Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching
by DB Staff
We’re winding down with a number of shows these days, which means we’ll soon be greeted with an influx of new titles. (The cycle, it never ends, it just goes on and on and onnnnn….) Are you glad to be sending off the ending shows, or sad to say goodbye? Or maybe one of those helps with the other — it’s the dramaland circle of life. –javabeans

Hwarang: I know I should have more to say about this show and its cute story and its amusingly warring flower boys and its sweet budding romance… but mostly, I’m distracted by everybody’s strong, perfect eyebrows (they’re so bold!). That, and that recurring OST song that gives me My Girl flashbacks every episode.
Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim: The conflict between Dong-joo and Teacher Kim was nicely played, because I was right there with Dong-joo in wanting so badly to be angry with Teacher Kim and yet finding it impossible to commit to that feeling, knowing that rationally he couldn’t blame him for his father’s death. And despite the fact that Dong-joo has been at times selfish and immature, I find his growth trajectory really satisfying, seeing how far he’s come since the beginning.
Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju: A sweet ending to a sweet show, which I don’t think misstepped at any point — that isn’t to say it was perfect, necessarily, but it was consistent and true to itself the whole way through, and I found it delightful to the last. The cast really captured the feeling of being young and unsure and full of hope, and made me wish I would have handled youthful dilemmas with as much warmth and maturity. Not that I’d go back and relive that for anything, though!
Father, I’ll Take Care of You: I was so gratified when Sung-joon finally took a clear, hard stance with Psycho Mi-joo, because while I appreciate that he’s a nice guy caught in a difficult situation, it frustrated me that he’d been passive for so long and let her twist her hopes into actual delusions of coercing him to marrying her. (Side note: How trippy is it to think she was once the sweet-faced Soon-yi we desperately wanted Gaksital to save from a comfort woman’s fate?) I’m hoping this paves the way for more openness and sweet exchanges with Dong-hee, now that he’s quit and no longer beholden to Mi-joo. Meanwhile, I still find Kim Jae-won a little absurdly out of place with his dark revenge, but I’m warming to his loveline with Lee Soo-kyung and looking forward to his plan to use her backfiring on his heart.

Hwarang: Something happened around last week or so—I went from always reaching for Romantic Doctor first on Mondays and Tuesdays, to reaching for Hwarang first. There’s just something light and refreshing about this show that doesn’t take itself too seriously, but still delivers an earnest coming-of-age story with all of the satisfying beats and none of the frustrating ones. Now that the reluctant roommates are starting to form their core group (sneaking out together is totally the first step to BFF-hood!) AND the romance is going places, I find myself looking forward to this show every week.
Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim: I’m disappointed that this hospital turned out to be relatively normal, and that the overall narrative concerning hospital politics was pretty standard stuff too. But I still do love this show’s execution in making the daily workings of the hospital very dramatic, and I’ve become so invested in the characters that every tiny bit of personal development feels like a momentous achievement. Which is maybe a result of starting off the show with such flawed people that now we’re like He apologized! For a thing he did wrong! Look at how he’s grown!
Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju: What a perfect little ode to youth Weightlifting Fairy was. It felt very much like a personal love letter from the writer to her younger self, and I appreciated so much that Bok-ju was such an attainable ideal for a real girl in the real world—someone who didn’t necessarily fit the mold, who felt awkward in her own skin at times, but was brave enough to figure out life on her own terms and love herself for who she was, in spite of her insecurities. To see a heroine like that succeed in life and be loved so completely for being nothing but herself is the definition of a feel-good healing drama.

Legend of the Blue Sea: I left this drama for a while because I couldn’t carry on after Jo Jung-seok the Merman died. However, javabeans and girlfriday’s recaps depicting the playful banter between Heo Joon-jae and Chung drew me back. Normally, these are exactly the types of rom-com scenes I squeal over, from cuteness overload. Overall, I think Jeon Ji-hyun and Lee Min-ho are giving respectably good performances, and I enjoy their interactions together. There’s just 1% missing in their chemistry that’s keeping me from falling fully head-over-heels in love with their relationship. Also, I am so glad that Wednesday’s episode happened – because before this week, I thought that sweet naive Chung’s actions were usually reactions to Joon-jae and the people around her. But by using her mermaid gifts to take away Sung Dong-il’s memories, she now seems like an active participant in shaping her own destiny.
Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju: I’m going to miss Bok-ju and Joon-young’s sincere truthful relationship. We almost never get this level of raw honesty between couples in Dramaland. Even the whole jealousy arc in the finale concluded with a great apology from Bok-ju. If only more characters in k-dramas could be this genuine, half the makjangs would be solved in the first episode. Please get married, and then go on Na PD’s Newlywed Diary. If that happens, I promise I’ll watch every episode, pinky swear.
Laurel Tree Tailors: Le sigh~ I know their relationship is supposed to be a bit unbalanced, but Tae-yang could definitely make some more effort! They sort of remind me of this old drama starring Jang Na-ra and Ryu Shi-won, called Wedding. Like Tae-yang, Ryu Shi-won played a poor, but upstanding goodie two-shoes, and the bubbly princess Jang Na-ra, like Hyo-won, became enamored of him at first sight. One of the most satisfying arcs of that drama was when Ryu Shi-won learned to compromise his stubborn pride and rigid principles which were initially causing hurt, by not accepting the heartfelt actions of those around him, including Jang Na-ra and her parents.
However, in Laurel Tree Tailors, it seems like Tae-yang is doing all the taking (emotionally) without compromising any of his goals or his pride. Even though she never seemed too invested in the company, Hyo-won quit her job for him, she accepted his past (with her future sister-in-law) without a word of complaint, and she’s always the first one to make declarations of love or ask for physical affection. At the beginning, I could understand Tae-yang because he didn’t like her yet. Now that they’ve officially started dating, I feel like something should have changed, but it hasn’t!! Hyo-won still dangles after Tae-yang like a puppy, and he just accepts her love like an absent-minded master. 🙁
Hwarang: So I wasn’t a huge fan of Park Hyung-sik (especially after High Society) before this drama, but now every time he’s on screen, I get excited. Maybe it’s his character, or maybe it’s him. I don’t know, but there’s something quite appealing about the hidden king. (Side note: I can’t wait until he’s the main lead in Strong Woman Do Bong-soon so he can finally get the girl.) The other storyline that I’ve been enjoying is the start of the Romeo-Juliet romance between Ban-ryu and Su-ho’s sister. When she grabbed his bottom by mistake, I will admit guffaws that were loud enough to be heard on the neighborhood streets, came from my room.
HappilyEverAfter
Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju: This drama is basically the fluffiest, lightest, sweetest piece of cotton candy in existence. Bok-ju was just so adorable – from her tendency to waddle, to her pouty-faces, to her awkward attempts to get her crush to notice her… she was just so relatable that you couldn’t help but want the best for her. Joon-hyung, on the other hand, is the perfect boyfriend that everyone wants – I don’t even know how many times I squealed just watching him interact with Bok-ju. They had a very ordinary relationship, but the spot-on combination of humor, friendship, and romance made this an unforgettable drama.

I'm also going to miss Weightlifting Fairy so much! I love how it was on every person's list! It was such a feel-good drama to watch and I think it ended so perfectly. We even got a kiss in the final scene! I've said it in another thread, but I'm so glad that the drama showed that receiving therapy isn't a bad thing at all either, but rather, they showed how helpful and normal it is. They definitely need to be the two leads in a drama together sometime in the future!

WLFKBJ definitely hits all the sweet spots for me. Glad that the small community here appreciated this Show as much as I did. Realistic and lovely in every aspect. Hope to more shows like this in the future but this show has set the bar way too high.
NJH and LSK's chemistry was just goals!

WFKBJ is love! I still won't call the show fluff because even though it was cute there was a lot more to it which was realistic and hard hitting. I specially loved their last message to all youth. Completely Swag! I hope we get to see more such shows and more college based shows please, high school is too mainstream now.

I know right!?
I mean if i think for the moment on the characters journey so far - it feels they came so far. I can't believe these were the same characters we met in beginning. They are still themselves but with a whole lot of growing up done.
For Bok-Ju, to being not interested in guys to having her first crush, from being immature on things she did to her first heartbreak, to her depression, to getting out of her funk, to falling in love for real - she has indeed come so far!!. <3
For JY - to having start trauma, to feeling abandoned, to internalizing his family issues, to speaking out to his brother, to have a fight, to confront his fear, to falling in love, to be heartbrokena and abandoned all over again, to dealing it maturely this time around and to best himself in swimming every single day! More love! <3
More than the love story, our babies grew up into amazing people and that's where this drama become special. Their diabetes inducing love story is the delicious icing on the cake!!!!

Thankfully I still have 3 dramas to continue that I've put on hold for WLF. it'll get my mind off the fact that WLF is over but I'll never get over what a wonderful drama it was from beginning to end. Youthful, sweet and heartfelt right to the finale. I'm going to miss you Bok Joo Nyung !

And same like GF, I just couldn't wait for Monday so that I can have my weekly dose of Hwarang.
"Side note: I can’t wait until he’s the main lead in Strong Woman Do Bong-soon so he can finally get the girl."
But this statement really break my heart. The possibility of Sam Maek Jong not getting the girl really make me sad. Can't we just go a bit of Moon Lovers' way where the second lead still get the chance to romance the girl or going CITT?
At this juncture, this is the element that made me hoping how I wished that this drama isn't pre-produced. There is something magnetic about Park Hyung Sik's presence and performance in Hwarang that I am dying to have more scenes of him. Sure Sun Woo is the perfect guy for Aro but PHS made Sam Maek Jong so endearing and his stronger chemistry with Go Ara that made me jumping on their ship and for the first time ever, suffering Second Lead Syndrome.

Different strokes for different folks, my dear.
Surely Sun Woo appeals more in real life situation but I am viewing Sam Maek Jong totally as a drama viewer, engrossing myself in the drama itself. I guess the different ways that we perceived the character of Sam Maek Jong is because of our different style of drama watching and experience.
Like someone pointed out to me in the recap discussion, it's the stronger chemistry between Park Hyung Sik and Go Ara that made a lot shipping the two. Putting aside the constraint over the fauxcest, she and Park Seo Joon does not seem to exude the same kind of blazing chemistry which make the loveline rather bland. And helping a lot of Sam Maek Jong characterization is the wonderful performance of Hyung Sik. Aside that his character as the faceless king is far more intriguing than the rest of the boys, he has that subtle charm which is why I am willing to board that ship even when I know it will eventually sink.

I'm wondering how I didn't find Park Hyung-sik until seeing him in Hwarang! He's so pretty that it's not fair that he's multi-talented, too. Dang. But still, I'm liking this show more than I expected. So yay for that!

I've been captivated by him since he played younger Seon Woo in Nine. Instead of rooting for the main couple, I was rooting for younger and older Seon Woo. Haha... Then Sirius, WHWMF and the real deal (for me) is High Society. He and Im Jiyeon stole the spotlight from Sung Joon and Uee. He has that childish but manly aura in him which is so attractive. Especially when he laughs, he looks cute and adorable like a kid yet in the same time makes heart flutters like any adult does.

Na PD is doing a show about newlyweds??? ?
What where when. And how did I miss that news!
As for dramas - I was so down after WF ended. It was such a constant safe place for me all these last 8 weeks! I didn't know but I really needed a drama like this and dramaland gave me that. Thank you, show! *sniffs*
Goblin - It was a heartbreaking episode at all fronts from the reaper realizing he has been loved all along to Run Take sobbing her heart out at end! Amazing acting and directing. I know many find the slow meandering pace to be annoying at times but it works for me. Every time I check the timebar on how much time left and get sad if it's close to end. And the music, after so long I feel a soundtrack not just matching upto the drama but elevating it while not being distracting. Can't believe its ending next week! :(
Hwarang - I really need to start this! Am approaching a drama void and that's scary !

Gah. You're my drama alter ego.
It's been a long time since I've enjoyed a drama as much as I've enjoyed Goblin. But I don't think the pacing is slow at all. Each contemplative segment speaks volumes about the characters' inner dilemmas and/or not-yet-fully-revealed elements of the plot. You just need to keep track of all the loose narrative ends to see how they're using it. I normally can't stand the blank staring into space that drama characters do. This is so very different.
I'll be so sad when it's over.

Yes, I usually dislike the long silent looks that stretch more than necessary.
But for some reason, this drama works for me. Because I feel each characters are so rich and those contemplative moments tell a lot.
I do agree, some episodes have stretched them way too much ( the ppl of the ski resort is one example).
On other hand, every contemplative scene in last episode worked wonders. And directing is a main contributing factor.

I finally found the time to marathon Age of Youth (curently at Ep 8) and I just wanna join in on all the chorus of love for it!
I laugh, I cry and I squeeee so much (Jong Yeol is adorable!) it really is a gem. Easily in my top 5. It's one of those great ones where you keep re-watching memorable scenes and where the feels and the tears don't stop even when the episode is long over.. Ahh why are there only 12 eps?!

Age of youth is such a gem! Am so glad I waited to marathon it, I literally finished it in one sitting.
I was seeing myself and friends in every character and as each of the girls battled their ghosts, I was right there reliving my life. Even though our lives are not as dramatic as the drama, the characters were so real that it didn't matter.

I know! I love that the drama is quite realistic in portraying life. Was pleasantly shocked how so direct it is, there's not much subtlety but rather an in-your-face kind of telling how it is. Very refreshing.
I love how the girls are so different but they've got each others backs. They may fight and literally pull each others hair but will be there for every heartbreak or triumph.
I want my own Jong Yeol too. Or a Jae Hwan will do. Lol

So glad to see Father i'll take care of you here!! I was also relieved and happy when Sung Joon resigned from his job though given that this is a long drama I am concerned about what will happen moving forward... I feel like Mi Joo's character is just so unlikeable and I want her to stop and step back!!
Really hoping for Sung Joon and Dong Hui to just have a long conversation to talk through what's been going on and their feelings and goals. We get snippets of that but is it too much to ask for more? I'm also looking forward to their characters hopefully being even more in the forefront particularly with the lost brother story. There are bits and pieces of this drama that I really enjoy watching and hoping that it continues!

Weightlifting: I know this is a sweet simple coming of age story, but I realized as I watched how rarely we get to the end of a drama with the story still functioning on full cylinders. It was a well though out, well paced drama and it took me a while to realize that ...basically what I'm not saying that well is the writer made this look easy but so many dramas crash and burn or make me suspend reality about human nature, common sense etc. Good job to writer/actors/crew.
Goblin: I stalled at 9 but hear that the story FINALLY is revving up so need to jump back in.
Father,I'll Take Care of You: Started for the main couple romance, sticking around for the swapped cousins....that Romeo and Juliet scene. Ha! Also, surprisingly liking creepy guy romance as well now that the actress has calmed down.
General and I: I actually forgive the drama condensing the first part of the story because this is actually hard to adapt with the battles and military strategy. However, the "epic" love that we are supposed to get is a bit hard with AngelaBaby so I think they should have used over voice so the viewers can hear what she can't emote (and she is playing a very enigmatic character to be fair). I'm usually not a big fan of that device but it was needed here. Oh, and the way the production is filming this is horrible. It is highly romantic but dealing with war so I think they should have gone grittier and some of the scenes are now so cheesy and the slow motion....don't get me started. I don't judge on some of the production issues like they are not riding real horses quite often, and it's obvious because that's about $$, but the PD makes Moon Lovers PD seem like Spielberg. Ugg the slow motion All The Time as in cue the romance....cue the Big Dramatic Scene. But Wallace Chung plus me being a sucker for romance and there is actually a foundation for the story now so I'm in.
Boss & Me: Don't know what it is about Chinese dramas suddenly, but just in the mood for a lighthearted rom/com so heard good things about this one. Ended up disappointed in Love 020 about mid-way through so hope this holds up.
Romantic Dr: I dropped this at episode 4 but have put it back on my pending list maybe for a summer watch. I don't care about the ratings but to have so many happy with the story...well all the yelling turned me off. I think maybe too many doctor dramas last year. I'll give it another go when I have a dry spell.

I burst into guffaws @ the comment about Hwarang eyebrows.
I can just imagine the Hwarang boys (and Ah-Ro) starting their mornings with a bit of good ol' brow pencil to make them look nice. Or a little bit of Anastia Dipbrow brow pomade, because that's what will really survive through swordfights, blood, random vomiting and funny dance practices. (I personally attest to this stuff surviving 45 degree Celsius weather :P)

Watching this week:
Goblin: Everything happened in this one eps. And just like usual, I love those goryeo bits.
Hwarang: Looking back at it, this drama only consisted of good enough parts. Good enough writing, directing, acting, and editing. But somehow, put together, it's magically great and addictive.
Solomon's Perjury: The more they tried to find out the truth, the more secret and lie they unearthed. I'm afraid thinking about what actually awaiting them in the core of this tragedy.
Potato Star: This sitcom is the kind that attached itself to you ever so slowly. I can't believe there are only 10 eps left. Hopefully there is happy ending left in store for everyone.

I just can't bring myself to continue Meremaid... when I ocasionally come back and watch a bit, it is surprisingly mainly for Lee Min Ho and his comedy (his sauna water terror was priceless) and that girl from Five Kids...
... still watching Golden Pouch...
... and started a Chinese drama "General and I"...

I should get caught up on Kim Bok-ju. I was surprised when my cousin asked to borrow my Viki account so that he could get caught up on the episodes. He even watched the interview videos. Well, I never saw him to be the type to be into fluffy kdramas. Especially for someone who doesn't watch much television. Anyways, loved LSK portrayal of her.
Quite a few dramas coming up in the coming weeks. I'm excited!

Puberty Medley - Adolescence Medley - Medley of Youth
Amazing start of the year with this 4 episode drama. Gave 9 out of 10.
Reduced score of Misaeng from 9 to 8.5.
Watching right now - Flower Boy Next Door - Its good one. Especially monologues of Park Shin Hye.
Father I'll Take Care of You - Cousins and 2nd couple are doing the job now. Hae Sook and Chang Soo's romo act was funny. 1st Couple story has stalled and Mi Joo is given unnecessary screentime.

This is so weird to me because I thought everyone preferred Park Hyung Sik and Lim Ji Yeon's storyline over Sung Joon and Uee's in High Society.
I, too, am anticipating Strong Woman Do Bong Soon. Park Bo Young and Park Hyung Sik make a lovely couple. Better luck next time, Ji Soo.
I am so invested in Ban Ryu and Soo Yeon's relationship. Look at his smile! She is the only joy in his cold, hard life.

So because of lack of time these days I've been reading recaps and watched just the parts I thought I HAD to watch, and how much I've watched of each drama really helps me figure out where they stand for me.
Hwarang - As girlfriday, lately I've started watching this before RDTK, and I actually watched the entire episodes. That might be because recaps are not up yet when I feel like watching it or because well, it's an easy watch. Sageuks don't really make it for me but this one is more of a youth drama in sageuk clothing, and it has Hyungsik as well so it has me hooked (also can't wait for his drama with PBY!!). The moment Banryu's ass was grabbed he became 1000 times more likeable. I have to study about Silla for my exams and imagining our 6 guys there makes it much more entertaining.
Romantic Doctor - I read the recaps until one point that convinced me to play the episode as well: Dongjoo's angry outburst. I knew I had to see that. I love how he said that now that he's a doctor he understands, but that makes him even angrier. Love love love Also now the nurse in Jealousy Incarnate has a competitor for best dramaland nurse in Nurse Oh. She's amazing.
LOTBS - I mostly watch just Lee Minho's parts which is shocking, as I've never been a huge fan of his. But somehow he's the one carrying this show for me. I'm not very invested in it but since I started it..might as well finish it.
Weightlifting Fairy - I actually haven't watched the last two episodes. It's not that I don't like it. On the contrary, I can't accept that it's ending! I don't want to part with it yet so i'm holding onto them
Goblin - I watched the first two episodes of Goblin when they aired and I really really want to continue it because my classmates love it, and I love Lee Dongwook and it looks like a good story but.. for me Goblin is one of those sweet guys everyone is encouraging you to date but you just don't feel it.
We got married as a job - I'm studying Japanese and I thought watching some jdramas would be good, so I started this one and I'm in love. This drama might just have my favourite female lead of all time. And the male lead is so relatable and awkward I just want to give him a big hug (but I guess that won't work unless it's Wednesday). Anyone know any similar jdramas?

In order of enjoyment this week:
Nirvana in Fire: I finished it, and am spoiled for life! Admittedly, it took me a while to get into it, but after episode 21 (that birthday party) I couldn’t stop watching. I decided to trust the writer and let the story take me wherever it wanted. Each episode managed to go from ‘wow, good guys triumph!’ to ‘oh noes, the bad guys are too smart!’, to ‘good guys managed to turn that around!’, and thus it goes on. I now see why this drama was such a phenomenal success. The casting. The costumes. The cinematography. The acting. It has everything. Also, the most lovable water buffalo ever.
Hwarang: I am going to love the friendships among the boys. I already like Ah Ro. In a story that is mainly about boys and men, the only female characters are: the Queen, and the two girls. It’s nice to see they are strong characters with agency in spite of their limited roles in society.
Goblin: This show has been like a long, beautiful, walk on a misty morning… holding a bag of spring onions. Until episode 13. Wow, everything came crashing down! I don’t know what will happen with three more episodes to go, so I guess I’ll stick around to watch it.
Legend of the Blue Sea: It’s an enjoyable watch, even though from the start I wasn’t too keen on Heo Joon-Jae’s family drama. I sense that Angst has arrived in full force. Please, I hope the bad guys don’t intend to display the mermaid for money. I cried every time I watched Free Willy as a kid. Big non-pearl tears.

I found a blog that did recaps, and that really helped me keep track of what was happening and who was who.
Honestly, I dropped the drama once at episode 4, then forced myself to get to episode 12 before Christmas. Then dropped it again. I picked it up in the New Year after reading so many good reviews, but it wasn't until episode 21 that I was completely hooked. From then on it was a blast. So, advice in one word: patience.
If you like a drama where plot is the most important thing, this is a drama for you. You can trust the writer. Every detail is important, sooner or later. Romance is secondary. If you are into the themes of justice and loyalty, and good vs evil, this is the drama for you. Oh, and bromance abounds.

Nirvana In Fire was my first C period drama and to date, I haven't watched another. It spoiled me thoroughly and sadly I can't find anything close to its quality.

Agreed. I'm so glad I persevered. Other Cdramas I've watched are Princess Wei Young and Prince of Lan Ling. I really enjoyed them as an addictive straightforward story with a compelling romance. Nirvana in Fire was a drama that told many intertwined stories. The definition of epic.
By the way, the money spent on costumes in Nirvana must have been astronomical, but it was so worth it!

Legend of the Blue Sea: The puzzle pieces are falling together and Evil Stepmom had a totally new meaning given how much KJH/KSH has done!!! I hope Chung and JJ will get their happy ending and change the course of this past fate. I have faith in this writer. I also want to see Mom living together with them and maybe Yoona and Fashionista can all be neighbours or hang out together. ND will reveal his true colours soon and I'm curious if/how he will John forces with CH though I actually want CH to be redeemed.
Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo: The sweetest main couple ever! ❤️ Definitely gonna miss this show, which made every week feel so good for me when watching these friends navigate life and falling in love. JH and BJ will be great characters to remember for a long, long time. Can I keep JH in my pocket? XD Swag! *complete with head and arm move*
Hwarang: Glad to see the bromance and romance developing. BR and SY's first official encounter was hilarious. I want SW to be the first one to figure out JD is king. I hope the conflict between SW and AR won't get dragged out too much. I want to know more about AJG and the queen regent's back story.
Iljimae: Watching this on the side whenever I have some time cuz I wanna see more LJG and catch up on some past works. =) Up to ep. 6 now. KYJ and YJG were so young and cute back then. ^^
Miss In Kiss T-drama: LOL at how the guy still pretends that have zero interest in the girl but obviously cares very much about her. From acting out of jealousy to teasing her to taking a falling table for her, I'm just waiting for that moment when he finally admits that he likes her.

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo For a long time, I've never felt so satisfied with a drama's ending. This show just got better and better from the word go and never meander or went off the tangent.
I was so worried about being let down in the finale because it just happens too often in dramas. The preview for the finale didn't help, I was afraid that there would be some last minute misunderstanding that would take half an episode to resolve and then everything would be rushed towards the finish.
I should have trusted the show more because that misunderstanding was dealt with swiftly in WF's style. That it ensued in the most hilarious jealous fit and confrontation between Bok Joo and Joon Hyung was SWAG! I badly need a gif of Nam Joo Hyuk's face when he changed his 'glare' to a smile in two secs. ADORBS!

That's one of my fave scenes in the finale! NJH's micro expressions are too priceless. I'm rewatching the series to experience the buzz all over again, as well as to discover what i might have missed of JH's antics. There's too many, especially in Episode 9. Watching them drive to the sea is even better the second time around. Like when he had to ask BJ a second time to choose between him and seagulls.

tineybeanie. I was thinking the same thing about Legend and what keeps coming to mind is that LMH needs to learn hand acting. As-in learn how to be more handsey with his female co-stars. When having physical contact his hands are so limp it makes it seem like he doesn't really want to be touching her. The only exceptions in Legend we're the most convincing scenes. Like in the one recent scene where they were in bed snuggling. He grabbed her tight and that simple action made his attraction convincing. The other was when they were chasing each other around the house. He let his guard down and wasn't backing off contact.
Maybe someone needs to volunteer to spend time with him and teach him this valuable acting skill? Yunno, someone willing to nobly sacrifice her time for the greater good of drama watchers everywhere. ?

I also find myself watching an episode of Hwarang first before Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim because Hwarang is like a delicious light appetizer before the stunning and exquisite main meal. For me, Hwarang is a sublime oyster bisque with a hearts of palm salad and RDTK is like the finest filet mignon with truffled potatoes and new asparagus, companied by my favorited red wine of whatever day it is! These two shows together are perfection. What's for desert? Of course scene reruns of Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo...the way he looked at her during the fireworks. Gah!!

I'm a little worried that it actually made my expectations super high for OTPs and friendships of future shows! But that just shows how significant it is.
I'll definitely rewatch it when I feel down or when I just need some cute stuff. But for now? As we part with the series I just wanna say one thing: This show is full of

Wonderful friendships

i can't wait for some new shows. *only* watching goblin, legend of the blue sea, and father i'll take care of you (i got really busy, so could only skim after episode 4, but planning to catch up since it took me awhile to figure out what was going on this week).
i only started father because of lee tae-hwan, but i was always a bit annoyed with the way the mi-joo situation was handled. lee tae-hwan is a cutie, but speaking objectively his acting is still a bit stiff/green, so i couldn't tell if he really had feelings for her but was holding back because she was his boss's daughter, or if he just didn't know how to extricate himself from the situation. the actress is pretty frustrating, but i could never blame her character for acting the way she did given how waffly sung-joon had been with her. he never really did anything to brush her off, which could totally be read as encouragement, but he never really let her in either. this is a mostly writing/partially acting flaw.
ironically, i thought he performed better in his earlier projects like high school king of savvy and pride and prejudice. he probably had the most to do in pride and prejudice, a show i loved. it was come back mister where i really took notice of him though—so tall! so stern looking!
still enjoying goblin- i love the whole tone of the show, the longing-ness of it. i do see classic kim eun-sook elements popping up now and then, like the heroine having her super perky moments, and pops of silliness here and there, but they aren't as grating as they have been in some of her shows.
legend of the blue sea- it's more fun for me now that the villains are out in full force. i'm still holding out hope that what happened this week actually didn't happen.
i'm in the mood for a signal-ish show. something moderately dark and thriller-ish. i remember signal aired around this time last year and it was the highlight of my drama life for its run...

Side Note: I was kinda surprised, PHS captured my attention on High Society. I finished off that drama for his storyline. I hope he'll show a different kind chaebol in his new drama with PBY.
WFKBJ: girlfriday summed it up for me, it was an ode to youth. I started watching it with any expectation and ended up loving it.
