Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju: Episode 15

Bok-ju’s and Joon-hyung’s roles are reversed in this episode, as suddenly he’s the one that needs her to be there to support him through a difficult time. But it’s not an easy job to be someone’s rock, as Bok-ju is finding out — the job comes with a pretty hefty emotional price tag of its own.

EPISODE 15: “That’s how you became an adult”

Joon-hyung looks stunned as he sees his mother for the first time in over a decade. He’s crying by the time she steps close to ask if it’s really him, his face crumpling like a child’s. His mother says that he grew up better than she expected, and reaches up to touch his face tenderly.

Joon-hyung’s aunt worries about him, knowing that his mother planned to look for him today. She asks his uncle if he thinks she’ll mention the postcards that she’s been sending as if they were from his mother.

Joon-hyung and his mom sit at a coffee shop, the air awkward and heavy between them. Joon-hyung can barely bring himself to look at her, and answers with a short “yes” when she asks if he and Bok-ju are very close.

She asks about his swimming and he starts to cry again, and she gives him a pair of sneakers even though she’s unsure of his size. She says she’s been thinking of him a lot, like whether he’s grown tall and how his face may have changed. She apologizes for not coming to see him sooner.

They have dinner with his aunt and uncle and Jae-yi, and Joon-hyung chokes on the piece of fish his mother sets on his spoon. He asks “Mom” for a glass of water, meaning his aunt, but his mother stands as well, causing an uncomfortable moment.

He walks her out to catch a cab, and she takes his hand, and he finally looks at her. Before she gets in the cab, she asks if he wants to come to her hotel tomorrow, so she can make him a meal. He agrees to come, and gets her phone number. After she leaves, he looks at the hand she was holding, and smiles a tiny smile.

He goes to school to see Bok-ju, and grabs her in a big backhug when he sees her. She notices that he seems happier than he was earlier, and he tells her what he and his mother did today, and about their plans tomorrow night. He tells Bok-ju about holding his mother’s hand, and she jokes that she’s not going to get jealous this time.

Bok-ju does admit that she’s a little jealous, because she’d like to have a mom who could come visit her, too. Joon-hyung tears up at that, and blusters that she has a great dad and uncle instead, not to mention his awesome self. He grabs Bok-ju in another hug.

The next day, Joon-hyung readies to head to his mother’s for dinner, and he tries on the sneakers she gave him. They’re a bit too small, but he puts them on anyway, determined to make them fit. That seems like a bad omen.

He goes home to pick up some photo albums to show his mom, and finds his aunt, uncle, and Jae-yi talking about money. He listens as they talk about “that child” needing surgery, and making plans to sell some land to raise more money.

Despite the talk of a sick child, all Joon-hyung hears is that his mother only came here for money. He steps into the room and asks if it’s true, and starts to sob as he says she should be grateful for all the years they fed and raised him.

He’s utterly distraught, and only grows angrier when his aunt tries to explain that there are extenuating circumstances. He screams that it doesn’t matter, and asks how someone who hasn’t even contacted them for ten years could do something like this.

His aunt realizes that Joon-hyung must know that she’s been sending the cards and gifts, not his mother, and he confirms that he’s known for a long time. He turns his anger on her for not telling him the truth and making him pretend not to know, and says that he’s ashamed because he knew she was lying for his sake.

He demands to know how they could even consider giving her money, asking if they consider him that pathetic, or if they just want to feel good about themselves. That’s going too far, and his aunt reflexively slaps him. Angry now, she spits sarcastically that she raised him so she could get into Heaven, and Joon-hyung runs out of the house.

Over at the weightlifting gym, Coach Yoon yells at Bok-ju in front of the entire team, accusing her of not training hard enough. He tells her to just quit and go to Taereung (the Korean national training center), then grins — awww, he was tricking her!

He laughs, and tells her that she’s been invited to train at Taereung. He says there will be an interview with her tomorrow, and she’s to report to Taereung this very weekend. Bok-ju is in shock, and the whole team celebrates.

Uncle Dae-ho takes a delivery at the chicken restaurant, and the new girl making the delivery (cameo by Kim Seul-gi) is decidedly flirtatious with him. She asks him for a soda, and he’s mesmerized by the way she knocks the cap off the bottle and drinks it in one go, pinky-out of course. She gives him one last cheeky smile, pokes his cheek, and leaves him trying to literally slap some sense into himself.

Nan-hee and Seon-ok are thrilled for Bok-ju’s good luck in being invited to the national team, and she tells them that her dad is happy too, since being a national weightlifter was always his dream. They’re sad that she’ll be going away though, and Nan-hee asks what she plans to do about Joon-hyung.

Bok-ju tries to call him, but he never answers the phone. Shi-ho notices that she’s worried and tells her that’s what dating is like, that you worry when you can’t get in touch, and everything makes you wonder if their feelings have changed.

Joon-hyung’s aunt is worried sick about him, feeling guilty that he’s known about the postcards and gifts for years. His uncle assures her that Joon-hyung will be fine, and his mother calls to see if something happened to him, since he didn’t show up to their dinner.

Nan-hee and Seon-ok get all gussied up for Bok-ju’s interview the next morning, since there will be a group photo. Tae-kwon runs up and asks Bok-ju if she was with Joon-hyung all last night, since he never came back to their dorm. They start to grow worried that something has happened to him, and Bok-ju calls Jae-yi to talk.

He tells her about the family fight yesterday, and how Joon-hyung learned that his mother only came back for money. He’s not surprised that Joon-hyung has run off — he says that Joon-hyung had to grow up too fast, but that he’s really very tender-hearted.

When it’s time for Bok-ju’s interview, the whole team stares at the door, and jump into action the moment it opens, ha. It’s only Coach Choi, who tells them to act natural, only to have them do it again when Coach Yoon walks in (wearing the most hideous suit ever, lol).

Her friends tell Bok-ju not to worry too much about Joon-hyung, but she can’t help it. She steps out to call him again and gets his voicemail, and this time she leaves a message. She tells him that she knows what happened, but asks him to send her a message so she can stop worrying.

Thank goodness, he’s okay — he ended up on their beach last night and fell asleep in the sand, like a stranded starfish. He dreams about his mother leaving him, then coming back, and when he wakes he finds that the too-small shoes she gave him have caused bleeding sores. Angry all over again, he throws them away.

The weightlifting team is hilariously awkward when the interviewers finally show up to film, following the camera around and acting completely unnatural. Bok-ju is distracted when it comes time for her interview, but she tells them about her slump, and how she overcame it with help.

She mentions her family, her coaches and friends, and starts to mention Joon-hyung. She thinks about all the times he’s been there when she needed someone, and she ends the interview. She rushes out, determined to find Joon-hyung and be there for him this time.

He’s still not answering his phone, and she leaves an angry message, fussing at him for worrying her like this. She goes to the river, then the beach, but Joon-hyung is nowhere to be found. Her last message is tearful and furious, and she sobs she’s breaking up with him if he’s going to be this way.

Uncle Dae-ho stops at a convenience store for snacks, and finds himself a bit short on cash. The delivery girl shows up and pays the difference, and they end up having a drink together. She leans in close and says he’s cute, and even recognizes him from his (very tiny) movie roles.

She’s drunk as a skunk later, and invites him to her place. He gallantly tries to turn her down but he’s not made of stone, and he eventually caves.

It’s dark by the time Bok-ju gets back to school, and she finds herself outside the swimming pavilion. She goes in just in case, and finds Joon-hyung floating face-up in the pool, fully clothed. She screams at him to come out but he doesn’t move a muscle, so she takes off her coat and wades in, yelling worriedly as she moves towards him.

He finally looks up when she touches him, but he hardly seems aware of what’s happening. In an emotionless voice, he says that his mother didn’t come to see him, but to ask for money. He whispers that he thought his mother was suffering all this time the same as he was, “… but I was just fooling myself.” Oh, sweetie.

He admits to Bok-ju that he’s embarrassed, toward himself and toward his aunt and uncle. His voice breaks and he cries, saying that he’s sadder now than when his mother abandoned him as a child. Bok-ju hugs him and he cries on her shoulder, still standing in the middle of the pool.

Eventually they get out and dry off, and Joon-hyung listens to Bok-ju’s angry messages and smiles a little to hear how much she cares about him. He enjoys it when Bok-ju towels off his wet hair, and cutely objects when she calls him a pretty baby.

Bok-ju fusses at him softly, telling him how worried she was. He ducks his head and says he heard her message, and asks if she’s really going to break up with him. Bok-ju says it was a warning, and he smiles and says that she likes him a lot. How could she not, when you’re looking at her that way??

Bok-ju gives him a mild beating and says they have to go, but Joon-hyung doesn’t have any shoes. They wrap his feet in plastic bags and she piggybacks him a short way, but decides he’s too heavy, so she parks him on bench and goes to borrow some shoes from a sunbae.

He puts them on and snuggles up to Bok-ju, apologizing again. She tells him that she can understand his mother, and uses an analogy to explain that her first priority right now is her sick child. But she says that he needs to go apologize to his aunt, and admits that she heard how upset she was from Jae-yi.

She doesn’t pull any punches when Joon-hyung is reluctant to do it now, and tells him that the longer he waits, the worse it will be. She takes him all the way to the pharmacy to make sure he doesn’t chicken out, and shoos him inside (it’s so cute how he calls her “noona” when she’s being bossy).

After walking as slowly as humanly possible, Joon-hyung finally goes in. He gives his aunt a bag of roasted chestnuts, her favorite, and starts to peel one for her. She gently takes her hands to stop him, and offers to make him some tea. As she does, Joon-hyung walks up behind her and backhugs her, and apologizes.

He jokes that his bad behavior is really her fault for raising him too gently, which makes her laugh. He apologizes again, saying how thankful he is for her and his uncle and Jae-yi, and how much he loves them.

Joon-hyung nuzzles his face in his aunt’s hair, and says she smells like a mother. His aunt quips that she was too worried about him to wash her hair, and now they’re both laughing.

When it’s time for Joon-hyung’s mother to catch her flight home, Joon-hyung surprises her by showing up to see her off. He looks lighter and more accepting now, and she genuinely thanks him for coming. She starts to say something, but he interrupts and thanks her for giving birth to him.

He says that that’s what he came to say, and gives her the handkerchief that he’s been holding onto ever since she left. He says that he’ll be okay without it now, and asks if she has a picture of his sister. She shows him a photo, and says that her name is Amelia.

Joon-hyung asks his mother to bring her to visit when she’s well, and shows his mother a picture of Bok-ju (aww, it’s the one he took during the fireworks). She recognizes Bok-ju from seeing her at school, and he tells her that she’s his girlfriend.

Dr. Go is shocked when Jae-yi shows up at her new office, and he jokes that she probably wouldn’t believe he was just in the neighborhood. He says that he just wanted to see her, and she asks why he’s suddenly doing things he’s never done before. Jae-yi says that he doesn’t have anyone to eat with since she left, and invites her out now.

Some girls make moony eyes at Joon-hyung’s handsomeness on the bus ride back to school, and Bok-ju pulls his turtleneck up to hide his face, hee. He pulls it down and she suggests cutting off all his hair. Sorry girlfriend, still not gonna work.

She finally tells him about being accepted to the national weightlifting team, and that she’s leaving next weekend. Joon-hyung is thrilled for her, and she’s surprised he’s not upset that this means they’ll be apart.

He says that the winner of his next swim meet gets an invitation to Taereung, so he’ll just win and join her there. Bok-ju is so excited that she shoves him to the swimming pavilion to train, bribing him with kisses. Such cuteness.

Joon-hyung trains hard, determined to win his competition and go to Taereung with Bok-ju. She makes him sandwiches and sends him back to practice after he steals another kiss, as they shoot finger-hearts at each other. They wish at the wishing fountain for him to get over his “start trauma,” and soon it’s time for the race.

Bok-ju is there to cheer, and Joon-hyung looks for her in the audience as he gets ready to start. He seems calm and ready, and as the whistle blows, he dives into the water with no issues whatsoever.

He doesn’t have the fastest start, so he has to struggle to catch up to his rival in the next lane. It’s a close finish, and Joon-hyung comes in second place by only a tiny fraction of a second. Damn.

Meanwhile, Bok-ju’s father gets the news that a kidney donor may have been found for him. He makes an appointment for the next day for further testing, telling Dae-ho that he wants to wait until after he sends Bok-ju off to Taereung. He asks Dae-ho to keep this quiet unless the donor is confirmed.

Joon-hyung looks disappointed when he rejoins Bok-ju after his race, but she smiles up at him and gives him a hug. She tells him that he did a great job overcoming his start trauma, and that now he can just work on improving.

As they walk back to school, Joon-hyung knows exactly how long until she leaves, down to the second. He tells her not to escape because he plans on following her soon, and she tells him that she’s assigned Nan-hee and Seon-ok as his “paparazzi.”

He offers to escort her to Taereung tomorrow, but she says she wants to go alone. She warns him to spend all his free time training so he can join her, though she asks him to look in on her dad every once in a while.

She gets a call from Nan-hee, who asks her to stop by the weightlifting gym. Joon-hyung goes with her, and decides to take advantage of the dark room for some smooches. Of course that’s right when the lights go on and the entire weightlifting team yells SURPRISE!, then freezes at the sight of the two kissing.

Once the awkwardness is over, the coaches give Bok-ju some words of encouragement, and she thanks them for all their support. Coach Yoon has Joon-hyung introduce himself, then tries to claim that he was totally that handsome when he was young. Coach Choi interrupts and proposes a toast, wishing Bok-ju luck at her first competition in China.

Bok-ju is ready to leave in the morning, and her father and Dae-ho see her off. Dae-ho offers her a ride but she says she wants to go on her own, and she asks him to take care of Dad. She salutes them as if she’s going off to army duty, and Dad watches her leave, both sad and proud.

As Bok-ju takes the bus to Taereung, she thinks, “Joon-hyung-ah, I’m leaving. I couldn’t show you, but I’m really nervous and scared right now. Will I be able to do well? After I open that unknown door and enter, what kind of world will be waiting for me?”

Joon-hyung looks at the photos of Bok-ju decorating his locker, and he also thinks, “Don’t worry, Bok-ju-yah. You’ll do well. You’re much stronger and prettier than you think you are. You’ll shine brilliantly wherever you are. Kim Bok-ju, swag!”

Bok-ju enters the national training center, and in her heart, she promises Joon-hyung that she’ll wait for him, and asks him not to wait too long. Joon-hyung gets ready to train, determined to join her, and in his heart he promises that if she waits, he’ll follow her soon.

“I miss you, Jung Joon-hyung.” “I miss you, Bok-ju-yah.”

COMMENTS

Awww, what a great episode. This show just can’t take a wrong step — it continues to get better, and has never experienced the late-stage slump that so many dramas suffer. It never drags out any of its issues, handling them with just the right timing but moving on quickly, so that instead of a few long, drawn-out problems, we get new situations and new conflicts every single week. It’s just perfect, and I’m going to be so sad when it’s over.

In fact, I’m very curious to see where the finale next week takes us, because as far as I’m concerned, the show could end right here and I’d be completely satisfied. We know that Joon-hyung and Bok-ju’s love will carry them through whatever comes, whether or not he’s able to join her at Taereung, and I think I would have liked this as an open-ended finale (and I don’t normally care for that sort of thing). But I have faith that whatever the final episode brings, it will be just as poignant and meaningful as the show has proved itself to be, week after week.

I’ve said, more than once, that I believe that Nam Joo-hyuk’s acting has grown by leaps and bounds with this drama. I hadn’t been able to tell though, if it’s just that Joon-hyung is the perfect character for him, or if he’s really gotten that much better. But this episode really drove home the fact that he’s not just thriving in this one role. Every time Joon-hyung cried, I cried right along with him — his pain was so real and palpable. But the scene with his aunt, when his heart was breaking at the thought of his mother only coming for money… that scene convinced me, then the one with Bok-ju in the pool decided it. This isn’t just a case of an actor and a role suiting each other. He’s truly growing as an actor, almost before our eyes, and I think he has the potential to be a truly gifted performer.

You know, in a way I think Joon-hyung is better off without his mother in his life, because she clearly doesn’t see how special and amazing he is. He has a mother and a father who adore him, and a brother who dotes on him, and that’s a gift that I’m happy he acknowledges and appreciates. It’s not worth his emotional effort to pine after a woman who doesn’t appreciate the wonderful man he’s become enough to keep even in minimal touch, who only showed up because she needed something, and not even from him. He was unfortunate collateral damage in her quest for money, and I don’t honestly care why she needed the money… even if she has a sick child, she didn’t have to travel halfway across the world and show up in front of Joon-hyung to ask for it. There’s absolutely no excuse for not making a freaking phone call once or twice in ten years. But I’m glad he finally saw her for what she is — a mother, but no longer truly his mother. And if nothing else, it cemented the love that he and Bok-ju have for each other (and I love that when he ran off, he went to the place where he first told Bok-ju about his mother abandoning him), and gave Bok-ju a chance to be there for him in an important way, like he’s consistently done for her.

But you know, I think that I was mistaken when I said that up until now, Bok-ju hasn’t supported Joon-hyung the way he supports her. His biggest complaint with Jae-yi (and his adoptive parents, too) is that they’re too nice to him, which inadvertently made him feel like an outsider in the family. Of course that’s not what they intended, but not being yelled at, not fighting with him, just made Joon-hyung feel like he wasn’t truly part of their family. But Bok-ju has never done that — she’s always spoken straight with him, fussed at him when he’s wrong, and she’s outspoken about his screw-ups when he makes them. Even now when he’s at his most vulnerable, she doesn’t let Joon-hyung off the hook about worrying her and everyone else. By letting Joon-hyung know when she’s disappointed in him, Bok-ju isn’t treating him with the kid gloves that make him feel separate. She’s honest because she loves him and she knows he can do better, and that’s love right there.

I agree. Never have I been this satisfied with a drama. NJH's scene with his aunt was... so heartbreaking. His expressions, tone, everything was so spot on. It's such a hopeful, heartwarming, loving, sweet, positive and family oriented drama. And the story never lost sight of... well, the story. It's about two college athletes who are competing for a chance at gold, to follow their dreams, to experience love, to go through some tough growing pains, find friendship and realize the importance of family - all of this with a healthy, realistic and abundant dose of skinship and kisses!

Gah! I love this drama! I swear I could watch two episodes a week of this drama for a very long time! NJH and LSK have amazing chemistry - I wish to heck they do another drama together (although given Korea's propensity to not recast same leads in same drama too often, this may be the last of this pairing).

Alas, Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo and Swimming Adonis Jung Joon Hyung, how I love thee!!

this is on Wed/Thurs and Goblin is Fri/Sat drama..

anyway... this indeed deserves a higher rating....
this reminds me of come back mister which I think is much superior and better written than DOTS...

I'm amazed with Nam Joohyuk's acting in this episode. I could feel Joonhyung's heartache as I myself was getting hurt too. He portrayed it so great, I could totally see he has grown so much as an actor from seeing his past dramas. I wish you all the best, NJH!

True. This episode made me tear up from the beginning itself and then I was crying in happiness too by the end of it. I have forgotten what I did on wednesdays and Thursdays apart from waiting for new episodes. I don't see myself taking the end very well. Nam Joo Hyuk was perfect today. Perfect. And LSK complemented him in every minute. Apart from a lot other bests that this show has done, i like most the use of flashbacks . Utterly beautiful. How JH had been there for BJ and how now they were sure of being there for each other. BJ even tells him to take care of Dad.

Yes to the flashbacks here!! I can't stand it when a show replays the same flashback scene multiple times across multiple episodes (e.g., LOTBS spear stab), as if that scene hadn't already been shown like, 15 minutes ago IN THE SAME EPISODE?

Also, Weightlifting Fairy is sooo beautiful and the OST makes me sooo happy GAAAAAHHH what can I look forward to every mid week after it's over T-T

That's the funny thing about dramas. Just when you're trying to figure out what to do with your life when your favourite drama ends, another one comes along to sweep you off your feet. The only question is how long it will take for that to happen.

I mentioned the use of flashbacks in the previous episode and I'm so glad someone else also pointed it out. I am in awe of this drama. There are no unnecessary flashbacks because this drama just has so much to show and offer. I love it so much!!! When they use the flashbacks, it's always so potent to the actual storyline. It's beautifully done.

This drama makes me so freaking happy that I don't know what to do with myself sometimes. I started watching around the time Boys Over Flowers came out, so about 8 years now, and a drama has never brought such a huge grin to my face or made me squeal like this one has. It's a bit saddening that the ratings aren't there, and that it's coming to an end soon, but it has been an incredibly entertaining watch and I'm glad I gave it a go.

Couldn't agree with you more. I've been watching for about 20 years and I can't believe it's only in the past few of years that dramas (for the most part) have been changing things around a bit. This drama is in a class of itself. I'm so sad that it's coming to an end and so underrated by SK's audiences. :(

What I love about the writing - I love how they had me sobbing for JH and then 2 minutes later I was laughing through my tears at Bok Joo's uncle and his love at first sight over Kim Seul Gi. LOL~ well, he definitely has a type! I almost felt guilty that I was laughing out loud when just a minute ago I was so sad for JH. Gad these manipulative genius writers!!

At first, I was mad the mom got off so easy, but then I was fine with it. Just go away, take care of your other kid and leave him alone. He'll be fine without you. He has a real mother already. I also felt he was saying goodbye for good when he gave her back the handkerchief and thanked for her giving birth to him. That's all she'll be to him. His birth mother, but never his mother. She said she'd visit, but I don't believe a word she says. She also doesn't deserve to have him in her life. Even how she left annoyed me. He had to run to her, she didn't bother to try to contact him again once he didn't show up once. She didn't know he was gone and she said she was upset she couldn't see him before she left, again I don't believe her. Seriously a horrible woman!

NJH did an amazing job this episode. He's young already, but he really did look like a lost little boy when he tried. I wanted to give him a hug and I cried with him.

BJ and JH remain relationship goals. They are adorable and I'm so glad she finally got to do something for him. l that they'll both be there for each other no matter one. I also had the complaint about her not helping him, but when you mention her.. just by being herself she helped him so much. I can't believe there is only one more episode. I'm so going to miss this show.

"NJH did an amazing job this episode. He’s young already, but he really did look like a lost little boy when he tried. I wanted to give him a hug and I cried with him."

It was amazing. Because LSK is so tall that you forget how tall NJH is, and when his face crumpled up multiple times this episode he really did look like a big kid instead of a young man. So when his brother tells BJ that JH had to grow up so quick and actually is really soft-hearted, it made sense because you could actually see it. Everyone was so great today.

Ang KBJ. Dang. Literally. Whenever she cry. I cry. ?

When NJH is standing beside anybody who is not LSK he looks so freaking tall. When he is next to his aunt or when BJ and JH got found out by their friends and you saw how big his feet were when she was crawled up on the chair, you get reminded about how tall me is.

I completely agree with you on Bok-joo and Joon-hyung being relationship goals.
I think the moment I enjoyed most during this episode was right after his race. Joon-hyung comes out crushed that he came in second and she's standing there waiting for him, with the biggest grin on her face. You can read it in his eye how disappointed he is that he didn't win... though it's not about the win itself, it's feeling like he's failed her.
I couldn't help, but giggle as Bok-joo makes those silly smiles, raising her eyebrows at him before opening her arms to him for a hug. It was such a beautiful moment to me because during the entire exchange two of them didn't say a word. Yet, we could read both of their thoughts and feelings.
Due to the fact he loves her, he feels like he's let her down. Meanwhile, because Bok-joo loves him, she is not disheartened. Their eyes spoke volumes about what their hearts were feeling. I think that's what I love about this couple... they are soo in tune with one another whether it be in trial or triumph.
How poignant a thought, to have someone who loves you, supports you, and believes in you beyond any extenuating circumstances. They've seen each other at their lowest and at their best, therefore their bond in wordless connection is strikingly strong. It's been such a pleasure watching their friendship grow and change into such a pure, unadulterated love.
I'm so proud of them both! Can't wait to see the finale, but sad to see this show end even more!

I absolutely loved that scene when she greeted him after the race. I liked that we saw his disappointment after the race when he was still in the pool looking up at her. His facial expression there said everything.

Can we put pics in these posts other than linking them?

Yes, I completely agree. I think JH drew a clear line. You are my birth mother. Thank you for giving birth to me. But I have a real "mom" and a family who loves me. Take back your handkerchief, I don't need it - or you - anymore.

I tried to give the birth mom the benefit of the doubt too but I agree, it's just hard to. There's just no excuse. And for you to not even have the insight that your son could be hurting so badly bc of your behavior. She's not his mom, never was. Lollypip is right, in ten years you couldn't call? Couldn't write one postcard (we're not even talking about letter here), you couldn't freaking email? Text? Nothing? No one is that busy, not even the President. So, yeah, "been busy living" just isn't an excuse.

I'm glad Joon Hyung let her go and got closure. There are plenty of other people who love him and appreciate him for the wonderful person he is.

I legit cried reading your afterthoughts, LollyPip!! Especially that last bit about Bok-ju being brutally honest with Joon-hyung, which shows how much she loves the guy.

As for me, I flooded the house watching this episode. No sooner did Joon hyung shed that first tear, that’s it, I was balling my eyes out! Omo, is this really Nam Joo-hyuk we’re talking about? I mean I cried a river when Bok-ju cried, but with Joon hyung, it was downright ugly crying.

1st sobfest: The scene where he first meets his mother. The poor guy didn’t know what to do with his tears! One moment he was weeping like a broken child, and the next, he was trying so hard to bury some of that awkwardness which comes with being a grown up. When he brought his hand to his neck as if trying not to lose himself to the tears - that gesture felt pretty real; You’re so embarrassed of openly crying, but the tears just won’t stop falling, gah!

2nd sobfest: When he confronts his family re the real reasons his mother came back in the first place. He totally let himself go there – to the point where I could barely recognise his face coz it was just awash with tears, as was mine at that point. Arrrghh! My heart! Didn’t think he’d bring it to us, but mad props to NJH who in that moment made the feelings of suppressed anger, trepidation, and contemptuous embarrassment on behalf of his birth mother so palpable that you could trace his every emotion based on the tone of his voice and facial expression.

My heart broke to pieces during this scene! Ah, so terrifically angsty, but in the raw sense – love that the scene heavily relied on the acting here. I wasn’t forced to feel any of the pain, it just came to me naturally as the scene progressed, right along with Joon-hyung.

3rd sobfest: When he bitterly cried in front of Bok-ju, relating to her his feelings of guilt, anger and embarrassment. I love the subdued quietness with which he did this.

It was so different from his previous outburst - which felt so raw and alive, whereas here, he was more contemplative, but boy did it deliver on the feels; and with Bok-ju by his side, providing all the solace he needs, be it with her words of tough love or the way she encouraged him to take action and make amends - *I’m dead*

I don't think I'd mind an open ending with this show, too, but I still think it definitely needs another ep to give it more of a rounded closure.

Super, super, SUPER show! And so on point with the feels! Ahhh, can't believe we've reached the end *sobs*

Seriously, I can't believe how much better he's gotten! I didn't think he was that good in School 2015 or Scarlet Heart, and while I've been loving him in this show, like Lollypip I wasn't sure if it was because the role was such a perfect fit. But his crying in this episode...wow. I'm honestly just so so impressed by how much he's improved.

0

Yeah, and i love the small tears that want to escape from his eyes when he hugs bok ju at the bench, after pool scene.

Man, I can't believe how good Nam Johyuk here. His acting improve by leaps and bounds that I start wondering what happen in his real life. Of course there's probability of good director, but this probably a case of actor finally enjoying the art of acting. I saw it in Vic Zhou and Lee Bo Young, where they always bad (or bland) in many projects until the 'one' comes along. And not only they suddenly able to emote, they start to improve from one to another project, like miracle. For Vic Zhou, I think it start on Mars and Lee Bo Young was My Daughter Seo Young.

I really hope Kim Bokju is that one miracle for Nam Joo Hyuk. Because my love for Joon Hyung start to extend on him thanks to this wonderful acted scenes by Nam Joo Hyuk

I cried so often this episode my spouse thought I was watching a melodrama! So satisfying to see Bok Joo tell that boy what he needed to hear. It helped him grow up towards his aunt, but Bok Joo never discounted his real and understandable hurt. My heart broke for him. I don't understand a parent who not only doesn't try to see their child for a decade, but doesn't even email or call or send a bleeding postcard! My father left when I was a young girl and I didn't see him for several years, but he called on my birthday, sent presents, and, yes, sent postcards.

Lovely acting from our leads. They are adorableness personified! I'm going to miss them when this is done.

Oh, thank you so much LollyPip for the fast recap, you're awesome as always.

To be honest, I was kind of disappointed that they didn’t flesh out Joon Hyung’s struggle more. Was I short changed perhaps, or were my expectations too high?

I wish they could’ve incorporated the whole Taerung thing for the second half of the episode if they wanted to lighten the mood, but they should’ve left the first half to Joon Hyung. I felt kind of detached about Bok Joo getting into Taerung because it came after Aunt+Joon Hyung scene (I was still crying my heart out, you know. Let’s face it: Nam Joo Hyuk nailed that scene!), then suddenly they cut to Bok Joo getting into Taerung and then the festivities, like WHAAT, where’s the follow up? Where is Joon Hyung? Show, don’t CITT me!

Then there’s the after-pool scene (with yet again Nam Joo Hyuk nailing the pool scene, gah my heart really just hurts for him) Bok Joo was telling Joon Hyung that she sorts of understands his biological mother a 'little'. No, no, no. No matter what the reason Mom has for being a very really crappy Mom, no child deserves to feel unwanted and abandoned, and I guess what I just wanted was for Bok Joo to be there FOR him, instead of reasoning against his feelings and actually sympathizing with Joon Hyung’s Mom.

I don’t want them to be sentimental for the rest of the episode, but it felt like they walked around Joon Hyung’s issue which is totally not fair for his character. I wanted to see what he was feeling at that moment and how he overcame his start trauma, because I still haven’t figured out WHEN he overcame it. (Yes, I'll go rewatch again in case it's just me who wasn't able to catch it).

Real Mom got the easy way out, it should have been her and not the Aunt to receive Joon Hyung’s backlash, no take that, both of them needs to know a piece of Joon Hyung's mind.
Sorry for ranting. Ah show.

But the things I really enjoyed was how happy and supportive Joon Hyung was when Bok Joo told him she’s going to Taerung and Bok Joo leading Joon Hyung home to Aunt and convinced him to not delay his apology. And I was laughing out loud during the “He’s so handsome!” bus and gym scenes. I don’t know what to expect for Ep 16. Please show, don’t let me down, pleeeeeeeeeease.

End note: Dear Nam Joo Hyuk, I fully support you now, please accept the Habaek role.

I also didn't like BJ saying she understood the mom a little, and implying that he should be grateful to even have a mom because she doesn't. No, sweetie. She's so wrong there.

I can get her not wanting him to be bitter, but the woman abandoned him and came back to see his family without a care 10 years later, and only did so for money. There's nothing you can understand there. To say she has other things to do than deal with you was just not a believable thing to say. The mother never seemed to care about the first child's suffering, but we are supposed to understand her concern for her other child's illness. Nope.

I kind of agree with this, but I also see where Bok-ju was coming from. She didn't negate his feelings in any way by giving her perspective, which I felt made sense in its own right. And I think the finger analogy she gave was perfect. Yes, he's hurting, but the mother is hurting too - just that the reasons for their hurt are two separate issues. And sometimes, as an adult, you have to come to term with your own pains in order to see the plight of others.

Though broken, I think Joon-hyung is at an age where he's able to let go of some (if not all) of that pain and see the love he's receiving from the people who matter the most. Hence why his embarrassment made perfect sense later on.

Had he continued holding a grudge against his mother, then he wouldn't have been able to let go, nor would he have been able to heal 10 years of pain. He wanted closure, that is it, and though it wasn't the type of closure he was hoping for, he was at least able to recognise what was important as a result of it.

Coming to terms with your loss is all part of growing up, and I think Joon-hyung did it beautifully.

I do get why she said it, and it doesn't take away from all she's done. The analogy does work in theory, but JH has long been the finger that hurt for the past 10 years (and the mother did not care). But I just don't like what the writer was doing there, to forgive the mother of all sins because she has a sick child. It's just ridiculous.

Though I would not want BJ to encourage his feelings of abandonment either, so it's a tricky situation to be in for her. I think it's great JH forgave the mom, but I'm annoyed she just went way with her money (and doesn't Canada have universal health insurance lol why did she need so much cash) with no consequences at all. She didn't even have to suffer knowing the pain she's put JH through all these years.

And JH did everything right. I agree, as an adult, it was time for him to let go and come to terms with the fact that that woman isn't his mother anymore.

Lol, true.

I think this show has done pretty well to deliver to our expectations and more - you know that feeling when you wish for characters to say exactly what you're thinking, and when they do, it's like hallelujah!! Except with the mother's arch, it feels like they fell a little short. It's that kinda frustration, me thinks.

0

HAHAHAHA! Maybe she was getting treatment in the US?

0

LMAO I'm Canadian and I went "Wait a minute" at the surgery part. There's no way her daughter wouldn't be covered.

0

You know, I'm kinda glad with the mother arc. The more I think about it, its so true to life. That woman is just gbeseh!!! She should go with her drama. And thank you for coming back to give uri Joon Hyun the closure he needs( no credit to you), no go with your bad news, buhbye!! She was always "OYO for you" she hasn't changed one bit.

1

Yes, I'm not even Canadian but I follow enough world news to smell a rat when the Canadian resident needed money for surgery.

They should have said she was in the US all along and never mentioned Canada.

0

I think she was just trying to find a silver lining with his situation just to cheer him up. It wasn't great advice but it was something definitely Bok Joo would say given how her personality is.

I understand people being torn about Bok-joo giving Joon-hyung the advice to be thankful he has a mom. Yet, I think we're missing the purpose of her statement. It was not a "I have it worse than you."

You see my dad has raised my siblings and I with this same advice. Whenever I am frustrated with something he reminds me it's all about PERSPECTIVE.

I had to spend some extra money to get my car fixed?
How thankful I am I have a car that I can fix.

My heating bill was on the high side this month?
How thankful I am that I live in a house that has heat.

Struggles and stress at work today?
How thankful I am that I have a job to go to.

My dad says, it's about perspective. Point of view. It's kind of like counting your blessings backwards! Instead of being torn up, angry, or disappointed when things don't go the way I plan or want... I realize there is blessing even amidst the struggle.

Yes, I absolutely agree that how Joon-hyung's mother treated him is beyond horrible and totally unfair, but I think Bok-joo was trying to change his perspective for a moment. Sure, he has a biological mom who let him down in a big way, but better than that he has an aunt who has raised him and loved him wholly and completely since he was young. Double the blessing!

Its an interesting view. I guess thats where he is coming from when he said thanks for giving birth to me. Cause she is a horrible mother BUT she could have just get an abortion as well. So yeah he can be glad to have mother, who gave birth to him.

But otherwise I wouldnt want to see my mother at all. And I wouldnt be ablt to forgive her. But yeah, its good that he was able to overcome it!

1

Yup, exactly. It's not to invalidate his feelings but to provide him with the perspective he needs to move on and realize that has an amazing set of parents + hyung that gave him so much love and support. It's telling that her primary concern for him is to return home to his aunt and apologize to her. Her perspective I think, is to show him that he can be upset at bio mom for being shit but don't do it at the expense of the mom that loves him likes own. To understand that you can walk away from this stranglehold because you have the love and support you need. I think it's a healthy perspective to have. Sure she may not deserve any sympathy, but it's not about her. It's about JH being mentally healthy and whole and for him to do that, he has to make peace with the fact that the woman who gave birth to him doesn't need to love him like he wants in order for him to be this amazing person. He has the people that matter in his life already so he can let go of the unnecessary baggage.

It's true in life too. I watched my good friend love a man that just couldn't love her back the way she wanted him to and the way he treated her was inappropriate. It wasn't until she started to gain back her perspective of the amazing life she has even without his presence that she truly started to see the toxic hold he had taken up in her day-to-day. So, while the other side may be deserving of our anger, disdain, and disgust, it doesn't mean that it's worthwhile for us to feel it all the time. And while in some cases it serves as a form of catharsis to be angry, in other instances like here it can become a type of mental block that holds us back.

So basically, perspective is important y'all ;)

1

Your dad is awesome.

I think here comes the culture..If u see all the dramas, the parents get off no matter what they do 99% of the cases just because they are the parents and the kids should always forgive them because they gave birth to the, that somehow it's viewed wrong of the kid to hate etc at the parent even if he did horrible things...If it was my case i would never forgive someone like that no matter what and indeed is just a person who gave birth not a real mother but like mentioned i think asians have a really strong bond to this maternal thing...That women was indeed shameless and heathless

It's this filial piety and respect the elders thing. Drives me nuts.

I would never forgive a mother like that. No circumstances explains why she didn't bring him to Canada. She agreed to marry a man who wouldn't accept a son. And honestly it would have cost thousands for the airfare and hotel. And she's here for cash.

But yeah this whole " must forgive and understand " part is nuts. There is no logic to it. That woman was clearly selfish and no number of anog6 of her concentrating on her hurt is going to work. So what if he hates her and resent her? Why can't he?

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Filial piety seems to say that elders can get away with anything because elders are never wrong. That is just not true. Elders can totally screw up. Acting like they didn't when they did or brushing it under the rug just hurts everyone more and actually makes it easier for them to continue messing up and continue hurting people. One reason I tend to stay away from family sitcoms...the mother-in-law is never wrong for being downright abominable to the daughter-in-law-to-be.

The "elders can get away with anything" has recently been digging at me even more than usual because my father is currently going through the most recent bout of this with his mother and her manipulations. The thing I remember him telling me after one particularly bad holiday is that there is a difference between forgiveness and forgetfulness. He has forgiven her for what she has done, but he hasn't forgotten. Forgiveness is about the past; it means we don't hate her for what she did. Forgetfulness is about the present; to forget would be to ignore her character. By forgiving but not forgetting, it means we interact with her now without animosity but with our guard up so that what she cannot hurt us. That was an important distinction for me. I forgive; I don't forget. And I wait to see if she will change to rebuild trust. And if one day she actually does change, maybe then I will forget. But until then, I will protect myself emotionally. All that to say, filial piety taken too far raises my blood pressure for many reasons.

I'm going to wade in to add another cultural difference that has changed or is changing now in Korea: from what my Korean mother has always told me, up until recently, from ancient times, in the case of a broken marriage, the wife had to leave the household and the children behind forever. There was no further contact. That is because the children were considered the father's, legally, and she had no rights to them whatsoever. So that pattern of behavior exists as a subtext.

That is a big difference to what we are now accustomed to in the Western world: where the default custodial parent is generally the mother; and where divorce and remarriage is so much more common and not considered a scandalous secret. Consider that if Joon Hyung's mother remarried, it would be considered normal (by Korean standards) to hide that she had ever been married before--and Joon Hyung would be clear evidence of a previous marriage.

In addition, Korea has the Confucian ideals of the parent/elder "knowing best" and having the rights to make the decision for the younger people--and even when the elders clearly don't know best, the younger generation bowing to their decisions from respect. There's a lot about that which is frustrating to the Western viewer, but East Asia is not an individualistic culture.

That hierarchy means there is a lot of unilateral top-down decision-making (as we saw when Bok Joo's coaches and father decided to make her go up a weight class) and control (as we saw when Bok Joo submitted to a beating from her coach). There's a lot that's not to my taste about that, but again, that's a cultural difference.

Well said Jamie! I think sometimes viewers forget that there is a cultural difference in play...what's accepted, what's the norm are just sometimes different in East Asian culture than Western culture. I wish people would remember this before passing harsh judgments and/or criticism.

0

Hi MC, I think it's a lot easier to remember and respect small or superficial differences in culture (food customs, shoes off indoors, bowing versus handshakes) sometimes than it is the big stuff: attitudes about parent-child relationships, marriage, gender roles, etc.

The big things feel so normal, instinctive, and unquestionable to us, but can vary so widely between cultures. We carry a lot of cultural baggage with us that we aren't even aware of--and even if we are aware, it can be difficult to accept. I know I struggle with it, sometimes.

0

I had a feeling whilst watching the airport scene that Joon Hyung didn't necessarily forgive his mom but rather decided that he was worth so much more than being the abandoned little boy that he'd been and that sometimes it's the family of choice who love you and has been there for you who you need in your life. It's a great parallel to the episode title of becoming an adult because you become an adult not by forgiving the people who've wronged you or hanging on to your issues, but by letting them go and moving on with your life, and in this instance, Joon Hyung has a great future to look forward to. The symbolic return of the handkerchief gave a decisive and final end to Joon Hyung's struggles with abandonment instead of cutting off his relationship with his birth mother, in my opinion, and I'm glad for that.

Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty mad at the mum because of what she did to Joon Hyung and having the sheer audacity to ask for money to help her other child whilst keeping all of this a secret from him. Even his family decided to lie and part of me wishes that had been addressed too. Still, though, Joon Hyung manages to be the better person (with Bok Joo's support). He's not expecting anything more from his birth mum, which is so important because he's finally learnt that she cannot give those things to him and to continue with that, or even to continue holding on to his hurts would just lead him back to square one. I actually think there's something wistful in Joon Hyung's face at the airport and that just tugs at my heartstrings even more.

1

Required fields are marked *

I think that the catalyst of Joon Hyung's start trauma has always been induced by the shock when he realized that his mother had in fact 'threw' him away when she left him with the hankerchief and the stress from his conflicting feelings about his adoptive family.

Therefore, the show depicted that the trauma was resolved when he was able to come to terms with that fact, which was evident when he returned the hankerchief to her, stating that he will be 'fine' without it now.

And didn't his psychiatrist emphasize that his condition was related to unresolved feelings? So since he has peace in his heart now, he is finally free from his start trauma.

But this is only my own interpretation of the story, and it may differs from yours. :))

I kind of hope he doesn't take it. He's grown so much in this role and his acting blew me away in this episode especially, but I'd rather he take another role like Joon Hyung next—something more in the slice-of-life genre. Fantasy is another level up in what it demands of actors—it requires something more than expressing believable emotions, the viewer also has to believe the character is immersed in a completely other world. A modestly more challenging role that builds on the experience he's gotten from WFKBJ would be better than trying to carry a fantasy, which experienced actors can't always pull off, and especially a fantasy with a built-in fan base from a hugely popular manhwa. I fear a repeat of CITT :p

0

@NaijaNoona

You know what? Now I am fearing that Bride Of The Water God may not be a good project for him instead of the other way round. The writer and PD are good but I'm afraid much of the ethereal beauty will be affected by the change of setting from saeguk to modern. Suddenly the story becomes ordinary.

0

He needs to grow out of uniformed productions if not people will hv trouble keeping up with their preferred otp. I think its a great vehicle for him. The writers already had him in mind when doing the adaptation. Let the experts do their job. They probably saw something in him that would fit the role. Im happy for him if he accepts. Its another career defining milestone. All he needs is a kickass actress and thats going to be solid for his resume. P.s - screenwriter and director is super prolific. He will be crazy to turn it down because of naysayers.

0

Still skeptical if Bride of the Water God is a good choice for him although the latest episode in Weightlifting Fairy has given me lots of hope of his improved acting ability.

Is it too much to ask for Lee Sung Kyung and him to play a couple again? They are just so comfortable with each other.

I get your point though I am looking at things a bit differently. You see the entire point of the transition was that despite it being a happy moment .. happiest probably for BJ, she's considerate and worried about JH. and as for his trauma, he's been working through it since the beginning.. attention to his relationship with BJ, helping her through her crisis must have given him a sense of responsibility and maturity which was being denied to him by his family out of protective love, then his outburst at Jae Yi, and finally the tipping point was meeting his mother. I think enough time was given depicting his suffering and emotional turmoil. The pool scene where he was so clearly able to say it out. that he was embarrassed for himself. embarrassed that his mother left him as a child, that she returned for money and that he behaved that way with his loving family....

Ah this I agree with, too!! I saw the pacing a little off this ep, kind of like adding speedx1, which is why I'm glad there's another ep left!

I do think this show would have benefited from an extra ep or two to allow for the characters more onscreen healing time; it felt like they were hopping from here to there a tad bit too abruptly, especially towards the latter end of the ep - the mother's departure, Joon-hyung's swimming competition, Bok-ju leaving - it all came about too swiftly.

I was also a little iffy with KSG's cameo too, as much as I find her adorable, I think they could have cut it down short, or not insert it in at all, at least not in this ep. But, hey ho, minor quibbles considering how epic the feels were this ep.

Me too! I am usually fine with how this show makes me laugh at one scene and then cry in the next .. the cycle repeats.

But I felt the editing was a bit off in this episode.. I think Joon Hyung's situation is just too heart wrenching to switch abruptly to something comical.
I love Uncle and his relationship dilemma.. but I wished their scenes were either put towards the end or not in this episode at all. I would have preferred having a scene where Joon Hyung reflects..

but hey, this show can't be perfect 100% of the time and I still enjoyed the episode nonetheless .. so I'll let this slide. xD

I understand what you mean. For me, the only quibble that I have is that they should have shown us the part of the process where he reflects on everything and decides to go and say goodbye to his mother, so we could actually see him changing, and hear his thoughts. It felt a bit rushed jumping from crying in the pool to saying goodbye and thank you. Although I was so happy for him, because letting go is the first step to heal. But yeah, the time devoted to JH felt way too short. They should have extended the series at least 3-4 episodes in order to give us a fully satisfactory end for everyone, haha!! :D
For the rest, it's not that bad. Bok Ju does not have a mother, so of course that has to influence her view on this. She could have been the perfect girlfriend consoling him and acknowledging that what JH's mother did is terrible. But Bok Ju is flawed and orphan girl who has a sick Dad, so I guess it's even more realistic what she said.

Yes, I was craving Joon Hyung's reflection the whole time because we all know how deep a person he is. I just wanted to be with him in the journey instead of seeing him in the finish line.

Three's the charm apparently, 3rd time watching the episode and I can finally see where Bok Joo's coming from, yep, as was already mentioned, it's not a great advice but a sound opinion coming from an optimistic person, and I think I can let that go.

I read the comments below, even Lolypip seems this scene is okay, so I quest for someone who think like me
I am really agree with you GedSkaiKru, I was really sobbing when JH got mad at her aunt, that scene really make me cry out loud, but it's really annoyed me when the movement come to BJ's big news that she enter Taerung. Oh come on, I am still crying and you make me feel the happiness for BJ accepted in Taerung, it just make me feel some sense of shit akward

And for JH case to overcame his trauma, I've already mentioned it in last ep, I know love can change people, but come on, love can change everything
And there is no scene of love shows us the moment that he overcame his trauma, there is no traumatic events that related to his trauma with done by both of them
Love is not a magic without action men

PS. I will love NJH from now, I used to think that young actor have lack skills in making audience feel the emotions of mad, angry, and sad. But you did it men, you did a good job, well done Joo Hyuka
Please accept the roles of Haebaek, coz I will watch you drama from now

I couldn't really get into the Taereung story too! But I wonder if it was intentional and meant to seem rather random, kinda like what Bok Ju felt about it.

After all, these athletes spend their entire lives training for the next competition, never knowing when their big break will come. But when that chance does come along it might not appear with much fanfare. In the case of Bok Ju, it took place a long while after her big win.

And it's also rather realistic, I think, to depict how good things (or bad one) do not always happen to everyone you care about at the same time.

Yeah I think that was the intent behind it. Because it takes her half of the episode to tell JH about it. We don't even get a celebratory scene between her dad and BJ. And throughout the episode, you see her grateful but mostly shocked. She doesn't really acknowledge it until after she talks to JH. Like every scene regarding it is basically everyone congratulating her but BJ looking worried. I think it was meant to show how minor this huge opportunity felt like because the person she wants to share it with the most hurting and missing all day.

I felt a bit shortchanged with how quickly it seemed Joon Hyung's angst over his birth mom was resolved, but on second (okay, and third) viewing, it grew on me. It's in character for him, especially given how much he's grown since Bok Joo has been part of his life, and given the family that actually raised him, who are kind and forgiving almost to a fault. After the shock of finding out his birth mother is…well, who she is—don't even have words for her—it didn't take long for him to realize, with some nudging from Bok Joo, that he has had the love and family he needs beside him all along. His birth mom is really not worth his tears or angst. Of course it's not as easy as all that, and I don't think he's over it forever, but he's come to a point of resolution and closure.

And it's totally in keeping with who he is, who he's been raised to be, and the man he's growing to be with Bok Joo at his side, that he'd go the extra step of seeing his birth mom off and making some kind of peace with her. Seeing her off, exchanging pictures of loved ones with her shows he's a better and bigger person than she is. The first time I watched that scene I was disappointed because his mom was receiving unearned forgiveness. But there's also a devastating finality to his gesture. It's made more so because his birth mom is too wrapped up in her own life to see what a lovely person her son is. She's so clueless about who he is, what he's gone through, and how he feels about her especially to realize her child is telling her he no longer sees her as his mother. I see him returning her handkerchief as symbolizing his letting go of the place she's had in his life for 10 years as his "real" mom—she's not unimportant, and he's grateful to her, as he said, for giving birth to him, but their relationship is not much more than that.

Joon Hyung's aunt totally didn't deserve the backlash from him, but it's precisely because she's his mother in all senses of the word besides biological that he was able to explode at her like that. It's precisely because he has no real relationship with his biological mother that he couldn't open up to her, couldn't even look at her most of the time, much less show her his anger, which is all about his pain, vulnerability, and insecurities. He felt safe doing that with his aunt and uncle and knew he could come back. It's one of those sad and beautiful and necessary things about real family that we sometimes show our anger more to them, the people who know us and will forgive us, than to more deserving targets.

I also wasn't happy at first with Bok Joo saying she could understand birth mom a little, but maybe that was part of what Joon Hyung needed to hear in that moment. She basically says his birth mom has other priorities, and they're legitimately urgent, but that doesn't mean his pain isn't real. Bok Joo already understands enough about Joon Hyung to see that it's more important for him to focus...

Whoops, thought I had stayed within the character limit! To finish the thought: Bok Joo already understands enough about Joon Hyung to know who his real family are, and that it’s more important for him to focus on his relationship with them than to resent a woman who no longer has a role in his life.

@NaijaNoona, yours is an eloquent comment that describes perfectly what I saw as well. Thank you.

I'd also like to note the serenity with which JH bid goodbye to his birth mother. I felt like calm and peace was emanating out of my screen from that pink turtleneck, so much so that it was noticeable in the moment. NJH impressed greatly with his emotional scenes earlier but that was some seriously strong acting, too.

Well said! Everything I wanted to say you already said. I understood that Bok Joo was not necessarily saying Joon Hyung should forgive his Mom, but that he should try to understand where she is coming from at this moment whether he likes it or not. And! that he should remember who really loves him and puts him first i.e his cousin's family.
Their relationship is quite a healthy one, Bok Joo and Joon Hyung, I really like it.
Also, I have to confess the editing today did kind of throw me off at times... not sure why....

Forgot to mention, I also really liked how Bok Joo was there for him this episode AND the things that she was saying. I agree with Lollipip that she doesn't treat him with kid gloves like most Kdrama couples do with one another. I LOVE them SO MUCH!!!!

Notice- she also disclaims it with "You may NOT want to hear what I have to say..." and you all mentioned she also doesn't say she he can't feel hurt and such...she's trying to bring perspective (as many pointed out earlier in the comments) so that he won't hurt as much.
sigh, I LOVE THEM!!

This is perfect. Well said.
That's how I interpreted it too. I think JH is such a strong person and stronger with BJ on his side that he just needed to really take this step to truly become an adult. Looking a person that doesn't value you enough to be here for you in the eye and telling them goodbye.
We saw clearly who he thinks of when he says mother. From the way it rolls off so easily to say omma to his aunt, to the badly fitting shoes from bio mom, to his awkward politeness around her versus the level of comfort he has to fight his aunt- you hurt the people you love in these little ways because you know they love you enough to understand. It's such a lovely step for mom (aunt) and son because just like he had to fight with hyung to get him to understand that he doesn't need to tiptoe around him, he needed that fight with his aunt to get her to see that she didn't need to coddle him for him to understand how much she loves him.

This was just a way to say goodbye to the extra baggage in his life that he doesn't need anymore.

I admit I teared up a little when I read your comment. I love Joon-hyung's real family so so so much. They are so sweet, understanding, loving and caring. It's no wonder Joon-hyung grew up to be such a great guy. How can he not when he has such a warm family?

Yes, he missed his biological mother, but honestly, if he had to ever choose, I know he'd pick his family over her eventually. Because in the end, she is someone who's honestly imaginary, a figure he thinks he lost and still desperately needs. But his family? They are a part of him. They are who he really needs and people who complete him and makes him the Joon-hyung that he is.

Sometimes it's important to get hurt and lose something completely because it makes you realize you never needed it in the first place.

I was also a little irritated with Bok Ju both times she seemed to minimize his pain a bit by saying that she didn't even have a mom. I thought, in that moment, that she was being really insensitive and not giving him space to have his own feelings, not acknowledging his right to have pain, regardless of her situation.

However, after thinking about it, I am okay with it for another reason. I LOVE how this show has managed to keep the emotional center firmly on Bok Ju. The show is named after her, and the writer has kept her firmly as the center. I can think of so may dramas where the female lead is supposed to be the "lead," but later in the male lead takes the center emotionally, and the girl just ends up being his sidekick or support. "Beautiful Gong Shim" is one example that springs to mind, where the titular character faded into the background once the male lead had some emotional situations to deal with.

Shi Ho and JH both had major issues, but instead of going off and exploring them alone, they were able to do so with Bok Ju's support. Bok Ju sat in the stands and cheered for Shi Ho when she made her decision to let gymnastics go. It is Bok Ju's dicussion of it with JH later that allows the watcher to process that event with her. Shi Ho isn't left alone emotionally, and we the watcher get to remain with our point of view intact. Bok Ju retains her emotional importance in the story line.

Then, with JH, we stay with her as she struggles to find JH. He struggles on his own for awhile, but, we, the watcher, mainly sit with Bok Ju as she she tries to find him. We are able to feel her worry, her concern, and her need to help him. I'm not saying Nam Joo Hyuk didn't do an amazing job portraying his character's emotional angst because he did (I can't watch those scenes again because I keep crying--keep crying!). But what I mean is, he didn't go off on his own, keep it to himself, work through it on his own, and then come back better. Instead, we the watcher get to be fully with him in that moment because Bok Ju continues to be the point of view and the emotional center that he needs.

So, as a friend, I'm not really down with comparing hurts (especially when that hurt is so new and raw), but as a watcher, I appreciate so much how Bok Ju has never left the story and remains the most important emotional figure from the first scene of episode one to the ending of this episode.

@holleyjane: Yes! Thank you!
I absolutely have to give credit to the writer and the production team that have portrayed a female lead so well that the camera and story never pan away from her long enough for us to lose her narrative in the story. (That's not to say LSK wan't amazing but that's a given, she's been stellar throughout this show's course). This is her story andher show so while its side character get to shine in their own story, we get it through BJ like it should be. Even when Seon Ok was having a hard time, it was through BJ's perspective.

Hell as much as I like LotBS, despite the character of a mermaid supposedly being the main character, I feel like the male lead's perspective dominates over the story so that we see her through his eyes more.
So I appreciate a story that definitely remained consistently hers throughout the show and gave us so many amazing moments to laugh and cry.

Great catch, honestly even though at first it was frustrating to see that even though it was about Joon Hyung's arc we see Bok Joo's perspective instead and then you backtrack and realize, duh? Weightlifting Fairy KIM BOK JOO. Of course, as a viewer, that's really a good props to the writer because as you said, this drama is centered on Bok Joo afterall, and it's nice that they didn't sidelined her during major resolutions..wow, why aren't there a love button for comments? Didn't expect my comment would thread such colorful and beautiful perspectives. It's awesome, it's broadening my own perspective.

YES!!! That's why I thought it was very real that life/happy things went on even though Joon Hyung's world was crumbling, because OF COURSE Bok Ju wouldn't have known what was wrong since Joon Hyung hadn't told her yet (and in the real world, life doesn't become all dramatic the moment one person is going through a hard time).

It's not like she's some omnipresent person who would stumble across Joon Hyung sobbing in some godforsaken corner of the school, or suddenly decide to take a day trip to the beach and coincidentally discover Joon Hyung there. She actually has to run around to look for someone who does not want to be found.

I thought Bok Joo with the finger analogy was trying to tell Joon Hyung that although his Mom came to borrow money for his sister it didn't mean she didn't care about him or want to see him at all. And it was true, she did have interest in talking to him and seeing his childhood pictures. Although she seems like a crappy mom, I understand why Bok Joo would say that. He was so fixed on being abandoned by her that he internally focused on being adopted into his family. He clearly worried family and friends would abandon him. I think with Bok Joo's help Joon Hyung was able to move past his feeling of abandonment to acknowledge the person who raised him as his mom. When he was speaking nicely to his biological mother in the airport, I saw it as him letting go of the pain she had caused him.

Real Mom got the easy way out, it should have been her and not the Aunt to receive Joon Hyung’s backlash, no take that, both of them needs to know a piece of Joon Hyung’s mind.

I feel everyone gave opinions on everything else on your post lol.

I think it is easier to yell and rant at the person who shows you unconditional love because you know they are there for you and will be there after. its harder to show your true feelings to someone when you have the fear that they will reject you but you are so desperate for their affection. to me it made sense that he ranted at his family versus his bio mom who is practically a stranger to him.

This I agree, I always berate myself for hurting the ones I love. The closer they are to me, the more comfortable I become, the more I become an *ss on one too many occasions. And yet as you have pointed out, that's the beauty of it, you trust impliedly that you know they will forgive you still. Sometimes, it's easy to lose that perspective when watching a drama because you see it as an outsider and sometimes a critic and sometimes you get biased too because you have characters you are rooting for and characters you'd love to hate, so thank you, really what you just stated was on point. ?

Required fields are marked *

I could see how it would feel like it got resolved quickly, but to me, it seemed a natural progression. I think in largely because of Bok Joo. When she told him about understanding his mother, I do not think she meant that she agreed with his mother. Take Jae-yi in a previous episode. We can understand why he punched the guy at the restaurant, but it does not mean he was right in doing so. However, since we can understand how he could get angry in that situation, we can let go faster and move on. It does not mean we ever agree or forgive the actions, but it can help us move on and choose to not think about it anymore. Joon Hyung's mother is definitely not worth thinking about anymore. I think he realized that at the pool with Bok Joo and when he apologized to his aunt; therefore, he was able to let go of his mother and the trauma that it caused him.

Also, we always get angriest with the people who loves us the most. Joon Hyung can get angry at his aunt because he knows that she will still love him no matter what. He doesn't have the same security with his mom, but now he does not need her approval, and she's no longer worth getting angry over.

That's really true, in fact I remember so vividly when I was rude to my high school teacher once, she shot back that 'I am not your family. I don't need to take this kind of sh*t from you'.

The only people in your life whom you can easily lose your temper at are the ones who you know will welcome you back into their arms at the end of the day.

Part of Joon Hyung's trauma was the stress that stemmed from his abandonment issues. He always saw himself as an outsider, and maybe being such a 'good boy' was his defense mechanism to decrease any chances of his new family 'throwing' him away again. So naturally as he grew up with that mindset, he suppressed his own feelings and did not confront his aunt about the cards because he probably feared (incorrectly) that he would be abandoned again.

Therefore, as painful as it was to see, I am really glad he finally exploded at his aunt and let out all those pent up feelings. Because at that very moment, Joon Hyung has subconsciously affirmed his place in that house; that he belongs there, and no matter what happens, he is able to return to the arms of his family.

And Bok Joo finalized that when she forced him to go back home that night, saying that which mother in the world didn't have instances where she gets disappointed in her son? All he has to do is to go back and hug her tight.

Because that is the definition of true unconditional love.

Gosh what am I gonna do without this drama??
Nam joo hyuk nailed this role..he delivered joon hyung emotions so well I was just speecI have loved him since school but his emotional acting was really very bad at that time..I'm so happy and proud??.. now I want him to try different characters than warm, bubbly and sweet in some supporting roles before taking on serious complicated lead..I'll patiently wait for him till then. I hope he will continue to grow as an actor?

OMG!!!! First of all, thanks for the recap. This episode had me bawling like a baby and to think there were no life and death conflict, that's really saying something. I am SO happy that they are finally making Bok Joo the rock in Joon Hyung's life, and how they crammed it all up in one super solid episode. We get to see Bok Joo risking herself to get into trouble (by abandoning the interview mid way), search for him, cry for him, worry for him, calming him down, being the super supportive girlfriend that she is. Gahhh!!! I was wondering how the writers would make it balanced between them since Joon Hyung have done so much for her but I feel truly satisfied. I can confidently believe now that Bok Joo loves him just as much as he loves her.

Its truly truly refreshing to see in a kdrama 2 leads who wear their heart on their sleeves!!

An oh boy, Nam Joo Hyuk, you totally nailed that crying scene! I can practically hear my heart crack. Love you to bits! Can't wait for more oof your dramas! And Lee Sung Kyung, that woman has endless talent. Love her too!

Way before this drama began, I was weary of Nam Joo Hyuk's acting. Then he surprised me, impressed me and made me fall for his character in a heartbeat. This episode though, he truly moved me.. I was crying when he had that breakdown in front of his Aunt and Uncle. I cried even more when he opened up to Bok Joo and then I cried some more when he told his Aunt how much he appreciated them as his family.
He genuinely looked distraught and broken.. and it was beautifully portrayed.
Even the scene after he gets out of the pool where he sits with Bok Joo, he just seemed emotionally drained and tired.
I definitely think he is worthy of praise...

1. Birth mother's shoes too tight but the shoes Bokjoo steals for him are a perfect fit. ?She knows him thoroughly.

2. JH breaking down when he sees his mother.

3. His aunt is really the best. And I love that his uncle took a quick peak JH and mom made up.

4. JH and BJ towel scene. Actually all scenes! Throwing finger hearts at her...stealing kisses whenever they can.. BJ micro expressions when he comes out dejected after losing ("no sad face only happy face" mime)

5. "WOMEN CAN WALK MEN HOME TOO." BOKJOO/WRITERNIM, YOU CAN HAVE ALL THE COOKIES IN THE WORLD!!??

6. Coach Choi froze so quickly at the sight of their kissing that she was still in her pose with the smile intact ?

7. Nanhee and Seon ok hi5 when Bokjoo mentions them in the interview??

I might just end up mentioning the entire episode at this rate?

Yes! Thank you for this list! BJ's micro expressions really killed me. So adorable! How cute were the finger hearts??? Seriously, I'd probably throw a show at him in real life but these two idiots are made of sugar, and spice, and everything nice and I will protect their little pure hearts till my dying day...or rathe BJ will do the heavy lifting and I'll cheer her on!
Thanks for pointing out #1, I didn't even think about BJ's stolen shoes fitting him perfectly. Especially when his mom talks about how much she thought of him when buying those shoes yet she still couldn't get him the right size. Whereas, BJ just steals some in a pinch and they fit perfectly.

Also, LOL at NanHee's bejeweled vest! She's so cute and ridiculous.

(LSK fumbles her lines)

NJH: What did you say??

Caption: Mouth is frozen TT

LSK: Let's start from the running. QUICKLY, IF I CATCH YOU YOU'RE DEAD JJH, RUN!!!

Director: RUN! Ok, like that.

Caption: (I'm not going to run...)

LSK: [mumbling about swimming]

Director: Isn't there something with more of an impact than kicking?

NJH: Why do you hit me...

LSK: Yah, go quickly

Caption: 1) BJ's continuous kicking

Director: How about you get hit for a bit and then run away?

Director: You have to avoid it quickly.

Caption: 2) Counterattacks with a whirlwind kick

Director: With a whirlwind kick? Are you practicing?

Caption: In a bit... exactly which adlib will genius JH pick?

Director: Action

Caption: Bokjoo who drags JH to make him exercise

Director: Cut! Oh, it's fun.

LSK: I'm getting the feeling he is making fun of me in reality. x2

LSK: Hurry up and run~

NJH: I'll run if you kiss me

LSK: If I catch you, you're dead!

Director: Cut, ok~

Director: The kiss seems to connect (the scenes) ...

NJH: You're saying to kiss and then run?

LSK: For no good reason kkkk

NJH: Let's break up now~

LSK: If you go and come back, I'll give you one

LSK: Hurry up and run! I love you too

I'm still marveled by how amazingly consistent the show is.

"This show just can’t take a wrong step — it continues to get better, and has never experienced the late-stage slump that so many dramas suffer."

Yep, not a single episode I've ever felt the show lost its magic and the last drama I feel this way was Signal. Shame on the WF ratings though since it deserves at least double digit simply because it's awesome.

I think the only bad point of this show is I will never feel closure of it's ending because how 'slice of life' the show is. I mean I can watch another 100 episodes of Bok Ju and Joon Hyung navigating their athlete career while still maintaining their #goal relationship but that's just a wistful thinking, isn't it?

I know, right? They are doing an awesome job, everything in this show is well thought and worked out: story, acting, sceneries, soundtrack,....I cannot find a weak spot. But the best part is how the overall result overcomes the pure good execution by having heart&soul ? on its own. If we could send our congratulations to the whole team, haha!!
This is what I call slice of life drama done well. :D
I'm going to miss Joong Hyun and Bok Ju a lot, but also Nan Hee, Seon Ok, Shi Ho...they made me care for all of them.

Agree! And if I may add, I love love love the title of each episode. It shows how well thought out a drama is when the title alone is able to encapsulate the whole story.
Moonlight did this last time and it blew me away. To think that both are stories about youths but with such mature writing, acting and directing makes it even more amazing.

I both don't want it to end and yet I also want it to end while it's so good, with the proper wrap-up it deserves. It's a true gem among K-dramas--I'm saying this as a fan who often likes their concepts and premises, yet is too often let down by poor execution. This one was perfectly paced, no idiot plots and unnatural conflicts, with lovable secondary characters that never outshone our main characters, because our main characters are just AWESOME.

The thing about this drama that I truly appreciate is that it was able to present a romance that was both engaging (from an audience perspective) and yet healthy and desirable by real life standards. Because honestly, as swoony and nail-bitingly captivating K-drama romances are, they're mostly for escapism and not actually models to emulate. They're rife with wrist grabs and extended conflicts and obsessive exes and jerks ripe for reformation (don't try this at home!) and everyone is somehow a chaebol or a genius unless you're a useless Candy with special pheromones to attract men who could do so much better than you. Joonhyung (no matter that he's played by Nam Joohyuk and thus has model good looks) feels like a guy you could meet and should want to meet, and yet he's no less attractive than the larger-than-life chaebols and tsunderes. Bokju too, isn't a contrived everygirl (which usually entails being clumsy and way too naive and both sassy and yet also a doormat but always at the wrong times). But she's extremely relatable. And their relationship is both one for K-drama hall of fame, yet also real-life relationship goals. Which proves that good =/= boring!

I'm not ready to let go of Bokju and Joonhyung, but I'm soooooo grateful to have followed their journey to this drama and I'll make all the offerings to the drama gods to have Lee Sungkyung and Nam Joohyuk star opposite each other again because their chemistry was *~*magical*~*. This is the type of drama that lives and dies by actors' chenistry and this one lived, grew up, became a hero and saved the world with SWAAAAAAG.

Man, what an episode. I agree that this show just keeps getting better every week, making me fall in love with every episode. Poor Joon Hyungie, I cried so much seeing him in pain. I'm so glad to see him let go of his birth mother because I just couldn't forgive her for hurting and abandoning her own child.

Although, personally, I didn't like that Bok Joo brought up that "at least he has a mom to blame" while she didn't, I appreciate that she made JH realize that he didn't really need his birth mother anymore because he all along he already has a mother who has even exceeded in providing him everything that his birth mother could ever have given him. Loved the scene where he happily hugged his aunt, my heart was pinched.

Ahhh and wow the way Sung Kyung and Joo Hyuk look at each other's eyes, hug, and hold hands... Their chemistry is one for the books ❤ I was literally crying last night as I listen to the OST because it's ending next week, I'm having some sort of separation anxiety ?

I agree! I understand she's a flawed character and it is a gentle reminder about her loss, but I hated when BJ said that about his mother (and earlier when she said she wished she had a mother to come visit her). She means well and is trying to both comfort him and express her own pain, but I think it trivializes a very serious situation. The response to someone's experience of severe abuse (here in the form of extreme neglect) should never be "oh at least that you have someone to abuse you though."

True, I was a little put off by it initially. But I would like to think that during the scene when she was asking about his meeting with his mother, Bok Joo was not privy to details about his mother not contacting for the past 10 years? I was totally blindsided by this show. When it first aired i just ignored it because i do not really know the leads. But the Christmas break was long enough to give me time to check out other kdrama that was airing because i was becoming antsy waiting for Goblin episodes even though the chemistry of the couple is not that good but GY and LDW made up for it. I was really hooked when i started watching it i could not stop until i watched all the episodes. I am kinda relieved that i started watching when it is nearing its completion. Otherwise, i would have been stalking the sites waiting for each episodes to be aired and recapped. The leads were totally awesome! NJH and LSK have so great a chemistry that they make the audience believe its real. Even though i am already an old lady, this pairing still can make me squee. LOL ..... they are so cute and so natural together. I am going to miss them when this drama ends. I totally understand why the both of them won awards for this show. What i don't understand is why they did not win the couple's award!

What a wonderful episode! The mother coming back only for money for her her sick child living in another country reminds me of a sideplot in a Korean drama. Can't remember which though. I think what Bok Joo means that she can understand from his mum's point of view is to simply comfort Joon Hyung. Since she respects her father so much, she probably grows up prioritising filial piety and it will be against her nature for her to tell Joon Hyung that his mum is a horrible person and he should stop respecting her.

Anyways, I feel that poor Uncle Dae Ho has been Chilbong-ed. :( His treatment of getting a girl of his own is similar to Chilbong, which is getting a girl who is similar to the one he failed to get.

Also, I was anticipating Professor Yoon to say that he looks like Park Bogum when he said he looked like Joon Hyung when he was 20, y'know, just to have some meta comedic effect. Too bad they do so.

Looking forward to the next episode like always but not wanting it to end. Can't imagine my Wed and Thurs without the accompaniment of this cute drama.

I cried so much during this episode. The critical moments where when he put the shoes on ?? and when he was saying "Thank you" to everything his mother did for him. ?? My heart was aching for him. Poor boy was so unfortunate to have a mother like this. Thankfully he has his adoptive family and Bok Ju, if not, I would still be crying for him. So glad that he made the effort to be mature and send his mother off in the airport. You have to let go if you want to heal your wounds.

My favourite thing about this episode was the little hands motif that so perfectly framed Joon Hyung's realtionship with his two mothers.

The moment his birth mother takes his hand as they're walking after dinner with the family, a sense of almost wonderment comes over him. It's an unfamiliar feeling since he didn't grow up with it, but it's warm. But it's also fleeting, and it's almost as if he can't believe it happened once he helps her get into the taxi.

Then when he comes back to apologize to his aunt/mom at the pharmacy, she takes his hands and he stops for a moment to glance over them before he makes a little joke. Those hands are familiar because they raised and loved him all those years and thus, they're also easy to take for granted. Which is why I loved the next beat where he honestly tells his aunt just how much he loves and cares for his adoptive family.

This show is so beautiful in its subtleties, it's just lovely to watch.

I'm very very sad that it's almost over:(

Omo!! You're right about the hands! So many details to pay attention that one gets lost. Now that you say it, think how different both women react after taking JH's hand. He is offering a taxi to his mother and she only leaves giving him her phone number, so he can look for her. However, his aunt immediately feels that his hands are cold and runs to prepare a tea and take care of him. ?

Also, I loved how they are using the shoes as a symbol for love and care. Although the fact that Bok Ju stole the ones that she gave him, I don't know how to interpret that, hahaha!! ? Maybe it is that she will take care of him, no matter if it is in unconventional ways?

I know, I also liked him there, don't understand why people said he was bad, I still remember his eyes full of tears in his lasts encounters with Wang So, I thought he was talented. His character was poorly written and the story a hot mess. For someone that is not well known yet, that can induce viewers to think that it's his fault.
But now I'm glad that he succeeded here, so hopefully we can see more of him. It's impressive how fast he is making progress in his acting career and I have become a hard die fan of this boy already. This is one of the rare shows that has enough material to be longer without losing impact.

It would have been so tempting to get sidetracked on Shi-Ho's decisions around her fading career or Joon-Hyung's birth mother's motivations...Instead, the show stays tight and true to its own main story...the drama in just going out for the first time.

There is nothing tricking in the setting, the girl is not saved by rich society, time does not bend to make her epic love. She did not kill anyone or swap with her doppelganger. Instead, Bok-ju is almost ordinary and her successes (although supported) is about her efforts and the tradeoffs she will make for her dreams.

I am glad that the show is not overflowing with success easily won. Instead, the character arcs explore failure, the end of ones dreams (Shi-Ho), and success that means you have to give up other wins (Bok-ju selection for the national squad).

Thanks LollyPip. your insights guided a loyal and happy group of Bok-ju + Joon-Hyung fans.

Truthfully, I actually think the plan was originally to have more of the secondary characters. However, the writer realized that her leads were where it was at and that's great.

I do want to give a shout out to the writer about the way she handled the gymnast's story line. Unlike most 2nd female leads who stay psycho through most of the drama, the writer had this gal actually get a grip, realize this guy just isn't into me, accept dates from another guy to try and move on and then....move on. It's not much of the drama but it's stuff like this that I actually appreciate.

The brother realizing he might actually love a gal whose been pining for him for 10 years.....not so much.

First time leaving my comments and thoughts here in dramabeans because I can't just control my feelings.

NJH proved that he can act and cry. I was crying with him when he saw his real mom and that single tear when they were at the coffee shop. Ugh! Don't even mention how he tried hard to hide his tears and all the pains he is feeling in front of Bokjoo, deym! That just hits me right in the core.

The pool scene is very beautiful and heartwarming. I thought I will cry the whole episode because of that but Hahahahaha the next scene after the sweet towel scene made me crack. This show never failed to make a "WHAT?!" moment and its very hilarious.

FYI. The quick peck while BJ was ordering JH to run in the field was actually an adlib by both actors. JH shock or surprised reaction was real. In the BTS, Joohyuk added the lines "I'll run if you give me a kiss," and he didn't actually expected Sookyung to ride along, so when Sookyung did give him a kiss his face was all ? and continue acting like a pro.

So proud of the two. Definitely added to my long list of fave actors.

Just want to pop by quickly to say that after this episode, I swore that I would defend Nam Joo Hyuk like crazy if anyone tells me he can't emote.

The excuse or doubt that he's good just because his true character is close to Joon Hyung holds no water. The way Joon Hyung broke down and cried is miles better than most actors I've seen. And this includes actors older, more experienced and more popular then him. Ability to cry real tears and crying with your whole face and body are my litmus tests for bona fide good actors. And NJH passed with flying colors :D

+1 ??

It's the ability to cry without caring how your face look.

I hold the willingness of an actor to do ugly cry as one of the things that shows how serious he/she in acting.
And I'm surprised at how much NJH's willing to let go to cry like that. It shows how serious he is about acting.

Required fields are marked *

Willingness is one thing but ability is another. Often actors try hard but the more they force, the more unnatural it looks.

Those who are great criers are those who can get instantly under the skin of their character and all the emotions come naturally forth. The result is you see a character who either is beyond caring how he looks like to everyone else or he's trying darn hard not to cry but the floodgates just burst open.

His crying was really amazing. Just heartbreaking to watch. That's how real people cry, and yes much better than I've seen from a lot of people.

That's the thing. I couldn't pinpoint the reason why I could not for the life of me enjoy some actors/actresses (both American and Korean) and that's the thing. That awareness of their own facial expressions when they act. Like with some people you can literally see the mental calculations it takes them to make that expression so it's not ugly and it's off-putting.
NJH and LSK are definitely not that :) I love their immersion into their characters.

I kinda feel bad for him after that drama because of all the hate he received from netizen when It's not really his fault that School 2015's ending sucked. And I read somewhere that he did read all the hate comments about his acting in internet. So I'm happy that he choose to improve his acting as opposed to just using his face to make money.

NJH's acting was spot on in ep 15.

Im so glad after the ep, he could shut up majority of the 400+ posts on his supposedly leading role in Bride of the Water God. Also for those saying he has already rejected the role, he hasnt. YG is just being cautious and heres the latest update on it for those who are keen to know http://m.kpopherald.com/view.php?ud=201701051616078828750_2
Im not divulging my sources but role was offered to him quite some time ago and he was apparently the frontrunner for the adaptation all along. Hes considered TVN family and frankly with his good attitude and hardwork, he deserves the shot. LSK has lee jongseok guest for her, he brought Seolhyun, Kim Seulgi and Ji-Soo. Just shows what an all around nice and popular guy he is. Go NJH. Keep defying your naysayers and blow them out of the water. 2017 will be the best year yet for this kid.

I've been hearing so much about this crappy acting in previous roles and honestly, I barely remember him in CitT and never watched him in School 2015 but I don't remember him being so bad in Scarlet Heart to spark the kind of commentary he gets. Which role was he so bad in anyhow?

School 2015. His crying scenes there were pretty stilted and he bombed quite a few emotional scenes. Nonetheless I was still team Yi-an then cos he had a charisma about him. I would have had the biggest crush on him then as well if I was a classmate. He improved in CITT though his role was pretty minor there. I thought he did rather well in MLSH even though i could not stand his co-star. He already started crying beautifully esp in the scenes where she died. This is despite his horrific hairstyles and clothing. He got slammed so hard in all the forums when he got the Baek Ah role as well. Damn those second lead syndrome stalker fans and teen girls. They are so vicious and annoying. The same ones likely who keeps repeating the stale piano joke to condemn SKJ.

I was in tears the whole time watching this episode. I cried when joon hyung argued with his aunt, i cried when he cried to bok joo in the pool, i cried when he hugged and apologised to his aunt in the pharmacy and heck i even cried when he returned his mother's cloth/scarf at the airport. This whole episode just brings up a whirlwind of emotions for me that i cant even explain.

Nam joo hyuk certainly nailed it with this role, and up to now this character will be one of my favorite male characters in dramas. And i personally dont think its because his character is like joon hyung (through observation he seems a little more reserve than joon hyung who is constantly hyper and more extroverted), i sincerely think his facial expressions nailed it and i can feel his emotions through every single words he uttered.

I really wasnt expecting to love this drama so much as i have, as i'm not even familiar with the leada and honestly i'm very picky with korean dramas but this drama has so much depth, sincerity and rawness to it that i cant help but to get in so deep. The last drama that got me crying like this was secret garden and that was years ago! So much life lessons and tenderness, its simply one of my faves from now on. Im so glad my reluctant heart decided to give this drama a go.

I hope they'll get to pair up again in another 5 or 4 years? Their chemistry is off the charts.

It's here! Tears and more tears! I'm just glad that BJ had the chance to show JH how much she loves him. I'm just happy that she was there to push him. Because sometimes when we're feeling down we definitely need people to push us to do things or else nothing will happen. And the Show is just so good in showing different aspects in life that I'm currently facing. That's why, I love this Show! I just can't believe that we only have an episode left. Can't I be greedy and ask for another episode? PUHLEASE!

Now that you have mentioned it, LollyPip, I cannot imagine any other perfect ending than this one. They are entering full-fledged adulthood and a new world and they are scared but know they can find strength in each other. It's bittersweet just like real life.

When Joon Hyung's birth mother opened her wallet, I was hoping she would have his photograph as well but sometimes life sucks. Things might fall into pieces but you pick them up and put them into whatever shape makes sense and get on. And if you have a family and girlfriend who love you to pieces, even better.

Sigh, I feel bereft at the thought of this show ending. It's made me introspect quite a bit, and I feel every character has resonated with me and I have seen myself in most of them. I love Bok Joo and her confidence in her skills and how she has grown - but oddly it's the other characters that have pinched my heart the most.

I have learnt from:

Shi Ho - I have made decisions that I wonder whether was right or wrong (like leaving the sweet guy who looked at me like Joon Hyung looks at Bok Joo), learnt that some decisions cannot be undone but some can - and taking the hard decision to let go to move on.

Jae Yi who just treats everyone nicely and is perfect but has not realised he has not let anyone get too close to anyone.

Dr Go for taking the decision to gracefully stop waiting and being strong enough not to settle for anything else than genuine love.

Coach Choi who has this cute younger guy interested in her but sometimes the heart wants the something else it wants and that's ok.

Coach Yoon who might not be doing well so personally, but that does not affect his sincerity in his professional life.

Samchun who always tries so hard and realised that sometimes efforts are not enough and that if you let it happen, pleasant surprises await you when you least expect it.

Seon Ok who has her own problems at home and is aware of her limitations - but finds the strength to go ahead anyway.

Nanhee who is just sweet and optimistic, and confident in herself.

Bok Joo's dad because he reminded me of my parents whose every action is imbued with that unconditional love.

Joon Hyung because despite being abandoned by his mother and having to learn some life lessons as a child, he still grew up to be sweet, funny and caring. And even when his birth mother behaved badly to him, he was always polite. And for that, his true parents who brought him up are to thank.

I loved this post. It just highlights what a detailed, rich, realistic world this writer has created. So much so that I will literally miss these people, who feel like real people, when the show ends. I will wonder how they're doing and what they're up to before I remember that they're not real. That, for me, is a sign of greatness.

I have been an avid reader of this site for almost 3 years now,, ever since I stumbled upon kdramas.. and through all that time there have been numerous times I wanted to spill into the forum whatever welled up on the inside while watching some stuff..
couldn't help it today. I wasn't into NJH or LSK(even though I found her uniquely watchable in cheese in the trap).. but the first time I saw the trailer for WFkBJ, I was sold. thats all it took .
The thing is, theres a way to do 'light' and 'fluff' and still make it feel grounded , so it can tap the emotions very naturally. This drama did that so easily!
The two actors have acted with such abandon , and without
being self-conscious in front of the camera! What this does is make even the 'over-the-top' a forgivable attribute of the character/situation and the 'gloss', a whimsy of the storyteller.
In fact , this drama makes me actually feel like the storyteller is not one, but is a composite, even when the story is so simple. But I guess, simplicity can only emerge from a composite. like life. no wonder it feels like a 'slice-of-life' drama.
I loved the characters, all of them, and their relationships.
and I loved the actors.
I have never been a big fan of 'Cute' (like shopping king louie).. too glossy and unnatural. too restrained and filtered. But here , is what changed my perception. I could forgive the gloss cause it never interfered with the characters or the story. They didn't seem to be aware of it at all. They still looked young, and unembellished, and green, impatient and regular middle class kids , who didn't always smile unnecessary but threw tantrums, were insecure and basked in the loyalty of friends and family.
Who truly came to understand themselves a little better towards the end, but still are essentially the kids we began with.
This is what makes the chemistry in this drama work!

And , god NJH and LSK! She had me when she tells him ,like in a daze, about her depression, and virtually ASKS for help. I had cried then, and this episode. NJH , like someone
mentioned above, the almost reflex action of his hand going to his neck in a futile effort to control his tears, his confusion, and his shock at finding his mother right in front of him after so many years...
and the swimming pool scene..
I love this couple. and I love the show. And really want to thank you guys for your lovely recaps .. I have enjoyed so much on this site its a crime I 'm sure.

oh.. and about fluff and gloss.. its how they make the tropes feel even more conspicuous and situations more contrived.
Cases in point: LOTBS, and Goblin. Although Goblin I can still forgive in parts(I gave up cause I couldn't digest the romance of the OTP.. I could understand his attraction (and its immediacy) to her in all terms theoretical and philosophical, but they reduced it to regular romance too soon.
and LOTBS- just a pretty show.. I couldn't get past episode 2. Its the case when they are aware of how pretty they are in every frame every second. lol.. and had thought I should give them a chance after I couldnt get past episode 2 of YFAS.

But yeh, why I mention these two- cause they are ratings juggernauts and have the none of the feels this simple underrated show generates without any fanfare-
Emotions that surprise as they emerge and dissipate, not wait for a drumroll or to be in-quotes .

I think you just answered the question I've always had in mind as to why I could never really watch YFAS. I only saw bits n pieces and that's it. I just couldn't quite put my finger on what turned me off. Lobster was slightly more bearable but you are right. There's always that moment when they'd zoom in to the OTP's faces as if to emphasize their beauty.

I 100% agree. I'm watching LOTBS and goblin too, but WF has my attention more. And I LOVE looking at Gong Yoo and Lee Min Ho( my gateways into dramas), but WF is an unexpected gift that will stay on my mind for a long time. And who doesn't like young love/emotion? We've all experienced it!

I hope the cast and crew aren't disappointed in their work because of the ratings (everything is about ratings). I hope they are proud of their work because, at least in the int'l realm, their work is heavily appreciated. I wish there was some way we could let the cast and crew know what a fantastic job they are all doing. Sigh....oh SK...you picked a cliche drama over something so refreshing and well written.

@ninand Oh and you explained perfectly something that I keep trying to put my finger on when I watch this round current dramas.

For me, Bok Ju is more superior than Goblin and LOBS and today I know why, you're right, the latter two rely heavily on gimmicky scenes but struggle to deliver 'sincerity'.

I guess that's why I always read people whose fan of those drama keep trying to explain/make sense of the love story because it takes an effort to understand. Is it the writing? Acting? Maybe both.

But in WF, everything is so effortless. We're simply just sit and watch how every (important) characters come to live and then laugh and cry with them.

It is both, isn't it. and the sensitivity.. like when Joon Hyung erupts in front of his adoptive mother, and perviously in front of his hyung..
It came from deep inside.
The need to hurl those words so they would hurt, so he could hurt right back. It comes from pining to give something back.

What is easy is to 'give', but they must 'receive', and that is what makes giving so difficult. This is what had plagued joon hung for so long. That he could only receive , but could never give them anything, so he thought.
The equation has to be balanced for there to be an equilibrium.
A giver should learn to receive with just as much joy as a receiver should learn to give.
And so,even if all this was achieved by merely bringing all the facts to the front, NJH 's tantrum , as much as it was heart breaking, was essential as well.

You know, its a strange thing- this is just a regular , light romantic show.. but since it stays true to itself and doesn't pretend or aspire to be something its not, it gets under the skin easier. Life's best philosophies are the simplest ones.

I agree. It's about having heart and this drama and Shopping King Louie both have heart as the foundation of the drama. It sounds easy, but the mixture of writing and acting has to gel for it to work.

I totally agree about NJH "growing as an actor before our eyes." All of his microexpressions and movements, while very Joon-hyung, reallllllly show how much he can interpret and play out a character's emotions now. I'm beginning to understand why he's being scouted for other roles: from what I'm seeing, I really, truly think that he has the potential to play increasingly complex characters in the future.

Awesome episode. Awesome acting. Awesome kimbokjoo. I like that bokjoo is still bokjoo in her own way of being joonhyung's rock.
Usually you get a flashback of the guy doing all the things for you being there for you n u realise you like him. In bokjoo's case she already like him, they arevalready an irem but the flashbaxk at the moment tells her how important he had really become to her.
Comforting someone isnt putting tgem in a bubble. I love that bokjoo's concern and worry came hand in hand with her temper and the right to be angry when he went incommunicado. It was awesome she told him pointedly that those who have more complain more, from someone grewing up without a mom, couldnt have said it simpler. And suddenly the whold thing shifts perspective. Theres no need to weight and compare his biological mum's love with his and with his sister. A reminder too of how awesome his adoptive mum is. The airport scene was one of my favorite. He could hold on to his anger and disappointment but a guaranteed regret if he left things that way with his biological mother. Most of all i cant help screaming when he said im yours and will follow whatever bokjoo said. Sounds cheesy but thst rolled off naturally out of jeon joon hyung. Just as bokjoo said before and his mom oso said sweet boy with even sweeter mouth.
This is the best episode yet. Joon hyung and his mom's makeup scene, joon hyung and bokjoo swimming pool scene. Joon hyung bokjoo backhug scene. Joon hyung and biological mum airport scene. Joon hyung showing her his girlfriend picture. Bokjoo joonhyung bus scene. Bokjoo cheering joonhyung at competition and her aegyo smile in makin her smile after he clocked in second. Bokjoo and joonhyung voiceover conversation as the episode ends. Almost like an inexhaustible list of how awesome this episode.
Theres also short meaningful moments like him squeezing his feet to wear sneakers a size too small. Bokjoo stealing sneakers for him. Joonhyung saying hes ok to shave bald for bokjoo. Joonhyung counting down the hours til she leaves.
Sigh although im looking forward to ep 16, i feel really sad bokjoo and joonhyung's stoty is coming to a close.

You know the writers hit the nail right in the head regarding joonhyung's embarassment to face his adoptive parents. He knew hes wrong. But somtimes apologizing to those closest to you especially your parents is so hard. Bokjoo is even more correct that he cant procastinate, leaving it till tomorrow is gonna make it even harder. A good tight hug would do the trick. Sincere words and warm action. Thats really what it takes to mend the bridge with your loved ones

Thanks for the recap LollyPip!

This episode was one of the best episodes of any drama I have seen, let alone for this series. It really silenced my doubts as to how they would provide resolution for Joon Hyung's woes related to his mother. I also hope that it silenced many of Nam Joo Hyuk's critics. The guy was on point this entire episode. On freaking point!

I could really write an essay on this episode alone, but I'm determined to keep it brief. This episode was very true to life in so many ways. It was also replete with symbolism that made the story that much easier to tell and appreciate. We learned that Joon Hyung's mother is awesome for giving birth to an even more awesome individual, and that's it. I don't know how she thought she could marry her financial mission for her daughter with her reunion with the son she abandoned so many years ago with nary a consideration on the impact it would have on him. This was a smart move on the showrunner's and writer's part though. Instead of having him go look for her, it is much easier to tie things up this way.

The show continued to mirror real life with the msgs that BJ left for JH, her laying down the truth on him with things he might not want to hear, and the fight that JH had with his family and the fallout and actions therefrom. I was so happy that the show didn't make JH win that swimming competition. I like that there will be a bit of separation and hopeful continued growth because of it with our two leads. The reaction by both BJ and JH at the end of the competition was awesome--BJ's smile and JH's disappointment, loved it! Quick side note, as a swimmer it really bugged me how poor some of the swimmers' techniques were throughout the show. There was a lot of improvement in this regard in this episode that made it feel that these are actually competitive swimmers.

As aforementioned, the symbolism in this episode was really well done. The pool, the shoes, money, and the handkerchief just to name a few. I loved that he was able to let go of the handkerchief and his mother in the process.

The last thing I would say is that this episode reminded me how funny life is in that it is easy to give advice on something you are not struggling with at that point in time. The tables were reversed and BJ turned into the sagacious fountain of wisdom.

Really last, last thing. Is it me or does NJH's body look totally and completely on point in this episode. I thought he was a twig, but damn!
