MBC courts Yoo Seung-ho to headline drama I Am Love

Woohoo, Yoo Seung-ho (Ruler–Master of the Mask) is already looking at new drama projects, and is in talks to possibly headline one titled I Am Love for MBC. It’s great to hear, in that I love Yoo Seung-ho and was just about to say that I’d watch anything he’s in, except that’s a lie because I realize that while I have started everything he’s in, I’ve quit a bunch of them. Maybe the more accurate statement would be that I love Yoo Seung-ho so much that I have sat through a lot of bad dramas in order to see him (before then being forced to stop because of the badness). Somehow I mean this as a compliment!

I Am Love centers around a man who has nobody to lean on, neither parents nor lover, and the story that unfolds when he meets and falls in love with a woman. Yoo Seung-ho is up to play Kang Chan, a young man with genius-level drawing abilities who has had to resort to using his skills to make forgeries. As a child, he was adopted to the U.S. but was then rejected twice by his adoptive families. He suffered abuse, and was deported after getting caught up in a drug trafficking incident. Now he lives in Jeju, spending his days at an out-of-the-way monastery as a priest, and working as a forger at night. That is certainly a colorful description.

The drama comes from PD Choi Won-seok, whose prior credits include mid-2000s dramas like Firebird, Queen of the Game, and Bad Love, as well as 2011’s Miss Ripley. Sigh, okay, so he’s a hardcore melo dude. (Why, Yoo Seung-ho, why?) I couldn’t watch Queen of the Game (subpar revenge thriller) or Bad Love (makjang romance melo), but I did find Miss Ripley an engaging and relatively easy watch, and PD Choi has also worked on the daily drama Oh Ja-ryong Is Coming, which I recall being popular. If we’re looking for silver linings!

I Am Love does not yet have a timeslot or an airdate, but is being considered by MBC for a launch in the first half of next year.

Same - I like him but his dramas? Not so much. I hope this turns out well though. Forgeries make the premise sound interesting and different.

That's so true I really hope for this drama they can cast someone that can actually have chemistry with yoo seung ho not that he didn't with Kim so hyun but with the writing of their characters it was hard to see

They had so much chemistry but the writing really wasted that beautiful chemistry.

I see Seung Ho crying his way through 70% of this drama as well. Don't his tear glands ever protest! Why must you pick these projects boy!

It got really awkward and uncomfortable for them and the viewers. I've never seen good actors so lost, struggling to make sense out of a messy script.

I've seen better from Kim So-hyun when there is actually something coherent for her to work with.
I wouldn't mind seeing them work together in a couple years.

Yoo Seung-ho seems to be doing a lot melodrama that I just want to see him in a normal romcom where he just act as a puppy who has a crush with a noona. I liked his acting in Ruler despite of the mess, so if he accepts this drama, I hope he will be paired with a good actress. I do remember I watched (and maybe enjoyed) some of this PD drama, but like you said he is hardcore melo dude. lol. If YSH can improve from his acting in Ruler, it will be good!

Agh same! Enough with the tragedy already, I can't see YSH cry in literally every drama he's in. Is it too much to ask for him to do a rom-com??

Even if it is not a romcom, there are still other drama which he can cry less. Maybe act as a rookie prosecutor or cop will be a nice change and him bickering with his sunbaes or colleagues will be something great to watch!

Best introductory paragraph, ever!

I was so excited to read about this new project, then disappointment slowly starts to seep in with descriptors like "genius", "abuse", "drug trafficking" and priest by day and forger by night (wait, what?) Why can't a drama titled I Am Love be a charming little rom-com? I just want Yoo Seung-ho not to shed so many sorrowful tears again despite how insanely pretty he is when doing so!

I kind of don't want him to take it because I really want YSH's characters to be happy, I swear if I have to watch him shed tears one more time..

Any chance that's it's going to be a bit funny and a little bit extra? Like how Lookout had a serious plot but it wasn't absolutely heavy?

The plot sounds like it was a drama from the mid 2000s where everything is a tragedy.

I like YSH but I guess, I also need to know who would be his partner because this kind of drama need to have a give and take.

You have to admit, you don't often see the words "drug trafficking", "priest" and "forger" in the description for the main lead.

This could be very interesting.

I also love Yoo Seung-ho and wish he would choose better dramas by acclaimed writer/directors, so his talent doesn't go to waste. Does he not research dramas by these writers/directors and think, "Hmm..that was a hot mess..pass."?

That was the best description of what it's like to be a fan of Yoo Seungho. You love him. You want to watch everything he's in...but sometimes it is easier said than done lol (Reminds me of how I sat through Daebak just for Yeo Jingoo. Oh the torture!) What wouldn't we go through for our favs?

The sadder thing is, when our non favs are in a drama that we are interested to watch, and at the same time our favs are starring in less interesting drama. This is the real torture. lol.

I enjoyed melodrama as much as I love romantic comedy shows. This should be suited to Yoo Seung Ho since he had some experiences carrying tragic role like he did in I Miss You, even a child role like Sad Love Story.

Whatever he decides to do, please no melodramas and no crying scenes. Jebal! Please God. Amen.

Pre-army Yoo Seung ho could do no wrong in my eyes, I loved everything he did, everything he starred in. But his post-army dramas have slowly and surely eroded my love for his acting, and it's all due to his excessive crying scenes and the terrible plots for the dramas he chose to star in.

It's ironic that Remember made me fall completely in love with Namgoong min, where I only liked him before; but made me grow a little tired of YSH; and I couldn't even finish Ruler - Master of the Mask. He's a good example of why drama choices are so important.

I still dislike Yoo Seung Ho after Remember, he was crying in 70% of first 4 episodes (that's where I dropped it). And in other 30% he had this tragic smile.
To make it fair, it's not fully his fault, in fact his crying scenes worked for me for first 2 times

I've watched Yoo Seung Ho in The Way Home and that's the only show where I like him. The next drama I watched him was Remember and then Ruler, I dropped both.

His acting is fine if you watch him for just an episode or two. Before long, it starts to get repetitive. He's one of those actors who I find uses stock expressions a lot. Happy, angry, sad, worried...all have their individual fixed expressions.

There are other actors with whom I have the same problem but I know that mine is not a popular opinion. Majority of viewers laud these actors for great acting skills.

Melodrama is the worst genre for this type of actors. Throw in a PD who has a melo bent, I can imagine how it's going to look like.

Whatever I think, I bet his drama will get good ratings. This guy is a hit magnet.

Why did you drop Remember?

I know I hated a movie he was in, I think it was about 'solving a crime in highschool' or something, I really don't know why exactly I disliked it. But that is because everyone said he was a good actor, so now I want to watch Remember the war of the son, but yeah...maybe a drama of his will change my opinion of him, that his dramas are finish-able...lol...'finishable' is not a word!!!

I dropped Remember because it was poorly written and directed and I will always remember YSH's crying face in it.

I didn't give up and tried Ruler because I thought the synopsis was very promising. It didn't seem to be an outright melo either. Well, YSH didn't cry that much in this one but the show was dumb. Written by terrible writers and even worse PD.

He's young so I think there's plenty of time for him to change and improve. In his case, I'd rather he throw out all those cliche acting styles learnt over the years and start anew. Act with rawness and from the heart. I think having a good PD will do wonders. Unfortunately he got some stick in the mud types in his recent dramas.

Thanks for your reasoning on Remember, he did look good there though so I am easily swayed.

I have yet to see Ruler. I didn't even think of trying that. But I think I have to watch something with YSH to the end before I try something new aired every week.

i want him back but not in a tragic melo again...he has such an amazing and expressive actor but bad scripts choises let him down

i mean, cant he consider projects from other channel too like jtbc or ocn?
and for me, melo does not mean tears for 70% of drama. inner monologue can also give the melo feels.

Silver linings: this will be set (hopefully a good part) in Jeju! And priest-forger does sound colourful and potentially interesting.

I skipped Ruler so have no idea how much he cried, but if I want to see him smile I watch Imaginary Cat. And imagine I'm Bok Gil.

Just had to comment re drama's synopsis: Why do writers make it seem so easy to un-adopt a child? It would take a lot for the adoptive parents to be allowed to rescind the adoption. Once you're adopted in the USA, you're granted citizenship after 2 yrs. So, for him to be un-adopted twice, the time span couldn't be more than 4 yrs. Assuming he went to the States as a child, he'd still be a child when arrested. No way would he be deported that young back to a place with no relatives. Just my thought...am I wrong to think that?

i really love him but he really picks bad projects and thank god for Ruler's rating success. I hope he wont be paired with young girls again becoz they really arent at liberty to romance which isnt helping him. Hoping for good actress, maybe Park Shin Hye. They said they want to star in drama together. Hope that wish comes true soon when they are all single and young.

I guess I love Yoo Seung-ho a bit more than you then Javabeans because I've practically watched him in anything and everything despite bad scripts.

Also, I enjoy melodrama waaay more than I'm ready to admit. Something about bringing heartbreak and then healing that heartbreak makes me really happy - no matter how sadistic that sounds.

The character description is actually quite unique and interesting so I'm excited if he signs on. Also, I want Park Bo-young. Now that would be adorable beyond words. I want her to do Melo and they can still make me cry like a baby.

Wow another after ruler I loved his chemistry in ruler I like him for his wowing or should I say his really good actor . is nice he has a drama like this I would to see him in a drama or romcom where he won't cry a lot his cries make me wow sad yeah they are heart thriving

I would like it very much if he is paired with Kim so hyun again they had a really good chemistry
They cared for each other even in the bts they were always jolly together so I think for this drama if they are together it will be really nice to see them again in another drama it would be really cool .
Congratulations YSH ruler was a hit to me . I loved it hope to see more of your works in future

I agree, I like YSH but all his new projects were just bad, I haven’t watched any. That being said, this vague synopsis sounds interesting because the male lead’s description is not your typical kdrama hero. However I hope they remove the childhood adoption which sounds ridiculous. I hope this time YSH can be edgy. Also I don’t see why he would be a priest, that part is weird. I’m thinking maybe he will be a fake priest (a disguise for his forgery?).

Anyways it is still too early to judge the story, since we don’t even have a description of the heroine yet. This could, if done right, actually be interesting and fresh for a kdrama. It will all depend on the writer, if the writer is bad than this drama will be doomed to be silly makjang. However if the writer is good, this could be an intense, nuanced, and even a heartfelt romance/drama, maybe with a redemption arc for the male lead.

I hope it will be a great project for him. His last drama left a bitter taste in my mouth so I can relate wholeheartedly.
I would like to see him in a drama that I would want to watch from start to finish too.
How does a show with the title I Am Love not be a romcom? Melos are just not my thing right now. If it is good, I will check it out. Maybe.

Seung Ho needs a good love story to show that he can be a leading man able to pull off chemistry with his co - stars, otherwise he'll get stuck on his roles, just like what happened to Lee Jun Ki (good actor - no chemistry whatsoever with his leading ladies , besides in ML:SH). IMO, this seems like a good plot to push his romantic side. Just hope the leading lady is one who he can finally have good chemistry with.
