School 2017: Episode 6

I love this show most when it shines a spotlight on the relationships that define our students’ lives—from new and budding friendships to the relationships with a more complicated past, our main trio is navigating all the intense highs and lows that come with being eighteen, and it’s a treat to watch. Though the “mystery” of Suspect X still looms over the campus, I don’t mind that it’s taking us some time to unravel the story, as I’m content to continue hanging out with our characters as they try to figure out what high school is all about.

EPISODE 6 RECAP

As Eun-ho follows the hooded figure inside the school building, we see that Teacher Shim’s somewhere in the building as well, locking up a room. He jumps about a mile when a bright light suddenly shines on his face, but it’s only Officer Han, wielding a flashlight. She comments on Teacher Shim’s good timing, then invites him to do a final patrol of school grounds with her.

Eun-ho creeps into the teachers’ office and sees Suspect X at the other end of the room. When X turns around, clutching a stuffed envelope, he pauses—then makes a run for it.

Eun-ho chases him outside, and the two run past Tae-woon, who’s wandering nearby. He makes a move to follow them, but he ends up hanging back and just watching.

In the middle of her pursuit, Eun-ho trips and falls, yelping in pain. Elsewhere on campus, Officer Han’s ears perk up at Eun-ho’s cry, and she and Teacher Shim head toward the noise.

Eun-ho continues running after X, but takes a shortcut that lands her squarely in the path of the culprit. They narrowly miss bumping into one other, and X drops his envelope in shock.

When the two face each other, Eun-ho’s mouth drops open as she registers that it’s Dae-hwi underneath the hoodie, and Dae-hwi looks equally out of sorts to see Eun-ho standing in front of him.

Without a word, Dae-hwi takes off. Eun-ho tries to run after him, but Tae-woon pops out of nowhere and holds her back, telling her to stop getting involved in others’ affairs. Seeing Eun-ho’s hesitation, Tae-woon asks who it was, but Eun-ho lies that she didn’t see his face.

Tae-woon picks up the envelope that Dae-hwi dropped, and both he and Eun-ho are stunned when they realize it contains answers to the upcoming math competition.

Cut to: Eun-ho nervously standing guard at the door to the teachers’ office while Tae-woon stealthily returns the test answers to their original spot. He’s not quite done when Eun-ho spots lights from Officer Han and Teacher Shim’s flashlights in the hall, and she rushes to tell Tae-woon that someone’s coming.

In a panic, Eun-ho hides herself behind a desk, but cringes when she realizes that she’s left the office door open—a detail that catches Teacher Shim’s eye.

Teacher Shim zeroes in on the door and enters the office quietly. When Tae-woon joins Eun-ho behind the desk, she hisses at him loudly that it’s their teacher, and asks what they should do. Tae-woon shushes her, but the damage is done—judging by the way Teacher Shim’s eyes widen, he’s definitely heard (and seen?) something.

Teacher Shim looks back and forth between the students and the door, where Officer Han is rapidly approaching. When she appears, he blocks her from entering by blurting out, “Do you want to eat ramyun?” Pfft.

Officer Han ignores him and attempts to look around the office, but Teacher Shim holds her back again, this time asking her to a movie. As Officer Han tries to process what’s happening, Tae-woon and Eun-ho slowly make their way out… until Eun-ho bumps into Tae-woon, causing him to tumble onto the floor. Smooth, guys.

Officer Han whips around at the sound, but Teacher Shim thinks quickly and grabs her, whirls her around, then declares, “I like you.” HA.

Tae-woon and Eun-ho use that moment to finally slip out, but not before shutting the door just loudly enough to catch Officer Han’s ear again.

Officer Han shines her flashlight all over the room, but much to Teacher Shim’s relief, no one is there. She turns to give Teacher Shim a look and needles him about his conveniently timed confession, wondering if she should report him or not. All Teacher Shim can do in response is give a loud, awkward laugh.

Dae-hwi stops and catches his breath somewhere on campus, thinking back to his run-in with Eun-ho. Meanwhile, Tae-woon and Eun-ho scamper away from the school building, huddling close as they make sure the coast is clear. In the midst of this, the two have an adorable moment when they realize just how close they are—they stare at each other for a beat, then pop up awkwardly, clearing their throats.

Tae-woon asks Eun-ho again about the hooded figure’s identity, but Eun-ho insists she saw nothing. When she says he must be a copycat, Tae-woon muses that he could also be someone who really needs the answers to the math competition.

Teacher Shim checks the teachers’ office to make sure nothing is out of place. He opens up a student directory and looks over the photos of his class, sure that he heard the culprits saying that their teacher just walked in.

At home, Eun-ho tosses and turns, unable to stop wondering why Dae-hwi would do what he did. Dae-hwi’s up too, studying as usual, until something leads him to jump up to dig through the pockets of his hoodie, then his pants. (Ooh, did he lose his master key?) He looks through his desk drawers too, but doesn’t find what he’s looking for.

That’s because his keys are with Tae-woon, who’d found them on the ground just after Dae-hwi and Eun-ho ran past him during their chase—and it seems Tae-woon knows exactly who the keys belong to.

The next morning, Tae-woon finds Dae-hwi searching for his keys and drops them by Dae-hwi’s foot. Tae-woon tries to get under his skin as usual, smirking while Dae-hwi tries hard to keep his anger in check.

When Dae-hwi tells Tae-woon to go ahead and report him if he wants, Tae-woon retorts that he doesn’t care enough about Dae-hwi to even bother. (Except, I don’t believe you.) Dae-hwi just tells Tae-woon to stay out of his life, calling his presence disgusting, and Tae-woon’s smirk fades.

In class, Dae-hwi avoids Eun-ho’s concerned gaze, while Tae-woon watches the two of them, looking annoyed. Sometime later, Dae-hwi runs into Eun-ho and Sa-rang in the hall and asks Eun-ho if they can chat.

This raises Sa-rang’s suspicions, so Eun-ho makes up an excuse and says that Dae-hwi wants to enter a competition with her. And in the background, Tae-woon walks out of the classroom just in time to hear this, and he glances over at the trio before moving on.

When Nam-joo joins the conversation with a pointed question about the competition, Dae-hwi explains that he’s the one who’s entering, but Eun-ho’s helping him on the drawing portion. Eun-ho masks her discomfort at this whole story by laughing awkwardly, then makes her escape, telling Dae-hwi they’ll talk later.

Nam-joo asks Dae-hwi where he’s planning on meeting Eun-ho, clearly unhappy that the two are planning to hang out alone. As Dae-hwi watches Eun-ho walk away, his expression stone-cold, he tells Nam-joo that it’s nothing for her to be bothered about.

Eun-ho walks right by Tae-woon as she’s on the phone with Dae-hwi, making plans to meet up at a nearby café. Tae-woon interrupts to tell her not to meet with Dae-hwi, repeating that she should mind her own business. But Eun-ho brushes him off, telling him that prepping for a competition is her business.

At the café, Eun-ho and Dae-hwi both seem nervous as they settle into their seats. Eun-ho starts off by telling Dae-hwi that she was thankful for his support and trust when she was framed for Suspect X’s actions—she knows he’s the only one who wrote that petition for her.

Eun-ho then says that she believes Dae-hwi had his reasons for what happened yesterday. “At least, that’s the Song Dae-hwi that I know,” she says. Looking relieved, Dae-hwi thanks her, and says that he was worried about how he’d explain things to her.

Eun-ho tells Dae-hwi to explain when he’s ready—though the truth may not be easy, she says she can handle it. She adds in a quiet voice that she returned the envelope with the answers, which earns her a grateful look from Dae-hwi and another sincere round of thanks.

Just then, Eun-ho’s phone rings with a call from Tae-woon, and Dae-hwi takes note. She hastily flips her phone over without answering, while Tae-woon waits outside the café, looking disgruntled.

When Dae-hwi and Eun-ho eventually walk outside, Tae-woon heads directly to Dae-hwi to ask if he’d tried to keep Eun-ho quiet. “Did you want to hide your two-faced nature that badly?” he snarls.

Eun-ho tries to quell the tension between the boys, but Dae-hwi just looks pointedly at Eun-ho and says that he’s dying to know the reason why Tae-woon’s getting so involved in other people’s business. Tae-woon doesn’t bother to contradict Dae-hwi, telling him to stop irritating him if he’s caught on to the reason.

Dae-hwi tells Tae-woon again to stop intervening in his life, but Tae-woon says that he’s mistaken. “I don’t care what kind of pathetic life you live,” he says. “I don’t care about you since then.” With that, Tae-woon grabs Eun-ho to lead her away, telling her he has something to say.

When they’re alone, Eun-ho calls Tae-woon out for knowing (the second) X’s identity all along. Tae-woon just tells Eun-ho not to hang out with Dae-hwi anymore, and when Eun-ho defends Dae-hwi, Tae-woon angrily tells her to stop caring about other people’s business—no one does that anymore.

But Eun-ho interjects, “Your friend. Your friend saved me.” And Tae-woon can’t say anything to that.

Back at home, Dae-hwi reads through his student evaluation, which sings his praises for being an upright and honest student. As tears well up in his eyes, he crosses out the comments and writes instead that he’s “cowardly and sly,” and that he does whatever it takes to get what he wants.

Two fans run up to idol-turned-student Issue, leaving him with presents for other members of his idol group. Sa-rang corners him next (calling him “oppa,” ha) and gifts him an embroidered pillow. But Issue returns the pillow to her, telling her he feels burdened, and asks her not to call him oppa, either. Sa-rang looks crestfallen, and Teacher Jung only adds insult to injury by taking her pillow to help with his hemorrhoids, lol.

Nam-joo runs outside to greet her father, who’s pulled up near the school’s entrance. He sweetly drops off some pastries for her, but she looks anything but happy to see him. When she hears Dae-hwi calling her name, she immediately tosses the pastries back into the car and straightens up, looking nervous.

Ah, it looks like Nam-joo’s dad isn’t driving just any car—he’s driving a cab. When Dae-hwi assumes that Nam-joo’s about to get in to go somewhere, she doesn’t correct him, and he insists on riding with her.

Inside the cab, Dae-hwi notices the name of the cab company on the driver ID tag and points out that the cab must be her dad’s, scaring both Dad and Nam-joo half to death. When Dae-hwi clarifies that he meant the cab company is her dad’s, Nam-joo breathes a sigh of relief, and Dae-hwi sighs at how lucky she is to have a well-off dad. If you only knew!

That night, Eun-ho’s dad makes a chicken delivery to Nam-joo’s apartment, where Nam-joo opens the door surrounded by her three younger siblings. As he’s leaving, Eun-ho’s dad wonders if one chicken will be enough to feed all the kids.

The next day at school, Hee-chan mentions to Dae-hwi that he must be upset about the math competition. Dae-hwi surprises Hee-chan by saying he’s going to enter anyway, and Hee-chan tells him to go ahead and give it a try, in a not-too-sincere way.

Tae-woon watches the exchange from nearby, then says, “How pathetic,” loudly enough for Dae-hwi to hear. Looking straight at his old friend, Tae-woon guzzles his soda and bangs it back down on the table.

This is apparently a move that Tae-woon used to do frequently in the past with Dae-hwi and Joon-ki, as we see a flashback of the three boys gathered at Joon-ki’s family restaurant after hours to celebrate Dae-hwi’s birthday.

When Tae-woon nonchalantly handed Dae-hwi a new tablet for the occasion, Dae-hwi somberly remarked that he’s always the one receiving. But Joon-ki said that’s the way it should be: the guy with more gives, the guy with less receives, the good-looking one gets the girls, and the funny one sets the mood. When Dae-hwi cracked that he must be the one to get all the girls, the other two playfully piled onto the birthday boy.

Back in the present, Sa-rang’s mom overhears Teacher Shim counseling a student on college applications, and asks him about Sa-rang. Choking up, Mom says that even though Sa-rang seems set on a civil service career, she could still go to college and pursue her dreams. She pleads with Teacher Shim to help her.

Over snacks, Eun-ho asks Sa-rang about her dreams. Sa-rang says she doesn’t have one—she’s never really thought about anything other than helping out her mom. When Eun-ho says she feels guilty about pursuing her expensive dream to be an artist given her family’s finances, Sa-rang sighs at the fact that poor students have to apologize for simply having dreams.

Teacher Shim is shocked when one of his students returns his evaluation completely rewritten by a professional consultant, even though it’s supposed to be written by the teacher. The student asks Teacher Shim not to change a word, quipping that the teacher couldn’t possibly do better than the consultant.

The always unhelpful Teacher Jang tells Teacher Shim that it’s common for kids to use consultants these days, but Teacher Shim’s says it’s not right, looking distressed. On his way out, he stops by Teacher Gu’s desk and asks him for a favor.

They go drinking at a pojangmacha, where Teacher Shim unloads his frustrations to the older teacher. Teacher Shim talks about how inadequate he feels as a teacher, and how worrying it is to see his students’ lives already being decided by money.

Teacher Gu seems to be a bit drunk, as he thunders that it doesn’t matter, since they can’t change a thing. He mentions that when he was younger, he thought he could change students’ lives—but he couldn’t. When Teacher Shim says they should still try to teach their students what’s right and wrong, Teacher Gu says they aren’t teachers, since they don’t have anyone who follows them.

That night, Teacher Shim burns the midnight oil, diligently writing out evaluations for each of his students.

Eun-ho’s enjoying some of her dad’s home cooking when her brother interrupts with a copy of her student evaluation, gasping at how empty it is. Shooting nervous looks at her parents, Eun-ho downplays her situation, telling them she’ll fill up the evaluation somehow.

But clearly, Eun-ho’s mom is worried—worried enough to attend a parent meeting on student evaluations at school. She has a hard time finding a seat among all of the wealthy parents in attendance, and looks overwhelmed at the information being thrown at her.

At a coffee meeting with fellow moms afterward, Eun-ho’s mom listens as others suggest different ways to beef up their kids’ records. Eun-ho’s mom naively asks the group why a high school student would need to do all this, earning her condescending looks from the other moms.

Later, Eun-ho’s mom laments to her husband that it’s the parents who get their kids into college. She worries about Eun-ho’s future, saying that she didn’t understand anything from the meeting she attended, and wonders how they can help Eun-ho out.

The school steering committee calls in Teacher Shim with a new demand: They want to see their children’s evaluations, having heard that Teacher Shim is rewriting all the professionally written evaluations. Teacher Shim tells the group he took the “expert” content under consideration when writing the evaluations, but the parents won’t let up on their demands. But Teacher Shim defiantly says that he’ll be sticking to the rules, and the evaluations will remain inaccessible to parents.

Teacher Shim heads outside to cool off and joins Tae-woon for a round of hoops. When he asks Tae-woon how things are going, Tae-woon answers that he’s eighteen, so obviously life’s pretty terrible. Teacher Shim tells him that it’s better than life sucking at age twenty-eight, and says that Tae-woon’s doing well.

Looking startled, Tae-woon tells Teacher Shim that it’s the first time anyone has told him he’s doing well. Teacher Shim honestly says that Tae-woon’s doing better than him, ha.

The principal calls Teacher Shim back and tries to cajole him into giving the parents what they want. When that doesn’t work, Principal Yang threatens to fire him for not falling in line.

Just outside the principal’s office, Tae-woon lingers, listening in on the conversation.

Tae-woon stops Eun-ho in the hall and asks if she’s free that night. She gets a bit shy at the mention of getting together at night, and Tae-woon can’t resist teasing her, telling her that it’s for business, so she shouldn’t get too excited. Eun-ho initially tells him she has no time for him, but then can’t help herself from trailing after him, asking what he’s got in mind.

That evening, another hooded figure walks the campus, heading somewhere purposefully. Is this a third X?

Officer Han scares Teacher Shim at his desk again, this time by dangling a key in his face—she’s finally found a key to the warehouse, which she’s convinced is X’s hideout.

Teacher Shim tries his best to deter Officer Han from heading over to the warehouse, even going as far as faking a cramp as they approach the building. Officer Han just ignores him and heads up the stairs.

Meanwhile, in his hideout, Tae-woon looks up suspiciously, as if he hears something. Yikes!

With a finger over her lips, Officer Han unlocks the door and pushes it open. And at that moment, Tae-woon turns to look behind him.

But when Officer Han walks in, the warehouse is back to being a warehouse, with no trace of Tae-woon or his things. As Officer Han surveys the interior in disappointment, Tae-woon settles back into his hideout—which is now located in a different space.

Officer Han tells Teacher Shim that X must have caught wind of their search. Looking directly at the teacher, she asks, “I wonder how X knew to run away?”

Flashback to sometime earlier, when Teacher Shim warned his class to be careful and not go into strange places, since the school was searching for X’s hideout on campus. Aw, he’s the best.

In the present, Officer Han leans down to pick up a stray propeller on the ground—one that looks like it would belong on a black drone. Officer Han remarks that X is sparking her competitive spirit, while Teacher Shim gives her his best “I know nothing” face.

Tae-woon perks up when he hears the squeak of the door close to the warehouse, indicating the adults’ departure. He slowly opens his door, revealing his new hideout to be just underneath his old one.

Rewind back to a day ago, where we see Eun-ho hard at work, helping Tae-woon pack up his old hideout. Tae-woon made Eun-ho do all the heavy lifting (watching her with a smile, of course), in exchange for promising to mess up the upcoming competition. As they pack, Eun-ho muses that they would have really been dead if not for Teacher Shim.

The next day, Principal Yang is in the middle of appeasing his steering committee members when the vice principal races in with the news that someone’s posted the student evaluations publicly.

The adults rush over to find students gawking over the evaluations, which are posted outside of Teacher Shim’s classroom. One of the students marvels that Teacher Shim must be a stalker, given the details he’s been able to include in their documents—and from the comments we see, it’s clear that he knows each student very, very well.

In fact, Teacher Shim’s found a way to turn each students’ quirks and weaknesses into strengths: He writes that bully Young-gun has a “strong sense of individuality, responsibility, and leadership,” while combative Bit-na is lauded for her “excellent debating skills.”

Dae-hwi is an excellent student whose “dedication and hard work are unrivaled,” while Tae-woon’s described as “constantly practicing self-reflection” and full of potential. Teacher Shim writes that Eun-ho has a “pure and positive energy” that she uses to fight discrimination, and that her hard work will likely help her achieve her dreams.

As the students bask in the warm words of Teacher Shim, Principal Yang freaks out about the breach in policy. Vice Principal Park and Teacher Gu quietly give him more bad news: The student evaluations were accessed by only one ID the night before—Principal Yang’s. Principal Yang demands that they catch the culprit who used his ID, but Vice Principal Park is unsure if that means he should apprehend the principal himself, heh.

Amidst the chaos, Tae-woon and Eun-ho glance at one another from across the hall, exchanging tiny smiles and thumbs up. Ha, are they partners in crime now?

Later, Tae-woon sits in his hideout, a list of the school competitions on his screen and the answers to the math competition in front of him. As he remembers both Eun-ho and Dae-hwi being slighted by these fixed competitions, he focuses on the answer sheet.

The class is unusually quiet when Teacher Shim appears before them, but then they burst into applause, which Teacher Shim accepts with a grin. Just then, everyone in the class gets a text message with a hidden video recording of Tae-woon in Principal Yang’s office, being assured by the administrator that he’ll take first place in the math competition.

Eun-ho looks back at Tae-woon in shock, and he flashes her a little peace sign, letting her know he was behind it. But as their classmates watch the video, they start to look accusingly at Tae-woon, understanding now that the competition was fixed in his favor.

With all eyes on him, Tae-woon slams his desk in anger, then stands up to face his classmates. Looking around the room, he yells out, “What are you staring at, you punks?”

Most students drop their gazes, with the exception of Eun-ho, who looks at Tae-woon worriedly, and Dae-hwi, who glares angrily at his former friend.

COMMENTS

I know Tae-woon planned the whole hidden camera video reveal, but that angry/hurt look on his face at the end—ahh, it breaks my heart, how sensitive he is about his identity as Director Hyun’s son, and how others perceive him. I’m not sure where this next “prank” is going, but at least he’s not alone in this anymore—Eun-ho’s now fully in the know, even if she may not be actively involved in the execution of these activities. Though I wasn’t quite expecting that she’d encourage him to continue as X, I do find it interesting that Eun-ho’s influence has led to Tae-woon putting his pranking skills to work in support of justice (rather than, say, because he’s bored). I’m really enjoying watching these two grow closer and start to lean on one another—the actors have such great chemistry, and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t on this ship by now.

Dae-hwi continues to be a fascinating character, even though I still find him tough to read. I can almost feel the stress that he’s under coming through the screen, and I hate that he has almost no real support system in his life (because Nam-joo definitely doesn’t count). But I’m also starting to see Dae-hwi’s “two faces” that’s been mentioned before—there’s the polished, kind version of Dae-hwi who buys Eun-ho the water bottle just because he saw her playing with it, and there’s the colder, dispassionate version who can then just turn around and use her to bait Tae-woon. This makes me wonder about Dae-hwi’s attempt at being X—was it a copycat attempt born out of desperation, or has he done this before? Maybe running around campus as X was something Dae-hwi and Tae-woon (and Joon-ki?) did together, back when they were best friends? So many possibilities.

Aside from the usual antics of our main trio, I’m glad that the we got to spend some time this week with the adult figures in our students’ lives, especially their parents. If the last episode showed us how parents can hurt their kids in the name of “protecting” them, this one focused on the heartbreaking struggles that parents go through themselves to try to carve out a better life for their children. Eun-ho’s mom and Sa-rang’s mom both moved me with their efforts to navigate a world that they know nothing about. And it was hard to see Nam-joo’s dad, so cheery and loving toward his daughter, basically being treated as if he were a stranger by Nam-joo just because he doesn’t fit into this narrative that she’s created for her life. What the three girls lack in financial resources, it seems that they make up for it with love from their families, and to me, that’s a much better place to be.

Unlike last week, the other adult storyline that really landed with me this episode was Teacher Shim’s. I appreciate that Teacher Shim’s first instinct is always to protect his students, even when he doesn’t know who they are, as is the case with Suspect X. And I loved everything about the sequence where we got to read the evaluations he wrote for each student, and watch the students’ reactions as they read it for themselves. What made Teacher Shim’s comments so powerful wasn’t that they were just positive—but rather, it was the specificity of his words that had the greatest impact. With every comment, it was as if Teacher Shim was letting his students know that he sees them—he sees them for who they are now, and for who they can be in the future. It was a beautiful moment, and one that made me glad that if nothing else, at least these kids have Teacher Shim on their side.

I don't get why Dae-hwi is taking out his anger on Tae-woon. They were supposed to have been best friends. Why does he think that Tae-woon is hiding behind his dad? Did he really know so little about him when they were friends? I thought he should have been more understanding toward Tae-woon because not only was he in the accident, he also went through the loss of his best friend. Obviously Tae-woon would have gone through shock at the time of the accident...so I think Dae-hwi should have stuck with him to find out what exactly happened..instead of blaming it on him for hiding behind his dad's back...

That's my question too. How long they have been best friends before that accident happened, that he doesn't seem to understand TW? His look at the end didn't give a good sign though

I can't really connect with his character because he is too complicated, me myself is not a complicated person and the ppl around me are also not that complicated. So it is sure some new discovery for me and I'll give him the chance to show more about himself. I could say he is kind of selfish and pretentious, but I won't conclude it like that now and will see him in more epi. He has a richer character than the other main leads, so let's see what kind of complicated things inside his brain & heart.

Yeah, I agree that he seems a bit complicated than the rest. I think that's mostly due to him pushing himself harder than everyone else. He's got his mum to worry about (instead of her worrying about him), he's thinking about his studies, his future, how to get into college without paying tuition fees, his part-time job doing assignments for Hae-chul (UGH), and thinking about his best friend's death..
He's almost at a breaking point now...

But I think if he had only talked to Tae-woon after the accident...maybe things would have been different?

Lack of communication is the biggest problem in kdramaland and it will be forever. lol. I think the problem here because both are keeping everything they want to talk to each other inside, instead of talking it out loud. These two relationship is what a hero-heroine always have in some other drama which then resulted in some noble idiocy.

9

I'm glad that's not happening with our leads though!

2

Agreed with @seralovestteobokki that the lack of communication between the two is the biggest problem that made them drifted apart.

And also, I think Dae-hwi is the type of person that set a super high standard for himself, whether academically or in real life. Maybe subconsciously, he wanted Tae-woon as his best friend to do things or react the same way when they lost Joon-gi and saw he was being blamed for everything. Yes, it's not rational. But he was grief-stricken at the time and maybe wanted someone else to be there and took his burden. In his mind, Tae-woon as the director's son would look like someone who could do more about Joon-gi's situation and it must angered him when nothing happened and Joon-gi is forever labeled as the reckless delinquent who took others' lives.

5

I don't blame Daehwi as much. We've seen a lot of incidents from Taewoon's perspective, but Daehwi hasn't—he tried to call Taewoon, but Taewoon didn't (couldn't) pick up; he couldn't have known that Taewoon came to the funeral but left when he saw the envelope of money.

So to him, it must've looked like Taewoon was guilty and escaping from the situation. Then the next thing Daehwi knows is the media headlines, which he must have realised were manipulated by TW's dad because he knew about the money. So all this feeds into his belief that TW must've been at fault for the accident to make his dad cover it up this way. And then Taewoon comes storming into his classroom to hit him for not sending Joongki off one last time, when he has done nothing but be there for poor Joongki's grandma during the wake.

Plus, the whole setup of the situation feeds into Daehwi's sore spot already. Taewoon definitely had his reasons for not telling Daehwi the truth before they shut each other out—he was ashamed for what his dad did—but because they missed the timing to communicate, Daehwi is just left with a reinforcement of what he already realised about money and power, and how twisted a classed society is.

I agree with what you said about Tae-woon hitting Dae-hwi for not sending their friend off. He shouldn't have done that. Especially when he wasn't even at the funeral with Joonki's grandma. He obviously saw Dae-hwi with her so I don't think he had any right to hit him then. Especially when he's so closed off about the whole situation.

Your last point totally makes sense. Thanks for sharing it! I forgot that Dae hwi would put money and power together and realise those with more often escape responsibility for their actions. I guess this would have angered him and maybe even why he's taking it out on Tae-woon.

Yeah, and I think that flashback to them celebrating Daehwi's birthday was what helped me realise this was a recurrent hard truth for him, because he was so self-conscious about always being on the receiving end when it came to material things.

7

Ahhh yes there was the flashback! It said so much though! Maybe he's putting himself down because he can't do the same thing for his friend? And imagine thinking that thought over and over again. It would have been depressing, no matter what anyone says about people having more should give more...

2

Time is not an accurate indication as to the strength of a friendship. You can have a friend for 20 years and one misunderstood word is enough to destroy that bond.
Friends are not mind readers and on top of that people can change so it's not unfounded for Dae Hwi to misunderstand Tae-Woon's handling of the aftermath of their friend's death.
The lack of communication in the immediate aftermath is what caused their rift because Dae-Hwi didn't receive either answers or comfort from his surviving friend and Tae Woon felt too ashamed to lean on Dae Hwi for support after what his dad had done.

I hope that clears everything up. At first I didn't like Dae Hwi too. But after looking at things from HIS perspective, and not Tae Woon's, it really is understandable. Both of them are going through such a hard time. They lost each other that day, and I hope that they can reconcile their friendship.

I'm a goner too!

When he asked "Are you free tonight? " Eun Ho got shy then he continued to enjoy teasing her... ?

I was like, it is a big waste for them to be in a school drama. ? Mori sure has his own way to deliver his lines to sounds sexier than it it supposed to be, together with his eyes. I really appreciate if actors can be sexy without showing so much of his skin & abs (although I do love abs too).

Teacher Shim is fast becoming one of my favorite teacher in dramaland. He is just so earnest and always willing to see the best in people, often to the point of naivety. But we can also see how much he loves his students and how readily he accept them all, flaws and all. And watching that, I can't really begrudge him of his sunny optimism attitude while facing the harsh reality.

Agreed. His optimistic attitude is what's going to change some of his students' lives. I mean, who on earth would run however many laps around the oval just so their students stop betraying one another? It's almost crazy to think of and his students were so surprised when he actually did it. I'm so glad that at least one teacher in this school has a heart!

I think Teacher Shim & Tae Woon actually have started some collaboration. lol. I love their moments together. Teacher Shim in some ways remind me of Jang Nara's character in School 2013.

Teacher Shim reminds me of Yankumi of Gokusen! Yankumi is more of a badass teacher, though haha. He's the kind of teacher who really trusts and protects his students. They're the rare kinds of teachers nowadays.

The case is not that big for a cop's involvement though. I mean if it is just to search for store's key, a teacher can do that. It would have been better if she is a special guard, martial art teacher or anything like that which is hired to take care of school's safety and at the same time digging on the case. For now it seems she is only following Teacher Shim around lol. I consider it as a loophole in this drama unless if she is actually has some bigger purpose later.

I know Namjoo's behaviour doesn't come off very well, but I actually sympathise with her. She seems to have found herself with a mistaken image of being the dainty daughter of a well-off family because she's pretty and elegant—at least from what we can tell from Daehwi's comments. It's not really the same situation as say, Sarang or Eunho, whose family backgrounds have become known at some point. So it doesn't feel like she's actively hiding her own background, but just unable to reveal the truth without it escalating into some kind of drama.

I'm wondering where her character arc is headed, because I really hope that she and Daehwi can move towards a better understanding of each other. They are more similar than they each realise. It seems not many know about Daehwi's background (perhaps except Heechan), judging from his embarrassment and Eunho's surprise when she delivered chicken to his house.

I love the little moments the best—Grim Reaper teacher talking about his disillusionment, Teacher Shim being completely inept at covering up his cover-up acts, when you think Daehwi is going to snap back at Taewoon's jibe at the cafeteria, only to be jolted by a happy memory. And I think in the final scene, Daehwi realises that Taewoon is behind the video leak. There's a nuance in the expression that Jang Dong-yoon makes, like he's not purely angry but conflicted.

I also couldn't fully hate what Nam-joo did. Everything in her school come down to money and power. She might be pretty and smart, but having that "false" image must help a lot too. I can understand her reluctance to admit the truth about her family. I only hope that she will come clean soon to Dae-hwi because I can see those two being each other's savior. They need to band together and show their school what they miss by casting them aside for a more wealthy and powerful students.

My thoughts exactly! With reguards to DaeHwi and NamJoo. They're much more similar than they realise and if only NJ could come clean or rather if inly she hadnt been misunderstood initially. Then maybe DaeHwi may hv been able to see her as more relatable and then truly confided in her.

She obviously has feelings for him and they both seem hardworking - theyd probably be good support systems for each other.

I do too want to know how revealing hidden camera footage will impact our old best friends, both guys need to have a honest conversation about the past, about how they felt then and how the feel now. Why they said or did since the accident that caused the rift between them.
Looking forward to next week

School 2017 is upping up their game, and as a result we get a story full of hearts and touching character moments just like this eps. I was surprised watching how ellegant X's current prank is. Usually he becomes the hero only for students with his rebellious, rule-breaking acts. But with his latest trick, he managed to showcase Teacher Shim's earnestness and abundant of love for his students, settle the restlessness among his friends about their student evaluation, and even stop those nosy parents and the principal from doing everything their own way. Not to mention how he practically threw himself under the bus with his damning video to help Dae-hwi and show his friends what actually happened in their school. I never knew I can love Tae-woon more than I already am.

This eps also bring the important question about a teacher's role, which is something very relatable. With the current academical pressure for students, teacher seems to favor teaching more than educating. As a result, there are so many smart students. Though sadly, not that many students have a proper attitude, ethics, and respect anymore. It would be interesting to see how each teacher will react to this situation.

I have this feeling that Tae Woon is not the original X. He just assumed X's identity so that would be the reason why as if X's tactics suddenly changed. There are subtle clues regarding this especially when Eun Ho asked why he was acting as Suspect X.

And Dae Hwi. There was a scene when Eun Ho asked him if he had seen her drawings before.. and I became suspicious of that since the original X had Eun Ho's sketchbook before.

Or I'm overthinking again lol

Maybe it is Kyung Woo as the original X, that is why he covered for TW that time. But TW only carried on where KW is too busy cutting class and acting like a solo guitarist to care much about the state of the school. I wouldn't be surprised if KW acts as a look-out for TW, when KW actually shows up to class because he is only in school when pranks go off. Like he gets a kick out of TW's superhero image.

No, you're definitely on to something. Both Taewoon and Kyungwoo seem to know something suspicious about Daehwi, plus the show has yet to reveal what's going on with the ring of texters who always sit in the same room messaging each other instead of talking (which I find quite amusing, although I get it has to be that way so we won't see their faces).

School 2017 is really shaping up to be one of my favorite dramas. There's just something with friendship and family-themed dramas that get my attention more than dramas centered on romance, not that romance isn't good because I'm also a fan of that and that's where I started to get hook on k-dramas but I digress.

I'm glad that the drama took the time to address teacher's issues as well instead of just focusing on the students. As a teacher, I can attest to to the stress that a meddling parent can bring to a teacher's life. I especially hate the line that the principal said --- "Who pays for this school?" because its a threat that means even if the students are not that good so long as money is flowing in due to enrollment, we teachers better make sure that the grades we provide the students is to their parent's liking. This rule of pleasing the parents is especially prevalent among huge, private schools, I've been a part of it once and I was forced to change the grade of a student just because it's below the other subject teacher's grades, that and probably the fact that she is the directress' daughter.

I think I can understand now why Teacher Gu is gruff and cold-hearted with his students now because once upon a time he was just like Mr. Shim but he probably got burned by the system and he became what he is now just passively accepting the school's policy for what it is.

Hopefully, we also get a backstory on the other female teacher who goes home on the dot and could care less about students handing their pre-made student evaluation forms because it makes her life easy.

Ahhh, this is really getting too long now but I'm just so excited for the next episode, please make the days go faster. :)

I just want to say that I don't think Tae-woon was ever X because he was "bored" as he says. I think he's always done it out of rebellion towards his dad for covering up TW's involvement in the accident. TW own guilt is compounded by the fact that he didn't suffer any measurable consequences and he's basically demanding to be punished. He's rebelling against the idea that he doesn't have to pay for his "crimes" by basically forcing his father's and the school board's hand (which is also a form of justice).

Despite Taewoon being a tough-looking and acting kid in his school because of his background as the school director’s son, could it be possible that his attitude was different before his friend died? I mean the Taewoon that I have in mind before the incident was just a normal kid who in the first place wouldn’t cause any trouble at school, let alone screaming “what are you staring at, you punks?” to the whole class.
Taewoon’s decision to be Student X because of boredom is understandable because he lost not just one but two of his best friends, which means he’s all alone after the incident. However now, Eunho seems to be his new understanding friend (or is she gonna be his future gf too? ;)) ohhh the don’t go see Daewhi scene though, reminds me of Junghwan and Deoksun’s hajima sogeting scene (and now im crying inside T_T). Anyways In my eyes, Taewoon and Eunho are similar in a way that they both want to fight for justice and fairness at school, though the approach each of them takes is different – Taewoon is more of the ‘do’ and Eunho is more of the ‘say’ person.
Come on, Taewoon is a nice kid! For me, his reason for bravely doing what Student X did wasn’t just because he’s ‘bored’ but maybe he feels responsible as the director’s son to correct the way the school should be like: an institution where equal opportunities are given to all the students, and where justice runs at all levels.
The fact that Taewoon used the principal’s ID to reveal the student evaluations and also sending the secret footage between him and the principal could be a way of saying hey guys, this is the kind of person our principal really is. Or rather, it could also be used to make the principal realise that he shouldn’t be the “yes, sir” kind of person to the director as it’s not making the school a fair ground for all the students.
All in all I’m surprised that School 2017 turns out to be quite a good drama, despite questioning it at first. But the story line is alright and of course the romantic development between our leads is one of the sole reasons why I’m still on board. Can't wait for next week's episodes!

Yeah, I agree. There's definitely more to his boredom than he's letting on. I guess it's his way of rebelling against his father (and as a result, the whole school). It seems his dad knows that he's the one causing all the trouble (maybe he even knows that Tae-woon is X)?

I understand why Nam-joo said what she said to some extent - the school is horribly discriminative, and she is far more likely to be better treated if she looks like she has it all. I just hope that she didn't actually lie about her background, but just simply because she couldn't tell the truth when other students assume that she's among the rich kids because she's pretty and popular. It seems to me that she really likes Dae Hwi, but their relationship is unhealthy as Dae Hwi only likes her for what she has and she's just playing along just to be the kind of person that Dae Hwi likes. I just hope these two will work things out as they have the potential to be the support system to each other as they can understand each other better because of their similar background.

I feel sorry for Nam Joo, only now, because it looks like she actually likes DH for real. So when NJ sneers at seeing EH, also not 'rich', friendly with DH that time when she got off the bus and saw them together -- she saw that DH better not become to friendly with EH because she isn't any different from NJ, but she is so wrong. EH doesn't wait for a guy to be her hero, the last guy that saved her life JoonKi made her live life with a conscience and she doesn't sit around telling lies and waiting to be accepted by her peers.

1
2

Required fields are marked *

Hm, I wouldn't really say Namjoo is sitting around telling lies, because she's withholding the truth, which is not the same as lying.

Seeing Eunho talk to Daehwi made Namjoo uneasy because nothing about the way Daehwi is behaving towards her gives a sense of security that he does somewhat like her. Plus Eunho did cross the line twice, when she moved really close to Daehwi's lips and then lifted his shirt. So it's all these details piling up, and not Namjoo being inferior in any sense to Eunho (we haven't seen enough of Namjoo to judge) that is causing her jealousy.

True withholding the truth isn't the same as lying. But why do I get the feeling that EH is going to be the one DH will turn to when things get too much for him, and not NJ. I can only hope TW can protect EH from DH as he will be using her as a rebound. But hey nobody wants to separate DH from pretty and popular NJ, it just she seems awfully clingy to DH considering DH wasn't formally introduced to her father yet.

But then again I am just here to watch Eunho and Taewoon and their camaraderie, so if DH will except that in the end I will respect his choice to be with Nam Joo too. Haha those are my subjective comments.

As a fine arts student, I can relate with Eun Ho regarding the finances and all. Arts is really an expensive career to pursue and sometimes, I'd feel guilty when buying materials for plates.

Second, I hate how it's as if the parents are the ones making their kids' future. I hate how they use their money - even paying consultants to do their kids' student evaluations. They're not helping in building the kids' character at all.

I want to thank Kim Yoojung and her management for rejecting the female lead role. I have nothing against her, but I think the drama wouldn't have this vibe/feel if she was the female lead. I don't really know how to explain it. Sejeong, for me, is perfect for the role. I also can't imagine Yoojung with Kim Junghyun, the chemistry might not be as strong as his chemistry with Sejeong, which is 99% of the reason why I got hooked with this drama.

It made sense for Yoojung to reject the role, because she already has experience from a school drama like Angry Mom under her belt and I don't think School 2017 would've helped her grow more as an actor.

I think the reason why Sejeong feels more right is precisely because so much of the cast is relatively new. In youth and school dramas, the chemistry of the ensemble and not just the leads is very important. The Liar and His Lover for example also had a rookie cast that created a very good synergy. So it was good that the casting turned out this way! They'd be more comfortable with each other, and not be burdened by having to match up with a much more experienced actor.

I think I was wrong about teacher Gu. I thought he was a first class jerk. Running errands for principal Yang and director Hyun.

When he takes Eunho's sketchbook, he took it for her own good. Yeah he is a bit 'tough-love', but if anyone saw her ideas about a superhero in her book, she would have been labelled as a possible X or at least an X affiliate or supporter.

Gu takes kindly on Tae Woon by giving his phone back immediately, probably trying to throw Director Hyun off, maybe Tae Woon also saw it that way, that she should not be in awe of X as she may get hurt.

When Dae Hwi and Tae Woon fight and Eunho also gets caught there for 'not reporting it' when she injures her arm, remember, Gu gives them a choice and they obviously go with the unofficial punishment, Gu only includes Eunho because he could see she could serve as a mediator between the two, and he was right because they nearly fought before running their laps.

You are certainly not alone on that note, I keep dying waiting for Kyung Woo to play Dae Hwi a guitar riff maybe something like "tears in heaven" which is more serious by Eric Clapton or "St Agnes and the burning train" by Sting which is more of a lighter theme as Dae Hwi feigns innocence like there is no tomorrow, as a catalyst to make amends with Tae Woon.

Lol, those two Seo Ji Hoon and Jang Dong Yoon are really amping up interest in this show as well.

I love how the down vote button has disappeared for now, thanks dramabeans, ooooh what is that shiny button oh-uh-jusaeyo, it says comments, ooooo drop down list says recent oh so that is the easier way to find recent comments, I only found that out now, kekeke.

I still don't really understand what happened at the end where everyone saw the video, can someone explain this part to me?

It's a video in which Principle Yang gave Taewoon the answers of the math competition, thus providing solid proof that the competition was just a way to boost privileged students' student evaluations, and the winner was predetermined.

@inked

Poor TaeWoon though only Eunho knows he pulled that prank. I just hope that prank which revealed the truth about the math competition being rigged in TW's favor isn't 'the straw that broke the camel's back' for Dae Hwi.

I love a plot arc that goes from arc to full circle.

On a side note, our Monday night writer and reviewer, Hanshimi writes, this is taken from School 2017 ep 3:

"The next day, Eun-ho catches sight of Tae-woon hanging around the principal’s office with a mysterious bag in his hand. When he slips inside, Eun-ho follows—only to find it totally empty.

Confused, Eun-ho starts to search for Tae-woon, until she hears Principal Yang sneezing and heading toward the office. Panicked, Eun-ho looks around for a place to hide when Tae-woon suddenly comes out of nowhere and pulls her behind a wall, clamping a hand over her mouth and clutching her close."

So the missing item from the bag, the video-camera, that Yoo JiTae...why do I keep on putting off rewatching Healer, oops I mean Hyun TaeWoon sets up for the use of catching principal Yang out in the latest prank by our hero.

Could you guys talk about what ISSUE is actually doing in this series. I mean it's been four eps since he was introduced, and all I see is just flashes of him.

He is just a supporting character. There are 10 epi left, for sure there will be space for him. According to what I read, he will involve is some love triangle with Sarang & Kyung Woo.

So is there going to be a talent competition at the school or something? That would be interesting and a final arc for the kids. But judging by the look on principal Yang's face after teacher Shim's kind and thoughtful prank for the kids. I am guessing school administration would never allow it.

I'm just reading recaps for this series as I got discouraged by Ep1-2. Will think about watching it after a while as I like EH & TW interactions :)
This is a cute behind the scenes clip I found! Love how he automatically shields her! Enjoy!

Didn't really care much for this drama until Tae Woon sabatoged himself to take the math competition down with him. There were way more obvious ways to end the competition (like posting the math answers all over the school) but the fact that he chose to throw himself under the bus for it shows a lot about his character. Poor boy, I think he thinks of himself a monster like his father just because he benefits the most from it all, and he's marked himself one of the targets in this quest for justice.

I love Tae Woon more and more after each episodes, Kim Jung Hyun is my current crush right now. I start to watch his previous works and then think "how can I don't know you?" xD Well, this episode makes me wondering about what will happen next. Will Tae Woon get more hate feeling from his friends? Will Dae Hwi hate him more and start to believe that he is really a jerk? Ah, can't wait for the next monday.

looole i hope you get this, cuz so many disruptions have happened trying to comment on this. k. let's think about this from Dae Hwi's perspective. ONLY his perspective. he can't read minds lolz.

1. His poor finanacial status has always been a sore spot. We see this when he says in the past that he's always "receiving" and feels bad. He's basically like ron weasley from hp. he's poor, and feels bad especially next to his rich best friend. point is, he feels self concious about this, so if someone uses his poorness against him or a friend, he's going to be sensitive.
2. He was alone at the funeral. Yup. he was at the funeral, with the grandma, and that was it. sort of a depressing funeral. oh and on top of it, his friend can't even keep his good reputation. nope he's a reckless deliquent now and the two people who know that's not true, and the one that can do something about it, won't. He must wonder why his friend won't show up, and if he has something to hide.
3. Dae Hwi DOES ask Tae Woon what happened. We don't know what Tae Woon said, but it's not like he hasn't asked lol.
4. The newspapers. They only mention Joon Gi even though BOTH were being "reckless" again. he must wonder what he has to hide.
5. Tae Woon was probably the exception. most rich kids are snobby, but nope, not tae woon. I don't know about you, but I've definitely had friends who i've known for ages, and they turned out to be way different than I thought. this must be what DH is thinking, that he was wrong about TW
6. Tae Woon feeds into it. He feeds the snobby rich boy attitude, by calling Dae Hwi pathetic, I mean really what is he suposed to think?
7. this is a theory. but I think that TW fed the rumors that he was the one that caused the accident, and maybe even told DH that. for two reasons. i think that he secretly agrees with dae hwi that he's a coward. he probably thinks that he shouldv'e tried harder to take part of the blame. secondly, he most assuredly has survivor's guilt. he doesn't want dae hwi to feel an ounce of guilt for joon ki's death, cuz it's such a awful feeling. so he probably lied to protect dae hiw from the knowledge that it was HIS call that caused the accident. DH with all the other points i mdae in mind, thinks he must be right, and blames him for everything and treats him liek crap.

it really makes sense, if you think about it from his perspective only, and not the viewer's persepctive.

Why don't the rich kids go to a rich school? Geumdo High School has poor students like Eun Ho, Dae Hwi, and Sarang. Or at least transfer all the rich kids into another homeroom with a teacher willing to comply with the steering committee's demands like Teacher Jang. How did Mom even get invited to their members-only coffee meeting?

I enjoyed the twist that Nam Joo was poor. Since even Eun Ho was surprised that Dae Hwi was poor during her chicken delivery, I take it Dae Hwi and Nam Joo have never met each other's parents nor do they ever talk about their families. I'm sad Idol Boy turned out to be an ass.

Kyung Woo's evaluation was spot-on. "He is excellent at seeing the essence of a person." I was hoping Tae Woon would publicly post the math competition answers too, but sending the recording to everyone in the school was genius in deflecting any accusations of him of being X. But isn't the video awfully suspicious? Why would the school rebel suddenly act all nice to Principal Yang and promise to study? I'm sorry to say, but life sucks at age 28 too.

A big thanks for the recap, @chocolatte!

I think nam Joo hiding her father is wrong but understandable. The reason why she can't tell dae hwi is his fault, when she asked him in an earlier episode in the forehead kiss scene what he likes about her, he said he wants everything she has or something on those terms. He doesn't like her doesn't want to understand her, it seemed. To me at least in that scene, he kissed her only because otherwise she would have taken offence and they could have broken up not because he wanted to. His two faces kind of started to show then. I don't think he's bad or anything just that he's stressed and his relationships aren't based on his true feelings. Maybe after joong ki died, he changed that way. Closed off people. Nam Joo thinks that if she tells him, he'd break up with her because he doesn't like her as her but because of all that she has. Her feelings seem genuine though. She tries hard and loves her family too. She seemed genuinely happy on receiving food from her dad. In the bus scene when dae hwi first talked of her family and it wasn't revealed that she was poor yet, it seemed she realised that to dae hwi, her family status was important enough to have researched it, while for her, it wasn't. It must have hurt her. Dae hwi is probably too involved in himself to see he's hurting her. It's not his fault but I see where she comes from.

Dae hwi is different with eun ho because she is that bright bulb of light. I really think he ll fall for her and not nam Joo as he already doesn't have genuine feelings for her, although I don't want that love triangle ( I ship tae woon and eun ho completely) I wish dae hwi would see nam Joo for who she really is and understand her. But that's not the way his character arc is going to be I guess.
