Chicago Typewriter: Episode 6

Who knew that spooks and haunts could be so funny? Revelations come tumbling out this hour as Se-joo faces the world that doesn’t see his own reality. It seems the only way to make sense of what’s going on in the present is by learning more about the past, where only Yoo can make the world seem all right and can make the darkness seem bright.

EPISODE 6 RECAP

Jin-oh reveals that he is in fact, a ghost that has resided in the antique typewriter for over eighty years. Now the pieces fall in place in Se-joo’s head—every word from Jin-oh’s mouth and every interaction with him pointed to this very fact. Shocked, Se-joo collapses.

Se-joo is roused awake by the sound of Jin-oh’s voice, and he screams when he opens his eyes to see Jin-oh’s face. Any attempt to run away is foiled by Jin-oh, who can easily walk through walls, hoping to have a civil conversation with him. Se-joo screams endlessly instead.

When Se-joo eventually calms down enough to talk to Jin-oh, he admits he doesn’t know what caused Se-joo to start seeing his physical manifestation. He thought their first encounter was a fluke, but then after their second encounter, he realized that Se-joo can definitely see him.

He feels awkward when Se-joo speaks to him in a mix of jondae and banmal, and assuaging his fears that seeing him is a bad omen. He doesn’t quite know what it means for Se-joo to see him (oh?) and confirms that Se-joo is the only one who can see him. He involuntarily defends himself when Se-joo moves his pillow, then remembers that there’s one other person who can see him.

Cut to: Bang-jin, dictating her latest story to her typist, Seol, who sighs at the illogical tale of lovers being reincarnated as horses. She prays to the heavens to help her become a great writer, and her mother immediately scolds her for having such useless aspirations like becoming a drama screenwriter.

Bang-jin’s mother raises a broom against her when Bang-jin greets a visitor by the gate. It’s a teenage ghost whom only Bang-jin can see, and she leaves their guest and her mother alone to chat.

Back at the house, Jin-oh thinks they should find out why Se-joo is able to see him, though the latter thinks he has a better chance of moving on into the afterlife. He asks for Se-joo’s help on becoming visible, which prompts Se-joo to ask if Jin-oh plans on using bodily possession.

Jin-oh laughs, saying that he can only possess animals for now (which would explain the stray dog). Still afraid, Se-joo asks what Jin-oh plans on doing with a body—become a celebrity? Jin-oh sheepishly replies, “I want to tell Jeon Seol how I feel about her. I told you that I fell in love at first sight.” Awww.

Seol highlights a passage from a book entitled “Perhaps, The Words I Wish To Hear Most” by Jung Hee-jae. As she rewatches Se-joo’s press conference, she narrates, “I now know, you must endure things you cannot endure, be worn out by the things you cannot accept, that there are nights when your eyes are brimming with tears. And daresay I know… what you’ve dreamt of, and what you’ve lost. ”

She immediately heads over to Riccardo where Dae-han fixes her up a fancy packed meal he calls “O Sole Mio” (Oh, My Sun!). He pouts hearing that this food is for another man, namely the one who “bowed his head to the nation for my sake” aka Se-joo.

Jin-oh worries about all the suitors in Seol’s life, though his first step is making himself known to her. Se-joo asks if he’s tried before, and Jin-oh says he hasn’t mustered up the courage and he fears that he’ll be driven to despair if he doesn’t succeed.

He wonders if Se-joo likes Seol too, and Se-joo snaps back, “Are you nuts? There are just two things I don’t need in my life. A ghostwriter and a woman.” Jin-oh has made the list tonight, and he’s told to leave before Se-joo calls an exorcist. Aww, Jin-oh looks like he’s about to cry.

Just then the doorbell rings. Jin-oh: “Is that the exorcist?” No, it’s Seol, and he cheerily encourages Se-joo to let her in. Before Se-joo can get two words in, the gate opens and Jin-oh hides behind a wall. LOL.

Realizing that it was Jin-oh who’d been opening doors for Seol, Se-joo screeeeams at him for doing just that… just as Seol arrives at the front door. Suddenly, Jin-oh is gone and Se-joo looks around, only to find him waving his hand in front of Seol’s face. “What are you doing?!” Se-joo hollers.

Taken aback, Seol asks why he’s so angry. Jin-oh guesses that Seol can’t see him and walks away, defeated. Awww. Se-joo asks why she’s here so late at a man’s house, but Seol doesn’t see him as a man, and he’s offended when she says he transcends gender in her eyes.

Jin-oh zooms back when Seol offers up the packed meal, and Se-joo growls at him to “get lost.” She hears the tail end of that sentence, though, and Se-joo invites her inside.

Jin-oh sits next to Seol while Se-joo is touched by the scrumptious-looking food, asking if she’s here to comfort him. She’s here to thank him as well because the threatening calls and emails have stopped thanks to his announcement. Se-joo can barely hide his smile and plays it cool.

She apologizes for being unaware that Se-joo held an important press conference after spending the afternoon with her that day. She thanks him for calling her by name and finally recognizing her as his first fan, and he tells her to stop with the accolades.

Saying she has something to share with him, Seol takes out her book. Jin-oh looks at his angel with heart eyes, and Se-joo responds, irritated: “Won’t you shut up?” Seol gapes at him. Lololol.

Hurt, she softly tells him to read the passage on his own. She’s worried when he says he’s pretty tired, and when Jin-oh asks if he’s sending Seol away, he flips his lid: “What does it matter to you?! Get lost! Why are you being impertinent and butting in?!” Oh, this is never gonna get old.

Seol rises from her seat, apologizes profusely, and turns to leave. Se-joo and Jin-oh reach out simultaneously… and Jin-oh accidentally rips her bag. She storms out and Se-joo catches up to her, twirling her around to get her attention.

He pauses upon seeing her tear-stained face, however, and Seol says that she understood that things haven’t been easy for him lately and even made excuses for his behavior. But she’s human too, and there’s only so much she can take. Believing that she liked his writing talents, not him as a person, Seol apologizes again and leaves.

Se-joo storms back inside and yells at Jin-oh to show himself. But Jin-oh is nowhere to be found, and Se-joo gets an idea when he spots the typewriter. The eyes of the Eugene O’Neill portrait follow him.

Se-joo grabs the typewriter and threatens to smash it… then nearly crumbles from its weight. HA. So he sets it down on his desk, then looks at the Eugene O’Neill portrait, whose eyes move whenever Se-joo isn’t looking.

Se-joo decides to catch the eyes in the act and whips around to looks at it, but now it wears a dark expression. Se-joo passes out in shock.

He wakes up with a jolt the next morning, relieved to find his room ghost-free. But then he’s greeted by his house staff, who vows to stay with him no matter what. Aw. Ji-seok comes bursting in the next moment, praising him for pulling off such a fantastic performance that won sympathy points with the internet.

Ji-seok thinks they’re ready for the future, only to choke on his coffee when Se-joo asks him to discontinue the serial novel. Se-joo says he meant every word in his press statement and plans to give up writing. He refuses to continue writing a series he never wrote, which prompts Ji-seok to ask who was writing Chicago Typewriter then.

Se-joo motions Ji-seok toward him and whispers, “A ghostwriter. But that ghostwriter… is an actual ghost.” Ji-seok nods, then zips out of the room to call Se-joo’s psychiatrist.

Meanwhile, Se-joo glares at the Eugene O’Neill portrait and orders Jin-oh to come out. Then he removes the portrait from the wall and starts shaking it. Seeing this, Ji-seok cries.

Se-joo goes to see his psychiatrist and figures proper rest will resolve his burnout syndrome symptoms. His shrink asks if he’s still suffering from fear of abandonment, explaining that those who do typically tend to cut off ties with people before they get too close. He wonders if Se-joo’s claims of a ghostwriter are tied to that, and asks if Se-joo still suffers from nightmares.

Fifteen years ago. On a rainy day, Writer Baek sought out young Se-joo living alone in a rooftop apartment. Calling himself his late father’s friend, he invited Se-joo to come live with him.

Tae-min was friendly when Se-joo moved in, and Tae-min’s mother laid out some ground rules: He must be a ghost-like presence that must never make himself known because he was an embarrassment to this household.

Se-joo is still bothered by that memory and looks up to see Jin-oh as his shrink asks if he still sees ghosts. Hold up—still? Staring at Jin-oh, he lies, “No, I don’t see them.”

Jin-oh reappears next to Se-joo in his car, though the latter tries to convince himself that he’s dreaming. “Can’t we keep writing the novel together?” Jin-oh ventures. “I’m a ghost and nobody knows who I am—”

Se-joo pulls to the side of the road and screams in frustration. He thought that it’d be easier coming clean, but no one believes in Jin-oh’s existence. He can’t even atone for his wrongs, though Jin-oh believes that Se-joo has done nothing wrong because “I didn’t write that novel… because you wrote it yourself, eighty years ago.”

Jin-oh says he and Se-joo were friends in their past lives and were both writers, which Se-joo finds hard to believe. He says that novel was never finished, but that novel was the story of their lives and he desperately wants to see its ending. Se-joo screams at him to get out, and finds Jin-oh gone.

Se-joo returns home to find his secretary hanging up the Eugene O’Neill portrait, which is now sporting sunglasses. He demands to be left alone, promising her that he won’t do anything dangerous, and sees the book Seol left behind.

Seol is picked to buy lunch for the entire staff when Tae-min runs in with his injured cat. His look of concern drops once Kitty Seol is rushed inside. He thanks the vets upon hearing that the surgery was successful and treats everyone to lunch.

He asks if Seol is free after work and brings her to his workspace since they’ll be working together. When Seol is confused by the news, he realizes that she was too tipsy to remember that night, and Seol asks if she agreed to be his assistant because she was sure she passed on that opportunity.

He fixes her a drink and confirms that she did reject his offer that night. So he brought her out here to ask her again, and Seol replies that she’s working at the animal clinic. Tae-min knows that it’s only on a part-time basis, and reminds her that he needed a reference, not a ghostwriter. Moreover, she’s a bookworm.

She mulls over the offer before accepting the offer. They shake on it, and she gasps when he presents her with a signed copy of Fate with a personalized message.

At home, Se-joo reads another highlighted portion from Seol’s book: “I place my hand on your forehead. You, have lived diligently. Please place a hand on my forehead too. The moment one person leaves their fingerprints on another forehead and comforts him, all the frivolous things fall by the wayside, and the silence we never took advantage of while we were engulfed with desire will embrace us.”

We see Se-joo take a walk and stop in front of storefront window as we hear the rest: “You’ve, worked hard, to live, to survive, you’ve worked hard to get this far. I pray that the happiest moments of your life are yet to come.”

He calls his secretary to order the bag from him before deciding to do it himself. He then heads to the animal clinic hoping to meet Seol, and sees her return with Tae-min. He hides and overhears her worries about being Tae-min’s assistant.

But then Seol’s face brightens to see the stray dog in front of the clinic. Hee, is this Jin-oh? Seol feeds the dog inside, and when Tae-min says this one seems to like her, she remarks that she’s always been more popular with animals than humans.

This dog is responsible for getting her in touch with Se-joo, much like the animals did in the tale of Gyeon-woo and Jik-nyeo (commonly known as Chilseok). She decides to name the dog Gyeon-woo, though finds it a shame that he’s a Sapsaree, a breed believed to ward off ghosts and evil spirits.

Hearing that Gyeon-woo doesn’t have a home, Tae-min offers to take care of him. Say no, Seol! But she doesn’t know that he’s a pet abuser who belongs in the seventh circle of hell and entrusts him with the dog.

Se-joo confronts Tae-min outside, sneering that he must be too busy hanging out with Seol and taking abandoned animals to write. Tae-min explains that his cat is a patient here, and refers to Gyeon-woo as a present given to him by Seol.

Both men can tell that Seol is someone quite special to the other, and hearing that Tae-min has read up on his scandal with Seol, Se-joo wonders why he’s so interested in him. He amends that statement, “You’re probably interested in what’s mine.”

Se-joo knows that Tae-min would even go so far as to steal if he wanted to. He puts an end to this conversation, but Tae-min isn’t finished: “Haven’t you ever thought that it was also your fault for letting me steal [it] from you?”

“Because losing something… means you failed to protect [it]. You have no right to something you couldn’t protect. It’s no different than being abandoned.” Tae-min grits out. That’s why Se-joo has decided to never let anyone steal what’s his from now on. Tae-min asks, “Like what?” Se-joo: “Whatever it may be.”

Tae-min asks if that includes Seol and can see that topic shakes Se-joo’s resolve. As payback, Se-joo takes Gyeon-woo with him.

Se-joo is mulling over Tae-min’s words on the walk home when he stops in his tracks at the sound of Jin-oh’s voice. And then Gyeon-woo/Jin-oh shakes his coat to get his attention.

Reminding him that he can possess animals, Se-joo realizes that it was Jin-oh was the one who entered his home, swallowed the USB drive, and jumped into Seol’s arms. Pffft, then we see Jin-oh’s ghost form asking why Se-joo left out the part of him where he saved Seol when she was accused of being a stalker.

Se-joo tells him to come out so they can talk, but Gyeon-woo/Jin-oh says it’ll probably look even weirder for him to be talking to a dog in the street. Se-joo grabs him by the jaw, threatening to punch him and raises a fist when a voice calls out behind him.

It’s Seol, who promptly takes the leash from him. She asks if he wants to be reported to the authorities while Se-joo defensively says that what she sees isn’t everything. She asks why he “interfered,” which he takes to mean getting in the way between her and Tae-min.

She claims Se-joo will simply neglect this dog and eventually abandon it, because he doesn’t love anything other than himself. Hurt, Se-joo counters, “Says who? Who says I’m like that?”

She says everything about him screams that, from his actions to his words and his fickle nature. When Gyeon-woo/Jin-oh pipes up, Se-joo orders him to be quiet, but that’s the last straw for Seol, who decides that she cannot be his fan anymore.

She leads Gyeon-woo/Jin-oh away, though the latter keeps looking back at Se-joo. Jin-oh tries apologizing in person when Se-joo returns home, but Se-joo has none of it. He announces that he’ll be selling this mansion and sending the typewriter back to Chicago.

He turns around only to find himself face to face with Jin-oh again. When asked if he plans on letting Tae-min steal everything in his life from his writing to his relationship with Seol, he orders Jin-oh not to meddle in his life.

“Don’t you want to know why I sent myself to you?” Jin-oh asks. Se-joo isn’t the least bit curious, though he surmises that Jin-oh probably wanted to publish a novel under another writer’s name. Jin-oh cries, “I wanted to write a novel with you!”

He’s unable to write that novel himself—furthermore, the original work belongs to Se-joo, and most importantly: “And I… don’t recall the final moments of my past life.” OH.

Se-joo scoffs at that, then asks if he was supposed to feel sad for him. When Jin-oh doesn’t leave, Se-joo marches into his office, grabs the typewriter, and raises it above his head… when he hears the voice of Jin-oh’s past self asking, “Is this the Korean typewriter that just came out?”

We flash back to the 1930s where Jin-oh and Hwi-young admire the typewriter in a display window. Hwi-young sighs that only the rich can afford such a luxury at present, and Jin-oh says while they can’t afford two… he can probably get one for his buddy.

Taking out his pen, Hwi-young says he’s satisfied with this writing tool when it comes to changing the world. He eventually does end up with the typewriter of course, which Jin-oh boasts as custom-made. Jin-oh tells Soo-hyun that this next project is something that Hwi-young has been wanting to write.

Soo-hyun sends him a hopeful look, but already knowing what she wants, Jin-oh refuses. “Traitor,” she mutters before sneaking up to Hwi-young and stealing his freshly typed pages from him.

Jin-oh gets called a traitor again when he stops Hwi-young from going after her, laughing that this is the power of love. Meanwhile, Soo-hyun reads the pages intently.

The club is abuzz that night while Hwi-young paces back and forth waiting for his pages to be returned to him, along with Soo-hyun’s criticism. Suddenly, Soo-hyun rings the bell to the get the crowd’s attention and gets up on stage. Both Hwi-young and Jin-oh grow nervous when she speaks on how they’re in the midst of a dark era in Joseon.

“But I saw a dim ray of light in the darkness that surrounds us,” Soo-hyun announces. “I’ve witnessed the birth of a phenomenal writer that will be like a torch that drives away the darkness. I’d like to share the joy of that discovery with you all.” She then raises her glass in the air: “Here’s to the bright star of tomorrow, writer Seo Hwi-young!”

The crowd gives him a round of applause, and Soo-hyun declares that drinks will be on the house tonight. She threatens to open a bottle of champagne in front of the boys, who scurry away from her. She sprays the champagne at them as we fade back to the present.

“Will you believe what I have to say now?” Jin-oh asks. He pleads with Se-joo to finish that novel because it’s the only way for him to figure out how he died and why he was trapped inside that typewriter.

Se-joo has a question of his own: “In your past life… was Jeon Seol a part of it?” Jin-oh nods and replies, “Her name was Ryu Soo-hyun. She was our comrade… and lover.”

COMMENTS

Argh! How are we supposed to make logical leaps in character relationships when Korean is a language where pronouns aren’t essential to make a sentence grammatically correct? Because as it stands now, that last line reads as if Soo-hyun could’ve been romantically involved with both of them. Not to say I would’ve blamed her one bit, but I’m thinking that the absence of an additional pronoun is a deliberate choice to keep us in the dark.

I wish I could assume that the romantic ties in the past are similar to the setup in the present (wherein Jin-oh loves Seol who admired Se-joo who likes her but doesn’t know it yet), but there’s always the possibility that Jin-oh and Soo-hyun did become an item in the 1930s. We know that Soo-hyun had a deep admiration for Hwi-young’s writing talent, and that the trio shared a deep bond, but we have no idea which of these friendships turned into romance, if ever. And as much as I love this band of independent fighters and that Past Jin-oh operates Carpe Diem, I do have so many questions when it comes to our ghost writer.

He’s definitely the spirit of the typewriter whose fate is inexplicably tied to the machine. Even if we don’t have all the details surrounding his death yet, Jin-oh’s connection to it makes sense if only because he was the one who bought it for Hwi-young. I’m sure it’s no coincidence that his friends jokingly called him a “traitor” to his face in their past lives, especially when Seol is the one who believes she betrayed the country and Se-joo is currently believed to have saved it. But what if everything we’ve been told about them is a red herring or that these teasing insertions about Jin-oh are also a distraction method? Furthermore, Jin-oh can’t remember the circumstances of his death and why Se-joo is able to see him, but he knows that Hwi-young’s writing needs to be seen to completion. Does he believe that completing this novel will actually set him free?

Still, I can’t imagine Jin-oh being an evil character when his ghostly behavior serves to benefit Se-joo’s career. I’m actually impressed that he recalls so much of Hwi-young’s work eighty years after the fact, and thought it was sweet that he earnestly wants to be visible to Seol so he can tell her how he feels. It worries him that Seol has so many people in love with her, though I can’t really tell if it bothers Jin-oh if Se-joo is starting to harbor feelings for her too.

In any case, it’s been a great pair of episodes this week, one that has made me laugh and cry and yearn for more. That’s a great position to be in when we have so much ground to cover. Have a treat, Chicago Typewriter.

Who knew that visual was what we needed, LOL!?! I laughed so hard at times in this episode my face hurt, but then at the end there was such a sweetly poignant tone to the flashback scenes that I really found myself pulled into the emotion between the friends. Can't wait for more!!

So many of these comedy gold scenes are things I never knew I wanted! Show is nailing the originality and humor, as well as the 30s plot line. Can we just stay in the 30s for the whole time?!

Was I the only one who spotted the inconsistency where the first time they showed Yoo in human form squatting there, he had no leash around his neck? Hahaha. Reminds me of the scene where Ra-on dropped her shoe when they were about to ride off in MDBC.

Is Jin-oh playing cupid? I don't understand the way he smiled in that scene where Seol brought that lunch box to Se-ju.

Also, LOL at all the interactions between Se-ju and Jin-oh! I am finding them really funny together ?

He does seem like it, doesn't he? I think it's a blend of Jin Oh genuinely being happy at every single thing Seol does (no matter who it's expressed towards) and possibly the realization that after 80 years as a spirit, there's not really going to be any resolution to him having a crush on a human.

Jin Oh's already drawn a line between spirit and human with Se Joo during their banmal negotiation; it's possible that he is viewing his own love as very contained, express-able but not able to be reciprocated. In which case the second-best option might be to set Seol up with Se Joo.

...this does of course hinge on whatever the hell happened in the past. But Oh Jin's past self seems to be the same sort of expansive, easygoing guy that his spirit self is, so maybe if there is a change in him it occurred right around the same time as he died. And maybe when placed under similar stress, he'll act out in the same way. In other words: he might be okay with Seol and Se Joo right up until the point he absolutely isn't.

I am SO glad Go Kyung Pyo is getting the chance to be more than the knowing, mysterious ghost - it really brings a new twist to the show to have him there, invisible, not-really interacting but exploding with facial expressions and gestures. Especially now that he's not being serious all the time, and is torn between being love-lorn and exasperated and abashed. Hee, Eugene O has shades now, I hope that wasn't an expensive portrait?

I love that we see how these three people were so intertwined in the past, and how they clearly loved each other and made up their own little clan. It's like we're watching this whole thing in reverse - the past storyline we're coming in when their friendship is surely going to rupture and dissolve somehow, and in the currents storyline we're going to see how they naturally gravitate to each other and hopefully form the same group. There's something very satisfying about seeing something that gets broken also get mended, even if there's an 80-year gap.

I was freaking out when Tae Min offered to bring the dog home. He does not get custody of animals anymore, no, even when that animal is Jin Oh and could probably launch something at his head if he tried something. Still no.

Lol, later in the episode when they were having a serious confrontation...Eugene with his new shades found his way into the background shot and I couldn't stop laughing. I don't know how I'm going to carry on at this rate.

Ugh, Tae Min. Honestly, part of me is hoping Jin Oh just stays as the dog because I trust him to be better at protecting himself. I just want that evil animal abuser finished off now.

"Cut to: Bang-jin, dictating her latest story to her typist, Seol, who sighs at the illogical tale of lovers being reincarnated as horses"

I laugh so much at this part. It's still logical if it was two horses but the lovers are reincarnated as a horse and its muscle.. hahaha I was like wth!

I'm loving the story so far. Thou, the other guy (TaeMin? I think?), creep the heck out of me. The thought he with the dog just irk me.

I'm confused who would be the comrade and who would be the lover but for now I think lover is Se-ju and Jin-oh is the comrade.

It's sad that Jin-oh doesn't know why he died and why he could reincarnate and it's locked in that typewriter, so it makes sense that he insists that Se-Jo keeps writing, and the revelation that this particular novel was actually written by Se Jo in the 30's it's a relief for me and should be for him (if he chills a just a little and trusts Jin-oh) because that means he's not betraying his morals to publish this novel.

That scene when Seol gives the dog to Tae-min made me so worried for the dog i actually cheered when Se-joo took Gyeon-woo from his hands, and relieved again when Seol took Gyeon-woo from Se-Joo's. Please let the doggie with a stable person show!

Thanks for the recaps :)

I was so worried when TM took the dog. He couldn't even care for a little kitten, and now a freaking big dog? I fear he might pull punches at or beat the dog since he can't very well fling it in the air when he is upset.

The misunderstandings between Seol and Seju are paining me so much at the moment. I'm very much looking forward to a potential future scene where Jinoh takes Seju to Bangjin (since she's the only other person who can see him) to try and get some answers

So many LOL moments in this episode:
1. Se-ju's screams, after he fainted when Jin-oh revealed himself
2. When Bang-jin made the 'advanced metaphor' of her reincarnated lovers as a horse and its muscles
3. When Se-ju asked if Jin-oh wants to be visible because he wants to debut as a celebrity
4. Dae-han's pitiful 'Fire!' after Seol left to meet Se-ju
5. When Jin-oh hides behind a wall after opening the door for Seol
6. When Seol claimed that she doesn't see Se-ju as a man
7. Seju's 'Won't you shut up?' to Jin-oh
8. When Seol's bag was ruined
9. When Secretary Kang changed the Eugene O'Neill potrait to a bespectacled one
10. When Se-ju realised Jin-oh possesed the fluffy dog before, hence why the dog chose Jeon Seol, not him. They put an actual lease on Go Kyung Pyo, ha!
Okay I'll just stop here. Is it too obvious how much in love I am with this show?

This show does cliffhangers so beautifully. The bittersweetness of watching their friendship blossom in their past. Bittersweet because melancholic moments like that always turn into a tragic love story ?

The comedic parts were hilarious, I laughed a lot in this ep. The bromance is so funny! I can't get over how charming both the guys are. Yoo being smitten, the painting, THE DOG part and the walk of devastation when Seol couldn't see him ?? Ko Kyung Pyo shines when he does comedy, being from SNL and all, in the past. Even though this ep. Was funny, there were parts where it was heartbreaking to see Seol not being able to see why SJ acting the way he was. I want all to have a happy ending, together ???

I was okay with Seol taking doggy Yoo away from SJ to give to Tae Min. I want doggy Yoo to spy on him and inform SJ of all his bad deeds (if he's on team SJ and not evil himself) But the downside is, he might get abused :((

And while I am IN LOVE with Yoo Ah In and Im Soo Jung, Go Kyung Pyo was a delight to watch in this episode. He's been consistent, that one. I await the day he takes the lead :)

Oooh doggy becoming a spy - YES. I must say Kwak Si Yang is doing pretty well as a baddie here. He's an animal in real life and him acting the opposite, convincingly too, is pretty cool.

I don't know whether Yoo purposefully did that, but his constant presence at Seol and Se-joo's meeting certainly didn't help Se-joo's bad case of foot-in-mouth. He can be really impulsive and aggressive when someone did something he deemed as "step out of line". And Yoo's aggravatingly innocent and amused expression definitely only worsened Se-joo's rage. I was cringing whenever he started yelling and shouting at the invisible Yoo and consequently, hurt Seol even more. It must be frustrating for him to not be able to offer a proper apology to her for his unintended jerkness.

On another note, am I the only one who breathed a sigh of relief when Se-joo took the dog away from Tae-min? I get kitty Seol déjà vu when he suddenly offered to take the dog from the vet office.

This episode really brought out the contrasting elements between Yoo and SJ. Yoo is more gentle, innocent and sweet. And though SJ can be sweet at times, he can be quite aggressive and impulsive. Even the way he tried to guide Seol to hold the gun was done in an aggressive way, unlike Yoo's which is calmer and steadier. Such a vast difference compared to his 30s personality.

I am so disturbed by Tae-min! Poor kitty Seol, she even needed a surgery after he flinged her across the room. And am I the only one who initially thought he kidnapped Seol to force her to become his assistant? Although he technically didn't, he sure is a skilled manipulator.

And hooray, Fluffy the dog is back! I missed him. I thought he was dead after Jin-oh left his body.

Another hooray for more 30's scene! The trio were so lovely, I'm sure it'll be heart-breaking to see them all broken up after this. Those lines at the end though! Who's whose comrade and lover?

That conversation was super-weird. It felt like Tae Min was being very careful with his wording, laying a trap and waiting to see if Seol would be so embarrassed about forgetting while drunk that she'd just agree outright to be his assistant. I was really happy that she stuck to her resolve, at least initially, even though she eventually did give in to a different manipulation.

Speaking of the final manipulation - surely she's going to at some point read "Fate" again and recognize parts of it were lifted from the manuscript of Se Joo's that she read at [product placement omitted], right?

Being serious now, the plot thickens! Eeeep! Like how do we wait another week after that episode ending? The new OST is so on point too! I agree about the frustration with Korean not needing pronouns for it to work. I do think that by lover, he meant beloved, like they BOTH liked her. Yoo is so adorable so I don't think I can be ready for an evil guy reveal. Please don't let it be that!

Ugh. My anxiousness when Seol let Taemin take Gyunwoo home. Girl! He's an animal abuser! Just no! Kwak Shiyang is killing the role though. Such an awesome actor.

This episode was great! Had me laugh a lot and left me wanting more. Love the antics between poor Se Joo and Jin Oh.
Jin Oh is so cute and is sorta innocent. I hope he was a good guy in the past. But when Soo Hyun joked with him by calling him a traitor, I wonder if that is a clue for the viewer and that he really became one. And the fact that he cannot remember his final moment seems troubling. (I was just reminded of Goblin's Reaper~) Maybe he was the one that Soo Hyun shot. Maybe his last moment was unexpected, which left him stunned and unable to move on.
Enjoying this drama a lot. It feels so rich with the layers from the past. I like the sound effects/OST and cinematography too. The sound effects have been done well.

I´m starting to understand why Se-joo is such a drama queen, seriously he grew up in a toxic household. All three of them have mental problems. Good for him that he left that place, or he might start throwing kittys to. I was so shocked, even though you do not see it on screen. While watching that my cat was sitting next to me and she reacted to the cats screaming sound.

Oh, this episode!

I) Things that made me laugh/happy
- Sorry Se-ju, I just kept laughing as you were trying to cope with the fact that Yoo is a ghost. ? Yoo should have given him some time to recoup his sanity first though instead of hounding him like that. ???
- Bang-jin and her metaphor hahahaha that got me laughing as well. A horse and a muscle, a very interesting choice indeed.
- Yoo! He seems like such a sweet friend, his friendship with Hwi-young makes me feel warm inside.

II) Things that made me sad
- Se-ju not being able to control his outbursts at Yoo when Seol is around is only driving them apart, which makes me sad. It also opens up the possibility of Seol going to Tae-min (more on that later). Please try to rein it in Se-ju! Don't let Tae-min succeed in stealing your girl, even if you're still in sweet denial about liking her.
- Mrs Baek you horrible horrible person. Poor Se-ju.

III) Things that gave me the heebie-jeebies
Baek. Tae. Min. When he brought Seol to his writing place, I was screaming GET AWAY FROM HIM, SEOL!!!!! Glad the coffee wasn't spiked, phew. What is up with him anyway, was he trying to lie to her that she agreed to the arrangement? Luckily she remembered. Manipulation foiled, Tae-min. They're still working together though! It leads me to wonder if there was any parallel in the 1930s between Soo-hyeon working with past Tae-min. Hmmm. Please step up, Se-ju. I'm genuinely scared for Seol.

IV) Miscellaneous thoughts and reactions
- Oh it's on between Se-ju and Tae-min. It's worrying that Tae-min knows Se-ju so well though, I can only hope the reverse is true though I doubt it is.
- I liked the reveal that Chicago Typewriter was Hwi-young's work. I still think Se-ju will feel weird about his past self being his ghostwriter? In some way, that's what it is, isn't it? Was Hwi-young's novel incomplete because he died? Or maybe it wasn't completed because something happened? I'm starting to wonder if Yoo was the one who died instead, since if you were shot in the head with a gun from behind, you probably would have no clue how you died...
- "our lover"?!?!?!?!?!?! What a cliffhanger. All the more excited for Friday and Saturday to come round now!

Main reason I started watching, really, cuz despite it being suuper unlikely, I can't shake the feeling that when it finally does happen, it's gonna be in smth very similar: mysterious buildup, epic casting, unique / original kind of story, & more of a slow reveal / surprise twist than smth openly promoted beforehand. And I want to see it happen "live", not just read about it later, lol.. so here I am again, even after being let down by Goblin's writing (but omg, the cuuteness of LDW sure made up for it!) & getting more smitten every ep! ^__^

The way Se-Jo freaks out, rolls his eyes, and faints makes me laugh to tears. I know that I should feel sympathetic towards his situation but it's too funny not to laugh ...hahaha. The insanity level of Se jo surely goes up a notch further, and it is a total delight to watch.

Yoo Ah-in can also play love-struck dork amazingly. His super cute crush on Kim So-eun was my favourite thing about The Man Who Cannot Marry.

I now see Se Ju almost as another abused animal. All these years later, he's hostile to Tae Min but doesn't actually want to hurt him, he just doesn't want TM close enough to hurt him again. Aggressive animals that either lash out or hide usually have abuse in their backgrounds, maybe Se Ju isn't so different from a big beautiful dog as he wants to be.

This week's episodes really painted Tae Min as a guy I wouldn't mess with. Before this week I thought there might have been pressure or a situation that made him feel his only option was to steal the manuscript. But this week we saw behind that mask (I was scared he put something in her drink to be honest when they went to his office. But he didn't need to, since he's so skilled at manipulating those around him to see him as the innocent).

Who else finds the friendship between the two of them in 1930 adorable... They are so happy, loving and caring of each other.... Especially GKP... He even got an expensive typewriter for his friend..... He didn't get that for himself ( according to story he is also a writer, right??) Hope that friendship blooms again in the present...

I jumped for joy when Se Joo took Gyeon Woo back from Tae Min. "He was my dog originally." That was such a fist-pump moment. Nobody wants to work with you, Animal Abuser! And leave the doggie alone! At least Jin Oh was inside and can protect himself, but I was pleading with Se Joo to stop making Tae Min mad or else he'll take it out on the dog. "Your cat looks like a dog." I burst out laughing at seeing Jin Oh on a leash. How did Jin Oh possess Gyeon Woo in the beginning? The typewriter was still in the box when we first met Gyeon Woo. Did Jin Oh summon the dog?

I am extremely bummed that Seol can't see Jin Oh. I feel so sorry for Jin Oh having to watch Se Joo fall for the woman he loves, but it seems like Jin Oh already knows since he asked Se Joo if he was going to let Tae Min steal Seol from him. These friends are just destined to love the same girl.

I feel incredibly protective of Se Joo. "As soon as the dog gets on your nerves, you'll neglect him and abandon him." Don't say that to him, Seol, because that was how Se Joo was treated when he was little. Tae Min’s mother is straight-up evil. How can you tell a child to live like ghost? I wish Writer Baek never took him in. Like mother, like son.

Thanks lots for the recap, @gummimochi!

I am a bit confused about one thing. Yoo said only SJ and Seol's friend can see him but what about Mr. Baek? When he entered the studio it looked like he could see him or was he referring to the first draft of the Faith manuscript??? Any ideas?

So when he said SJ has something no writer should have he was talking about the manuscript? Why should SJ not have that? Because it would put his son into a bad light if found? I thought he cared about SJ more than TM...

Hmmm good question there. Maybe Writer Baek has some misconceptions about how the whole thing went down? o_O Or maybe it's something like no writer should have the draft of another writer's published work?

I don't think there are misconceptions. He knew his son was trying to imitate SJ's pen, but was doing so unsuccessfully. He might have known his son couldn't have come up with such a great manuscript like Fate.

That seems strange even if Mr. Baek knows.
TM said that SJ was not able to protect what was his (I assume it was the manuscript) so I wonder what Baek really knows...

Yeap, he saw the manuscript for "Fate".

My favourite most scene of this episode:
Jin-oh: Is that the exorcist?
Se-ju: It might be a massage therapist.

And then Seol was in front of Se-Ju's door!

By the way, Jin-oh is the most fashionable ghost in K-drama, I bet where he has several suits! The black one suits him the best. Where does he store his suits for change?

I believe Jin Oh will be the catalyst to not only Se Jo’s writing, but also his life and his relationship with Seol. He’s the one who first brings Seol to Se Jo, who serves as his muse to his writing, and who would probably change the way Se Jo sees his issues regarding relationship and abandonment. When he asks “How long will you let Tae-min steal everything in your life from your writing to your relationship with Seol..”, it feels like Jin Oh is setting up an elaborate plan of changing Se Jo’s life, and Seol is involved in it (yes! by playing cupid too!).

The typewriter symbolises their love for each other, and I’m more curious of the reason why Jin Oh is not reincarnated like the other two. He might be lingering in the typewriter because he has an unsettled business, and presuming the novel is the unsettled business, if it is completed, will he finally be at peace and disappear? When Jin Oh told Se Jo that the novel was the story of 3 of them, their bond must be strong enough to withstand anything, and I do believe the 3 of them love each other greatly, either as a lover, or as best friends. So the typewriter was their heart and soul, and the key to solve the mystery. So it’s no surprise that of all the places, Jin Oh would stuck there. Assuming a murder happened (as glimpsed by Soo Hyun), something tragic must have happened to their relationship (oh! future! heartbreaks!) So was one of them really a traitor? Or was everything that happened in the 30s have other outside influence? Or was it one big mess of tragedy of error?

I already loved episode 5, but episode 6 put the cherry on top! Now we know that Sejoo also has this talent of seeing ghost before the whole fiasco began, just like Bangjin. It's just that he suppressed it. So this detail really piqued my curiosity. The whole battle with the ghost is so damn hilarious! I don't want it to end. The 1930s scenes are so wonderful and beautiful! And thank you @gummimochi for translating the “Perhaps, The Words I Wish To Hear Most” by Jung Hee-jae. I really really love the passages that Seol highlighted for Sejoo. Finally the show took local writer's work that Korean viewers can relate.

Hmm...I think Jin-oh is calculating both in past and present. In past we know he betrayed them but it might be his intention from the start. He probably needed Hwi Young and Soo Hyun to work together and inspire each other but if they become lovers it would ruin the plan or in that case even one of them wouldn't be saved so he lied about having feelings for Soo Hyun. He probably failed and brought harm to both. To redeem himself he was/is trying to complete CT however again he needs Seol and Se-Joo. Also Taemin is clearly using Seol. For now weirdo chef is only one who truly loves her lol.

Interesting theory! I do think Yoo did something in the past, however in the present I don't think he is going to repeat his mistakes. At least I hope! I think Se-ju truly loves her too, he's just in denial about it currently. Oh poor Dae-han, he's never going to get the girl with all these writers around her.

I'm also rooting for Ghost Yoo to redeem himself but when I think the scare he gave them before he revealed himself I really don't think he loves Seol. Doesn't make sense that he is not jealous of Se-Joo. He has seen enough to notice Se-Joo is different around her. But Se-Joo has a long way and I hope Seol will be oblivious to his feelings for a while ?

I just thought if Jin-oh truly cared about them at least he would want to save one of them and sacrifice other as he carries his plan. But if Hwi Young and Seol loved each other that's unlikely to happen they wouldn't betray each other. I think in the end Hwi Young never expressed his feelings and died for her. And So Hyun was the last one to know about this.

Interesting. A couple of episodes ago he mentioned that sinners get reincarnated into writers...so maybe SJ did betray them and that caused Seol to turn against him and kill him? Those times were tough and nothing was black and white...just shades of grey. Maybe SJ did something with his writing (maybe it was not his intention to put Yoo in danger but it did or it was jealousy) and that caused Yoo to be discovered and maybe executed by the Japanese? And that made Seol decide to avenge her friend?

Hmmm maybe that's why Se-ju is rich in this lifetime. Remember Bang-jin's sentiment about the descendants of the pro-Japanese being rich while those of the pro-Independence being poor?

But Seju came from a poor family. He became rich through his own "tears and blood" (as he always said). The descendants of pro-Japanese are rich because they inherit wealth from their great great grandfathers who got lotsa properties (e.g: land) from the Japanese.

Yes! I'm trying not to be too certain about any theory for now haha, being open-minded and looking at all our guesses. This writer likes to trick us! I still feel more strongly that Hwi-young did not betray his comrades and that Se-ju is a self-made man. :)

1

I don't think Yoo is trying to redeem himself by completing CT. He doesn't even know what happened to himself in the 1930s. He thinks by completing the novel, he can find out what happened to him that led him to be trapped in the typewriter.

I thought he was writing CT in past just before he was threatened with gun by Soo Hyun. Also his soul is attached to typewriter which has another owner so it's likely he also used it and that's his unfinished business. He thinks he will know once it's completed but we are not sure. At some point narrator of story might have changed.

I laughed so hard on this episode, and cringe in few scene. Totally enjoyed this episode!
Haha, Se-joo need to learn how to compose himself whenever Jin-oh jumping into whatever he's doing. Couldn't blamed Se-joo to histerically yell at whoever in front of him though the yelling is for Jin-oh.
I'm sure Se-joo is not Tae-min half brother but not sure what is inTae-min's mother. Surely Dad was only repaying debt to Se-joo's mom, but brings in you 1st love son back home? No wonder the lady of the house furious!
I'm sure that Tae-min got hidden agenda in recruiting Seol as his assistant editor? (this is the sub I get from viki) And why do I get the feel that he's trying hard to get out from Se-joo shadow by taking Seol?
I laughed so hard when they actually put dog leash to Jin-oh! And I love the trio back at 30s, looking forward to next episodes!

Late to the party but better late than never? ?

I found it amazing that Tae Min went from a misunderstood overshadowed writer (first episode) to seriously freaky possible psychopath (this episode) just because of that one scene last episode where his eyes changed and he harmed his cat. Was anyone else getting seriously sinister undertones everytime he so much as said anything? Even his smile to Seol had me fighting chills. Kudos to the writer and actor for the amazing depth to the character added.
I felt sorry for him previously, but when he shamelessly autographed his Fate book for Seol, which he didn't even write himself(!)- I decided that clearly integrity isn't one of his priorities at all. So if kitty abusing didn't do it, being blatantly unapologetic for stealing someone else's work certainly has- he is dead to me.

Which is what makes him so different from Se Joo- who would rather give up his career rather than take credit for something that isn't his own. He may be a prickly pain in the ass, but he's one with a backbone and integrity! And that makes a world of a difference to me.

I wonder when Se Joo will finally join hands with Jin Oh in earnest- perhaps once he truly believes that the story was his all along, even if it was 80 years in the making.

And that means more of 1930s scenes which makes me one super happy camper! Can't Friday come any sooner??

At first I thought Tae Min might have a split personality, but episode might confirm the hunch of him being a psychopath. Or suffering from some hereditary mental disorder. His jealousy and obsession towards Se Jo gives me the creeps that he's one heartless two-face evil dude who don't give a damn about others but himself. Cat abusers are exactly that.

It's funny though because I didn't think he was jealous and obsessive to Seol until possibly this episode.... I thought he genuinely liked her when they had that nice moment where she shared about The Silence of the Cows with him.

But now it's all 180 degree changed.

Plus, you know a character is bad when we rather root for Seol to end up with a 80 year old ghost than him. XD

I can't believe TM autographed Fate too, and gave it to Seol at that! He is so shameless, taking credit for something he didn't even write! Initially, I thought TM just had some shades of gray, but I doubt that is the writer's intention, given what has transpired until now.

I love how Yoo's feelings for Seol are portrayed - both in the present and the past. In the past he seems to be loving her from a distance, admiring her, encouraging and helping her to achieve her goal. He's like this presence of strength for her.

And in the present it's so cute how he's so eager to express his feelings for her.

But in both timelines, it feels though he doesn't mind Se-Ju having feelings for her as well. In fact, he seems like he encourages him to. In that sense Yoo is the most interesting second lead I have seen so far!

In the beginning, I have this little theory why Ji-Oh's soul was stuck in that typewriter. I thought that he really did became a traitor and outed Hwi-Young and Soo-Hyun, for whatever reason that is, and in order to save Hwi-Young from the Japanese and get tortured Soo-Hyun killed him instead. When they were caught in the hideout, Soo Hyun got killed by the Japanese and Past Jin-Oh committed suicide because of guilt. But the more the story progresses, the more it seemed far-fetched, because I could not just imagine Past Jin-Oh betraying his friends and become evil. I refuse to go there. Now, just who did SooHyun killed in the 30s?

Thanks for the recap. I always get something from the recaps that I miss in the show.

At the end of recap of Ep. 5, you wrote ,"down the rabbit hole we go".
I laughed when I read that, because when I was watching Ep. 6, it reminded me the film Harvey. Jimmy Stewart has a pucca (spirit) friend that takes the guise of a 6' 3" rabbit he calls Harvey.

Like Harvey, Chicago has some funny comedic moments and that works well. I look forward to learning more about the past lives of our writers and freedom fighter.
The part that still doesn't work for me is the traumatic childhood and the Hater Stepmom. ? Why writer? The story could proceed without it. The ? portrait, lol. Bang-jin, pucca spirts often take the appearance of ? horses!
