[Staff Spotlight] Get to know TeriYaki

Explain your username (and/or avatar).

My username is inspired by my first name, Teri. I asked for input from my kids and when one of my sons suggested it, the search was over. My avatar is inspired by Pinocchio, a particular favorite, not only because it’s a great drama, but because two of my sons got hooked and joined me for every episode.

What is the first drama that you watched (or the first drama that made an impression)?

The first K-drama that I ever watched was You’re Beautiful. Our family attended the birthday party for a girl who is a serious K-pop fan and she received the DVD set as a gift. She couldn’t wait to watch it and we ended up watching the first episode that night. After that, I had to see the rest of the drama and I was hooked.

Tell us about a job or two that you’ve had in the past.

I once worked for the Research and Development division of a major oil company in a gas chromatography lab. It was all very high-end, sophisticated equipment just like you see on TV in crime labs. Trust me, the work isn’t at all glamorous, no matter how great television shows make it it look.

Have you ever lived a moment that you thought belonged in a drama?

I was shopping at a grocery in Little Tokyo in Los Angeles recently and the whole outing felt like it belonged in a drama.

What’s your favorite drama you recapped?

Defendant is my favorite so far (granted I haven’t recapped too many). The show was well directed and edited and I was able to appreciate that more fully because I recapped the show.

What drama genres do you especially like?

I like romantic comedies for when I’m in the mood for something light and entertaining, family oriented shows, and suspenseful shows when I want something edgier.

What drama genres do you especially dislike?

I really don’t enjoy shows that deal with the supernatural. I like to sleep at night.

Is there a drama character you’ve ever strongly identified with, and why?

Ha No-ra (Choi Ji-woo) of Twenty Again. I know what it’s like to raise sons, send them off to college and contemplate the next stage of life.

What drama character would you want to be?

Jung Soo-young (Lee Hana) from High School King of Savvy, because she ends up with Seo In-gook’s character, Lee Min-seok, and they live quirkily ever after.

What was your major in school?

I majored in biology and then pursued an M.B.A.

What’s a random skill you have?

I’m pretty good at baking bread. I’m regularly asked to supply homemade rolls when I attend a potluck.

Favorite non-Korean movie and/or TV show?

What are those?

Which Hallyu celebrity would you actually want to meet and spend an hour with?

Choi Ji-woo. She seems elegant, yet approachable. I would love to hear her talk about her long and impressive career.

Which of the 7 deadly sins would be your undoing? (Pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, or sloth.)

I’m going to have to go with sloth on this one. There is a scary closet, or two, in my house that prove the point.

Your favorite drama has an unholy alliance with your most hated drama and produces a mutant baby drama. Describe the plot.

I’m sorry, I don’t really have a most hated drama, I bail before I get that far. There are too many good dramas to watch and so little time.

By the way, this is the first time there's no mutant drama.

More than nice, Ms. TeriYaki is smart. The first rule in order to have a nice K-Drama watching experience is this one: choose your Dramas wisely ? . I know sometimes a Catnip intercepts us or we trust an usually good writer/director/actor(actress) to the bitter end, but that shouldn't be.

Wait - I saw one of the comments, and I somehow always have this preconceived notion that most of us are female... are you? I didn't find it written anywhere in this write-up that you were male so I just assumed you were female too!

I actually bail on dramas that I hate even more I finish them too. I don't even bother starting properly on some, much less hate on them.

Choi Ji-woo may not be my favorite K-actress but I have a soft spot for her. She is one of the few faces on tv that I became familiar with when I first started watching K-dramas.
She is my mom's favorite and she loves her to pieces in Winter Sonata. She'd watch anything with Choi in it.

She does have an impressive career. Staring in some of the biggest hits on tv.

Your name is so yummy and it's making me hungry lol.

Love having you here on DB TeriYaki!

“The Research and Development division of a major oil company in a gas chromatography lab” sounds like a perfect setting for a drama with evil conglomerate, and powerful CEO aided by corrupt officials. Did you envision yourself as the righteous lab tech trying to right what’s wrong ethically in that world, and maybe save the earth in the process?

Me three!!!. I don't hate horror per se, but sadly horror these days mostly degenerated to revolting. On the other hand, some Dramas like Master's Sun are so well and tastefully done that it becomes an element of an extended world and part of the narrative. They are not there just for the shock.

I still remember a tale from the ex of one of my best friends in college, she was staying alone in a friend's apartment and she loved to see horror movies (we were like 20 years old then?). The one that scared the soul out of her was one with a suggestive title like "He knows she is all alone". That one didn't let her sleep ? . Poor lady!!!.

Hi TeriYaki! LOL I have the same answer as you about any favorite non-Korean movie/TV show. Well, I completely stopped watching any non-Korean shows. I used to like them years ago, but got tired of the multi-season format and there were too many enticing kdramas instead.

I was an avid Dr. Who and Sherlock nut. While waiting for what felt like forever between seasons, I stumbled upon a Yoon Shi-yoon drama that I shall not name again; even though it was a crazy show by the end, I was hungry for MOAR k-dramas, and I've yet to look back.

Hi TeriYaki

Glad to read you. I no longer know non-Korean TV shows too. Non-Korean Movies, I may get to watch, but not many. Somehow, after becoming familiar with kdrama, other kinds of shows do not captivate much any more.

I look forward to reading more of you!

Your "What are those?" response in reference to non-Korean movie and/or TV show made me laugh! ..... But I can relate as I'm perilously close to reaching that level of non-familiarity with "other" shows.

Loving the biology background because there's always room for science.

Thank you for sharing some details about yourself TeriYaki and thanks for your recaps.

Maybe I'll be you when I grow up! Love to see the STEM people on Dramabeans. I majored in biology as well. I also don't have a drama I hate because I don't have the time to stick with something that doesn't interest me. Dramabeans also helps with this! You guys steer me clear of the bad ones!

Hi, TeriYaki, are you afraid of ghosts? why do you dislike the supernatural?

*randomly*: I wonder if human rights apply to vampires... I am in the support team for all supernaturals, even the evil ones - they are just misunderstood, you know, and had a rough childho... um, origin.

now I want a show with a counsellor for the supernaturals.

"I’m sorry, I don’t really have a most hated drama, I bail before I get that far. There are too many good dramas to watch and so little time."
I have never understood people who stick with a drama that drives them up the wall. Then again, I might be able see their point because while I stopped watching a few shows that I thought were the stupidest things ever, I have kept up with recaps just to see how it ends. Usually, these shows have actresses I love.

Pleasure to read you TeriYaki. Somehow, i'd like to read you on rom-com. Have you done one? I suspect there's a difference between a STEM trained view and an arts view. But probably not much.

Your response to your non-Korean movie/tv is by far my favorite!

I'm always intrigued by how DB staff still makes/has time for non-Korean tv.

I too am currently reading you TeriYaki! Lookout recaps! Thank you!
Glad to know a little bit more about you! Love your answers!
And like many other beanies here, I think the last non-Korean TV show I watched was either Friends or Seinfeld! Or was it Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, the original? Anyways, I have no idea what is currently airing, trending, and my trips to the movies are limited to whatever my 6 year-old niece wants to watch. I think my next movie outing will either be Frozen 2 or My Little Pony the Movie whichever one comes out first!
Looking forward to reading you soon! Tomorrow is Monday! Yeah!

Sorry I'm late, but I wanted to thank you for telling us a little about yourself and for your great recaps. It was fun going through the Tunnel with you!

That's awesome that you've been able to share your k-drama love with some of your family. And here's to living happily, quirkily ever after!

Nice to know you @teriyaki. Finally catch the Lookout train, thank you so much for recapping the show.

The mentioned of gas chromatography makes my head spinning on the flashes of images from my analytical chemistry classes. Glad I choose to not get a work on a lab after college.
