Drama viewership ratings for the week of Sept. 4-10, 2017
by HeadsNo2
Falsify saw the highest numbers it’s seen since it first began premiering, though it still hasn’t managed to beat its own record of 12.6%. And while new limited series Argon is premiering the same days but in a different time slot, the shows don’t sound all that dissimilar, with both tackling what goes on in the newsroom. For its part though, Argon is already pulling in decent-ish numbers, but it remains to be seen if tvN can successfully resuscitate a time slot that once pulled in gold.
Over in the middle of the week, Hospital Ship set a new record for itself at 13.0%, which now seems to fit with all the hype. Whether it’ll be able to sustain it or not is up in the air, but the competition is admittedly weak—Manhole may as well be premiering in a manhole at this point, and Reunited Worlds seems comfortable hovering below the 7% marker.
I’ll be interested to know if SBS keeps its double slot on Saturdays now, since Sister Is Alive is the network’s second foray into a time slot without competition (for the second half). It amazes me each week that the first episode pulls in practically nothing for a weekend slot, while the second episode pulls in primetime weekend numbers, but without any primetime competition. I’m not watching, but do they deliberately save all the good stuff for the second episode, because it would make no sense to waste it on the episode that hardly anyone watches?

Strong deliveryman has a late night time slot, 11 p.m., so compared to best hit, it has a better rating I would say.

Ooooh. Hospital Ship really does seem to be pulling in great numbers. On one hand, I'm wondering if this is a sign from the gods that I check the drama out. On the other hand, there have been some solid shows that I loved but that didn't have great ratings so there is that probability that I and the general public might not have the same tastes in drama. Argon tho... Now that is a drama I will definitely be checking out.

If accuracy is a big part of your medical drama satisfaction, I'd suggest not watching Hospital Ship since the medical cases are way, way, way over the top unrealistic.
It's playing up the makjang elements so far so if you're fond of family histrionics (meaning shouting instead of talking) it may be your cup of tea.
Character development and establishment is average to above average. None of the characters are "cute and lovable". The romance line (if there is to be one) is non-existent so far and the cast dynamics have not truly been established yet.
Directionally, (probably give it a few more episodes to confirm) this is, until now, almost a pure Ha Ji Won drama. Her character is front and center and the rest of the cast are very much supporting. If they'd named this drama "doctor HJW" it may have made more sense since the whole "hospital ship" thing appears to be just a plot conceit at the moment.

I can't wait to be back at MBC with 20th Century Boy and Girl and Borg Mom starts next Friday, it has only Fridays and at 10 pm I think it won't have competition since the Friday dramas air at 11 pm.
Can't wait for the next round at tvn too, although I was dying for Wise Prison Life, it seems it will premiere in Nov-Dec :(
Probably While You Were Sleeping will be the one to shake up Wed-Thu timeslot.
And SBS has been a Mon-Tue winner since forever, so I think Temperature of Love will have no problem.
KBS seems pitiful for now, and I don't think Girl's Generation 1979 will bring any changes :(

I recommend watching AOY 1 first.
I am currently watching AOY 2 with a friend who didnt watch AOY 1 first ( am trying to make her a k-drama addict right now ;) and she is sometimes confused about the motivation behind the girls actions, while I can see why they are reacting that way to a certain situation.
That said you will be able to follow the story even if watching only AOY 2 but you might not get so invested in all the characters.

I read Sister Is Alive will be extended by 4 more epi due to high ratings, well it is better than *cough* Our Gap-soon which was extended by 10 epi and it was just.. unnecessary.
School 2017 ended below 5% but they managed not to go below 4% at least. I'm expecting Lingerie GG to get similar rating or maybe below. Manhole on the other hand just can't be saved anymore.
Hope Age of Youth will get 3% by next week!
Auch for Man Who Sets The Table, and same goes to another MBC weekend drama Thief Nom Thief Nim. They are taking SBS place, and SBS weekend slot is doing quite well these days. Seems like SNSD girls aren't rating magnets despite of their popularity as idols. So what's the different then if by casting idols as the leads of drama also can't achieve high rating, just like real actors? I 'm always under impression the reason behind the idol casting (especially the popular ones) for some hype and rating reason, but it doesn't seem to be that case as well.

Maybe when Sister is Alive is ended later, they can increase a little bit more. Tbh I don't find each weekend drama from each station is much better than another. KBS weekend drama always have a high rating regardless good or not good ones, if My Golden Life and Man Who Sets The Table switch places, we will see the latter will get the high rating. At least for weekend drama, I won't say the one which gets higher rating is better quality than the lower one because it is very much depends on timeslot.

I am watching both Man Who sets the table and My Golden life. Its true Father is Strange gave a good lead to My Golden Life. But that alone isn't enough to sustain viewer's or increase each week. My Golden Life has some heart tugging moments compared to Man Who sets the Table. So, a few more weeks need to pass before any judgement can be passed.

What I meant is even before Father Is Strange, getting around 20% in the first few epi for this slot is not a big deal, regardless what drama it is. If it is good and addicting, it will keep increasing. I loved first two epi of Man Who Sets The Table more, while for My Golden Life coming from My Daughter Soo Young's writer, I can expect what kind of drama it would be, not that it isn't a good drama, but not really my kind of long drama and the main casts are also not really my favs who can make me follow it religiously. Anyway, like you said, have to wait for several more weeks before making any judgment. I'm only following the former for now.

"So what's the different then if by casting idols as the leads of drama also can't achieve high rating, just like real actors? "
I am trying really hard to find out why. A lot of views on Never is as far as their star power goes. In fact, majority of koreans skip dramas simply because Idols are playing main leads. This topic is extra interesting, because when dramas with rookie cast gets not-too-low ratings no one actually seems to feel that bad, the show even gets a chance to score a second season (like in Age of Youth's case).
Honestly speaking, I wouldn't be surprised if the agencies are the ones who are paying to get cast and not the other way around.

<I am trying really hard to find out why.
Well, in some cases it means the network can sell the drama to overseas buyers very expensively, even when the drama is a total flop.
Case in point: Manhole (apparently sold to Japan at $$$$$ because of the lucrative market of Jaejoong's fans).
<I wouldn't be surprised if the agencies are the ones who are paying to get cast
I have no doubts about that.

If it is to get the overseas buyers, it makes sense for me. Maybe that's the case for TKL too. So now, at least by casting some popular idols, they can sell it overseas, compared to low rating on TV and unable to sell at overseas by casting less known actors.

September 10, 2017 at 6:59 AM
Actually selling overseas was solid argument when Korea still had relationships with China. I don't know about Jaejoong but I heard that majority of idols don't do well in Japan (even Twice had a hard time there), plus Japanese dramas themselves don't cost that much, so I doubt they would pay enough to justify low ratings.

Established groups do well in Japan. DBSK before they seperared was very popular there, not on the same as a Johnny's groups but they made some hard cash.
Japanese dramas are not as expensive to make if your going by relative cost but if you check by actual cost without taking the market into consideration are expensive due to their exchange rate. Pay in Japan is higher than Korea, hence so many people actually go there.
I didn't know Twice didn't do well, all the reports I saw said they were doing very well, selling record numbers of albums (100k+ in under 1month sounds really good to me considering not a lot of girl groups in Japan sells that much, Japanese groups included) and charting high and getting media coverage.

Perhaps casting a popular idol will bring more PPL? I can also see that if an idol is already a spokesperson for a certain brand, that brand will also consider doing product placement for the show.

Yes that's the reasons that I can think too. It's just from the tv rating context alone, I don't see any reason idol casting can boost the rating. Even some high rated drama in this year have some solid and established actors.

If the end game for these dramas is to make money (which I imagine it is), higher ratings would bring in more PPLs. But if by casting idols would guarantee that from the get-go, it seems then like a sure bet financially.

if you compare the school series where in 2013 all the leads were actors, the ratings that one got was more than triple of the 2017 one where the female lead was an idol although probably the most famous one in the last year or so. It really seems like the korean audience will trust or are more likely to watch a series with rookie actors rather than one with an idol.

It is a pretty complicated market when you think about it. There are production companies (who primarily fund the making of the show), broadcasters (who pay the production company), directors and writers (who make the show) and the actors (full time or idols) and their agencies.
In an established market, like Korea, which is hurting financially these last few years due to the China issue, the dynamics are changing. Broadcasters are going to be more conservative (no controversial dramas) and production company funding is less lucrative (less money from China etc). Supporting actors/actresses and non A list actors are probably more desperate for projects. PPLs may be a larger share of funding.
Realistically, most production companies sort of know what their targets are given their budgets. So if casting an idol generates more production funding and perhaps gives a better audience base, they'd go for it so that they can better negotiate payment from broadcasters. It is a risk-reward play - the director/writer may have to work with less skilled acting and have to "dumb down" the script somewhat for idols which in turn makes it less likely to get a ratings "hit" but is surer to hit a target (average) rating.
Idols too, come in many flavors. There are those that are completely dedicated to their music, others that plan things "beyond celebrity life", others who are up and coming and totally tied to their current schedules and yet others who do see acting as their second stage of their careers.
Despite fan hysteria and the occasional public blow up, agencies and idols are usually in a non-adversarial relationship. A good agency won't risk their talent on projects that may damage their reputation but certainly can bring in sponsorship to the production company if they want their talent involved in a project.
It can be pretty nuanced and complex.

Sadly, one thing that I've sensed in the last 2 years that I attribute to poor finances, is the lack of truly innovative and groundbreaking drama.
In this climate, controversial themes and characters are mostly replaced by standard tropes and usual-bad-guy-vs-good-guy storylines. Don't expect something like Coffee Prince or anything too revisionist to be made any time soon.
There have been some high profile dramas with the potential to be a bit groundbreaking, in my mind, like SWDBS and MQ, that started with a good concept (in both these cases, where a female character could have taken on a traditionally "male" role - stronger, tougher, smarter) but then seemed to take a left turn into the usual gender stereotypes. (independent, no! a woman needs a man to complete her. She cannot be tougher than a man? Strong, let's also make her indecisive and give her lots of aegyo. She's super smart? - let's also make her a little ditzy and clumsy etc etc)

I only follow Strongest Deliveryman and Live up to your name. Considering that SD runs at 11pm on Friday-Saturday, I think rating is pretty good. It is a show about young people, and I don't think many people in 18-35 age group stay at home or even watch TV on Fri/Sat night. Overall, ratings for all shows look low in comparison with previous years. It would be nice to know ratings for online audience and re-runs.

THIS! The ratings posted here on DB for Sister is Alive have been erroneous for the past two weeks after SBS suddenly converted it to four 35-minute back-to-back episodes, from the previous two 70-minute episodes.
Sister is Alive and its competing shows are:
- 8:45-9:20: My Golden Life (which explains why the first brings the lowest ratings), Man Who Sets the Table, Live Up to Your Name
- 9:20-9:55: Man Who Sets the Table, Live Up to Your Name, Battle Trip (variety)

For yesterday's episodes based On Nielsen:
Epi 45-9.7%
Epi 46- 17.7%
Epi 47- 19.6%
Epi 48 -21.1%
With 4/8 epi extension, there will be 20 more epi to go. The rating can go higher with this strategy. SBS strategy to air back-to-back on Saturday is working.

I'm really enjoying Hospital Ship. It's not mindblowing, but for me it's the most watchable of the current shows, and I can see why the ratings are good. The subject matter (underfunded hospital ship traveling around helping isolated rural communities) is interesting and gritty at times. There is no romance yet. And unlike most Korean medical dramas that tend to be "Greys Anatomy"-ish, this drama is focused primarily on the practice of medicine.
Also, I was hesitant about the idols in the drama, but the lead guy is actually doing a decent job playing a subdued role. HJW is also playing a very different role than she has ever played. She's so serious, cold and closed off all the time, that makes the drama interesting as well.

I hope DB will keep us posted as to what's going on with the MBC/KBS strikes and how they will effect the viewing schedules.

I'm so confused at Hospital Ship's high ratings. I feel like I'm missing something, is it the power of Ha Ji-won that draws in the viewers? Because my bias of Ha Ji-won aside, Hospital Ship feels like a somewhat mediocre drama. Ha Ji-won is basically babysitting her co-stars (except the veteran actors of course) and the story is a little slow. Maybe it's just me. I do watch Hospital Ship though but I can't say I'm loving it that much.

people are watching because ha ji won's character is interesting. not many female leads like her in k-dramaland. the ratings will dip probably when while you were sleeping starts. however hospital ship is a relaxing drama. if you have had a tiring day and then you watch it with all of its sunsets and waves hitting the rocks, it definitely takes the stress off your mind.

Yes, the problem I have with this drama is that Ha Ji-won IS the only character that I'm interested in. I mean I absolutely love Ha Ji-won and would love for more female characters liker hers, but she's basically carrying the entire drama on her shoulders and I don't think that's very good story telling.

Yeah, best way to watch it is to consider it a travelogue.

I think it is due to the power of Ha Ji-won + medical drama which usually can draw more audiences. Besides the competitors are weak, I mean too weak (see Manhole's ratings). The real competition will begin when Lee Jong-suk's new drama begins at the end of this month. I doubt HS will decrease a lot, they might either be affected or not affected at all.

It feels mediocre because it IS mediocre. There is nothing in the show that is original at all except for supposedly being on a hospital ship - which seems to spend most of it's time tied up at the dock.

Same. I love Ha Ji Won since School 2 when I didn't have a clue what they were saying but was mesmerized by her gangster girl vibes.
I find Hospital Ship very uninteresting but I like her character as it feels like a more grown up SeJin (from School 2) with a different background. The guys and the nurses I could do without sometimes. But they do offset her seriousness so thats a plus.

I'm so happpy that Live up to your name is doing very well. They deserved the high ratings and I'm praying it breaks double digits soon. Just got done watching ep 10 and what an emotional wreck I am. TT_TT

As much as I love LUTYN, I don't think it will reach double digits. At best it'll probably hit 8%. Episode 10 pulled in 6.5%. I would love for higher ratings, too, but its current ratings are already very good as well. I've only watched half of Ep. 10 as I'm still stuck at work but I can't wait to head home and finish it. Also, darn it, the week's only just begun. It feels like ages until the weekend comes again! T__T

I'm watching the medical dramas, both Hospital Ship and Live Up to Your Name. I like that LUTYN has a more humorous feel to it 'coz the time travel trend is just overrated now. Both actors have done an amazing job in justifying their roles. The switch of Heo Im between goofy and serious is delightful. I'm not sure how the romantic side of this drama will turn up because one if from the past, but I'm still rooting for a HEA.

Im a big fan of korean drama and i've watch a lot of dramas i can say that hospital ship its a great drama to watch a lot of moral lesson to learn .. its showcase true story that is happening to provinces to there country not just focussing in general hospital in the city but they are really showing what it is reality .that most official in the goverment dont focus giving medical treatment to those provinces . I also love the actors ..speacially ha ji won ! ? which we all know that she's very good in any roles that she portray!! I best recommend to watch this drama
