Suspicious Partner: Episodes 29-30

As far as they’ve come together, Bong-hee and Ji-wook still have a long way to go when it comes to being open and honest with each other. Trusting someone is difficult when there’s so much as stake, and so much to lose. But if they can’t learn to stop holding back the truth from one another, they’re never going to have a chance as a couple, much less as partners trying to take down a killer.

EPISODE 29 RECAP

Ji-wook wakes, still cuddled up with Bong-hee after spending the night together. He’s feeling snuggly and he kisses her neck affectionately, but then he spots the photo of her as a child with her father. He freezes, recognizing the man that he sees in his nightmares, coming out of the fire that killed his parents.

Bong-hee stirs, and Ji-wook tucks her into his chest. But he can’t stop staring at the photo, and as he showers later, he remembers her telling him that she also has two fathers, and that her father also died in a fire.

Bong-hee is all smiles as she prepares for the day, and she finds Ji-wook in the kitchen making breakfast. He’s still distracted, but he shakes it off as best he can to smile at her. He’s stress-cooking again, which means there’s enough for everyone, but the food must taste terrible judging by the hilariously shocked looks on the guys’ faces.

It’s so bad that they assume Bong-hee did the cooking, but she insists it was Ji-wook, then glares at him in accusatory horror when she tastes the soup, hee. Ji-wook doesn’t even seem to hear the conversation, and Bong-hee watches him worriedly.

Though Eun-hyuk’s client was convicted of starting a fire that killed a man, another man has confessed to being the true arsonist, and he’s brought in for further questioning. He’s annoyed that Yoo-jung didn’t believe him when he turned himself in, and he says that he’s changed his mind about taking responsibility.

He leaves with Yoo-jung on his heels, and Eun-hyuk sees her trotting after the arsonist and begging him to wait. Eun-hyuk runs into Ji-hae, who seems thrilled to see him until he asks about the man Yoo-jung was talking to, and she realizes that he didn’t come to see her. She hides her business card that she was preparing to give him behind her back, once she catches on that he didn’t stop to get her number.

She tells Eun-hyuk that the guy is an arsonist, then she accidentally says that her heart caught fire and has to correct herself and say that he started a fire. She’s obviously flustered, but luckily Eun-hyuk doesn’t notice as he stares after Yoo-jung.

At the house, Ji-wook asks Chief Bang for a personal favor, and Chief Bang jokes about Ji-wook and Bong-hee registering their marriage so soon. But Ji-wook’s tortured expression quickly wipes the grin off his face.

Ji-wook says that he wants to know more about how his parents died, and (his voice falters at this) who the culprit was that set the fire. He tells Chief Bang that there’s no rush, even asking him to take his time, as if he’s not that eager to have his fears confirmed.

He spends the day in an obsessive cleaning frenzy, trying to take his mind off his worries. Later he offers to help Eun-hyuk with a case, desperate for something else to focus on. Eun-hyuk is confused but grateful, though he says that all he has right now is the arson appeal.

He’s surprised when Ji-wook says he’ll take it, since he usually avoids arson cases, but Ji-wook insists that he’ll be fine. Bong-hee also offers to help, and Ji-wook reluctantly agrees.

Both Yoo-jung and Eun-hyuk fill their partners in on the arson case—a man named Sun-il was convicted of setting the fire that killed another man, named Sung-woo. Sun-il was convicted because his daughter was hit and killed while Sung-woo was driving drunk. Sun-il had openly threatened Sung-woo, so when Sung-woo died in the fire, Sun-il was assumed to have started it.

Ji-hae is concerned about Yoo-jung’s determination to get involved, since the DA wants this case buried. She warns Yoo-jung that exposing the prosecutors’ office’s past mistakes could mean her job, just as it did for Ji-wook.

Going over the case notes is difficult for Ji-wook, and he closes his eyes to rest for a minute. Bong-hee comes upstairs and finds him sitting motionless, so she kneels beside his chair and softly traces his features with the tip of a finger.

Cupping his face in her hand, she whispers, “I can’t believe that you’re my man,” then she leaves. Once she’s gone, Ji-wook opens his eyes, having been awake the whole time.

Chief Bang brings his findings on the fire back to Ji-wook, looking very serious about what he discovered. The file includes a photo of Bong-hee’s father, Eun Man-soo, who was recorded as one of the victims of the fire. Ji-wook’s worst fears are confirmed when he sees Bong-hee listed as the man’s daughter.

The included news article from the fire, calling it a revenge case that killed two prosecutors, causes tears to spring to Ji-wook’s eyes. He begins to cry in earnest, but he jumps up and tries to hide his emotions when Chief Bang comes to talk to him. Chief Bang sees Ji-wook’s anguish, but he kindly refrains from mentioning it.

Chief Bang admits that he read the file and that he knows that it’s Bong-hee’s father who was the arson suspect. Ji-wook says that it doesn’t matter, and that Bong-hee has nothing to do with it, but he keeps saying it over and over as a question, like he’s struggling to convince himself more than anything.

Chief Bang calls Ji-wook downstairs to eat (pizza, naturally), but he stops on the stairs to watch the others from a distance. Seeing Bong-hee’s laughing face seems to relax Ji-wook a bit, and he smiles as he watches her.

That night, Ji-wook falls asleep on his couch. He wakes from another nightmare of Bong-hee’s father looming over him, to find Bong-hee standing there instead. It takes him a few moments to calm down, but then he notices the pillow in Bong-hee’s arms and asks her cheekily what it’s for.

Bong-hee warns him not to get the wrong idea, that she was just worried about his nightmares and that she didn’t have any ulterior motives. Uh-huh, sure. Ji-wook teases that he doesn’t believe her, and they both laugh. This time when he says he’s okay, it feels like he means it.

As they spoon on the couch, Bong-hee asks Ji-wook why he became a prosecutor. He tells her that his dad was a prosecutor, and she guesses that his father is probably proud of him. Ji-wook says sadly that he’s not sure about that, so Bong-hee turns to face him and asks why.

Instead of answering, Ji-wook asks Bong-hee why she became a prosecutor. She says that because of a perverted athletic judge, she stopped being an athlete and went into law, and soon she started thinking that she was meant to defend people like her father.

Ji-wook asks what kinds of people she means, and she says, “People like me. Innocent people who are misunderstood by the world and wrongfully accused.” Ji-wook starts to say something about all criminals, but he stops himself. Instead, he just hugs Bong-hee tightly, whispering that he’s sorry.

In the morning, Ji-wook wakes first and watches Bong-hee sleep. He goes to the gym, memories of his father playing over and over in his mind. He returns home to find Bong-hee waiting for him with a suspicious-looking homemade energy drink, and when he tries it, it’s as disgusting as he feared. Bless him, he does his best, but he can’t make himself finish it.

Bong-hee leans in for a good morning kiss, and Ji-wook reflexively flinches, unintentionally letting his revulsion show on his face. He quickly covers by saying that he’s stinky from working out, and though Bong-hee still looks hurt by his reaction, she tells herself he was just upset by the nasty drink.

Yoo-jung enters her apartment building’s elevator, then suddenly realizes that Ji-hae is the other passenger. They learn that Ji-hae moved to the building last week, and Yoo-jung says arrogantly that she knows she’s Ji-hae’s role model, but that following her to live in the same building is creepy.

Ji-hae mutters that the more she gets to know Yoo-jung, the more her opinion of her changes. LOL. They trade catty barbs, with Ji-hae getting the last word for once.

Eun-hyuk annoys everyone with his loud sighs, grumbling that he’s sure he saw the guy that Yoo-jung was chasing somewhere before. Finally Ji-wook snaps that he’s being distracting, and Eun-hyuk pouts at him then goes right back to his musing.

Bong-hee asks a question about one of the witnesses in Sun-il’s arson case, and it finally clicks that that’s why Eun-hyuk remembers him. He checks his notes from the original trial and finds the man’s name—Lee Joon-hae.

EPISODE 30 RECAP

Two years ago, Eun-hyuk had met Joon-hae during Sun-il’s trial, when he’d testified to seeing Sun-il leaving Sung-woo’s house after setting it on fire. But now Eun-hyuk knows that Joon-hae is an arsonist himself and finds it too much of a coincidence.

Ji-wook says that arsonists often have hero complexes, so they start fires then call the police in order to play the hero. Chief Bang adds that the police usually videotape arson investigations, because often the arsonist is hanging around to watch. They decide to find the videos from Sun-il’s case, and also to look into smaller arson investigations to see if Joon-hae’s name pops up.

Eun-hyuk starts to assign the collection of information to Chief Bang, but Chief Bang suddenly groans and clutches his side where Hyun-soo stabbed him. He makes a big deal of how much it hurts, insisting that he’s totally fine, no really, he can do all the work himself. Hee, he’s really milking it, and it works—everyone runs to get their own evidence.

In the car with Ji-wook, Bong-hee sighs that if it’s true that Joon-hae is the real arsonist, then Sun-il must be very upset at being falsely accused. Ji-wook gently argues that there’s no evidence proving Sun-il’s innocence, but Bong-hee counters that it’s at least a possibility.

Ji-wook warns her not to empathize too much, and she says she’s just keeping an open mind. Ji-wook disagrees, saying that she sounds like she’s identifying too much with Sun-il, but Bong-hee thinks that a little empathy is acceptable. She cuts him off and says curtly that she knows he dislikes it. Feeling like a jerk, Ji-wook apologizes for hurting her feelings, and Bong-hee also apologizes.

Eun-hyuk goes looking for Yoo-jung, but she’s not in her office. Ji-hae sees him and notes that they run into each other a lot lately, and when he asks where Yoo-jung is, Ji-hae says cryptically that he needn’t make up excuses to come by.

He has no clue what she means, so she points out that he’s asking her about Yoo-jung even though he has Yoo-jung’s phone number. Ji-hae smiles knowingly, but Eun-hyuk is mystified by her weird behavior and beats a hasty retreat.

When they arrive back home, Bong-hee asks Ji-wook if he’s hiding something from her. She can tell from his deer-in-the-headlights reaction that he is, but he lies and says there’s nothing. Bong-hee says that she’ll believe him, but she can’t help but ask if she’s done something wrong.

Ji-wook says that the way he’s acting isn’t because of her, but because he has something he needs to work through. Bong-hee asks if she’s not allowed to ask him about it, and Ji-wook nods unhappily.

Yoo-jung doesn’t pick up her phone when Eun-hyuk calls, so he goes to her apartment building to intercept her on her way home. Tired and cranky, Yoo-jung says he’ll have to follow her to her place if he wants to talk.

Poor Eun-hyuk looks extremely uncomfortable in Yoo-jung’s apartment, which makes her secretly smile. He tells her about his appeal case, surprised when she already knows about Joon-hae and confirms that Joon-hae confessed to setting the fire.

She tells him that her bosses want her to bury the confession, but instead she hands over a file of information on Joon-hae. Eun-hyuk asks if it’s okay for her to do this, and she sighs that she’s not sure, then sends him on his way.

But as he’s about to leave, she blurts out that he can stay the night if he wants. Eun-hyuk gapes at her, but she smiles and says she was just joking. She says that she’s a witch no matter what she does, so the tasteless joke seems to suit her, but Eun-hyuk objects to the way Yoo-jung beats herself up.

He brings up the night that Ji-wook found them together, asking Yoo-jung why she’s never told Ji-wook that nothing happened between them. She says it’s because something could have happened, then asks him why he never told either. Eun-hyuk says simply, “Because it’s true that I hurt him.”

Eun-hyuk gets a call to meet with Ji-wook and Chief Bang for drinks, and Chief Bang frowns at the two mopey sad sacks sitting across the table. His complaints about his stabbing scar go unnoticed, and when he asks what they think, Ji-wook and Eun-hyuk are all Yeah it’s great, it’ll be okay. LOL.

Chief Bang whines that he’s the one who’s raising four children at work, got stabbed, and can’t even drink because he’s still healing, so what are they so down about? Ji-wook says that everything is all his fault then smacks Eun-hyuk, who just mutters, “Me too, totally.” PWAHAHA, these two are killing me.

Many bottles of soju later, Bong-hee shows up and starts fussing, but Ji-wook and Eun-hyuk are completely drunk and adorably thrilled to see her. They beam at her and invite her to join them, but it’s her turn to drag Ji-wook’s drunk butt home.

She drops him on his bed and orders him to stay, but he leaps up to grab her and drag her in for a bear hug. He says into her neck that they should never break up, ordering her not to leave even if he tells her to go, adding, “We should only think of ourselves. Don’t leave me, okay?” Bong-hee doesn’t know why he’s saying this, but she tells him not to worry.

The next day, Eun-hyuk finds Bong-hee stress-eating her way through CEO Byun’s secret cookie stash. She just says calmly that she’ll eat them all and lie that she knows nothing of the secret stash. Eun-hyuk says that he’s ready to discuss whatever is upsetting her, but she says resolutely that what happens between her and Ji-wook stays between them.

Eun-hyuk manages to make her talk anyway by agreeing to be a cookie co-conspirator and musing that Ji-wook is acting weird lately. He says that the arson case they’re working on must remind Ji-wook of his parents’ deaths, guessing that Bong-hee is experiencing the same thing.

He tells her that Ji-wook was very traumatized because he was in the fire with his parents and witnessed everything, and also struggles with survivor’s guilt. Bong-hee nods sadly, and in voiceover we hear her ask how, looking back, she didn’t realize.

The team convene to go over their findings—although Joon-hae is only on record for attempted arson, he was on the video of the police investigation of the fire that killed Sung-woo. Ji-wook says that’s not evidence of guilt, but Eun-hyuk is certain that he’s the real arsonist. He hands Ji-wook photos of the fire scene, asking if he’ll be okay to see them, and as he leafs through them Bong-hee’s voiceover tells us that there were countless hints, “So why hadn’t I figured it out?”

During Sun-il’s appeal trial, Eun-hyuk calls arsonist Joon-hae as a witness. He asks about a certain flammable chemical called xylene, which Joon-hae pretends not to know about. But when it’s pointed out that it’s a major component of the paints he manufactures at work, Joon-hae changes his answer.

Eun-yuk says that xylene was found at the arson site, and Joon-hae claims that he doesn’t know anything about that. With a quick glance at Yoo-jung, Eun-hyuk reveals that Joon-hae was recently arrested for attempted arson, and that the accellerant found with him was the exact same mixture that started the fire two years ago.

Sitting in the audience with Ji-wook, Bong-hee has a sudden revelation. She excuses herself and goes to the hall to call her mom, telling her that their trial is going well and that she feels great, even as she fights back tears.

She grows serious and starts to ask her mother something about her father, but she changes her mind and ends the call. She sits reeling, wondering how she didn’t know. In voiceover she tells us that she read the article about her father’s accident so many times that she’d memorized the story of the victims’ family.

But somehow she never noticed that the anniversary of his parents’ deaths, which Ji-wook marks with a picnic every year, is the same as the anniversary of her own father’s death. As she recalls everything she’s been told about Ji-wook’s tragic loss, she cries, wondering how she’s never put the clues together.

At the end of the day, Eun-hyuk thanks Yoo-jung for her help. She says that she’s probably in trouble for giving him the information, but that she’ll never quit her job because Ji-wook and Eun-hyuk said they wouldn’t hire her at their firm.

As expected, District Attorney Jang calls her to his office, where he says that some people think justice is achieved through petty cases like this one. But he tells her that there’s an order to the world, and that sacrifices must be made to keep that order. We see a flashback of him saying the exact same thing to a picture of Bong-hee’s father, adding, “All I need is for you to become a murderer.” He tells Yoo-jung that there’s no room for mistakes that threaten the order of an organization, the law, or of power.

Ji-wook heads home to wait for Bong-hee, feeling unsettled at the way she left in the middle of the trial. When she calls him, he rushes out to meet her, and they go for an impromptu walk in the park. They spend the afternoon doing simple couple things like taking selfies (Ji-wook: “You’re taking a video right now, dummy.”) and eating ice cream.

As they walk together, Ji-wook seems much happier than he’s been in a while. But there’s something very sad about the way Bong-hee looks at him, and she thinks that she just wants to postpone the inevitable for one more moment, one more step.

Suddenly she stops walking and turns to Ji-wook, and he senses that something is terribly wrong. Bong-hee starts to pull her hand from his and he tightens his hold, trying to delay what’s about to happen. But she pushes his hand away and looks up at him to say, “Let’s break up.”

Epilogue.

On the first night Bong-hee and Ji-wook met, he’d been forced to take her to his place when she’d been too drunk to tell him her address. She pinned him to the couch and leaned down to kiss him, and he reached up to run his hands through her hair…

Then he grabbed a double handful of hair and yanked her off of him, jumping off the couch and shaking her away when she clamped onto his leg. Horrified at what almost happened, Ji-wook stared down at the drunk, disheveled Bong-hee, looking like a man who just narrowly survived a shark attack.

COMMENTS

Dammit, I knew it, I knew Bong-hee was going to be the noble idiot. She and Ji-wook both responded to the revelation that their fathers died in the same fire exactly as I thought they would… he was shaken but determined not to lose her, while she distanced herself as soon as she learned the truth. I thought that Ji-wook’s reaction to learning that Bong-hee’s father is the man that’s haunted his nightmares his whole life was pretty faithful to the man he’s become—he was deeply upset, and he even pulled away from Bong-hee for a while as he tried to decide what to do next, but he ultimately chose his love for her over his traumatic past. His emotional journey from denial to aversion and finally to acceptance and love felt true and realistic.

Bong-hee’s experience was just the opposite, and in a way I can understand why she is pulling away now, even though it makes me want to scream in frustration. All Bong-hee knew is that after finally showing their love for each other in the most intimate way, Ji-wook became very distant and cold for a while. So of course when she learned that their parents died in the same fire, she felt very guilty and probably assumed that he wouldn’t want anything to do with her now. She’s been hurt badly by his rejection before, so it’s natural that she would want to go ahead and end things before having to experience that pain all over again.

Part of the reason I can understand why she’s making this choice is because despite it causing problems in the past, Ji-wook is still keeping things from Bong-hee. He thinks he’s protecting her by not telling her about her father’s supposed involvement in his parents’ deaths, but you’d think that with the way it backfired when he didn’t tell her of his suspicions that Hyun-soo was the killer, he would know better by now. Bong-hee isn’t fragile, and she can handle anything difficult he might reveal. But by keeping secrets from her, it’s Ji-wook who first creates a distance between them, and I can see why Bong-hee still doesn’t fully trust him with her heart.

As for Eun-hyuk, I wasn’t really that surprised to learn that nothing really happened between him and Yoo-jung on the night that Ji-wook thought they slept together. Eun-hyuk has shown himself to be much too loyal and devoted to betray his lifelong best friend like that, so I kind of guessed a while ago that the situation was misread. And it’s just like Eun-hyuk to accept his punishment of Ji-wook’s hatred even though nothing happened, simply because it doesn’t matter if he and Yoo-jung slept together or not—what matters is that they could have, and that Ji-wook was hurt.

It feels like some of the spark has gone out of the show with Hyun-soo in his coma for two whole episodes—it’s realistic that he wouldn’t just bounce back after such a terrible injury, but his absence is definitely felt. When you have a complex and menacing villain, it makes no sense to take him out of the story right as his character is getting interesting. Not that anything is wrong with the show the way it is now, but Hyun-soo makes me feel a sort of horrific fascination whenever he’s outsmarting Ji-wook and driving him crazy in the process. I do hope that Hyun-soo wakes soon, because whether he comes out of his coma with his mind intact, or whether he does end up suffering some sort of amnesia, he brings a certain energy to the show that’s keenly missed when he’s gone.

Actually I completely get why Bong Hee did what she did. Her father had been accused of murdering Ji Wooks parents. And on top of that Ji Wook wasn't honest so its very natural to assume that he in turn would leave her. And I completely agree with Lollypip's analysis of today's episode, she is just protecting herself. She has been rejected before and if it happens the second time around, it would hurt her even more. Ji Wook loves her but he hasn't really communicated with her about their shared murky past, if he has done that than Eun Bong Hee wouldn't have felt the need to break up with him. You have to understand that Eun Bong Hee is in a more vulnerable situation right now.

I'm with you on this, especially since she does seem to have a history of bad fate with JW. JW wanted to be a prosecutor because of his dad. But defending her lost him his dream. And then it turns out her dad was known as the guy who killed JW's parents. She probably remembers all those little moments when seeing her seem to be giving JW a quick flash of PTSD.

I'm more mad at JW. Of course, Bong Hee is going to find out. She's a lawyer and she is no dummy. He should have spoken up first. i was really mad when he was acting so distant with BH and basically letting her know that he's got a secret but he won't tell her. Both of them better come out with this in the first 15 minutes of the next episode!

I am with BH as well. He should have been honest much earlier, all the acting distant is just...honesty and openness is key. Even through I live for male lead taking to get back with female lead scenes. But I have to admit I was hardly paying attention during these episodes...

I agree with y'all and with Bong Hee but I do think---that's gotta be a hard sentence to get out, "Sooo....yeah, your dad killed my parents. But I'm cool with it..." Or something less flippant. He must have felt so disloyal to his family, that he fell in love with the daughter of the man who (allegedly) killed them. And that he was choosing to stay with her instead of breaking up with her for their memories sake.

I agree with y'all. I don't like noble idiots as much as the next person, especially in drama land, but this set up is very believable. Of course, I hope that they would get over it soon enough. But this delicious stage of angst and 'forbidden' love is right up my alley right now. They love each other, they want each other, but when your past becomes your present, what does it take for that relationship to survive?
The morning after, Bong Hee definitely felt something was off. The food that JW made tasted really bad. He became cold towards her. Don't forget that moment when BH asked for a kiss and JW's sudden revulsion at that prospect was so hurtful for BH that she had to come up with an excuse for herself.
When she realized that her father, who was framed, was the accused murderer and arsonist of JW's parents, of course she would step back because JW stepped back first. 2nd, throughout Eun Hyuk's arson case, while BH was trying to find the possibility of innocence, JW was adamant that it is unlikely a misruling. So if that is any indication of JW's feeling towards her dad, how can she be with a man who hates the very existence of someone she dearly loves? 3rd, knowing that it hurts JW that she is the daughter of an accused murderer and seeing how hard he is trying to stay with her, hurts her just as much. She knows he is forcing it sometimes. She knows that on some level, her presence would hurt him, so how can she be the thorn in his side?

They just need to separate from now: 1) For JW, there's a possibility that BH's dad caused a fire that killed his parents with no hard evidence to indicate otherwise. If it were me, I don't care, I would never want to be associated with anyone that brings harm to my family. It would probably repulse me to just look at them and constantly remind me of what was done. However it's clear that he loves her but he just can't wrap his mind around the whole thing 2) On BH end, I would have broke up with JW. For one, I wouldn't want to be with a guy in whom I trigger his PTSD. Furthermore, JW was already distancing himself (not purposely but naturally), and after giving him her body and heart, that was incredibly hurtful for BH - even if there's good reason. So, separation totally makes sense for this couple at this point in time.

5

Yes. I agree with you. Bong Hee tried her best to stay, but she feel Ji Wook make some distance, most importantly he's not try to explain eventhough BH asked if she did something wrong. They did the right thing to stay separately for awhile to clear their mind. I hope they will soon make up.

I hope Bong Hee is taking the time off to prove his father didn't kill JW's parents. It's harder on her knowing her dad might have killed his parents all along. It's not something either BH or JW can easily turn a blind eye on too.

And I'm loving the angst. Come at me, forced separations and bittersweet love. Haha!

Sigh... Noble idiocy: the ultimate relationship buzzkill and my catNOPE. So frustrating.

I'd rather watch the serial murder than go through this tiresome dance again... I know they usually need to throw in angst at this point in the show but I wish the plot line and execution were more original.

Yes. The reason I hate noble idiocy is that is removes the ability of choice from the other person it's meant to protect. If they had talked to each other openly about it and then decided to break up. It wouldn't be noble idiocy.

I did actually like -JW processing the strougle and felt that it was actually pretty interesting to watch and felt authentic.
Though, BH decision to end it was congruent with her character, nevertheless it felt frustrating to watch.

Still I think overall this detour feels like a lazy writing. We've seen it a million times before (yawn), so we could see from a mile away. It was made worse because we all know that it's derived solely to create extra conflict.

Well the writing has been pretty good overall so I'll give the writter a pass for not and suffer needlessly through.

I actually don't think it was noble idiocy but will have to wait and see... I think the decision comes from the fact that they are still holding off, especially Ji Wook, so I am not mad at her, because I would have done the same thing. He didn't talk to her about what was going on... and she still believes her father is innocent. So, from her point of view he preferred to assume everything, not talk things, and even when she gave him a clue about his father presumed innocence (when they were on the couch) still he maintained his silence. Even in the date, even when he was smiling, it was like he was putting all his effort in being with her. I would not want to be with someone that hurts when he is with me, even if I know he loves me... especially if he doesn't talk about it so we can work things through. When he said to her, "don't go, even if I tell you to...", honey, that's how things work. If I am with someone, and that person tells me to go away, belief me I will leave, because you're not giving me anything to stay and if you don't talk things with me, I can't understand what is going on... I wouldn't stay with a guy that makes me feel I have to tip-toe around him because I don't understand what is going on.

BUT... like I said, we don't really know her reasons to break-up with him. If is noble idiocy, it's stupid... But she believes her father to be innocent, so I don't really believe she made the decision based on "my father killed your parents".

Okay.. let me re-explain myself..
i understand why Bong Hee did that and it's totally in character.
But the show was doing such a good job portraying the growing relationship of Ji Wook and Bong Hee, but since Hyun Soo is in a coma they're using another plotline and they're bringing us a few steps back.
In the last 10mins of the episode I was like "I already saw this".
It's just sad that they had to use Noble Idiocy to go on with the plot.

I totally agree that they need to get back on the Hyun Soo train. There's plenty of material there to explore and I think that the murder/thriller is an interesting aspect of the show that they put on the back-burner for a while. However, I don't think it's Noble Idiocy on BH part, because it makes sense for our couple break up and separate at this point in time. Love isn't enough...sometimes.

But it is only noble idiocy if she's doing it for his sake... to sacrifice herself for his happiness... and I don't think that is what's happening here.

Exactly! They've always been philosophically different as lawyers, and this episode revisited that from two angles: their argument about empathy vs allowing for multiple perspectives on the current case, and the comments he made about criminals in general when she said her dad was innocent.

Despite witnessing first hand prosecutors who falsify evidence as well as more innocent mistakes, Ji Wook has always assumed the guilt of anyone charged with a crime (and he's equally quick to judge in his personal life, as we learned with the timing of the Eun Hyuk/Yoo Jung reveal). Once he decides you're guilty, he stops considering other possibilities.

Bong Hee has never wavered in believing her father innocent. But she also knows Ji Wook well enough to know that unless she can definitively prove it, he'll always believe her father is guilty.

So, I don't think it's Noble Idiocy. It's that their opposing views on her father are just a plain old deal breaker.

I agree with this with the exception of saying that Ji Wook was quick to judge what happened between Eun Hyuk and Yoo Jung. From what I remember of the scene (and I've never said I have a great memory) Ji Wook goes to his (neglected) girlfriend's house fairly late in the evening with forgive-me flowers to find her in her bedroom (?) with another man as they are straightening their clothes--after seeing a few items of clothing strewn from the door to the bedroom. I don't think most people would walk into that situation and be all---so, random rain shower on the way home or what? And even though he was wrong with his assumption that they slept together both felt guilty enough in what was happening or about to happen in that room that correcting the assumption that they actually had sex wasn't an important distinction to make.

2

isa--good point. I guess I didn't mean so much the moment's interpretation (which I agree looked totally like something had happened), but that he let that moment be the conclusion, rather than asking for explanations.

0

This is in response to your response to me--the reply button seems to have wandered away.

I would think, though, I've never been cheated on so this is just an assumption, that it wouldn't be his responsibility to ask those questions. I would think in that moment and in the days following he would be devastated. These two people have been his best friends for his entire life and they just betrayed him in this horrible way. I would think that its their responsibilty to offer explanations. We haven't been shown exactly how they spent the aftermath of that night but Eun Hyuk at least seems like he's never tried to explain what happened until the show started which picks up a couple of years later. It would seem if the friendship/relationship was important to either of them at all that they would have tried to get him to listen to what happened and so far we haven't been shown that. I really need them to explain this because I LOVE EUN HYUK and while I'm glad that he didn't actually physically cross that line I want to know if all he was doing for these past few years was pester Ji Wook when they were in the same place with finger hearts and aegyo. After what he did, or allowed Ji Wook to think that he did--as much as I love him, I'm not sure I would be super forgiving him of him either.

I seem to have fallen into a tangent.

2

I love Ji-wook as much as anyone (heart eyes), but dude needs to learn about honesty/openness in relationships. By not telling Bong-hee what was going on but still acting frustrated, he came across as passive-aggressive, even if that wasn't his intention. He left emotionally long before she left physically. I'm consistently glad this writer writes Bong-hee so intelligently that she figures him out, but that doesn't excuse his dysfunctional behavior. They were both on the dysfunction train in this ep; it's just one of them emotionally pulled away so the other physically did.

100% AGREE with you. I was actually more frustrated with Ji Wook than Bong Hee this ep. I couldn't excuse him holding back the truth from her as him protecting her anymore this time. I don't even think this was his reasoning either. When he told her not to leave him even if he pushes her away at some point (he already was), he lost me there for being unfair to her while being so aware of it. I can't imagine what he must have gone through just trying to process the whole thing, and that last scene with him not wanting to let go of her hand broke me, but I'm kind of glad that these two will have to deal with this now. I want to see if they can get off the dysfunction train, learn from it and make it work eventually.

So agree JW is super nice but he needs to realize that in a relationship honesty is the most important bit.BH is an adult and has always been quick on the uptake, did he really think his distant behaviour would go unnoticed???
When he fliched in response to BH asking for a kiss..my heart broke for her.
I thinki breaking up wasnt noble idiocy here, it was BH takinh a stance saying i will find out mote and price my father innocent n then lets talk abt a relationship.

I can't remotely blame Bong Hee. Ji Wook RECOILED from her when she leaned in to kiss him. She was patient, she gave him space, she asked, and she had to deal with his complete change of personality after sleeping together. And then she had to put the pieces together on her own.

Ji Wook isn't a monster, and he obviously was overcoming his initial instinct which is noble, but she was exposed to that negativity without knowing why. Can you imagine how terrible it would be to realize your boyfriend thinks your dad killed his parents but is struggling to get past it? Every time he looks at Bong Hee he thinks about her dad, and SHE has spent her life convinced of her dad's innocence. Of course she would need to break things off! She's not going to keep sleeping with a man who believes her father is a murderer.

I'm frustrated with both of them, and this episode was really hard to watch. They say they're here for each other and have a mature relationship and yet when something comes in between them they start keeping secrets and get upset. This kind of angst coming at this time is just...a flop for me...it's like the momentum for the murder mysteries were gaining full speed and then all of a sudden they slammed on the brakes for BH and JW to go through this epiphany. I was all for it, but now they're starting to lose me..Sigh. Hope they make up for it by picking the murderer storyline in full force.

Thanks for the recap! Much like the last episode, I missed HS's presence - he adds so much to the story.

-Welp, we got our dose of Noble Idiocy. At first, JW's reaction to his discovery was worrying me, but when he begged BH not to break up I figured we were in the clear. For the last 5-10 minutes of the ep, I was chanting "Don't do anything stupid!" to BH but clearly she didn't listen. Yes, JW wasn't honest with her (and tbh, I'm not even sure how that conversation would have gone), but I don't feel like that's why she broke up with him - it was definitely more along the lines of the classic noble idiot deciding to make all the decisions without consulting the other person in the name of protecting them.

-Okay but for me, the biggest plot twist of the episode was finding out YJ and EH didn't even sleep together way back when. That makes EH's guilt over what happened so much more poignant, because he considers what he did (and/or didn't do) just as bad for hurting JW in the first place.

I know there are probably bigger storylines to feast on but... nothing happened between Eun-hyuk and Yoo-jung all along?! I'm probably in the minority here, but that's one huge thing I didn't see coming!

I guess the theme for this episode is honesty, because we also have Ji-wook and Bong-hee tiptoeing around The Issue rather than talking about it. I'm sure they needed (and still need) some time to digest the possibility that their parents were involved in the same accident, but I wish they'd take the leap together. They work best when they're on the same team, and I can't wait for them to nail the truth about the fire.

- More cute moments without being followed by truck of dooms or noble idiocy or whatever drama tropes we fear

Thank you Lollypip for the recap, for Eun-Hyuk and Yoo Jung ‘betrayal , I guess it’s like in Fight my way, the fact that they spent the night together regardless of if they were going to do it or not, it’s cheating.

I don't think it was noble idiocy ,ji wook was distance and cold just after a night they had togheder poor girl had no idea what happened she asked him ,he didn't tell...she finds every thing herselfherself. in this situation its nesseccary to make some distance because ji wook trauma is so big even if he choose love he can't ignor that she is a daughter of his parent killer.

5

Required fields are marked *

I agree. It has the noble idiocy angle but its not totally a noble idiocy act.
Actually JW holding onto their relationship is unhealthy. He clearly knows the branch is breaking yet he pretend that its okay and he even added weights in it (i.e. him lying about the truth and showing a noticeable distance with her), so in the end he got to experience a hard fall.
He clearly knows BH will act that way so why he didn't tell her sooner. BH is not dumb and she's pretty independent herself.
She has a hunch and when she completely understand the situation, she felt betrayed. Or I felt betrayed for her. JW didn't even tried digging much into the case and assumed her dad is the real assailant. So its understandable that BH did was a must.
I feel sorry for her because she didn't just lose a father from a tragic fire but she also has to bare with all the people pointing and believing that her father is the one who caused that and killed JW's parents.

7

Required fields are marked *

I agree. I think she took Ji Wook's recent distant behavior as a sign that this wasn't going to work. I think she realized that he was trying to convince himself that it was going to work, but the trauma is really big.

I'm a little indignant on behalf of BH, who seems to be getting more sidelined in recent episodes in favor of JW. She lost a dad too. And he died with the label of murderer. She's not the only one with trauma even though the drama depicts it as mostly a JW issue.

10
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yup. I see the issue as, Jiwook KNOWS Bonghee really believes her dad is innocent, but he believes her dad is guilty. Granted, he was traumatized as a kid by her dad's face, whatever role he may or may not have played in the fire, but the fact that he can't accept that the dad might be innocent is what's driving Bonghee away, not some noble idiot need to protect Jiwook.

This is the polar opposite of Healer, where the couple set out together to investigate and prove the dad innocent, which is what Jiwook should have done here.

5

Required fields are marked *

I loved Lollypip's analysis! It's not surprising for BH to become the noble idiot and JW to keep everything to himself (again!). From BH's point of view, JW had been pushing her away subtlely, had not been forthcoming even after she had explicitly asked him if he is hiding anything. BH must have been really disappointed and hurt when JW did not explain his issues and worse, did not even want her to ask further. JW may need time to sort out his feelings but if he cannot trust BH enough to truthfully share his concerns and feelings, BH will be hurt again and again. The history and misfortune of the two families also make the issue more complicated and it is not fair to BH even if JW believed he could iron out these problems on his own.

i dont understand bong hee at all. really, if you love him so much then understand what he is going through. since she knows now about jiwook parents death she should be by his side. but, she want to be an idiot, noble or not. even if she does not know he knows it too or not, ending a relationship on your own is not right. where is the difference between her and someone who left their partner one day, all of a sudden. she is close to 'she who shall not be named' IMHO.

that drinking scene was so funny, i luff it. jiwook n eunhyuk drunk are such bears. their reaction to mr.bangs talk was gold. eunhyuk 'me too' is as lovely as him.

why is mr.byun not attending the meetings? did i miss something?!

hyunsoo, wakeup soon. story needs to move forward. at times, i feel the last few EPs might be rushed at this pace.

usually, when we see couple in a drama, at times they make us wonder if they can stand the test of time. their lives together start after the show ends, and we think how they will be together in future. like aera dong man, we know nothing can break them apart, coz they are clear with their desires and wishes. but some like the drinking solO couple might not be together forever.
honestly with these two, they seem likely to fall in second category. i wish they are not

also, with yoo jung, i sympathize with her, coz she didn't get complete trust of her guy. it would have been different if bonghee was in her place..

This episode was definitely a snooze for me as well. Except for the office/Chief Bang hijinks, those I could live on all day!! I love love love that he's the glue the binds them all together. It's really a shame because it's a symptom of a larger trend because the show has lost momentum for me and I'm still watching it, but I'm no longer excited and squeeing over it. I loved it from ep 1-20 and haven't felt the same magic since. I'm thinking that this is a show that goes down better as a marathon, since that was how I watched the first 20 episodes, but I also miss the hilarious, sarcastic zippiness that the OTP had in the beginning. One of the cutest scenes for me was when she gets released from jail and comes back to her apartment to find that he'd written next to all of her complaints about him "Same here." They're still cute and sweet like puppies (and I hate to say this about JCW and NJH) but dare I say it, they've gotten boring as a couple. :(

Going back to today's ep, the second the scenes of Ji-wook and Bong-hee doing cute couple things at the end of the episide I just KNEW that we were going to get a breakup and a dose of Noble Idiocy. I'm hoping the show can take us quickly through the angst and get to the heart and the meat of what makes this show a great watch (Hyun-soo! The murder-solving! Office hijinks! Chief Bang and his all-knowing ahjussi smile! Eun-hyuk and Bong-hee making fun of Ji-wook! The lolarity of BH and JW's parents never approving of their relationship! All that great, great stuff).

On a sidenote, LOVING the developments with Eun-hyuk's character and his interactions with Ji-hae and Yoo-jung. Yoo-jng is definitely more of an enjoyable character now that the drama is showing her in her element of working as a prosecutor, and having her interact with the rest of the main characters in that capacity (instead of solely as an ex-gf) .

The thing is Ji Wook doesn't get to decide that now that he's been through the emotional journey from horror at realizing that Bong Hee's father is potentially his parents' murderer to acceptance that it doesn't matter and all that matters is that he loves Bong Hee alone. It's something they should both discuss, and work through together.

Also I wouldn't say he accepted it very well, he spent a lot of the episode indirectly trying to say that he didn't for a second believe that Bong Hee's father could be innocent like she believes.

We want to call Bong Hee a noble idiot for breaking up with him but he's the real noble idiot. Trying to hide the truth, repress the horror that he feels which comes out in such hurtful ways (ie looking repulsed when Bong Hee tried to kiss him), and things like calling Bong Her too empathic towards the criminals even when she's justified in feeling so, those are all signs that Ji Wool hasn't accepted it.

What would've made more sense is for Ji Wook to tell Bong Her the truth, tell her that he still loves her regardless and then believe in her when she says her father was innocent. I mean they're both capable lawyers who could've worked together to look into the case again and perhaps prove that Bong Hee's father is innocent. If I was Ji Wook, I would've latched onto the fact that Bong Hee thinks her father is innocent and tried my hardest to prove it.

Also to speak to Bong Hee's reasons for breaking up, maybe they don't all have to do with the guilt she feels. Maybe it's also partially the fact that Ji Wook doesn't trust her belief in her father. Although a little talking on both their parts would fix that...

But we're at the last few episodes and angst is a drama requirement so angst we will get.

Everyone lookout! Angst has walked through the door ☹️. I've never been so impressed by Nam Ji Hyun and Ji Chang Wook as actors. They were able to carry out an entire conversation with body language alone??. That breakup scene was impeccably done. We all knew what she was going to say before she even uttered the words.

I must be one of the very few viewers who really likes Yoo Jung. I read a lot of comments of how she's heartless and never showed true remorse, but I never for one moment, felt that way, people grieve in different ways. Yoo Jung has been beating herself up for what happened in her own way. While Eun Hyuk played the injured puppy and wore his heart on his sleeve, Yoo Jung cynically refers to herself as a bitch and a cheat and makes off hand jokes and cynical remarks about herself and the situation. I never doubted that she would like to reconcile with her friends, which I hope they can do before the series is over.

Bong Hee entering noble idiocy phase is not helping either. I hope they don't draw out the angst for too long. Maybe there would be a time skip where Hyun Soo gets healed and resumes his role as (amnesiac?) killer. Maybe Bong Hee moves past her noble idiocy and chooses love above all else like Ji Wook. BTW sorely missed Lawyer Byun in this episode!

I definitely don't see Ji-wook as having made that entire journey to resolution yet. He's still acting ambivalently throughout. He may be trying to accept Bong-hee in spite of everything, but he's clearly struggling with his choice. Her response to leave is a response to the underlying feeling of tension he's creating. I don't see them as behaving all that differently. He's withdrawn from the relationship emotionally, so she withdraws physically. That's character consistent for both of them. Bong-Hee is forcing out into the open the emotional separation Ji-wook already initiated. They both need to talk it out, but he pulled away first, and Bong-hee's actions reflect his own, just in the practical sense.

Even if Ji-Wook appears to be convinced that Bong Hee's father was the culprit in the murder of his parents, he heard from Bong Hee that her dad was a victim of a frame up so that should have cast a doubt in his mind.

My love for this show wane. The only good thing about this drama right now is its OSTs. Can't believe that this came from the same writer as Hello Monster.

Wow, I really don't agree with any of you. I don't think BH is being a Noble Idiot AT ALL. She's dealt with one lying, cheating boyfriend. She's been very clear with JW that she won't tolerate another. She gave him PLENTY of opportunities to be honest with her, and he failed miserably. Plus, while failing, he made her feel unhappy, unsettled, and possibly worst of all, UNWANTED, immediately after they slept together. She had every reason to end things. I'd break up with him under those circumstances as well.

I understand JW's reticence to be honest with her, but he was clearly the one who was wrong here. And not only was he lying to her, he was lying to himself. Obviously he was NOT able to go back to the way things were after he found out this new information, as evidenced by his behavior, and the only conclusion he came to was that HE needed BH in his life. Never once considering how she is affected by his behavior or the circumstances surrounding their parents' deaths.

I also missed our coma man. That's all I have to say about that.

I love Chief Bang. LOVE him. <3 <3 <3

I'm annoyed that nothing happened between EH and YJ. Talk about Noble Idiots!!! I do agree that it's still cheating even if the sex didn't happen, and that JW would have been hurt anyway, but honesty, people!!! How hard is it?

Finally, I think the Chief Prosecutor may have set the fire that killed BH's dad and JW's parents. BH's dad found out that he was being set up by that jerk, tried to save them, and was killed along with them in the process. It makes SO MUCH SENSE.

I so agree with you, Bong Hee's decision to break up with Ji Wook was not out of sheer idiocy. Ji-Wook distanced himself from her, understandably out of guilt, that's why he said he is not sure if his Dad is proud of him BUT Bong Hee already told him that her Dad was just like her, a victim of false circumstances. He didn't believe Bong Hee? Should Bong Hee get terribly sick or be the next victim of Hyun Soo before he wakes up and realize Bong Hee's worth in his life? I feel disappointed that there has to be the usual break up and make up plot.

I really think JW has a loooong way to go to regain her trust and fix this ailing relationship. I hope he starts investigating the fire. There have been a lot of clues implicating BH's ex's father...he believes in the "greater good" of the prosecutor's office...that it's okay to let innocent people take the blame in order for the prosecutors to always look perfect. BH's dad was almost certainly innocent. Both the Chief Prosecutor and JW's dad almost certainly realized that. It seems likely that JW's (by all accounts, very honest) father was going to "diminish" the prosecutor's office (as JW did) by making that open to the public. The Chief Prosecutor has established his character (almost a caricature, to be honest) at this point to be one where the ends justify any means. Never a good thing...he has repeatedly displayed several VERY sociopathic tendencies. That said, finding out that her dad is innocent will hardly redeem JW, as far as I'm concerned. He still needs to show that he can be honest with her, and that he trusts her judgment. The second one, to be fair, she kind of dropped the ball on in thinking HS was innocent. She's also had a few other lapses in judgment. But still, if you love someone, you have to trust them, believe in them, and understand them. This breakup was inevitable, even without the super dramatic storyline.

I don't think Chief Prosecutor set the fire. I think he was in the same position as YJ and JW when they were told to purposely bury the cases. The difference was that the Chief Prosecutor went along with the command, while YJ and JW did not, and that is how he got promoted.

Thank you for the recaps, LollyPip, I was waiting for it. And thank God for episode 31-32 tonight, because if I have to wait a week for the next episodes, I’ll be ready to tear my hair out.

That epilogue. HAHAHA. Like expected, nothing happens that night. But the way Bong-hee clings to Ji-wook’s legs like that, pffft. So she has done so even from the beginning, eh?

That's it. I won't comment on everything else, because it's so.... ugh, makes me want to rant. So, best not.

I think I understand WHY Bong-hee went all Noble Idiot on us, but it doesn't make it any less frustrating. Drunk or not, Ji-wook actually begged her never to leave him. As the viewer, seeing Ji-wook struggle to come to terms with the situation and still choose Bong-hee, only for her to break up with him, is maddening. Sure, there were some issues with honesty between them, but who wants to tell their significant other that their father is a potential murderer of their family? I feel for Bong-hee, I really do. She must have been really confused at Ji-wook's behavior, but if she can put two and two together in regards to the situation itself, she should also be able to recognize Ji-wook's efforts to stay with her despite his emotional turmoil. If he's willing to stay by her side no matter what, she should have realized that leaving him would only worsen the situation, especially on Ji-wook's end. I mean, you guys have seen how he gets when he's lonely. He needs Bong-hee's emotional support and affection, and the last thing he wants or needs is for her to leave him. Hopefully their separation won't last very long. One 30 minute episode tops!

On a different note, I think the writers could have dealt with Hyun-soo's accident better. I have the memory of a goldfish and just having him missing for this long made me completely forget he existed. I feel like they could have done a better job incorporating him into the episode in subtle ways, instead of almost completely putting the whole murderer-in-coma situation aside.

I don't think it's nobel idocy at all. She isn't breaking up, because she think's it is the best for him. At least it's only a part of it. Of course she sees he is hurting. But he also didn't give her the chance to deal with it. He knew she thought her father was innocent, but it's too soon for him to even consider, that he might have actually been innocent. How could she overcome that? Just wait, until he cleared his head and than live with the knowledge, that for him her father killed her parents? Or try to convince him? Who knows, what might fester of it in the future?

I don't blame him for his reaction, and I don't think she does either. But right now both are hurting and not talking about it and staying together won't change that.

I was so proud of Ji-wook. I think his reaction to the news was reasonable, but he fought against being a noble idiot that he was so tempted to be. But, then there is Bong-hee. I think lollypip has a good point about Bong-hee misreading the situation because Ji-wook closed her off first, but I still want her to confront the situation head on instead of assuming things. They really do need to learn how to be honest with each other and have sincere conversations with each other. At this point, Eun-hyuk and Bong-hee have more honest conversations and so does Ji-wook and Chief Bang. Now if only they would have these conversations with each other.

I agree, Bong Hee is frustrating in this situation. The look on Ji Wook's face was painful to see. I hope they learn to face their trust issues as a couple instead of facing things individually.

The more I learn about Eun Hyuk, the more I want him to be happy and get the love that he deserves. I actually want to see more of him than Ji Wook or Bong Hee, haha

I know Chief Bang has been back a while, but he was truly missed and it's such a treat to have him back. Such a mother hen. I just love his dynamic with the group.

I'm completely for Bong-hee's decision to break up this time. In fact, I'm not even sure we can consider this noble idiocy. Ji-wook's body language was screaming rejection - being emotionally distant right after they slept together, not giving her that kiss, etc. The couple *needs* the break up, because this isn't a case of "we stick together and we prove your father's innocence", (aka Healer). Never once did Ji-wook think that Bong-hee's father might have been framed (although that's not his fault). He already labelled him the criminal, so right now, he can't accept Bong-hee's fully, and it shows. They need the separation!

I would like to start by saying that I have never before commented on a show before. But this show is really special. It’s like a precocious child – brilliant, charming but sometimes self-centered and infuriating. There are so many things that I would like to say about the show, but I’ll focus on the last few episodes because they encapsulate for me what I love about this show, and what I love…less.
Starting with the less. Whywhywhywhywhy has the show abruptly abandoned the plotline of JHS? Dong Ha is magnetic as JHS, and every scene with him is incredibly compelling. Kudos to Dong Ha for making JHS an object of both fear and pity, both terrifying and tragic.
But…I can’t be completely unhappy about this self-indulgent little off-road excursion because it allowed NJH to give an utterly moving performance as EBH. The essence of EBH is her honesty, and the last 2 episodes, in which she and NJW begin and almost immediately suspend their relationship shows this quality so clearly. At the arcade, she doesn’t pretend to be bad at games; at the laundromat, she asks for the present that she knows NJW wants to give her; when she kisses him, she is so open and transparent that she desires him just as much as he desires her.
When NJW suddenly turns distant after discovering who EBH’s father is, EBH asks him point blank what’s wrong, and he refuses to tell her. And it is this decision by NJW to bear this awful weight by himself that, IMHO, makes NJW, not EBH, the Noble Idiot – noble because he wants to protect her, idiotic because for some reason, he just can’t or won’t understand that EBH is strong and smart enough to bear all of that and more.
Ultimately, EBH’s decision to break up with NJW felt to me completely in keeping with her character. Because she herself is so honest, she needs the man she loves to be equally so; with her, but even more importantly, with himself. Because of her incredible sensitivity to NJW, she understands instinctively that being with her, given his life-defining tragedy, would force him to lie to himself that it doesn’t matter that EBH’s father is the man he sees in his darkest nightmares. And it is clear that NJW values honesty and truth just as much as EBH – hence his calling to be a prosecutor, hence his career-destroying refusal to conceal evidence. Hence his desperate, drunken plea for EBH to not let him break up with her (and that's really key - that he recognizes he might not be strong enough to stay with her), to not worry about the rest of the world and focus on just the two of them.
Throughout the final, heartbreaking date, it seemed to me that EBH was hoping against hope that NJW would be open and honest with her, even as she knew it would not happen. Instead, NJW seemed to be willing himself to act like nothing was wrong - to fake it until he could make it. There have been so many beautiful moments in this show, but the subtle interplay of love and joy and sadness in this scene…to me, it is close to perfect...

Aw, thanks so much. I love this comment to bits.

It's often at these points in a show when most viewers find it easier to rant on what could have been and I get it. I have my reservations about this detour, as well. I definitely don't think they needed to put Hyun-soo's plot-line on hold to explore their past issues, especially when he was the source of so much excitement in the show. Lol, though, I guess I'll just appreciate them acknowledging the reality of how long a recovery takes?

And, because of the emotional connection I feel to the characters, I can't simply take myself out of the story at this point. The show has done really well for me in that regard. So, despite the lack of Hyun-soo and escalation of DA Jang's manipulation plot, I find I was able to get a lot out of this episode as well. For example, I felt for Ji-wook's effort to take on the arson case, even if there was also so much wrong with his way of handling the revelation about their fathers. You are so right about him being the Noble Idiot here. But I admired that for once the Noble Idiot was trying to be one for the sake of preserving the relationship, instead of giving up on it for the sake of the other. It was a flawed decision, but the show displays its emotional intelligence through Bong-hee's acknowledgement of that.

It makes sense that most viewers would associate the words "Let's Break up" with noble idiocy, but you really can't call Bong-hee one in this case. My only disappointment is that these words didn't come after a discussion about why she came to this decision. I admit, I do feel a bit of frustration at that because, though his behavior may have been presumptuous with regards to her feelings, I would have liked to see her take his drunken plea to heart and at least fight her knee-jerk decision a bit to really hash things out with him first. That said, I can, at least, fully expect her to own up to her reasons honestly next episode and that is a lot more healthy than what Ji-wook is trying to do.

When I think back on it, Bong-hee has always been hesitant about sharing her past with Ji-wook because she probably feels so vulnerable about sharing her belief in her father's innocence, especially with someone so prejudiced against criminals. The impact her own case had on his mindset has already been lessened quite a bit by the Hyun-soo incident. It kind of makes me wish the whole fated connection was a fluke and merely brought out these painful differences in them, because, at its core, I find this conflict between them compelling. But I do like that the writer is using this childhood angst to explore their clashing beliefs because that's more than I can say for most dramas that include this trope.

I adore all your words on BH and how you described the show in general. Because that's exactly how I feel. It's frustrating, but still so charming and engaging that I'm never reduced to eye-rolls, like I have been a lot lately (and that...

Agree with what you said. Totally. Although I much prefer HS being the main protagonist and all (Dong Ha is doing a fantastic job!) I enjoy taking a step back form all the suspense too as, in real life there are moments and beats in one's life where there is a lull and a moment to take stock.

Where JW and BH are at now is important - things need to come out in the open and tackled head on. Much as I'm an advocate for communication - there are times when it's easier said than done more so for the people involved. Whist I don't necessarily agree with their methods - I can understand where BH and JW are coming from.

Am I the only one who thinks that there is NO WAY that our OTP couple can be together unless it could be definitively proven that BH's dad was not the arsonist/murderer. How could they have a relationship when they would have to avoid talking about or supporting each other at their dad/parent's death, relations with other family members. It is plot hole that the connections wasn't revealed earlier.
No matter how strong the relationship, there is no way that it can work if one Father is the acknowledged (even by one party) killer of the other partner's beloved parents.

Of course Bong-hee's dad is not guilty. I've seen this whole "my daddy maybe killed your daddy" trope in dozens of kdramas and every single time they are falsely accused. EVERY SINGLE TIME. I see nothing in SP that indicates that the writers would be willing to go against the grain here. I don't agree that there's no way for it to work if it were true that the father killed the other's father. It's only a problem when one half of the couple believe they are innocent and the other believes they are guilty. As long as both believe the person is guilty it could work out. It's not fair to make the child partly responsible for their parent's actions, in those cases many children may easily believe in their parent's guilt and hate them. In this case since BH's dad is innocent, once Ji-wook is convinced of this fact, the problems will be resolved since they will both agree.

I liked this episode in terms of performances, the lead couple did a great job conveying all those emotions. I can't really blame any of them for how they behaved, it was true to both characters:
On JW: in his school of law, innocence is much harder to prove than guilt,a result of living as a victim of a crime(he's lost parents, both father and mother, and was witness to it,that's just huge!) and a prosecutor for years. It's not that he doesn't want to tell BH about it, it's more like he simply can't, he's just the kind of person who needs to figure things out with thought first and then get to actual words, he needs to be good with his words,he didn't know what to tell her, and he was rightfully scared of hurting her more if he was to talk before he had come to terms with it himself, yes...honesty is the key and i also believe so, but it's also important to know your way around your words and confusing emotions and it takes a little bit of time.(it doesn't help that i kinda think BH would've done the same thing even if he had told her, and he also seemed to think so), and yes it's still difficult for him to believe her father innocent, but that also means that he's actually coming to terms with a much more difficult thing which is what if her father really was responsible, and by the end of episode he was actually doing better that before, which meant it was slowly working for him.

About BH, let's not forget she's not all that honest either since she was also hiding what she had discovered about HS before.for me, she's not more honest than JW, but more true to her own feelings actually, she's the person of her heart, while JW is more trusting of his mind. I think separation was inevitable and i don't see her as a noble idiot.it's because the issue runs deeper than 'my father killed your parents', they're also different when it comes to being a lawyer, they just have different views, up until now they could use it to their benefit because nothing personal was involved, but now is different and i completely get BH's decision.but i just think they could've done with time and space and not an actual breakup, until they had found their emotional ground with the matter and were able to talk to each other.
Side notes: yessss i knew you wouldn't do that EH❤, i love u eunho hyung...and i miss u HS?
