The Best Hit: Episodes 19-20

Hearts will be broken when denial and misunderstandings take center stage this hour, and every generation will be faced with a dilemma that requires a choice to either act or do nothing. Putting off their worries will seem like a desirable choice when getting through the daily grind is hard enough for some of our characters, but when the past threatens to rear its ugly head, they’ll have no choice but to act now.

EPISODE 19 RECAP

Waiting alone in the dark, Woo-seung picks herself up and hops gingerly down the steps, careful not to put any weight on her injured ankle. Each step she takes is harder than the last, and when she falters, an arm grabs hers—it’s Hyun-jae, who asks if she’s okay.

Breathless, Hyun-jae acknowledges that he didn’t originally plan on coming to fetch her, and when she gripes over why he didn’t come sooner, he squawks that he came as fast as he could. Seeing her hobble away from him, he bends down in front of her and instructs her to climb on his back. She protests at first, but he insists that her ankle looks worse than she claims, so she hops on.

On the way down, Hyun-jae sets her straight on trying to do everything on her own because it’s more admirable to accept help from others. When she asks if she’s heavy, he bluntly says, “You’re not light, to be honest.” Ha.

Annoyed, Woo-seung yelps that she’s lighter than the average girl and gets even more worked up when he laughs at that. He hikes her up higher on his back, and she thanks him for coming to get her. Not too far behind them, Ji-hoon sees them together, having arrived two steps too late.

When they’re finally out of the woods, Woo-seung says she can walk from here. But Hyun-jae doesn’t let her down, saying that it’s a bad habit to overexert herself… and then her stomach growls loudly. Snorting, he asks if she’s hungry and calls her a “food goblin.”

They stop at a nearby restaurant, where Woo-seung calls Hyun-jae out for staring at her while she eats. She’s caught off-guard when he answers, “Just because,” but then he adds, “I’m wondering where all that food goes.”

He offers her a tissue to wipe her mouth, and when she asks if isn’t hungry, he replies that he’s full just from watching her eat. So Woo-seung polishes off her bowl of ramyun (and sets it down gracefully on his side of the table, ha) before digging into his portion. As he watches her slurp the noodles, his disapproving expression melts into a smile.

It isn’t long before Hyun-jae detects his own happy reflection in the mirror, and then he suddenly bolts up in his seat and stammers that he needs some fresh air. Once he’s outside, he tells himself to keep it together: “You have to go back someday. Plus, she’s the girl your supposed son likes! Why do you go crazy whenever you see a girl? She’s not your type anyway!”

He tells himself that he’s just lonely, and when Woo-seung turns to look outside, she sees him doing jumping jacks in place. Her attention is quickly diverted when she’s given some free food, which makes her break into a happy dance and yelp Hyun-jae’s catchphrase: “Thumbs up!”

Ji-hoon heads straight for bed when he returns home, and MC Drill wonders if his buddy failed the audition tonight.

After setting the Star Punch contract in her room, Bo-hee runs into Kwang-jae in the hall, where he offers stilted congratulations about her moving to a bigger agency. He feels there’s no need for her to be sorry because she’ll be doing him a favor if she finds success again.

They end the conversation on an awkward note, and Kwang-jae retires to his room where he takes out the ring he bought for Bo-hee. With a long sigh, he tells himself, “This is enough,” and tucks the ring back in the drawer.

Kwang-jae’s idol girl group stops at the bakery during Ji-hoon’s shift to comment on how much brighter the bakery has gotten since he started working here. They head out when Hyun-jae comes to collect them, and he hangs back to lecture Ji-hoon about not coming to pick Woo-seung up last night when he laid the groundwork for him.

Turning toward him, Ji-hoon asks outright: “Do you like Choi Woo-seung?” Stunned, Hyun-jae sputters in response before settling on a firm “no,” adding that his standards are too high to like a girl like her. The gentleman doth protest too much, methinks.

In any case, Ji-hoon isn’t interested in any more of Hyun-jae’s dating advice and thinks it’s high time for Hyun-jae to move out. He takes Hyun-jae’s non-response to mean “yes,” and heads out, leaving Hyun-jae to wonder why he’s acting so coldly.

Grandpa waits for Mal-sook at the pre-school van drop-off location, where she shows up holding hands with a boy. Aw, is he the one she had a crush on?

Grandpa is offended by the boy’s ill-mannered greeting of a slight nod without breaking eye contact, but Mal-sook apologizes on her grandfather’s behalf and pulls the boy away, who turns back to send Grandpa a smirk.

After being told that there isn’t anything out of the ordinary regarding Woo-seung’s behavior at work, Young-jae orders his secretary to hurry up on closing the deal with Bo-hee. He panics upon hearing that his wife is on his way to the office right now, then whines when he’s told that she seemed angry.

Woo-seung spends her day meticulously fixing a typo on a stack of Star Punch flyers. She’s startled when MJ shows up out of seemingly nowhere and asks her for her help in putting together a large jigsaw puzzle he claims a fan sent him.

He disagrees with the idea that this falls outside of her job description, arguing that an intern should help out the agency’s artists. He cajoles her into helping him anyway and agrees to tell everyone that this was work-related.

He’s impressed when she assembles the edges rather quickly, which she says there’s no other way to go about it. That prompts him to ask what someone should do with a puzzle whose pieces never fit from the start, and she pragmatically replies that person should tear the whole thing apart and start all over.

Her answer gives him pause, and he wonders, “Should I just do that?” We’re not talking about the puzzle anymore, are we? She notes that the image appears to be a photo and he coyly replies, “Should I call it a beautiful face?” I’ll be really impressed if that’s a photo of Woo-seung.

But then that “beautiful face” becomes all too clear when Woo-seung lays down one of the final few pieces… as MJ. LOL. And then MJ lays his head on the table to match the image.

At home, Grandpa’s memory appears to be getting worse because he can’t even recall the word “hat.” There’s an awkward moment when Grandpa asks Mal-sook not to attach a flower on the paper hat she’s decorating and learns that this hat is meant for her new boyfriend.

He bitterly remarks that he doesn’t like that boy and slyly asks if she’ll keep seeing him, to which Mal-sook says that’s up to them, the couple.

Turns out Young-jae’s rich wife Cathy is upset for offering Bo-hee a contract without her knowledge. She doesn’t let her husband change the subject and doesn’t believe for a second that it’s strictly business because she knows that Young-jae had feelings for Bo-hee.

She orders him to call it off immediately, threatening to show him how angry she’ll get if he doesn’t. She’s ready to storm out, but Young-jae grabs her arm, whips her around, and tells her to look into his eyes to see that she’s the only woman he loves.

The cheesy line mollifies her for the time being, and after she leaves, Young-jae decides that he’ll sign Bo-hee and claim the World Agency building anyway.

On the way to another gig, the idol girls scold Hyun-jae for referring to their boss Kwang-jae by name. They sigh over how tough things are for Kwang-jae, who is about to lose the World Agency building in a matter of days because he’s in the red.

However, the girls agree on his deep sense of loyalty, given that Kwang-jae lived with people who aren’t his blood relatives for years. Hyun-jae is surprised when he hears that Kwang-jae stopped working soon after Hyun-jae’s disappearance to spend years searching the country for him.

Speaking of whom, Kwang-jae seeks out a former colleague to ask for a job at his entertainment agency. Unfortunately, he’s turned away and told that he can’t even compete with the many entry-level candidates who hail from elite universities and speak multiple languages.

Woo-seung is too tired to talk to anyone when she returns home from work. But Hyun-jae counters that she’s the first person he’s seen all day, and is miffed when she trudges toward her room.

He does open the door to her room a bit later, wondering how she has the strength to study after her long day. She asks to be left alone and closes the door, only for him to open it again. She isn’t interested in lending an ear to whatever’s on his mind, though, and slams the door in his face.

But Hyun-jae won’t be shut out and gripes that he’s desperate, so she begrudgingly agrees to hear him out. He makes sure to preface that this story is absolutely not about him before setting her up with a hypothetical: What would she do if she traveled forward in time by 20 years and the people she knew weren’t living their lives the way she expected and needed help?

He expounds on the idea that she couldn’t necessarily tell those people the truth lest they think she was crazy, so would she stay low and wait until she could go back to her time or take the risk and help that person in need? He jumps on her reply of “Go back,” but then she barks in clarification: “Go back to your room!”

Woo-seung doesn’t consider Hyun-jae’s worries to be a real crisis when she’s irritated enough because MJ treats her like his servant at work. She promises to hear his absurd-sounding time travel story later, refusing to hear another word. She pushes him out of the room, and he tumbles down the steps.

Hyun-jae picks up a triangle kimbap at a convenience store to lift his spirits, and then spots Kwang-jae drowning his sorrows away in soju outside. Amused, Hyun-jae makes sure to capture this rare moment of a tipsy Kwang-jae, and then he pours him a glass because it’s unlucky to fill one’s own glass.

He asks if Kwang-jae is torn up over his looming debt and asks how much that is. Kwang-jae doesn’t see the point revealing the amount when Hyun-jae barely has two pennies to rub together, but he does admit that he thought of the settlement money when Hyun-jae made his sudden reappearance.

He realizes it was CEO Lee’s fault for not writing up a formal contract with Hyun-jae, and then concedes that Hyun-jae was the rightful owner of the bagfuls of cash he took because he did do the majority of the work. He recognizes that he can’t ever match Hyun-jae in both talent and success and believes that people are born into their destiny: “I, Lee Kwang-jae, can’t ever be like Yoo Hyun-jae even if I were to die and be reborn. No matter how hard I try, I can’t…”

Kwang-jae knocks out right then and there, so Hyun-jae carries him on his back. He fondly remembers the time he got plastered not long after his debut and Kwang-jae had to carry him back to the studio. “You might not believe it… but this isn’t what I wanted,” he admits.

In his drunken stupor, Kwang-jae murmurs, “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that to you. I’m sorry.”

Back at home, Woo-seung hops down to the bathroom, only to come face to face with Ji-hoon when she opens the door. He asks if she doesn’t need to go get her injured ankle checked out, but when she quips that it’s nothing, he leads her away to treat her ankle with a cold compress.

She’s impressed, but Ji-hoon doesn’t consider it a big deal since he’s seen plenty of sprained ankles among the trainees. She asks what he plans to do now that he’s quit the music industry, and though Ji-hoon isn’t sure what his next steps will be, he does know one thing for certain: “I won’t give up anymore.”

Out in the rooftop, Hyun-jae thinks of Kwang-jae’s current financial situation and his woes of never being able to match Hyun-jae in anything no matter how hard he tries. Sighing, Hyun-jae resolves, “I guess there’s no way for me to quietly go back [to my time] anymore.”

EPISODE 20 RECAP

At the Star Punch building, MC Drill stops by the lounge for a drink. He gets an eerie feeling and is scared half to death when he looks up to see Hye-ri approach him like a ghost. She asks after Ji-hoon and learns that he lost his last potential shot at the debut team. She has MC Drill arrange a time for her to meet Ji-hoon when he’s feeling better, and MC Drill beats himself up for obeying her.

Grandpa schedules a doctor’s appointment over the phone and happens to see Mal-sook pushing her new boyfriend on the playground swings. He takes issue with how the boy bosses his granddaughter around, but Mal-sook motions at her grandfather to leave.

Mal-sook doesn’t see anything wrong with what happened at the playground when Grandpa confronts her about it later. He points out that the girl is typically the one who’s on the swing and compares her budding relationship to Chun-hyang and her servant girl Hyang-dan.

But Mal-sook doesn’t get the folktale reference and thinks he means Cheongyang County, which is famous for their scallion pancakes. Furthermore, she objects to traditional gender roles in her relationship and barks at her grandfather to butt out of her love life.

Hyun-jae checks himself out in the mirror and collects the few bills he’s hidden underneath his sheets when he spies the broken watch peeking out from under the bed. He puts it on and heads to the Star Punch building, asking to see the CEO. Although he doesn’t have an appointment, he’s sure that Young-jae will want to see him when he hears his name.

Meanwhile, Young-jae sits down with the architectural firm who will renovate the World Agency building once the bank seizes the property in the next few days. Just like his other meeting with his music producer, he speaks in vague terms to sound like he knows what he’s talking about, though all that does is confuse his audience.

He’s annoyed when his secretary interrupts the meeting to announce that he has a guest claiming to be Yoo Hyun-jae. Cue Hyun-jae sauntering into the office with a smile, “Park Young-jae, it’s been a long time.” Young-jae gapes in surprise.

The former Jay-2 members take their conversation up to the roof, where Young-jae has a hard time believing that the man standing before him is actually Hyun-jae. He then remembers the time he saw Hyun-jae through his telescope and asks for solid proof.

Hyun-jae doesn’t think that’s necessary since he can tell that deep down Young-jae knows the truth. He’s willing to oblige him with information only they know to make his case, though he understands that Young-jae will need some time to accept the current situation since it was the same with Kwang-jae.

But Hyun-jae isn’t here to talk on that subject and notes that Young-jae has made quite a fortune off of his music notebook. He asks point blank, “You have it, don’t you?”

Young-jae’s blustery response confirms his suspicions. Hyun-jae says he knows Young-jae has released his original compositions under MJ’s name, but he isn’t here today to collect everything that’s rightfully his—he’s willing to settle for some money and a job at Star Punch. Lastly, since he can’t risk using the name Yoo Hyun-jae in this era, he shares his alias, Da-bong.

Grandpa sits down with Mal-sook’s bossy boyfriend at a cafe and scoffs at the boy’s low level of taekwondo expertise. He then employs the popular drama trope of chucking a money envelope (or in this case, gift vouchers, heh) at the boy, ordering him to accept that in exchange for ending things with Mal-sook, whom he raised himself.

The little boy carefully weighs his options and accepts the envelope. He says he’ll tell Mal-sook himself, and Grandpa ensures the boy will follow through with a clean breakup. Once the boy leaves, Grandpa beams with pride.

Kwang-jae gets pulled into sharing Mal-sook’s story when one of the idol girls asks about the girl’s mother. Mal-sook’s mother was CEO Lee’s only daughter, who fell in love and ran off with one of the old man’s lackeys. She tried asking her father for forgiveness some years later, but CEO Lee didn’t budge.

She gave birth to Mal-sook shortly afterward, but then died in a car accident on her way home. Thus, Grandpa never got a chance to patch things up with his daughter, and as Kwang-jae tells this sad tale, we see Grandpa meet a gloomy-looking Mal-sook at the playground and pushes her on the swings. Aw.

The bank calls to inform Kwang-jae that his debt has been paid off by Young-jae, which makes Kwang-jae assume that Bo-hee has signed with Star Punch after all.

In reality, Young-jae has been coerced into complying with Hyun-jae’s demands. Hyun-jae, who is now Star Punch’s newest executive director, marvels at the state-of-the-art equipment in the recording studio. Still not willing to believe that this Hyun-jae is the same man he once knew, he has his secretary verify his identity. If that weren’t bad enough, he’s ordered to meet his wife at the department store.

Later that night, Woo-seung takes issue with MC Drill working out inside the tiny apartment, but he has a bone to pick with her too. He heard that Ji-hoon threw away his last shot at the debut team because of a certain someone, and she howls, “Me?!”

Now that Woo-seung knows that Ji-hoon ran to pick her up in the mountains last night, she waits in the hammock for him until he comes home. Ji-hoon listens to how much she enjoys this hammock and says they should go inside, and so Woo-seung asks if he went looking for her last night.

Ji-hoon lies that she was gone by the time by the time he arrived, but she thanks him for coming for her anyway. She feels bad for being the reason he lost his chance with the agency, but he cuts her off, saying that they’ll probably call again if they need him.

Before he can head inside, she asks if they can’t go back to the way things were, as good friends. She makes light of his amorous feelings for her, teasing that he probably can’t even kiss her…

…And then Ji-hoon marches forward and swoops in for a gentle kiss. “I can do it,” he says, adding apologetically that he can’t settle for being friends anymore. He walks away and cringes with embarrassment before heading inside.

While Grandpa fails in his attempts to console Mal-sook over her recent breakup, Woo-seung is unable to get her mind off of Ji-hoon’s kiss, so she stomps out of her room and slaps him upside the head.

Whereas Hyun-jae and MC Drill don’t understand where that sudden reaction came from, Ji-hoon explains that he deserved that slap, but doesn’t regret anything.

Hyun-jae buys a drink at the Star Punch lounge and accidentally leaves his phone behind. He doesn’t know that it’s Woo-seung when he doubles back to retrieve his phone since her hair covers her face while she picks up her things.

Elsewhere, Grandpa orders an ice cream to-go for Mal-sook, though he seethes when he sees her bossy ex-boyfriend flaunting his newfound money to treat another girl to dessert. He exacts his revenge by swiping the boy’s ice cream and cackling gleefully, but he ends up looking like the bad guy when the boy cries and pins him as the mean grandpa who stole his ice cream.

Grandpa struggles to describe his symptoms to his doctor, but attributes his recent memory loss to age. Concerned, his doctor recommends that they run another test.

Young-jae jumps a foot when he returns to his office to find Hyun-jae sprawled out on his couch. Hyun-jae comments that he deliberately chose to work in this space since it’s the most spacious room in the office, so Young-jae decides to see himself out.

A production crew takes up space in the Star Punch lobby to film a music video. This means Woo-seung has to wait for the crew to take a break, but when the director calls “Cut!” another employee bumps into her and her foot gets caught in one of the cables.

She trips and a production lamp crashes between her and one of the idol girls. Everyone rushes toward the idol girl and the director makes a huge fuss over her tiny scrap, ignoring the deep cuts on Woo-seung’s arm.

Learning that Woo-seung is an intern, the director berates her for putting his star in harm’s way, and then a voice nearby cuts him off. It’s Hyun-jae, who barely lets the director introduce himself before bending down to check that Woo-seung is okay.

Now it’s Hyun-jae’s turn to rebuke the crew for their disorganized cables and asks, “Who will take responsibility for injuring one of our employees?” The director issues an apology, and Hyun-jae grows angry at the cuts on Woo-seung’s arm.

He confirms that he now works at Star Punch and that part of his memory has returned. He helps her up and asks if she’s able to walk. Woo-seung nods, and he leads her away by the hand, saying, “Let’s go, Part-timer.”

Epilogue

Grandpa receives an official diagnosis that he’s suffering from the early stages of Alzheimer’s. His doctor recommends exercises to help him stay mentally active, and tells him to write down the things he wants to make sure to remember. So Grandpa does just that, and that night he falls asleep next to Mal-sook with a marker in his hand. The camera pans across a stack of children’s books and an open workbook where Grandpa has written one thing over and over: “My granddaughter Lee Mal-sook.”

COMMENTS

I’m not crying; for your information, there’s an inflammation in my tear gland. Oh, who am I kidding—that final shot broke my heart into a million pieces. Suffice it to say that I’m a huge sucker for gruff paternal figures who reveal a soft emotional underbelly for their loved ones, so it’s no surprise that I adore the subplot with Mal-sook and her grandfather.

These two already captured my heart even before we heard how and when Grandpa took her under his wing, and I cracked up when Grandpa pulled all the classic drama clichés on her bossy short-lived love interest to protect his precious girl. Even as precocious a child Mal-sook can be, her arguments with Grandpa in regards to her first love (and breakup) were all to be expected, and now I worry how she’ll cope once she finds out that her grandfather—who is trying his damnedest to prevent his brain from forgetting the most important person in his life—may fail to recognize her one day. My eyes are welling up with tears just thinking about it.

So let’s move on to a different topic, like Ji-hoon’s declaration to never give up again and taking a bold step to express his feelings for Woo-seung. It was easy to guess that he wouldn’t make it in time to come for Woo-seung, though I found it admirable of him to confront Hyun-jae on whether or not he had feelings for her. I doubt that Ji-hoon fully buys Hyun-jae’s answer of “no,” and can only presume that he might throw that answer back at Hyun-jae when the latter does profess his feelings for Woo-seung down the line.

To be frank, I’m not thrilled about Hyun-jae and Woo-seung being our OTP in this show, since I would prefer Hyun-jae and Ji-hoon duking it out over anything else, such as music or dancing or who Ji-hoon’s father is. How I personally feel about the pairing doesn’t change the narrative trajectory of course, and there’s plenty of other things that The Best Hit offers for me to enjoy. What I hope the show can avoid going forward is using a contrived romance as a crutch to sustain the plot until we get to unravel more of the main mystery.

Which brings us to Kwang-jae, whom I never considered a prime suspect in Hyun-jae’s disappearance in 1994. His drunken ramblings cement the idea that he thinks he’ll never be as important a presence in Bo-hee’s life as Hyun-jae was, though I would argue that he isn’t giving himself enough credit for creating his own family and living with them under one roof. It saddened me to see him close the door on his decades-long crush on Bo-hee as well as his fruitless attempts to get any job in the hopes to save his family.

I’m not sure what he’ll think when he finds out that Hyun-jae agreed to let Young-jae keep his success in exchange for paying off their debt, since neither Hyun-jae nor Kwang-jae are aware that the CEO still plans on nabbing that building for himself. But now that Hyun-jae has wriggled his way into Star Punch, it means we can expect more hijinks between him and MJ. Next Friday can’t come soon enough.

Although it would be great to have him back with a new drama sooner rather than later! His weekly appearance in 1n2d is not enough (since regretfully he isnt as funny as the rest of them which then limits his screentime. im not complaining as i really think his addition to that group has been good for the show and for him too).

except for jun ho.. no body is consistently funny.. or lol funny..
infact what works for them is that they are like most of us.. goofy, comfortable in their band of boys..

ALthough gotta say he has become so much better on the show because he has found his footing (being chillax and not worrying abt being funny.. although he made a lot of commentson that this episode.. lamenting he can't entertain people.. and i felt bad for him)

On screetime, all of them are always on the screen :P .. i doubt they are ever separate to garner individual time except for Jun ho ofcourse.. and JJY when it is time to play games

I was crying when I watched that last scene yesterday and then reading the recap had me turning on the waterworks again. Malsook and Grandpa are each other's only living relatives, and Malsook is still so young. She's already lost her parents. Alzheimer's is the most heartbreaking of illnesses. Terminal cancer would be a hell less cruel. I can't believe this episode stuck in these funny scenes of the boyfriend, only to sucker punch us in the end like that, even though I had already feared alzheimer's when he couldn't remember "hat".

The epilogue had me teary-eyed. I really thought Grandpa's forgetfulness was played for jokes, but then it turned serious. T_T

It was sweet watching his relationship with Mal Sook and seeing him trying to protect her. I guess (or I hope) he is not the culprit behind the money mystery.

The more I think about it, the more I don't see how Hyun-jae can go back to the past and live out his life there. Temporarily, sure. Permanently though? What does he do? Go back and completely change history? Put everything right and then sit back and watch Ji-hoon and Woo-seung be born and grow up? And what about if he really is Ji-hoon's father, does he step in and be dad instead of Kwang-jae? Denying them that relationship? And the same with all the other members of the makeshift family? (Assuming he doesn't die a year later, which this show doesn't seem bleak enough to consider as a possibility.) I honestly don't see it. The possibility of parallel timelines confuses things, but I find myself going back to my initial suspicion that the date of his disappearance in 1994 is really the day he permanently travels to 2017.

It's really complicated and I don't know how the writer will wrap this up.

The writer screwed up big time. His purpose for being here was to find out what caused his disappearance and build a relationship with those he hurt.
But all we're really getting is this love triangle. As well as he built new connections so it wouldn't make sense for him to go back. He wasn't with bo Hee at the time so he doesn't have that drive(like in Tunnel) to go back for his family.

I don't have that much faith in the way it will be wrapped up

Sad that you are getting downvotes for having a different opinion and people won't even bother to reply with a rebuttal, they just downvote and run.

I don't see any reason why for this to deserve downvotes. I kinda agree with your opinion. For now, I don't see how HJ would go back, he didn't really do much to figure out his own mystery on why he's in 2017. Though I'm a lil bit frustrated about how this drama develops, I treat this drama lightly so I'd just ignore the flops that the writer'd been giving me for the past few episodes .

That's really where it went wrong. I thought that it would be more about father and son and achieving your dreams. At least, that's how it was promoted.

I'm also disappointed by this recent development. I don't mind the initial romance subplot, as a side story it's cute and adorable. But now that it become the focus point of the drama and take away the enjoyment of the initial family comedy and friendships it's presented, I'm also not sure how the writer is going to wrap it up. It seems like they bite more than they can chew.

I somewhat agree with you. I admit that I enjoyed the show more when I thought it was going the way you described. I don't hate the love triangle...ok... I hate the triangle part... but I can't help but be attracted to the chemistry between Hyun-jae and Woo-seung. I wouldn't wish the romance away necessarily, but I wish it was a more minor element of the story. I also think you're right that by putting so little focus on the mysteries and people surrounding his disappearance and past, and so much on new connections, its becoming harder and harder to see him as belonging to 1993 rather than 2017. Its a lighthearted comedy so I wasn't expecting a mind-blowing, earth-shattering ending anyway, but I do wonder more and more what they think will be a natural ending to the trajectory they've placed Hyun-jae on.

Maybe he goes back in time.. dates Bo Hee and then disappears a year later and returns to the future. Strangely.. i would prefer that over the idea of him dying a year later

@giocare that's what I thought too. That hyun jae's purpose for coming was to make amends between BH-KJ, JH-WS, and helping JH finding his goal in life. So seeing the whole triangle it seems like they are trespassing into conventional kdrama zone, which I didn't honestly expect from at least this one. I thought first time in a kdrama the main protagonist will exist without any potential love interest, and it was hilarious and amusing at the same time to see HJ's banter with everyone around him, who doesn't know his real age, so the awkwardness that came with him addressing people of his age and the younger generation gave me much laughs. But now his interaction is mostly limited with WS and it doesn't serve any purpose for the story whatsoever IMO. Before I could enjoy the other interesting plots of the drama since the romance plot was not that much prominent, but now with all the typical plot cliches with the whole 'damsel in distress' events, I have lowered my expectation of the drama. Maybe I'll still watch it just to see how the mystery unravels, but that's just about it.

Definitely my highlight! I'm with you guys. I wouldn't even mind the love triangle if there were only hints of it and it took a back seat. But right now it's taking up screen-time that could be better used elsewhere. It's a shame because, before this week, I was really loving this. The interactions between KJ and HJ in these eps give me hope that show will still get to the meat of the story.

I don' want JH to be anyone's son byt HJ..
But CTH loves BH so much more and so unconditionally.. it is sad that she is so hung up on HJ

BH loves HJ so much that it is sad to see him not notice that even today

WS- can they just pair her up with MJ... i dont want this WS-HJ mess.. also i think writers were trying to pull answer me 1988 with guessing game.. but this is not even remotely in the same category.. even if they are not father and son

He may go back to the past only to die a year later, but this time knowing when and why he had to die, so I guess that won't be as bad, since he could make amends and such, so that history will change just enough to give his friends their happy endings.

Cross-posting from a fanwall write up from last week, but this is how I would like the show to end:

The time travel plot is the universe’s way of getting Hyun-jae to mend his selfish ways, and lets him see how his choices and actions affect those around him, a la It’s a Wonderful Life or A Christmas Carol. It takes a while for the message to get through, as he is very very self centered. Once it does, though, he is allowed to return to 1993. This time around, when Bo-hee tells him she is pregnant, instead of doing a runner, he marries her and they become a Hallyu power couple.

Kwang-jae never needs to be Bo-hee’s Knight in Shining Armor, so he never falls for her, and does not spend the next 20 odd years pining uselessly. Therefore, when Bo-hee’s stylist’s husband walks out on her, he is heart-free to rescue this damsel. He is a stabilizing influence on Woo-seung’s mother, and she is a freeing influence on him, and together they create a stable, loving home life for Woo-seung. Also lots of dongsaengs.

Hyun-jae lets Young-jae know how much he appreciates him and needs him, so Young-jae’s inferiority complex is not allowed to take root and he no longer feels the need to prove himself to everyone at all times. Once their idol days are over, Young-jae, Hyun-jae, and Kwang-jae together form J3, a successful and principled talent agency where they help MC Drill overcome his stage fright, and occasionally let Hye-ri eat.

Ji-hoon has a leg up when it comes to following his dreams, thanks to his famous parents. They still made him go to college before pursuing the stage, but are fully supportive of his music career. He and Woo-seung still grew up together and were still childhood friends, but this time around Ji-hoon has the confidence to confess his changing feelings early on. Woo-seung still writes songs, and she and Ji-hoon make great collaborators.

Everyone lives happily and healthily ever after. The end.

----------------------------

After this week, I can still see this happening. Hyun-jae has started to see beyond himself, and is looking to help Kwang-jae out. He is now working with Young-jae, so he might get a chance to see what a number he did on him back in the day.

There is still the annoying love triangle to sort, and I would prefer he spent time getting to know and like Bo-hee, but it could still happen. *crosses fingers* *knocks on wood*

Actually, that really doesn't sound bad. Everything gets resolved rather nicely. Except for one thing which would make me a bit sad: Kwang Jae wouldn't be Ji Hoon's father figure.....maybe they could make it so that he is like an uncle that at times is more responsible than Hyun Jae and have Hyun jae jokingly complaining that Ji Hoon seems to be more Kwang Jae's son than his own because he is siding with him all the time. I think that could work.

It might be too late for this story development because Hyun Jae has never shown much interest in Bo-hee whatsoever but who knows, we can still hope.

Right now, yes, a bit creepy. But I think Hyun-jae's crush on Woo-seung is not so far gone as to be undoable. If he were to stop spending time with Woo-seung and start spending it with Bo-hee, I can see my senario playing out.

I see people complaining about the writers creating a mess, but I assume they put together the story before starting filming, so why complaining so early? We don't know what's going to happen that could explain everything we have seen so far,...and isn't it better to have an unpredictable story? Anyway, I'm bracing myself for some revelations next week, but whatever it happens, I'm sure HJ will be able to handle it. :)

I'm still enjoying this show, but I do hope the triangle love story wouldn't bog down the otherwise enjoyable drama. They have lots of sub plot going on, whether it's family comedy or friendship or time-travel hijinks that I don't think they actually need to go down the cliché romcom path. I want more of the father-son interactions, or our rooftop room guys doing music together.

I might be in the minority, but I don't think that Woo Seung and Hyun Jae are the OTP. I'm not really shipping either couple, but the story has always been more centered on Ji Hoon's growth then on Hyun Jae's. I like the last few episodes more because Hyun Jae seems more real, and not just a comic diversion or plot device. I was getting tired of watching the talented Yoon Si Yoon do nothing but play with his phone. Up until the last episode he had not shown any interest in Woo Seung. They've got real chemistry, but I think she's destined for the other guy. This show has been light and funny at times, but the romantic elements seem off. There's the triangle, and then the two minor second leads in MJ and the girl who is going to debut. I'm feeling impatient, especially since the triangle feels manufactured.

Required fields are marked *

I agree with a lot of your points. I also don't think of WS and HJ as the OTP even though they were given moments that traditionally go to the OTP. And if she were destined for one of them, it really does seem to be JH. But I also think the drama won't focus as much on romance as a traditional rom-com. We're about to enter week 6 of an 8 week drama and WS isn't having feelings for anyone. They'll probably hint something at the very end.

If there is a romance OTP somewhere, I think it's really Bo Hee and Kwang Jae. A 23+ year pining + raising that woman's child like a real dad really trumps JH and HJ's crushes. I think BH is low-key developing feelings for KJ.

8

Required fields are marked *

I think Bo Hee only has platonic feelings for Kwang Jae. She's appreciative of him for help raising her child but she's not attracted to him in that way. I wouldn't want them to start dating only out of Bo Hee's gratitude. Personally, I want Kwang Jae to find a nice women who's not Bo Hee and be happy.

2
reply

Required fields are marked *

For me the situation is ok since they are attractive people in their early 20s, so it's more than normal that there is some action in the romance department. Moreover, they are more level-headed than usual and you can see that romance is not their priority, they are more concerned about their jobs, their future, or in case of HJ to help his friends or going back to the past.
Regarding OTP, I don't like the word destined too much...WS should end up with the guy that she likes, so if any of the boys are able to win her heart, I'll be ok with it.

Whenever a show promises me laughs I always know there will be a point where I will end up crying my eyes out (*shoutout to Modern Farmer*). Grandpa and Mal Sook stole the show this hour. I absolutely LOVED that they took the classic "i'll give you money if you break up with my son" and switched it around to fit the kids perfectly. This show truly excels when they're NOT FOCUSING ON THE LOVE TRIANGLE. Even the MJ puzzle scene had me falling out of my chair in laughter.

But we have 6 episodes left and I can't help but to feel like there's a lot of loose plots that have yet to be resolved:
1. Hyun Jae's disappearance
2. Woo Seungs relationship with her mother
3. MC Drill!!!! We know very little about him
4. Woo seung's goals?? Will she retake the exam?? Will she end up in the music industry
5. Ji Hoon's career. I was expecting Hyun Jae to give him some tips and help him become a rapper/singer
6. Ji Hoon still hates Hyun Jae. We've missed out on what could've been quality father-son bonding. What was the point of saying he's the father when it did very little to move the plot forward.
7. No Boo Hee and Hyun Jae interactions??
8. Why does Gwang Jae like Bo Hee??

Agree, so many things they have to wrap up yet they are choosing to focus on the least interesting and most cliche. This is why I'm just going to read the recaps and decide after the drama ends whether to watch the remaining episodes. I wonder if they are just going to drop a lot of these things, especially MC Drill. Like it was hinted that he was lying about his age and already been in the military a few times, but with how little screen time he's gotten the past few episodes I wonder if they'll even resolve that.

2
reply

Required fields are marked *

I agree with all your points. I thought it was weird that she just suddenly got that intern job and all her effort to learn for that exam was basically thrown away....I guess she just needs any kind of job.
I also really want the show to focus again more on Ji Hoon's career.....I loved the rap scene and really wanted to see him work for his dreams, not just give up and help in the bakery and then when given another chance, loose it again because he needs to make a run for the girl he likes.
It's like the show forgot a little that it has a lot of characters with their own separate story arcs... :/
And the whole Bo Hee thing is the weirdest one to me. Not even once did Hyun Jae seem to have any interest in her although the premise states that he is the father of her son! The whole separate timeline thing feels like a copout to me. But imagining current Hyun Jae going back and playing father for Ji Hoon feels weird by now because of the whole love triangle with his son's crush thing.

Also, I never really got the feeling that Bo Hee likes Kwang Jae.... and if that's not the case then that's pretty depressing to think about how this guy spend 20 years on a unrequited love.

3

Required fields are marked *

WS was studying in this episode, so I assume she intends to take the exam again. I don't think she will abandon, although HJ might produce a song from her or JH...Not sure about JH goals either. He wants to be an idol just for the money and because he resents his supposed father, ...these are not good reasons, so I hope he will rethink about his future.
Regarding the lack of Bo Hee screen time, I think she is the key to HJ disappearance, the mystery of JH parenthood and likely the money, so for me it makes sense that they leave her for the last weeks when the conflict will be solved. My bet is that HJ and BH will have a chat by the end of next week that will clarify many things and maybe send HJ back to the past (hopefully not forever...).

No, Kwang-jae, that's not enough! T_T I seriously can't see why he didn't say it to Bo-hee (am assuming it's a marriage proposal), it's not like she is getting married to Yong-jae or she cannot make a comeback if she is engaged. He really is the type to bottled it all up, and just might explode at the end. What DID he do to Hyun-jae? Am feeling frustrated plus depressed for Kwang-jae...
Also, another trope, apparently Da-bong is a music genius, hmmm...

I thought that scene with WS tripping and HJ coming to her rescue was a really weird - as in too conventionally rom-com for a quirky comedy like The Best Hit. It felt like I was watching a different drama for a moment. But every else is this set of episodes was gold. I especially loved the Grandpa scenes. That little boy deserved to get his ice cream stolen! That kid actor nailed that asshole-ish attitude. You just know that when the little boy grows up, he'll be cheating on some loving girlfriend and treating her like a servant. I'm also finding MJ to be really cute. Something in his expression reminds me of Park Hyung Shik.

I'm really glad that HJ is trying to do right by Kwang Jae. I'm hoping that now he's working at Star Punch and Young Jae is pretty much giving HJ whatever he asks for, he can make sure JH gets a shot at debuting. Even though it's JH's dream to debut, I'm sort of hoping he'll work in the entertainment business behind-the-scenes instead, since that seems like a more stable job.

It was really out of place and just plain stupid because she deserved to be yelled at. Being clumsy isn't an excuse for breaking expensive equipment and injuring someone else in the process. If she was my employee I'd probably fire her then and there. Like sorry to WS, but you are just an intern, of course idol girl's injuries are more important. They are in middle of filming a MV, and now it will probably have to be delayed until her injury heals some. She just cost them several hundred dollars with the equipment and the delay. HJ coming in and saving her by giving her special treatment was unprofessional of him imo.

4

Required fields are marked *

She was pushed. The fall was not a result of the clumsiness and she didn't get the time to explain herself. Caring about the idol girl more is ok but WS's cut looked quite bad, it's kind of callous to just blame and not help.

I rewatched several times and she isn't actually pushed. She just gets her foot stuck in the cord and loses her balance because she was not paying attention.

4

Required fields are marked *

That is possible but HJ's comment about the wires are true too. She can't escape the blame whether it's intentional or not (it's tripping and there's no 100 percent guarantee for avoiding that in life). The director was angry for a good reason but HJ's reaction is equally justified. Both reactions are not made in a calm manner. If WS's head was hurt instead, who knows what the reaction would be.

3

she was push..u should watch it again..

0

It wasn't so much as a push, but some guy's shoulder slightly bumped into hers because the place was crowded and she was trying to squeeze by. HJ's point to the director was legit: if they were going to film in the public lobby (which YJ was annoyed about in an earlier scene- saying they should have filmed in a studio), the director's team should have organized the wires so as not to serve as a safety hazard. Anyone in that space could have tripped and caused an even bigger accident.

LIke @a says, there is a good reason for both sides to be angry.

4

I thought she was pushed as well. In any case HJ protective instint just want to take care of her, that's love hahaha.

0

Required fields are marked *

I agree that she could be more careful but Hyun Jae wasn't being unreasonable at all. Obviously, they should take care of the idol group member but I like what he said, the cable lines should've been clearly drawn. And as an employee, her well being also is a responsibility of star-punch. I don't think it was out of line for Hyun Jae to scold the director.

7
reply

Required fields are marked *

So, being as this is something that I actually know something about, it makes absolutely no difference whether she tripped or was pushed. Cables on a film set are a known trip hazard and are connected to heavy expensive equipment. They are supposed to taped down in straight lines when they cross walkways. That's why large film crews sometimes assign a person whose *only job* is to tape down all the cables. It was absolutely the fault of the film crew, not WS's. That light could have fallen and injured someone far worse than a few cuts and scrapes, forget about the $$ lost. It's tech crew 101 basic level stuff that gets drilled in your head starting on day one. Maintain your cables. It was completely irresponsible of the techs who set up those lights, even if they were only filming one scene. And what kind of tech leaves their cables in a pile in the middle of a crowded hallway like that anyway?! Ah how our experiences shape our viewing habits, lol. I was pretty irritated when I saw that setup, and was ridiculously glad when HJ came up and said everything I was shouting at my laptop, haha.

That being said, I think this love triangle is kind of a weird thing for the show to focus on when there are so many other plot lines. I honestly wouldn't mind if this were a 50 ep weekend drama or something (and I would totally watch all 50 episodes), but it is a little problematic when the show is this close to ending. I also find it weird that though story-wise I'd much rather see HJ's interactions with BH, I can't help but secretly feel thrilled at all the interactions between HJ and WS. It makes no sense and it not what I think the show should focus on right now, but YSY could have chemistry with a rock. I really don't know how one person can be go from puppy-dog adorable to hot and manly in the span of a single moment. I do have to admit that I was far more okay with the hints at romance when I thought they were setting up the awkward situation where WS falls for HJ, but HJ is busy dealing with the fact that he's been displaced in time and is totally not thinking along those lines at all. I was really looking forward the fallout when WS realizes she has a crush on her best friend's *dad*. I really thought HJ buying the jajangmyun and the race to get it to WS in time, winning her the stuffed toy, all the other traditional rom-com things that he does pretty thoughtlessly were setiing up that situation, so I really don't know how I feel about HJ having feelings for WS.

But despite my misgivings on the direction we're headed, I'm enjoying the ride too much for it to really matter to me if we don't end up going where I think we should go.

Thinking about it you are probably right that it's more the fault of the staff. My mind is getting clouded by how much I hate the direction the show is going in lol. Although girl still needs to pay attention to where she's going, she looked pretty out of it that whole scene and it's not the first time she's made a mess because of her clumsiness. Honestly I skipped through this episode a lot and this scene I only saw in it's entirety without subs, so I didn't really catch the thing about the cables. Ultimately it just pisses me off because the whole scene is just a setup for WS to be a typical damsel in distress that HJ must rescue. No thanks. They could do the lovelines without following the typical cliche romcom scene by scene. I've been watching My Only Love Song and that does a much better job imo of setting up a bickering romance without resorting to cliches or ever losing the comedic tone. The characters fall for each other in a subtle way while bickering most of the time like I think they are sort of going for here, but it's much more believable to me.

Yep, I agree that the cable people were at fault but I think you and I are already predisposed to see it as Woo Seung's clumsiness. I actually rolled my eyes because she's way too distracted at work, dropping stuff here and there. Or maybe tripping is a running gag with her character? (3 kisses...) The phone swap with MJ earlier on was also really obvious.

I'm marathoning My Only Love Song now and it's a hoot. Can't seem to stay away from time-travelling dramas!

I'm probably the only one who enjoys the romance in the show and as a fan of rom-coms, it's nice to see it in a comedy-variety drama. The only thing I'd have to comment on is that the writers should stop giving us the impression that MJ is another love interest as having the two main leads fighting over WS is enough, he's simply useless. I've seen stills off-cam from the live filming this week and it gave me a clear idea on who might be the main OTP, but honesty anything can happen with this drama so it can change anytime on who the main OTP is.

Hyped for this week's episode and for more clues to unfold regarding HJ's disappearance and if he really is JH's dad (personally, I don't think so) and I do think that they'll reveal it this week. As for if HJ will stay or not, I think he will. He seems much better in 2017 and he's not as centered as he was and is beginning to create relationships with others, romantic or not.

At this point with only 6 more episodes left, I think the writer will do a sloppy job with the ending, maybe they will never explain how the time travel even happened and the ending will be simply like, hyun jae comes back from '94, voila, the end.
Also, just had to add, love what @gummimochi said here:
'To be frank, I’m not thrilled about Hyun-jae and Woo-seung being our OTP in this show, since I would prefer Hyun-jae and Ji-hoon duking it out over anything else, such as music or dancing or who Ji-hoon’s father is. How I personally feel about the pairing doesn’t change the narrative trajectory of course, and there’s plenty of other things that The Best Hit offers for me to enjoy. What I hope the show can avoid going forward is using a contrived romance as a crutch to sustain the plot until we get to unravel more of the main mystery.'
This is pretty much how I feel about the show too.^^

It's funny how gummimochi got to the main point in the blink of an eye, is it because of the skills that come with being a reviewer for such a long time? I mean this line 'What I hope the show can avoid going forward is using a contrived romance as a crutch to sustain the plot until we get to unravel more of the main mystery.' -- I do feel they're stalling the big reveal with much romance lately. Also, what about some fake father-son bonding time? Or making another popular band like J2? And on the topic of romance, I thought Mc Drill had more chemistry with Hyori lol, so won't mind if the show goes there. At this stage, there are so many things to take care of, like the very thing that why Bo Hee likes HJ so much that she still mourns for him when it has been 20 years already. Or what's the reason he had to time travel in the first place, is it because he had to meet the love of his life? :S Rather I would have enjoyed something like 'back to the future', where the mother falls for the son in a hilarious kind of way lol.

Right, the rules here don't exactly goes in hand with other dramas' rules. For instance, can you even have two copies of something at one time, eg the notebook. I don't expect any explanation of the time travel as well. (Rule in life: lower your expectation to be happy)

Love this show, i could watch this everyday ( actually i could just see HJ and his multuple expressions everyday. YSY is love!!! )
This week grandpa and mal sook stole the show, having seen the actor playing grandpa mostly in villanous role its wonderful to see him playing these fun characters in SP and TBH. The scene where he stole the ice cream off the boy..ha ha ha so funny!! I hate that the show is going down the Alzheimer's route, i think these two are going to make me bawl?
While the romance is treading dangerously into the "reply me series" territory, i hope the show dosent loose focus on the the main story of HJ disappearance.
I am in the HJ - WS ship and i think its mainly becoz i want to watch them bickering forever. ( loved his trying to convincee her on the time travel story) They have a very snappy energy when they are together. HJ is obviousy interested in WS and i love the way its shown- the little bit extra that HJ always does for her, how he is always paying attention to what says..He may not be thrilled that he likes her but he suerly realizes it.
I also love seeing HJ realize how people around him have changed, its like the christmas carol-- HJ realizing his selfish ways n becoming a better person. I am glad he sorted out KJ money troubles.
I cant say it enpugh-- i LOVE LOVE YSY. How can anyone not fall for that cheeky smile, god he is gorgeous. Off i go to rewatch everything he ever acted in?

I am not really that convinced on the part where Young-jae just complies with Hyun-jae's requests. I get that he is a pushover and has inferiority complex towards Hyun-jae. But then, he runs a big company now and even if Hyun-jae claims the rights to the songs, he wouldn't stand a chance with lack of physical evidence. So why comply to his demands? Is this a plot hole or just me watching too much heavy dramas? lol

Even if they win the court case, the public will cry foul and the scandal will destroy both MJ and star-punch. Public backlash is enough especially considering MJ doesn't even compose his own song and I am not sure if he is gifted enough to prove otherwise. They can't let this be dragged to court at any cost. They'll loose if they do either way.

I love the show, but I think it's time to build on other relationships as well. Although I'm glad that HJ is taking more action, and has decided to help out those who, in some way, matter to him, all of it is overpowered by the blossoming relationship with WS. I hope that next week, we see more of HJ interacting with KJ, BH, and more importantly, JH, because they're more important and relevant to him. Plus, HJ and WS being the OTP is confusing me HAHAHUHU

P.S.

Hyun-jae's meeting with Young-jae was so anticlimatic. I was expecting a more dramatic reveal, but I guess we skipped a lot of unnecessary time spent on that.
I'm totally annoyed with Ji-hoon. Crowding the girl after she already refused you isn't romantic. Everytime he said "I'm not giving up", he made me want to beat some sense into him. It might look very romantic in the drama, but its very creepy in real life, even if its a friend you've known since forever, especially so. I've experienced this a few times, and it gets very tiring and creepy. I really like Ji-hoon and I hope he finds another way to get over his feelings, instead of shoving his love down Woo-seung's throat, when she doesn't even want it.

Saying he was only her best friend to get into her pants is just not true. He's not at all trying to leverage his years of friendship with her as a reason she should accept him. Never did he suggest anything like that. The whole reason he did not confess earlier is because he didn't want to risk losing their friendship, that's not something a guy only interested in sex does. Why should he force himself to continue to quietly be friends with her if it makes him uncomfortable (and btw she has not been a very good friend to JH from the beginning)? Why don't his feelings matter as much as WS's? She doesn't get to force him to keep being her friend because it's comfortable and convenient for her when it's making him uncomfortable. It's pretty selfish of her to expect someone with feelings for her to stay by your side and continue the same relationship they'd always had and also expect them to get over their feelings. People usually need distance to get over romantic feelings.

Drama, please! I'm begging you... bring back the musical hijinks. And the showdown between 90s style and present-day style. Dance-offs! Sing-offs! Fashion arguments!

Anything but the dreaded love triangle. When I'm really digging a show, I don't need that at all. That's how I know it's a great show. Light romantic touch is cool. But putting Woo Seung into situations that make her weak and in need of saving is not cool. She's already shown us that she is not helpless despite her terrible, terrible luck.

Also, I am now impatiently waiting for the HJ reveal as a time-traveler/mega pop star from '90s/JH's dad to the "kids". I want to savor all their reactions.

Thanks soooooo much for the recap! I want to talk about two things and I'm going to split them into two comments because I think I'll run out of space! First, on the HJ-WS romance: I completely agree with gummimochi that it would be disastrous to focus too much on the romance. Nevertheless, I have become extremely invested (against my better judgment) in HJ-WS as an OTP. It started in ep. 11 when WS has a job giving out flyers dressed in a giant pink racoon costume. By this time, HJ has started turning to WS for companionship (he calls her just to talk) and has grudging respect for her incredible work ethic ("Is she trying to take on all the part-time jobs in the world?"). He's also fascinated and slightly repulsed by her (when WS rips off the racoon eye and starts drinking her water through the opening - I will never, ever get tired of watching this); and somehow finds himself doing things for WS which he wouldn't do for anyone else (he really doesn't want to put on that costume; and no matter how much he owed WS, selfish 93-94 HJ would have just walked away); deepens his emotional connection to her (he sees how she longs for her mom to love her and put her first for once); and does exactly the right thing (puts the racoon head on her so she can cry privately). The final scene, where they sit together, WS wearing the racoon head and YJ wearing the body, "Sky" playing in the background; so ridiculous and so beautiful. The beginning of ep. 19, when HJ begins to realize he might have feelings for WS also has this lovely mix of comedy and emotion. HJ still looks at WS with fascination and repulsion as she puts away enormous amounts of food, but now it's bookended by sincere concern for her (running to get her, piggy-backing her, giving her old fogey advice to not be too self-reliant) and the start of something else (when HJ starts to smile as he watches WS eat). I really, really hope that the show isn't toying with us by setting up the two of them as an OTP and then yanking the rug out from under us. Which brings me to my theories on how the show is going to resolve its increasingly complicated plotlines, that I will put in a second comment.

So this is my second comment. Plot-wise, I think we're at a real turning point now. Now that the show has established HJ and WS as the OTP (and if this isn't the case then I hate you, Show, I hate you - no, not really I still love you but I'll never trust you again), things have to resolve a certain way in order not to end up in WTF-land.
1. HJ is not JH's dad. The show has made zero effort to establish any chemistry between HJ and BH, and if anything has gone the other way (KJ's love for BH; HJ's confusion at the idea he was ever involved with BH; BH being a little spacey and delusional). If HJ and BH get together it will be completely squicky.
2. HJ stays in 2017. HJ in 93 was so emotionally isolated, except for his friendship with KJ. Pleasepleaseplease let HJ stay in the present so he can be with WS, JH, Drill and Handphone 4evah.
3. HJ, JH, Drill, WS and MJ (who will redeem himself by revealing that he didn't write/produce his music) will record a song that blows up through social media. Monsta X will make another cameo and come by to congratulate them. JH, Drill and WS will try to play it cool while HJ will be genuinely perplexed ("Who is this Monsta X? Why are they wearing so much makeup?")
4. Mal Sook and Grandpa, the other OTP of this show, will be OK.

Show is juggling so many things now - time travel! record industry shenanigans! one-sided loves! tragic illness! With only 6 episodes left, will it end with a flourish or in a hot mess? I'm rooting for you Show! You can do it!

To me, the romance part might have been used as a way to show an integral part of HJ's character development in the show - he's slowly starting to look away from himself. perhaps, even to the point of giving way for JH, his son (as far as he knows)

In HJ's case: it's easy to hope for your son's happiness when you know that you're not interested in the one he likes. But it's on a different level when you still hope for your son's happiness, even if it means seeing him end up with someone you genuinely like.

Usually, one's selflessness is tested when you are ready to give up that person you value the most for the sake of another person's well-being. But let's see how this goes!

Required fields are marked *

I really like your interpretation. I don't have a problem with HJ falling in love slowly, and without noticing, because it's only one part of his development.

But can we talk about Ji Hoon? Romance is all there is to him at the moment. I actually don't see any development in his character lately. All he's done is insist that he won't back down in liking Woo Seung, which (for me) puts him in clingy second-lead territory. Plus, I was really MAD when he ran out of his debut interview, and am frustrated that he doesn't seem to have any idea or dream now. We only have 6 episodes. Does Hyun Jae have to give him a job as well as dating advice? Hyun Jae would probably rock the fairy godfather role, but I don't want that. Snap out of it Ji Hoon!

For some who are slowly disliking Hyun Jae's character I hope it's not just your shipper's heart that are talking because I feel that this is a JH biased section and from what I see some of the disappointments and frustrations here are steaming from the mutual romance that are slowly developing between HJ and WS.

2

Required fields are marked *

I don't think you should make those assumptions. And frankly I think even if it's true not liking the loveline of a character should be a valid reason for not liking that character. There's nothing wrong with disliking a show or character because of shipping. That's just as valid as any other reason imo. But for me, it's mostly my 90's kpop bias leading to the lowering of my interest in Hyun-Jae. And he's just not as funny of a character anymore, I think that's pretty objective. There just aren't as many jokes and gags about/done by him anymore. So it's perfectly reasonable that for people who liked Hyun-Jae for his comedic role would start to not like him so much now. If we are going to play this game of alleging people are not liking a character for supposedly trivial reasons, then I could say they same for people who are liking HJ a lot still. Are you sure that's not just your YSY-bias speaking? (if it is that's fine actually, I'm against the idea that certain reasons are too trivial for liking or not liking a drama/character)

Required fields are marked *

Personally I'm not really enjoying where the drama is going and how they're handling the romance. Part of it is that I don't really like YSY's portrayal of Hyunjae - it just feels too forced and it always feels like he is acting, not living in the role, which makes him come off exaggerated and caricature-ish. Same goes for Wooseung honestly. Also it's just really weird that a father and son would be in a love triangle, and I agree with gummimochi that it would have been so much better if hyunjae played a mentor role to jihoon instead.

Honestly I think it would be really cool if jihoon debuted under kwangjaes management, although I know it's unrealistic since they don't really have the necessary resources.

Let's all stay calm everyone! I came into show with zero expectations and have had an amazing ride until now. Fingers crossed we will get a good ending (I refuse to have Hyun Jae die in 1994 show, do you hear me??)

I do feel this weekend was stalling for the big reveal about beeper and time-travelling mechanisms. I actually like the love triangle, because I still hold on to my gut feeling that Hyun Jae is not Ji Hoon's father. But he believes it and therefore acts all weird about his growing feelings for WS. I must have a twisted sense of humour, because I found his jumping jacks outside the restaurant hilarious.

Ji Hoon however has become even more serious that usual, so I'm not enjoying that part of the love triangle. Or maybe I'm just frustrated with his character in general, because I'd like him to focus on something other than Woo Seung. Even making bread.

2
5

Required fields are marked *

I agree that I'd like to see Ji Hoon focus on something besides Woo Seung, but I think he is currently at sea and a bit rudderless: he just quit his trainee position because he felt he wasn't getting anywhere, and doesn't have another goal to replace it yet. So he's kind of on vacation. That's understandable. Maybe he needs the time to recoup before figuring out what comes next.

What is weird to me, though, was that Ji Hoon was supposedly passionate about music, and I never saw that--just a kind of a dogged, grim determination and endless hard work. Did he ever listen to music because he liked it, or sing or dance for fun?
Even his rap was depressing. He really needs some of Hyun Jae's lightness and spontaneity, poor guy.

Of course, Hyun Jae needs some of Ji Hoon's (and Kwang Jae's) sense of responsibility toward other people, which I think he's starting to get. So Hyun JaeJ is progressing faster than Ji Hoon character-wise at this point. But I think Ji Hoon will get there.

I think it's more that Ji-hoon does have a natural talent and passion for music and probably used to enjoy singing/dancing/rapping for fun, but years of the factory-like idol training system can easily beat that out of a person. It's like sometimes people may get their dream job, but the environment they work in is too stressful or something, so they start to lose the passion they used to have for their work. It's not necessarily a good thing to be an idol who is very passionate about music, it could make you stand out too much in the group or put you at odds with the company over musical direction and freedom.

Nice observations you two. I should identify with Ji Hoon actually (not that I've ever been an idol but I did practice music pretty hard and it sucks out the fun). Hyun-jae's jumping jacks cracked me up, too. A perfectly acceptable substitute for push-ups as a sublimination method, especially on the dirty sidewalk. Color me warped. ;-)

I've been dreading the prospect of something bad, as in fatal, happening to Hyun-jae in 1994. Now that he's stepping up to the plate to help his family and friends, I can easily envision his returning to 1993 and taking out a hefty life insurance policy with Kwang-jae, Grandpa, and Bo-hee as beneficiaries. That way, if anything does happen to him, he'll still be able to help them out. He was too young and flaky the first time around, but I could see him doing that now. Of course, I'd be thrilled if it never has to pay out.
