Happy New Year to all of u soon!!!
Been a little obsessed with the male actors from Solomon's Perjury (I am alr familiar with most of the female ones). I was amazed to know that Jang Dong Yoon (Ji Hoon in SP) has helped stopped a robbery before in real life. He was even awarded with a commendation. Plus his acting is sth I see improving over the years. What's there to not like?
Also, Seo Young Joo (So Woo) acted in Moebius when he was just 15 years old. Pretty surprised at that choice, i must admit. He is someone I see having a lot of potential as well and of course, hope that all of the young ones in SP progress well in their career!
P.S. I must say Im sad that SP's ep 5 and 6 arent airing this wk. WHY WHY WHYYYYYY

also Moonlight Drawn by Clouds and W-two words have a good soundtrack

I never really paid attention to the Goblin's OST. No song really jumped out to me or I guess I haven't really watched enough. Will give it a listen though. There are a couple songs that I'm liking from WFKBJ. I would second MDbC.

Ah Goblin...I'm loving the Goblin ost Sam Kim's "Who Are You". So haunting. And gosh the singer is young.
Outside of drama OST, I like the stuff put out by the k indie band Standing Egg! Found them through Dramabeans, when they posted the song "rest" in one of the Scent of a Woman recap. That said, SE has an ost for Weightlifting Fairy!

These are on repeat for me right now! Some are older, but all released in 2016 (I think).
Doesn't hurt that their music videos are like little dramas.

My personal favorite tracks for 2016 are as follows:
"Dreaming"
By: Han Hee Jung
from "Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo" OST

"Can You Hear My Heart"
By: Epik High featuring Lee Hi
from "Moonlovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo" OST

Hi, Moonlight Drawn By Clouds has wonderful OSTs by singers like Gummy, Beige and Baek Ji Young. My favourite is by my fave singer, Hwang Chi Yeul. Here he is, singing "Because I Miss You" at the KBS Gayo - in collaboration with a dance solo by Mina of TWICE.

This is exactly what I do.
Been catching up on Romantic Doctor Kim and have been marathon-ing it for the past few days. Now I get where the hype is, deep down RDK is a makjang (without the cheap execution and with solid actors/actreeses). It's not THE best show but it's quite addictive. Somehow it reminds me a bit of western show? I don't mind this goes on and on as long as they keep churning out interesting patient issues and keep the romance going. The later is a bit slow-burn but I like the young leads' characters and acting chops enough to keep watching.

I saw pictures of Nam Joo Hyuk and Lee Sung Kyung at the MBC Award.
I couldn't tell in the Kim Bok Joo because she is always so intentionally frumpy, but man, she is STILL so slim. She is still a super model!
And this is her AFTER the weight gain? Her "after" weight gain is skinnier than my "before" weight loss. Super envious.
And also I found out she is 1989? I couldn't tell she was not a 90's girls (even though I knew she's older than NJH), as she looked so young and "college" in Kim Bok Joo!
I cant believe I like her so much as Kim Bok Joo, as I am one of those who couldn't STAND her over-the-topness in Cheese (albeit it was said that that was required by the character, etc.). <3

Happy Friday Beanies! Last Friday of 2016!
I know I promised (yes @neener I remember!) to have the list of recommendations for a trip to South Korea up before the new year, but it morphed from a table to a list and then this horribly long post which took me really really long!
But in order not to start the new year by breaking a promise, I finally have it up!! The first part. Haha. This is the list of things to do in Seoul- as recommended by the Beanies here ?
The rest of the recommendations outside of Seoul will be up next. Soon. I hope. Haha.
I have pictures (not mine but I've credited them in the post), interesting links, the name of the recommender and also of course what to do there.
If you want a concise list (in table form ?), drop me a comment in my blog with your email add and I'll send it to you.
Finally I'm watching Signal and enjoying it very much! Just trying to avoid any spoilers at all cost! (At Episode 5 now). Yes yes I also don't know why I took so long to start. And lastly- Goblin day is almost upon us! Can't wait!
Thank you all Beanies for making 2016 a really memorable year for me and here's to 2017 being even better! ?

Moonlight did use a garden. It was shown in Episode 2, I believe. That was film in The Garden of Morning Calm.
But the garden where they kissed was filmed in a studio.
I like the list. I am going to South Korea in May, so this is something I can use. Thanks.
I would add the following though:
Ewha Women's University
Bamdokkaebi Night Market for foodies

Ewha is for cheap shopping and a walk in that beautiful campus. The shopping caters to college students though. It is close enough to Hongdae, that you can do Ewha first, then Hongdae second on same day.
Bamdokkaebi Night Market is a weekend event at different places. They have lots of food trucks, shopping for smaller items/accessories. The one I want to go to is at Yeouido Park. The only con about it is the loooooong lines to get food.

Wow, that's only part 1?!?!? You'll need to stay in Korea for 3 months at that rate!
My plan for my next visit to Korea is much simpler:
1. Find Kender.
2. Follow her around until I meet all the pretty people that I see on my computer screen. Act like an annoying fangirl half my age.
3. Go home.
Although I don't know how much the Husband and Boy would enjoy that. Happy New Year!

It seems a lot more than it is, because the locations are pretty close to each other (some are next to each other).
@Michykdrama: If you visit Namsan Tower, make sure to go at a time and day when there will be one of the traditionell Martial Arts performances. It's worth it! It doesn't cost anything. It takes place on the place between tower and beacons a couple of times a week (or once a week? I'm not quite sure anymore. You will find the flyers that show the performing times at the entrances of the palaces). Your son will like love it! (At least my three year old son loves it).
Skip the Kimchi museum, eat a lot of Kimchi in the restaurants instead...
Personally I liked the changing of guards ceremony at Changdeok palace better than the one at Gyeongbuk palace.
If it is somehow possible (perhaps persuade your husband to stay with your child and just go alone...) visit Chongdong theatre! It shows a kind of "traditionell Musical", which is called Miso. Miso is more or less made for tourists and is a worldless adaption of a folk tale (when I was there it was "Chunghyang-jeon", But I think this year it was Baebijang-jeon) that introduces the viewer to a variety of traditional music arts.

Oh another thing: Next to Lotte World there is a small lake. There is a walking way around the lake. When you come from the subway station and follow that walking way it passes a pavillion. Every sunday from noon till early afternoon there are free music performances there (no K-pop though; everything else from trot till traditionell drums).
The cable car at Namsan doesn't get up the whole way. There are still a few steep stairs to go. Pack lightly in case you have to carry your child up.

Wow, michykdrama, that was a lot of work! Whew, and that's just north of the river. I thought of a few more things while you're up there that would be "omg, I've seen that in a dozen dramas!" spots. One you can just observe when you're facing Great King Sejong's statue, on the left across the street is the Sejong Performing Arts Center. You'll recognize those wide concrete steps and buildings. South and on the other side of the street is the old Seoul City Hall and now the super-modern new glass structure added in front of it. Then in opposite directions are buildings you've seen used a jillion times, interiors and exteriors: the old Seoul Station which is now a museum/gallery (to the West), and to the East, the very new Dongdaemun Design Plaza, the big silver curvy building (I think it made its drama debut in MLFAS). It's next to the famous Dongdaemun Market which we've seen a lot of too (that 2nd lead girl shopped there in Cinderella 4 Knights) but that's an overwhelming sensory experience that I'd want two days to devote to alone!
Wow, that got long ?

Hi beanies, and a happy New Year to everyone! (over the weekend, but still).
Still bitten by the Rogue One bug here, I'm hoping to make it to a fourth viewing this week (little difficult since the only show in town is at 10 p.m.....), it's just SO GOOD. And it also fully revived my love of Diego Luna, which means I've spent the last week tracking down and rewatching virtually anything starring him - I have a particular soft corner for Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights which basically turned me into a giggly, swooning 19-year-old (the age I was when I first watched it) again. Meanwhile, 2016 continues to be awful and snatch away beloved public figures - I was really sad to hear Carrie Fisher had died, followed within a day by her mother, Debbie Reynolds :(
On the drama front, I won't be checking back in until the end of January when the Hong Gil-dong drama with Yoon Kyun-sang and Chae Soo-bin comes out. I hope that does well for their sakes. And the proposed Go Ah-sung drama too.

I saw Rogue One for the second time earlier this week because there was nothing else good showing at the time. It's a good movie to be sure, but you must really love it to be on the fourth go around. It is sad that Carrie Fisher passed away. I heard that she finished filming all her scenes before her passing, so the next movie could be a good tribute to her and her character.

I caught Rouge One a few days back and then saw the news about Carrie Fisher's passing... Before that, was George Michael and after, CF's very own mother. What a way to end 2016.
On a lighter note, Rouge One was the bomb dot com. My favourites were Donnie Yen and Jiang Wen's characters. That ip man + jedi like moves. No words. I loved how the movie's cast was diverse in terms of culture and talent! Seeing Felicity Jones reminded me of the BBC adaptation of Northanger Abbey.

I nearly lost my mind back in April when the first teaser came out and I realised Diego freakin' Luna was in it. Like, DIEGO LUNA in a STAR WARS movie!
I love that R1 has a diverse cast, and it's so clear that they weren't just chosen to fill in someone's social justice boxes - it's just that Disney opened up the field and chose some of the most talented actors out there.

Thanks for Dramabeans and the community, we all make good memories being together here in 2016, I hope 2017 could be a better year,
song of the year for drama
Urban Zakapa-I don't love you
This song really touch me is because you can have many interpretations of the song,
the lyric is simple and they repeat "I don't love you" multiple times that it can be the song about the breakup
or about leaving someone and lied to yourself,
this could be taken as simple as getting the love disappear or as complex as leaving someone because of something unspeakable,
I loved the original, the duet song festival, the girl spirit and all have their own interpretation of the story,
but all sounds so sincere,
You can use this song in all of the drama available and the lyrics will match,

I like the way they sing it and when you listen to it a lot,
you have your own meaning of the song,
that the singer probably didn't mean the words they said but want to break up anyway,
It really something cause I like it even more the more I heard it ,
I think Yoo Seung Ho has a very big hunch in song since he starred in "You From the Same Time" by Naul on 2015 and that song also really big

This Week My Wife Will Have an Affair uses that song and boy is it ever the right song for the complexity of the situation depicted in the drama. UZ also did an OST for that drama and it's another good one.

Thumbs up to Nigeru wa Haji da ga Yaku ni Tatsu, Fuben na Benriya and Love that Makes You Cry – they were all wonderful. Well written, perfectly cast and acted and poignant. I don't want to pick a favourite among these three, they were different genres and wonderful, incomparable in their own ways.
I was also quite fond of the low-budget Koe Koi.
Didn't find Juhan Shuttai particularly captivating myself (very serial & predictable), though it seems others did. Hmmm.
There's still a whole bunch of J-dramas I need to finish, either because I got busy or because they (sadly) remain partially subbed only. Love Song (need to finish), Suizokukan Girl and Jimi ni Sugoi! among them.

I think Jhuhan Shuttai is definitely good but if you don't really into manga or like the manga-making, it can be hard,
It's like how people who like Shirobako (anime about making anime) have a hard time find the funny side of Gekkan Shojo Nozaki kun (anime about making shojo manga),
I think it kinda like that

Very often when I am watching japanese dramas, I think how nice it would be to have a jdrama version of a dramabeans blogging site (not called dramabeans necessarily but with similar concepts of comprehensive recapping, audience comments, drama ratings, etc). And your comment Sancheezy ressurected that though again.
I am not Japanese and do not want to risk appropriating Japanese culture /it's products by heading such a site (and this is coming from someone whose own culture &/ cultural elements are very often appropriated by others who are "well-meaning"). If you all know of a site like dramabeans that already exists for Japanese dramas, please do let me know. And if you start one, please let the jdrama followers on this site know - we will support you and our hearts will rejoice. ?

You can check out Dorama World, it has updates on J-ent news and dramas and the occasional review. Just no recaps on a full-scale basis because it's run by only one person, but the coverage is impressive nevertheless.

I second Dorama World and psycho-drama.
It just that DoramaWorld is kind of New Bites section in dramabeans with short info on new dorama, casting, or j-ent news.
And psycho-drama is more to jmovie and most article are more suitable for someone whose familiar with jdorama or jmovie. But it has very deep review on jmovie and can give you lot of recommendation on good jmovie.
Aside from that, some blog that I can recommend:
- koalasplayground, she sometimes cover japanese, taiwan, and chinese too, entertainment news and even lastest gossip. She'll do recaps for drama she like sometimes (korean, japan, taiwan . . . I don't remember have she ever do c-drama recap). Beware that comment section can be fierce and less civil than in db, but it's fun to read it sometimes.
- dramajjang. They do recap, sometimes just drama review, for kdrama and jdorama. There are 3 writers so don't expect to find as many recaps as in db.

You might want to check out ザラ ZARA Notes (http://film-enthusiast.blogspot.com). It's a blog that reviews Asian dramas, but mostly Japanese dramas. It has a short overview of what the drama is about and a few screenshots, though you may want to avoid the review section as it may contain spoilers at times. I like going to the review section of my favorite dramas because she usually notes some interesting dialogues or narration. Actually, lately she has a separate quotes page for some dramas.

Happy New Year, Beanies! I started watching Coffee Prince and really want to talk about it, so here goes my first open thread post. :) I know CP is one of the seminal, OG dramas and I’m about a decade too late, but I recently began Goblin and discovered my ultimate ajusshi crush, Gong Yoo. <3 Some beanies then kindly recommended CP and here I am, 12 eps in.
Aspects I like so far:
1. The writing - The characters act and react in such realistic, sincere ways. I’d usually get annoyed with Eun-chan and Han-kyul constantly pushing away and pulling at each other, but their actions feel true to their insecurities over self-image and sexuality. I love their soul-baring honesty about hurt, betrayal and cowardice after EC’s gender reveal.
2. EC & HK’s chemistry - Omg their first kiss is so hot, I love that EC went in for another one then hugged HK and he enveloped her in his huge shoulders, squeeee! Their scenes are charged with such romantic tension, I love it.
3. Fave scenes - At the beach when HK lies beside EC and touches her with such love and fear; When EC’s on the bus leaving the art exhibition and removes her wig while crying over her insecurities. YEH’s emotive acting is so heartfelt & raw.
4. Gong Yoo :D - His portrayal of a conflicted man fighting his feelings, then putting aside his misgivings to embrace love, is affecting and nuanced. It’s funny watching Goblin and A Man & a Woman and noticing how GY has evolved. I’d thought Shin was as sweet, petty, and handsome as heroes could come, but he doesn’t have quite the same shiny appeal now I’ve discovered HK. :)
Some small things:
1. The clothes and colour palette don’t hold up.
2. I appreciate that Han-sung is kind and YJ is independent and doesn’t treat EC as a love rival. Apart from that, I don’t really care for their storyline.
These questions are probs oft-repeated, but how did you first come across CP and what hooked you? Who’s your ultimate actor/actress crush or discovery of 2016?

Ooh! CP was highly recommended when I first started watching Kdramas, and I like gender benders in general. I loved CP because it seemed so different than others, there was a poignancy, slice-of-life Ness and that gorgeous indie soundtrack.
My ultimate crush of 2016 is the Park Bo Gum & Kim Yoo Jung pairing of Moonlight. They are so cute and beautiful and seem like theyre really in love. Their chemistry is amazing.

I came across Coffee Prince because it was on Netflix. I read a book and the author mentioned in her bio that she was a fan of Korean dramas, so I found Boys Over Flowers on Netflix- it didn't interest me, the fashion was too dated. Then I tried Coffee Prince on Netflix. It was okay, but I wasn't feeling it; I didn't understand the setup of first male lead and second male lead back then. I looked it up online and found dramabeans recaps. Dramabeans helped me navigate this new world, and I've been hooked since.

I really enjoyed Coffee Prince, but for me, it was the story of a deeply-closeted gay man discovering a way to live with himself by finding a girl who dressed like a boy. In that light, it was really sad, because he would never be truly happy with himself.
Also, the background characters were hi-larious.

I couldn't agree more. I haven't watched Coffee Prince yet but now that I'm watching Goblin and so in love with Gong Yoo, I've been digging up his films and dramas and started watching them. He is quite a versatile actor and quite goodlooking at that. He is very carefree with his actions in each scene and is not self-conscious if he does not appear cute or handsome, which in his case makes him more attractive. And his voice, such rich tone, I could listen to it the whole day.

Jin Se Yeon as one of the nominess for Daesang? i dont know if im
so impressed or shocked. lmao.
But yeah MBC might not as competitve as SBS or KBS, and not many drama achieved high rating. Among the list of Daesang, i wish Kim So Yeon will win. Her drama was not a really a good and popular one, but she was flawless in her role.
anyway thanks for your info. :)

Me too. I’m surprised that she is among the list of Daesang nominees as I work on the list. My friend told me that she wasn’t find FiP appealing due to the female lead but I’m not sure whether it was due to her performance or her characterization in that drama.
Maybe because FiP passed the 20% mark so they might guess she is popular enough to gain vote from voters. By the way, the daesang winner was determined via SNS votes if I’m not mistaken.
Maybe Kim So Yeon had a better chance in winning if it isn't based on SNS votes. Anyway, it is still a good year for her as she had won MBC's Top Excellence Award and a Daesang from KDA.
You’re welcome and Happy new year!

ohhh SNS votes no wonder, im not sure sometimes i heard for the Daesang 50% votes and 50% jury. so not sure. Im not sure last year but on 2014, it was based on votes. I know that for Best Couple Award is best on votes but not sure other categories.
Jin Se Yeon as among the Daesang Nominees is really joke of the year. This year is probably the best year for Kim So Yeon, she won number of awards, and also got handsome boyfriend Lee Sang Woo. :)

Same here. I love everything about Goblin: the cast, the cinematography, the OST and of course the plot. However, the unfolding of the storyline is a little slow moving. When Eun Tak could hold the sword, I literally fist pumped and did a victory war cry. Finally! Like finally we had progress after having her admit she saw the sword as well.
With regards to Sunny, I'm hoping they give us more than merely having cute scenes with Grim Reaper. Yoo In Na can do so much more. I have yet to watch epi 9 but I'm crossing my fingers that we get more unfolding and Sunny!

Hello my Beanie Friends! I recently came across a thread on Reddit for Kdrama referring to the 7 First Kisses web series, and asking who would you like your first 7 Kdrama kisses to be from.
Since there's no better way to round off the year than with cute oppa and noonas, I would love to ask you as well-
Who would your lucky 7? :D Feel free to define the role and characters as you please! I would love to hear from you all.
Here is my list. I picked 2 actors because there's too many crushes that I have.
1. The Sageuk Rebel/Anti-hero - Broody, angsty mane-of-gloried men who challenge your beliefs in life and love- LEE JUN KI & KWAK DONG YEON
2. Sexy older CEO-nim who makes me want to tear off my clothes - They're smart, ruthless and have a maturity and passion that comes with age, just like Fine Wine- JOO JIN MO & JI JIN HEE
3. Badass female action star, who beats all the men- She's strong, bold and awesome, if I can't be her, I want to be with her- One and only HA JI WON:D
4. Pretty Puppy madly in love with you- This boy has one heart and one goal in life, and it's you- NAM JOO HYUK & GONG MYUNG
5. The Dark Criminal/Spy with a Tortured past- He's two-faced, suffered through cruel fates, is dangerous and deadly, but begins to turn a new leaf for you. - SONG JOON KI & YOO AH IN
6. The Royal/Noble who would give up the world for you- I must admit, I have a huge thing for sageuks and the whole I will sacrifice it all for you bit. This man will break all rules of society, and will stake his life, name and kingdom for your love. - PARK BO GUM & JI CHANG WOOK
7. The Tsundere Chaebol- He wants nothing to do with you, and wants everything to do with you. He's hot and he's cold, he's yes or he's no, he's in or he's out? it's all very confusing. - JI SOO & HA SUK JIN
Special Mention:
The true love triangle/threesome? - When the Bromance is so sizzling, that you don't know whether they're in love with each other or you, but you kiss them both anyway and maybe hope they kiss each other too :P- GONG YOO & LEE DONG WOOK. (and maaaaybe in second place, JO JUNG SUK & GO KYUNG PYO).

Ooh, this is fun! Do they have to be classic K-drama roles?
1. The earnest office worker--he tries hard, doesn't always think he's succeeded, but always makes your heart flutter without even trying: Kim Soo Hyujn
2. The military man--loyal to his country and his people, swoony in a uniform, sexy even under duress: Lee Joon Gi.
3. Mysterious neighbor--there's something more to him, but you can't tell what. At turns mischievous and funny, at times serious and melancholy--but always considerate: Lee Jong Suk
4. The nice Chaebol--the rare Kdrama black flamingo (they're more exotic than a mere sheep), this man is wealthy, powerful... and not a jerk: Lee Je Hoon.
5. The younger man--his smile and energy make you alive again, but his grown up take on things makes you reflect on your own maturity: Park Bo Gum
6. The Saeguk Traveler--A blast from the past, this man is indeed a Joseon warrior deposited into your 2017 living room: Ji Hyun-Woo
7. The mythology man--Alien, Gumiho, Vampire or Ghost--that's yet to be determined, but this fantastical man probably comes with co-habitation hijinks and a wicked sense of humor: Namgoong Min
Btw these are all roles I really want these people to play, too. ^^

Ooooh! Thanks for playing! Haha, your list has so many desirable guys! Also, how do you format for bold text here? :P
Love your list- here's a couple of thoughts!
- Kim Soo Hyun is adorable! If you have watched the Producers, this office worker role is pretty close!
- Ooh, LJK is fantastic in action/army roles. But I always prefer him in manes of glory haha.
- LJS as a mystery neighbour! But ooh, what do you think his secret could be?
- I laughed out loud at your description of The Nice Chaebol, Black Flamingo hahahahah. Or is it Black Swan? :P
- I would love to see PBG in a noona romanc e melodrama. Although Lee Jong Suk and Park Seo Joon are already experts in the genre, PBG could give them a run for their money.
- Queen InHyun's man! I remember being so impressed with his character then haha, thinking how smart & brainy his character was, and used his wits more than his fists!
- Ooh, I don't know if NGM has ever done such a fantastical role, but it would be amazing to see him in one!

I haven't seen the producers, but I might check it out if it was good.
LJS' mystery... I think it should involve a really tragic past--but not one that killed off his family (so they can still be in the drama). Maybe he was in the army and his unit was all killed, and they hushed it up? Or we make it a historical drama and set just after the Japanese occupation, and he was either forced into complying or witnessed something terrible? Or something entirely different, like someone has kidnapped his best friend and he's working to get them back in secret?
Lol I guess black swan would work too, but it still doesn't have the exotic, head turning factor. Nice Chaebols are just that special.
What mythical man would you like to see NGM play?

Producers is pretty nice, but opinions are strongly divided on it. It's kind of slow-paced, long episodes, but Kim Soo Hyun totally amazes in this show.
The army man part sounds so cool, as does the Japanese occupation bit. Or what if he was like Dexter, killing evil people? Or a superhero hiding his strength?
I think NGM would look super hot as a vampire. :D Basically I want to see him in guy liner. ?
cozybooks
December 30, 2016 at 2:26 PM
I could see him in guyliner, but only if he gets a character like Shin Se-gi from KMHM. As a vampire. Or maybe he's a boyband member who died and came back as a ghost to haunt the fangirl he blames for his death?

who would you like your first 7 Kdrama kisses to be from.
Wow, that's a tough one, considering I'm old enough to be most of their Mamas (for the purposes of this query, let's assume that I'm no older than, say 27. :cough:) But never one to let reality interfere w/a good fantasy, I'd have to say:
1. The Sweet Guy - he's always there for you, and never pushes past your boundaries because he respects you. See also: Kim Ji-Hoon as Oh Jin-rak from Flower Boy Next Door
2. The Dangerous Guy. He's as likely to kill you as kiss you, but boy, does he make your heart pound loud enough to drown out your better judgment. See also: Kwon Hyun-sang as "L" from Vampire Prosecutor 2
3. The Come-Here-Let-Mama-Make-It-All-Better Guy. You know in your heart that this is a herculean project, but he's so pretty and so damaged that you must scoop him up in your arms and soothe his wounded soul. See also: Lee Joon-gi as Wang So in Scarlet Heart. (Ok, really, in any of his roles. He has a type.)
4. Smart is Sexy. He's a genius-whatever, and if you've got a question, he knows the answer - but he acknowledges your talents & intelligence as well. See also: Joo Sang-Wook as Yeo Ji-Hoon from Special Affairs Team Ten.
5. Tough Guy with a Heart of Gold. He may growl and bark, but underneath, he is a huge softy that just wants to do good. See also: Ma Dong-Seok as the teacher from Shut Up! Flower Boy Band.
6. Funny Guy. Completely infuriating, but always makes you laugh - and has the most infectious grin ever, even when he's doing something insufferably stupid. See also: Yeon Woo-jin as Gong Gi-Tae in Marriage, not Dating.
7. The Bad Guy. You know he's gonna break your heart, and also, he's kind of an ass, but you just can't help yourself. See also: Lee Min-ki as Joo Byung-hee from Shut Up! Flower Boy Band, Hong Jong-hyun as Wang Yo from Scarlet Heart

Happy New Year, everyone! I hope you all have a wonderful year ahead!
My friend safinesque and I were debating yesterday who we would choose among the Kdrama male leads, if given a choice of one only. Our first (and only, so far) round was between Lee Young of MDBC or Joon Hyung of WFKBJ. It turned out to be a full character analysis of both male leads—from what drove them, their flaws and best attributes that make them swoon-worthy and relatable. We ended up on Team Lee Young, but still love Joon Hyung, even if we haven’t seen his cunning yet since he hasn’t faced decisions as tough as the Crown Prince’s. It was a funny debate and reasoning process, but I kind of missed that from school days when we would dissect characters from novels or plays. This time, we applied the same process to our favorite drama leads (I think our Literature teacher would be proud, haha)! Amused us no end, and made us wonder if you guys do these too? (We’ll do female leads next, I suppose.)

I was just thinking about dissecting these two characters since I'm in love with both. I have no one to talk too in RL so ended up debating inside my head. Conclusion is that both guys lived in different timelines and situations so I cannot for the life of me choose between the two.

At least we got our happy ending for them! And JH, you sweet boy, just teasing KBJ forever, I could just watch them be fluffy together.

Question:
When do you stop coming to OT?
For me, sometimes it's Monday or Tuesday. Other times I'm still on by Thursday.
Other note @bbstl and Kaybee, thank you so much for answering my question last week. All the roommate tips makes me feel much more confident about going into this situation.
Media this week
Korean:
ML - next ep 11 Ahhhhh!!!
7 eps in a week isn't a lot. But I don't do marathons well so this is basically addiction. And now I'm over here doing research into Taejo. no comments on him please
Gogh, Starry Night - done. Loved it - 1 bean!
Lobster - on ep 13, I can't believe I still haven't finished considering I started Wed at 4%
MioH - done. Liked it. Not worth its bean. I appreciate seeing my WC boys. Planning to rewatch WC next week.
Choco Bank - done. Worth its bean
7 First Kisses - next ep 8. I'd choose Kai or Hae Jin based on the endings.
WF - next ep 8 I love this drama so much. Idk if I'll finish before Saturday night. But I'm in love with our OTP, Sweeeeaaag, WHAT!!!
Signal - next ep 3 *on pause*
FantasiC - on ep 9. I'm only a bit interested in the ending but I'm in this for Jisoo and Park Si Yeon. Some Joo Sang Wook & Kim Tae Hoon
Japanese:
Good Morning Call - on ep 5 my cohabitation loving heart can't take it!
Glass lip - next ep 3
Taiwanese:
Miss in Kiss - next ep 3
Western:
Fuller House - next 8
Reading:
How to Love - next ep 60
Salty Studio - ep 21
A Match for Mary Bennet - done.
So happy! Mary met the perfect man. He was for her and swore off marriage upon learning she wasn't inclined to marry.
He was offering friendship to replace the pure union he desired. So cute!
Still haven't decided about watching another follow up story.
Music:
Elvis
Avril Lavigne - listening to her albums in order gives me such nostalgia
P.S. marathoning past 2016 dramas is strange because I'm used to going in and out with so many shows until I finish. This list is smaller than I expected for my time off school. Though I am working too.

Hey Purple Owl, I've often wondered about how long people come to OT as well because I'm always late on Fridays (like now, and you probably won't even see this). I don't come back any later than Sunday, figuring that no one else will either. Also, I make the assumption that by then if someone has something "fresh" to say, they will find a way to work it into one of the newer threads like Ratings or What We're Watching.
Gosh, the power of Jane Austen. Someone's written a book about Mary Bennet, how about that? I hardly know what to think, she's spent so long stuck in place as the butt of jokes in my mind. I'm glad for her.

So this is the Last thread of 2016 then its better to list out a all the ingging Japanese media that will Broadcast or Air in 2017.
Live-Action Movies based on manga. Many of them have their own anime too.
Action, Drama --> Gintama and The full Alchemist
Romance is a must
Haru Chika - HaruChika: Haruta to Chika wa Seishun suru - Anime
Kyou no Kira Kun - Today's Kira Kun
Hirunaka no Ryuusei - MAMURA is my favourite.
Peach Girl - manga to anime to dorama to Live action movie
Itazura na Kiss ~ Campus Hen ~
Saki - YAAAY - 4 episodes drama already aired in 2016
Kizudarake no Akuma
Issukan Friends aka One Week Friends - YAAAY
P to JK aka P and JK -
3 gatsu no Lion aka Sangatsu no Lion aka March Comes in like a Lion - In 2 Parts-
MUST Read Must watch. The most underrated manga among the foreign audience. Selling 500k+ copies of each and every volume within their 1st week of release. Always topping Oricon rankings. It has more emotional moments. Not the typical romance stuff
Few other manga based Live-Action movies will be released but here i have mentioned most of the Slice of Life and Romance Stuff.

Jut got news that HYOUKA will be released in 2017 too.
2017 surely is manga to live-adaption year.
Kimi to 100 Kaime no Koi
Itazura na Kiss The Movie: Propose - That's why i was watching 2 different trailers.
I always wanted to ask this question
Let's say you are CEO of a production company or a producer or investor who investin TV media Or You are a Director -
Will you Hire any Idol as actor in your show or movie? Its a given that Idol can't act at all but surely is popular among masses
I will do. I will use that Idol as an advertisement. Even if there is no space for Idol in the story, i will give him/her some role to appease and attract fans aka followers.
TV media is an entertainment business and Ratings usually equates with profits and goodwill. So, I am gonna target profit without much hesitation. This is pretty common rule in the industry.

And Gintama! I mean, Oguri, Okada, Suda, and off course Gintoki!
As for dorama, I'm anticipating Quartet.
Somehow I miss watching something funny from Eita . . . .

Happy Friday, everyone! And happy 2017! Here's to many good dramas to come.
Legend of the Blue Sea: Why are they so cute together? And the past so tragic?!I love this show while I'm watching, but I never miss it while I'm gone.
Goblin: Lol my friend started watching this one: "there's a lot of blood." I guess I've forgotten how much Kdramas don't shy away from blood (which a lot of western tv does, imo). She also said it felt like a mixup of MLFAS and Let's Fight Ghost to her. Which seemed odd at first, but the more I think about it the more it makes sense.
Hwarang: This show, man. I dunno--it's pretty, it's silly, it's oddly epic. Our leading lady is beginning to test my "every actress gets a chance" nerves. I guess we'll see where it lands?
Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim: I know a lot of people wonder why this one is so popular, out of everything--but in addition to appealing to a wide range of audiences, I can see it for the quality of drama it is. Camerawork, writing, acting, all seem pretty on target (and our OTP is so cute when they're not angst-buckets).
Seven First Kisses: Lee Jong Suk!! Hehe that was a good episode. Did 8 get delayed for the awards? And it will have 10 episodes altogether, yeah?
Bad Guys: So I started this late Christmas Eve and finished it yesterday. I think it's a... pretty well done show, if not too realistic (catch criminals in exchange for sentence reduction?). And after a while, watching our trio face down a crowd of baddies got a bit "been here, seen this". But each of their stories was moving, so I loved that. Park Hae-Jin was awesome, and the hitman was just so tragic. I don't think I'm as excited about a season 2, though.
And so now I'm wondering what to watch nex--oh wait. Or I can just rewatch Love Me If You Dare. ^^ I'm looking forward to watching the awards ceremonies--that's what all these delays are for the shows, right?
Have a happy New Year! I'll probably watch K-dramas until it strikes 12. ^^

hi jojo!
Sorry for not replying your last week comment. It's been a busy weeks for me.
Glad you like Galileo. After that try Bijo ka Yajuu for another cute Fukuyama.
Another detective dorama (this for @captainamerica too):
- Meitantei no Okite, funny and hillarious! Matsuda Shota in a detective dorama about mocking detective dorama tropes. (It helps if you already familiar with Detective Conan or Kendaichi Case).
- Strawberry Night, Yuko Taekuchi as female cops.
- for Oguri Shun it will be Border. Not detective, but dark cops dorama.
- Mr. Brain with Takuya Kimura in a special unit formed to solve case using new technology.
- Lady Saigo no Hanzai Profile. Keiko Kitagawa act as profiler. This better than her other detective dorama Tantei no Tantei.
- Zettai Reido. Ueto Aya in cold case squad. Not many action as they deal mostly with old case documents.
- Voice. Forensic medicine students figuring out the caused of death (none of it is from murder btw) in each episode. Starring Eita and Shinohara Satomi.
- River Edge Ookawabata Tanteisha. Don't expect for murder case, it's more slice of life but a lot adult content. And it's Odagiri Joe! Each eps is only around 30 mins.
- For traditional high school detective dorama, try Meitantei Conan (aka Det. Conan), Kindaichi Case, Q.E.D, or Q Detective School. They are live action adaptation of the manga.
For a side note, japanese detective dorama doesn't deal with romance. Just a little hint of romantic attraction is as far as you can get. Okay, there's some like in Okitegami Kyoko or Hard Nut or Sakura or Trick (last two starred Nakama Yuki), but it just one in a million years moments. Japan doesn't do romance like korean does.

Don't you know that Fujiki ever played detective role too? It's SP drama, Eiko Kyouju no Jikenbo (I hope they will make series version too).
Anyway what do you mean about female lead in their 40? If you refer to dorama about woman in their 40 (and single), you can try Fujiki collection; Over 40, Last Cinderella, and Watashi wa Kekkon Dekinai janakute Shinai Desu.
But if you mean the main character was played by around 40 yo actress, here is a list of good (senior) actress:
- Matsushima Nanako (she will always be the 1st in my list): Koori no Sekai, Yamato Nadeshiko, Bijo ka Yajuu (co-starring Fukuyama), recent dorama was Eigyo Bucho Kira Natsuko, her last hit was Kaseifu no Mita
- Takeuchi Yuko: Pride, Strawberry Night, Ima Ai ni Yukimasu (movie)
- Matsu Takako: she's awesome in Kokuhaku (movie), her next dorama is Quartet with Mitsushima Hikari, Ryuhei Matsuda on script written by Sakamoto Yuji => a must watch! (not to confuse with Gouriki Ayame movie "Quartet!").
- Nakatani Miki: Ghostwriter, also co-starring Fujiki in Watashi Kekkon Dekinai.
- Tokiwa Takako: Beautiful Life, Meguri Ai, Beautiful Slow Life (SP), she mostly do supporting role now.
- Amami Yuki: Gisou no Fuufu, Boss, Kekkon Shinai, Over 40.
- Nakama Yukie: did you watch Trick? With her, I prefer her doing period movie as in Shinobi or Ooku. Her recent dorama is a bit disappointing.
Unfortunately, jdorama only has one lead (not 4 like korean) and as senior actress they mostly get supporting role.

I think the recent one is
- cold case (police investigate)
- 99.99 lawyer (lawyer but they investigate crime)
- Lucky Seven (private detective)
- Rental Kyuusitshu (when you hire people to do anything you want to investigate)
- Galileo (police officer + physics professor)
- IQ246 - Kareinaru Jikenbo (Genius person solving crime to pass the time)
- Kagi no Kakatta Heya (a lock specialist helping the lawyer/police to solve the closed room accident)

Give Yami no Bansosha a try. Short series with five episodes. Former policewoman, now insurance investigator, is drawn into a murder mystery involving manga artists.
No romance per se, but a bit different from most cop shows.

With Diary of Kyoko you mean Okitegami Kyoko no Biboroku? (If not, watch that.)
Others:
Siren (not a serial, but has a bigger story & romance)
Hard Nut (sort of has romance...)
Lucky Seven (it does suffer from the loss of Eita after a few episodes)
Rondo (okay, this is not detective serial but more like a mix of genres – detective/action/romance)

With 2016 coming to an end.. my resolution of watching more drama is ending as well!
I'm proud to say I watch 50 dramas this year. (Including the ones I dropped)
2017 resolution is to watch less drama. I will do so by completing dramas I haven't finish before starting 2017 new drama.
1. It's Okay that's love
2. Bubblegum
3. Marriage Contract
4. Task Force 38
5. Uncontrollably Fond
6. W
7. Lucky Romance
8. Sweet Stranger and me
Which 3 I should drop for good? I think I really can't continue Lucky Romance and Uncontrollably Fond.
This week so many exempt. Gaah. But wfkbj was so cute...

-Introverted Boss
-Rebel: Theif who stole the people
-Man to Man
-Tomorrow with you

Hi Nanda,
I can't say which dramas that you should drop for good, but I can definitely suggest which you shouldn't. It's okay it's love is one of my favorites, you should definitely continue that one :) Marriage Contract and Squad 38 are great dramas too!
As for W, I love the first half. The second half, not so much. To be exact, the last few episodes kind of confuse me. :(

W is my favorite! I think it's worth finishing, just for the ride.
I'd keep Marriage Contract, too, the last few episodes are the best.
Sweet Stranger and Me starts spinning its wheels in the later episodes and loses a lot of the funny tone, but they were still pretty cute, so there's that.

I got to around episode 12 or so of Lucky Romance when something very cliche happened and I saw noble idiocy coming down the pike. I bailed, but when I've invested that much time (and really did enjoy it to that point), I read up on what happened and watched the last 30 minutes of the last episode.
I personally finished It's Okay, That's Love. I liked but didn't love the drama but it does end well. I forced myself to finish W because I was almost done anyway, and I really did want to see how it ended.
I can't speak to the rest. Of the ones mentioned, the only one on my watch list is Task Force 38.

Marriage Contract was good, but be prepared to cry buckets.
I watched Bubblegum at around the same time as The Time I Loved You, so I got pretty bored of the From-Best-Friends-to-Lovers cliches.
Just sharing.....

watch one episode of 38 Task Force, then some other drama, then another episode of 38 TF - if you watch it all at once, your head might fall off cause it´ll be spinning too much from the twists. they´re a bit exhausting. but in correct doses, it is very good

Happy New Year in advance to all Beanies!
It's been an eventful week for me - Christmas Eve and Christmas (which was amazing because of the family and food), Boxing Day (more fooodddd) and immediately the removal of my wisdom tooth the day after Boxing Day lol.
All this, and work in between and some well-intentioned family members asking me when I'm going to finally get a boyfriend (>_>). If I find a boy who makes me as happy as Joon-hyung from WFKBJ makes me, I'll definitely bring him home hee.
I didn't know that Ep 14 of WFKBJ wouldn't be out till the recap came out and I'm suffering from withdrawal from the drama. I definitely need more Joon-hyung and Bok-joo in my life /cries a river. I'm rewatching episodes 11 to 13 again and again and omg, the more I watch it, the more amazing it gets and the more I want my very own Joon-hyung. I didn't expect myself to be so crazy over a drama especially so close to the end of the year but WFKBJ has been an amazing gift. I do hope the remaining episodes will continue this streak and end well (I'd really love to see Bok-joo deal with Joon-hyung's problems and be a pillar of support for him in return).
As we near the end of an another year, I'd just like to say thanks to the DB team for recapping and sharing some amazing dramas with us. My favourites this year include Signal ('nuff said), Six Flying Dragons (Yoo Ah-in!), Dear My Friends (I cried nearly every ep and the relationship between Jo In-sung and Go Hyun-jung was amazing), WFKBJ and LOTBS.

gosh.
I am feeling slightly sick and my legs & bones hurt a lot. dunno why...
was listening to some radio and what people wrote to the competition of life stories... most are over 70 and write about the war and life as refugee.I´ll need to ask if I can use them in my refugee program in the museum.
Dramas: at the recommendation of "Why you should watch..." I took a look at father I´ll take care of you" but instead of the couple mentioned, I like the construction manager (+?) hipster pairing. They can be hilarious and I don´t need to mention I feel a strong similarity with Jeon Eun. Art School graduate, unsteady employment situation... it got me thinking how the korean society would "grade" me. would they see me as a loser or a successful person? I have many different experiences, I have done lots of non-profit work, Master of Arts, employee of a museum, won some strange writing and art competiton, making and selling my designs? Then, I am also unmarried at 35 and a redhead with freckles. That´s probably not good, right. I dress better than Jeong Eun - AND most people wearing so called "designer" clothes" in dramas, though.
if income is what counts, everyone in Estonia would be the loser category. I think I would be graded 5 out of ten. whats more important, an interesting life, career, family or just money?
So, my QUESTION today is: would you be an ace, an average person, a loser or an uncategorized weirdo if you were a drama character? or if you transferred your current life situation into Korean context?

I assume you're talking about SIG's part. Usual disclaimer, this'll be a really rough translation and might be wrong. First she said that SKL was successful because of SIG, and he said no, the success was due to NJH and how well they all worked together. BTW he moved his chair so that NJH would be in the shot too, very nice. Then she said Louis is the King of Shopping, what is SIG the King of? To which the audience screamed out the correct answer, which is King of Kissing, lol. Then she asked NJH about the kissing. NJH said because of SIG she was able to film the kiss scenes without being nervous. Interviewer asked NJH to speak a little in satoori. Then she asked SIG how it was to be nominated for the daesang, and of course he said he was honored to be nominated. :-)
Hope you feel better soon, redfox, and happy new year!

If I were a character in a k-drama, I think I'd be a combination of everything you listed except the ace. Yup. Went to college on a full scholarship, but didn't do anything with it. Since I started working twenty years ago (!!!!), was always employed with anywhere from one to five jobs. Quirky point of view on almost everything. Middle-aged, no kids, but married and we have a menagerie of animals to keep us busy. Hard on myself/very unforgiving towards myself, but hey... And so I think that puts me in the last three categories you listed, @ redfox. I hope you feel better soon!

I too like the revenge seeking David Lee and Jeon Eun, the 'hipster'. I find her to be a very unconventional Kdrama character. She was somewhat difficult to take at the beginning but now that I got to know her character - like she was a product of an unwed mother - I am beginning to understand that the noise of the 'unfocused/lost/wondering' talented artist is most probably a defense mechanism on her part.
Currently, I am beginning to see that she would be a good 'antidote' for David Lee/Hyun Woo.
I am looking forward to seeing how these 2 'lost souls' help each other out.

yeah, some people say she is annoying, but they just don´t understand her. I agree, that her way of speaking and manners are a defense mechanism. I know cause that´s what I sometimes used to do. I used to think it will distract people from critisizing. It did, for a short while. but things have changed. people no longer critisize cause they think there is something wrong with the other person, but because they crave to see someone hurt and distraught and just take satisfaction at making people cry. of course everyone who is "off the norm" gets the most shit, but really weirdo or not, everyone now gets with the same measure. nobody is safe in this post-truth world.

Happy New Year Beanies!! I wish everyone love, joy, peace, and prosperity in the new year.
I asked this last week, but I was very very late to Open Thread, so I am trying it again. Did anyone watch the Tdrama, The Rose?
It was so strange, but good that I marathoned it and wrote a little review which I'll post here in case anyone is interested.
The Rose
Pros:
•Great job with themes of family and coming of age – that a family is imperfect but still a good thing to have and a woman’s life can be compared to a blossoming flower.
•Super coming of age story for the leading lady and how she changed everyone she met with her pure heart.
•Loved that the mom was always selfish and true to her character and yet, she was never a one-dimensional villain. And although the kids suffer for her actions, she has some redemption in the end. Very satisfying.
•Each of the kids had to deal with the fallout of mom’s selfishness, but they did overcome it in wonderful arcs of their own.
•Jin was a heartbreaking character. The portrayal of him overcoming the death of his fiancée was done in an every day, slice-of-life kind of moment to moment way so it felt like the audience learned to endure right along with him. His love for BH felt earned and real.
•The style was unique. It had an art house 60’s feel. No one ever devolved into slapstick antics. It was portrayed in a realistic way.
•The kids were each unique and true to character throughout, but my favorite thing the director did was to really show them in an isolated bubble away from their mother’s fame. It was only occasionally an issue, as was the money which was a non-issue. I loved that being wealthy was never highlighted. Rather, it was background noise – the house, the cars, etc.
Cons:
•The length could have been shorter. The push pull for the love triangle was done a few too many times (where I felt like they had resolved the issue more than once only to wear me out by bringing it up again).
•I loved Kui’s coming of age antics and the questioning of his own sexuality and love (which were right in line with his abandonment), but once he dealt with them, he became less likable for choosing to still pester BH.
•BH had very little agency, but I did like that her pure heart (which was her strength) always won out.
•There were definitely some mixed messages about incest and rape that could have been clearer. Many times it was great that show confronted them, but a few times lines were crossed and blurred in a way that muddied the story waters.
•In the last few episode the editing cuts were too abrupt and there were a few makjang tropes, but mostly done in an unconventional way which was refreshing.
Overall, I though the show had a completeness to it and an unpredictability that was fulfilling. The style was unlike any other Tdrama that I have seen. I still can’t believe the themes they tackled and I loved the beautiful way in which they...

Happy 2017 to you too, may it bring you heartwarming kdramas.
I have to say, iam not prepared for it. Especially since 2016 had so many great (and floppy) dramas. But we just have to [hope] right? After all it's what we live for.
Iam just happy that even if it was late, 2016 had fulfilled my wish to see Kim Hyun Soo on a role and a leading one on that. Couldn't ask for more.

Ah, finally - a Friday when I can participate in the Open Thread! :waves:
I think we can all agree this has been a bear of a year, but I shan't discourse further on that, except to say good riddance to the bad rubbish of 2016.
In K-drama terms, this has been a lean year for those of us who love supernatural shenanigans in our shows, but what there has been was really good.
Signal was fantastic, and I am hearing whispers of season 2 (squee!) which makes me very happy indeed. Time travel + detectives hits my happy place every time.
Train to Busan: Zombies on a M-F-ing train! What is not to love? I actually bought this and donated it to the library where I work, and every day the wait list for it is longer and longer. So nice to know I'm on the cutting edge. ;)
Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart: Ryeo: This was my Crackfic show. It has a ridiculous title, it has a ridiculous plot, it had weird editing, a seriously melo narrative...all the things that make me hate a show. But for some reason (maybe the prettiness of the cast? Hmm?) I couldn't. stop. watching.
K2: Shower. Fight. Scene. Nuff said? (No supernatural shenanigans, but lots of half-naked fighty-fight, so...)
Goblin: I could watch a solid two hours of Lee Dong-wook making those hilarious faces & generally being clueless about everything. As far as I'm concerned, this show should be called "Reapers, Inc", because I am only really invested in the Reaper's storyline.
Happy New Year, everyone!

And Train to Busan was so beautifully done - I knew from the first scene with the deer that it was going to be super-scary. :)
(Speaking of super-scary movies - I also highly recommend "Under the Shadow". It's an Iranian haunted house movie which is just brilliant.)

After being an avid follower of multiple zombie movies and a show or two, I thought I was over it. But I'm totally watching Train to Busan when I have the chance.
Moon Lovers is just drama crack....The writer takes a lot of blame for the some of the mistakes so she should at least get credit for that.
Hope you have a great year as well.

It was really good - the zombies are fast and relentless, and the hints throughout that something bad is going on outside of the orbit of our plucky band of zombie killers is really chilling. I loved it.
And yeah, Scarlet Heart was just like eating a bucket of popcorn for supper. You know it's bad for you, and it's not going to be a satisfying supper, but still, you can't stop yourself. :)

Hi fellow beanies,
This is randomly got into my mind after watching few sageuks. I'm particularly more interested in Joseon history..
1. I was wondering if it's possible for someone to rise in rank without being married to a royalty, like can a commoner rise in rank after marrying a yangban? I know children from slaves won't have a status or title but will commoner also the same?
2. What would a younger boy called his older sister in saeguk? I noticed a lot sageuks have little sisters for the lead since their fate is usually ended up dead or being sold to gibang.
3. Really curious with these stuff, I was wondering if anyone know good sources onljne?
Thanks in advance and happy new year anyone!!

1. One option would be letting yourself be adopted by a yangban family (if you have a lot of money). How my history teacher described that: "Look, there was a big fire and some of the family records are gone now! But anyway, we found out that our uncle DID have a son! Welcome in the family and how kind of you to bring that much money with you."
2. I think 누이 (nu-i)

I wanted to relay my crazy story to all you.
I know Jun Ji Hyun seems to be beloved by quite a few individuals around these parts.
So there I was, oh I don't know, last year or so, starting the first episode of You From Another Star. Ready for drama crack to ensue (given the show's reputation).
But... as I watched the first episode, I found I didn't really like Jun Ji Hyun that much (I know, right?). I even went so far as to decide I didn't think she was that pretty (I KNOW RIGHT?). So I judged a book by it's cover (1st episode) and dropped the drama entirely. I subsequently put Jun Ji Hyun in my "actresses I don't care for" category and never looked back.
Fast forward to today, where I'm neck deep in the magical waters of Legend of the Blue Sea.
Holy sh-t, what a mistake I made. She has really latched her claws into me with this role. I absolutely love her and this character. I find "Shim Chung" to be ridiculously endearing, hilarious, and wonderful.
My newfound love for her makes it a necessity that I return to YFAS and give it another go.
And further, I've concluded that Jun Ji Hyun's beauty really shines in motion. I've since come around on my assessment of her. I'm now a giddy little fanboy. ;)
Anyway, thought I'd share my long journey to Jun Ji Hyun favor.
P.S. Kinda surprised she didn't get any mention for Best Actress or Character in the End of the Year Awards. I guess it is more of a comedic role. But you know what they say. Comedy is harder than playing it straight or emotional.

I remember watching LOBS when simchung became their compliance and thought how effortless jjh acting it is. That/csy-ish kind of character is definetely her element.
She is majestic underwater, great on joseon scenes but I can t connect with her future endearing char. I always think someone like shin min ah will better fit for childlike scenes. And for some reason, i feel that Lee Jun Ki and Shin Min Ah reunion as Joon Jae and Shim Chung would make my mind blown. :)

I totally get the "not into Cheong Song-Yi at first" thing. I struggled to watch her scenes the first few episodes of MLFAS, but then... she just hooked me. I'm glad you went back and watched it again!

I like Jeon Ji-hyun as an actress, but couldn't relate to her Chun Song-yi. I like her as Shim Chung though, especially in her Joseon scenes.
I woulc recommend one of her earlier films, Il Mare. It's beautiful and one of her best works.

Happy Friday everyone! We're down to 1 last day in 2016. Resolutions anyone?
I returned to kdramaland a little late. I think the last live drama I followed and finished was The Master's Sun. From then till the middle of 2016, I rewatched some of my favourite dramas (Scent of a Woman, Coffee Prince, Lovely Samsoon). The rest of that period was spent consuming conspicuous amounts of k variety shows! Mainly Cool Kiz on the Block, Dad Where are We Going, 2d1n Season 3 and Superman Returns.
I don't remember what led me back to browse the Dramabeans site. But I'm so glad it did. I feel like colour has been brought back in my life. Picked up Heart to Heart and fell madly in love with it. Then I moved on to watch even more.
Dramas I watched and completed this year
- Heart to Heart
- Drinking Solo
- 1% of anything
Currently watching
- Weightlifting Fairy! ??????
- Goblin
- Oh Hae Young Again
I still have a long list of dramas to finish and to finally start watching. My 2017 resolution shall be to watch more kdramas!! And ermmm to also work hard, eat healthily and exercise regularly...
May 2017 be kind to us all! ?

Happy New Years everyone.
I took a small break from K-entertainment a week ago to watch, "Mysterious Skin" with Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It was about two guys who deal with the trauma of childhood sexual abuse in different ways. This was on my watchlist for a number of years due to the critical acclaim that it got. But I was too young at the time to rent or buy it and my library didn't carry it due to its mature rating. It definitely lived up to its reputation in my opinion with great acting. It's a disturbing movie to watch though so it is not for the faint of heart.
I also watched the 1997 movie, "The Contact" with Han Suk-kyu and Jeon Do-yeon last night. It was about a radio producer and a telemarketer who bond together about their loneliness and love through IM messages. Kind of like "You've Got Mail" sort of. It was a pretty low-key romance film with great acting from both Han Suk-kyu and especially Jeon Do-yeon. It also had a great soundtrack from Tom Waits to The Velvet Underground with The Velvet Underground playing a crucial part of the film. It was Jeon Do-yeon's first film and it made her a box office draw and cemented her position as a film actress.
Also finished an old drama, "Fight" which was about a guy who joins an underground MMA fight club. The drama was good, but it had some flaws. It had good action choreography with good acting from some people. However, there was also an unnecessary romance subplot which I thought just distracted from the more compelling storyline of the fight club. It was only 8 episodes so it didn't linger too long. Solid drama overall.

Thanks for sharing! I have the longest ahjussi crush on Joseph Gordon-Levitt. I don't know if I'll ever be ready to watch it. Glad you got to.
Loved Contact because of Han and Jeon. I hope to see them reunite in another film.
I'm watching Man and Woman this weekend. Hopefully it's good. I'm a rom.com girl, I just want to see Jeon in something.
Where do you find these old gems at? I had a hard time looking for Eyes of Dawn. When I finally found it, some of the subs were missing.
I wish Kim Seong Jong's novel version was available in a language I could understand.

It's been a while since I've visited the Open Thread. Boy am I excited for this year to be over. Not only because it's been brutal, but because most of the dramas I'm highly anticipating are set to air in 2017!
I'm only watching one currently airing drama as of late, Solomon's Perjury, which immediately grabbed me with it's impressive characterization and detailed story telling. I'm sad that more people don't seem to be watching, but that's usually the case with JTBC shows.
Since nothing else on air has been able to hold my attention (I was watching LotBS until episode 11, where I fell behind and kinda just lost the interest to catch up...) I been trying to venture into some older dramas. So far I've checked out...
La Dolce Vita: Lee Dong Wook sure is pretty. Even with the unfortunate mustache he's sporting here. This is the first "old school" melodrama I've ever checked out (though I guess you could actually say that Uncontrollably Fond takes that slot, given how out dated it felt). I'm a little apprehensive when it comes to melos...but I'm liking the Film Noir feel that this one has to it. Some things are a little hard to follow...I was having trouble distinguishing the flashbacks from the current storyline, but I think I've gotten the hang of it. I'm still a little confused as to why LDW seemed to be following the female lead in the beginning...and his relationship with Jung Gyu Woon's character...
River’s Edge Okawabata Detective Agency: I haven't seen that many Jdramas in general, but I'm starting to think that checking out Joe Odagiri's entire filmography may not be a bad idea... This one is definitely a little quirky and off-kilter, but seems to have enough heart in it as well for it to still be a little sentimental.
I've only watched the first two episodes of both, but I'm intrigued enough to check out more. As far as 2017 goes, I'm excited for...
Strong Woman Do Bong Soon
Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People
Saimdang, Light's Diary
Tomorrow With You
Introverted Boss
The Package
Missing Nine
Voice

I'm mostly excited for
Tomorrow With You
While You Were Sleeping
Missing Nine

but I'm interested in all the shows you named!
Is Solomon's Perjury really good then? I started the first episode but stopped about halfway in. I'm considering picking it back up.

Yeah, legal dramas don't interest me much. Neither do medical ones, but 2017 seems like it's going to have a lot of the both of them.

Hello, Fellow Beanies!
You know, you never know where watching Korean Dramas is going to lead. My older daughter was the first K-Drama enthusiast in our family, and is the one that got me into them.
Now she's making plans to potentially teach in Korea!

Does anyone know if Odds and Ends is still an ongoing thing? I used to enjoy it a lot so I'm curious what happened to it. The conversation posts used to be my favorites haha
And how is everyone's healths here in DB? Is Javabeans still down for the count? Last time I checked she had back troubles or something... but my memories aren't that great so I'm not sure. Anyways, hope that everyone will go into 2017 (wow, so fast) in great health! ^^
