wails to be allowed to sleep, and then we fade to morning, when he wakes up with a granny sleeping cap on his head and a flower-print blanket. “I’m going to crush him,” Reaper grinds out.

Shin chuckles to himself, and Reaper comes out to collect his laundry. He grabs a pair of underwear and starts to sing the children’s song, “The goblin’s panties are strong. The goblin’s panties are smelly~”

Shin warns him peevishly to cut it out, but Reaper continues and wonders what you’d have to do to your panties for there to be a whole song about it. “Was it manly?” Reaper leans down to ask. Shin screams at him to stop it, and Reaper just pleasantly returns to folding his laundry.

Nephew Deok-hwa comes by to check on Uncle Shin on a stormy day, and finds him curled up in bed and looking so defeated. In a very dramatic tone, Shin reverts to his formal speech and tells Deok-hwa that it’s time for him to hear the truth about his family and Shin’s tragic fate. Shin tells him not to be surprised, and then takes a deep breath and says, “I am actually…”

“A goblin?” Deok-hwa interjects, stealing all of Shin’s thunder. Deok-hwa says he’s known since he was six, given the whole I-summon-you-gold thing (in traditional lore, a goblin has a magical stick that he uses to summon gold at will).

In flashback, we see Shin sitting before piles and piles of gold bars that he made appear. Little Deok-hwa knew then that Shin wasn’t his real uncle.

Back in the present, Deok-hwa says stuff like this is why he couldn’t possibly not know… and we cut to his view of Shin, floating in the air like a genie. Deok-hwa worries about him accidentally showing his magic in front of others, while Shin is focused on one thing: the fact that Deok-hwa has known he was a goblin since he was six, and has used banmal with him all this time.

Shin floats higher and higher, and lightning strikes in the sky. Suddenly scared, Deok-hwa tacks on a little jondae at the very end to appease his uncle.

At the chicken shop, Sunny is happy at the sudden rainstorm, given that there are no customers anyway, rain or shine. Eun-tak is downcast because she doesn’t have an umbrella, and Sunny offers her one of her many umbrellas, and tells her not to bother bringing it back.

Eun-tak lights up like she’s been given something precious and Sunny finds it odd, but that’s because she doesn’t know about Eun-tak’s horrible selfish umbrella-hogging family. Sunny heads out for a break and advises Eun-tak to play hooky while the boss is away, and Eun-tak looks positively smitten with her.

Sunny goes to get her fortune read by a shaman, who sighs that she’s an orphan with no luck, and warns her against a man in a black hat. Sunny just hopes that the man in the hat is very handsome.

Shin stops Reaper on his way out, and Reaper says he’s headed to the dry cleaners, indicating the “dry clean only” tag on his hat. Shin says, “I’ve felt this every time, but that hat is a very good plan… to look ridiculous in front of the dead for the last time.”

Reaper huffs but says the hat is how the dead recognize him, and also how he prevents the living from seeing him. Shin: “It’s a good thing the living can’t see you. It would be very embarrassing.” Lol, the hat jokes.

Shin is pleased at getting the last word, and then proceeds to sit there with his smartypants props, just waiting for Eun-tak to summon him.

Eun-tak puts a protective coating on her autumn leaf to give as a gift, and her friend calls it old-fashioned. She says it’s okay because she’s giving it to someone old, and when her friend asks if she has a boyfriend, Eun-tak calls it a thank-you gift for helping her get a job.

Eun-tak blows out a match and says that she has a present for ajusshi. But when she looks up, it’s not Shin, but Reaper who’s there to see her. She reaches up to her neck and says she forgot her scarf, just like the last time she saw him.

That’s confirmation enough for Reaper that she can see him, and he stands in her path and says it’s no use denying it. He notes that it took him ten years to find her because she moved (uh, can reapers not use the internet?), and she asks if she’s supposed to die when she’s only nineteen.

“People die at nine, and people die at ten. That’s death,” Reaper says. He can sense someone protecting her though, and asks who it is this time. They both look over, and Shin is standing there.

Eun-tak runs over to Shin in a panic, but instead of hiding behind him, she covers Shin’s eyes protectively and tells him not to meet the grim reaper’s eyes. He looks at her intently, and then lowers her hands and pulls her behind him.

Reaper asks what he’s doing, and Shin says he’s interfering in human life and death, which Reaper calls a big mistake. But before he can say that Eun-tak was supposed to die, lightning and thunder roar overhead, as if Shin is displaying his anger. Shin shoots him a thought telepathically, and warns Reaper to be careful, or else he’ll start to concern himself with Reaper’s life and death too.

Eun-tak suggests a quick getaway and tries to pull Shin along with her, only to bounce right back. Shin says that Reaper can’t take her, even if he’s been searching for her for a hundred years: “No reaper can take someone who said she’d marry a goblin, and before a goblin’s eyes at that.”

Eun-tak’s eyes widen, and she quickly tells the reaper that she’s the goblin’s bride. Sirens sound nearby and Reaper has to get to work, and suggests talking to both of them about this another time.

As soon as the reaper is gone, Eun-tak lets out a shaky breath and says she knew Shin was a goblin. He says he lied about it because he thought he’d never see her again. “Who knew you’d come inside my door, where no one has ever followed me in before?” he asks. We’re not talking about portals, are we?

He says that the truth wouldn’t have mattered because she’s not the goblin’s bride, and Eun-tak asks with tears in her eyes what she is then, when ghosts tell her she’s the goblin’s bride and reapers tell her she should be dead. “What am I?” she asks.

Shin says it’s not his concern and she gets angry at that and accuses him of lying because she’s not pretty enough to be his bride. But he says readily, “You’re pretty. I’ve lived over nine hundred years. I’m not looking for someone who’s pretty; I’m looking for someone to discover something about me.”

He says she should consider it a good thing, because if she had been the bride, she would’ve ended up resenting him a great deal. He says he’s telling her the truth now because he wants her to stop summoning him with false hope, and says that he’s leaving this place soon.

She starts to ask where he’s going, and then declares that she doesn’t care, and she never wanted to be his bride anyway, because she’s only nineteen and she’s not crazy. She starts to walk away and then turns back, but he’s already gone.

At home, Reaper asks if Shin is going to die at last, but Shin says it’ll regretfully have to wait, since Eun-tak can’t see the sword in his chest. Reaper points out that she might not see it yet, or that he might have to be naked first, though he seems concerned about the girl’s age. Then let’s not joke about the nakedness!

Reaper wonders why Shin is protecting the girl if she’s not the bride, and Shin just tells him to let her live since she’s already skated by. But Reaper’s not about to have a missing person on his watch, and says he can’t live with a goblin that’s messing with his work. Shin welcomes him to move out.

Eun-tak decides to read up on goblins, though the only place she can really do that is in children’s books. A little girl comes by to ask Eun-tak why a big unni like her is in the kids’ section, and Eun-tak calls it a background search on her boyfriend. “It’s like Facebook-stalking. You’ll do this when you’re older too,” she explains.

The little girl asks if her boyfriend is a knight on a white horse, and Eun-tak sighs that it’d be nice, scowling at the pictures of goblins on her books. She gets angry thinking about Shin’s words to her and decides that she doesn’t care anymore, and sticks her maple leaf in one of the books and leaves it at the bookstore.

But as soon as she’s gone, a hand reaches out for the book she left it in…

At home, Shin gets up in excitement when he smells smoke, thinking that Eun-tak has summoned him again. He stands up to prepare himself, but then nothing happens. He turns the corner to find Deok-hwa smoking, and he quickly puts out the cigarette and says that Uncle smoked and quit once too. Shin shouts that it was it was 350 years ago.

That night, Reaper comes out wearing a sleeping cap again, thanks to Shin, and asks Deok-hwa what’s going on in the house because it’s suddenly moist and cloudy inside. Ha, this must be what Deok-hwa was referring to with the humidity, because Shin is literally hanging out with a dark cloud hanging over him and glowing a fiery blue.

Deok-hwa asks Uncle to quit before it rains in here, and Reaper deduces that he’s thinking about a girl, most likely because of a marital spat. Deok-hwa is shocked to hear that Shin has a girl and that she’s nineteen, but his only concern seems to be whether she’s pretty. Shin gets mad at Reaper for blabbing in front of the kid and calls him a grim reaper in front of Deok-hwa, whose eyes widen in alarm.

Deok-hwa advises Shin to just man up and apologize if he hurt a girl’s feelings, and suggests showering her with gifts. Shin responds by tying him up on the stairs like a hostage.

Goblin and Reaper head out of the house at the same time, and Shin ends up tailing Reaper all the way to Eun-tak’s house. When Reaper says she isn’t home, Shin accuses him of killing her. Reaper gets wholly offended at the notion that reapers kill, while Shin says it’s also rude to enter people’s homes with your shoes on.

Reaper asks huffily if Shin told Eun-tak to move, and Shin says she moved on her own, satisfied that Reaper can’t find her now.

Eun-tak stays the night at the chicken shop, and comforts herself by saying that Aunt’s house was never her home anyway.

Suddenly remembering something, Eun-tak runs out to the street in search of the ghost that called her the goblin’s bride, and she asks how the ghost knew. She takes her to another ghost, who tells Eun-tak about the night that the goblin saved Eun-tak and her mother. She realizes then that she’d never have been born if it weren’t for Shin. Meanwhile Shin watches over her that night, but keeps his distance.

Eun-tak’s aunt goes charging into Sunny’s chicken shop (momentarily stunned by her beauty, ha) and demands to know where her precious niece is. Sunny doesn’t bat an eyelash at the rude aunt and calls her girlfriend in a fake accent and asks if “oppa” still beats up anyone, man or woman. Aunt goes running instantly, and Sunny’s friend asks if she’s gone nuts.

It turns out that the reason Aunt is so obsessed with Eun-tak’s bankbook and insurance payout is because she has loan sharks after her for debt, and when they hunt her down at home, Aunt swears that Eun-tak’s mom had a hefty insurance plan, but she just doesn’t know where Eun-tak is hiding the money.

The gangsters simply find out where Eun-tak goes to school, and haul her into their car, kicking and screaming.

Over dinner, Shin asks Reaper how he can afford twenty years’ rent on this house, and Reaper says he’s been collecting the money that loved ones leave to the dead for the last three hundred years. Shin thinks it’s quaint to save money, bragging that he has lots of gold, and Reaper sends Shin’s steak flying out the window. Shin laughs and says he just threw out a plate from the time of Louis XIV.

The fight escalates to the point that everything on the table is floating in the air above them, knife and fork hovering close to each of their heads.

The loan sharks rip through all of Eun-tak’s belongings in the car, in search of the bankbook. She notices the driver lighting a cigarette and leaps forward to blow out the flame, but she misses and the lighter falls to the floor.

The loan shark says that either Eun-tak or Aunt is lying and raises a hand to hit her, and when Eun-tak ducks for cover, the goblin’s mark on her neck starts to glow. Shin can sense something amiss and suddenly drops everything.

In the car, the loan shark tells Eun-tak to remember where that bankbook is, because she ought to know that taking a young girl into a remote area can only mean bad things. She screams and begs for help.

Suddenly the car comes to a screeching halt, and one by one the streetlights go out, surrounding them in darkness. And through the fog, two men appear in the street, strutting towards the car in slow-motion, perfectly backlit by a full moon.

Eun-tak looks up to see Shin and the grim reaper, walking side by side to come save her.

COMMENTS

They came together! I mean, I’m obviously glad that Shin came to save Eun-tak, but I’m so much more excited by the fact that goblin and reaper came together. This is the start of a beautiful friendship, and so many buddy cop antics down the road. I can’t wait for Yoo Inna to get in on the hijinks either, because her character is so weird and perfect for the deadpan reaper. But it’s the goblin-reaper relationship I like most so far, because they’re so delightfully petty and childish, but with the power of gods and centuries of life under their belts. It’s also helpful that they’re not so familiar with each other, because it’s an easy way to learn about the two types of mythical beings if they’re testing each other’s limits and getting into pissing contests, over everything from underwear to Eun-tak’s life and death.

Storywise, it’s great to have reaper and goblin at odds over the bride, but it’ll be an even richer conflict if the reaper gets to know her as a person too, and stops seeing her as just unfinished business. The reaper’s presence also adds a nice bit of tension, because I find it curious that Eun-tak isn’t afraid of Shin at all, not even a little, but her reaction to Reaper is very different, and I liked what we saw when the three of them were together. It must just be a winning combination to have goblin and reaper together in any scene, because the three-way bromance with Deok-hwa is great too. I died laughing when the goblin’s brooding turned out to make actual clouds—this kind of metaphor made literal through the goblin’s supernatural powers is what I like most about the show, because it’s funny, but it’s built into the mythology, and isn’t just wordplay.

I’m really glad that the mythology feels rich and full, because I tend to find many of Kim Eun-sook’s dramas written purely around the one glory moment (as in the heroic entrance through the fog, which we’ve seen from her before). But goblins and gods and reapers make for a world with instant life-and-death stakes from the start, and I’m captivated by the lonely lives of these immortals who are stunted by very human emotions. I like the idea that the drama is really about lonely immortals being less lonely with friends, and still having very human needs at the end of the day—everything from rent money, to food, to friendship, to love. The everyday humanness of their lives is what makes the characters endearing, despite their epic powers. You might be an almighty god who can smite thy enemy, but you still become a neurotic little boy in front of a girl who piques your curiosity, and you still seek fashion advice from your roommate for what to wear when she calls. I thought you were cool, goblin, but now that I know you’re not, I think I might love you.

When I saw the drama "Goblin" next to dramas GF recaps on the team dramabeans what we are watching post, I was super excited. Was wondering whether it was true, and it was!

So, I have a question (which probably doesn't have an answer?).
How do ghosts escape the Grim Reaper and wander around? Does he lose track of someone's soul once the soul leaves the death location? When do ghosts decide to stop wandering? Like her mom could bid farewell before going.
And did Kim Shin's soul also wander during the time between his death and his resurrection as a goblin, or did his soul remain within the sword? because no one could tend to his corpse after his death? is that how ghosts are made?
I also just realized she knows her mom died because when she lit the candles... it should leave shadows... mom has no shadow. shivers.
I'm glad it was clarified that it wasn't just the flame blowing out for summoning. He has to also be thought of. the first time she did it, was wishing on the cake and asking in earnest for some divine help. then, she thought of him after chicken shops rejected her and blew the fire out. then thought of him again each time she blew the flame. Am I getting it right?

ANW, forget the lore, in terms of characters, I'm glad that to compensate for old grump goblin, and implacable grim reaper, we've got one perky euntak, and one smartmouth impertinent deok hwa (ironic that because his ancestors have been so servile in the past, his bloodline prospered up until him to the point that he now has the audacity to talk back in banmal to their "master" lol. I know he used banmal since he met the Goblin because he didn't like that Kim Shin was talking in banmal to his gramps, but I still think it's interesting that while his ancestors and gramps all used an archaic form of reverent address with Kim Shin, he compensates their servility all on his own using banmal, intentional on his part or not. his bloodline has come a long way from the small child with coarse and injured hands to a gold-spooned brat who doesn't know how to bow well to others and even give advice on girls. lol.). I've got a feeling Sunny is going to be as irreverent as deokhwa and euntak in her own manner. it's because of their irreverence that the 3 will be able to pierce through goblin and reaper's poise methink.

What I meant was, he got it over it too quickly...among other things.

"among other things" Must be side effect from being concerned mainly with girls. No space in the head to be concerned on other issues and be judgemental. lolz

Speaking of Deok Hwa #2

did the subs get it right when the tombs are all of grandchild of grandchild of grandchild? then what happens to the in-between generation?

Perhaps there were no sons in between generations?

0

Practically speaking, having the servants skip generations probably just adds to the continuity of the service and limits training time. You don't need to replace one perfectly good servant until he his no longer able to serve. At that point, the son would be too old (cutting years off of his time to serve) so you jump to the grandson, who is younger and has more years left to serve.

If you think about it, other than the scary part of trying not to anger your boss, the job would be pretty cushy. The goblin is going to make sure nothing happens to you so you live a long life and takes care of you in style (at least somewhat?)

0

I thought the same that it was Deok Hwa who took the book, but the question is why we saw this scene, was it was important we see it?, does there is more that met the eye with Deok Hwa, or is the book, or is the leaf?.

Also why Eun Tak is the bride is all because she was saved by our moody/lonely Goblin, he gave her life so can can take hers, if she can't see the sword yet is do because she has not fall in love with him yet? I have few more ? Can't wait to discover the answers in weeks to come.

I think Eun-tak is the goblins bride because (like you say), Shin gave her life when she was destined to die. But because he has killed so many in the past, his punishment is immortality. I guess resurrecting mom and Eun-tak means that he is compensating for the lives he has taken. So he is bestowed upon his bride, who can return him his mortality.

0

I KNOW! And this supposedly before Deok Hwa knows about Shin's new crush... Have the generations of assistants been passing down information and now Deok Hwa is a whole lot more knowledgable than Shin suspects?

He's also got Hot Granny on his side, so there's definitely more happening with Deok Hwa than being a hilariously disrespectful grifter.

It is probably like other dramas in that dead people with resentments or unfinished business wander away from their bodies before a reaper appears. Just like Eun tak's mother's spirit wasn't at the hospital when the reaper came for her. She probably returned to the hospital after she delivered her final messages, but other spirits may continue to roam around. Our God of Death seems to be particularly conscientious in his work.

Also was hoping the recapper would explain his picture on the gravestone. Is it for when he dies after he finds his bride? Why was there no name on it? Does he live, age, die and is reborn? Or does he just not age? Why does he disappear and reappear after 20 years? These are things I was looking for in the recap. Somebody please help me with the answer!

Shin appears to be the age at which he was killed (mid-30s). For some presumably supernatural reason, he retained that appearance when he was resurrected decades later and made immortal. He does not age, whereas his mortal human servants do.

To conceal the fact that he does not age like a normal human, he has hit upon shuttling between continents for a couple of decades at a clip and returning with a new identity, presumably after anyone who knew him has moved away or died. That way no single mortal sees him remain the same age alongside his young "nephew," who will grow older and look like his "brother," then older still and be able to pass as his "father," and then finally look like his elderly "grandfather." Lather, rinse, repeat -- ad infinitum. That's the modus operandi I've been able to figure out.

It saves him the bother of fooling around with disguises. Plus, he probably needs a periodic change of venue really badly. Dude's already 935 years old. Sticking around in the same place would be really boring... and lead to terrible localized flooding. ;-)

Required fields are marked *

Same comment. Decades later? Nah.

Methinks Shin was resurrected right after (or maybe a few days after) he was killed. I inferred this from the Grandpa servant apologising for being late because he was ill.

And the first thing the resurrected Shin did was to kill the eunuch who egged the king to declare Shin a traitor and kill him and his family. The eunuch looked the same age as when he was first shown.

My question is who was the dead that was wrapped mummy-like in the scene where Shin said "I am too late." The king? Maybe there will be some explanation/elaboration on this in future episodes?

0

I think the dead was the Queen and he said he's too late because now that he's become immortal and powerful, he can't do anything about it.

0

To dramabliss, I assume the wrapped body is that of the king. I think the Goblin wanted to avenge the Queens and his family members' deaths, and to also demand an explanation from the king. That's how I see it. But I feel that he was resurrected years after he was killed. The eunuch seems to have aged, and for some reason grown a whiter beard.

0

I think he was resurrected decades later because notice that when he goes to take his revenge, the eunuch seems much older. Further, I am pretty sure that the wrapped corpse belonged to the king and that maybe Shin meant that he was too late to kill him with his own hands. I mean, he already knew about the queen's death then why would he think he was late?

0

I understood it completely different from everyone. The wrapped corpse is the King. He didn't say "It's too late" because he wanted the King killed for revenge. Shin is a loyal subject. He meant it as in, he was too late to PREVENT the King from dying. He knew the Eunuch was corrupted and evil and might kill or have the King killed after he was gone. The young King is jealous and fearful and easily manipulated by the Eunuch. I don't think Shin blames the King for the death of his family, but rather the Eunuch who was pulling the strings behind the scene.

0

Thank you!
Your analysis really sounds spot-on. You've given some well explained and logical sounding answers to questions I've had along the way. Mahalo. :)

During the scene where the Reaper was drinking coffee with his colleague (?) in a coffee shop the colleague mentioned 'reapers' so I think he's not the only one to collect souls and maybe a few other reapers were rather negligent in their job, that's why there are ghosts wandering around? XD

yeah, I'm glad it was clarified later that it was more than just "I want to be ur wife bc u have magic powers." I'm glad it's less romantic reasons like he's hot, and more because being the goblin's wife would give purpose and meaning to her miserable life so far. her mother's death is on her bd. she's been orphaned with a crap aunt to raise her, and spoiled cousins. ostracized at school. has received no love at all since her mother died. so I get how she clang to the idea that she was someone's bride. that the cause of her ghost-seeing which has caused her to be isolated from all might have a reason for it. that she hasn't suffered for nothing.

On the flip side, I'm glad the love story is more than "I love you my bride because you will release me from my tragic fate." Our goblin cares about Euntak even though she can't see the sword and can't help him. She doesn't seem to benefit him, but despite what he said to her, he isn't that coldhearted. Saving him isn't the only thing Euntak's good for.

I don't feel the OTP yet, but I can watch the handsome duo giving each other backhanded remarks all day xD. I'll never be tired of Grim Reaper claiming to go to the dry cleaner for a hat and Goblin sneering at his roommate's occupational disease xDD

Lasse Lindh?! OMG. He's the guy that sang those awesome songs C'Mon Through, and The Stuff from Soulmate's OST! No wonder I was hearing something familiar from one of the songs, but couldn't put my finger on it.

Sunny has been going on and on about how the chicken shop has no customer and stale business. If Olive is very strict with advertising, they wouldn't want such negative association with their brand. Okay, I am liking this show a lot in terms of back story, cinematography, history and mysteriousness of the characters. Editing and transitions can improve a bit.

But I am going to be the unpopular opinion fairy, and express my dislike for Eun Tak's character. I commented yesterday on how I was disappointed in the character, but by Episode 2, I outright disliked it. They made her over-the-top bubbly, I felt like I was seeing every typical annoying anime high school girl or watching Cinderella and the 4 knights again.

KGE is a good actress and believable as a High school girl, but that's about it. I found myself fast forwarding all the bits where Eun Tak was speaking on and on and on.

I hope things get better. Chirpy and cute can be done well, and not so contrived, I hope the character growth improves the character.

I think all your opinions on the heroine kind of pulls the line here , you don't like KGE as an actor much ,maybe? Once you said the heroine is too talkative, too cheerful, and again, I wonder if the heroine was somewhat different as a character, would you still like her? Considering KGE acting as her? Sometimes either we like the heroine, or hate her. Like I could not warm up to song hye kyo's character in DOTS, as she always looks like someone who's quite cold inside and out to me. So I would never like her, even if her role is tailor made and is the loveliest girl in the world. So, maybe it's not about the character but the actor?

I've seen 2 films of KGE and absolutely adore her as an actress. However, she got the short end of the stick here with such a stock character role.

My 'thats about it's should have been more oriented towards the character rather than the actor. Yes, she fits the role of a high school girl well, she is doing what is expected of the role. However, with her kind of talent, this role is a disservice and I also expect more nuance from both the writer and actor.

If they made this character more serious, and with more depth, I think KGE could have shined much much more.

Oh I have a better idea of where you're coming from now. Yeah, but may be it's because at the reply of every cheesy statement of ET, Shin is so serious and gravely answers all her questions, with calm and composed manner, I feel they're two opposites, and that's just what clicks for me, I empathize more, maybe because of my clear biased support for the two actors lol, I admit. If both of them were serious, and matured don't know if it would have been better or not. But one thing is clear, Eun Tak is brave and champion of her own, other wise she would not have been staying with that b*tch of an aunt of hers and surviving through all that tease and taunts.
I do understand what you want from ET, but coming from KGE, I'm more pleasantly surprised, since she has been working in films, and has done all kind of genres, like 'muse', so the fact that she can do cheesy too, just makes me more impressed, it's hard work pulling off the cliches too, haha. Also she looks so pretty, and cute. Ha. Okay I will stop now lol.

I think it's all a matter of personal experience. Cause I don't see her chirpiness as contrived or overdone. It's my first time seeing KSE act (I stayed faaaar away from Cheese after seeing all the drama on NB) and I like it so much because I relate with her ET's personality. :D :D :D

I mean, since when is chirpy bad? Screechy or dull would be bad. I would get that. But chirpy? In my mind, unless your personality is like Grim Reaper so you can't stand chirpy, that I would get. :D :D :D Okay, I'm biased because all my group of friends would qualify as chirpy. When we gather together, all we do is talk talk talk, forget everything else. :D :D :D

As a high school student myself, I find that Kin Go-Eun is portraying the character very well. We all feel kinda helpless at times, her with her family and ghost-seeing abilities and me with [insert personal issues], but at the end of the day, we find ourselves clinging to the hope that it'll all work out, and try to live in the moment and hope for the future. Kim Go-Eun's portrayal of Eun-Tak, fresh with vitality and spirit, was exactly that, and it starkly contrasts with the centuries old goblin who wishes only for death. Storywise(logically), they make a great couple.

Lord C, I felt the same way... and am having delayed flashbacks to NAEIL'S CANTABILE. ;-)

The little motor mouth drove me bonkers... and triggered a nearly-forgotten memory: Gag me with a spoon! @1:57 below -- which is probably how Eun-tak would have sounded if she were born about 20 years earlier. Now I can't get it out of my head. Groady!

Frank & Moon Zappa – “Valley Girl” (Barking Pumpkin) 1982
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBPfbsyHABc

Upon further reflection, I think that 9.4 JoyNumberTwo is right on the money about Eun-tak's adolescent vocalizations serving as a baseline against which to depict future maturation. As other Beanies have pointed out, her overly-perky talk and behavior serves as a foil for Kim Shin's measured, formal speech... and also indicates her overcompensation for the sad and frustrating aspects of her miserable existence.

I must be a glutton for punishment because I never fast-forward through stuff like this. I don't want to miss anything, and figure it's there for a reason, even if I don't like it. And, like banging my head against the wall, it feels so good once it stops... I'm hoping we don't have to hear too much more of it.

I think her character is adorable. The unbridled happiness at being in Canada was actually delightful. Those who keep putting her character down for being "bubbly" are just envious of her ability to let herself express joy. As was mentioned, her life has been and still is a very hard one. She grabbed the CANADA experience w/ gusto and literally ran w/it:)

Gong Yoo is doing great! He's fierce, funny, aloof, implacable and tender. Gee, what a well rounded guy. How many centuries did that take? And we get frustrated w/mortal men for...well, acting......normal.

0

Well personally, if I did find myself transported to Canada just by opening a door, I'd probably do the same. Heck, I'd probably be worse and squeal my lungs out. ?

0

Teen girls (and women) DO suddenly get bubbly around cute guys. Even more if she's seeing him as a handsome, rich, escape from her life of misery. Heck, I'm 57 hearts old and if Gong Yoo showed up in front of me dressed as a penniless bum, I'd be a hair twirlin', hair flippin', smiling fool.

She isn't by a long shot a one note character. In Canada she was excited and thrilled by the wonder of actually being somewhere she thought she could only dream about. Have you never felt that feeling of complete giddiness? She acknowledges it to him after they return and thanks him. She was certainly mature enough to sit quietly for a length of time on the hill while he paid his respects. She thinks and empathize with others despite her teasing talk.
She is a young girl who blossoms under the slightest bit of positive attention as she has been so deprived since her mother died.

I've been a mentor for teenagers for about a decade, and have seen enough teens that literally bounce up and down when taken into somewhere that are beyond their expectations. Have seen it also with my own kids, though they're much younger than teens. As for me, I've never found that to be annoying, instead something in my heart just warms up cause it's nice to see them so happy like that.

I actually loved the scenes in Canada. Since it's the place where the Goblin has buried all of his servants/butlers or whatever you call them, it's a bittersweet place for him. To have ET's energy and brightness really adds a nice new memory of the place for him. He's lived so long having to remember all these deaths, when was the last time he really enjoyed where he was at? By association he got to experience, or at least watch someone he kinda cares about (or piques his interest) roaming around carefree and super excited. And once he told her to stay at the hotel, she did't follow him. She let him do his own thing that he wanted to when she could've summoned him back. Even when she did find him she left him to his own thoughts until he was ready. She even apologized after their mini trip was done for anything stupid she did. Some of those Canada scenes made me think of her as an understanding and thoughtful person under that chipper exterior. Her character might be really bright but I don't think she's overly talkative/pushy/annoying. Like others said it might be her way to mask the crap she's gone through but we'll see in later episodes! Who knows though, I may just be overanalyzing everything! LOL

On another note, those scenes were darn pleasing aesthetically though and made me want to go visit again. :)

Also, it seems all of the characters are rather exaggerated. I wasn't sure until we saw Sunny, but she is odd to the nth degree. Goblin mopes so much that clouds form in the house. ET gets extra giddy (like any teenager would) Reaper is super deadpan. ET's family is over-the-top selfish and rude.

I think (actually, I hope) they did this deliberately. If she starts out as this bubbly, naive schoolgirl, it would make her gradually mature as her relationship with Shin also grows. I think they're already starting to show that: when she told him that she thought of how he has everything and yet he still looks sad. The same with her finding out from the girl ghosts about Shin saving her in her mother's womb (before knowing, she felt unlucky; after they told her, she realized how lucky she was to have lived and had been loved by her mom). She starts having these realizations after she gets to know more about him. After watching Shopping King, I've started to think of the lead character's growth from restless puppy mode as the Louie Effect.

I love her to pieces and I am bias when it comes to my favorites but I do understand why you are annoyed by her character and maybe the way she portrays it too.

I think her over-the-top bubbly feels fake because she is faking it to cover up her miserable life. The only time that I felt that she was really happy was when she was in Canada. She was free and far away from her trouble home etc.
That's why she cried over that Quebec brochure when it was taken from her because it was the first time she felt real joy after losing her mother.

I'm not trying to convince anyone to like her. It's good to read other viewers thoughts who are different from my own.

I like a lot this theory about Eun Tak making efforts to be cute and cheer up because she just wants to escape her sad reality. That would make the character 100 times more interesting and I would like to see the moment when she gets really angry and throws the cutesy act by the window.
I am hopeful that we will see some interesting development. They chose KGE after all and I hope it was because they needed a strong actress to portray a difficult role. Let's see what happens.

SLVR,

I agreed with your sentiment from episode 1- KGE can play the damaged, dark heroine so well that her seemingly simple character of Eun Tak (who could have been further elevated with more nuanced depth since there were such great glimpses of potential for it) somewhat seems like a downgrade? However, I was able to get glimpses of a very lonely, deprived, and hurt Eun Tak in this episode, particularly her interaction with the aunt, and see how that mirrors the very loneliness and exasperation the goblin must have experienced for many, many years. I see her chirpiness as a response mechanism to her gratitude (Canada scene), as well as her endurance to be positive in light of sucky circumstances. Her characterization, particularly her over-eagerness, is a representation of her persistent persona, making her quite mature as others have stated. I think this innocence allows for an endearing dongseng-oppa relationship now, so that it can believably morph into a romance later on. I dunno, I might just be holding on to hope that her character matures more but I think you're hitting on something--the show does a great job showing Gong Yoo's silly and serious moments, making him feel 3 dimensional and flawed but with KGE's character, we see small glimpses of her vulnerability and then a crap ton of cuteness that it seems disproportionate and I think THAT leads to what feels like an incomplete, "what could haves" with KGE's character.

I'm finding KGE's character a lovely mixture of cuteness and maturity tbh. I love it that she's cute as peers of her age like bokjoo and bokshil with and underlying sense of maturity grown from her hardships and tragedy. I'm in the minority here but I like the fact that she is portrayed as more cute than tragic for a change. It cheers me up so much to see someone like her tbh.

I feel like I'm seeing deep nuances in her cuteness that others are missing. I find her character's cuteness portrayed with nuances I haven't seen in other iterations of cute heroines. Subtle but there and unique? I don't think her talents are being wasted. She might be good in acting damaged in other roles (I can't judge because I haven't seen her in other works but Cheese ep 1-7) but she's using her acting chops well as a cute with tragic backstory and realism. I'm finding her portrayal super engaging and real, something that can only be done with complexity and skillful acting.

Dear Mary, couldn't agree more with you. BTW, I like ET's character, I can totally relate to her running off her mouth when she's in pain or in misery, wouldn't it be easier than explaining all the crappiness around? And her joy in Canada, boy I was there with her, I can feel her there. I think the directing and writing focuses on the Goblin more than ET, or maybe it's because some people dismiss her as just a teenager, like most adults do? I like to overanalyze too.

Adults tend to do that. Dismiss teenagers and children. Calling them tweens even. And it becomes worse when there is an isolated teenager amongst adults. I still remember that feeling as teenager in a room full of adults. It was like I was invisible like a waitress.

overanalysed can be accepted at certain degree until the purpose is to told others that dislike it "because the one that like her is win by numbers you should surrender and our opinion is right, accept that, we can see better than your"

0

Why so salty.
A character is a complete whole mind and body. You have to understand a character's motivations that might be layered way too deep for the acting to be understood. Hence the analysing and trying to understand.
Also nobody is forcing you to like the character or actor. They are just highlighting the other perspective, that can sometimes be popular opinion.

0

Ahahahaha, I don't know, but I don't fine her annoying at all. She's chirpy, as you say she is, and there's really nothing wrong with that, she's still optimistically aware of her surroundings and knows perfectly well that she is not happy at all as a person. Which is why she is intent on being as happy as she can be whenever she is. Her expressions are not OTT at all, she can be serious when she wants to be, she can be happy wants to. In fact I'd say she's quite street-smart and she certainly knows how to defend herself from her relatives.

I don't mind that KGE doesn't get to portray a nuanced character, because that just allows more room for Eun-tak to grow as the series progresses.

Maybe because it's my first time watching KGE, so I can't make a judgement as to whether her performance in other projects have outperformed her role as Eun-tak. But I'm definitely open for more growth and development in Eun-tak. That's all I ask for from the writer.

I am also curious why she cant see the sword, when she really is the goblin's bride. She can summon him, enter the same portals as him etc. Maybe during thunderstorm or something very disastrous , she might see the sword. I guess, whenever she is in danger, the birthmark on her neck, would glow and it calls for help from the goblin. That is nice.

Wow I could see that happening in future. Yes I'm still a bit baffled why she can't see the sword. At this point the 'goblin's bride' term is sounding like a myth to me. A lot of time eun tak and shin's conversations turn to the goblin's bride, as if she's existing somewhere, but it has to be a chekov's gun at this point. I think the writer would convince us into believing that eun tak is not the bride till some point in the drama, and when we're not surprised anymore, then it will bounce back, and the bride factor would reappear..ok I don't know if I'm making any sense. But anyway the whole fairy tale charm of the drama is quite amusing and just brings another magical charm to the normal daily incidents in the drama, like that time when eun tak was having a rendezvous with the ghosts in the street side.

Swords are phallic symbols too, not just weapons. Saying Shin might need to be naked for his sword to be seen seems a bit Freudian. Talking about a high school girl seeing it doesn't help.

-----------------

So Eun-tak eventually sees the sword and becomes the bride of Goblin. She takes hold of his "sword" -- and has to choose between:
1a: Long happy (for her) life with him while he's still in pain.)
1b: Listening when he says he's happy with her and doesn't want to die just yet.

It is very weird at the same time refreshing to see KGE in a very chirpy role , unlike CITT. She looks totally a different person. And i am loving Eun Tak.

I never found Gong yoo that handsome when i watched his previous dramas. I found him ok from the looks despite him being an exceptional actor. But in this drama, i am swooning over him. Handsome , Manly, Charismatic,. He really is looking so damn good. Why did i not notice this before? He looks so good with those turtle necks and long coats..

Happened to me when I was watching coffee prince.. my second kdrama and first GY encounter..

Up until 5 ep, I kept wondering how nice it would have been if they had just casted an equally talented but better looking man... and oh dear god!.. coem ep 6.. and by ep 10 .. I had turned into a crazy stalker..

In all these years, haven't felt that for anyone.. for a very brief moment I think felt it for Yoo Ah in after 6 flying.. and yes for a briefer time for KHJ post BoF and PK.. but thats that , i opened KHJ's wiki page.. and they have this hideous pic of him with blonde hair.. and I was like.. WHAT!!!

Still don't get the deal about his looks but I have never noticed his acting this carefully. I watched Coffee prince and ffd most of the parts so I never really realised that he acts so well. The sageuk scenes were beautiful and also the agony while trying to remove the sword.

You should watch his movies ,he's one of those actors who can add more depth to the scene ,without even speaking a word ,but by miniscule changes in his facial expression ,I've found the same with lee joon ki and park bogum

Holy moly! I found myself rewinding like crazy to savor GY's (and Yoon Eun-Hye's) deeply-moving performance in COFFEE PRINCE. And cried buckets in the process... which I don't often do.

I recently watched THE SUSPECT and TRAIN TO BUSAN, and GY was wonderful in both. I'm not into horror movies and rarely watch them, but TRAIN is really a character study disguised as a zombie apocalypse. And Gong Yoo is one of the few actors for whom I'd sit through a horror flick.

I would hasten to add Seo Hyun-Jin, Jang Hyuk, Cha Seung-Won, Ryu Deok-Hwan, Yoon Tae-Young, and Eric Mun (in particular in OHYA) Keep your eye on their eyes. CSW and RDH were stunning together in MY SON, which was my first time seeing CSW. I was floored to see him in rom-coms after viewing him in the intense role of a murderer on a one-day leave from prison.

Yoon Tae-Young is utterly phenomenal in his portrayal of a deaf mute in THE KING'S DAUGHTER, SU BAEK-HYANG. I think his voice is heard (in voiceover) a grand total of twice in the course of 108 episodes. His eyes and body language are literally expressive beyond words.

I don't think Eun Tak is like the girl in CITT at all, because I hate the latter but love the former. The girl in CITT, (by this I mean the character, not the actress) somehow annoyed me, perhaps since when she ridiculously sent the guy flying in episode 1. I don't know why, but I like Eun Tak. This maybe all due to KGE's acting prowess because I like her in Cheese too. Heck, I liked everyone in Cheese until the director decided to bomb the show.

Love.. it is so the IT drama
While watching ep 2 .. every scene of GY's kept reminding me how crazy I got for him when i first watched coffee prince (which is like little less over 3 years backs) .. which was my second kdrama ever...

These are solid 2 episodes.. not with the main lead, his leading lady, second lead set up... BUT totally character driven setup. Goblin's story and the others in his life.. his wife, reaper, potential rebirth of his sister (YIN) , chaebol
***********
*GY is still great to look at. but is it just me or the agelines have started to reflect...

************
I can see how KGE has actually put in the effort to make an 18 yr old character come across ( i think most actresses would have gone with their cutsey bubbly act while retaining the voice of their real 25 yr old self , demeanour etc).. so that way i honestly appreciate her effort...

The pouting of lips, the change in voice and tone...

The challenge is... most of us here are already in 20s or 30s or 40s.. so probably at some level we have forgotten how teenagers can be like that (maybe you were the more serious kind but not all are.. there biggest problems are relationship problems :) ) .. Its early stages of youth.. and as I sadly recall all our teachers telling us back then.. the age you will miss.. as you grow up..

So, here's to hoping that the drama is across a timeline and our heroine will grow to one day really marry the goblin and fall in love heads over heels not because he can take her on a world tour but because .. he is who he is..
**********
YIN has lost weight is it.. but man!!!.. she was so cool.. I literallyc an't wait for her and LDW to meet and the hijinks to ensue

Ah... real-life fangirls on korean tv. lmao. Now that u mentioned it, I'm seeing it. I guess in some sense, she might be fangirling over Goblin. I mean, he's the first person ever - not even her mother understood - with whom she can be herself, and talk about weird things and all. Well, asides from ghosts, grim reaper, and Samshin grandmother. But that's different. He's "alive," not out to kill her, and looks decent but doesn't treat her as a weird girl and cares about her, even a little.

You're actually making sense. I thought she looked like an overexcited puppy in Canada but now that I'm putting some thoughts into it, makes sense.
Like she's naturally bubbly, but doesn't have much of an outlet to express it probably. Right? She can't be bubbly at home, or at school, and she can't meet eyes with ghosts. All her bubbly nature is bottled up so it explodes whenever it has the rare occasion to happen. Hmmm. Like when she was worry-free in Canada, or when she got Sunny's approval? Poor girl probably didn't get too much love or cause to be happy in so long.

Agreed agreed agreed agreed, I feel that Eun-tak is really one of the saddest people around. As a teenager myself, I see where she's coming from, because no one will ever give up the chance to be yourself around someone you are really comfortable with. But Eun-tak seems a bit reckless by trusting Shin so much though. Shin is the only person who accepts her antics and doesn't think of her as an outcast, but that doesn't mean he might not have ill intentions either.

Personally, I feel like epi. 2 doesn’t quite have the movie like epicness as seen in epi. 1. Even though it might not really reach the high bar that its set for epi. 1, it still has the flair of a well-made drama, comparable to any other dramas currently airing. So far, I’m enjoying the show.

Anyway, does anyone know where I could access cable dramas tnms ratings?

I'm a little bit sad that I just able to fill in the AGB Nielsen ratings in Goblin's wikipedia page whenever the ratings are released but unable to do so for its tnms rating.

So, whoever that know how to access the rating, would you mind spill the beans? Your help would be highly appreciated as that will enable me to fill in the tnms ratings in Goblin's wikipedia page as soon as it had been released.

So far I love love love this! Mostly because of Gong Yoo - I was a major Choi Han-Kyul fan, and when he removed the sheets from the reapers bed, he made a face that distinctly reminded me of when he removed the bed sheets from a buried Eun Chan! He made the same face when discovering the reaper as well! But aside from fan-girling over Gong Yoo - I also feel like I still have some issues from Kim Go Eun's acting. It still rings a bit fake - like it isn't the cheeriness (although her running around in Canada did feel a little too cartoonish), but something I can't seem to pinpoint. Does anyone else feel this? I'm trying to ignore it, but I do wonder why I feel a little disconnected from Kim Go Eun's acting and character.
But aside from that - I'm excited for this drama. Hopefully the quality doesn't drop - the first episode was truly a masterpiece so..

Maybe it's the directing? I watched her in Eungyo a.k.a Muse and she played a high school student too in that movie and she's really natural there. In fact, her performance gained critical acclaimed.

Anyways, I'm just really awed by the fact that she's once again completely transformed into a different person for this role. ??????

2. Thanks God Kim Eun Sook actually could write something like this, not only cheesy romance with cheesy lines. The plot moves fast and the mythology feels real. I hope this one will stay good till the end.

3. The color palettes, directing, and cinematography are AMAZING!! It's like watching movie and the scenes in Canada are really beautiful! If only we can go to Canada just by going through a door.

He's amnesiac right now. He can't remember his past sins or something. I think I saw a glimpse of this information from the long trailer.

I'm not gonna be surprised if he's actually the king from Goryeo. There must be a reason why the show didn't show his corpse. Maybe it saves it for later revelation.

I also think Grim Reaper is a king in his past life... His name is Wang Yeo right? If I'm not mistaken, during Goryeo era princes or royalty people, their name started with Wang.. (eg. Wang So, Wang Jeon, Wang Gi)

And if you guys see the extended preview, you'll know why I'm saying this.. Something about the grim reaper and the jade ring that the deceased Queen once wear...

Oh snap! Good observation you made there. We're not sure whether Wang Yeo is his original name from his past life though. But let's see...

Yes, Goryeo was ruled by the Wang family. I also there is a reason why we didn't see the king's face instead it was wrapped up and goblin didn't get his revenge.

Maybe, becoming a reaper was his punishment but he doesn't remember for a reason. He'd have to compensate in some ways for the past before there is peace between them.

Required fields are marked *

This is an interesting thought! If Reaper helps Goblin find the bride that releases Goblin from his torment, would that compensate for ordering the general's (and gneral's loved ones) wrongful death(s) in episode 1?

0

@ DramaMama
Maybe that and more?

I understand the king's wrongdoings and his punishment but I don't really get why Shin received such a severe punishment. He was a general who goes to war and he killed many to defend his country. What kind of deities did he also kill according to the narrator?

0

My own assumption

Grim Reaper is the King
Sunny (reincarnation) is the dead Queen if she became old.

If you watch the extended trailer. Sunny and Reaper met when she bought the jade ring and you will see Reaper is shedding tears but he doesn't know why.

So I can say Reaper is the King. I assume he loves the Queen but since she's family w/ Shin, he needs to stand on his orders (I can say that the Queen is Kim Shin's relative or maybe sister even), so as his punishment he became a reaper but will not gonna remember anything

or

he made a deal, because he regretted what he did to the Queen, he ask the one above to let him forget everything and in exchange he will become a Grim Reaper.

----
Also, funny how Sunny's real name is Kim Sun and Shin's surname, Kim too, isn't it too given? LOL

Quick questions:
1. What's the deal with the Grim Reaper wearing the sleeping cap? Is it so the humidity doesn't damage his hair?

I guess he doesn't wear those cap and use floral bed cover on his own though. Goblin did that... to irritate Grim Reaper... LOL. He looked upset when he woke up in the morning... and Goblin unusually seemed so amused in the kitchen.

That's why Grim Reaper got back at him bye singing that Goblin's underwear song.

LOL... how childish. Smile looks good on Shin though... I love seeing him so cheerful...

Btw... what's with the song? Is that song really exist or what? Or Shin secretly loves singing that song and somehow Grim Reaper caught him red-handed? I don't really understand...

I think she is not human as well. Her character reminds me of the gods in American Gods by Neil Gaiman. The old gods who used to be revered are still with us but nobody worships them anymore. They are left alone. She's so gorgeous and she runs a little chicken restaurant; the place should be packed to the rafters with high school boys, auto mechanics, delivery men, office workers etc and instead it's empty. But she complains that she can't remember the last time she had a customer even though she doesn't really seem to care much. Also she's so incredibly lazy! It's like she used to be worshiped and adored as some kind of goddess of beauty and love which probably didn't involve much more than being beautiful and loveable. I think she's more than a purveyor of fried chicken.

I think it's hilarious that the Samshin Granny keeps giving Eun Tak the gift of vegetables. Here, kid, have a cabbage for your birthday. And the idea that some random man is giving her a bag of spinach while she's in her sexy flame red dress certainly makes Eun Tak look very confused indeed.

How about the Kim Triplets from Infinity of Sound who served as a Greek chorus in HYANGDAN? Beautiful and talented... Daebak! They do a couple of numbers in the drama.

That last shot had me legitimately rolling around in my bed, squealing. This drama is gorgeously shot, the characters are fantastic, I am in love. Also, the previews suggest a time jump, which makes me more relieved in terms of the age gap.

I WOULDN'T MIND HAVING A GORGEOUS GRIM REAPER AND GOBLIN AS MY BODYGUARDS? ? ???

The loveliest thing is, as you've pointed out, the fact that even immortal beings crave the same things as humans - love and companionship.

Technically I don't think reaper & goblin are both there at the end to protect Eun-Tak. Reaper will have business with the two loan sharks -- after goblin rips their heads off :)

I actually love the music! What about the scene where Eun Tak blows the dandelion? It was so beautiful, and I thought the music fit perfectly.

After watching this writer's other dramas, I've learned to tune out the music because they have been so overused in the past. But this drama is doing a much better job of balancing out music with the scenes and not hitting you over the head with the main OSTs.

I'm realizing my personality differs so much from many people on here. T_____T
I mean, I don't understand it. I would get all the aggrieved if Euntak had done something actually bad, but she's nice and bubbly, cute and cheerful with a bit of sass to fight back, lots of hurt deep inside, a yearning for a better life, friendly but surrounded by loneliness. She's intelligent enough, but not too much she would feel perfect. She feels so real. I would have loved to have someone with her personality as friends when I was in school. Why would someone like her bug people? I don't get it. T____T Having someone cute like her in my life would cheer me up, and I would want to comfort her too? Why the dislike?

Exactly! I like her character.. She feels real to me.

For me, she is all bubbly and stuff is a way for her to hide all those hurt and loneliness. I do not want to watch a heroine that is miserable all the time. She is being strong caused once she lost it... She gonna lost it all if you get what I meant.

She reminds me of my little sister personality-wise. So unless my sister is fake, ET's real. :)

My sister is the same, always cheerful, but when she's serious with "honest talk-time" she acts exactly like Eun Tak when she's hurts (cf scene when she confronted Kim Shin). You know? Like she might be cheerful, but she harbors some serious concerns too. I used to make the mistake of thinking she didn't have many serious worries, but she once cried her heart out and that's when I realized she had so many complaints over the years she's kept to herself. Like I didn't realize how sensitive and easily hurt she could be, you know? ET reminds me of my little sis when I watch her. :)

I think KGE is doing a fine job as EunTak. Perhaps the folks that are having issues with her don't like the character. That's a matter of taste.

For instance, I understand the purpose of the character Duk Hwa. Yet right now I can't stand him. I find that rapscallion character irritating and the actor does not have enough charm to make me forgive the character's lack of ethics. I realize that my worldview limits my ability to find that character funny or charming.

I would have be be happier if the actor who played the junior Grim Reaper had a more prominent role.

LDW is one of my favorite actor as in GY. Yet, unlike most members of this forum I'm not bowled over by them together as yet. Right now I feel as if GY is doing a great job as the Goblin in his solo scenes and his scenes with Eun Tak.

As much as I love LDW I feel as if he is wearing the role of the grim reaper in his scenes with GY like a coat and hat, it doesn't go deep. I feel as if I'm seeing LDW having fun, rather than the character. However in his scene with the departing souls, I feel as if he is more connected to the characters.

This I know is a minority opinion--and I'm glad others see it differently.

I didn't see DH do anything unforgivable. He's a bit of a self-serving troublemaker but I don't think his ethics are that bad. :) He hasn't treated anyone that badly or acted like an asshole. Maybe bcuz I've been americanized, so I like that he's treating adults like equals. He's not completely shallow either. Someone pointed out in one of the comments on how he defended his grandfather when he saw him being deferential. And he looked genuinely concerned when he first saw his "uncle" being depressed on the bed. I like him but that might be because I can relate with his priorities. Trust me, at 25, men mostly think of girls. :)

Granted, I'm a bit on the extreme end, but everyone in my department is like that. Fellow students are always shocked when they us physics students emailing our professors like buddies. Hahahaha. It's just the culture here. No time for manners. Professors don't care for that, they only give you the time of the day if you have something worth and intelligent to say, not if you have a nicely written sermon. Lolz.

0

Hi @Mark

I might not have been clear about my issues with DH.

I have no problems with his lack of deference. I'm not one who believes in a rigid of age hierarchy. I believe in respect for respect and in avoiding people who shows no respect for other's humanity. Actually I like the child version of him, impudence and all. What I don't like is his dishonesty and seeming lack of moral center.

I understand the character is meant to be a rapscallion; charming and mischievous. But for me the the actor's charm does not make the character's lack of ethics acceptable.

I assume that DH was exhibiting signs of being irresponsible and that his why his credit cards were stopped.

The fact that he rented the mansion for a 20 years without owning it or having permission to do so does not seem charming to me.

I dunno. I'm seeing what Duk-Hwa did regarding the house as finding a fending for himself and his problems. He finds himself in a quagmire and needs money so he comes up with a scheme. I sorta likes his character because he's not helpless and is the type to be able to handle things for himself when he's in a bind. But then again, my morals are questionable. I don't have much problem with lying out of trouble for some reason. I have more problem with lying to badmouth someone. Probably why I fell hook line and sinker for conmen in PU38. :P or countless other characters like that. I tend to like my characters a bit rapscallion as you call it. I love it when they talk their way out of things, or make plans and stuff. pfffffft.

(Technically, I wonder how DH's contract with LDW is valid if he doesn't own the house? GY offered to give the money back but LDW said it didn't matter because of the contract right? or is that a point which will be brought later on to invalidate the contract so that LDW could not take away DH?)

0

I don't have an opinion either way on DH but Yumi is bringing in an interesting point on ethics. if we're talking questionable ethics: aren't the goblin's ethics and actions much more questionable than DH's transgressions? namely DH lying about one thing so far (just the house matter) vs. goblin killing. not mentioning the fact that he killed thousands as a human, as a goblin, he judges and kills people too. his purpose in life is also selfish (finding a bride), and plays super hero only when it conveniences him, on occasion at his whim, rather than on principle when he sees suffering. he's no longer in medieval times either but still goes along with having a serving family, along with formal protocol to accompany the service, when he can do everything himself.

this is purely out of academic curiosity that I'm asking btw, because obviously, my personal feelings for goblin and GY trumps all those things mentioned. I obviously like GY by default so I would choose him over that actor who plays DH any day. I just wonder if it's in us to forgive actions as long as the feeling and thought or character is "right." the reason I'm bringing this up is because there has been just an election in the US, and I'm seeing a bit of a parallel.

0

@Fanyl

It is an interesting question about overlooking bad behavior because you like the person who is behaving badly. This is frequently an issue for me when one of the leads say the equivalent of "leave me alone" and the other half of the OTP refuses to give up. It is easy as an audience member to let it go because we know that he/she loves the person he/she is rejecting. Unfortunately mentally unbalanced stalkers are just as convinced that the object of their obsession are in love with them and wants to be with them. So I'm often torn between enjoying the romantic persistence and being annoyed that the character's right to choose isn't being honored.

Back to Goblin. Although we try to find universal ethics, ethics tend to be a community construct. What is ethical in one time or geographic area is unacceptable in another.

I don't remember the Goblin killing in the common era, and his killings in the historical period, as far as I can discern, happen during times of war. The killing after the war of the political minister seems like an extension of that war. The murder at sea of the passengers seems like the way things were handled in a time of might makes right. But we don't know that all the passengers were corrupt and several innocent souls might with blameless lives might have been killed. The drama dampens our connection with the passengers by rendering them as a undifferentiated mob.

I don't think have a "selfish" desire in life is necessarily a bad thing. It becomes a bad thing if you are willing to destroy others in pursuit of your goal.

The Goblin's supernatural status is something thrust upon him. The extent of his supernatural powers are unknown to me. It makes perfect sense that he stays out of the daily ins and outs of human existence. If there is an overarching god guiding human existence, Goblin does not know the plan for all, so it is best he stays out of it. Really not every good person should be saved. Death gives value to life.

I didn't see/remember the part where Goblin judges and kills people in contemporary times. He lets people die because he doesn't want to become involved with human life. However there seem to be a few human being whose entreaty he cannot resist, i.e. Eun Tak and her mother.

I don't think he interferes when it is convenient for him. In fact I think interfering is a great inconvenience. He does it only when he can't do otherwise.

I don't think having servants is unethical, so long as you pay them properly and treat them with human dignity. Goblin's existence requires servant. I'm surprised he doesn't have a set of servants in Canada. The servants provides continuity, as he must constantly change identity, leave a region for 20 years so he can re-emerge as a new adult he must have someone to help. It's fine if it isn't forced.

DH/his family seems well paid. It seems that as part of the camouflage the family live like cheobals. All in all that...

0

Sowie, butting in your conversation. I think I understand what Fanyl meant about servants. It grates a bit my modern sensibilities. Why does the family has to bow down to the Goblin? Even if he was their benefactor, I was a bit taken aback when the grandfather almost bowed just to apologize for his grandson's impoliteness. Why maintain the archaic speech addressed to the lords with him? Why continue to serve him drinks when he can levitate or burn candles when he can do it? It goes even further than being a simple employee. Intellectually, I get that he's a god but it's slightly hard to swallow.

As for war times, I'm very very very torn about the ethics of it all. On one hand, I'm extremely thankful for the sacrifice of the military men in service of their country. They are displaying a level of bravery I cannot even fathom. On the other, war is bad, for all, no matter how you put it. Soldiers have to kill in order to defend their families and country from being invaded and abused by a foreign power. If they don't kill, their compatriots will be killed. On the other hand, they are killing the family breadwinner, brothers, husbands, sons, bloodline of other people, whose only goal is exactly the same as them, to defend their family and country. The only difference between them is the different clan they are in. Could such an act as killing someone be defended? It's self-defense, but much more complex because the fact that soldiers are the brawn of the politicians' brain. They are not acting of their own 100% will by nature. They have orders. The tragic part of it all, is all wars end with politicians shaking hands. The only people who are left in tatters are the families of those soldiers and civilians who died. From both sides. Can the morality of such a thing truly be justified? And can participants of something like this be at peace morally, ever? Of course, I'm speaking from my high horse because the only thing I know about wars are my parents and grandparents' stories. I've never been in a war. Winners might end up writing history and becoming heroes, and losers becoming the villains, but what about the forgotten families of "winners." What becomes of them who have lost everything, family broken? What about the losers villains and their families? Death of a few is tragedy, death of millions statistics seems so tragic to me. I've pondered on this question for years, and I still don't have an answer. Is killing, without trial at that, morally acceptable? Even to yourself? At what point is self-defense as a nation justifiable? And if you're part of that nation, do you lose your sense of morality as a person? And yet, letting yourself be killed is not a solution either. All in all, I don't want to ever have to choose between taking the life of another's precious someone.

0

Jeeweez. This thread went dark real fast.

"And if you’re part of that nation, do you lose your sense of morality as a person"

Humans have barely evolved from savages. Morality serves to curb some of that savagery away but it's true humans are tribal in nature. In normal times, killing anyone might mean all the things you mention - taking away another's precious someone, even if that another is themselves. All lives are equal, and a human is a human, regardless of race/religion = normal times morality. You'll find morality surprisingly flexible during war though. Suddenly, when you're confronted with your tribe's death and another tribe's death, all lives are no longer equal, your tribes' life > the other tribe's life. It's the only way you can kill without hesitation. People have to lose their sense of "normal times morality." If they debated on whether or not it's moral, they would get killed before they could even find the answer. Sad, but fact. Your humanity gets reduced during war and all your love shrinks from covering all human lives to only the human lives of those your care about, family or tribe.

0

Uh, this is wayyyyy too deep for me. I don't have much to say on the ethics of war. That's asking for brain explosion. I'll just comment that Deok-Hwa's actions don't seem that unethical to me. I would feel differently if he brought people to bankruptcy with his schemes but his mischief is barely harmful given the relative scales of them to his family's fortune. He needs a bit of straightening up, but I don't want him to lose his insolent devil-may-care and resourceful side in the process. The goblin needs someone who doesn't prostrate to him at every turn, even if he can summon a storm. XD XD I enjoy how upfront he is about everything, from his cool acceptance of all supernaturals around him to his ready admittance of wanting to enjoy life. If I had all the money in the world to spend like him. If I could enjoy life as much as I wanted with no financial worries (student debts anyone?), I would not be studying for my finals right now but spend my precious 20s watching dramas and traveling and eating too. I would do all the enjoyable things I can at my age all day long. XD XD XD It's sad thought that by the time I will be able to finish paying my mortgage, I would be too old to have fun. Where's a goblin with a lotto numbers when I need him????!!!

0

Charm is subjective isn't it? It's the first time I'm seeing that chaebol actor and I'm much too old to be taken by a kid his age but I find him charming. Most of my attention is admittedly taken away by LDW x GY combo, especially LDW, but I find that boy's smile rather winning. His screen presence is not as strong as GY obviously, but not insignificant. He's caught my attention in the brief scenes he had. I remember chuckling at his tone in the phone message, or being surprised at his serious demeanor when he lighted the candles (playing his ancestor). I literally laughed out loud too during that second why then showed him tied up. If I was a bit younger, I think I would feel attracted to him. But no worries, LDW, you've got all my heart. :D

0

Charm is irrationally subjective.

What one person finds charismatic another might well find smarmy.

It is quite possible DH will do something in the future what will show his depth and value and will make me see his character in a very different light.

Right now I'm just happy he brings joy to many watching the series.

I"ll be satisfied watching the other actors.

0

@Yumi

I've learnt a new word thanks to you!

I had to check in the dictionary what swarmy meant. :)

(It means "excessively or unctuously flattering, ingratiating, servile, etc." for the record. :) )

Smarmy reminds me of that hateful eunuch but his charisma is near zero. Uri goblin has the most charisma (I'm in love with Gong Yoo, help!!) but he's not smarmy (see what I did there, I tried to use my new word in a sentence :) )

0

are we soulmates? I did the exact same thing (an hour ago)!!! and the eunuch immediately came to mind to me too when I read the definition!!!! so fascinating! and good job using the word in a positive and negative phrase!

0

super late to discussion T_T I'm blaming my boss. ethically, methink the Grim Reaper's are the most questionable. threatening deokhwa's life, serious or not, in exchange for the house. willing to effectively end euntak's time on earth without filling in the proper paperwork first, and without finishing said paperwork the second time. maybe Grim Reapers don't have a concept on how precious life is?

0

I agree with both. I think Deok-hwa is spoiled like the typical chaebol, but not an ass like the typical chaebol we see in drama.

Kim Go-eun is the main reason I'm watching this show. I might even get to finish this because of her. I'm kind of missing her co-stars in Eungyo to be honest. The two male leads here are not even in the same league of Park Hae-il and Kim Moo-yul.
I couldn't finish DotS despite my love for the talented Song Joong-ki. Perhaps it's easier to ride with the fantasy genre. It's still fun even when it's messy.

I'm looking forward to the time jump and hopefully she'd be her real age or maybe her character would be 200+ yrs by then lol. It feels like we are dealing with immortal beings who are in this world because they have unresolved issues that maybe has nothing to do with humans.

While I personally do enjoy the bromance, I think I get where you're coming from. I've actually been having a bit of a hard time following their sequence of scenes because of the editing. I really enjoy their interactions, but I'm not always sure what they're on about, even though I find them entertaining and endearing. Try Panda & Hedgehog (baby soulmates!!) or Protect the Boss (clashing but caring cousins!), or My Love Patzzi (actual #OT3 ending!!) xD

Maybe people dislike the character because such a characterisation has been overused in K-dramaland and offers nothing fresh. It's not because people value calmer characters more, but maybe it's because they're fed up with writers not stepping out of their comfort zone and challenge themselves with a new type of characters and/or personalities and make them work for their story/ plot. There are absolutely nothing wrong with bubbly characters or people for that matter; but there's definitely something wrong with the writers' creativity and, if I must make it grand, their & the societal subconscious perception of what makes an ideal woman/ girl too. People can argue that this is just entertainment, but societal values and expectations and norms can seep their way very deep into what might appear pure fun and harmless as entertainment too.

While I can see the merit in their argument, I have no problem with a bubbly, Candy-like character until she becomes confused, indecisive and stupid (i.e. go about trusting and giving the benefit of the doubt to all the wrong people and lashing out at the very person or people that is outright more trustworthy), or when the writer decides that she needs to be defined in relation to a man. That is where my patience pretty much runs dry.

For me, it depends on the context of the drama that the character is in. I think that Kim Go-eun's character contrasts very nicely with Gong Yoo's in this show. Most of the time I also find the cliche bubbly character annoying, but I think it works here. I also have hope that there is more to Eun-tak than meets the eye.

I feel the same way about the main character with a bad family life in many works of fiction. Sometimes it makes sense, other times it is just unnecessary and trite. In this case I think that Eun-tak's family life has importance. It wouldn't be nearly as moving to find someone who actually gives you the time of day if you weren't deprived of it to begin with. Also, Eun-tak has endured a lot of heartbreak in her life already and I have a feeling she and Kim Shin will connect because of their loneliness.

All in all, I recognize that Eun-tak is the type of character that you can find in many works of fiction, but I think it actually makes sense to have such a character in the context of this world and the other characters that inhabit it.

@Kiera, Yeah, also isn't that how we acted when we were 18? I mean us who have gone past that age lol. At eighteen, we are not daunted by the struggles and conflicts in life, and nothing scares us, even if they do , we are happy for no big reason, like eun tak is. So the frolicking in canada doesn't seem odd, as she's only super hyper by the fact that there is a chance of moving to a country where aurora lives, and where she can live happily without having to worry a bout food and the pain she has to take in heart because of her aunt. I also think we're going to see some more transition period, since we already saw 1998,2006, and sageuk periods all together. The tv premier show also had KGE in shoulder length hair, so may be there would be another time leap.
Eun Tak also reminds me of Tae Gong Shil in master's sun lol. Eun Tak can see ghosts, she's scared of confronting them and she needs protection just like Tae Gong Shil.

And she's a high school girl. Did people forget what high school girls can be like? Why expect her to be super mature at this age instead of allowing her to grow into maturity?

Also, she has already shown depth in character by showing different emotions in her different relationships (family, reaper, goblin, teacher, etc) Isn't that how people are in real life?

I think KGE is dong a great job! I'm rooting for her!

this was exactly the comment i was about to write as well but you beat me to it! i was a little bit annoyed by her cutesy behavior, but only because i walked into the drama expecting a very different character given the material presented in ep 1, but i realized in my annoyance that she IS a high schooler and like you said that she had exhibited sadder, loneliner and more serious sides of eun tak in her interactions with the other characters. this was euntak being happy and excited and giddy (emotions she normally does not experience regularly and appropriate for her age!). and perhaps the awkwardness and purity of her emotions (since they are so rare), is what kim go eun is trying to convey but what some of us may be interpreting as too cutesy.

Because she's immature and clingy, which is understandable given her age.

That moment she complained that the reason gy won't make her his bride was because she wasn't pretty made me(and prolly other people too) realize just how shallow her character is.yep I facepalmed so hard

I'm seeing it more like insecurity from lack of love. I don't think her comment on appearance was something she seriously thought was true. It's more like an outburst of hurt and frustration that she's not loved and acceptable for anyone. She's intelligent, diligent, friendly and nice. She tries hard but if people reject her, then in a society which judges appearance so much like Korea, doesn't her subconscious conclusion that she's not loved because of her appearance make sense?

Same. Far from facepalming, I found the whole scene heartbreaking. Euntak is so vulnerable under all that positive attitude. She has all the qualifications (the ghosts have been telling her and harrassing her for a long time, she has the birthmark) so it must have devastated her to have been rejected regardless by everyone, even her "groom"

Kim shin became more clingy than her real fast in 2 episodes, and he's 900+ years old. if we're talking immaturity, Grim Reaper and Goblin sure are mature, fighting over food and underwear. I love Sunny and YIA to death but she's not exactly more mature than her employee regarding work is she?

I laughed so hard @colleen's comment, because let's be honest, if we're talking about maturity here Eun Tak can take my money. How she handles her Aunt and nasty cousins and her god-awful classmates, if it's anyone with lesser brains they'd have gone the deeper hellhole of wrong decisions. She's a strong teenager who barely gets the love, and if I'm being quite honest at 24, even with all the things I've been through, my insecurity on my plain jane looks still rears it's head once in a while.

OMG this made me laugh. Agreed, colleen! Maturity is not a word I would use to describe most characters in this show. Which is fine by me, it results in hilarity.

Thank you for the recap, girlfriday, but I don't think grims tagged along bc he wanted to help the goblin save eun tak, but more like when he found out where the goblin was going and most importantly, WHO he was going to, he decided to tag along bc of course, he's after eun tak, himself!

I really appreciated your little side comments throughout your recap, btw. I really missed that when I was reading javabean's recap yesterday. I really think it makes recaps more personal and relatable, and it makes the reading process fun, rather than it just being a straight up recap. Just me?

Anyways, loving this drama to pieces already and I don't know how I'm gonna hang on until Friday... probably gonna rewatch the episodes. Gah, goblin and grims are so petty and childish w each other, it's so amusing! Grims is so different when he's w the goblin vs how scary he is when he's hunting down eun tak, which I really hope he does somehow get to know her and gives her a break. There's gotta be a loophole, grims!

Random thoughts abt this ep/fav scenes in no particular order:
1. Was it shin that swung the car door open to hit the mean classmate?
2. I wanna see more of Granny! How did she even cast a spell on the spinach!?
3. Eun tak was so cute running around in Quebec (side note: I'm adding that beautiful city to my list of places to go now) and I was just as bummed w her when she realized she had to go back to her sad reality...
4. Sunny is so odd and "lazy," yet confident and charming, and I'm happy to see that she's an interesting character. I can already imagine her meeting(s) w grims is gonna be a hoot!
5. Grims and goblin's bickering dynamic is such a hoot to watch!
Shin says, “I’ve felt this every time, but that hat is a very good plan… to look ridiculous in front of the dead for the last time.” Lololol and when shin says "it's a good thing the living can't see you. It'd be very embarrassing" lawl, savage. Shin's so mean to him! Pwahaha! I'm loving the hat jokes bc it's almost like they're poking fun at themselves bc I remember some of the fans' comments abt that ridiculous hat before the drama even started

In preview for the next episode ET asks KS to send her "thanks" to Reaper. So who knows who knows, maybe while doing his routine job he was helping to save ET as well. Reaper is not that simple if to notice that he wants justice when he takes dead souls (in first episode) he helped to reveal criminal who killed lady.

Yeah, I can tell grims isn't a bad guy at heart–he's just doing his job, but I really hope there's a loophole so he doesn't have to take eun tak.

I agree with you. The reaper wasn't tagging along with the same intention to help Eun Tak. He wants dead people and maybe one of those lone sharks' time is up.
(Can we have a drama without lone sharks in it?)

2. Who takes food inside the bathroom of all places? Eww... I'd feed those hungry lazies at home with it and summon goblin for a piece of stake.

1. I also thought that grims was there to collect one of or both of the loan sharks, so I can't wait to find out more!

2. Omg yes! Why hasn't eun tak thought of that, actually? I was disappointed that shin didn't offer her some steak, but she should totally have dinner dates w shin sometime! I can imagine she'd want to eat his food everyday, but c'mon, the girl deserves it

Since both of the loan sharks were still alive when goblin and reaper strut down the street, maybe reaper might end up bending the rules for goblin. He's got a lot of making up to do.He's got to help him undo the curse for both of their sake.

Maybe that's the reason why they are living together which I have a problem with because it doesn't make sense.
Their past kind of makes things a bit clearer.

Ommo I am already having a big gapping hole in my heart after watching the first two episodes. Can you image the bleeding that will happen after this drama ends? (Assuming the screenwriter doesn't decide to go down the drain somewhere halfway) The last time I had withdrawal symptoms this bad was Oh Hae Young Again this year. TVN you are definitely doing a lot of things right this year.

In love with this show so far. KES has surprised me this time.
Applause to YIN, I was waiting for her. Now give me Reaper-Sunny romance!
Two guys bickering is totally fun, can't wait for more. The last scene was like movie scene.
And I can't stop thinking that Lee Dong Wook is so charming in this role and all of his expressions are gold. He's so great both in comedy and drama.

Ditto to that bit about KES. Are you sure it's KES? It's not KES's trademark writing style. The cheese is kept to an absolute minimum, and there's actually a STORY going on! She's also that really important deciding factor: just as long as she keeps the quality of the first 2 episodes, we're good to go.

What about the shaman and the countryside ghost that was telling ET what really happened before she was born. They're two of the triplets that the shaman mentioned to Sunny.
And I guess we can expect to see one more incidence of Hwang Suk-jung as the last triplet. I wonder what all that connection is all about.

I doubt HWJ is just a guest appearance in this drama...

PS - I'M SO LOVING THIS DRAMA... I really hope we are not set up for disappointment

I think the grim reaper could be onto something here -- an event must occur before the goblin's bride can see his sword. Perhaps after she falls in love with him or after their first kiss. Which means it would extra tragic when she has no choice but to kill the man she loves.

While I enjoy the cohabitation hijinks, it seems counterintuitive for the grim reaper to continue to live with Shin. After all, Shin did offer to pay Reaper back the downpayment Deok Hwa pocketed.

Did Shin seriously bury Deok Hwa's family at what looks to be a park? Sunny must be rich. Why hire a part-timer when you have no customers? Thanks a bunch for the recap, girlfriday!

Hooked from the opening scene of Ep 1. The directing/cinematography/aesthetics are just so on point *drools*

Also, aside from YAY GONG YOO BACK TO DRAMALAND & LOVING THESE CHARACTERS (well Eun Tak.. I still need time to get over her hyper/too chirpy/talkative moments. I know KGE is an excellent actress, I feel like the character is slightly misguided perhaps due to the director and not exactly KGE herself.. but I DO sense the nuance in her characterization of this high school girl. She's lived in misery, ridicule, sadness, loneliness, etc. all her life and her ONE best defense mechanism is to plaster on that smile and use it to shield herself (she does this best in her scenes with her aunt's family, and she does it REALLY well.) I feel like KGE engages very raw emotion and portrays it better in her calmer scenes. Also, being with Shin/going to Canada is probably the most uninhibited fun she's had since mom died, so that explains the hyperactivity. Just wish she would tone down in her voice tho tbh.

Okay, ASIDE FROM THAT, I AM SO FREAKING HAPPY THAT LEE DONG WOOK FINALLY GOT A GOOD ROLE IN A GREAT DRAMA. I kept rewinding his scenes cuz he made me do a double take. What? LDW? You had that in you?? Ever since My Girl, I've loved him and wanted him to do well. Glad after all these years, he gets this role :D

So yeah, I think he's just outraged that these guys got eun tak and he's worried for her, so he's ready to kick some ass. My mind flashed back to the goblin's outrage and release of his powers on the ship when I saw his bloodshot eyes at the end. I wonder if he's gonna kill those loan sharks?

Who knows, maybe they will address it in the next episode. Dramas can be quite meta at times.

I also like KGE's bubbly character. She's fresh, cute and adorable but not to the point that I want to look away because it's too cringey ( i experienced that to SHK's character in DOTS). Maybe because ET and I are in the same age so I feel some quite of connection with her.

Yo chingooo!! Same. I was worried before the drama that I wouldn't be able to believe KGE as a highschooler because it's my age but she's very natural.

There are two sets of people on here it seems. Those who can relate like us with youth or like bubbly, cute, friendly, talkative, excited, but with our own hardships (all right, so my hardship are nowhere near hers).

And those who can't relate with our age, or don't like people like her. It happens. I've seen many adults glare at me before. Hehe.

LOLZ. Off-topic but your sentence just gave me a flashback. :) I forgot about that feeling, but I remember old people passing by, and giving my group of friends the stink-eye for no reason whatsoever some times. We weren't even loud, just happy, chatting, laughing I guess. Nothing obnoxious though. It's funny now that I think about it. I'm a fully-grown woman now so it doesn't happen anymore. I almost miss that feeling. LOLZ. I'm still young though. ^^ I hope when I become old, I won't be like that but who knows with life. ^^ Perhaps in 20-30 years, I'll relate with those old people more and understand what made them find us irritating. LOL.

I'm no longer 19 but I've been with 19 yr olds and KGE is exactly like that :) I actually believe it's her warmth and cheerfulness that attracts Goblin so much. Imagine if she is an emo lady -- they would be too much the same. Goblin is looking for light and rest -- KGE seems to exude those.

The casting is perfect for this drama, and I am such a huge fan of the four leads (particularly Lee Dong Wook and Kim Go Eun) that I would probably sit through at least half a season even if everything else were sub-par. But the beauty is that it is the opposite of sub-par and these first two episodes have been amazing!!! Very happy drama-watcher here.

I really like what Kim Go Eun is doing with her character; I found her excitement in Quebec adorable (I really cracked up at her swift about turn upon encountering Canada Ghost - it totally makes sense that there would be one as well) but what really moved me was all the scenes after her return from Quebec, because that is the explanation for her unbridled joy. In Quebec she felt safe because Goblin was there, safe enough to go tearing about and to just have a genuinely good time, and to just be a teenager. Because back at her aunt's she's treated as their maid and has to constantly be on her toes, and in school both her classmates and teachers are wholly unkind. And this is quite apart from the fact that she is harassed by ghosts on a regular basis. During the Quebec scenes it occurred to me that there was almost a Harry Potter type parallel here in which she's discovered a whole different reality and escapes there just for a short while, away from her life in the metaphorical cupboard under the stairs.

Also Gong Yoo and Lee Dong Wook pettiness and hijinks are a thing that I never knew I needed in my life, I love them so. I'm wondering if Reaper will subsequently develop amnesia because right now he seems to be quite all right.

This drama has been such a delight, I cannot wait for the next episode!
