Oh Snap! Jo Jin-woong is maybe the best thing ever

There’s just something magnetic about Jo Jin-woong, who’s always been able to captivate audiences no matter how big or small the part. I’ll never forget my first exposure to him in Chuno, where he played a loyal warrior with the heart of a lion, or his absolutely insane storyline in the makjang-to-rule-them-all Flames of Ambition, or his unforgettable performance as Joseon’s greatest swordsman in Tree With Deep Roots.

All those dramas netted him acclaim for his stellar acting chops, but it wasn’t until Signal that he really gained widespread and more mainstream appeal, which was one of the topics discussed in the accompanying interview for this month’s featured spread in 1st Look.

Always humble and good-humored, the actor also discussed the changes in his weight. Since he finds dieting quite painful, he’s not so focused on his looks, and tries to do what best suits the characters he plays. He has plenty of admiration for those actors who do make it their job to maintain their figures, but he’s just as okay not being one of them. I think we all are too.

Signal just pretty much ruined me for dramaland for the entire year unless something unexpectedly spectacular comes along. What sharp, incisive storytelling.

I haven't seen SFD (I haven't been able to get into saeguks at all till now, though I'm planning to change that with Scarlet Heart: Ryeo, because IU impressed me so much as Producer's Cindy that I'm willing to check her out in anything she does, although I can't imagine the drama will be anything of even a fraction of the quality that it seems SFD was), but it's impressive that people are still praising it so much after its run. Usually dramas tend to lose steam halfway through, and I'm sure it's even harder for a long-running drama to retain interest throughout, so it seems SFD really must have done something very, very right. Especially if it even stands comparison to Signal, that's absolutely amazing.

I agree. I thought Reply 1988 was on the brink of being spectacular, but it sort of couldn't capitalize on it fully by the end. I didn't care much about the shipping in the drama, so that wasn't what made me feel it, but something about the narrative itself lost steam eventually.

Cheese In The Trap too, if it had progressed till the end in the same way as it did in episodes 1-6, could have been a masterpiece. Like, they probably wouldn't have been Signal-level, because they're nowhere near as intricate even at their best, and Signal has the advantage of being a thriller/mystery which is conducive to retaining interest, but they could have been triumphs for their genre.

Yeah Signal and Six Flying Dragons ruined me. I wish they got even more attention though. I still have friends saying things like 'argh Korean dramas and their cheesy romance'. People still have a certain stereotype for Korean dramas (because the ones that get really popular are always the same type), but they don't realise there are a lot of hidden gems.

I agree! I mean, I really enjoy the typical k-dramas as well, and I'm all up for a good romance, that was what got me into k-dramas in the first place. But that's not to say it's all they can do. I think dramas like Misaeng and Signal can compete with any international TV offering because of how well-written and directed they are. I always try to get people who wouldn't normally be interested in romantic k-dramas with dramas like White Christmas. There's a lot of good stuff for anyone who's interested in great narratives.

I love this guy. I have to say his weight loss looks really great in a normal aspect ratio--I was a little worried about him in Signal but he's looking very healthy here. I thought he was very cute when he was chubby, but I'm coming around <3

So glad his work in Flames of Ambition got a mention. He made me cry like a baby in that.

He looks better with weight on because he is tall or maybe because we are so used to him being chubby.

He is one of those actors that loves acting. It doesn't matter how small a role he is given. He gives it everything he has and I love him even more for that.

I thought he was cute when he was chubby too as I find chubby guys attractive. His weight loss makes him look very healthy though and not grumpily emaciated. He is one of those actors who elevates everything he's in. His role as a villain in A Hard Day is a must see. He is very sexy! I recently started watching A Man Called God but quickly gave it up as terminally stupid. He plays a spoiled rich boy in that and I almost kept viewing just for his hairstyle alone. He looks like he is wearing several meringues on his head. It's hilarious.

lol A Man Called God was an awful drama full of awful hairdos. I do think the first episode is the funniest thing ever (for all the wrong reasons), but it's very hard to sit through, I agree.

He is very sexy, I agree! I think part of it is his voice. And he brings a lot of intensity to his roles--a lot of very conventionally better looking actors are like potted plants, pretty but just sort of there, but whenever JJW is on screen you can't take your eyes off him.

Hes so adorbs in these pictures - especially the 4th one :D

sigh, I haven't been able to stick with any of the newer series after Signal. After all the goosebumps and heart racing, everything seems just "meh" to me now. Its a disease.

"Floored" is the word I was looking for! Thanks...

I've been completely utterly floored by this performance in "Signal." Heck, I'm only on episode 7 right now, but like someone above said, I can't take my eyes off the screen when he's on. The performances on that show are ALL like that, though.. And I believe 100% in his delivery of Lee Jae-Han; he's utterly convincing as that earnest, dogged/determined, down-to-earth, regretful/torn, heartbroken cop.

"Chuno" and "Tree With Deep Roots" was always on my viewing list, but now that I know he's in both, I'm definitely gonna move them forward.

Cos of his somewhat-ahjusshi looks, he might not be given the lead roles, esp. in rom-coms, but I really really really really wish that would change. For his sake. For our sake. Ok, for my sake.. From these pictures, it seems like he'd be pretty good too in a light-hearted, comic role. I loved loved loved how smitten and puppy-ish he was in "Signal" with his office worker crush. He absolutely killed the I'll-worship-you-to-the-heavens-and-lick-your-feet kind of adoration that others have tried and only looked ridiculous in executing.

Lurrve him! I've seen him in a lot over the years and he's always typecasted as the gangster, detective or warrior but it wasn't until Full Sun (aka Beyond the Clouds??) that I began crushing on him hard. His tough outwardly persona mixed with an insecure yet adorably bumbling personality made me fall for him. I even liked his chemistry with Kim Yoo Ri and I have to admit that I came back to this drama week after week for him, rather than the star, Yoon Kye Sang. That's why when I saw Kim Hye Soo giving that swoony expression in Signal, I could totally relate to her character. Haha.

He's probably one of my very, very few ahjussi crushes. Can't count the number of times he made me teary-eyed in Signal. I was crying so hard at his cinema scene that I couldn't go on watching. Signal is one of the few dramas that are so good but I can't marathon at one go because it's too emotional.

Hope he continues to get meaty roles like Lee Jae-han in Signal. I wouldn't want to see him get his talent wasted acting in small supporting roles.

But imagine if it was a woman who said " I do not care about dieting I am fine the way I am"

Let's see how many roles she would get. Because Main, second etc are all slender women. If a woman was what I would consider average she would get a lot of fat comments or get a background role.

Signal was my first exposure to Jo Jin-woong, and I loved him! But after watching him as the glorious and incorruptible Jae-han, I felt wronged and throughly creeped out when I happened to watch Salut d'Amour and he was an almost boorish man with a younger woman hanging off of him. It's good to know most of his roles are more Jae-han-like than not!

(I also happened to [start] watching Coin Locker Girl while Signal was airing. HA! Talk about transformation! But while jarring at first, the differences in Kim Hye-soo's performance were more amusing than disheartening.)

Also, are those supposed to be unisex bags? Because I want all of them!

Like the other beanies here, Signal raised the bar for me too. I didn't even get on the DotS bandwagon and until now am still not convinced I should start marathon-watching it. Sigh. I don't know if Signal giving me higher expectations for future dramas is good or bad, cos they're a dime a dozen
