Goblin writer Kim Eun-sook returns with period drama Mr. Sunshine

Pre-production work has begun for the next drama from hit writer Kim Eun-sook, of The Lonely Shining Goblin and Descended From the Sun fame (also Heirs, Secret Garden, and Lovers in Paris, among others). She’s announced that the synopsis is complete and script work has begun for her new drama, a period piece set at the turn of the twentieth century titled Mr. Sunshine.

The drama is set in 1900 to 1905, and tells the story of a soldier in the righteous army falling in love with an aristocrat’s daughter. It begins in 1871 when the hero boards an American military ship as a little boy during the Shinmiyangyo, a U.S. military expedition to Korea that resulted in a battle. He lands in the U.S. and then years later returns to Korea as an American soldier, to the country that abandoned him. While stationed in Korea, he’ll meet and fall in love with a nobleman’s daughter.

The term “righteous army” refers to Korea’s long history of commoners taking up arms to protect their country against foreign invaders, dating back to Goryeo. The righteous army made a comeback in 1895 to 1905 as Japan imposed more and more control over Korea, and eventually became the backbone of the independence movement’s guerilla militia during the Japanese occupation.

Kim Eun-sook explained, “It was a subject I’ve been wanting to write about for a long time… It’s not the story of independence fighters, but righteous armies. They aren’t recorded in history, but they’re stories we ought to know.” About covering a less common time period (most dramas and films set in that era tend to take place in 1910 to 1945, and make use of the set featured in Gaksital), Kim said, “There are sets of the Japanese occupation period, but there are no locations that exist for early 1900. We have to build the sets, and in order to do that, I have to hurry up and write the script. The synopsis is out and I’ve begun scriptwriting.”

Kim will be reuniting with PD Lee Eung-bok, with whom she made her last two massive hits, Goblin and Descended From the Sun. There’s no news yet of casting offers, but Kim Eun-sook said, “I have an actor in mind [for the leading character]. Because the character requires strong narration and wide breadth of emotion, I want an extremely good actor.” Well, I don’t know that anyone would say they want a mediocre actor, but at least Kim Eun-sook has enough clout to actually secure A-list talent.

It sounds like familiar territory for the writer after Descended’s heavy focus on the military, but the time period will likely become the focal point of this new drama, which is an era I look forward to seeing portrayed. These days Chicago Typewriter’s paltry glimpses at 1930s Kyungsung is making me hungry for a full-length drama from that era; maybe Mr. Sunshine will scratch that itch and tell an inspiring story of the generation that came before.

Mr. Sunshine is planning to air in spring or summer of 2018.

There are many dramas and famous scriptwriter in Korea. As well as many hits per year? How is that pathetic?
KES is just one person, she can only write about 1 drama per year at most, Korean dramaland is populated by more than just her dramas.
What makes her special is that she's a consistent hitmaker. And it's no surprise that they're not that many of them. Making hits is not that easy. It would be more surprising if there were many Kim Eun Sook in the world.

there was a top 10 favorite scriptwriters post on dramabeans:
http://www.dramabeans.com/2017/02/top-10-favorite-drama-writers/

There are a lot of good, popular scriptwriters out there, and like Wun Vo says below, KES stands out by being a consistent hitmaker. She is also consistent with the genre she chooses - the romantic comedy. She has honed her skills and quirks in that one genre, so when she unleashes another rom-com, you know already what you're getting into. And the rom-com is like the biggest genre in kdramas.

She'll probably cast a big star, no reason for her not too, it'll elevate the status of the drama. But I can't help but hope she can cast an unknown talent. She, out of all people, can afford it. And we get to discover and welcome a new lead man in drama land.

I actually enjoyed DOTS and Goblin as well as Secret Garden but couldn't bring myself to enjoy Heirs and A Gentleman's Dignity (I actually had to force myself to finish both of them and felt like they were a waste of time. Don't get mad at me!) I agree she focuses too much on the pretty and less on the story but I might give this one a chance again as long as it's 16 episodes and not 20.

After all the 1930s beauty we've been bestowed upon on Chicago Typewriter, I am definitely on board with this drama. I'm thinking this will be a little like Downton Abbey but K-dramafied (lol) so I can't wait to see who gets cast for this!

I'm probably biased and well, I honestly don't have enough K-drama cred to recommend anybody else other than the leads I've watched recently but throwing out there anyway... Lee Je Hoon, anyone? I feel he has that certain toughness that you expect from a military character but he also has that charming playfulness about him.

I don't want to feel empty at the end of it.. the premise is too interesting to be ruined like last two dramas..

hmm on her actor selection-

can't think of anyone but gong yoo.. who else does she love.. kim wo bin.. but he doesn't have that skills of an actor as she seeks.. Hyun bin yes.. and unfortunately kim wo bin is out of action..

lastly there is park bo gum... yup that can work

I'm very wary about this, I don't like KES's works very much - I find it very hard to connect with it. Somehow she gets really great premises but when it comes to execution...I don't know. Admittedly I've only watched a few of her work: Lovers in Paris, Secret Garden and Goblin - but I've read reviews on her other dramas which led me to not watch them. I liked Paris 'cos the romance execution was new and fresh (at that time); Secret Garden (which remains my fave of hers) only 'cos of how Hyun Bin elevated the character; while Goblin I didn't like even though I love Gong Yoo a lot which made the disappointment so much heavier.

For me she doesn't do character developments very well - like all fluff, no substance. Sometimes I think maybe that "quick banter" dialogue she's famous for only works in Korean and gets lost in translation - I haven't really seen it. So I'm not sure about this...

"tells the story of a soldier in the righteous army falling in love with an aristocrat’s daughter"

And I'm eyerolling out of existence... I mean I know Kim Eun Sook isn't here to invent everything new and I really like the period she is setting this story in but I know what we're going to see when she is writing a love story. So I guess - if the cast isn't super interesting - I'll give this a pass.

yup..aristocrats's daughter.. someone in vicinity being a japanese spy.. better if the heroine herself is the spy (but her heroines are righteous so guess not)..

and then goblin kind of ending.. hero dies in the fight.. or we get a 40 yr fast forward.. when they are grandpa and granma.. tellign stories to their grandchildren..

its going to be predictable..even the love story like so many other movies from different regions..

But the setting , costumes will make up for more than the typical romcom

I don't care what kind of plot she will write or who will be the male leads, I mean we all know her style, no use to expect something different from her. At least so far she wrote a believeable romance stories, and that's her specialty.

I just wish Kim So Eun will get the opportunity to act in her drama. If first lead is too much to ask, second lead is good enough for me. She is also stand out in historical drama, so this sound perfect for her. Her career also has to take off to somewhere and by doing a hit writer's drama, can somewhat boost her popularity.

Frankly speaking, she wasted around 8 months (60 epi) for this drama. A role was not even challenging for her,the drama title was also not respresenting the whole drama and the writer /PD only make her and Song Jae Rim to do fanservice -kissess etc. I can writer long essay for this stupid drama, but my advice don't watch. 'Gap Dol' probably a new and challenging role for Song Jae Rim since he always played a cold character, but not for Soeun. A drama that I want to forget, for good.

What a shame, I really liked her in Horse Doctor.

Second lead, let's hope KES gives her a second lead. While her female leads tend to be eclipsed by the male lead, her second leads get interesting roles (Kim Ji Won, Yoo In Na - both of them were twice second leads in KES dramas now that I think of it!).

Praying hard for it to happen?? Second lead in Kim Eun Sook's is a big deal compared to most writers. I think Kim Ji Won and Yoo Inna characters are quite sassy abnd bold, so yes. It is a shame, she already showed her talent from her earlier days but something must be went wrong imo. - her previous agency didn't do enough promotions for her, thus she only restricted to certain role. She finally tried to do different kind of role in Scholar Who Walks The Night. Hopefully better luck for her in the future

Our Gap Soon sucked so bad. Who in their right mind choose Gap Dol anyway. Too many kiss scenes of them in the drama could be the fan service to their shippers. I havent watched their WGM though.

This drama sucks in everything. Their kissing scenes - honestly quite disgusting to watch? Seems like the writer pushed for the viewers to believe they are in love. Funniest part, they kissed a lot before marriage, but after marriage nothing romantic happened ?

You are right, the PD seems the only one who wanted to push their romance etc, probably he is their shipper. They have more chemistry in real life compared to the drama. I enjoyed their interactions in WGM and used to ship them until Our Gabsoon ruined it.

I've been watching a ton of sageuks lately, and each time I do I end up googling the time period and learning more about Korean history. Chicago Typewriter has me learning about the Japanese occupation, and now this new drama I'm sure will have me diving into that particular time period. As someone who grew up in the West with an extremely Eurocentric education of 'World History', it's an unexpected bonus to find myself learning so much about the rest of the world, all the while swooning over the witty banter and (b)romance. Looking forward to Mr. Sunshine - even when Kim Eun Sook's writing is infuriating, it still manages to be compelling.
