More flower boy warriors and a princess for Hwarang

Additional character posters are out for KBS’s upcoming fusion sageuk Hwarang. Hwarang is a fully pre-produced, coming-of-age story that takes place 1500 years ago during the Silla dynasty, centering around the Silla Hwarang warriors who were known for their flower boy looks as well as their military prowess. It’s a youth sageuk that will depict the warriors’ fiery passions and loves as they grow as men and fighters. Park Seo-joon (She Was Pretty), Go Ara (You’re All Surrounded), and Park Hyung-shik (High Society) headline.

Here we have flower boy warrior Min-ho (Because It’s the First Time). Hot-blooded and chivalrous, he’s also known as the resident playboy. However, contrary to popular belief, he’s actually not a serial womanizer, but a man who has a dedicated love. Do Ji-han (Basketball) plays a callous and prickly “gold and silver spoon” young man with great political ambitions.

Seo Ye-ji (Moorim School) plays Princess Sook-myung, a lonely and unhappy young woman due to her sheltered royal upbringing. Jo Yoon-woo (I Order You) is handsome on the outside and harbors sharp thorns of pain on the inside. The youngest warrior is played by V of Bangtan Boys (BTS), and he’s described as a fresh-faced boy with a pure spirit.

The posters definitely scream flower-boy loud and clear, but the cheery tone is a major contrast to the dark and somber posters of recently concluded sageuk Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, which was also populated with beautiful boys. I think we’re in for lighter fare this time, but I hope there’s going to be some drama underneath all the sunshine and flowers.

Hwarang premieres on December 19 after The Man Living in Our House ends its run.

I'm not biased about anything (hopefully)... But I think I will end my silence now. I'm not alone in saying that the original BBJX (w/ Nicky Wu) was better. I don't like to sound like a hater, a "complete fanatic of the Chinese" version, or be mobbed by the large following of Scarlet Ryeo. To each his own, but I gave Moon Lovers (KR) a chance.

Scarlet Ryeo, to be fair, had huge fanbase. I like IU very much so I'm happy it was a huge success for her. But I will be honest now: The original Bubu Jing Xin was really better. Promise.

The posters sure are pretty. I like the bright, blurry background contrasting with the clear image of each character.

The guys' hairstyles are definitely bad.

I'd like it if this drama can balance both the lighter side of things along with the deeper, angsty scenes. I don't want it to be pure fluff.

The posters are pretty! Yes, it reminds me to Moonlight's individual posters (which were totally amazing). But sadly instead of Joseon's simplicity, it has Silla's trademark of long hair and fancy accessories (that is surely exaggerated).

But on the other side, keep it in mind that this (along with Moonlight and The Man Who Lives in Our House) would be the only ones of KBS mid-length rom-com this year.

Moon Lovers posters were too photo-shopped for my taste with all the smoke and dark filters. Plus, the floating heads! Eeeek. Moonlight's posters were good. Simple, been-there-done-that but fresh and lovely. I think KBS is doing the same with Hwarang but I just don't see the lightness of Moonlight's promo materials applying to Silla's warriors.

My fav mane of glory was the monk slaughter scene...LJK looked ethereally beautiful and his moves were so graceful yet deadly, and when he took a deep breath and closed his eyes, and the scene froze, he was beyond beautiful....ah, I miss Wang So so much....sobs...

Sometimes we mistakenly equate pre-production with quality. I don't know how k-drama production works, but the creative team may not actually spend the extra time on the show. Maybe because of budget constraints, they don't hire editors for longer periods to polish the show. If the writer and director are not all that exceptional, then they might not deliver a story even with longer planning stage. I was under the impression that because of various factors such as budgets, and actor's schedules, they just don't have as much time to spend on the show as pre-production might suggest. Movies are all shot before their release, and yet we end up with terrible films. Dramas ate the same. While most shows benefits from pre-production, it doesn't automatically guarantee a well thought out show.

I agree with your main points, but I mostly prefer pre-produced dramas because there's less (or no) actors with blood-shot red eyes and dark circles underneath. It's distracting, and it points out the rough working conditions that the cast and crew have to go put up with to deliver 120 minutes of content every week. I always get 8 hours of sleep the night before a working day, and I'd want the same for the people who make the dramas I watch.

While it can cause slackness as we saw with Scarlet Heart: Ryeo, I'd prefer that than the stressful working environment in which dramas are live-shot. Specifically speaking of SH:R, I doubt they could've salvaged it if it was liveshot. It just had too many issues, and if they resolved some, others would crop up.

I hope channels won't shy away from pre-produced dramas but rather take away from their failures and build on it.

yes you are right. Pre-Production definitely has more pros than con. I just wanted to point out that, we, dramabeans readers, hold a different expectation from shows that are not live shoot. flimming earlier is a plus for actors and crews, but it doesn't mean the story would be something epic or amazing.

Oh that we do. We think "Oh it's 100% pre-produced. They must've reviewed the editing, music, continuity etc. many times before broadcast." To be honest, Scarlet Heart Ryeo and Cheese in the Trap broke my bubble. But I still think Scarlet Heart:Ryeo (which is the hot topic these days) couldn't have pulled a Producers just by changing the direction style or editing the script. There was also Uncontrollably Fond and Cinderella and the 4 Knights, both of which I dropped, the former because of the done-to-death script and latter because half way through they ruined my favourite character. I don't think there was much they could've done about either of these shows either, because both were flawed at the script-level.

I do think Beanies in general will be more wary of pre-produced dramas now.

Required fields are marked *

Personally, I'd prefer a drama that was 50% pre-produced. That way, the production schedule won't be tight but the team can still take audience response into account. I think TvN uses this system (which also explains why they produce some top-quality dramas).

Required fields are marked *

Yes you're right TvN dramas usually have atleast 4-5 episodes down before the first broadcast. I think it's a good practice too and the Big 3 should definitely follow lead.

So I completely misread the character descriptions and got excited by myself. I totally read Minho's character as having a dedicated love for Do Ji Han because I thought I saw a comma. I really thought for a second that Minho's character, despite looking like a player, is actually lowkey, a player for the other team. I was so proud of the progressiveness of the drama for a second and was thinking if this were truly the case I'd have to watch it, manes of shame be damned. I was anticipating all the delicious and heartwrenching forbidden love angst reminiscent of Reply 1997 or The Lover. But nope, just my delusions acting up again. However since I'm on the topic, can we get another loveline like Takuya and Joonjae again? That ends happily? Please?

This hair looks better than the average hair in moon lovers and as I remember, this is the hairstyle in Silla as in QSD and Sadam.
We can't expect they all to look fabolous cause not all people that lived in the era can pull off the hairstyle to,
just like in Qing dinasty..
