I remember I rewatch the episode about jingrui birth story because his story alone can be whole another drama,
about a guy who is born with the destiny and opportunity,
They are making the sequel but with a different cast and story on 2017,
they said the story is about the jingyan grandson and the only cast that come back is probably the little guy who xiaohu helps on the early episode,

I feel bad for Jinrui, he's really a good guy, he didn't even harbor any hatred after that relevation.

I am thinking about watching The Disguiser.

Hu Ge...enough said!

0

@Haha,

the disguiser have Huge/Mei Changsu, Jindong/Lin Chen and Wang Kai/Jingyan,
this is a feat to see them again

0

I kind of want to watch "The Disguiser" because of NIF, but...then again, I loved those characters so much in NIF, and since NIF was the first drama in which I'd encountered pretty much the whole cast, I don't really want to think of those actors/actresses in other roles.

0

I just watched it, because it had a high rating on Dramafever and lots of comments saying it's great. And it IS great, but so long. It doesn't lag either, so there's no temptation to fast forward just to see the plot move. When I would do that for time, I would be so lost.

Save this binge for Christmas break, students! It's got a strong hook and it takes a few days.

Awesome drama, luckily it is available for download on youtube, it's the only drama I have ever binge-watched. Took up a massive amount of space on my phone, but it's all cool cuz it's worth it. Managed to finish it within a week, and then watched it with my dad when it aired on local TV.

I think it might not be everyone's cup of tea.

But if you enjoy political drama with limited love story, I will recommend this drama.

It has less CGI effects than any other Chinese drama, the costumes and settings are also great.

My only complaint would be that Mei Changsu was above everyone's else. It would be great that someone defeated him once or twice.

I made a mistake by watching this drama along with The Legend of The Sea. Hahaha, because I have higher standard after NIF.

@Kietrek,

Thanks for the heads-up. I guess I'll have to use modern dramas for bookends when I finally get around to watching NIF. ;-)

0

I also watched SFD and NiF at the same time and actually had the opposite reaction. I though NiF was beautifully filmed, tightly written and well acted, but the fantasy elements towards the end felt excessive and I thought the ending in general was a bit too tidy. I wanted more messy humanity and less clockwork precision, even though I enjoyed the show overall.

0

@wonhwa

I totally get what you mean. It got a bit draggy toward the end, but I understand why the writer's choice to do that.

I haven't watched SFD, partly because I don't like the main actor. I might come around and watch it later.

0

@Haha--

I'm just the opposite of you.. I watched SFD just BECAUSE of Yoo Ah-In, but..alas..despite my love for the main lead, I prefer NIF over SFD.

Much of SFD is watching the main leads grow into their final end-of-drama selves, so it's necessarily messy and heart-breaking and emotional/dramatic. Whereas with NIF, everyone (apart from Hu Ge's little side-kick, and perhaps the doctor) mostly acts like a fully-grown adult, poised and elegant, with all their emotions under strict control, so cautious and calculating, and not a word out of place.

DB's end-of-year Beanie Poll has us voting for the noblest and most idiotic "noble idiots" in 2016's drama batch... but to me, NIF is the drama with the noblest of everything..even the villains seem to have a stature that is impenetrable. Or, maybe "principled" is the word I'm really after. A'way, NIF's characters made me look at myself, and think about what sort of carriage I bear in my day-to-day life, what relationships of mine I cherish and need to protect, etc... A very thought-provoking, admirable drama!

0

@beanfan

I agree with your points. When the villain died and they trapped the king to approve re-opening the case, I kept thinking about myself. I had done some ambiguous choices in my life and when I looked back, I felt that I should have handled it better. Anyway this drama is such an eye opener hahaha

0

And I thought nothing can top Six Flying Dragons. Now, you really got my interest. I usually don't watch Chinese dramas because I think they are over the top. I think I will watch this one.

0

I was watching Nirvana in Fire while live watching Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart: Ryeo...let's just say MLSHR did not come off very well in comparison, and I ended up dropping it.

Over and over again and still finding new connections. The first time around you have no idea all the little comments and events are actually planned. It's so brilliant and so incredibly beautiful. Not just our actors but the costuming, music, and cinematography. Ugh. I cannot tell you how glad I am that I actually watched it. I heard only good things but it took me a while sit down with it. The relationships are so adorable too.

I think I have to give props to some recappers over here: http://dr-myri-blog.blogspot.com/2015/11/nirvana-in-fire-episode-1-recap.html

I think they may be beannies too!

Just remember that Mei Changsu saved Jing Rui and his family by doing what he did. I remember feeling so heartbroken for everyone but it really pays off in the end.

I couldn't get myself to continue watching after episode 2. I don't know how others could, but maybe because of the all-stars cast and beautiful setting? I could honestly see why it became a hit (cast, famous scriptwriter, beautiful location/settings, hallyu-friendly plot) but I could never get myself to watch the remaining episode. But people do have different preferences :)

I liked it but if you were really not enjoying the first episode maybe it just doesn't suit your taste. There were a lot of things that disparately worked for me and it all added up nicely. I liked the brotherly relationships, like the one between Jin-gu's character and the young street thief, as well as Song Joon-Ki and him. I liked the breezy start of the main loveline, "we're adults and we realize this is probably not going to work even though we're hella attracted." I liked that the action moved to the fictional central European country and played out in a way reminiscent of a Western TV war drama miniseries with this big cinematographic landscape and all the extreme crises unfolding. To me it just felt like this sweeping, really long movie. It certainly had flaws but I felt like the good stuff carried it along.

Hey Gina,

I watched DoTS and enjoyed it. I don't consider it the best drama I've ever watched nor the best of 2016. But it was an easy watch and kept me engaged.

However, I believe the Korean audience, who are the ones who really count since it is a kdrama, loved it very much and consider it quite award worthy.

I like that DoTS is going to be aired in Greece. It makes sense, since it was filmed there. But as an international fan(atic), I am rooting for kdramas to spread far and wide in popularity. I would love to see a tv channel here in the US air some of the popular ones. Given that we have a growing fanbase here, it may happen yet...

From the bits that i saw (up to episode 5 or 6) it shouldn't be winning any awards. Not to say that it didnt do its job of being entertaining to many people though.

I watched this a few weeks ago with my mom because she was on break and wanted to watch any drama. I rec this though I hadnt seen it thinking it would fit her taste more and she knows song hye kyo. I heard about the cringe but thought with my weird preferences it should be okay. Oh boy, I had so much secondhand embarrassment. Mainly because this kdrama with awesome camera work, great actors and a high budget has a storyline and situations that are on par with my culture's low budget cringey movies. I would never rec this to anyone again and I dropped it early and my mom dropped it at ep 10.

It did however increase my appreciation of the actors mainly song joon ki, song hye kyo and etc because they at least did their jobs right.

I liked it at the time, but in retrospect, as others have said, I wouldn't consider it to be the best drama of 2016. One of the reasons it did well in both Korea and China is that it promoted patriotism and showed that serving in the military or as a doctor are virtuous professions.

For me, it is first and foremost a melodrama, so you get all the crap that comes with it. There are however some redeeming factors.
--As much as she annoyed me at times, I really liked Doctor Kang; it is rare for me to like a leading lady.
--The budget for this was really high and it showed in the overall production quality.
--The action/fight scenes were some of the better ones I've seen in any K-drama.
--The bromance was pretty good. They played well off of each other.
--This was the first Song Joong Ki show I've seen and he sold me as a military guy. Maybe his time in the military really helped with this.

Sometimes a drama get's better later on and pays off for sticking with it. Other times, it does not and feels like a giant waste of time--that was K2 for me this year. The biggest problem with this drama is the hype train. I'm still learning to keep my expectations modest with any drama I watch to avoid undue disappointment.

if you cant afford to finish until ep 5 (but the most good episodes sometimes were in ep 7 or 8, so it's up to you) then maybe it is not your cup of tea. i like DOTS and it is on my top 5 list of 2016's best/good drama.

i like the bromance and all the giddiness. im not really a fan of "love triangle" scenes but DOTS did not push the idea of it in this drama so i enjoyed it.

at some point, this drama deserves an award too. i think every drama should be for the effort to wrap it up despite of all criticisms and low ratings though.

It made me fall in love with Song Joong-ki, but I dropped it around episode 7. I couldn't take the bad writing anymore, and the sense that the armed conflict was being used as a backdrop for two pretty people falling in love. And I never forgave the female lead for throwing a tantrum and leaving the male lead without a car and forced to walk back to camp IN A WAR ZONE, where it had already been established that a lot of the land was riddled with mines.

DOTS is a very pretty drama to watch: pretty landscapes and lots of pretty people. I especially rooted for the second couple (Jin Gu and Kim Ji Won); their story was about love, respect, and honour. I also liked the soldier bromance among the leads and with puppy (Kim Min Suk) and wish there had been more of that. There was some really funny moments too.

Episodes 7-8 were probably the best. I got increasingly frustrated with the way they handled the medical aspect of the drama, and by episode 12 it seemed the story had lost steam.

My sister loves it. My friend found it boring and cheesy. My mother didn't want to watch it. I think the music, production and characters made me endure it, and the cheese was bearable. I would give it 6/10 = watchable, pretty, weak plot.

The good thing about DoTS is the main couple's romance. That is painted in vivid color while everything else feels blurred and out of focus. Any time they get out of Korea filming overseas it tends to feel awkward and unrealistic. They don't give foreign actors good dialogue or give any depth or realism to their interactions. I suppose they figure Korean audiences won't know the difference anyway. I confess to having rewatched the main couple's moments together over and over and skipping the rest.

This thread is so helpful since this is my current binge while I wait for episodes of Goblin to drop on Dramafever. So far I'm only on epi. 3, but I'm liking it okay. I find all of the characters pretty likable so far, which can go a long way for me despite cheesy dialogue. We'll see if I make it all of the way through.

@Gina H--

My husband and I couldn't watch past episode 3. I was really disappointed, cos I WANTED to like it. I like both leads, but...I got to the scene in episode 3, where SHK and SJK are sitting in a cafe in the middle of SJK's fighting zone (wherever that is), and they were having a conversation about why SHJ's character chose to be a doctor, and...it was just SO BORING..?

I mean, real life dates DO cover banal topics like why our date chose a certain career path over another, but...I dunno... WHY was the writing and dialogue SO flat??! Then, much later, I listened to a DB podcast or maybe an article from elsewhere on the writer's style, and I think it was JB who said she also felt like the writer had dreamed up these beautiful/spectacular moments to happen in the story, etc., and then threw it to the 2nd writer to draw the connections between one scene and another. So, the story hadn't been the driver of the drama, just a collection of epic moments, which needed story filler to ensure that they would happen.

In the end though, all the lovely lighting and "romantic" moments don't mean squat if the story isn't compelling. It just felt so empty to me, and I'm glad that someone like JB had articulated it so clearly, so I could finally put a finger on what I had only intuited, vaguely.

Though its important to remember that even the lead actor said its more about their love story rather than any epic military/medical aspect. If you're going in with the wrong expectations it will disappoint you.
I liked the two separate lovelines, the supporting characters (Dr Song!) were great and so was the cinematography and OST. It was a light, breezy watch.
It was my 1st KES drama and I was wary because of how much she is maligned here, but I ended up liking it. On the other hand, I cant get into her new show Goblin at all.

Ok - totally non-drama related question. My mother-in-law brought us a jar of honey lemon tea that a friend gave her. She said she got it at a Korean grocery store close to her house but was going to try making it. It was very tasty so I want to try making it too. I found some recipes online saying it is basically just cut up lemons and honey that is sealed up for a week or so.

Do any of you have experience with this? What ratio of honey to lemons do you recommend? And is it okay for it to just sit on a counter or in a cabinet? Or should it ferment in the refrigerator? I don't want to die trying to make this tea! :)

Any ideas or suggestions?

i made it once- laid out cut up lemons in a tupperware and cover with honey, then over time the lemon juice will ooze out. i'd personally put it in the fridge and use it up in under a week. pure honey is antibacterial but lemons contain water, so best be careful. wash the lemons really well or use organic, you dont want to be eating pesticide. or you could also just squeeze a lemon into a glass of water and add honey- it's the same thing.

Koreans use yuja for this kind of tea. That kind of lemon isn't easily available in most other countries than east asian ones. There is a litte mandarin taste to the yuja. If you want to make homemade yuja tea you can use some mandarin and some more lemon. That should be more close to the taste. The ratio sugar:lemon slices should be 1:1. I don't know how to prepare it with honey.

Is it citron tea (유자차)? You can look up Maangchi's recipe. She does recipe videos for Korean food and she's awesome. I haven't tried making the tea but I've consumed two big jars of citron tea bought from a store so far. It's good for colds and keeping your immune system in good condition. :)

Well this week sucked. I came home Tuesday night to discover my TV stolen and the back door open. Thieves had broken into my house (I bought it in July and moved in Aug 1) and taken it and my large android tablet and a Nintendo. I have insurance but the theft was so small it won't recoup me anything really.

Fortunatey they didn't take the Roku 3 that was hooked to the smart tv, or the smaller TV in storage so I still have something I can watch TV and online streaming channels on. And my cat wasn't hurt and didn't run away and that's huge.

So I stayed home Wednesday and cleaned up a bit and watched a lot of Legend of the Blue Sea which I had been saving to marathon on the weekend. The comedy definitely made me feel better.

Speaking of cats & break-ins...

I'm 99% sure my first cat scared away a burglar years ago. For sure somebody dropped a brick near my window -- the window my cat liked to look out of. So best guess is cat came up to window at the right time and startled the guy.

A few months ago one of my current cats warned me of a guy that I think was probably a crook, but he was probably just using my patio to hide. Anyway, I heard the cat hissing, saw that he was looking out the window (same window, btw) and there was this very suspicious looking guy.

So.... I have watch-cats :)

I only saw UEE in You're Beautiful mainly because I stopped watching kdramas after 2008-2010ish and just picked it back up this year. I thought she and JKS stole the show though so was really surprised people think nowadays that she is a bad actress (or more like those translated comments from knetz). The roles she takes seem to be challenging too beyond just trying to get her name out there with the hit cliche dramas. Therefore she is one of the few idols I applaud to have so much work in the acting industry.

0

Required fields are marked *

I second Uee. I sometimes forget she's started as an idol and just see her as a young actress. She isn't the best but at least on par with majority of the other 20s actress out there.

I am watching Night Light right now and even though Lee Yo Won is really stealing the scene Uee is holding up quiet well, her character hasn't had much change yet so there are still chances.

For actor, Ko Kyung Pyo. I first saw him in FBND and I totally got intrigued. Since then, I’ve been following everything he is in and I’m so happy of his success and improvement.
For actress, Park Shin Hye. I remember seeing her in Tree of Heaven and got surprised how she was so good at such a young age, doing romance melodrama very convincingly. Since then, I’ve watched almost everything she was in. It’s great how she has transitioned from a child actress into an adult actress, which must have been really hard.

0

Required fields are marked *

For child actors and actresses transitioning is always hard and lovely to see. For Park Shin Hye I actually lost interest in her because of that transitioning mainly because for some reason childhood parts for most dramas are written soooo well that some of these child actors hard-carries. Roles for adult actresses are so limited and sadly PSH for years seemed to have picked awful ones. I watched only the child parts in Stairway to Heaven for her, same for Tree of Heaven (this kdrama has a special place in my heart though and the ost is beautiful), but You're Beautiful was where she seemed to have gotten typecasted for so many years and I couldnt get past that. Still I think I'm just waiting for the right time and role of hers to make me fall for her again.

Wishing all the best to our young actresses and actresses lost in second lead or even side character roles.

It’s saddening that after YaB she has gotten type casted due to the the success of that drama b/c she seems like she has quite a bit of potential to show more. Her acting career after YaB isn’t really that exciting, aside from a few nice dramas/movies, but there is no denying that she is trying to break off nicely from that child/teen actress phase. She has now gotten to a position where she hopefully can do better roles more freely. But I feel you though, I really wish she would try to pick up well written dramas/movies and be more diverse with her characters.

So glad you mentioned LJS!! I didn't actually know him until this year but going through his works he did seem to improve lots. Found him through W, loved School 2013 and IHYV, Pinocchio was good, agreed W was meh, but really his first big impact was in Secret Garden and with his acting skills at the time the the 10min of screen time he got throughout the whole series was just about the right amount.

I'm hooked on NJH right now and going through the same process. He has improved and I'm waiting for the day the same thing can be said about him and his fellow generation of actors. PBG is taking the lead and I'm excited to see who will follow behind him for this crop of young and upcoming actors.

For me the coincidence is that i followed the "Hong Seol"

Chun Woo Hee: saw her in mother/sunny but i was not really impressed by her until Han Gong Ju, she was perfect and i love the way she speak, and she impressed me again in the wailing.

Oh Yeon Seo: Finally, she stopped doing those cheap drama, i feel like people don't take her seriously because of them. I love that she isn't afraid to work hard (take off 2), but she tends to overact, so hong seol will be something new for her.

Song He Gyo turn good since That winter the wind blows and Kim Tae Hee since Jang Ok Jung, for sure that I can't believe my eyes LOL

And eventually, Kim Woo Bin? I don't know if Kim WOo Bin will follow them, one good performances in a project is not a confirmation yet (he was just okay before)

Well, I haven't been watching dramas long enough that I can say I've followed an actor's development, but there are a few that caught my attention:

- Ji Chang Wook: I first saw him as the spoiled baby emperor in Empress Ki, and didn't really like him until... the end! Then I watched Healer, but fell more in love with Park Bong Su. Then went back to watch Warrior Baek Dong Su, but ended up liking Yoo Seung Ho more in that one... I avoided The K2. Oh, I look forward to his appearance in Seven First Kisses, LOL.

- Park Bo Gum: I also first spotted him in Gaksital, where he left a deep impression. Then I completely forgot about him until I started Moonlight - the show bored me (sorry MDBC fans) but as the Crown Prince he was awesome. Being a Joo Won fan I sat down to watch Tomorrow's Cantabile, and almost jumped up when Bo Gum appeared around episode 7. His obvious musical talent blew me away, and his cheeky character and underlying melancholy made me really root for him. I have yet to watch Reply 1988.

- Yoo In Na: First saw her in Secret Garden, playing Ha Ji Won't best friend. She showed great comedic potential there (that 'foam kiss' lol). In Queen Hyun's Man I thought she was sometimes over the top, but she sobbed her heart out and I felt for her. In MLFAS she was not really memorable, but in Goblin she's got an air of mystery.

I've been watching Kwak Dongyeon since Unexpected You and I knew he'd make it big since he's always been good. It's nice to see him getting more recognized.

A lot of idol turned actors would fit that though. The thing is, some people has that one role that fits them perfectly but then they try something else and gets hate for not doing well. Everyone gets their timing so I always try even when I get disappointed.

There's been a few, but the main ones would be Jo Jung-suk and Seo In-guk.

Jo Jung-suk, especially. I've loved him ever since I first saw him in What's Up, and watching how much he's flourished since his debut has been so satisfying. I never would have thought that 4 years later he'd already be starring opposite Gong Hyo-jin, but here we are!

I think it's especially novel because he's part of the What's Up crowd, that included so many talented actors that should have hit it big by now: Im Joo-hwan, Im Joo-eun. I think Kim Ji-won is the only who's really hit it big, and even she is taking her time finding that leading role she needs.

I can't wait the day Kim Ji-won gets a leading role. I love her in What's Up. She's capable of being lead materials. I do think Kim Eun Sook adore her for being casted twice for her drama. So maybe the third time is the charm of being the lead? *dreaming*

I do want her leading men to be either Kang Hangul or Kim Woo Bin. She + those two were the ONLY reason why I kept watching HEIRS.

Gosh, so many! And now this question makes me feel really ancient! I call actors like this "screen jumpers" to myself because they seem to jump off the screen from the scene around them, they do so much with so little, and make me ask "who is THAT?" and remember them. One was Kim Nam Gil, who I first saw in a tiny little part in Kim Sam Soon, followed by small parts in dramas I don't recall then Bidam! and then super-stardom. (I'm sure he did a lot of other work I missed in between LOL). Then there are actors like that who seem to go missing, or never get as far as you think they will/should such as Im Ju Hwan - he was noticeable as a bit player in an old movie "Millionaire's First Love" and it's been fun to watch his career grow over all these years but still it seems like he should be bigger.
LJS, JJS were kids to watch too but not as fun because they got big pretty fast.

I love all these kinds of question in Open threads, making me reviewing the dramas I have watched to give an answer.

An actor or actress that you’ve been following or knew since their debut/early works and have proudly watched them grow?
==> This must be Seo In Guk to me.

I did not know the music show he won, but I first saw him him Qualification of men, he was tall, red hair, wide shoulder, a bit chubby with good voice.

And then boom, he was in Reply 1997. My goodness, how could he become much younger to star as Yoon Yoon Jae in a high school drama? And how could he naturally act like he was born as a male lead actor? He has the best pupply-love-between-bffs with Eun ji in my drama list.

Then he stars in No Breathing. I swear his body was good in Reply 1997, but since when it became that much hot to drool over??? I could hardly breath seeing him running around with only swimming pant (I was in theater with my bf but fangirling over SIG hahaha)! Eye candy and goofy Seo In Guk in that movie really win my heart, I was so happy he got a lead role in a youth movie. =))))

Suddenly, he became the cold and genius Dave in I remember you. He was no longer goofy but dangerous, I was not even sure if he's evil. His acting spots on, in such a different way that draws me in this thriller drama. I no longer think SIG is acting as Dave, I only remember Dave and the drama, it's that much real to me. To me, this drama marks SIG's improvement in acting dark characters.

Recently he comes back with Yang Jung Do, I don't think I need to say anything else, a great actor playing one of the best (con) artists (to be fair, artist = director/screenwriter/casting/actor of his own "play") of dramaland to lure every heart his way.

To sum up, Mi Joo will be the best fangirl I can ever hope to be (calm, collected, all eyes on him) if I ever see Seo In Guk in person.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgORryICUkA at 4:37

If it's too long for you to see his acting in a drama, you can try his music MVs, like this.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEQ2JIuvCYQ

I am and will always be proud of every achievement he ever gets in his career... :D

but I do know Boa and TVXQ before, I just don't actually know their Korean song

and then cheese in the trap.. made me take notice of the whole korean drama OST concept..
and the reply 88 happened.. and it opened up the 80s world of music..

Started payign attention to songs played in variety prgorams..

HOWEVER, haven't found even a single pop song (outside of drama aka idol/ band album songs) that I have genuinely enjoyed, worth listening to again, besides a few of the drama osts

It was from using google to research the leads of BoF, cringe... Found SS501, laughed out of embarrassment for them, but was strangely hooked. Couldn't stop listening to K-pop, and now, four years later, I still don't like US music as much. Now I enjoy lots of K-pop groups: EXO, Shinee, BTS (Jimin's "Lie" is beautiful), Monsta X, VIXX, 2PM, ummm, what else? I like Dean and Tablo, Zico on his own as well as in Block B, Taemin (Sayonara Hitori is another current favorite), jeez. So many! Anyway, that's a tiny list of my favorites, all of which began with SS501.

The first song that got me into Korean ost is Suddenly from City Hunter.
For Kpop it's Bae Bae from Big Bang. Later BTS happened! I enjoyed all their high energy upbeat hip hop songs then I read the lyrics... And fell deeply in love. Their songs tell their personal stories, tackle issues like mental health, social phobia, stereotyping, youngsters trying to make sense of adult world, naysayers, love for your career, female empowerment, dreams hopes, breaking the wall, pushing the boundaries and so much more... M still discovering their songs.
Currently listening to Suga's mixtape. I feel like I got to know him personally. It's pure art! And this coming from person( me ) who doesn't like rapping.

Hey guys! Considering the fact that finals are next week, I have been spending too much time watching dramas and not enough time sleeping... oh well.

The Lonely Shining Goblin (2/16): It would be a crime to start with any other drama. This show is gold. Well, the first two episodes are gold. I can't wait to watch episode 3 tonight! I'm ridiculously excited. I was not looking forward to this drama. Kim Eun-sook is not a writer I normally like and the promo materials didn't interest me. But right when I began episode 1 I was sucked in. The cinematography, the acting, the whimsical tone, the odd and lovable characters. Everything is hitting the right beats for me and I hope it continues to be great.

Nigeru wa Haji da ga Yaku ni Tatsu (8/10): I laughed so hard when he went to her family home and she went back to Tokyo, and her dad hugged him on Hug Day. Such a bright spot to my week.

Date - Koi to wa Donna Mono Kashira (9/10): Hmmm, this one's probably got be a solid 7 from me. Enjoyable but nothing special.

Master's Sun (11/17): Enjoying this a LOT more now. Gong Hyo-jin is lovely and I'm really warming up to So Ji-sub.

I'm still watching Legend of the Blue Sea but I haven't watched this week's episodes yet. I hear they're good, though!

Now I'm just gonna watch DramaFever like a vulture tonight until they post the new Goblin episode.

It's also gotta be in HD, so I can really take in all the gloriousness that is Goblin. Ha. It's def tough, but we've got this!

I never watch dramas raw because like you said I want to be able to fully enjoy it and understand it when I first watch an episode, but I'm currently downloading the raw of Goblin episode 3 because I make GIFs on tumblr and it's gonna take some serious willpower to not open that file until I watch it with subs, hahaha.

0

Oh, Van, I saw you referring to the Grim Reaper as "Grims" in the Goblin recaps and thought it was a cute nickname so I've started using it as well. :P

0

Spoiler from episode 3: Subway made an appearance...

0

NOOOO not Subway!! I thought we were safe because of the Olive Chicken PPL (which was well-done). I should know better by now... We're never safe from Subway.

But tbh after that atrocious Subway PPL in The K2, everything else seems subtle in comparison.

0

totally get what you mean Van, waiting patiently for subs and HD as well to enjoy watching it in full glory XP

0

Same here about live-watching a show! I'm currently watching four as they air, which is making me crazy. Mon-Tues is Man Living in Our House; Wed-Thurs is Legend of the Blue Sea and Weightlifting Fairy (if only the subs were compete faster! First world problems, I know); and now Fri-Sat has Goblin. I'm behind this week, so hopefully I can catch up with everything this weekend!

I kinda wish I had a drama to tune into for every day of the week... it'd keep me distracted from waiting all week for Goblin. I mean, I'm also watching Legend, but the Goblin love and withdrawal is strong.

0

I am watching those same shows rentenmann. But Goblin is the one that has me wishing my week away. Just one more (awesome) reason to love the weekend! ?

Omo omo! SPOILERS! Aha, it's not really, but still... now I'm excited and can't wait to find out what on earth happened in ep 3!? Also, I thought it was a pretty plausible theory that Grims is the reincarnation of the king? Ooh...

Also, MINDY! I hate that I can't directly reply to you, so hopefully you'll see this.

Omg, I wonder if I came across your gif posts??? I've reblogged and liked a few (a lot, actually) and they're all so gorgeous and made me realize how BEAUTIFUL this drama is. The cinematography is just breathtakingly stunning.
Aha, I'm glad you like the nickname "Grims," and even started using it. :) I was secretly hoping it'd catch on so I'm glad I've got one person! Haha.
I found out earlier on that Subway was sponsoring, so I knew it was bound to happen and that damn sub was gonna show up eventually. I haven't watched ep 3 yet, but I'm imagining the subway ppl's gonna consist of Grims stopping by to have a foot-long while waiting for the next scheduled soul to appear so he can take them away. Hey, at least it'll make sense! I can work with that. Haha.

Episode 3 of goblin is out. The rating climbs astronomically. It's almost 5% higher compare to last week episode. It's currently 12.471%, just a few decimal points behind Signal highest rated episode.

I'm happy for the casts and crews of Goblin, but my source of wariness is whether the rise in rating correlates well with its quality or not.

Maybe I should stop worrying and off to watch. Looking forward to fellow beanies' comments in the upcoming Goblin recap thread.

OMG, REALLY!!? Yeeeeeeeesssss! I'm so happy and proud for the show that it's garnering such high ratings bc so far, I think it really deserves it. Btw, I've been meaning to ask, how does a cable network like tvN garner unusually high ratings? Does it just simply mean more ppl are subscribing/paying for that channel to be able to watch the shows? Are there other reasons why cable network ratings shoot up other than more people tuning in? Now that I've asked that question... it sounds silly and I feel like I've just answered my own question, but I'll still throw it out there.
Im happy for the cast and crew, too and hope that the show will continue to deliver so that the high ratings correlate with the (high) quality.

@Van,

I think those are valid questions. At times, I also pose similar questions to myself. Other than the ones you had mentioned, I also wonder does AGB Nielson rating works like CPI in a way that it includes internet buzz in its measurement?

I think it's still possible for a tvn show to get 18% + rating as proven by answer me 1988.

Just that if a show got 20% + rating, that's when I start to scratch my head. I wonder where all those viewers go when shows like Signal, OHYA and MND to name a few air? It also makes me sad to see shows garner ratings around 1% when there is a cable show able to pass the 20% + rating.

When it comes to cable shows, sometimes I just get myself pass through that low rating and just enjoy the ride.

For sure! In short, it's fast paced, tightly written and packs an emotional punch. In long, I really like the time-travelling premise/how they executed it, as well as the detail oriented nature of the drama. I myself am a fan of the main actor, so that was a plus, and the heroine isn't one to roll over at the drop of a hat or get dragged around (not at all!) She's a favorite of mine. I also think the directing and style of the show was great.

It's by the same writer of W: Two Worlds and Queen In-hyun's man, if that adds anything. While W: Two Worlds is a superhero story and Queen In-hyun's man is an epic romance, Nine: Nine Time Travels is slick thriller and angsty romance. Super good.

Hi everyone, I hope you have a fun weekend
I am in a drama slump lately so I just want to share this story.
We often heard about couple separating and noble idiocy but have you ever see that in real life?
The obligatory, not me but my friend have this story about a guy she likes.
She was in mid-20 and she met this guy who is 40 at the time, so they have like 15 years gap and out of the +7 rules.
She was having a hard time in his life and he helps her a lot, they started sharing many activities, sharing their hobby and talking almost every day.
Then she knew she has feeling for this guy as a man and he shows the same attitude,
One night, the guy admit to her about his feeling and how he thought he is not supposed to have this thought of her. She is old enough to be his daughter and this realisation doesn't sit well with him at all,
He felt guilty with the feeling he has for her and wants to end their relation as a friend, he said to her that she is okay now, she is better and can go on her life by herself without him.
She is really shocked and taken aback, she doesn't think it's right because they do have the feelings but their age gap just screams more trouble to her.
She described it as someone she would love forever but can't marry cause she doesn't have faith in it.
After saying that he would leave her, the girl still tries to find him and capture his attention as a woman, not a friend,
The man then straight up saying that he felt guilty if he chooses her cause it means he will take one of the most beautiful moments in her 20-sh.
He believes she would find another person who will act the same as him and more suitable. There is gonna be another considerate guy with smaller age gap for her.
He emphasised again that he felt guilty every time the thought of them happen, he then told her that he gonna leaves in 2 weeks,
He wants to end the relationship well and never get contact again.
She is devastated when he left, ever after agreeing that they will cut contact, crying many days after that,

I meet her a week ago, casually said to me this story ( 4-year-old story) and how she is grateful for how he handles his desire and her at the time.
The interesting things is that she hopes that she will never meet him again, she has a boyfriend now, 4 years older than her but if she happens to meet him again,
she afraid that the feeling would come back, she never forgets him but she also can't bring herself to become his guilt if they were together.

I did ask the same thing to her,
she answer that he express that he felt overly guilty and imo the guy probably will go with it if they met as 35 and 50 years old and not at 25 and 40,

For move on, Idk if move on is the right word for her cause when she talks about him, it's all about him and I can see she missed him, she still saved their text and it was him that lets her go.
It really like a drama separation story when they let others go because it hurts, the difference is this guy actually explain and give her a time,

The more I think about it, I get this impression that he is a nice guy and he probably doesn't love her as much as she thought or really really into her.

Does she still hope to meet this person?
Do I know this guy?
Am I supposed to delivered a message?

It's a bit funny to realise that some scenario could happen and somehow you unknowingly hope for the drama magic to comes true.

He is someone that got away to her. The unfinished business that leave her with everlasting pent up lingering feelings. I can relate to her if she wish to not ever meet him again, because the attraction and feelings still there, and it's still raw, and it could be fatal plus lethal.

I wish your friend is happy and find a peace in her heart and life now. Perhaps in another life, she would be his girl...

Hello Beanies! Long time no OT for me.

Took a rest after finishing Moonlight for like a month or so. Then we had an unexpected three-day break from school (well, it was more like two days but I skipped the other one because it was in the middle), anyways. I ended up watching Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim (10 episodes), Legend of the Blue Sea (8 episodes), Oh Geum Bi (7 episodes), and Goblin (2 episodes)

There goes my plan of staying away from kdramas for awhile to focus on school. Oh well. How can I resist all these dramas?

I'm a sucker when it comes to a father and daughter relationship so I like it. And the child actress is just damn good at what she does! I'm warming up on OJH since I cannot remember any drama that he was in.

hi neener,
i am liking Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim more and more. by the end of ep 10 (*spoiler*) my inclinations that Dr. Kim might be a sinister character after all seem more possible than ever. I thought it was hilarious that the crazes webtoon artist who was uncontrollable because he hand't had an idea in so long whipped out his drawing pad when the ER room went haywire.

anyhoot, Legend of the Blue Sea has it's hilarious moments, too, no?

And Dr. Kim, whatever his plans are I hope it's good. I'm a little curious about Yeon Hwa though. I mean she was fast in intubating(?) that patient!

As for LotBS, this week's episode esp 7 was just pure hilarious thanks to JJS ?

Hey guys! I've just watched the first 2 episodes of the Lotte "drama" aka super-comercial, and Lee Joon-ki just hit me hard with the "So from the future" vibes.

Now I'm depressed all over again about that drama.

I checked out Lee Jun-ki's ep and thought it was entertaining, yet totally nonsensical. Like, I'd tune in for fun but it's so random and I can't really take it seriously... which is probably the intention, since it's like a series of long CFs for Lotte. Because dang it, I'm interested in 6/7 of the guys in it (Park Hae-jin's up next as the cold boss and he's giving me Yoo-jung Sunbae vibes bc of the mysterious hint in the previews...), I'll probably continue to check it out but it's so weird! I actually thought Lee Jun-ki's character was kinda creepy af when he just took her to his home(?) and SHE FOLLOWED HIM??? Then he proceeded to show her a slideshow of pics of herself from childhood and years after that??? What!? I know he was "the church oppa that's been there since childhood," but she doesn't remember him at all, so now he's just a creepy a dude (yes, he's good looking, but omg not the point) who's been watching her since she was a little girl and now she's just gonna kiss him? Huh? I kept saying how this could easily turn into a horror/crime show any min now.... and I was actually surprised at the lack of brand exposure throughout the ep... just wished they took out the weird storyline... I'm not mad, btw, just my thoughts while watching this ep. I think it's quite silly, but I get that most ppl aren't gonna watch it expecting a storyline that makes sense. I wonder how the others are gonna play out. I'm not expecting much (other than pure eye candy), that's for sure.

Required fields are marked *

hahahaha totally agree with you! I guess the "plot" is that there a lot of good looking guys will randomly have their life changed to fill in her own story.

But since LJK was just a dream, and the girl is aware he is an actor, I guess one of the guys will be real.

I don't know. I just came for the eye candy.

0

Required fields are marked *

I know I'm just there for the eye candy. I can't believe they're all in it together! And I don't think anybody will take it too seriously, with all the references to the idols themselves. Plotwise, I do like "groundhogs day kisses" idea. If that's what's going on.

re: creeper Lee Joon Gi. I always find it a little disconcerting when Kdrama guys have not only been in love with the leading lady for forever (that's ok) but have also been snapping photos and semi-stalking them. Don't date them! Even if they have roses!

I'm curious, who's the 1/7?

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I'm curious too: who's the 1/7?

For me, it's Lee Jong Suk (don't hate me, don't hate me, he just looks wayyyy to much like my younger brother so I just can't find him attractive). Everybody else in this drama is like a dream come true - which I guess is the point. I'm thinking of this less as a drama with a narrative but more like a fashion show: just look at the parade of pretty pretty possibilities and don't pay attention to the story.

Also, rooting for Kai. I know, he can't act (yet) but dancer solidarity for the win!!! :)

Hi, Beanies!!

OMG, y'all. I finally saw the shower room fight scene from K2. Holy cow, those were some fit young men.

Also, my teenage son walked in while I was watching it.
("Mom, what the hell are you watching???")

So these days I'm watching three dramas & one US show -

Legend of the Blue Sea: I didn't think I'd care for it, but that actress is SO funny that it makes the whole thing worthwhile.

Goblin: Lee Dong Wook makes this series. He's hilarious & is the perfect foil for Gong Yoo's takes-himself-way-too-seriously 'Uncle'.

K2: I love that this show is 75% fighty-fights and car chases. It's starting to get a little makjang, but the action (especially nekkid shower fighting, woooo).

Falling Water: Seriously, people, if you're not watching this, you should be. It's about dreams and the nature of reality (also, one of the leads is a Korean actor, Will Yun Lee). It's run by Gale Ann Hurd, of Walking Dead fame, so you know it's good.

what I like about the Reaper character (it is early to say but I am hopeful) is that you dont often see weird and ambiguous characters, the lines are usually drawn out very early. he is so eccentric and so... he has some traits of Tae Ik from Full House 2, and some of an android with programmed emotions, and then he is so petty and by-the-book it is like he is terrified to loosen up and live a little. total weirdo, and I hope he stays like that. also, Yoo Inna is another weirdo and they are a perfect match. I love weirdos.

Happy Friday beanies!

I am loving Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-jo. Joon-hyung and Bok-jo are just so adorable, you cannot not like them. I re-watch the episodes a lot, this show leaves me in such a good mood, I'm happy all day!

I'm still watching the starnger living in our house but I'm not feeling it anymore. The first five episodes were great but then I don't know it just got boring. I still don't understand why Nan-gil confessed if he was going to keep his distance, why did Na-ri have to go through all of that angst? I mean, he was keeping it all to himself for all of those years and he was doing it just fine, he could've held in a little longer to take care of the land issues first and then confess!

I absolutely loved the first two episodes of Goblin. I usually try not to watch Gong-yoo dramas because he looks so much like my nephew that it feels weird to fall for him but I couldn't resist because Lee Dong-wook's my first ever korean crush and I watch everything he's in, so yeah watched it and now I can't wait for the rest, Gong-yoo is awesome and beautiful, I'm just hoping my nephew grows beard or something LOL!

I just finished re-watching reply 1997 and next on the re-watch list is reply 1994 but I'm hesitating a little. Last time I did I was depressed and heartbroken for weeks. Chilbong still gets me, I've never cried as much as I cried for him, I refused to leave the house, I was stuck re-watching him and ugly crying, I was so so sad, my heart never broke as hard as it did for him, he is my worst case of SLS!!

So here's a question, what was your worst case of SLS beanies? Just curious!

Not that I was really invested in his love story having a happy ending (though I profoundly admire Kang Haneul's work as an actor and I want him to have everything he wants in life) but there was just SO MUCH MORE to be milked out of that potential conflict. Alliances, political manoeuvring, so many opportunities for him to do something smart that would kick the plot up a notch... It made me cry angry tears. Still does.

Other than Goblin, I've been watching Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Ju. These are the two shows I watch as soon as the subs are up! Legends of the Blue Sea I watch when I have time - haven't felt any urgency here haha.

Side note... I recently moved to Germany for work (from the USA)... and I must say, having to wait another 5-6 hours for the episodes to come out is not fun. I'm used to coming form home from work and being able to watch the new eps. Not anymore!

There is a lot of favourite kdrama this year,
When I try to think about it, the drama I love this year feels like 1% of Drinking Solo after Police Unit 38 Signal(led) their entrance to the (W)-Two World.
Thrilling, slice of life, real and imaginative.
Sometimes it's like the Age of Youth when you can giggling after heard Ms Temper and Nam Jung Gi talked about "Baek Hee Has returned with Marriage Contract" in the elevator but still can fully be immersed in the beautiful view of Moonlight Drawn by Clouds*.
It's beautiful, uplifting, full of hope for a better life.

It also likes a hope when I saw the poster of geumbi with all her children imagination of flower knight, mermaid and goblin entangle themselves within her Memory.
It seems to be full of ongoing opportunity,

There is nothing that gets you out of bed for work in the morning like the DB OT, I swear. Life suddenly ramped up to 1000, and I have finals and projects and a map of Asia to memorize, but I'm trying not to stress to much about it. If it won't be useful to stress, don't do it. ^^ I am so ready for the holidays, too. People have been nice in the stores, for the most part, and I just want to give each one of them a big smile and maybe some raspberry chocolate. Be kind to cashiers! They work hard!

Shopping King Louis: I'll be honest, this one lost my interest in the last few episodes. They were still suuuuuper cute together (one of the cutest couples I've seen this year), but the funny was gone and the plot was gone and the tone didn't really allow for huge emotional character punches. I'm not really certain they should have gone with the murder/kidnapping as his backstory for amnesia. It felt a little out of place with the tone and I was never invested in the bad guy or anything. But it was cute, it's over, and I'm on to something new!

Legend of the Blue Sea: I really liked this week's episodes. Especially how the "dreams of the future" has a "visions of the past" counterpart. I hope that plot point gets a bit more development, I'd love to see where it led. I'm still not as invested in the comedy or couple like I was with MLFAS, but they're cute.

When a Snail Falls in Love: I'm in denial. It's not ending next week. It's not! I need a kiss, a hand-hold, something! The rooftop scene was adorable, the Golden Python guy is terrifying, and I just wish there were more episodes. Maybe it secretly continues? Or season 2, anyone?

Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim: This how totally hit the sweet spot this week. I think my favorite part is how unwilling Dr. Kim is to participate in the hospital politics. Or at least how sly he is about it. He's absolutely unwilling to play their game, he'd rather just do his job. And then they let the politics fade to let Friday Night shine. And while it was a liiiiittle super convenient to have the artist there, the drawing he made was still super awesome. Any way we could get a manhwa? ...And then they get sucked into it? ;)

The Man Living in Our House: Dad's lame, They're super cute together, stop kneading dough to go eat dumplings already!

Goblin: My Korean teacher loves this one. I love this one. I got my brother to start watching it with me, and he likes it (he's only ever seen bits of Misaeng and Pinocchio). We're watching it together now. I'm kind of really hoping for some co-habitation hijinks now, because she's homeless now. Right? Was that in the premise?

Seven First Kisses: Ohohohoho. I think my dreams have come true. I'm still in awe that Lotte got this together. Lee Joon Gi was a great first man. Park Hae-Jin looks fun too. Can't wait for LJS! And have you seen the mv they made? I'll post a link.

Happy Friday! Can't believe it has only a few more weeks left for this year. Time flies when you have fun (At least I had with all good dramas this year).

Good data corporation analyzed knetz responses from on-line news, blogs, communities, SNS, clicks on video clips for 32 dramas to be aired or airing to determine the most issuable TV drama. According to their report on 5th, Goblin was the winner. After Goblin, No.2 went to Legend of Blue Sea, 3. Romantic doctor, 4. Weighting Fairy KBJ, 5. TWMWWHAA, 6. Night light, 7. Walgyesu tailor shop, 8. HwaRang, and 9. Man living in my house. Goblin also took 1st place with the score 7,449 which was the highest among all previous dramas on their first week of airing, which included DoTS(5,518), Reply 88 (5,260), Moonlight (4,720), and Legend of blue sea(4,315).

Personally I love everything about Goblin so far except... Kim Go-eun. I love her and she was perfect in CITT, but here her expression reminds me of Suzy in UF and Park So-dam in Cinderella, which is not funny at all. I wish the role went to someone like Kim Ji-won (of DoTS). Oh well, hopefully I can warm up to her after a few more episodes.

and just because-
Park Hyung-sik(Hwarang) and Nam Ji-hyun(SKL)'s duet in 2014 KBS awards ceremony. I had to replay around 2:07 :)

I think it wasn't KGE that you don't like in Goblin but her character itself. As for me, I think Go Eun perfectly fit the role. Honestly, I can't think of any other actress who can portray a bubbly highschool girl (which I think is only a mask she puts on since the time we only saw her act so cutesy was in front of Goblin. This girl has a seriously pitiable hard life) and not feel too young for GY. I can't imagine Kim Ji Won as a highschool girl either (though she totally can act cute with that angel thingy haha)

I really enjoyed 'This week My wife will have an affair' and loved the Young-Young(Ahn Joon-young and Kwon Bo-young) couple. Lee Sang-yeop who played PD Ahn Joon-young had an interview.[OSEN, Star News]
He worked on 5 dramas this year including Signal, God of noodles, Doctors, Drama special My happy home and TWMWWHAA. In these dramas, he played variety of characters ranging from a serial killer to a PD. He especially made a strong impression when he played a serial killer in Signal. His character was a part-timer in a convenient store obsessed with the neat arrangement of the shelves in addition to being a serial killer. "Still when I search my name on the net, I see some picture of nicely arranged shelves of a convenient store which has comments like "I thought Lee Sang-yeop stopped by." I feel bad because they must be showing the cool display of the shelves with their occupational pride."

He picked PD Ahn in TWMWWHAA as a character who is the closest to himself in real life. "I am similar to Ahn Joon-young. I really had hard time after I finished Signal and God of Noodles. I killed a person in Signal, and I was killed in God of Noodles. I did GON only one month after I did Signal, so impact was high. This time I couldn't wait to go to the set with the expectation how I could make people laugh. The show gave me healing."
He was noticed by his 'pathetic behavior' in the show. "I was thankful that I didn't hear I looked awkward or not fitting. There were times I acted even more pathetic than PD-nim and writer-nim planned. But at some point real Lee Sang-yeop came out out of blue. With ad-lib, I even spoke in my usual way of talking- like "Hyung-ah" to Lee Sun-kyun(Hyun-woo) and Kim Hee-won(Yoon-gi) on the set." (how cute)

Didn't he have fear (his image) being ruined? "From some point, I found myself enjoying it. Because writer-nim and PD-nim made the character fitting to Lee Sang-yeop, I didn't feel uncomfortable about ruining my image."
The scenes he sobbed more than Hyun-woo at HW's situation, and cried whenever a topic on affair came up in the company meeting made people laugh. "I was very worried about the sobbing scene. I was worried if I looked over-acting. But it didn't look too bad on the screen, so I might had started to act without care from that point on."

Another thing which helped the acting was that many cameras were used in this show unlike most of dramas which use one or two cameras. "Usually with a drama one or two cameras are used, and you have to do the shoot 3-4 times to raise the emotion, and on 4th time they do the tight shot. This time I had to finish in 1-2 times, so I was awkward at first and wondered if I did right. But after a while, that was more comfortable. We could just do as we prepared in the rehearsal without keep shooting, and ad-lib was more natural and acting was more raw, so I liked it better. Also finding where the camera was located was refreshing experience."

The show dealt with the marriage, divorce and date. "I have never had a chance to think about my ideal type. What I have felt from this show is that I like someone I feel comfortable with. I think I learned from Joon-young and writer Kwon. There was a scene where I said "Is it uncomfortable to eat and drink with me? I feel most comfortable when I do that with you." while eating pickled radish. I felt connected. I thought being comfortable is the best and most important. I think he was real Ahn Joon-young when he was with writer Kwon. He didn't have to look cool when he was with her. Also I think he was moved about the fact that even though she sensed Joon-young was divorced she never said a word first."

This was Lee's second time working with PD Kim Suk-yoon and writer Lee Nam-kyu after JTBC drama 'I live in ChungDamDong' in 2011.
"This is the second time I work with this team. I was hoping they would contact me, and they called me directly so I felt honored. Also writer-nim said he wrote the script thinking about me from the beginning. At first I wondered "What did he see from me writing this way?" but I could understand the more I was acting. I think it will be great if I can work with them again. It took 5 years working with them again, and I can wait that long again for the next time."
He did many projects this year. "I think I did best working without taking a break this year. I really love working. The set is where I get Endorphin and I am most happy and feel healing when I am on the set. I hope I can keep working doing various projects next year too."

Sorry this one goes before 22.1

He also had many funny scenes with Lee Sun-kyun. The scene where their chemistry shined was Hotel scene when Hyun-woo went to Hotel with Jun-young to confirm his wife's affair. While doing that, they tried to get a room, which caused misunderstanding for people around them. "I was sweating because I kept holding his hands. They filmed many versions for the ending - whining, sulking, etc but PD-nim used the clean cut, so I felt relieved. That time the looks from people were so funny, and people who worked with us were so good. There were times Sun-kyun Hyung's expression was caught on the screen and I was moved thinking "He makes the scene come alive like this." I often watch video clip of the show, and when I see a scene where I appear with Sun-kyun hyung, I just see hyung and notice how the scene was saved. When I see just myself without hyung in the picture, I see an awful acting, so I wonder all were Sun-kyun hyung's made."

Lee said his heart fluttered when he first met Lee Sun-kyun. "I joined Lee Sun-kyun Gyo(Gyo=faith, like hero worship). I reported "I am doing an interview today." to him. I used to imitate him in 'Pasta'. I was so anxious when PD-nim arranged a meeting with Boa ssi and Sun-kyun hyung. I was stuck on the traffic on a way to meet him, and I felt like I was going to meet my love. He was easy-going and felt like my real brother. I think I became to like him as a person. It might have been his consideration too. I didn't know at first, but when I watched the scene where we acted together later, I realized he matched me in acting. Usually I behave flippantly, but he always smiled at me and told me good stories while we ate or drank together. We also shared complaints which was really great."

His partner Boa who played the writer Kwon is a singer who didn't have much acting experience, so question was if there was any burden about team-work or leading her acting. "I felt that I could do 'give and take' with this person acting-wise. I did acting so comfortably with writer Kwon, and I even relied on her. There were times I even got impressed by her professionalism. I thought "Wow she really prepared hard.", and she boosted the set atmosphere because she had full of energy. I was dying to endure the laughing, but she did it without sweat. Also she didn't make any NGs. Since she grabbed hold of center for her character, I felt like she showed what I could do clearly. I thought "Since she is doing this, I can do this." The acting pattern of Jun-young could make his partner feel at loss, but she didn't have any of that, and took it and gave it back well. I thought she was really good artist and good actress."

Awww, Fan, a thousand thanks for translating this interview for us. I saw the article in Korean and tried to google translate it but you know how that goes. I still can't get over this drama so this is a treat.

I had not seen Lee Sang Yeob until My Wife and from the beginning his character took me in right away, especially the scenes had with Lee Seon-kyun. It's so cute to see his hero-worship here (complete with flutters and all) and what he said in his interview about LSK matching his acting only confirms what some have said about LSK making his partners look good. Did you see the BTS video clip of their dance practice? I heard that "hyung-ah" in person.

I am so happy that this role suits him to such a T. He certainly has gained many new fans judging from the comments people make on this drama.

it is an interesting question, how playing a serial killer or a murder victim affects the actor, does it give emotional shock? they are placing themselves in the skin of a killer or someone killed, it must feel right in their heart and shake them

Hi everyone.
Right now I am watching Goblin and Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo.

I can't believe we have to wait 6 more days for new episode of Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo with subtitles!

I hope my favourite idol goes into acting and act in a drama as cute as Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo. He just debut this year so I may have to wait a while and I do not know will he go into acting.

Happy Friday, everyone!!

I am down to only a few dramas now, bated awaiting next year's shows. Currently I am watching
When A Snail Falls in Love and even though I love the show, I find myself strangely reluctant to watch it now that we are approaching the home stretch. I'm stuck on episode 17, and cringing at the English. Why exactly would Burmese villagers know how to speak/understand English??

Thank you to all who mentioned Love O2O. I watched it and enjoyed it very much for the simple, uncomplicated love story it was. Also, Yang Yang!!

I'm still watching and enjoying Nigeru wa Haji da ga Yaku ni tatsu but I must admit I'm very frustrated with Hiramasa being passive and waiting for love to happen to him. Love takes courage, and if you can't even give a tiny bit of effort, well then, it will and *should* pass you by.

I also started Behind your smile and... I don't know what keeps me watching because I'm enamored to precisely no one in the show. The male lead strikes me as rather cruel, his mean-spirited fiancee is ehn, and the female lead....well, I don't find it cute when naive children of people who have devastating several others refuse to see that because "my mom is the best person in the world to me". I just want to smack them. So.. Yeah. I dunno why I'm watching.

What I am watching and LOVING is The Lonely Shining Goblin . Episode 2 fave me life!! I can't wait to see how it will all unfold.

In non-drama news, I have my very first medical school clinical exams on Monday. It's mostly going to be a an oral exam in different surgical disciplines and I am terrified. What if I examine a patient wrongly, or forget a crucial step in the examination? What if I give a wrong diagnosis? What if I take a history and ask only irrelevant questions? How will I face my examiners (who are also my teachers) afterwards?! Ugh! I've been having nightmares.

Your comment about Snail's use of English reminded me of the odd use of English in Love Me if You Dare, where the male lead character had spent most of his life in the US, was a professor at the University of Maryland (I think) and a consultant for the FBI. And he didn't speak English in the show. Somehow his FBI contact understood everything he said, and replied in English. It was rather weird. More weird then people in a country with a different official language speaking English.

When a Snail Fall's in love and Love me if you dare are actually based on books written by the same person... I doubt if that has anything to do with the use of English in the shows though. I enjoyed both, but I prefer Snail more!

It probably had to do with the particular actor's fluency or lack of in English. While a line or two is manageable in your non-native language, chunks of the script was probably difficult to pull off well. And also a choice to avoid subtitling the entire dialogue in those scenes for the Chinese audience.

It's a director's choice. I have seen it done in movies with international casts. You just have to accept the construct that they understand each other.

<Hiramasa being passive and waiting for love to happen to him

I'm not sure you've understood Hiramasa correctly. He's never waited for love to happen to him. He has, all his life, ruled out completely that love is possible for him. Like, the word "love" wasn't even in his dictionary of life – it was something that only happened to others.

That's all beside the point. The point that is that love takes courage, and while I've loved this show it is becoming painful to watch Mikuri be the proactive one over and again. Self-esteem notwithstanding, if he hasn't the courage to also make a move for her sake... Then quite frankly, he doesn't deserve her. The point was that just once, I'd like to see some initiative from him. Not everyday receive, sometimes, with heart in hand, make the first move and don't hide after making it. If even once. Fortune favors the brave.

Well, he doesn't think he deserves her anyhow. He has no such pretensions and I'm sure he would readily admit that he has zero courage.

He's doing amazing for someone who spent 35 years believing that his whole life was just going to be him.

He grabbed her hand when they came back from the weekend away (his initiative). He kissed her then (his initiative). He suggested to hug in the morning, so she wouldn't have to wait up late for him (his initiative). He gave her a birthday present (money, but he tried so hard! and that was all totally his initiative). He kissed her again, already much more passionately (joint initiative). He called her to apologise (his initiative) – before he could only express his feelings by texting. He's really progressing at lightning speed, given his starting point.

I think the show has done an excellent job in explaining and developing his character, and doing so in a manner that feels completely natural (rather than forced) for the character.

0

I should really say "he called her AND ran after her all to wherever-her-parents-town-is".

First, glad you liked Love O2O! And Yang Yang! ? Sorry I didnt reply your message- my real life has been busy!

Don't worry about the exams, you will be fine, just keep calm and remember to be safe, never make up stuff and when all fails, fall back to basics.
Exams in medical school are hard because it only gets harder- when you are faced with a real patient and a real decision next time, the stakes are much higher if you get it wrong. So relax, honestly the examiners are usually not out to fail you, and if you really do something wrong, it's better that you learn in an exam, than on a real patient when a real mistake has been made. It's best to make all the mistakes you can now anyway, it will help you learn and make you a better doctor next time. But regardless Good Luck, I'm sure you will be fine ?
Fighting!

Regarding the use of English in When a Snail Falls in Love is more likely due to Burma (before it became Myanmar) was a British Colony for around 124 years a is still somewhat spoke there. So it is not strange at all for people who don't speak the same language to use a third common language, i.e. English.

Current leader Aung San Suu Kyi speaks English with a wonderful British accent, and a few years back she gave one of the best quotes ever...

Somebody asked her about her health at some press conference or something (I only remember the quote exactly, not all the background)

“I’m feeling a little delicate. Any tough questions and I shall faint straightaway”.

@Lady Jaye

I feel the same way about Behind My Smile (except that the naive lead doesn't bother me). The finance is a cliche, so I fast forward her scenes. It bothers me that they haven't given us much of a reason to connect with the leading man. Sure, they want to keep his back story a secret, but having him look mad (a lot) with no reason is starting to wear thin. That said, I keep tuning in. If I can get more of a foothold on my feeling for the lead, I think I'll be more invested.

Also, Snail was excellent. *Sigh* I wish it weren't over!

V-Focus is fluffy fun, but I am not in love with the acting style/character style. Lots of funny faces and reactions that seem unlivable to me. I think the writer does a good job of building realistic characters and a fun plot. I just know that I'm not in love with it. ?

But below that bar you don't see anything else?

Thanks so much for replying, by the way. I know it's extra work on your part to have to check things T____T but it really helps a lot when someone describes what they're seeing, since there are so many different phone models out there :)

Anyone watching the web drama 'Sound of my heart' which has Lee Gwang-soo(Entourage) as the hero?
There was a press conference for 'Sound of my heart'. [OSEN, Sports Seoul] This web drama based on a popular webtoon reached 26M views and will air(or aired-9th) with its new TV drama version in KBS2. This has been broadcasted in Naver TV cast since November.

Show is about a cartoonist hopeful Jo Suk(Lee Gwang-soo) and his family's comical daily life. Kim Dae-myung (Miseang) said "When we did filming, we were having so much fun so I wondered what if we were the only ones having fun, but when I watched TV version it was actually really fun." Jung So-min(Playful kiss) said "Web drama is just a preview. It will show brand new world in TV version."

This will be aired in the same time slot as Entourage. Lee Gwang-soo said "Since both were pre-production, I didn't know about the airing schedule until I finished the shoots. I wish they didn't overlap but this happened. I wanted to do both projects very much and I have much affection for both projects. I did my best filming and worked happily."
One of cameos is Song Joong-gi. Lee said "When I asked Joong-gi ssi if he could appear as cameo, he said ok right away even before reading the script. I had never known we had that many female staffs while filming. There were even people I saw for the first time." PD Ha Byun-hoon said "As a PD, I thought people would remember the scene where Song Joong-gi appears because that was the first and the last scene, so I asked Gwang-soo ssi to ask for a person who could act well and well-known to people, but I was shocked and thankful when he secured Song Joong-gi ssi. Song really worked hard and came well prepared. He took pictures with all staffs, and I was thinking why in the world I didn't take a picture that time."

About the show, PD Ha said "We tried various comedy in TV version. There are variety of contents in episodes from disaster to noir." Drama will also feature something different from the web version. Ae-bong(Jung So-min)'s parents will be played by actual husband and wife Woo Hyun and Jo Ryon. They will also show Lee Gwang-soo's back muscle and Kim Mi-kyung's drum skill.

CP Kim Ho-sang said "I have never seen a team with such a good team-work. From Lee Gwang-soo to Kim Byung-ok, all feel like real family and they were talking about Season 2 among themselves. I think they became close doing many press conferences, and I have high hopes for their chemistry. PD Ha Byung-hoon is not well-known, but has good feedback with this new attempt."

About ratings promise, Lee Gwang-soo said "I discussed with other casts, and we decided we would participate in 'National singing contest' if ratings go over 10%. We think it will, so we decided to meet from next week to practice singing."

Hope we can hear about this in DB~~

Happy Friday Beanies!

My week has pretty much sucked so far, been down with some sort of virus as they're everywhere atm (if only real frost weather would come soon) and not in the best emotional/mental state because of it. I can't wait for the day I hopefully won't get so upset and unbalanced because of a simple thing like catching a cold or the flu, sigh.

Goblin: LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE. I cannot believe this is a KES drama. It's SO good!! It's got everything I love. The humor, which kind of reminds of Pirates of the Caribeean lol, is so spot on, the cinematography splendid, the acting is great, the bromance between the three guys is perfect and so far the plot is really interesting (fingers crossed).

The only thing is that 1) I really wish she couldn't see ghosts, I don't do well with those kind of storydevices; and 2) not really comfortable with all the "divinity" talk. As someone belonging to (is that the phrase?) a faith myself, I'm not really comfortable with taking fantasy stories and bringing in more religious aspects such as the scene in the church and talk about him being a divinity instead of just calling it "magical being" or something. I know a lot of people might feel I'm overly sensitive and at least the church scene was sort of respecting of the religion, but still... Anyone else who belong to a faith who either agrees or disagrees with me? I wish it didn't bother me honestly, because I really love this show...

Six Flying Dragons (ONLY at EP 15, so please no SPOILERS, NOT EVEN WHAT IS KNOWN HISTORY-WSIE): This is my kind of sageuk! Bring on the action and complex characters who aren't all living in a palace! I love the dialogues, fight choreography, OST, acting, plot, literally everything.

Didn't even recognize Byun Yo Han until I looked up the cast names. I adored him in Misaeng and this is just further proof of his great acting skills, he's fast becoming one of my faves. Yoon Kyun Sang is delightfully and lovably goofy, liked him in Pinocchio and he too is showing that he's a really capable actor as I hardly recognized him and don't see one flicker of his old character in this. Yoo Ah In is good, but I feel he's a bit the same as his char in Veteran? While he's in some ways the polar opposite, he's still got that childish, mischiveous, sometimes scary side.

The female characters are just amazing. Finally some strong, independent, unique and interesting women and not just the lead, but literally all of them. *standing ovation*
Gil Tae Mi has got to be the most lovable villain I have ever seen lol, don't know why, but even though he does some mean, bad things, you can't help but love his character.

First Seven Kisses: Only watched the first ep so far. It's cute, but that's about it so far, after all it's only 9 mins. Have to say though, if a guy showed up and said those things to me, even if he was that good-looking, I wouldn't go. That's just...

Task Force 38 so far. It's hard to find a show whose twists and turns really surprise me, but so much happens here that made me go "wait what?" and I just love that. Plus the combo of Ma Dong Seok and Seo In Guk is magic and the cast in general was so good and natural.

Thank you so much for the link! Will definitely have a look at it once I finish (as I like to stay in the show's reality when I watch something and not think too much about what's real and not) :) It's mostly the political maneuvers, not so much the history, that gets me though. I just don't think very politically I guess haha.

SFD is extraordinary and unlike many k-dramas it's strong all the way to the end. There was obviously a great deal of thought put into the writing, casting and filming and it has some of the most amazing individual episodes I've seen. I was also pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the first two episodes of Goblin - I love the cast and the oddball mix of dark, funny, weirdness.

I've always been in awe of the way people can remember and single out episodes as the best ones. I'm so incredibly bad at that lol, everything just melts together to a unit for me. SFD is my favorite sageuk, it's awesome and it did everything right from the beginning to the end, it's definitely worth the 50 hours. I love love love Ddang-sae, and Byun Yo han killed it and now I feel the need to go watch it again!

Thank you, it's nice to know that someone else feels that way too :) Yeah, I try to substitute "divine" with "magical" every time they say it hehe, it's not working completely though. I hope so too. It wouldn't be unprecedented for a drama to tone down something it stresses in the beginning. Also wondering if religious people in South Korea are going to voice an opinon and make them tone it down. The Korean viewers tend to let their opinion known quite a lot it seems and often they seem to be taken quite seriously by producers/networks.

This is actually only the second sageuk I've ever liked. Loved Gu Family Book, but it's not really a serious sageuk, and then managed to finish MDBC, but didn't like it. This is the only "proper" one I've managed to get into. Maybe I just need to stick with the ones with action instead of those where everyone's prancing around the palaces all the time :P

Perhaps it would help to think of the word "divine" meaning something a little different within the context of the show? A friend of mine voiced something similar last week and was thinking of dropping the show until someone suggested that she thinks of "divine" as meaning "like God", as in "having power that reminds us of God" as opposed to "pertaining to God". I'm not religious myself so it didn't bother me (and I'm also not quite sure I'm explaining it right, it was a good talk to have in a "you had to be there" kind of way) but that distinction really seemed to soothe her so maybe it'll do the same for you?

Yes, the 'divinity' talk in Goblin makes me uncomfortable too. I'm fine with magical beings operating according to rules of their own world, but the church scene was unnecessary. As a Christian, I would have to say that Goblin is really not a divinity and cannot claim 'neutrality' because there is only one true God... In short, I wish they'd keep fantasy and religion separate.

Hola,

Questions

There was discussion last week about aegyo and the possibility of a psychological study on a connection between aegyo and pedophilia.

What are your thought?

I personally don't see it. I mean, I love when guys act cute. I love when my girlfriends act cute. I love acting cute. Is it a cultural thing? I'm American. Cute is a fun and silly thing to do. And sometimes you can get people to agree 100% to something they would have done 75% otherwise.

Maybe it's the maknae in me speaking but acting cute is a part of interacting with people. Maybe I'm missing the jump from cute to aegyo. But I can say without a doubt that no matter how aegyo someone acts: pitch, gestures, bending, blinking and such, I don't confuse them for a child. And when a child does that, I'm not suddenly attracted to them. I may or may not give in to what they are asking for but there is no twisted agenda involved.

I think rather than aegyo being related to pedophilia, it's related to the oppa-dongsaeng relationship that rules the world. Women being cute, in any country not just Korea is the backbone of many dating, courting, and married couples.

Also, there is a discussion on Joon Jae making too many rules and restricting Chung's freedom. To which I answer, if she wants freedom move out of my house.

However on a serious note, I wanted to discuss it. Do you think his new "rules" are rude, funny, inbetween, or something else entirely?

I think they reflect his feelings for her developing. He's acting like the dad of a freshman girl. My 12 year old daughter could wear it. But not my 14/15 year old. He bought the outfit and was cool with her being out late as long as it wasn't dangerous. He isn't cool with other men seeing her looking so amazing. He wants less shown. I understand feminist annoyance her. I don't like the length but that's opinion. We don't need to get into a debate about what fashion is appropriate for young women or men. He doesn't want her spending much time with her Ramyun guy, especially at night, because he's jealous. The time was a little ridiculous. Like why not 9 or 10?

His rules aren't about her freedom. They are about someone potentially taking this beautiful Joon Jae's words, not mine lady away from him.

I think it's flattering and wouldn't mind being told the same. But that my personal opinion.

Otherwise, 2 days left of school. 3 final exams. 9 weeks off at least. And by then Winter Depression will be gone for the year.

I'll be back with my TV for the week.

I never heard of the possibility of aegyo being related to pedophilia.. And honestly when I think of aegyo and when I actively do it..is with babies. Like how you will mimic them and use a higher pitch voice, just trying to interact with them and perhaps make them smile. Then I thought about how when children are naturally being cute it is just overwhelmingly adorable..and usually a reason some will give in to them.. SO going with that maybe the reason ppl do aegyo to others is just from a desire to come off as adorable and make someone happy or smile..

As for Joon jae and his rules..I just found it funny and cute. He is still in denial of his feelings so he makes the weird rules to try and keep her close, yet if Chung had really stood up for herself and called him out on being ridiculous I honestly think he would have relented.. he probably would have understood he was being irrational. Chung however just will automatically do whatever he says, so..yeah that's not gna happen just yet.

I'm not sure all forms of aegyo could have a similarity to children but some do and it's really disturbing. If men are more attracted to a woman because she pretends to be this childlike creature what does it say about them?

>Women being cute, in any country not just Korea is the backbone of many dating, courting, and married couples.

Not in my country. Cute is ok, aegyo is not, at least here.

About JJ's rules, they are funny because she is a mermaid, she doesn't know he is being ridiculous. If she was just a real, regular guest and just did everything he said, that would be kind of creepy and another kind of story. :)

This week is all about **Empress Ki** for me. I've watched until Episode 36, but read all the recaps until Episode 51 to prepare myself for the numerous heartbreaks.

Though it's not perfect, so many of the episodes left me in tears or actual heartache. I thought Queen Seondeok and SFD were painful, but Empress Ki is whole another level of tears, with all the intense love-lines and betrayals.

Ha Ji Won is the woman- she's really perfect as Seung Nyang and beyond. Her action experience and her acting made that role so amazing.

Plus the 2 male leads Joo Jin Mo as noble, intelligent and idealistic Wang Yoo and Ji Chang Wook as the mentally tortured Puppy Emperor are perfect. I loved the chemistry between the 3 leads and enjoyed the complicated love triangle as well. Also, Seung Yang and TalTal's chemistry was no joke- I have three ships in this series haha.

The supporting characters, both good and evil were also amazing. I'll probably watch some happier series in between and get back to Empress Ki the next week. :)

I thought Wang So (Moon Lovers) had one of the most epic (initially) one sided loves, but Puppy emperor beat him straight.

Although I must say I loved the romance between Wang Yu and Nyang more, Ta-hwan's complete and 200% devotion to her from start to finish, despite his weak character and the sown mistrust was beautiful to watch. Despite his many failings, the only thing that drove him through life was his love for Nyang. *Sigh*

Happy Friday Beanies!

I've had an exhausting week in Real Life but it's great that I always can come here and have somewhere to Squee about dramas.

On the non drama side- I did my first overnight call/shift at work and did fine! *yay me!* Was in the ICU but thankfully nothing as severe as in RDTK. Haha.

Also my brother and I pulled of our mother's surprise birthday party and made her dinner and her favourite cake- she was so happy she cried! Haha. We made the famous Sydney Black Star Pastry Watermelon Cake and I must say it turned out well!

On the drama front-

I am LOVING Goblin! ❤️ If this week's episodes are good I think I've found my crack drama.

Also, I adored Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim this week. Full of Feels of the best kind. it really brings out the emotions I have felt while working as a doctor- all my insecurities and inner conflict, despite the fact that I do love what I do, and strive to do the best I can, while succumbing to the fact that I'm only human.

2 awesome dramas and a good week in Real Life is something to celebrate!

And thank you to all the wonderful Beanies who shared their tips for my upcoming trip to Korea!! *blows kisses!* ? Will update once I've compiled the list and share it with everyone!

Hope everyone will have a good weekend ahead! ❤️

Hello all:

I often find myself wondering how those drama-watching ahjummas in Korea can deal with all that drama stress and angst. Cause seriously, some of the sorrows, cruelties, etc that these characters bear...are too much for me to deal with at times. I get so worried about some characters and so annoyed with others that...aaargh.

I was watching First Love Again. A daily. And really, although I love the tension and excitement of watching a 100 episode unfold, I'm already too tense right now at episode 3. The evil chaebolless is too much.

But I'm managing to make it through Still Loving You. Because the evil Second-lead is a selfish bullying teenager. It'll be fun to deal with this one. No pinning a pregnancy on some unwitting guy stuff as in First Love Again. I just kinda wish I could find a recapper who is recapping dailies.

Night Light: Liking this a lot. Is it too idealistic of me to keep hoping that our bitter money-loving CEO-ess will see the error of her ways and win back her first and only true love? I don't want her to lose Geon U, although...well, she already has.

Weight-lifting Fairy: This is fun but such a hard watch for me. The whole idea of people forcing a person to eat because they want her to win...it's so oppressive and shows how the older folks are expected to have no respect for young people's wishes or bodies. I hate that "young 'in, live my unlived dreams for me and forget your own life" trope.

Goblin: OOh, serious fun! Silly and yet so serious in the Joseon flashbacks. Deadpan matter-of-fact weirdnesss bromance humor! I am so there!

Our Gab Soon: I keep trying to quit this show but it's so good I can't. I'll have to bear with the sorrow I guess.

Entourage: I found myself really seeing how destructive our newbie actor is. There is a kind of innocence that just destroys the lives of those around it. This actor (not the actor but the character played by the actor) has that quality. He kinda saunters through is life doing what he wants, which is valid enough. But he doesn't seem to realize he's a prince and the lives of his ministers are affected by his choices and insistences.

Legend: Not quite getting into it. That lost chaebol thing. Kind wish the entire thing had taken place in Joseon times but I guess we need the karmic loop element.

Not much else happening here. Except we got a new car. A new (used) car. One of those near spotless perfections that was coddled by its previous owner. And tomorrow, God Willing, I go to the orientation for the city library's ESL teaching program. Have a great weekend, all.

Yes, the "deadpan matter-of-fact weirdness bromance humor" is what I really love about Goblin (plus the random distribution of enchanted produce). The combination of good actors and a dark, funny world is a blast so far.

We're all open to discussion here right? So forgive me, I just want to air my thoughts on your thoughts regarding Weightlifting Kim Bok Joo. I don't think they are forcing her to eat to win. She has potential and they want to maximize it, if Bok Joo hadn't fallen in love with the Doctor and into the trap of her lies along the way and all the conflict that arises with it, I think she would have had considered raising her weight if her coach explains to her how it would be beneficial to her (less competition in upper weight level,as mentioned in the show) and more opportunities for her graduating sunbaes. I know it's not good for adults to ask the father first and the father deciding without consulting Bok Joo first, but in Asian culture, really, parents have so much influence on their kids life, even after entering adulthood. (Trust me I know, 24 and I still have to let my parents know why I'm coming home late on a Friday night, but that's common courtesy because I live with them, sorry I'm blabbering.) So There. All I can say is that, the show gets better. I promise. :D

Agreed with all you said and wanted to piggy back off your comment. I didnt see anything wrong with the coaches or her father forcing Bok Joo to eat except for it being unhealthy (but that's also because they're on a time crunch) mainly because she gave them her word and (granted the coaches should have been a bit more perceptive) they took Bok Joo at her word and were putting in their part of the effort to make sure BJ met her end goal. I saw it no different than say a person going to a trainer to lose weight and the weight trainer not letting the person quit even whenbit gets hard, just flipping the situation around.

Thank you @kx, it's a sacrifice athletes usually go through, and Bok Joo has to learn her lesson from all the debacle, equal faults on both adults and on Bok Joo. The adults on not considering her enough, and Bok Joo lying (which when she explained pretty much makes sense, we've all been there, or at least me, oh the things I've done for my first love, back then I would give off a kidney just so I could spend some time with my crush. First love is a giddy feeling, so sue me for being pathetic). What Bok Joo went through was part of growing up, and also a lesson for her coaches and father. What I'm glad is that, the show let's Bok Joo make up for her mistakes, coming clean to her friends, family and coaches. She's in pain, but she's got a great support system. Ohh, show, makes me feel nostalgic of my youth (not that I'm really old, but I feel old geez).

The bullying and ganging up on Bok Joo by parent and coach and hiting her offended me

Bokjoo's is wrong to lie but it's normal for teenagers in love to hide their heart from adults. Just my opinion. There was no openness to her side of things until much later. Adults surrounding a kid and haranguing her because they believe in her future is still cruel. It's an act of shaming ..and although most shaming is done "for the shamed person's good" it still is a cruel tool, whatever culture one belongs to.

Hi Carole,

It's been a while since I've been able to participate in the Open Thread. Glad to have the time to read comments and post here again. Night Light - watched episode 3 last night. One of the rare times where I want to know how a drama ends before continuing to watch. More than likely I'm going to wait for it to end before continuing it. Its a different season for me in terms of my kdrama watching habits right now. Legend of the Blue Sea - I love watching this each week.

My aversion to the same ole chaebol trope seems to me bothering me in this, although I'm not perturbed by it at all in Night Light. I guess because we're dealing with two women struggling for power, plus that philosophy of money, greed, etc.

Sorry for posting a different, completely new comment, but this is unrelated to kdrama itself, I'm just really curious. (Although I do mention two mv's ft actors who are really popular here on DB, so maybe non-K-music listeners will find it interesting too?)

Does anyone here like K-hiphop/rap?

I've been trying to find some good artists and songs lately as I love how melodious it is while having strong beats and often different from American hiphop/rap (although eg some of Zico's more hardcore stuff, which I also like, is more American and less melodious). But so far I've mostly managed to find ones by K-pop rappers such as Zico. Which I love, but I'd love to branch out too. Any suggestions?

Some of my favorites:

"The Cure" by Drunken Tiger
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQLndQKf8k4

"Bermuda Triangle" by Zico, Dean & Crush
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHoLaLlL5lA

"OMG" by Double K ft Dok2 and SEO IN GUK!!!! If you're a SIG fan this is a must!! He looks sooooo good and sounds great too <3
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaTfUmA3jX4

"Flower" by Yong Junhyung (from Beast)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyO2h1mjVCM

"Your Face" by Louie (from hiphop-duo Geeks) and Lee Hyun Woo! Yes, that Lee Huyn Woo. Go watch it now ^^
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdYgkq_HQSE

"You Are Me, I Am You" by Zico (one of my favorite songs)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewjucLierFc

Song Seunghyung (from FT Island) is one of my absolute favorite rappers. Sadly, as a guitarist in a rockband he doesn't get much chance to rap (and the rap-parts in their earlier songs seem weird as it doesn't go well with rock) and was probably just assigned that "position", so he's a bit less experienced and trained (aka not perfect). However, the way he'll sometimes play around with rhythm is so interesting and feels unique, his tone is really good, plus his lyrics to the hiphop-remix of their song "Pray" were amazing.... really, really amazing.
Pray-remix: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSlRNVytle0
Canon D-rap: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZyISTHMyvY (he sounds sooo young though haha :P)

Also like Mino and Rapmonster as rappers, but have yet to find a specific song that I love.

I am currently marathoning Shopping King Louis (half way through), and I so regret not watching it when it was still airing live, else I could have joined you all in the recaps comments.
I'm really enjoying the show. I think I'd be so annoyed with Louis in real life. But the kdrama version of him is so easily forgiven.
And who is the detective ? I have never seen him before but what a cutie too.

I totally get how you feel watching it after it aired. There were so many things I wanted to talk about.

I agree with you about Louis probably being annoying in real life, however, I think that is the appeal for me. He is not a generic male lead/character here, at least compared to the dramas I've watched. I think what's more interesting is that the other characters are aware of his shortcomings and comment on them, so it's not like the show is ignorant of them.

The detective is Kang Ji-Sub. I haven't seen him in any other dramas.

I hope you enjoy the rest of the show!

This week I binged the heck out of Shopping King Louis and Moonlight Drawn by Clouds. I really liked both, but I got to say that the male leads are ridiculously good actors.

SKL surprised me. It showed that simple characters can make for awesome characters. This is what made the lead couple very different from any other couple I've seen. They stated their emotions plainly and there was little to infer. I felt like kicking Louis butt a couple times, but he really redeemed himself in a couple ways in the end. I just have to say though, he was only able to keep his promise out of sheer dumb luck, but I guess that helped maintain the integrity of the character.

MDbC was one of the better historical dramas I've seen. The political aspect was done really well, and all the characters were enjoyable in one way or another. I got to say though, the real champion of this show has to be Park Bo Gum. That guy is amazing. He is able to mix a softer side with a more serious side really well. I really am looking forward to anything he comes out with in the future.

Some of it was hard to watch and I've had nightmares about human trafficking (omg how horrible!) but the story is so interesting that I couldn't stay away. She's only in middle school and doing really great. They rescued a baby who was being held hostage to make the mother stay in prostitution. Mom is now free, too. If nothing else, the horrors in Snail prompted me to take action, even though it is a small one. Every little bit helps. Hwaiting!

I have checked the ratings for Kim Bok Joo, and it seems that they're increasing, they even reach 5%. Well that's a lot if you have to go against top Hallyu star like JJH. But even LOTBS seems to be a little bit struggling to me, well because this drama is supposed to match the same success as YWCFTS right? Yet at episode 8, they are still havent passed their supposed 20% ratings. Well correct me if I am wrong.

0

@ap Yeah, it's too bad, Weightlifting just got so much heart. I can only utter high praises for Lee Sung Kyung ang Nam Joo Hyuk, both are seriously waaah, when they are on the screen at the same time, my heart just leaps and bounds. Kudos to all the cast too, they are all 3D characters you actually feel for them too.
I have nothing against LOBS, but I just can't feel it, LMH and JJH has zero chemistry in my eyes, unpopular opinion please don't kill me!

@Super Foxy Thank God! Rise Weightlifting Fairy rise! I hope at least they reach a 10? is that too much to ask? But I guess Nam Joo Hyuk and Lee Sung Kyung have nothing lose, but gain instead since they are clearly underdogs, no such expectations for them, but their improved acting will surely, I hope, may open many doors in the future. Win win situation.

0

I can imagine Kim Bok Joo shouting "Fighting!" with a determined look when she sees the viewership ratings slowly increasing every week. WFKBJ deserves much more love but I just feel very sad that it is likely to be buried under LOTBS fame even if LOTBS does not meet SBS expectation.

I just have a very random thought... Kim Bok Joo reminds me of Jun Ji Hyun's character in My Sassy Girlfriend. The toughness, sassiness and the 'bullying' of the male lead.

Lee Sung Kyung is an excellent actress. If she manages to get her name out there, she will take on roles that Jun Ji Hyun is taking now in the future. They have the same niche area. As long as Lee Sung Kyung has a domestic hit in the near future, she will have immense potential to succeed.

I feel you! I feel you all! I'm so lonely here, but that's expected at my place. One sister is bingeing on lakorn, another on a c-drama. I tried to get another sister on WFKBJ but the only time when she actually paid attention was during Jong Suk's cameo (she's been in love since W) and a part-way through she and another sister who was passing by while we watched asked me when the heroine would get a makeover. I was so unhappy with that comment tbh because 1) Bok Joo is adorable and doesnt need to change and 2) thats not what the story is about!

it was so nice to bump to a fellow weightlifting fangirls. swag!

you can tell your friend to watch "she was pretty" if she's looking for a goose turning to swan. hah!

she really does not need to change because she was really cute and all. i am really so tired of a plot that they would only notice the girl once they transformed. it was like saying "only beautiful girls has the right to have a love life". oh pls

You are not alone, I also need to vent my fangirl feelings for WF after that rooftop scene. ? I died from the cuteness (and hit replay a few times...). You could see the hearts in Joong Hyun's eyes from a mile away, he was so happy to hear that she was not scared of the ex, and he would not let her go, hehe!! I swear this romance is so perfect.❤️ It's going to be hard to wait one week for the next episode!!

You know why Joon Hyung is so precious? Because he just wants to make Bok Joo as happy as possible, even if that means Her loving someone else. He's got no dirty agenda, just pure unadulterated irrevocable affection for her and for her well-being, Isn't that so sweet? And him drawing a clear line on Shi Ho, what a breath of fresh air. His not some douche who wanted both girls and making them fight for him like sooo many KDrama's out there. And Bok Joo + her 2 musketeers, so adorable, friendship goals ultimate, its nice that they finally got to clear the air.
What I also love about this show is the message that however the same circumstances they are in (as with Bok Joo and Shi Ho, with athlete pressure and heartbreaks) it depends on the support system how well a person handles a situation (re: Bok Joo and Shi Ho). And the ever so beautiful another underlying message that the right man will love you for you are.
P.S. Where is the recap? It feels like crashing in a party here (even though this is an open forum). heheh

I am so toast, I had 5 tours today blergh. but at least the groups were fun not some jerks.

My friends all have the Train To Busan frenzy, they watched it in the digital TV - with their 5-y-olds btw.

I would like to recommend them some kid friendly movies and dramas. Can you name some? Preferably not with a terminal illness or dead mom.

watching: finished The Kings´ Face and I overall really liked it. if anything, it went on too steadily like a straight line, but still.

watched Bok Joo, but not too into it. that´s about it, I miss the film festival with a movie every night. I am so bored without it ( but then, I am also out of money for tickets. )

writing down a "story of my life" type of thing for a competition (folklore archives again, the competition named "The love of my life") and having the theme of fandoms and things I have loved, especially music. it is pretty hard to remember what exactly I was crazy about in 1991 or 1995 and so on. (a little in the theme of Reply 1997, but me as a fan was not as out there). I do remember the very first record I liked which is Disney Songs for Bedtime. I also suddenly remembered how I was an eager fan of Ricky Martin (not openly of course) in 1998. LOL. in 2000 it was My Star by Brainstorm from the Eurovision. do you remember all the things you have liked throughout the years? do you have any items that help you preserve the memory? I have a personal treasure box with weird stuff like a horse shoe from a song festival parade and a draft of a poem written for a personal idol.

I've kept a journal since I was in 8th grade (age 13-14 -- I'm almost 38 now), and it's pretty funny to see what I found important. I do recall the first record I loved: I wouldn't go to sleep unless my mom played ABBA's song "Fernando" when I was 3-4 years old. When I was 9-10, all of my friends were in love with New Kids on the Block. I didn't get it. Middle school was all about Duran Duran's 90s album, as well as New Order. High school and college, I loved Enrique Iglesias, Arabic music, and Nine Inch Nails. I know, I'm still all over the place musically! Well, there ya go!

the arabic music reminds me, I really liked a pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali khan at one point, cause my Dad is a singer in a choir and he has some strange favorites, besides Andrea Boccelli he likes singers from India and Pakistan! maybe cause during soviet time the Bollywood movies were some of the only foreign movies they could see in the cinema. I started liking it when I got more serious as a folk festival goer.

this is my "first record". how did a disney record end up in Estonia in 1981? granny was allowed to visit her brother in Canada and he gave it to her.

Kid friendly Korean movies: Speedy Scandal, Hello Ghost, Jeon Woo Chi, basically you can trust Cha Tae Hyun's movies but some of them may be a tearjerker so you may want to read the synopsis beforehand.

Kid friendly Korean dramas: Wang's Family, My Husband has a family, basically KBS weekend dramas which are usually 50 episodes long.

How old are the kids? I watched Dae Jang Geum when I was 9 and I fell in love with the drama, followed by My Name is Kim Sam Soon and then I was attracted to Hyun Bin (at age 10), which was why I watched Snow Queen. I loved Goong which I watched when I was 11.

You want Korean?

If not, I would go for Studio Ghibli. With that age range, Spirited Away, Ponyo, Kiki's Delivery Service, My Neighbour Totoro.

There are Korean animations: Leafie, a Hen into the Wild; Yobi the Five-Tailed Fox; Poporo; maybe Satellite Girl and Milk Cow.

0

You could also try and look for the "Ronja" anime – Goro Miyazaki was involved.

I never finished watching it (need to pick it up again) but the episodes I saw showed great understanding of the source material. And I loved that book as a 10 year old.

0

Leafie broke my heart at 2 am, one night. Still sad ?

0

Oh dear. I never actually watched that one, but they advertised as part of the kids section at the Korean Film Festival....

I didn't include Oseam, precisely because it has a sad ending... (poetic but maybe to heavy for a 5 year old?)

0

@alua

It was a beautifully told story and made me connect with all the characters. But the law of the wild was very realistic.

So of course, I immediately texted my bestie to watch and share my bittersweet pain.

Agree that lot of Cha Tae Hyun movies are family-friendly. and he even have a genre of his own. Always expect a lot of twists in his movies especially Hello Ghost.

Hello chingus! Just started become Seo Inguk recently this year and immediately, honestly and truly infatuated. But I've read a lot of comments that goes saying; he is so underrated, he needs to be appreciated more and the list can go on. Does he really an underrated actor? Because due to my poor stalking skills, he looks decently popular to me. Because it seemed like he have lots of international fans too, so why is he still considered as underrated in SK? Heee well I am just curious about my bae, thats all.

Required fields are marked *

I think we talk about him being underrated because his dramas get low domestic ratings. And he isn't so much the "go to basic lead". Idk if he's not offered those or if he's just not interested, but he does very niche roles. So his dramas become cult following rather than hits.

Just ask @redfox how many times she's watched I Remember You or stalked SIG threads. Teehee, love your fangirling, redfox!

@Purple Owl oh but his cable dramas are doing well in terms of ratings right? And how we define this 'go to basic lead criteria'? Because to me SIG is totally lead actor criteria. Heee.

I have no idea if the ratings are good or not. But I think his talent is respected domestically and internationally.

I guess I'd define "go to lead" as the first offered roles:
Ji Sung
Lee Min Ho
Kim Rae Won
Joo Won
Ji Hyun Woo
Jang Hyuk
Lee Sang Yoon
Hyun Bin
Gong Yoo
Jang Keun Suk
Lee Jong Suk is (almost) there
Cha Seung Won
Song Joong Ki
Lee Seung Gi

So not many in the under 30s range. Idk that's just my guess. Mind if I ask in next week's OT?

@Purple Owl aaah that's give me some light. Haha forgive me but what's OT?

Maybe it's just me, but SIG definitely belongs on your list if even JKS and JHW are included there. And judging by his recent surge in popularity, Lee Jong Suk is most definitely there already. He is everywhere these days.

I've always been bothered by drama characters driving without looking at the road and Lee Minho is the recent offender. I got really curious and tried it if it's really possible. (Note: I did it on an empty side road around 10:30 with no other cars around.)

So yeah, I could only do 2 seconds at best and that's with my heart racing like hell. Everyone, please always keep your eyes on road!

Currently reading Cnovel online: If I Have You, What More Could I Ask For In This Life? (如若有你一生何求 [医生,一生何求]), and The Healing Sunshine (厘米的阳光), these 2 are so *asdfghjkl* good. Guess I'll be lost in Cnovel land for a while.

Happy Friday, dear friends!

I have a question for Chinese-drama lovers: I've got some Chinese-speaking patrons who are interested in us acquiring movies & series. But I don't know too much about what's on offer.

So far, I've only added "Coming Home" and "The Mermaid" - any other suggestions?

Happy Friday, DB'ers

I'm looking for help here. A friend mentioned a plot to a SoKor movie, and I am trying to find the name.

Plot:
Man has an affair but gets in an accident with his girlfriend in his vehicle. Then his wife ends up having an affair with the husband of the girlfriend. Sounds convoluted. Yes!

Thanks!

Hi dear beanies!

I've been hanging around for quite some time reading all the brilliant writing and comments on DB. Finally decided to jump in with a question - really suffering from massive SIG withdrawal after SKL (rewatching his dramas and variety shows didn't help assuage the emptiness much and the thought of his impending enlistment kills me...), and hoping someone could help me out.

In Jan this year, there were news (also posted on DB) that SIG and Kim Ji Won would be starring in a web drama together called Romance Island, and it's to be aired on China's Sohu.com. Anyone has any idea whether that's confirmed and when it would be aired? I've been searching online for any updates and other than character briefs (SIG's character sounds super interesting and tragic) and short synopsis, there appears to be no info on filming progress and such. There was one (and only one) site mentioning that it's scheduled to be aired on 31 Dec 2016. But since there's been no collaborating info and no signs of any form of publicity, I'm wondering if I should get my hopes up.

Would any beanies have more info on this? Much appreciate!

Hugs to all!

Just done with the first 3 episodes of Goblin. Keeping the 4th one for the middle of the week, so I have something to watch while waiting for 5 & 6.

Just as a lot of others have said, the cinematography is gorgeous. The OSTs too. Although in some instances, it felt a little draggy when they lingered and showed shots after shots at different angles. In some of those long melancholic scenes, I'm ashamed to admit that I fast forwarded... Still, I'm really psyched about this drama and how the plot is gonna unfold! A few people have called it alr: Grim reaper being the king, sunny the goryeo queen. If that is indeed the case then the anticipation and excitement now lies in how all this past connections will be unravelled. Meanwhile, I'm enjoying the bromance, GIVE ME MOAR.
