The pretty and fierce guardians of Silla in first teaser for Hwarang

The first teaser is out for KBS’s new youth fusion sageuk Hwarang, a drama that takes place 1,500 years ago during the Silla Dynasty. The story revolves around the Hwarang warriors, known for being handsome and militarily skilled, as they exhibit their fiery passion, encounter love, and grow as men and warriors.

The teaser offers us a glimpse of the six main Hwarang warriors played by Park Seo-joon (She Was Pretty), Park Hyung-shik (High Society), Min-ho (Because It’s the First Time), Do Ji-han (Basketball), Jo Yoon-woo (I Order You), and Kim Tae-hyung aka V of Bangtan Boys (BTS). Park Seo-joon plays a brave, legendary warrior of low birth who falls in love with Go Ara (You’re All Surrounded). Go Ara’s character is half commoner and half royal, and she’s sunny and honest. Park Hyung-shik plays a lonely, distrustful king who secretly becomes a Hwarang warrior and in the process regains his strength and leadership ability. V plays the innocent maknae, Jo Yoon-woo plays the handsome one harboring inner turmoil, Do Ji-han plays the one with expensive taste and great political ambitions, and Min-ho plays the chivalrous Casanova.

The teaser opens with Park Seo-joon’s intense gaze as he wields a sword. Sung Dong-il (Legend of the Blue Sea), the overseer of Hwarang, addresses the empress dowager played by Kim Ji-soo (Memory) and describes his Hwarang warriors as a “beautiful and special existence” willing to risk their lives for the sake of the country and the people; he says Hwarang is the future of this divine nation.

Park Seo-joon declares, “Hwarang, with the spirit of the divine nation and on behalf of the divine nation and imperial family, will do our utmost.” The rest of the warriors repeat this mantra and draw their swords in unison as they stand in formation.

The teaser is a decent breadcrumb with quick flashes of the main Hwarang warriors and lengthier screentime for lead Park Seo-joon. Also, is there a drama Sung Dong-il hasn’t appeared in this year? After the disappointment that was Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, I’m tempering my expectations for Hwarang. Expect nothing, and I’ll never be disappointed, right?

Hwarang is fully pre-produced and will premiere on December 19.

Seriously, what is up with the costumers of Korean Entertainment. Is it a budget issue? So many sageuk costumes nowadays, look cheap, tacky, and badly done.

Even the sets are lackluster and do not connote an epic sense, or a transportation to a different time period. The last kdrama that was able to achieve this, was Empress Ki, and that is in part because they went all the way to China to film at Haedan Studios.

The order day I watched bits and pieces of Dae Jang Guem and Jumong again. What happened to those kind of dramas, where have all the sageuk writers and directors gone?

When was the last time a sageuk was seen as a national drama, 'Moon Embracing the Sun' perhaps, and even that had a lackluster second half. Korea really needs to step up, if they want to continue to lead the Hallyu wave/Asian cultural export market.

This show is produced by Oh! Boy Project of Flower Boy Ramyan Shop, Flower Boy Next Door, Shut Up Flower Boy Band. This is just a sageuk version of the Flower Boy series.
That's why it looks like a crappy sageuk.

KBS has produced a lot of epic sageuks in the past. The King's Dream (2012-13) featured the Hwarangs in it with the young Kim Yu-shin played by No Young-hak <3.

This cast is joke, Sung Dong-Il is the only legit sageuk actor in it. Maybe they should've kept this flower boys series in modern times.

ok, I like Park Seo Joon and I'm curious as to how he will tackle his first sageuk role. But more than anything, I will watch this for V, this is his dream come true. Sort of testing the water if he's got any future as an actor. Hope the story is good coz Not too long ago we had a back to back sageuk marathon - Moonlight and Moonlovers, with the latter sucked the life out of me with its wteff ending. All that time for nothing. So I am still tired from that. And Sung Dong Il is here again.

Is it wrong if I wish first teaser of Hwarang just good crazy like Boombastic MDBC? Another song like Boombastic with the sword dance? So people will get curious about this drama.

Well, yes you are indeed the minority. The teaser was a viral hit both in SoKor and internationally. It's tongue-in-cheek and even the actors who feature in it know it so I have absolutely no problems with it. KBS did it too with My Lawyer Mr. Jo with Park Shinyang and all the buttoned-up lawyers strutting their stuff. As for me, it's not tacky if the creators and actors themselves don't take it seriously. KBS did great with those promos and the ratings can attest to that.

I hate it when the guys generally get to harbor inner turmoils or great political ambitions while the one girl is described as sunny and honest. It reminds me of this Korean made animation my kids used to watch, "Robocar Poli": the only girl is described in the French version of the theme song as being "friendly" while the guys are brave, strong and heroes through and through...

I had so much hope for MLSHR's female lead, and we all know how that ended up. But I think it also serves to show that there is also an audience that does not it when you mess with the formula.

I really like PSJ, so I'll still give it a watch. Having said that, I'm beginning to realise that many of us seem to be willing to give a drama the benefit of the doubt because of a particular actor, even it it looks or turns out to be terrible. I've done that twice this year. Don't know how much more I can take, sigh.

I don't think ML really went all out. They didn't try hard enough to make the female lead stronger and more likable. On the other hand, they did try very hard to make Wang So a more sympathetic character. Even though the novel was completely female centric! This is why I'm generally against female actors taking "lesser" lead roles. They almost always diminish the charms of the female lead to make the male lead shine. I'm saying this even though I'm a complete LJK fan. (I still much prefer female centric dramas though.) Also why I'm of the opinion that he needs to take a small step back when it comes to role selection.

On the point that "many of us seem to be willing to give a drama the benefit of the doubt because of a particular actor". I completely agree. It's natural! But I also think it's not as bad as denying that the drama is bad even when it's absolute shite just because your favourite actor is starring in it.

I am having serious Queen Seondeok & Bidam withdrawal these days, and even though the teaser doesn't give away much, I will probably watch it just to remember that wonderful, wonderful series. Somebody bring back Bidam, Yushin and Alcheon Rang for me! :(

As for this drama, their hair is too straight. Park Seo Joon is still okay, but everyone elses has too much of a fresh outta salon look- and it just isn't attractive on warriors. Would it be too much to ask for the hair stylist for Gat ByungYeon/ Wang So/Baby Moohyul or Bang Ji to come through and give them all a proper mane of glory? (Ah well, since production is done anyway :( )

Speaking of Bidam and Wang So, did anybody notice the similarities between the characters? From the clothing, to the hair and even the expressions- Kim Nam Gil and LJK even had the same quirk with their mouths when their characters seem annoyed. :P

OMG, I have just realized it ! Now I know why I felt easily attached to Wang So character. They do share similar traits, they could be a warm and kind humanbeing then become a cold blood murderer in just a split of second. I guess it's just my type (in dramaland only) XD

Required fields are marked *

Haha, it worked the other way round for me, because I watched QSD after ML, and got attached to Bidam after So.

I think there were tons of similar traits too (the slight psychopathic tendency to murder, revenge against those who hurt the ones they loved, their mothers, the way they loved, the clothing and hair). Since during ML I focused so much on SO's expressions, when I went and saw Bidam I saw so many of the same. Two extremely talented actors I must say, for creating two iconic characters.

Well it looks load better than their posters. Growing up with bishies in animes and mangas makes it easier for me to accept this new take on the Hwarang of Silla. I kind of like how they look when they reciting their vows or something. Their uniformed looks make it more believable since they are still after all a military unit, albeit a more flowery one. I wished they show them in full battle gear doing a real fight scene. And I hope we get to see them do battle scenes in the show rather than just merely parading around, preening or moping for their love interest.

It would be really cool to see a storyline like that but I've read some history about the hwarang and it never mentioned anything about them being used by the king in that way. Although they were created by the king with the purpose of having a well educated elite group that could fight. You never know though little is known anyways about the original hwarang

I've never thought Park Seo Joon beautiful enough to be cast as a Hwarang warrior. His looks are better suited for modern settings and maybe Joseon period. With good styling for Silla, he might pass but it's unfortunate that the styling here fails.

I don't think straight long hair is the problem. Have you seen Frozen Flower? Many Chinese wuxia movies have the male leads in straight hair too and they look masculine and fantastic nonetheless.

The problem here is they went overboard with trying to make everything pretty. If you have a good looking cast, let the clothes, color, hair and accessories take a back seat. Keep them muted. The better Chinese productions have very beautiful costumes with lots of details but they are tastefully subdued or rather they never overpower your senses.

Park Seo Joon looks good and believable when he's intense. Not so much for the rest. The idol actors reminds me too much of Baekhyun in Moon Lovers.

There was this popular Indian drama I once watched. The leads had so many bts and interviews and the male lead acted like a joker at times so the fandom would call him bhaiyya, even though not one of us meant it. I mean we'd be damned if we meant to call someone as hot as him, bhaiyya. (To clarify, then. He was hot then) That stuck with me, and now i use it in my K-drama and K-pop endeavours.

Ofcourse I'd never use it on Jo Jung Seok. He's my bae.

I think I am the only who doesn't actually care about trailer unless it super good,
imo Kdrama trailer never actually shows anything other than their looked and the set, way different with Chinese drama trailer,

I don't think this is gonna be bad because we have no episode to tell at this moment, and I am willing to try it,

for the wig, I find this is Silla's style and it's not gonna work for everybody face, I just find it believable enough and who knows if this drama gonna be the winner,

as much as the hair or style is not fit as people said, I find the story is way more important,
even half-bald style in BBJX is endurable when you liked the story

I feel attacked by the blandness of the filter. And it's the one thing that is usually exactly the same in drama and trailer *sigh* I really wanted to watch this, but after failing to like any of the Moon sageuks, I think I'll just wait until it's finished and see what everyone says.

And I agree, for some reason, although he's the main reason I wanted to watch this, PSJ does not look very sageuk-y.

The teaser seems dull. And those hairs are ugly. Hmmm why Park Seo Jun whyyyy you do this drama. You don't have a 'saeguk' face. I wish you do a modern drama instead :(((

Omo, so much negativity in here...As for me, I didn't expect something groundbreaking so I wasn't disappointed with this first trailer, I even liked it. Why nitpick on such trivial things like wigs? Okay , they're ugly and then? Ugly wigs are a deal breaker for you? You can't overlook it? Will it spoil your viewing experience?lol Anyway, only few actors can pull off the mane of glory : Lee Jun Ki, Byun Yo Han and Kwak Dong Yun. Others are meh at best imo.

I'm not ashamed to say I'm here mainly for Hyungsik and since it is his drama's come back (Summer 2015 feels so far away now), there's no way I'd skip it. Plus, I've already lowered my expectations the day they decided to cast Shinee's Minho, Go Ara and BTS's V (though the latter deserves a chance since it's his first acting gig) Still, the underwhelming supporting cast hasn't deterred me from watching it (I'm ready to be proven wrong), I will just ignore it and put my entire focus on both male leads instead ... Just give me fluff, eye candies and a decent plot and I'm in for the ride.

And even if this drama fails, Hyungsik still has this drama with Queen Bo Young and I'm way more excited about that pairing than the one in Hwarang...Strong Woman Do Bong Soon is the drama I'm most looking forward for 2017 (when it comes to Hyungsik's projects)

I agree with you about the negativity I mean as long as the story makes me feel something I won't mind the wigs. I'm just hoping no one hates on Taehyung (V) too much since he is barely starting out.

Man, so much negativity before the drama's even aired. I feel like everyone going into the drama expecting to hate it are going to do exactly that without even giving it a real chance.

Sure the posters and teasers don't look that great, but Moon Lovers posters and teasers were nice, and look how that turned out, so that means absolutely nothing.

It seems to me like this drama isn't planning on becoming one of those epic, intense, serious sageuks that everybody loves to begin with. It looks like it's just wants to be fun and pretty, with some seriousness thrown in. If you're expecting more than that, you probably wont get it.

I'm still looking forward to this because I like a few of the cast members and I'm expecting it to be a fairly breezy watch. I hope people stop being so negative about it, and nitpick everything about it, because the truth is we wont truly know if it's any good or not until it airs.

They should have really done this drama before The Joseon Magician or cast someone other than Go Ara. Because now I keep thinking back to that movie and all the pretty! They might be flower boys, but as pretty as they are they got nothing on Yoo Seung‑ho! <3

But I can't wait for the premiere! Giving this drama a chance :)
