[Theme of the Month] Our relationship to music and dramas
by javabeans
Music is this month’s theme! More specifically:
What is your relationship with music and dramas?
It’s a broad topic, but one that we wanted to leave somewhat open because there are so many ways in which music and dramas intersect, and how we as viewers relate to that.
Maybe one reader will love all musical-themed dramas under the sun (see: Dream High, Shut Up: Flower Boy Band). Maybe another will be enamored of a particular type of background score, or OST ballad. Someone else may have a different relationship entirely.
What we aren’t asking is for you to only talk about your favorite music in a drama, or your favorite drama about music. We want to hear about how music and dramas intersect, and how that affects your viewing experience. (Of course, feel free to talk about your favorite OSTs and dramas about music! We’re just not restricting the topic to those areas.)
To submit:
- Email your submissions to [email protected]. If you have a registered Dramabeans account, include your handle so we can link to it.
- Include at least 1 image, though more is preferred.
- Suggested length: Between 500 and 1,000 words.
- Deadline: We will post these on a rolling basis, so we’re taking submissions now. We will cut off accepting submissions on September 25. If you miss this month, join us for a new theme in October!
(Tip: Please name your documents and attachments something other than “Theme of the month” or “Dramabeans,” please! Submissions can be hard to track if they’re all named the same thing.)

I've never watched Boys Over Flowers but I won't be surprised if someone wrote about Almost Paradise. Or Love is The Moment for The Heirs. Basically the annoying over-used OST.

For me it's "hello you shiny boy," (or something like that.) I wanted to share my love of K-Drama with my youngest son when he was home on a college break. I'd forgotten how inane that song was. (Especially when the music was so awesome in the first few episodes.) I still start my messages to him, "hello you shiny boy" occasionally. We laugh.

Forgot to mention the drama was "City Hunter." (I know it's not necessary for most beanies, but maybe there are some who can't make the shiny/Hunter connection.)

BOF was my very first KDrama but I forgot the OSTs, until I searched them up and it was immediate recollection...thanks to Lucky and I'll be waiting for you. One OST I'll never mind though is Fated To Love You's title song. That thing is catchy in a good way!

Nah. Watching BOF (my second drama) got me to look up cast members on Google. From there, I followed links to YouTube music videos for SS501, which sent me down the K-pop YouTube rabbit hole. I haven't really come out of said rabbit hole except to watch more dramas. Niw I can't remember the last time I've listened to music in my own language (English).

Oh, I did the same thing. The first kdrama I watched was Secret Garden and I loved the music in that show so much I started looking for it on Youtube. Now 3 years later my iTunes playlists are all Shinee, TVXQ, Jungigo, Sandeul and so on. I tell people I'm listening to my version of opera because I don't know what they are singing but I feel it all. I haven't listened to english music since. Lately I've wandered into Japanese pop and African pop.
Who knows I might even try and write an essay about my love of kPop and dramas for this month.

music is the aspect that reaches cell level for me. when usually I don´t cry and only get annoyed at melodramatic things, I am helpless when there is music that manages to move me. how to say, it knows my acupressure points.

and it is also the thing that haunts me longest, even longer than any swoony scene can ever do. Sometimes I get obsessed with a song - it was really really bad with the 38 Police Unit themes Run and Cool, they were both my ringtones and I annoyed the hell out of people by playing them every chance I got. I even called myself to make my phone ring, LOL. Before that, I remember Jang Geun Suk´s What should I do? haunting me about 2 months, I even made estonian lyrics for it.
I have the tendency to spontaniously burst into a song on the street and when I get home after work, sometimes when it is a drama song that pops out I just go "Ba-babaa!" not knowing the lyrics. and of course, whenever the theme song starts playing all the emotions from the time of watching the drama come back.

I think that's the best part, when hearing the songs makes you get all the feels you had for the show, what was going on in your life as you watched, sometimes I even get reminded of the season when the show was on.

In general music tells the same story with different means in best case but worst case it turns the drama into a Joke. My favorite soundtrack + story symbiosis is I Remember You where the music seemed to be an organic part of the events, not even "background".

I love collecting drama OSTs. Even the dramas that I have not seen but heard good things about the OST like Jealousy Incarnate and Cheese in the Trap. So good.
I have so many but my most memorable ones and my faves are from Coffee Prince (including all the unofficial songs), MDBC, Goblin, Pinocchio, and W.
Coffee Prince OST is chill. The kind I like to listen to on a drive or a rainy day. It is even better when I remember scenes from the drama with each song.
Since my drama slump, my playlist has been Goblin OST. More than the songs, the instrumentals are really good. Same with W. A+ work of music director. MDBC theme never fails to give me feels. Gummy is amazing!
I have so much more. Hehe! I am excited to see the submissions of fellow beanies and have a music-centric discussions!

We've learned in the field of Alzheimers that the last thing people forget is music.
I'm afraid now when I'm older and living with dementia the only songs I'll remember are the Korean pop songs and the caregivers won't have a clue what to do with me!
then I'll have to tell them about Secret Garden and Twenty Again, Cheese in the Trap and they will really think I'm more nuts than I'll be! haha

I love this new theme of the month ? !
Recently, I fell hard for Falsify OST , in particular the first use of it in the drama (the scene, the feelings) , I love it so much that it took me almost 20eps to realize there was only one song used so far as OST, which is so unusual in dramaland ?.
As usual, my schedule is quite full, I don't know if I'll find the time to write about this theme, one thing for sure : I can't wait to read Beanies relationship to music & dramas ?, and get to know more OST and dramas ?.

It's always nice when a great drama has a great OST -- I mean the score, not just the songs. Some of my favorites are Drinking Solo, which is jazz~ I even got my no-to-kdrama officemate addicted to it, lol; and The Innocent Man, which almost made me buy a violin just so I can learn to play the music.
But my most recent favorite (as in since January, lol) is still Weightlifting Fairy's. I like how the instruments in the scores symbolized the different sides of Bok-joo: the electric guitar in her theme song screams swag; the piano/xylophone-ish tunes for her girly/shy/insecure side; the big drums in the score 3 Ugly People really feel like her, Nan-hee and Seon-ok bouncing around; even the cello was beautiful, to me it sounds like longing, or like the gap between Bokjoo's real self and the ideal version she initially wants herself to be. Gah. The first instrumental score on the soundtrack I think is called Clear, and every time I listen to it I just feel like tomorrow is going to be better than today... Not a lot, but a little better.

Music is one of those things that I oftentimes find extremely unnecessary in dramas. Not a music lover but there are OSTs that I remember fondly. It's ok, It's Love had some of the best songs. I don't have to write a full article on this.
Mostly my love for music is directly proportional to my love for the show.
Latest example is the best hit, I really liked the song Beautiful Beautiful because it was upbeat & light but also because it was the theme song of the leads.
Other examples include Master's Sun, My Girlfriend is a Gumiho. I guess the plot helps me to enjoy the music more.
And there are few other times when a music of a drama that I haven't seen or don't like appeals to me. And I've never really liked a complete ost of any drama ever.
Finished.

I don't think kdrama would have hooked me nearly as hard without the OSTs, for me they are comparable to good movie scores and I love them. The only thing I listen to in the car is kdrama soundtracks.

See there's a lot one could cover in this; the pesky background scores which aren't part of the OST but are really good and get stuck in your head), the background pop songs that feature your favourite artists or introduce you to new artists, mis timed music cues, interruption of score for the OST *smh*, that intensely catchy theme tune that hooks you every episode, and gets you into obscure Korean indie jazz rock bands (JANNABI! I'm looking at you!), well timed music cues! in scenes made 10X more beautiful because of the OST, music that brings Nostalgia...
Looking forward to reading everyone's posts and MAYBE maybe submitting idk.

Beside the chemistry between characters, I think the OSTs was one factor which kept me enjoying the sloppily writen Heartstring. All of them is good song and I appreciate it even more as they cast real musicians (Jung Yonghwa and Kang Minhyuk) for the characters who do music. It brings the sense of realism to higher degree.
It is something that hardly presents when the drama cast actor who only learns before filming or who never actually experiences real stage performance. Not even Joo Won and Shim Eunkyung (in Tomorrow's Cantabile) makes it believable enough.
Different story with Nodame Cantabile, though. Tamaki Hiroshi's acting is too strong that it overshadows the mismatch hand-synching for piano/violin scenes. He even gets praised from the actual conductor when it comes to conducting scenes, proving how great he is at recreating. But it has to be noted that he is musician & singer irl too. Of course his musical sense be a great help to the acting.

I forgot Kill Me, Heal Me, where every theme was like the heartbeat of the character it represented, especially Shin Se Gi´s flamboyant tune Freak. It is a drama that could be developed into a musical or a ballet on stage. I am imagine a song called "Oppa!" by Ahn Yo Na, "Remember..." by Shin Se Gi... ah, but poor actor who has to do everything though. Another drama that I think would transfer excellently into a musical is Oh My Ghostess. Emotional side covered by the ghost, cute side by Bong-Sun. and think of the evil ghost having a song!

I think my favourite use of ost would be the death song in Moon Lovers. I love how they use that song to accompany the death scenes, and how not every character deaths get the privilege to have that song play lol which i guess gives us an insight of how we should be looking at the characters. Its like an added aspect to interpret the characters, the scenes and the plot..

Maybe because Sassy Girl Chun Hyang drama is my most fav. romcom, I really love that OST by Lim Hyung Joo - Haeng Bok Ha Gil Ba Rae. I still listening to that song until today even I watched that drama like 10 years ago.
Other than that, I love Gumiho OST- Fox Rain because it has=s really unique sound and never I pay attention to the BGM until I watched Mirror of the Witch. The soundtrack during the Saeron's transformation using Korean traditional instruments is really creepy and amazing. I'm watching Save Me nowadays and the drumming part for intense BGM remind me of Mirror of the Witch sound.

Ohhhhhh! Perfect theme! So vital to completing the "feels" of a drama! Of course, it's a full circle … the acting, direction, and script must be in sync for the true magic to happen.
However, that doesn't mean that a drama that goes awry could still hold its own with the OST … ? ? ? Can't wait for the chosen article!

One of my earliest obsession with OSTs was with the Spring Waltz OST, even more so than that of Winter Sonata, in fact.
And I have a particular fondness for when the Leads sing for the OST.

I was going through YouTube and saw a full playlist of the OST for On the Way to the Airport. Gave it a listen after a very long time and now the songs are on repeat. I can't really pick a favourite because I love all songs equally.
I now remember why I love the OST so much. They're very calming and soothing. I can picture myself going for a drive a night while enjoying the night breeze and listening to these lovely tunes.
I really wanna do that right now except that it's almost midnight. Don't think I'll be able to feel calm driving alone at this hour ?
