Guys, what should I do to recover from this tragic SHR? TT.TT
Why oh why did I watch it at the first place!?

Watch all the behind the scenes, interviews, photoshoots to remind yourself that they are just fictional characters and the actors are happy, healthy and perfectly fine. That's all I've been doing since Tuesday.

Thanks for the suggestion Angeline, but for me those only make it worse TT.TT

If I watch all my fave scenes, bts, interviews & photoshoots I cried and cried and cried! And if I don't I just miss them like crazy TT.TT

I swear I am swearing off saeguks for awhile. Mirror of the Witch, Moonlight Drawn by Clouds, and Moon Lovers. Three saeguks back-to-back is probably a new record for me. Gimme some wishy-washy romcom with zero plot, or that perfect slice of life drama from TvN.

I admire you! Seriously, I want to get into Saeguks but everything I hear is depressing: they died. They died. Yeah, they went crazy and then died (I don't know about that one). Even in Arang and the Magistrate, they died! Both of them! multiple times!

I'm thinking of watching Moonlight Drawn By the Clouds, that seems like a happy one.

I have like a love-hate relationship with saeguks. I always say I'm never gonna watch another one but then I do, cause they're always more thrilling, but in return also more heartbreaking. If you wanna get into saeguks I would recommend starting off with youth saeguks, cause they're just generally fluffy. I highly recommend Sungkyungkwan Scandal, it's really lighthearted and fun, minimal politics, and I love it to bits. In that sense, I feel a bit cheated by Moonlight Drawn by Clouds, cause they promised/set themselves out to be a youth saeguk, but towards the last 8 episodes or so they totally flipped and went full political on me, and while I do love my fair share of political struggles in a saeguk, I was kinda like I did not sign up for this! Or you know if you wanna dive straight in and go for a full blown saeguk, I highly recommend Six Flying Dragons or Empress Ki. They're both really long but so satisfying.

I'd like to add Tree with Deep Roots! 24 episodes only and I marathoned this show because it's better than my expectation. Surprisingly good sageuk.

I started Six Flying Dragons and loved it... but I was also watching Signal at the time (I think it was Signal?) and that one won out. But I'll definitely be back.

@gabobobobo, I totally want to watch Tree With Deep Roots, especially now learning Korean. It's all about king SeJong, right?

@cozybooks: Yes, it's about King Sejong in the process of Hangul creation against the political conflict and machination. This show got a solid writing and solid casts (Han Suk-Kyu, Jang Hyuk, Joo Jin Woong, etc). I totally recommend it to you if you want to learn about the history of Hangul. This is "drama that has taken a creative license to history" done right, LOL.

Agree on this. I was disappointed in Moonlight later when the story (the heroine) turned to be depressing.

I am actually thinking a sageuk-characters Afterlife like in Tim Burtons´ Beetlejuice except everyone is in hanboks. and they will have their own sageuk plot except they are already dead so no one can die no matter how many times they kill each other. Their scars will magically heal then appear on the opposite side, and their lips become deformed after a kiss. then one of the dead sageuk characters will escape from their limbo into the modern world and disguise as a PD in a Big 3 company and decide to have it his way in the most popular drama after the real PD goes missing, and writes all the dead characters back in resurrecting them. By putting a mattress under the Cliff or something. also, there are random fight scenes just to showcase Teachers´ skills. as you might have guessed from the last note, yours truly would be the PD´s assistant. always glad to assist in death errr, I mean, the deads.

Happy Friday and week-end everyone!

My week was all about Misaeng: i finished it today.

I need some hope: is there a life after this drama? In Geu Rae's words: "can i be ambitious again?" Can i get my projects, motivation, attention back?

This show took everything and left miserable with only my feels....

0

Required fields are marked *

:) there is hope, and there is a life after this drama, although, it took me some time to get back into kdrama's after misaeng, not because it was bad, but because of its profound effect on your point of view, it is heavy, and it's a drama i'm not sure i can rewatch because it is complex and makes you look beyond the typical makjang/romcom genre,

"Can i be ambitious again" is kinda apt to where i am at life at the moment, but i believe you can be motivated, and ambitious again, although it might just take you some time,
so hang in there, watch something fluffy to elevate the heavy feelings , you'll get there :)

Thank you for your comforting words!

I really need to warm my heart after all those tears!

I don't know what's this drama had done to me: i loved it but kept crying, i need to move on new things instead of being glued to my screen but i just don't want to leave those characters.
I want one thing and it's opposite and my heart hurts.

And those people weren't even real! I feel however closer to them than to some real people i know...

i know the feeling of being closer to them than real people,
it's cause it's told right and believable, somehow i imagine the drama based on real-life situations and people,

(ps i also kept crying, probably the most i've cried during a series)

That's how I felt to an extent after watching Misaeng, strangely enough it was the K2 that kept me going. I was watching the two concurrently (until I finished Misaeng) and all the intense action got me going again when I started to feel the drag of life in my real life.

Like @Sia I don't know when I'll rewatch it, just because it changed my outlook on life so much. But I'm definitely glad I watched it. Have some raspberry chocolate, I believe in you!

Does anybody think that the k-drama industry will bring out more stuff like Uncontrollably Fond and MLSHR only to cater to the international viewer market especially in China? Meaning pre-produced and attached to a Hallyu actor brand? Do you think the producing quality is lower now?

Of course if one watches k-drama you don't expect HBO quality but I find those recent attempts are lacking compared to previous Hallyu hits. Most of the former at least had substance, a clear narrative and good acting. Right now I have the feeling they just stuff pretty faces together and put them on screen in Subway as often as possible.

Required fields are marked *

Just like GoT kicked off the trend for killin all of your characters in 2011 it was kind of YWCFTS who brought back the hallyu hit in 2014. Since then the caterin to China has become extremly visible. And they do try to remake that syndrome again that the show set with its fashion and trend status but ever since then I never got the feelin that they were successful. They tried to hype DOTS and Song Joong Ki to a Kim Soo Hyun level but I doubt it was successful.

I feel like nowadays 'hallyu hits' are a pre prodcut of aggressive international marketing by hyping everyone before and get them to automatically watch it. Then you simultaneously broadcast it and claim it's a hit. But it's like a Marvel blockbuster literally everywhere you can't escape so you just watch it automatically. Previously it felt like audiences choose to like a certain drama and make it a hit. Now it feels like you are told to like a drama and make it a hit.

After "Five Kids" ended, I just started to search for more "weekend" dramas, and started to watch "Laurel Tree Tailors".

The cast is perfect, but the first episodes were a bit messy. Now, almost 20 episodes later, it's my favorite drama on air right now.

Lee Dong-gun is just the sweetest man ever! And I was doubting on his chemistry with Jo Yoon-hee, but now, oh boy...

Every single plot is interesting, and let me say again: the cast is AMAZING.

So watching Jealousy Incarnate I must say Jo Jung Seok is killin it with his performance. I don't like his character but man the acting is just so fitting.

His acting approach is so Broadway and he reminded me of Neil Patrick Harris in how he uses his whole body and over exagerated facial expressions to convey what his character is feeling.

I feel the exact same way about Hwa Shin with Barney Stinson. Both are spoiled and immature manchilds who are just straight assholes but thanks to the performance you can't help but kinda like it.

Hello all!
I only recently discovered KDramas (in the last 2 months) and I don't think I'll ever go back to boring U.S. dramas ever again! It's so fun discovering KDramas from the past few years... to ones premiering right now! Any recommendations you all have? I love the community here at DramaBeans and any suggestions will definitely be added to my list!

-----

ANYWAYS, I just started watching "School 2013" and guys... Lee Jong-Suk and Kim Woo Bin are on my screen AT THE SAME TIME! What is this magical-ness?
I've been a fan of Lee Jong-Suk since I watched "Pinocchio"
(so far my favorite KDrama of all time) and more recently "W - Two Worlds". I think he is a fantastic actor! His movements and facial expression convey so much more than words ever could. I found Kim Woo Bin in "Heirs" and "Uncontrollably Fond" and have been so impressed by his strengths and ability to exhibit such a range of deep emotions (whether hero or villain!). Two very talented -- *confesses* and handsome -- young men!

Required fields are marked *

Hello, Sarai! Welcome, have some raspberry chocolate! And I'll confess I did a little fist pump when you said you liked Lee Jong Suk, he's the only Kdrama actor I want a giant poster of on my wall. And my desktop. And I agree so much about his acting--he has a subtlety that's hard to achieve, it's like you're reading his thoughts on his face... without an obvious cue. And he's super attractive, I won't deny I enjoy looking at his beautiful face on my screen.

So from what you mentioned and liked, I'd recommend:

Healer
Girl Who Sees Smells
Kill Me, Heal Me

Healer and Pinocchio both have reporter elements, and I just love Healer.

Girl Who Sees Smells and Kill Me, Heal Me both have the "young tragedy" element, I won't say more or I'll spoil them. But Girl Who Sees Smells gave me similar vibes to Pinocchio, although the dramas were totally different in plot and style. If that makes sense?

For a real list I'm going to need thorough guidelines.

What are your favs
Genre?
Age?
Length?
Classics?
Or 2012 up?

My favorite genre is psychological, but my home genre is romance. I love high school stories and young adult actors. The veterans are good but I tend to fall for the younger ones. I prefer 16 eps. I'll do a 20. 24 Epson takes something special after BoF & C'sS. I can't recommend nothing longer. I prefer the newer dramas but view older classics as important to the experience.

My list for now
White Christmas - watch it the 8 days of Christmas. I'll probably be watching then. it exposed me to Kim Woo Bin and some of my fav model-actors.
Reply 1997 - especially if you've ever been in fandom life. it's best or music fans but works for actor, book, movie fans. And friendship!
Coffee Prince - THE classic recommendation of all time.
Secret Garden - fair warning, it's not a fav of mine. Idk where it falls on the classic recs list. But you'll see an adorable early career LJS.
I Remember You in case you're not interested in R97, this is the SIG drama you have to know.

Let me know if any of these work. More specifics might lead others to recommend as well.

Also since I'm here, I might as well give a brief summary of what I know of the drama. So basically the story is about the female lead getting granted a wish by an angel, and her deciding which guy she wants to have her first kiss with - using the said wish.

The character descriptions:
Lee Joon Gi - chaebol
Park Hae Jin - co-worker
Ji Chang Wook - secret agent
Kai - dongsaeng
Taecyeon - rich kid
Lee Jong Suk - top star

What magic? Their brand ambassador contracts, and probably a lot of money. LOL. Lee Joon Gi, Ji Chang Wook and Lee Jong Suk just signed with them last month. I'm guessing Park Hae Jin, 2PM and EXO all have existing contracts with Lotte Duty Free.

LJG as chaebol? That's a role i have never seen him into. A rich guy(ws doesn't count,he was a prince). I would like to see him as modern romantic guy. In his modern dramas i only completed two weeks and loved it.

I think someone had a lot of fun dreaming up this plot, heh. And choosing actors to cast. They certainly know how to draw an audience, that's for sure.

After lot of rewatching Jealousy Incarnate (I need rehab, really) I think, even in first episode, HS already showed his interest to NR, whether he and NR realised it or not.

- Remember when he lashed out at DongGi PD in Thailand? He ranted about how DongGi shouldn't have made NR his shield. How he's disgusted because DG told NR to stick out her butt and boobs every time (so he diligently watch the weather after all). That he should treat the weathercaster respectfully since they are a part of news, too.
- Or when he unbutton himself when he saw NR who brought the medicine for him? Only to found NR distracted and swooned over JW, LOL.
- When he scolded NR's complainer/fan phone call (who turned out to be JW).
- When he called NR after the breast examination because he suddenly thought of her.
- When he scolded NR after the inappropriate clothes incident because she made his heart went crazy.
- When he picked up NR in drunken state and pretended to be taxi driver, later he accompanied her home while lending his jacket and telling her to find a better man than him.
- When he almost kiss her in the hospital and we found out later it's not for his ego boost. He wanted to kiss her. But, he backed out because he wasn't confident and wanted her to find healthy normal man to kiss.
- When she finally kissed him and he looked hurt because NR said she's over him.

It all happened before HS knew JW liked NR. He just haven't fully acknowledge it for whatever reason. These didn't excuse his jerk attitude, of course.

Sorry for my long ramble. I just need some place to share my thoughts about this particular events in the show. LOL

Thank you so much to everyone last week who recommended something to distract me from my depression. The ice cream recommendation was amazing.

Not as depressed this week thankfully. Got some grades back (all passing). Got some new clothes delivered and I don't feel too skinny or fat. Well, as much. And got some things off my to do list.

5 weeks left of school. More importantly less than 2 weeks until Lee Min Ho is back in dramaland! I didn't expect to be this excited.

TV this week

Korean:
UF - completed. I almost cried but I was too tired and just fell asleep. this should not be taken as my overall review of the drama
JI - next ep 14
MDBC - still need to watch the extra eps
Full House - next ep 10
FantastiC - on ep 8
Shopping King Louie - next ep 13 - ack! I really don't want this to end.
Pucca - Se2 ep 16
Real GOT7 - next ep 8
MiOH - on ep 4. this drama is my new Monday crack. Officially replaces Moonlight -> Drinking -> now Man. I am anxious for when the angst comes. I hope the comedy doesn't fall too much.
TW, MW's haA - next ep 2, eh. Not doing much for me so far.

Japanese:
Good Morning Call - next ep 3

Taiwanese:
My Queen - next ep 4

Western:

Happy friday!
Just saw Doctor Strange. At first I wasn't too fond of casting Benedict Cumberbatch but he was really good.
My only letdown was I think Mads Mikkelsen was wasted and why does he always have to be the bad guy. (in english speaking roles, my mom watched a danish police drama where he was a homicide detective)

Doramas, I've been watching Yoshida Yo's two airing doramas. I'm happy she's getting bigger projects as she's a very strong actress.
Medical team is entertaining, a all female doctor team is pretty awesome. There seems to be something going on with the main character, hallucinations to I'm intrigued.
And her second dorama is the Jdorama remake of cold case. It is very different then the typical dorama, it feels more US drama like. It's actually my favorite currently airing dorama.
I'm going to try Suna no tou with Matsuhima Nanako and Kanno Miho as well as Gakki's new dorama. I really like Hoshino Gen, Gakki not so much.

Happy Friday!

I was joking with a friend that after dramas like Moon Lovers a lot of k-addicts will go into withdrawal until they find another drama of choice. While this WAS a joke, it made me start seriously contemplating the similarities between drama addiction and substance addiction.

(For reference, I'm in the middle of getting my master's in nursing, and currently doing a clinical rotation in a substance abuse rehab center, so clinical addiction is kind of on my mind. Also this comparison is strictly for fun, not judgment Beanies.)

Like with other addictions, depending on the person it can start from one "hit" or one drama, or might take multiple dramas before the person finds they can't live without it. My journey with drama addiction started binge watching, it's not addiction if you just have a blowout once a month or so right? And later I found I had to get a couple hits a week, so I started currently airing shows to keep me from going through too many episodes at once. Now I usually have to get at least one small hit a day (like youtube clips, etc). As with alcohol or drugs we begin to use dramas to cope, as I don't have to focus on negative emotions/experiences if I'm focusing on chocolate abs, am I right? It might even limit my social interactions and gains control of my life. Even when you're not watching drama you're thinking about the drama, puzzling over the mysteries, frustrated over the lack of communication. Life is consumed by drama, and relationships can begin to deteriorate. I know I lost one friend in part because she thought I was taking Korean culture flippantly with my drama references (she is Korean and thought I believed South Korea was all dramas and pop music).

Also I find that the therapy groups I lead for drug addiction could be useful for drama addicts ~ Grief and Loss (why did everyone have to die Scarlet Heart?), Anger Management (Cheese in the Trap left me with a lot of issues), Medication Education (what are useful things to take from medical dramas and what aren't), Alcoholics Anonymous (this is what Dramabeans is for me) and so on. I know I feel the need for group therapy after certain dramas end. I wonder how many Beanies feel that?

Maybe I should start a recovery center for drama addicts once I get my master's. ;) Or maybe that would just feed into my own addiction...

All that to say, I'm not going to stop watching anytime soon, and Have a lovely Friday!

Hi fellow drama lovers. I have a question about Yoo Ah In's status in korea. Is he seen as a handsome movie star or an serious actor? Or actually both? He is the only one besides Lee Byung Hun whose acting I find profoundly deep enough for korean cinema. With others you could see that they were only casted to draw in female fans for the box office.

Can you name movies and top notch actors (female&male)? I want to start watching korea movies after seeing the brilliant The handmaiden.

Required fields are marked *

Well, start with the director of Handmaiden. Park Chan-wook is a critically acclaimed director. He is well know in Korea's film industry as well as overseas. Google him or go to IMBd for the list of his films.
Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, OldBoy, Thirst etc are some of his critically acclaimed films.

The stars of Handmaiden: Ha Jung-woo - he is one of Chungmuro's top talents and the youngest at the top. You can easily find a list of his films on the net. The Chaser (must see), Yellow Sea, Breath, Take Off etc etc.
Jo Jin-Woong - has done a fair amount of dramas lately. He is one of if not the best supporting actor in Chungmuro.

I usually follow the multi-talented directors/writer/producer like Park Chan-wook, Lee Chang-dong, Bong Joon-ho, Kim Ki-duk (master of short films) and standing ovation to Im Kwon-taek with his impressive line of work that I would not be able to watch even 1/10th of it in this life-time. You'd find 102 projects under his name at IMDb.

What brought me to K films was Lee Joon-ik's King and the Clown so I'm still a noobie trying to catch up.
Most of the actors in these talented directors' films are the top actors in Chungmuro. Song Kang-ho, Choi Min-shik, Kim Yoon-seok, Ha Jung-woo, Han Suk-kyu (currently in Romantic Doctor), and the queen of Chungmuro Jeon Do-yeon who was recently in tvN's Good Wife.
(Song Kang-ho is my bias. He's just perfect lol).

So I'm really excited about the noona romance in The Nan Living in Our House. I have a particular soft spot for noona romances. It's up there as one of my favorite romance tropes. Puppy love is the best.

Have you ever noticed that successful noona romances (where the couple ends up together) tend to NOT end in marriage or (an accepted) proposal?

From the one'a I've seen:
My name is Kim Sam Soon
I need romance 3
Flower boy ramen shop
What's up Fox
Witch's Romance
I do, I do
The woman who still wants to marry
Big
Dal Ja's Spring
Dr. Champ
Faith
I hear your voice
I love lee tae-ri
I remember you
Queen of Reversals

Baby Faced Beauty - married
Oh! My lady - accepted proposal

Now I don't think marriage has to be the end game of a romance, but isn't the ratio a bit high? It's just something I noticed recently and I'm wondering why that is. Does anyone have any ideas?

I think the ratio is because the writer is aware that they are writing a "different" drama. A noona romance. So they focus on the ending more. What is the ratio of same-age or oppa romances? I think same-age ends in a proposal at least, the most often.

Interesting question.

Hi beanies!

So in an attempt to cure my Moon Lovers heartache I’m (finally) watching My Girl. I know, about time, right? And that show led me to having a mind-boggling realisation: how come I never noticed that Lee Dong-Wook is one of the hottest men alive? What’s wrong with me? Is it the forehead? It’s the forehead, isn’t it? It’s because I had never seen his forehead before. Do I have a thing for foreheads now? So many questions…

Anyway, did any of you have that experience before? Of watching an actor that you think is completely fine though not quite your type and then one day, bam! he’s the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen?

Song Jae-rim, yes.

(Also My Girl is double yes-- no, triple yes! That show is so laugh out loud funny but also knows when to sucker-punch you with feels. The good hurty kind.)

I heard she's making a comeback next year. For her sake, I hope she chooses a good project this time.

Which dramas would you rewatch?

For me, Signal, Misaeng, Nirvana in Fire, Task Force 38, Age of Youth!

Every time someone mentions Nirvana in Fire, I want to rewatch it. And I have indeed replayed certain themes over and over. Seriously, it has erased all the association I had to Nirvana, the band, so that "nirvana" now immediately brings to mind Hu Ge's beautiful, serene, composed demeanor, and of course the rest of that drama.

I always think I'm going to rewatch Marriage Not Dating and others, like Queen In-Hyun's Man, but whenever I've started to, I just can't seem to follow through. Maybe I just remember them as being more compelling.

Ones I've definitely re-watched are:
Oh Hae Young Again
Reply 1997
Secret Love Affair
Joseon X-Files
Discovery of Romance

...and older, non-Korean dramas:

Long Vacation
Over Time
Return of the Condor Heroes
Heaven Sword & Dragon Sabre
Pride
A Million Stars Falling From the Sky
Hana Yori Dango

In Moonlight Drawn by Clouds, Park Bo-gum's character is the Moon, and his people is the cloud. So it wouldn't make sense to claim him as the cloud.

Ooops. I was too excited I hit enter before I had time to write. LOL.

Btob just came back with a new song less than an hour ago, so I'm promoting them as a new (2 weeks) fan. :)

Music video reminds me of a dramatic version of Descendants of the Sun. lol.

@aranea,

Thanks for the HTML markup tags. I've been wondering how to do blockquotes. I hope I don't get too carried away... ;-)

Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim's recap hasn't out yet (i don't even know whether DB will recap it)
:~( my heart ached watching the second episode. For Dr. Kang who lost his way and kept his anger for so long, for Dr. Yoo who suffered because of the trauma. I expect a good and heart wrenching story..

@Fye,

I, too, am hoping that Team DB is able to recap ROMANTIC DOCTOR, TEACHER KIM. (Egad, what an ungainly title...) Am thrilled out of my shoes to have another drama with Seo Hyun-Jin this year. Yay!

The opening episodes were off like a shot... and I buckled my seatbelt. It looks like this will be a wild ride.

What is it with airbags in Kdramas? Colliding with a Dump Truck of Doom should have been enough for them to deploy. Oh, right... This is Kdramaland, where airbags obstruct the view of the good-looking occupants inside the cabin... so they don't activate on impact. Someone should sic Ralph Nader on 'em...
