Name That Drama: Makjang galore and a chicken meet cute

- This sounds like the makjang-iest makjang that ever makjang’d
I honestly don’t remember if I have sent an email asking about this drama already, but here goes. It’s a period drama, and I believe it was Chinese. I only remember a few scenes, but this rich girl finds some secret information (I believe in a compact) that has to do with her best friend’s parents and ends up getting captured by some Chinese spy type group. The group recruits the girl with the promise of protecting her friend if she helps them bring down the people who are (I think) trying to give China over to Japan.
There is one scene where this Japanese soldier was supposed to marry the main girl’s friend but ends up getting betrayed and killed, and his identity is taken over by another guy and he goes to meet the girl. The main girl tricks her best friend and sets it up so the friend trips in the bathroom and sprains her ankle and therefore is unable to go to meet the guy, and the main girl goes in her place. I also remember the mother of the friend jumping through a window and
dying to warn the girl’s father that people were coming to arrest him, and I think the father dies as well. Then the main girl and her friend become enemies because she blames her for her parent’s deaths. - Name That Drama from a Variety Show
Hi,
So I was watching the variety show Knowing Bros (on JTBC), and on the episode with Kim Hee-sun (Episode 66), at one point they’re playing a game where someone does a wall confession (where a guy leans really close to a girl against a wall and stares her in the eyes), and they showed clips of it from dramas.
There’s one drama or movie that looks like it’s in a school (the clip is around 21:22) and I really want to watch that drama from just those five seconds alone! (There is some serious chemistry on display — the guy knows how to smolder!) The problem is, I don’t recognize either of the actors so I just tried googling variations of “Knowing Bros 66 drama clip” and “Kim Hee-sun wall confession school drama” with zero results. If anyone could watch the clip and let me know if they recognize the drama I would be very grateful!
Thank you!
- This sounds like it probably ends badly
Hi Beanies!
I watched this really beautiful Chinese/Taiwanese (probably?) movie a few years ago. I wanted to watch it again but forgot the title. The female lead is suffering from some kind of terminal disease and her mother is overprotective of her.
I remember a scene where the male lead is chasing a hen wearing a hen costume. The hen lands on the female lead’s lap, and she starts hiccuping. Another scene: The male lead is in a band and he performs with the band in front of the college for her. Aww.
Please help me remember this! Thank you!
- Name that Gif (This is a new one!)
So I saw this gif on Facebook and wanted to find out the movie or drama. It’s Chinese (perhaps).
The girl is dressed in traditional clothes and the guy is dressed in ancient elite guard clothes. He has her in a chokehold and she starts flailing. And suddenly, she picks her nose and flicks the snot on the guard.
I found the scene so interesting but could not find out which movie/ drama it was from. Please help me find out, fellow Beanies!
- Will fauxcest ever leave us all alone?
So, there was this thing I watched some time back (I don’t remember when), and I don’t remember whether it was a drama or a movie or whether it was Korean, Taiwanese or Japanese. It may have been Taiwanese.
Anyway, all I remember from the plot is that the main couple was about to get married, and they were standing in the church looking pretty and happy. And then during the “Does anyone have any objection” part, the girl’s father says he does, and everyone is just stunned as to why. The immediate family gathers in a side room and the father reveals that the main couple may be siblings!!!!! This puts a stop to their marriage, obviously, and they agree to not get married till further investigation.
I was watching Golden Pouch and the similar plot just made this scene pop into my mind and I just cannot remember where I have seen it!! Help me!!
Thanks for playing, everyone — till next time!

#2 is a Japanese movie "L.DK," not "Heroine Disqualified." I understand the confusion since both films feature the same male lead - Kento Yamazaki, or as I like to call him, Song Joong-Ki's Japanese doppelganger.

I never noticed the resemblance before! Kento Yamazaki has been in a lot of live action versions of manga, especially shoujo manga, so I call him "shoujo manga lead". lol
For beanies here unfamiliar with Japanese dramas/movies: if you like youth rom-coms, check out both Heroine Disqualified and L-DK, as well as Wolf Girl and Black Prince. All of these movies star Kento Yamazaki and are set in high school. Similiarly, I'd recommend the drama A Girl & Three Sweethearts, which has the same leads as Heroine Disqualified.

me too - i tried a few japanese, chinese and taiwanese dramas.. but they just couldn't hook me in like kdrama does!
they aren't as crisply delivered as kdrama - or maybe kdrama has perfected how to sway audience emotions!
How about other beanies? Or have I just missed out on really great other lang dramas and saw the boring ones. the ones I saw: J-drama - Gokusen; C-drama: LoveO2O; T-drama - Extravagant Challenge (or skip beat - i louuvvee the manga!)

I'd say Korean dramas are still my favorite, but there are definitely some gems in Jdramas and Tdramas (haven't tried enough Cdramas to comment).
Personally, the ones you mentioned bored me to tears when I tried them. I have several I enjoyed, but I haven't watched J or T dramas in a while so these are all old ones.
For Jdramas, Hana yori dango is still the gold standard for Boys Over Flowers adaptations, and I really enjoyed Kurosagi, Hanazakari no Kimitachi e, Nodame Cantabile, Galileo, Great Teacher Onizuka, and Liar Game. I also heard great things about Nobuta wa Produce.
For Tdramas, Meteor Garden is the classic but personally I couldn't stand it. It started with a Kiss is my all time favorite (they made another taiwanese remake of this recently called Miss in Kiss -haven't tried it yet but it's on my list). I also enjoyed Autumn Concerto, Bromance, Marry Me or Not, Devil Beside You (ridiculous plot but strangely addictive), Prince Turns to Frog (ditto), Fated To Love You, Down With Love, In Time With You, and The Pursuit of Happiness.

Ahh - all the jdramas u mentioned, I have read in the manga format & probably why I have that prejudice which all book lovers also tend to have - that "the movie wasnt as good as the books". Might explain the Gokusen dislike too.
I hated Meteor garden too ! haha. Will check out Kiss & some Tdrama u mentioned.
I have tried a couple of others too, but gave up midway 1-2episodes. There is something about the dressing/cinematography which just doesnt feel as sharp and crisp as kdrama. Maybe they meander too much or dont have enough budget for better photographers? i dunno..

If you are including Nodame as a manga you've read and therefore don't need to watch, I recommend checking out the drama anyway. If only for the music which you can't hear as well in the manga.
I love It Started with a Kiss too, but mainly because it leads into the second season. They Kiss Again is my all time favorite twdrama. It hits all my kinks.

I find down with you and devil beside you highly over rated. Never been able to finish down with you despire aron yang.. the lead girl is soooo annoying.. (not so proper cuteness and random fighting)
Miss in Kiss: i though even a horrible remake could never sway my love for itazura na kiss.. i was so wrong.. and the problem in this series is the main guy.. HE IS HORRIBLE...
naoki is supposed to be the pivot.. because after ariel lin, i can tolerate anyone playing kotoko (dumbness and ariel's natural shrieking acting are difficult to beat) ..
if naoki fails to deliver then this series falls flat. Naoki either has to be drop dead gorgeous.. or a really really really good actor.. or Yuki Furukawa..
but this guy is neither gorgeous and worst actor of all adaptations

My first full Taiwan series was Absolute Bf, then followed Jiro to Fabulous Boys (decent remake of YaB) & then Hana Kimi (ahaha, so bad, soo good, sooo cheesy, & I watched it verry slowly to make it last more than a few mths- still wish it had a sequel!!) xD Now alternating Down with Love & Be With Me, both got their ups & downs, but overall worth watching, quite enjoyable so far.

It depends, what do you like? Japan is great at more slice of life doramas and dark stuff.
Sakamoto Yuji's( screenwriter) doramas are usually excellent; Mother, Mondai no aru restaurant, saikou no riko, soredemo ikite yuku.
Shinya shokudo, the Korean remake is bad. The Japanese one (2 seasons is great)
Border with Oguri Shun also Ouroboros.
The Japanese adaptation of Cold Case.
Saigo Kara Nibanme no Koi, the Japanese adapation is much better then the Kdrama remake.

I have a 1 question too.
I was browsing Youtube and came across few shows FMVs.
Story is typical - Heroine looks older than the hero. Hero is cold, in a gang, kind of bully too. Hero's mother orders Heroine to marry him and heroine accepts it. In comments someone said it was a novel and there was no drama based on it. In some comments it was mentioned Hero was in high school and heroine was a teacher[Its not BIG]. There is dialgoue in MV where heroine says she will not fall in love with the hero - And we know where it all leads too. There are no hugs/ kiss scenes or any kind of physical proximity. Heroine cries several times and lead the march to a melodrama. The Guy also asks for divorce.
In 2nd MV of the same there is also a car accident.
Guess this puzzle.

Or when we make an idiot of ourselves? "I can never show my face again. I totally makjang-ed that!"

I went and watched the Knowing Bros clip, and now I want to know the drama, too! But I haven't a clue as to who the actors are. I'm guessing it's a JTBC show, right? Since they'd probably show clips from their own network. It's got kind of a retro feel, from their haircuts (his shaggy hair and her bangs) and the lighting used (not as bright). Her character must be some kind of "tough girl," since she has her foot up on the railing. But that move is super sexy, with him grabbing her ankle while leaning on the wall.

Number 1 is a Chinese drama called "Rookie Agent Rouge" starring actress Zhao Liying as the heroine who is a student activist in China under Japanese Imperial rule, who gets mistaken for a spy but takes on the role to protect her friend whose parents are Japan-sympathizers. I read the beginning of the drama in recaps and most of the description fits the plot.
