SBS, KBS fight over rom-com Jealousy Incarnate
by girlfriday
Well I guess it’s apt for a drama called Jealousy Incarnate to have some broadcasters feuding jealously over who gets to air the drama on their station. Nothing’s been decided yet, but the new romantic comedy starring Gong Hyo-jin (It’s Okay, It’s Love) and Jo Jung-seok (Oh My Ghostess) spent the day being alternately claimed by SBS and then KBS in their summer/fall lineups, while the drama’s producers say it’s not a done deal. Judging from the number of contradicting stories, I’m guessing that a lot of frantic phone calls are being made right now.
When the casting was first announced, the series was in contention for a July broadcast on KBS. But then SBS claimed to have chosen Jealousy Incarnate for its August Wednesday-Thursday slot, following Deal (which comes after Entertainer). And THEN, KBS said it was scheduled for their Wednesday-Thursday timeslot in September, following Lightly, Ardently. Is Show two-timing, or do we have a bidding war on our hands?
The new drama comes from the writer of Miss Korea and Pasta, and stars Jo Jung-seok as a star news anchor with perfect specs who chases stories down with the persistence of a gangster. Gong Hyo-jin is a weathercaster on temporary contract with the station, a self-sufficient woman who’s strong and cute, but has no money or connections to speak of. The drama is about their lighthearted romance and fierce competition in the workplace, and about how jealousy ruins people. With this cast, it’s sure to be adorable.
Jealousy Incarnate will either be on SBS or KBS (MBC or tvN wanna jump in the ring while there’s a shot?) in August or September. Probably.

"a self-sufficient woman who’s strong and cute"
This description can fit any of Gong Hyo Jin role in any drama so far..
I really wish she try something outside her comfortable box..
Anyway, I'll look forward to watch this.. in whatever station that win the broadcast right.

Yes no matter what craps people like to say about her,she is an 'actress' and quite a chameleon when it comes to do justice to her role.I could not even come close to see that awful drama 'the greatest love',only if that awful male lead was absent, but she has not just done cheerful awkward quirky roles to be honest, there has been 'biscuit teacher and star candy' or 'let's go to school sang doo',or 'it's okay that's love' or the silently blissful 'thank you'.I am not much fan of the dramas 'pasta' or 'miss Korea' much,as \I found the writing a bit boring,or it must have been to do with my itch about lee sung kyung, but loved all other dramas of her except one or two of these. It just seems wrong to me that people would sneer at our preference based on the fact that she's at thirties age group.
Also another thing is,she 'is' adorably quirky and 'unique' herself,so she just brings out that personality of hers in her roles/characters.I think that also gives her characters an extra edge over what's least required.Anyway, would stop my rant over.

In those dramas she was earnest sweetheart heroine and probably why she is called Gongvely, right? It's must be because I'm biased but whenever I see similar characters I can't help but recall those and think that she was best. For example Oh My Ghostess , mix of Pasta and Master's Sun , Marriage Contract and Thank You...If there were a crossover IOTL - Ji Hae Soo could beat Good Doctor, and DOTS heroines in my opinion :D I think she is doing her best with was is given to her it can be more difficult to distinguish similar roles than portraying something completely different. Well I wouldn't know how actors see it but as viewers I enjoy watching her in rom-coms.

LMAO. MTE. For all the crap people talk here about certain actresses playing the same character over and over again, GHJ has basically played the manic pixie dream girl in every drama, to varying degrees of course, but the general sense of quirky, cool girl is always there.
Just like how JJH has made a career and been declared this amazing actress for basically playing the same cold, aloof character with a slightly spunky and sensitive side hidden underneath the spunk for fifteen years.
Can't help but rme at the over the top praise. People seem to have a nostalgia for actresses in their thirties, and some weird superiority complex, no matter how average they are or how long it took to get a good performance out of them.

personally, I can't help but rme at people throwing around buzzwords they don't seem to know the meanings of, to attempt to sum up the careers actresses they've only seen in a few dramas.
Because I'd really like to know how Gong Hyo-jin's roles in Producer, Ruler of Your Own World or It's Ok It's Love are the same as what she did in Master's Sun, Thank You, Best Love or Pasta.
And that's just the dramas, we're not even getting into her movie roles like Crush & Blush or Sisters on the Road. Or the upcoming movie where she's playing a child abductor.
As for Jeon Ji-hyun, she's played way more than just The Girl and Chun Song-yi. I'd really like to know how how the likes of her characters in Blood, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan or even The Berlin File can be considered 'cold, aloof character with a slightly spunky and sensitive side hidden underneath the spunk".

Well, I agree she's in a bit of a rut, but it's not nostalgia that makes people love her. It's her acting--even when she's in a subpar production playing a stock character, she breathes life into every scene.
Have you seen her best work? If you'd seen her in Ruler of Your Own World or Thank You, don't think you'd be able to dismiss her this easily. I mean, I don't get how you can dismiss her based on her lesser work either, but still.

I think most people here only seen her in dramas. She is one of the very few talented actresses who can successfully go back and forth between dramaland and Chungmuro. She has worked with the best in both worlds. Not every actor gets to work with the critical acclaim director Park Chan Wook or co-star with top actors like Ha Jung Woo.
The typical rom.com actoresses doesn't get this far.

My impression with her in dramas is that she chooses projects with interesting roles + solid scripts. And projects that don't just stick to all the kdramas rules but try something different (like her two most recent works, IOTL or Producers). But these kind of roles and projects are pretty hard to find.
I'm sure she'd love to get her teeth into a wider range of roles in dramas too but there isn't that much diversity (especially if I compare to Japanese dramas, where actresses like her have much better options), so she picks the good stuff and branches out into film for showcasing skills she can't – because of roles that don't exist – in kdrama.
tt
April 13, 2016 at 2:34 AM
@ alua, that is exactly what GHJ said she does :) People shouldn't say an actor/actress hasn't challenged oneself to act in different roles if they haven't watched all of their works.

idk, maybe the right offers aren't coming to her, and good dramas are pretty thin on the ground these days, but I think it's a stretch to call her latest spate of dramas challenging or interesting. I mean some of them could have gone somewhere--can't blame GHJ for trying Producers (how was she to know it would end up being the same old workplace rom com), and as far as IOIL, I only wish she could have worked with Noh Hee-kyung pre-2006 (that would have been amaaaazing)...I guess I'm being unfair. I'd just love to see her work with someone who's worthy of her talent, like Ahn Pan-seok for instance. Could be wrong but I think her style and his would work very well together--both are understated, naturalistic, detail-oriented, etc.
It's sad but I have to say that a lot of good actors/actresses these days just feel too good for dramas, GHJ being one of them.

@ juniper
I just wanted to correct you that Gong Hyo-jin has worked with Noh Hee-kyung pre-2006 in a 50-episode drama called, Wonderful Days (화려한 시절), in 2001. It starred Ji Sung and Park Sun-young as the leads with Ryu Seung-bum and Gong Hyo-jin receiving second billing.
Unfortunately, there is virtually no place to find subs let alone any raws of the show online that I could find, but there are clips on YouTube if you search 화려한 시절 as well some clips on the SBS website.
I do agree with you that Gong Hyo-jin's roles recently haven't been too challenging, especially in comparison to her performance in Ruler of Your Own World, but I also see that a good role for actresses these days are slim pickings which is too bad.
Fun fact: Ryu Seung-bum and Gong Hyo-jin actually started a long-term on-again/off-again relationship with each other after doing Wonderful Days.

<idk, maybe the right offers aren’t coming to her, and good dramas are pretty thin on the ground these days
That's what I was suggesting – good dramas are very thin on the ground. Instead, there's lots of fluff, lots of same-old, and some stuff with potential but that quickly falls apart in the narrative/writing. I tried to think of recent dramas (with age-appropriate roles) and I couldn't think of one that I would have expected GHJ to take on if she had been offered it. Oh My Venus? Madame Antoine? DoTs? Ms. Temper (role is okay but the drama as a whole isn't well-written enough)? One More Happy Ending? Bubblegum? She Was Pretty? Yong-pal? No no no (for different reasons each of course)...
<but I think it’s a stretch to call her latest spate of dramas challenging or interesting
I guess that depends on what you consider challenging/interesting. Producers was trying to pave new ways, it's just that the drama then caved to the audience that just wanted the same-old. Which was actually very watchable same-old – I did like both the docudrama and the regular workplace drama parts, even if I would have preferred that they had stuck with the docudrama because I think it was a worthwhile experiment.
IOTL I thought was interesting because it avoided a lot of every-drama-must-have-this (e.g. love triangle/love rivals), directly tackled several taboo issues (transgender, various mental health issues, domestic abuse) and portrayed a relationship between real adults. It had its flaws of course (weaknesses on some of the medical parts, the time-skip the magically resolved things in the final episode), but it was certainly doing stuff other dramas don't do. Maybe not that particular writer's best drama, but I still wish more dramas were like this.
<I’d just love to see her work with someone who’s worthy of her talent, like Ahn Pan-seok for instance.
Haven't seen any of this stuff (briefly tried Grapevine but wasn't in the mood for it, so saving it for another time), but sure, don't disagree here.
<It’s sad but I have to say that a lot of good actors/actresses these days just feel too good for dramas, GHJ being one of them.
Agreed. I think there's a lack of diversity in kdramas and roles, in a way that doesn't happen as much in Japanese dramas. Which is I think why you find a lot of the very good Japanese actors going back and forth between films and dramas, because you can find good projects for both, but in K-entertainment I think actors are much more limited in that sense. And the really good ones, unsurprisingly, once they make it in Chungmuro, often don't end up doing dramas anymore (or very very rarely). It seems though that GHJ still believes in doing kdramas and doesn't just want to stick to film, even though there's only so much to choose from on the small screen.

GHJ's character in "The Greatest Love" and "Master's Sun" (much less various films) were hardly "self-sufficient" or "strong."
Even her character in "The Producers" just tried to give off an impression that she was self-sufficient and strong - and that she was a tough cookie who had her act together, when in reality, she was full of self-doubts.

GHJ is the QUEEN of ROMCOMs, although many are starting to view Hwang Jung Eum as one too, which is so wrong. GHJ has done so many successful rom-coms, unlike HJE as she is more suitable for melos. She tends to overact and screeches in comedic roles.
I'm sure it's a war to get it cos the leads are IT actors. GHJ has always delivered in rom coms, and JJS proved that he has the comedic chops in Oh My Goddess. I'm so excited for this.

Each are at their own place, very much different from the other one,I don't see the need to announce a competition on who's more successful or who needs to be called the ultimate queen.I like both the actresses and I don't necessarily feel the need to judge who is beating whom. For example 'master's sun' is my one of my most favorite dramas,so HJE can not take gong's place and neither can gong hers. Also, have to say gong got to star in many drams which was written by critically acclaimed writers,so script took an upper hand here.We can't really judge an actor's success bar based on just their looks,or acting,or ratings.

I get that this is showbiz and eating disorders are common but for what it's worth, GHJ has always had that body type. She's also quite tall and long-limbed, which probably makes her look even slimmer than she otherwise would.
And given how open Korean celebrities tend to be about disordered eating and diets, if she'd been starving herself, we would have heard about it by now.

Ohhh. I was just thinking the other day, I need a Gong Hyo-jin drama! (And paired with Jo Jung-seok – me like!)
For the commenters that say she just playing "annoying-heroines-as-loveable".... I have never found any of her characters annoying (she didn't annoy me one bit in IOIL, which lots of people complained about), but real and relatable. I'll take her playing those roles of heroines that aren't doormats and candies every time, because there are 100 doormats and 100 candies to the characters that she plays. (Though I do think we're seeing a wee bit more backbone in female characters in general more recently.)

True, when I finally watched IOTL, I was a bit perplexed by all the complaints about the character. I sometimes don't know what people want on here. They don't want the bubbly, smiley character but anything besides bubbly and smiley gets a string of complaints even with a competent actress. I'm all good with bubbly and smiley or bad personalities, flaws, and quirks as long as there is life in that character and Gong Hyo Jin can certainly do that.

I really don't understand why one actress has to be raised at the expense of another. Honestly, the drama world is large enough to sustain more than one actress who can wear the same title. Why do people think it is necessary to malign one to raise up another? It doesn't need to be that way...? I can like HJE and GHJ without compromising myself (I hope, hah). And I can like GHJ and say PSH without needing to throwing shade at one or the other. Doing anything else is kind of hypocritical...I feel. But you're, of course, free to disagree with me.

Is there a rule that specifies that we can't talk about other actresses in our posts? Other people can talk about another actress so What gives?? Or unless I can only say good things and nothing negative? The reason I brought it up because it's a discussion on actresses in romcoms. I was commenting about her acting, not personal attacks.....

Well, the article wasn't a discussion on actresses in romcoms. From what I see, your own comment (a Level 1 comment) was the one that began a discussion of actresses in romcoms.
You are free to talk about whatever you like in your comments, but others are bound to find it strange if you bring up other names randomly just for the sake of criticising them to make your preferred actor/actress look better.
Gong Hyo-jin [or insert any other name of preference] doesn't become a better actress because you've just dissed someone else (who has nothing to do with this drama or article). She's good by her own merit, not because either might or might not be terrible.

In case that wasn't clear, last comment for @Juliesean and "either" should be "others".

@Juliesean,of course you can talk freely, like you I also think highly of GHJ,just that maybe like us people have HJE as their bias hehe..cheers.
Off topic, always wanted to watch 'sisters on the run'.Is it any good?My first watch on GHJ was 'crush and blush'.. her awkward red cheeks, and her weird antics and obsession with the teacher totally caught me off guard lol,but could not stop watching it.Only thing that kept me hooked was probably her gorgeous black hair, oddly. But then later on I saw 'master's sun',and all the others one by one.Have to say, though a regular rom-com,but master's sun had so many hilariously scary moments, not to forget tae gong shil and her desperate need to grab sjs's hands lol.

I don't know why some said she is doing same role again n again? I know she has been doing lot of romcoms (she earned Queen of Rom Com), but I dont mind..She, same like Jang Na Ra can do same role over n over again, and they are naturally capable enough to make those roles believable & loveable, instead of annoying.
let's accept that not every actor can be versatile and can do all genre. Anyway, GHJ can do melodrama too..

I think JNR's range is limited simply because she's so baby-faced. Even if she could pull it off with her acting, I doubt producers will be inclined to cast her in something which doesn't align with what she normally does. She's burdened with the lack of options. With GHJ, she can totally try out a variety of different roles. Not that I'm complaining though.

SBS basically handed over the biggest hit of the year (DoTS) to KBS. Now they want Jealousy Incarnate and KBS is not going to let go.
My guess is that if Jeon Chang-Geun is going to direct this then KBS will win. He has only direct dramas for KBS. The writer hasn't done a drama for SBS either.

I'm having so much fun picturing KBS and SBS as two kindergarteners fighting over the same shiny toy (this drama) going 'It's mine!' 'No, it's MINE!' 'No, I saw it first!'

Jeon Chang Geun left KBS a month ago, hence all this confusion. The drama doesn't have a director right now.

I agree with you. People love her but she feels exactly the same in all her roles. Even when the characters are supposed to be different it just feels like the same character with a different name and situation. And she always feels so boring and bleh. I never understood the love for her.

People who love her include knetz sure almost of them say because she can act. They maybe never understand you either.

Lee Young Shin
Seo Yoo Kyung
Gu Ae Jung
Tae Gong Shil
Ji Hae So
Tak Ye Jin
Maybe they also think how in the earth there are some people who can't differentiate all those characters .. Not to mention her characters on the movie like Crush and Blush..
But thats okay since everyone can make opinion.. But yes 'people' or the majority that you mention sure also have another reasons why they love her..

I don't care where it ends up, as long as it's on my screen at some point with these two as the leads. I love them both to death. I was getting worried when I didn't hear any follow-up about the project so I'm glad to see that they are confirmed, even if a station isn't. Lol, and I suppose it's good to see it being fought over rather than trying to find a broadcaster :)

I do hope that KBS2 nabs this away from SBS. I have nothing against SBS, but I just think that KBS2 is a more flexible and compatible broadcast station for the drama. Less product placements and more leniency for production creativity. Plus, I do think that it is KBS2's year to dominate this 2016 after their fairly recent 2014-15 slumps from drama pickups. The only downside is that if this airs in KBS2, it would probably be under the radar as Descendants of the Sun will probably sweep awards in mini-series categories.
Descendants of the Sun
Uncontrollably Fond
My Lawyer, Mr. Jo
Hwarang: The Beginning
Moonlight Drawn by the Clouds
And if ever, Jealousy Incarnate...
Such a great year for KBS2 while SBS is struggling with just few anticipated hits (Scarlet: Ryeo, Saimdang: Her Story, Doctors) and MBC still continuing it's so-so success (Lucky Romance, W). I guess that's why SBS is trying to be more competitive than ever, too.

I don't know where this 'meh' reaction to GHJ has come from. (I thought everyone loved her lol). I disagree that she's just doing the same roles over and over, especially if you consider her movie roles I think she's quite versatile. She's an incredibly natural actress imo.
This pairing is so delightful and the Miss Korea writer is wonderful. I don't care what network it airs on, as long it airs with this cast and the writer's original vision intact, I'm cool.

I also don't agree that Gong Hyojin always plays the same roles, but I do recognize that to an extent she plays them the same way. But to be perfectly honest, I don't care-- I like what she's giving and I never get tired of it. She makes her characters feel human and her way of portraying characters has become her trademark. I don't think any other actress gives off the same air as her and it sets her apart.

This. There's a huge difference between having a particular style of acting across your career, and not being able to understand different roles and characters. Sure, GHJ probably wouldn't go over so well in high drama like a sageuk (could be why she hasn't done one), but she's perfect in modern dramas and I don't see how or why she should change. She's one of the most natural actresses I've seen--like you said, she takes all her characters to a place where they feel real and human. That takes a ton of skill.

I hope KBS will win over this battle. SSOMEHOW I found SBS adds too much 'drama' in it until it feels sooo jumpy and unrealistic. However, Gentleman's dignity proved me wrong, but these days I found some sbs dramas are quiet annoying and I love the casts and the writer. Pasta was my favorite drama, and Jo jeong seok oh my...
I secretly hope KBS will win this battle haha

Honestly, i have felt the same way some people do about GHJ's style of acting. When i first saw her on Best Love, i absolutely disliked her character; Aejung. Aejung was such a lack-lustre and draining character. I couldnt root for her character at all. This is the general feeling that i had about GHJ. I had the same opinion about her as an actress when i watched Biscuit Teacher Star Candy. When GHJ was on Master's Sun, i did not like her portrayal of Tae Gong Shil too....UNTIL that one ep where she was possessed by the spirit of the pianist's wife. Ooo~~ the way she portrayed that cold, regal character ❤ and her smirk totally gave me life. And seeing her be 'possessed' by Heejoo (Joongwon's dead love) was a turning point for me. From then on, i started seeing her in a different light. IOIL totally threw me on board the GHJ ship and sealed the deal for me. I just love Hae Soo and she tops my list of favourite fiesty kdrama female leads.
With all that is said, i can't wait to see GHJ back in dramaland again. And with Mr.Hotdog World; such an intriguing pairing ❤
