School 2017: Episode 8
by chocolatte
Love, love, love. School 2017 is delivering a perfect combination of heart, humor, and fun, so that I’m laughing one minute and crying the next (but all in a good way!). It’s impossible not to get invested in the happiness of our ragtag group of students the more we get to know them, and though I know pain and heartbreak are an inevitable part of growing up, all I want for them is to find joy and meaning in life, whether it’s through friends, family, or yes, even school.
EPISODE 8 RECAP
Tae-woon shocks the room with his announcement that he was the one who broke into the teachers’ office with Eun-ho. Just as Tae-woon’s explaining that they entered the office because they thought they saw X, Dae-hwi drops by the office to deliver something.
As Dae-hwi lingers, Tae-woon continues his story, claiming that they followed a hooded figure into the office, only to see him escape through the window. When Teacher Shim asks if Tae-woon saw X’s face, Tae-woon pauses to take a long look at Dae-hwi before saying he didn’t.
Eun-ho hesitates and then affirms Tae-woon’s account of the break-in, causing Teacher Gu to yell about not knowing who to believe. Tae-woon points out that there’s no evidence that he and Eun-ho were in the office to cause trouble, so Teacher Gu punishes them for the only thing he can: breaking into the office.
Teacher Shim confronts Officer Han for sharing his suspicions about the break-in with Teacher Gu. Officer Han protests that she’s doing her job, and tells Teacher Shim that it’s not right to automatically cover for the students—even if it hurts now, she says it’s better to point out what’s wrong and get them on the right path.
When Teacher Shim asks why they can’t just console and protect their students, Officer Han says, “Then what?” She asks if Teacher Shim’s planning on comforting his students when they’re out in the real world, too, then tells him, “To protect them now, even if you can’t take responsibility for them—I don’t know if there’s any meaning to it.”
In Tae-woon’s hideout, Eun-ho suggests that they fill Dae-hwi in on what’s happened. Tae-woon’s temper flares at the mention of Dae-hwi, and he tells her that she should feel wronged, not worried for him.
Eun-ho asks why Tae-woon bothered to return the competition questions then—wasn’t it to help Dae-hwi? Tae-woon tells Eun-ho to stop and snarls that he’s regretting having gotten involved, and storms out angrily.
Elsewhere, Dae-hwi reviews his spotless student record. He crumples up the document, looking like he’s going to burst into tears.
Tae-woon walks into class and doesn’t even look at Eun-ho, though Eun-ho tries to sneak glances at him behind her. But his anger doesn’t last long, as he finds a cute drawing of X from Eun-ho on his desk, complete with an apology note and a peace offering of lemonade. Aw.
He breaks into a grin, though he quickly tries to hide both his smile and the note when his buddy Byung-gu approaches. Eun-ho smiles to herself as Tae-woon bats away Byung-gu’s attempts to steal the drawing.
Outside, Eun-ho apologizes to Tae-woon for not thinking about his feelings—she says she knows it’s not easy to step up for someone, and that she took his willingness to help her for granted.
Still, Eun-ho can’t help but continue to worry about Dae-hwi, earning her another scolding from Tae-woon. He reminds her that Dae-hwi’s getting off scot-free while the two of them are being formally disciplined by the school, and the thought of receiving more demerits makes her panic.
Their classmates are soon gawking at Eun-ho and Tae-woon’s punishment notice, and Sa-rang in particular looks distressed at the news. When their classmate Jung-il wonders how Sa-rang could be in the dark about something related to Eun-ho, Sa-rang says sadly that maybe they aren’t best friends after all. Oh nooooo.
Dae-hwi stops by to look at the notice, but walks away when Tae-woon approaches and stares him down.
Eun-ho and Tae-woon end up back outside, where she moans about her terrible student record. Noting Eun-ho’s misery, Tae-woon gets up abruptly and says that they should tell the truth about Dae-hwi’s involvement in the break-in.
Of course, Eun-ho’s against it, but Tae-woon doesn’t understand why they should lie to protect Dae-hwi. Eun-ho seems to think Dae-hwi feels remorseful about the whole situation, while Tae-woon just gapes at her, then stalks off.
He quickly finds Dae-hwi with Hee-chan, and calls out to him, “Hey, you scum!” Dae-hwi tries to usher Hee-chan away, but is forced to stop when Tae-woon threatens to reveal just how low Dae-hwi really is. After sending Hee-chan on his way, Dae-hwi faces a seething Tae-woon, who asks how he could ignore them after causing so much suffering.
Dae-hwi tells Tae-woon to just report him then, instead of taking the blame for the break-in and acting high and mighty about it. Tae-woon challenges Dae-hwi to turn himself in, reminding him that Eun-ho’s messing up her own student record to protect him. “If you feel even a little bit apologetic to her, go tell them right now,” he says.
Dae-hwi blusters to Tae-woon that he’s not afraid of confessing, though he’s clearly shaken at the idea. Tae-woon hits him where it hurts and asks if his inferiority complex counts as pride, and says that he pities him. Dae-hwi balls his hand into a fist, but says nothing as he walks away.
Dae-hwi heads to the athletic field to regroup, and Nam-joo stops by to ask what’s wrong. Not bothering to look at his girlfriend, Dae-hwi replies that he hates himself, and says that he feels like everything about him is lies. Nam-joo gets a little fidgety when she tells Dae-hwi that everyone lies, and that they do it because there’s a reason for it. Dae-hwi finally looks up at Nam-joo and asks, “Really?”
At home, Dae-hwi notices something missing in his desk drawer, and he looks all around his room in a panic. He turns his gaze to his mom when she walks in, and she quickly confesses that she took some of his money, you know, because it was urgent. Ugh.
She promises to pay him back, but Dae-hwi just says that it’s a good thing she spent the money. “No matter how hard I work, I’m back to where I started,” he says bitterly. His mom tells him not to worry and to keep studying hard, but Dae-hwi says he won’t do it anymore because it’s no use. With tears in his eyes, he asks, “Do you know what I gave up, just to protect this stupid thing?”
The next day, Dae-hwi walks purposefully to the teachers’ office, but hesitates just outside the door. He seems to have made up his mind to go in (to confess?), but is interrupted by Teacher Shim.
Dae-hwi’s ushered inside, where Teacher Shim tells him that he’s being recommended for a scholarship at Seoyul University. Dae-hwi looks thrilled at the opportunity, and it seems like his original reason for visiting the office has disappeared.
As Teacher Shim notes that he hasn’t been looking well, Dae-hwi catches a glimpse of the punishment notice for Eun-ho and Tae-woon on the teacher’s screen. Looking resolute, he tells Teacher Shim that he wants to go to Seoyul University for sure, and that he’ll do whatever it takes to get in, and not look back.
When Tae-woon arrives home, his father greets him with a hard slap on the face. Dad is pissed that Tae-woon caused trouble at school again, and asks his son if he broke into the teachers’ office because of Eun-ho, whom he refers to as a delinquent. He tells Tae-woon that he can cause all the trouble he wants, but reminds his son that he’ll always find a way to get only Tae-woon out of it.
Tae-woon heads to his lookout spot and blows off steam by walking precariously along the edge. As he does a little skip move, he’s reminded of a time when Joon-ki had done the same—back then, Tae-woon had hung back nervously with Dae-hwi, telling Joon-ki to be careful, and Joon-ki had laughed at him for being scared.
Dae-hwi and Tae-woon had tussled with each other as they each tried to muster up the courage to join Joon-ki on the edge. When Joon-ki made fun of them, Dae-hwi and Tae-woon had ganged up on their friend, attacking him playfully.
In the present, Tae-woon smiles wistfully at the memory, then startles to see Dae-hwi standing there, looking straight at him. Tae-woon turns away, but when his foot slips a bit, Dae-hwi cries out in alarm, “It’s dangerous!”
Tae-woon calls out that what Dae-hwi is doing is more dangerous. In a softer tone, he says, “Stop it, you punk.”
When Dae-hwi charges back at Tae-woon and asks why he should stop, Tae-woon responds, “Aren’t you ashamed to face Joon-ki?” Dae-hwi says he isn’t—he did cheap and dirty things, but still barely got to where he is now. “How can I stop here?” he asks.
Tae-woon wonders if Dae-hwi won’t regret it, but Dae-hwi assures Tae-woon that he won’t, and tells him to stay out of his life. But as Dae-hwi turns to walk away, tears slip down his face.
At the bus stop, Tae-woon’s words about being ashamed sink in, and Dae-hwi breaks down in sobs.
The next day, Dae-hwi marches into the teachers’ office with purpose and heads straight for Teacher Gu. Without preamble, Dae-hwi announces that he was the one who broke into the teachers’ office that night—not Tae-woon—and he did it to steal the answers to the math competition. He apologizes to both Teacher Gu and Teacher Shim, who both look flabbergasted at Dae-hwi’s confession.
Next stop for Dae-hwi: a disciplinary panel. Vice Principal Park tells Dae-hwi to speak up if there was a misunderstanding, but Dae-hwi tells the group of administrators and teachers that he has nothing to say.
Before Vice Principal Park moves to announce his punishment, Dae-hwi asks if the punishment for Eun-ho and Tae-woon can be canceled. He says they gave a false confession to protect him, and when Teacher Gu wonders why they’d go so far as to lie for him, Dae-hwi just says they acted stupidly.
Eun-ho waits outside the hall for Dae-hwi when Tae-woon joins her. He denies that he’s there because he’s worried about Dae-hwi, but judging by the way he anxiously looks over at the door, that’s exactly why he’s there. You’re not fooling anyone, Tae-woon!
When Dae-hwi finally appears, Tae-woon takes off without a word. Eun-ho greets Dae-hwi with a smile, then looks over at Tae-woon’s retreating figure, thinking to herself, “I wonder if Dae-hwi knew that we had lied to protect him.”
Dae-hwi’s punishment notice is posted, and it gets even more attention than Eun-ho and Tae-woon’s, given who the subject is. Both Tae-woon and Dae-hwi hang back from the crowd of students gaping at the news; Tae-woon glances sideways at his friend, while Dae-hwi looks straight ahead.
Officer Han asks Teacher Shim if he was protecting Dae-hwi the night of the break-in, and Teacher Shim responds that he didn’t know it was Dae-hwi, exactly. She comments that the confession he made about liking her must have also been a lie then—something to try to distract her and protect the kids.
Looking surprised, Teacher Shim awkwardly says it wasn’t a complete lie, and adds nervously that the lie may have become the truth—then walks away abruptly. Officer Han looks pleased as punch, and literally skips after him.
For once, Dae-hwi is honest with Nam-joo when she asks about the break-in incident, telling her that he tried to steal the questions to the competition because he couldn’t get to where he wanted to be on his own.
Nam-joo’s quick to take Dae-hwi’s side, telling him that he did what he had to do, since the competition was fixed. Dae-hwi opens up even more, telling her that he felt lonely and scared, and that he wanted to tell her the truth: why he did it, how he felt, and how much he regretted it. At that, Nam-joo looks up at Dae-hwi in surprise.
Eun-ho’s in a good mood at the way things turned out with Dae-hwi, and even more so as she reads over comments left by the first (and only) fan of her webtoon. When she wonders why the comments are so short, Tae-woon just sighs, “You want so much.” LOL.
Cut to: Tae-woon asking Byung-gu for help crafting a comment that’s long, but also touching, witty, and insightful. As Tae-woon stares at him expectantly, Byung-gu thinks for a moment, then offers a three-syllable word for “totally awesome.” He keeps suggesting variations of the same phrase, then scoots away before Tae-woon can respond with a beating.
Kyung-woo catches Sa-rang on their way out of school, and when she notes the absence of his guitar, he says they’re on a break. He comments on Eun-ho’s absence, to which Sa-rang says that they must be on a break too. She asks if it isn’t wrong for friends to keep secrets from each other, so he encourages her to be honest with Eun-ho, though Sa-rang just pretends that she wasn’t talking about Eun-ho at all.
Changing the subject, Kyung-woo asks Sa-rang if she’s ever had convenience store ramyun. The two end up at a nearby store for a snack, and Kyung-woo tells her that he wants to experience normal high school life in Korea since he grew up abroad. He takes it back though, when Sa-rang tells him the Korean high school experience is just about studying like crazy.
Kyung-woo brings up Eun-ho again, telling Sa-rang that she should be honest with her. He smiles at Sa-rang’s feeble attempts to deny her problems with Eun-ho, then leans in close to tell her, “You’re a terrible liar.”
Bit-na’s mom arrives at school with an army of lawyers to make a scene in the teachers’ office, yelling at Teacher Shim for making Bit-na write a letter of apology for the fight with Bo-ra. While Bit-na nonchalantly plays with her phone, her mom insists on holding a formal disciplinary hearing, telling Teacher Shim that her lawyers will ensure Bit-na’s defense. Worst mother-daughter duo ever.
After commiserating with his fellow teachers about the situation, Teacher Shim makes a last-ditch effort to try to get Bo-ra to tell the truth, promising her that he’ll help in whatever way he can. That reminds Bo-ra of the time that Teacher Jang said those exact words to her once before, and Bo-ra insists to Teacher Shim that she has nothing to say.
Bo-ra’s day gets worse when she’s harassed by Young-gun and her crew outside. As they rummage through her bag, Young-gun warns Bo-ra not to say anything about them at the disciplinary hearing.
At the hearing, Bo-ra looks around nervously at the adults in the room, then tells them what most of them want to hear: She attacked Bit-na without provocation. Teacher Shim looks distraught, but Teacher Jang tells everyone that since Bo-ra admitted her crime, there’s nothing else they can do.
Upon hearing those words, Bo-ra looks up sharply at Teacher Jang, tears welling up in her eyes. Teacher Jang does her best to avoid Bo-ra’s gaze.
Later, Teacher Shim stares blankly at Bo-ra’s punishment notice, which indicates that she’s being suspended for a week. Looking numb, Bo-ra stumbles out of school, then is jostled hard by one of Young-gun’s cronies as they pass by. Bo-ra stops and stares at the sky, looking completely hopeless and defeated.
After Dae-hwi fixes the chain on Eun-ho’s bike, she mentions how cool he was for coming clean to the teachers, and says that things must have been hard for him. When he tells her she’s had it tough too, she suggests that he treat her to shaved ice, and he happily agrees.
Tae-woon happens on this exchange, and HA, he gives Dae-hwi some crazy eyes as he makes his way over to Eun-ho. Still glaring, Tae-woon orders Eun-ho not to eat shaved ice with Dae-hwi.
When she asks him why not, he sputters that he just doesn’t want her to. She doesn’t see why, but he barks that it’s the same as not wanting to get up in the morning and not liking beans in his rice—he just doesn’t like it. Eun-ho gets big a kick out of needling him and says she’s going to go anyway and laughs as he stomps away.
As soon as she’s out of sight, Tae-woon lets out a tiny smile, then slows down, his mind swirling with images of Eun-ho. He shakes himself back to reality, waving his arms around as if to swat away his feelings for her, and tells himself to snap out of it.
But that definitely doesn’t work, as Tae-woon can’t keep his eyes off of Eun-ho in class. He follows her as she’s getting ready to leave the empty room, grabbing her so that she’s facing him. Slowly he steps towards her, then as she’s about to step back, he holds onto her arms to pull her close, causing her to stutter, “What? What is it?”
Tae-woon cocks his head, then says, “It’s not, right?” She asks him again what he’s talking about, and he says she looks dumb, then calls her a dimwit for good measure. Boys.
As he walks out, he tells himself, “Yeah, there’s no way.” But then he stops short in the doorway, his heart beating rapidly, and looks completely thrown by his feelings.
Officer Han creeps up behind Teacher Shim as he’s practicing different ways to ask her to a movie. She asks if he’s planning to ask her out, but Teacher Shim just ends up mumbling some excuses.
As Teacher Shim beats around the bush, Teacher Jung swoops in from nowhere, squeezing in between his colleagues and asking Officer Han to the movies. Officer Han laughs at his brashness, but she accepts, looking pointedly at Teacher Shim as he watches in dismay.
Teacher Shim tries again after school, offering to treat his students to food as an excuse to invite Officer Han along. He’s none too pleased when Teacher Jung joins them, but he still ends up taking everyone out for—you guessed it—sandwiches.
After the meal, Eun-ho, Tae-woon, Dae-hwi, and Nam-joo end up walking in the same direction, where they run across a supervisor yelling at a worker replacing bricks on the sidewalk. When the worker gets up to defend himself, Eun-ho’s eyes widen in shock as she recognizes her dad.
Eun-ho runs to her father and speaks up in his defense, but the supervisor turns on her next, upsetting Eun-ho’s dad. It’s only when Tae-woon steps in to “talk” to the supervisor threateningly that he backs down.
As Eun-ho fusses over her dad, Dae-hwi watches the scene intently, while Nam-joo lowers her gaze, looking almost guilty.
On their way home, Eun-ho asks her dad if he’s coming home late because he’s working late every night. He says he doesn’t mind, since with the extra money, he can buy things like prep classes for Eun-ho. She’s upset by the idea that Dad is suffering because of her, but he says that isn’t the only reason he’s taken on extra work.
He tells her that the street he’s repaving is on her way to school, and that he wanted to at least make her path to school nice and pretty, since he couldn’t pave her path in life like other dads. He says he wants her to walk on flowery paths all her life, but apologizes that he can only give her this short path.
Blinking back tears, Eun-ho says that she’ll be walking on flowery paths thanks to him, and the two share a sweet hug. I’m not crying, nope.
As Dae-hwi walks Nam-joo home, he tells her that he used to lie about his mom’s profession because he was so embarrassed by her, and marvels at how amazing Eun-ho is for not caring about what others think. He doesn’t notice Nam-joo’s visible irritation until she calls him out for talking about Eun-ho nonstop.
Nam-joo tells Dae-hwi to head back, saying she’s fine to get home herself, then reminds him about their upcoming 200-day anniversary. After watching Dae-hwi disappear down the street, Nam-joo heads the opposite way to her real neighborhood.
At school, Teacher Shim stalks Officer Han with two drinks in hand, but he bumps into Tae-woon, missing his chance to continue his operation to woo her. Tae-woon politely greets Teacher Shim, all the while eyeing the teacher’s extra drink like he’s dying of thirst, ha.
Tae-woon scores the soda and gulps it down, which leads Teacher Shim to wonder if there’s something frustrating him. Tae-woon says something is bothering him: “They’re not particularly special feelings, but I want to do things like drink soda together…”
Teacher Shim pipes in knowingly, “And eat together.” HA. It’s even funnier when Teacher Gu joins their repartee, as he chimes in, “You want to be with them just a little bit longer. You want to do even the smallest thing together.” As Tae-woon and Teacher Gu stare up wondrously at Teacher Gu’s wisdom, he concludes, “That’s what it’s like to like someone.” At that, Tae-woon drops his can in shock and says out loud, “Me?”
Eun-ho’s on delivery duty again that night, and as luck would have it, it takes her straight to Tae-woon’s house, where he waits for her, cash in hand. He makes sure to collect a coupon from her before she heads out, which can only mean one thing: It’s going to be a long night of deliveries for Eun-ho.
Sure enough, Eun-ho is forced to go back to Tae-woon’s with another delivery as soon as she gets home. Once there, she threatens to kill Tae-woon if he puts in another order, but that doesn’t stop him for asking for another coupon. He then proceeds to order more chicken, noting gleefully that collecting ten coupons will get him an extra bird.
By this time, Eun-ho’s tearing her hair out in frustration and asks Tae-woon if he hates her. He childishly tells her that teasing her is really fun before running away, and their bickering over chicken continues into the next day at school. These two.
Nam-joo waits for Dae-hwi at a coffee shop, having made plans for their anniversary. But as the minutes tick by, Dae-hwi doesn’t come, and he doesn’t answer her calls, either.
She trudges home in disappointment, only to find Dae-hwi waiting outside her real apartment holding flowers and a present, looking upset. Eek, he knows! Nam-joo immediately launches into excuses, telling him that this isn’t where she really lives. Dae-hwi simply says that he liked her a lot, then pauses as tears spring to his eyes. He then asks, “But why do you keep lying to me?”
Their relationship ends there, and at school, the two pass by each other as if they’re strangers. Meanwhile, we hear in voiceover a phone call that Dae-hwi had made to Nam-joo’s dad’s company, inquiring about the CEO’s daughter—where he’d learned that said CEO didn’t have a daughter.
Eun-ho narrates that everyone tells lies “to protect something, or to hide something. And, we have to take responsibility for the consequences of our lies. Sometimes, there’s even greater truth within our lies that we couldn’t realize.”
Eun-ho struggles with the storyline for her webtoon, and asks Tae-woon why X would lie to her after saving her. Tae-woon tells her that he probably couldn’t believe it, because he wasn’t aware of his feelings. When Eun-ho asks him what kind of feelings, Tae-woon looks at her, wide-eyed. Luckily for him, a sudden rain shower puts an end to their conversation.
They run through the rain together and take cover under some trees. When a trickle of water hits Eun-ho, Tae-woon instinctively lifts his bag over her head and she steps under it in perfect time, bringing them suddenly very close.
As he looks down at her, obviously affected their proximity, she slowly breaks out in a wide smile. Gruffly, Tae-woon tells her, “Don’t smile like that. It makes my heart flutter.”
Eun-ho’s smile fades, and as the two gaze at one another, Tae-woon slowly puts his bag down and leans in to kiss her.
COMMENTS
Was anyone else holding their breath during those last few minutes? I can’t believe we have to wait for the next episode to find out what happens! Do they kiss? Is Tae-woon going to pull another one of those ridiculous fake-outs? Is Byung-gu going to pop out of nowhere? How many more of these near-kiss moments are we going to have?
Now that those questions are out of my system, let me just say how happy I am with the show right now—it’s certainly doing justice to the bigger stories we were promised from the beginning, from the pitch-perfect buildup of both the friendship and the romance between Tae-woon and Eun-ho, to the slower, but compelling reveal of Dae-hwi’s background and his now-fraught relationship with Tae-woon. But I also appreciate how powerful and heartfelt some of its smaller storylines are as well, like Teacher Shim’s give-and-take with his students and colleagues, and Eun-ho and Sa-rang’s friendship (and the strain it’s now under with Tae-woon in the picture—so real!).
Eun-ho continues to be the heart of the show, as someone who consistently stands up for her ideals and back up her friends and family without reservation or hesitation. I just adore her relationship with her dad, who’s like Eun-ho in so many ways, and though they don’t get a ton of screen time together, moments like the one we saw this episode provides an uplifting counter narrative to the hopelessness we see in the stories of some of our other kids, like Bo-ra. That simple moment between father and daughter on their way home really helps us understand the type of dad Eun-ho has, what she might have learned from him, and how important her family is in shaping her outlook on life.
It’s easy for me to see why Tae-woon’s so head over heels for Eun-ho, even if he himself may not have realized it until Teacher Gu said the words out loud. My favorite thing about Tae-woon’s slowly developing feelings—besides his goofy smiles and swoony moves, of course—is the way he automatically just does whatever he thinks will keep Eun-ho safe and happy, even if it requires some sacrifice on his part. That could be something as minor as letting Eun-ho just claim his hideout as her own, or more substantive, like going against his own advice and stepping up for other people.
It’s also thanks to Eun-ho that we’re just starting to see a tiny glimmer of hope for Tae-woon and Dae-hwi’s friendship. After this episode, I think what I’m looking forward to most in the series—even more than watching Eun-ho and Tae-woon bumble through their relationship—is watching how Tae-woon and Dae-hwi will (hopefully?) reconcile. While Tae-woon doesn’t have the most tactful or compassionate way with words, I found it poignant that he was the one who forced Dae-hwi to examine his recent choices, helping him decide to make amends by telling the truth.
It’s clear that Tae-woon’s already on his way to letting go of his grudge with Dae-hwi, whether he knows it or not, but Dae-hwi’s going to be a tougher nut to crack. I just love how complex but relatable his character is—I struggled along with him as he went back and forth about confessing about the break-in, and my heart broke when I realized that he’d actually known about Nam-joo’s lies all along. Dae-hwi can be calculating, and he’s not afraid to lie and test people, but it’s all a defense mechanism—his best way of protecting himself from disappointment and pain. One of my favorite parts about the flashbacks we get of him, Tae-woon, and Joon-ki is getting a glimpse of how much happier Dae-hwi used to be back then—and it’s my hope that he gets some of that joy back as he slowly makes his way back to Tae-woon.

Huh, what? Hey why? 야 왜?
I know it's never allowed when, especially the girl lead is still a minor, in any show. And the girl lead girl is normally younger. Because the age restrictions is usually 15 and older only.
But Kim Sejeong is 20 isn't she, but cool oppa Kim Jung Hyun is 27. So I am guessing he'll get the rage of the age restriction setters mostly. Because he is older. LOL!!! Their years apart aren't that bad now that I look at it!!!

I'm glad that the 2 boys finally started to mend their relationship. And I'm so proud of Dae-hwi for owning up to his mistake and telling the truth to his teachers. The consequences might be bitter, but I'm sure it's also liberating. The lies he told and the debasing actions he did all year aren't worth those small taste of privilege from his rich classmates. I believe there will be another way for him to achieve his dream. Teacher Shim is stubborn enough to make sure Dae-hwi get what he deserved. And now he also has true friends that will support him to do the impossible.
On a side note, my second ship is sailing happily. Insightful Kyung-woo and golden hearted Sa-rang is perfect together. Can't we call them eating on that convenience store as their first unofficial date??

I think I actually hate DaeHwi's mom the most in this whole drama, closely followed by Bitna's mother. It's hard to hate Tae Woon's father because to me he will forever be Joo Gun's hapless uncle who married a richer older woman in the Master's Sun haha. His comedic timing was so good in that drama, and the leads there had as much on and off screen chemistry as Taeunho or whatever their ship name is called ❤️

i love that they haven't sidelined the girls' friendship, and they've taken the time to include sa-rang's hurt at feeling abandoned. it's so common in high school, especially with first relationships, and i'm confident that the girls will make up eventually, but it's just really relatable, in an adorably sad kind of way.

Actually I'm quite surprised that the drama addressed how Sa-rang felt hurt because Eun-ho didn't spend as much time with her anymore. It's the kind of pain we can easily identified with. And I'm just glad she told Kyung-woo that she felt hurt. That boy is wise and I'm pretty sure she'll put his advice to good use. So yeah, I believe we'll get a nice conclusion for the 2 girls' problem. Hopefully soon.

That is a real part of school life though which the writer is highligting...what happens to BFFs when one gets a boyfriend. Even though it's not "official" Eunho spends so much time with Tae woon now they might as well be...the fact is naturally she won't have as much time to spend with Sarang, both girls need to learn to re-distribute their time without sacrificing their friendship because if Taeho becomes official then they just have to deal with it

Maybe he was used to be a loving father. But when TW's mother passed away (I assumed she has passed away when TW said he has no mother), his father started to change. If this is the case, I have a little hope he can be redeemed. I want to see some sweet moments between him & his father before this drama ends.

I'm not delusional enough to hope he'll do a 180 and become a caring and loving Dad since it seems like he's been using money and influence for his own cause for a long, long time. But at least, I still want to see him understand that Tae-woon doesn't want to use his way and that his son values different things and respecting that.

August 11, 2017 at 5:14 AM
Look on the bright side, TaeWoon may not be working hard at school but he is quite capable. He is probably on civil terms with his father only so that he can have access to money to pull off the well thought out pranks.
He is the modern day "Robinhood or Iljimae" just his dad is the source of wealth he takes from for the greater good.
It is interesting that such a rich kid isn't really a spoilt brat by heart and is thoughtful even before Joonki died, TW was observed as kind and giving. He is also resourceful and independent and unlike Bitna, who needs "her mommy" to throw her wealth around. TW uses his non-bought people well, like promising Eunho to rig the competiton, gaining her trust, even though she had to work for it. And if his "daddy" were to cut him off for living dangerously he could always draw for Eunho's successful webtoon someday!!!

August 11, 2017 at 5:30 AM
The way I see it, I think Tae Won's father does love him. And maybe using money and influence are his ways of protecting Tae Won. There are many different types of fatherly love, although I do not agree with his approach towards Tae Won, I can feel that he only wants the best for Tae Won.

I would like to thank that rooftop car park (?) for giving rise to some of my favourite scenes so far, and beautifully shot to boot :')
I was actually surprised the writer thought of showing Sarang's feelings when Eunho accidentally starts neglecting her; the tension when one half of a best friend pair finds a new friend is actually really common irl, but it's not something I've seen explored in dramas a lot.
It's also quite a natural way to introduce a new friendship for Sarang and Kyungwoo (squee!). I absolutely love how naturally the unexpected friendships are struck up in this drama, like Eunho and Taewoon, and now these two. Since Kyungwoo is offering his insight and advice, I'm curious about what Sarang will be offering in return in future episodes.
By the way, is anyone else wondering about what else Daehwi could have possibly done? I know he spots questions for Heechan and gives him notes in exchange for favours, and then there's the stealing of the question paper, but somehow the remarks that Taewoon makes gives me a feeling there's something more. Like TW telling him he should ask what he knows DH uses the master key for, or saying he's hitting rock bottom, or using cheap and dirty tricks. DH is definitely selling his pride to get favours from the rich kids, but it doesn't seem strictly unethical enough to warrant such an assessment. Am I the only one getting the feeling that TW knows more things DH has done that the viewers don't know yet?

And the worst part is Daehwi's self-awareness, he is ashamed he has to stoop to this level but he pushes on because he's desperate. He's just such a layered character. And Taewoon is brutally honest with his taunting, which comes from good intentions but hits a sore spot, so I can see how it's harder for Daehwi to warm back up to him. The writing creates a really interesting dynamic between them.

This is why it is Eun Ho between them. Eun Ho sometimes might reminded them of their late friend with her cheefulness and bright personality so naturally they are inclining towards her.. I also think it was Joon gi who made them closer in the past because based on both Tae-woon & Dae-hwi currently, neither of them seem will take first step towards each other.

It's sad that part of that desperation was because of the aftermath of that bus crash. Joong-ki's name was pinpointed as the sole cause of the crash while Taewoon got off scot-free because of his connections. As the audience, we know that Joong-ki was at fault for looking at his phone, but to Dae-Hwi, it seemed like an accident and the rich had the ability to ruin a good kid's name while the poor can't do anything about it.

I don't think DH has been stealing question papers before this. He only did it once when he was so desperate to win the math competition for himself since the other rich kids got their answers already. He was studying so hard for it, and it was killing him inside when he intended to steal the answer which is why at the end he confessed. Tae Woon didn't really see who's in the black hoodie, but knew it was Dae Hwi because of his master key which is why TW said DH is already hit the rock bottom for being so low and use cheap trick. TW is also upset at DH for sticking around rich kids, by giving them notes and do their homeworks just because DH needs money and favors in return.

I'm pretty sure he hasn't been cheating on his other tests, because the show has already established that he got his results through a lot of hard work (and he was already the top student even a year ago when Joonggi was still alive). Why does my heart always break at least twice each episode, once for DaeHwi, and once for TaeWoon?
If they were just to bro-hug it out once...is that too much to ask for since our two role-model-bromance boys from School 2013 didn't hug?
But hey losing a best friend in an accident is more painful than losing your life dream right? So hopefully EunHo, their Gugudan-angel, I mean guardian-angel, will force them to embrace. Especially since Im JoonKi, played by Kim Jin Woo (1993)...glad to see he is being credited for his role, inadvertently chose her to be their mediator in the present day if you think about it!!!

Their not-kissing or almost-kissing is sometimes more exciting than actual kissing. And if you watch the behind the scenes footage, I think they said that this scene was inspired by the previous behind the scenes footage where Kim Junghyun sheltered Kim Sejeong with his bag in the sudden rain ( how to not ship these two ?! ) . On another note, I love how other characters got their moments - like Kyung Woo and Sa Rang being together! Even the teachers are beginning to have romantic developments with their colleagues ? And it's such a good thing for Dae Hwi and Nam Joo to stop lying to each other and be honest. I was honestly surprised to hear Dae Hwi say that he liked Nam Joo! I think in Dae Hwi's case the old saying, "you can't fully love someone else unless you love yourself," comes into play. He is so disgusted with his actions and focused on just surviving, that he really has nothing left in him for Nam Joo. I think when he stops and just starts enjoying life like he used to when he was the three muskateers with TaeWoon and Joongji, then he can start to enjoy a healthy romantic relationship the way it is supposed to be.

I'm proud of Dae Hwi for confessing his crime and I love when both Eun Ho and Tae Woon wait for Dae Hwi to get out from the hall. Aww, this trio ❤️
Writer-nim is teasing us with such ending! I was screaming "faster, I don't need this slow-motion and repetitive effects! Just kiss already!" But there you go, we all have to wait one more week for that scene.

I agree. DaeHwi confessing his crime was really good growth. TaeWoon so worried about DH as Eunho catches that worried look on his face. The best.
Also when TaeWoon nearly slipped at the edge of that lookout, why was he on the edge again? ...feelings of invincibility TW? And DaeHwi was something like whoah watch out, I cried because this is the first glimmer of hope TW has that DH might still want to be friends with him no matter what really happened.

KBSWorld is hopelessly slow with subs so I'll translate it since it's short! Starting from 1:34 onwards.
*Director tells JH to put his bag up etc.*
SJ: Where have we seen this scene before?
JH: (To viewers) You'll know when you watch the Making Film 4.
-Inserted clip-
JH: I wasn't intending to do something mannerly... I just did it...
SJ: Because I went under the shelter so naturally so it came out that way [like he was lifting the bag up to cover her in a gentlemanly fashion], isn't it?
Actually oppa was going to shelter himself, but because I ducked under the bag so it came out like he was holding up his bag for me.
JH: Actually I was supposed to hold up my bag higher, but in the midst [of doing that] Sejeong went underneath.
Caption: Because [they're] shy, let's just say that this was what happened... (Production staff are on board the ship too wahaha)

Sejeong said he bought her a vitamin / vitamin drink something like that which has Kim Tae Hee as the endorser. ( I guess it must be quite expensive since the model is Kim Tae Hee.) Junghyun said it is 1+1 (buy 1 free 1), so he gave 1 to her. But Sejeong said it is written for female lol. So at the end Junghyun can't say anything anymore haha!
About the shirt change - at first he wore black / dark colour shirt- then Sejeong said their clothes have no chemistry. Since it is dark at night, Jungjyun might not looking good in that shirt. Junghyun said he actually wore brighter shirt, and that black shirt is not his. So both of them went near to the camera to see their faces - next Junghyun said 'let's change the clothes'. After he changed, Sejeong said she doesn't know what to do with him, he said he want to wear couple outfit (so that's why he changed to white shirt instead, the same colour with Sejeong) ?
They have been low key flirting behind the scene..?

So many things I love about this episode. With the cliffhanger from ep 7, I thought TW was gonna confess that he's Student X. I'm sort of glad he didn't because otherwise DH wouldn't have own up to his mistake.
If I were teacher Shim, I'd probably dread going to work the next day thinking what other 'surprises' I would be getting from my students. They're all on points especially on the friendship between the trio. It felt weird everytime I see the flashbacks when DH and TW were smiling and laughing at each other. Half way mark...,
TaeWoon's magnanimity is by choice, throwing himself under 'that' bus as it were, and not because he is forced to. He takes the blame for the greater good even if it means his living friend DaeHwi will be lost to him forever. And TW is choosing to live his life recklessly but still in the name of Joonki. Kim Jung Hyun! Need I say anymore?
DaeHwi has however reached the most difficult point in his life. Figuratively his two 'best friends', TaeWoon and JoonKi, are standing with him at the edge of their lookout-spot. And smart DH knows that he is at the precipice of his life and that he is suffocating with his studies, the severe loss of friendships, noble idiocy - being the receiver of - from TW on more than one occasion, money trouble, class mates who treat him badly, except for TW because he only teases DH so that he can open his eyes to see how others treat him. He is using his hatred for TW as his driving force in his life, but such negativity will only drown him. Jang Dong Yoon is doing a great job at portraying DHs frustrations.
Eunho doesn't want to ride the bus. Huh^^~? I 'swoonder' why? I would also have a hang up with taking a bus, after TW tells me to call him 'oppa' before riding with him on his motorcycle.
Lol, I meant I would also 'not' want to take the bus and feed into my anxieties if I witnessed that bus blow up knowing I was the last one saved in the nick of time. Jovial, Kim Se Jeong, has restored my faith in the lovely, lively, likable female lead and I hope she will portray Eunho so well till the last scene!!!

But now that Daehwi is single and we're halfway though the mark, I'm super paranoid that Eunho will miraculously realize her feelings for Daehwi. Okay, first things first: kyaaaaaaaaa!!! ❤ How perfect that scene was? Tae-woon's frustration was building up the entire episode and then there she goes, smiling at him with that beautiful smile of hers, completely unaware of what is happening inside of his heart and mind. And Tae-woon himself... His expression, eyes and that line... I was swooning my heart out. I rewatched this scene so many times I can't count anymore. And the fact that some weeks before Kim Jung-hyun did the exactly the same thing (covered her from the rain) makes all of this even better, just as if writer-nim included this scene on purpose ? I'm in a total fangirl mode and I believe it's going to stay that way until Monday.
Besides fangirl gibberish though, I love that boys are closer to reconciling, even if it's just one tiny step. It's clear that they still care for each other, and I want some happiness for Dae-hwi. He needs it, especially now, after what happened with Nam-joo (maybe they'll make up too? Though I don't see a lot of feeling between them...)
Overall, this week's episodes were amazing. They delivered laughs, tears and a heart attack - in my book it's a perfect combination.

I'm really into this show. I loved how Eun-ho was not embarrassed by her dad, which gave Dae-whi and Nam-Joe something to think about; Nam-joo's dad seems really nice, while Dae-whi's mom needs some parenting lessons. I truly hope our boys can patch things up and it seems like Eun-ho's eternal optimism might just be the catalyst they need. I just don't want her to lose Sa-rang in the process. And seriously, why did they even introduce the idol into the story when Sa-rang looks so good with Kyung-woo? Though I am seriously worried about Bora who looks like someone who is on the verge of suicide. And I didn't really care about Dae-whi and Nam-Joo breaking up; it never seemed like they were on the same page anyway. Dae-whi commented that he liked what she had, maybe thinking she was rich, but I think he would have let go of the fact that she lied if she had just come clean. But whatever. I'm holding my breath til next week over the almost kiss.?
Side note: I find it funny that Kim Jung-hyun is playing a teenager and yet is 6 months older than Han Sunhwa who is playing a cop. But he does make an excellent teenage rebel. ?

The interaction between Eun Ho and Tae Won is just too sweet, I might have diabetes by the end of the finale. I'm so torn, I really want them to kiss but I don't want them to be awkward around each other. I'm really loving their bickering.
I'm glad that Dae Hwi finds out the truth about Nam Joo's family condition. Because hey a relationship based on lies are just a recipe for disaster. It surprised me when Dae Hwi confessed to liking Nam Joo a lot, because Dae Hwi doesn't act like a man in love around Nam Joo. But I do like them both, so I hope they resolve their problems.
I would be sad too if I were Sa Rang, when your best friend suddenly forgets you beacause of a man is just sad. So, Sa Rang and Kyung Woo? I ship it! And where is that idol kid huh, haven't seen him yet...

This was the best episode thus far. A necessary reprieve from all the downer stuff we've gotten thus far. Really loved that flashback with the three-musketeers on the hilltop parking lot. Gives me a bit of hope for Tae-woon and Dae-hwi mending things.
Why am I getting the feeling that I'm the only one who dislikes Eun-ho? I feel like 75% of what we ever see her do is be complacent while complaining.
What's gotten me this far in the show is Tae-woon and Teacher Sim. Now I can add Dae-hwi and Kyung-woo + Sa-rang to that very small list. I also just want Tae-woon to be happy, so if it's Eun-ho, it's Eun-ho.

She gets plenty of demerits (and I know that system is horribly skewed), but what has she done to get merit points? Nothing. I'm hoping that seeing her dad working in the street to pay for her summer school might spark something in her.

This might just be me, but I'll take it a step further and say that her character lacks depth especially when many we get more to go off of from Dae-hwi and Tae-woon. I probably missed it or forgot, but what is her the drive behind her wanting to be an artist and get into that university? I guess the one interesting thing about her character is that like some people in real life who survive near death experiences, the think they have a new lease on life, but it's not as new as they might think.

I wish they were clearer about her motivations too. In the first episode, they tried to make it like a "she has a crush on an oppa who goes to that university" situation which really annoyed me. Thinking back, I'm still annoyed because EunHo is actually really awesome and doing it for a guy doesn't feel like Eun-Ho. I also wish we'd know more about her near death experience and how it affected her.

I think she used that guy, her sunbae, Kang Min Hyuk's character...JongGeun?, as a scapegoat as a way for her not to admit her true feeling so soon.
For example she uses the story of dating a guy at Hanguk University to appease her friend, Sarang, as motivation. As Sarang, her primary confidant at that point, has her own similar dreams: Issue, her ideal guy, and a career set in civil service.
Also Eunho's career is spurred on by DaeHwi, who informs her that her dreams could come true with the Webtoon info at Hanguk University. DaeHwi is smart but why would he know such an interesting fact about a university that he is not interested in attending anyway. Is it not that the 3 boys had inquired the year before and because TaeWoon was maybe considering something in art, that DaeHwi would even know something so trivial off hand. Lol, I am reading too much in to it!
But this is also why he TaeWoon mocks her idealism in her sketchbook at first, about her dream of dating at Hanguk University. Later when she starts sketching about a superhero named X, he is pleased that Teacher Gu takes her sketchbook because he may not have wanted her to be involved, especially with one of the X imposters.

As a person who was studying art I can tell she is quite hard working and driven by some "stupid" but very intense motivation. An artist has to have a muse in his/her life to progress and follow his/her dreams. We are reading a lot and socialize and observe. I had to force myself to studying for midterms and final exams because I didn't have the time - after high school classes there was so much to do - reading, writing short stories and poems, going to art classes, developing photos in the dark room, making sport, going to jazz concerts, watching classic and indie movies, participating in exhibition, helping my grandmother in the farm during weekends, helping mom in her shop, etc. Without much studying I was excellent in lots of subjects and the other ones it was stressful to study it during breaks and on the way to school but I wasn’t the worst and B was enough for me, sometimes I got C but life has more important things that marks. I had about 6 to 10 classmates who were like Dae hwi always studying and the best in the class. I respected them and lot of times I tried to do like them but it didn’t last long. Sometimes in the difficult times I have still nightmares about tests and exams but I don’t regret my happy high school and college days.

A little late to this conversation, but now that you mention it, it reminds me of an impression about Eunho I formed in the first quarter.
I think she's difficult to root for in the sense of the "average student trying to achieve her dream as an artist and get into a good university against the odds" side of her character for the reasons you mentioned.
But to me she's much more likeable and convincing in her capacity as a friend to Taewoon and Daehwi—she tries to understand more than judge, she's easy-going and empathetic, and she's quick to forgive. So I'm glad that the more recent episodes are focusing on this.

I actually like Kim Sejeong's portrayal of Eunho.
I am glad that for once an actress isn't 'looking into the camera', it is not really making the mistake of looking into the lenses. But rather she is leading well, and isn't looking at the PDnim or her costars to hold her hand.
I felt like I could feel the nerves of some young actresses in lead 'youth' roles. And often the heroine we love in the beginning becomes a bag of nerves probably due to ratings.
However it is though the whole cast and crew are not concerned with ratings and are rather focusing on perhaps becoming coherent as we head toward the end.
Hopefully the heart of the show will increase ratings but that is not affecting any of the performances for me at least.

Is it always the ratings the factor if a drama deemed as a flop? Coz its funny how all two/three main characters of this drama are always on top10 most talked about on naver drama character weekly search ranking and also School 2017 always on top 5 weekly drama rank.

I've been looking forward to the boys reconciling with Eunho playing a big part since a few episodes back.
I thought Daehwi's angst about feeling guilty and ashamed would be stretched out longer, but I'm glad it was sooner. And now we can anticipate his tiny steps toward Taewoon. I just want him to have close friends and not be lonely ! That scene when he found out his mother took his money broke my heart. What a shameless mother !
Thanks chocolatte, I like your comments, too. It has great analysis which I agree. :)

Last week's episodes make me hooked with this show but this week's episodes just sealed my love for this one cute fluff. OMG the romance are the cutest (also, the fact that they re-act the last scene based on the unvolunteer reflex from behind the scene is beyond ADORBS) and they storylines are poignant and stay true with the spirit of School series. I'm so ready for this show to take me anywhere. Bring it in, Show!

The conflict between Teacher Shim and Officer Han is too real. This is the line all adults (whether parents or teachers) must toe with the kids they love. To fight kids battles for them makes them weak, spoiled, entitled, and ultimately unable to cope with adulthood. And yet to go to the other extreme and fail to provide a safety net for them as they make mistakes is to leave them open to potential disaster. It's such a struggle to know what's best, and most adults err too far one one side or the other.

There were so many things I liked this episode:
-daehwi getting worried for tae coupon tripping on the roof edge and going "that's dangerous" despite his supposed indifference
-daehwi taking responsibility and being honest to namjoo about his stress/pressures
-the convenience store date
-tae coupon getting jealous over eunho and daehwi's bingsu plans
-tae coupon trying to shudder away a montage of his other jealous moments
-teacher shim clearly trying not to give up his drinks despite tae coupon clearly begging for one with his eyes (but then he ends up giving it anyway)
-the older teacher joining in on the impromptu romance talk - to the point he made tae coupon realise he likes eunho
-eunho caring for her dad w/o caring that the others were watching, like daehwi said
-tae coupon going crazy enough over chicken coupons enough for me to call him tae coupon
-the number of times eunho called him a weirdo/the way she said it

I like how you have commemorated episode 8 with TaeWoon's new mononym of Taecoupon. So when I need to see Eunho dish, the coupons that is, it out to TaeWoon I can simply remember my newmonic, new-mnemonic, EHD8TC, read in full as Eunho dates (from the first letter of dish and the numeral '8') Taecoupon. Lol, an incomplete mnemonic just like I used to make up on school and just pass!!!

I enjoyed reading all the comments... to whoever coined 'Tae Coupon', that was perfect. I am still laughing at his 'I HAVE TEN COUPONS MWAHAHA!'
Now I will be the little grey cloud in all this sea of swooning: as much as I am on board the main ship, I felt like there was too much pairing up going on this episode. Gym Teacher suddenly decided he liked Officer Han too. Guitar Boy and Sa-Rang (which is really cute btw). But any moment I expected Strawberry Milk to find his Banana Milk Girl. I hope I don't sound bipolar here, but as much as I love Eun Ho & Tae Woon, I don't want an excessive focus on romance. It would basically become a rom-com that uses high school as an excuse. There's already little studying going on as it is.
So, I want the kiss, but I don't want it. Does that make any sense?

BANANA MILK GIRL. What have you done to me, now I am longing for something that probably won't happen :'(
And I know what you mean. The interactions between Taewoon and Eunho are my crack, and I'm already in love with Kyungwoo x Sarang, but I hope the story continues to focus on the struggles of the students with romance only being part of a larger picture.

Is it because I'm American that my first idea was that Eun Ho and Tae Woon should lie about why they were in the teacher's office and say they wanted an 'exciting' place to kiss? (My best friend was a little wild - so I can definetinaly picture her doing something like that.)

Taewoon reminds me of my fiance. He was my college classmate and he used to tease me a lot that we were like cats and dogs when we see each other. I used to think this guy must really hate me so i started hating him although i thought he was cute the first time i met him. I just forgot my physical attraction because i hated how he would annoy me everyday... then suddenly he just confessed and i thought he was just joking... there's no way. Turns out he was serious and he really pursued me. Now he is just the sweetest as a bf so i keep remembering the old days and laugh at how different he treats me now... he is such a gentleman to me now... the 360 degrees change is hilarious so this drama is relatable for me.

Oh, that's so great! A Replay series in real life :-D (I would love to transfer this School 2017 into the Replay series afterwards. ) But wait! If it's like that - that boys are teasing girls they like - I was quite popular then ;-), but I've had eyes just for one guy from another school (a karate prodigy), so there was no way I could see the interest of others. I think it's the same for Eun-ho...

It shows when Dae Hwi and Nam Joo stare at each other, we could listen Dae Hwi's phone call to the transportation company which Nam Joo claimed to be her father's company. The secretary said that our CEO doesn't have a daughter. And it was back then when Dae Hwi took a bus, sat next to Nam Joo and he said about his current research on the company.

Yeah, thanks hannaehh!!!
I thought why was DaeHwi acting like that in the bus. Being a well written character I see how smart DH really is.
So he tested Nam Joo, by how he acted and what he said in the bus. And that is what drove his own conscience to come totally clean about the evening that Eunho and TaeWoon were in the teachers office, even about taking the math competition when that was not even brought up.
I think DaeHwi wanted to tell NamJoo about how guilty he was feeling about Eunho and TaeWoon being accused, but he couldn't because he wanted NJ to tell him the truth first about NJ not being a CEO's daughter etc, to see if he could trust her and if she really loved him for him. And that was why DH waited to their 200 day anniversary. Awww so sweet, DaeHwi why are you starting to break my heart so much now???

Such a cute episode. I know they like to put lots of drama and conflict into a show, but sometimes the little things, like Taewoon ordering chicken galore just to see his cute classmate.
I also teared up a bit at Eun Ho's father telling her that he wanted her to always walk on flowery roads. It parallels Sejeong's real life story of how she wants her Mother to walk the flower road, and the song she sang (and won an award as well) earlier this year.
