Yoo Ah-in offered tvN fantasy human rom-com Chicago Typewriter

I’m excited to have more information about the new drama titled Chicago Typewriter, which was previously announced with very little plot or background information, only that it would be he next drama from hit writer Jin Soo-wan of Kill Me, Heal Me and The Moon That Embraces the Sun (it name-dropped Park Shin-hye as a potential lead, but those claims were soon refuted).
Now the tvN series is actively courting Yoo Ah-in (Six Flying Dragons) to star, and if he accepts the offer, it would be Yoo’s first project for tvN, though not on cable; one of his biggest hits was JTBC’s intense melodrama Secret Love Affair in 2014. The drama is described as a fantasy human romantic-comedy series, and the description seems rather quirky: The character Yoo Ah-in is up to play is a bestselling writer whose super-popular hits and movie-star good looks have propelled him to stardom; not only is he seen as an idol of the literary world, he’s got so many fans that there’s even fanfic written about him.
The character made his debut by winning a literary contest at the age of 21, and his personality is described as sensitive, prickly, timid, and melancholy. The twist? The story also involves writers who lived hard lives in the 1930s during the Japanese Occupation, who are reincarnated in the present as a bestselling writer who’s now in a slump, a suspicious ghostwriter who hides behind that bestseller’s name writing on his behalf, and an “anti-fan more terrible than in Misery.”
I’m working to put all those pieces together in my mind, and I’m not quite sure what tone it’ll be aiming for—although I recall that Kill Me, Heal Me was also a wild mix of genres (comedy, melo, romance, thriller, mystery) that ended up working out in its favor. And writer Jin did also write 2007’s Occupation-related romance Capital Scandal, so she clearly has an interest in the time period.
Chicago Typewriter will be a Friday-Saturday drama that follows time-traveling romance Tomorrow With You (which premiered today). It will be a 16-episode series and premieres at the end of March.

TVN sure know how to make a hits in this time slot. right after Goblin, they give us Tomorrow with You and followed by this drama. all connected by time traveling and fantasy. they intend not to follow the trend but create a trend. salute!

He actually can't go at the moment - I've read his enlistment has been put on hold (yet again, he's undergone several medical tests) because of a shoulder injury. Apparently they can't decide what classification to put him in, so till then he just waits until they call him for further medical testing.
I guess better to do some work than wait around I guess...it could be months or even another year until he goes

tvN seems to really be going after the fantasy market lately. I'm excited to hear about the 1930s part! It's a period of Korean history that I wish was explored more in dramas. Not all historical dramas have to be Joseon and Goryeo ya' know!
However the premise sounds very similar to Saimdang, with the reincarnated artist/writer part. Hopefully viewers will like this more?..

Mmm, that's kind of like asking "what's the difference between Renaissance Italy and Napeolonic era Italy." Same country, but a different time: different customs, way of dressing, and speaking. Goryeo's culture was more focused on Buddhism, women had a lot more power, and I think divorce was actually fairly common. Joseon's culture was all about Confucianism which emphasized scholarly skills and occupations over other things.

I am surprised that he hasn't gone yet either. He needs to go very soon right? Not that I don't want him in another drama but I am sure that they will send him the papers and he will be going soon enough.
A lot of 1987s entertainers already went right too? Some 88s too. In any case, it's not confirmed so somehow I doubt he will accept if he doesn't know about MS yet.
He's acting skills are no joke so I hope he gets good projects after MS.

This is what I gathered from other sites: Yoo Ah In received three judgments of suspension of military service due to a shoulder injury since 2015, and he said that he was undergoing rehabilitation in order to enlist. The Military Manpower Administration and Yoo Ah In have repeatedly stated that nothing was set except that he is to be re-examined. After he gets re-examined, he will find out whether he will serve active duty or supplementary duty (like social work services). The period of time for the next re-examination can't be decided, because it depends of the injury/the healing, and it could take longer than 3 months of waiting. So, in the meantime, rather than staying in a limbo of doing nothing, he actually can do something fruitful with the time he’s wasting just waiting, such as taking another project.

I am actually the opposite. I am glad Park Shin-hye isn't taking the role. I just am not a big fan and I can't really tell you why. I have never finished any drama she has been in- not even 'You're Beautiful'- I know, crazy right?!? But, I love Yoo Ah-in, so hopefully they will cast a talented actress. If TVN can snag Gong Yoo, then hopefully they can cast someone amazing and high caliber. Fingers crossed, praying to the dramagods!

Me three... I like Park Shin Hye.. but i still think she has long way to go to be a convincing actress. Though her best work happens to be in tvN (Flower Boy Next Door).
With Yoo Ah In onboard, I'd like to have a female lead who can match his aura and acting skills.

Oh I don't want her to be in this drama anyway because it focus on the lead when she is at the level that she can has her drama now. Leave it to other "talented" actresses.

Well, it’s their opinion and they’re entitled to have it and I say this even as a PSH fan...
But honestly, YAI or any other actor would be lucky to act with her. You can just look up from different articles where several actors, actresses (some of them have been decades on scene and are highly respected) and directors have expressed their desire to work with her. A couple DB commenters who don’t have any special feelings for her (or who have the need to put other actors or actresses on pedestal on her expense) won’t really affect to this fact. She’ll still stay relevant, and she will be paired with their fave in one point or another. It’s legit hilarious how they’d hate if their fave is being paired with her when in reality their oppar would really love to work with her lol

It is clear that they have their biases so when shin hye appear in the news of drama or movie related those known name here in this site appear as they know who will be suitable or not so offending her acting isn't something new for them they will keep doing it as usual her last drama is a prove that how much they comment badly in comparison to the other drama .
For me I want her to be in drama without any boy so I can't see those in her articles wandering like crows annoys us with their words

I also find the drama description rather vague. I find it hard to delineate the characters that will be in this drama from that description. Will there be four pivotal characters, an idol-like best-seller writer, a reincarnated writer, a ghost writer and an anti-fan? How they will be connected is rather puzzling.
Anyway, I think there goes our action packed drama with blazing guns.
Gong Yoo had been the top contender in my list that would win Best Actor in the next Paeksang. With Yoo Ah in the mix, along with Ji Sung and Han Suk Kyu that will be a difficult category to top.

Actually, I’ll be pretty happy if any of these four actors (Ji Sung, GY, HSK and YAI) being nominated or even better win that category. Because the actors did a good job and their dramas do well. For YAI, it depends whether he accepts the offer and how his performance in it. Some might disagree, to each their own I guess.
Of course there are a lot of good actors in dramaland, but I think perhaps it’s naive if I think judgement is made based solely on the performance that’s if I looked back on the recent trend of winners in Paeksang. Perhaps, the list of winners might not get unanimous agreement from everyone, but I think it could be understood why the winner won that category.

I sure hope so! I remember he appeared to be a shoo-in for the award in 2015 but lost out. His performance right now is just as (if not more) brilliantly than in Kill Me Heal Me so I've my fingers crossed.

GY hasn't got a nomination for best actors even his 2 movies won big.

Sorry. Actually, Gong Yoo did get a Best Actor nomination for Train to Busan in the 11th Asian Film Awards. The result hasn’t come out yet as the award will be held in March.
I’m not sure about this but from my few observations, film awards including Paeksang (Film Section) tend to be more transparent in selecting the winners.
But I’m not sure about the Paeksang (TV Section). For instance, I think PBY is more deserving a nomination in the last year Paeksang for Best Actress compared to some of the other nominees. But I still respect the selection of nominees because perhaps in that award performance alone is not enough to guarantee a nomination as OMG rating is rather lackluster compare to other nominees’ work.
Perhaps GY is on the top of my list, but I do acknowledge the possibility that Ji Sung and HSK have higher chance to win it. To each his own I guess. Anyway, as I had mentioned before, I’m pretty happy if any of those mentioned actors win that category and Paeksang is months away, so there might be other actor that will prove his worth?

Ooh~ Yoo Ah-in! I really like him as an actor. I don't know much about him as a person, but I recently watched a video of him giving his Thank You speech for his Best Lead Actor in TV award at the 52nd Baeksang Arts Awards and he's quite a quirky fella. Haha. I like the main character's description and the fact that he's an idol-like writer is amusing to me. The ghostwriter part is also interesting!
I remembered reading the post about Park Shin-hye being courted for this drama, but I guess not anymore? I wonder how the final cast will turn out. Based on the synopsis though, it doesn't seem like a female lead is even needed...

I'm still stuck on the fact that Yoo Ah-in will be in a rom-com. I wonder if Kim So-eun could do this, I know she's doing that wtf drama OGS, but if Chicago Typewriter won't air until after Tomorrow With You, she might be able to fit it in. I'm so torn between wanting her to rest and wanting two of my faves to work together again. They were so cute in The Man Who Can't Marry.

Is he going to accept or not, that's the question. I'm excited if he's going to be interested in this. There is no way for him to enlist at the moment, much as I would love for him to receive a settled result from the military about his service, if he cant have that yet he definitely should be able to keep busy doing what he loves

I thought this would be a thriller because Chicago Typewriter is a nickname for a type of gun, ha! Either way, glad to have my city's name represented in a drama even if it won't actually have anything to do with Chicago!
But seriously... Any dramas want to film an episode in Chicago? I can be a personal tour guide for the cast and crew. Free of charge! I'll get them the best food in town! And I know a guy who knows a guy who knows the owner of the Cubs. ;)

Ahhh i want either one. But if this is so male focused, maybe MCW or MGY wont be that interest But it is just maybe. That's why I am curious more on the details so we can imagining further. I seriously want YAI to act someone on par with him. His previous partner, SSK was not totally bad but I want better.

I thought this will be an action one, since the title is a type of gun..I really wish shin hye to have a tvn drama again, and a plus if yoo ah in signed into this project, what a pair! .but I guess she won't do this if this will be aired next to shin min ah's drama since she's still filming her movie so it will be unlikely or else if they will move this on the second half of the year.
If shin hye won't be in this, and yoo ah in signed, the next I really wish for him to be paired is park min young.. I still can't move on with my second lead syndrome in skks.they really have great chemistry! .pls pls pls reunite..

I would like PSH in this drama when the rumour of she gt offerd to act in chicago typewriter but thn the news cm out tht she was not offered the fmle lead role by her cmpany.
And still i hope she is the female lead in Chicago Typewriter. With Jang Dong Gun or Zo Insung or maybe Kim Soo hyun, ji chang wook as the male lead.. kekeke
Yoo ah in is not my favrite actor but if they cast together in ths drama, i hope their chemy will daebak! Park shin hye is love...

OMG...the best news of 2017 so far. Please please accept it. Quirky and complex fits Yoo Ah-In perfectly. I thought I would have to wait for 2 yrs to see him on my small screen. I still have serious withdrawals from six flying dragons...that show sparked my interest in sageuks but I haven't been able to complete any other sageuks since. Praying to drama Gods for a good story & cast
