Desperation among the stranded in Missing 9

More stills have been released for MBC’s upcoming Wednesday-Thursday drama Missing 9, about nine survivors stranded on an uninhabited island following an unprecedented plane crash that turns the country upside down. The cast features Jung Kyung-ho (One More Happy Ending), Baek Jin-hee (My Daughter Geum Sa-wol), Choi Tae-joon (Flower in Prison), Lee Sun-bin (Police Unit 38), and Chanyeol (To the Beautiful You).

Jung Kyung-ho plays a former idol bandleader who’s past his prime yet still hanging on to the tiniest shred of celebrity he has left, and Baek Jin-hee plays his newbie stylist who left her home, where she made a living as a deep-sea diver, to pursue her dreams in Seoul. Unfortunately, they get along as well as oil and water. But his lack of survival skills forces him to rely on her resilience and know-how, and they grow closer amidst harsh conditions.

Four months after the plane crash, she miraculously returns to Korea as the only remaining survivor, and the sole witness to the incident. But it isn’t a pleasant homecoming for her, still reeling from the trauma of what happened on that island and now having to deal with and respond to the country’s fascination with the harrowing event. She also has a reason that holds her back from revealing the whole truth.

Choi Tae-joon plays a former idol member who was in the same band as Jung Kyung-ho, but is currently enjoying the second pinnacle of his career as an actor. But then the plane crash occurs, and his egocentric tendencies emerge, as well as his inferiority complex toward Jung Kyung-ho. He uses people without remorse in his desperation to survive, which causes problems for all the other survivors.

Lee Sun-bin plays a top actress from the same agency as Choi Tae-joon and Jung Kyung-ho. She’s frank and straightforward, but these traits belie her fragility and a painful secret.

Chanyeol plays a character who was also in the same band as Jung Kyung-ho and Choi Tae-joon before it dissolved, but has succeeded as a beloved solo artist due to his good looks and songwriting prowess. Despite the desperate situation he and the other survivors are plunged in, he tries to ease the tension with his easygoing optimism and amicable demeanor. He’s the youngest of the survivors and a light that gives hope to everyone.

The premise is undeniably fascinating, especially with only one survivor at the end of it, and I wonder if island life will turn into Lord of the Flies. When thrust into such an extreme situation, desperation can bring out the best and worst in people, and that psychological exploration is what I’ll be looking forward to the most.

Missing 9 will premiere on MBC at the beginning of 2017.

So is this drama going to consist of flashbacks? I'm wondering because we already know that only one person survives and it mentions her dealing with everything after she gets back. Are they going to show her getting back early on (in the first episode) and then reveal everything that happens on the island as the series progresses as flashbacks of a sort?

I don't know but i keep finding the premise sounds so much like Lost. It makes me both worried and excited tho. I mean who would skip 38 Police Unit writer's project?

The premise sounds extra exiting, good when you know its the writer behind great dark thrillers like Bad Guys, Vampire Prosecutor.

I mean i enjoyed Police Unit 38 but it was not near as great as Bad Guys, Vampire Prosecutor or as much thriller as this drama sounds and those two dramas.

Yes Lost was the first thing that came to mind when I read this though this sounds much darker with only one survivor left at the end - almost like a Battle Royale or Hunger games kind of scenario.

is there an explanation why they are all dressed in beige and white? Is there some kind of plane crash dresscode? Is it part of the mystery?

They just wanna match it with their hair color.

Easier to show how dirty and bedraggled they are after the crash? Would be harder to make the dirt stick on black clothes...

Best guess I've seen so far is that they had a photoshoot after they were supposed to land. Doesn't really explain why the stylist would be matching as well, but idk ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Perhaps it's done to match the hue of Subway sandwiches they'd be munching on post-crash.

Subway: your lifeline to survival.

Baek Jin Hee survives by drawing a smiley face on a 12 inch sub and naming it Wilson.

No truer words were ever spoken.

"I'm sorry Wilsooonnn!" says Baek Jin Hee after swallowing the sandwich whole.

I would think with Jung Kyung-ho and Choi Tae-joon, there will be plenty of foot long / 12 incher subs....

Is there such a thing as Subway overstaying it's welcome? Because I totally roll my eyes at Subway jokes now when I used to chuckle.

The subway jokes have outnumbered the actual subway PPL. We have become a parody of ourselves 0_0

I've been wondering about that neutral palette since the first stills, too. Now some of these pictures are giving me a really ghost-y feel. (Then again, I just rewatched 3 & 4 of Goblin, maybe I just have otherworldly things on my mind.)

yeah right... it's kinda bothering as if they're from another planet and crashed their spaceship in an island. That pic with the guy in all white in an airplane with too much lightning gave me that vibe. And their hairs were almost similar in shades. Almost. ?

"only survivor"
"without remorse"
"desperation"
"painful secret"

Sure sounds like my kind of drama! There's a special place in my heart for dark psychological stories. Now don't disappoint!

This went from seeming really cringe-worthy to looking like it might be one of the most promising dramas of the new year. Hope it won't disappoint.

Ikr?
I want them all to survive together. But Baek Jin-hee being the only survivor doesn't bode well. At least it's not a sageuk, so we still have hope.

Wait, so we kinda know already know the ending being a tragedy since only one person returns from the island? What's the point of watching? I'll probably wait for reviews and see how the whole drama plays out before I indulge myself into watching something that has a guaranteed tragic ending.

Based on the stills, it looked like it's going to be a comedy but I guess not.

Unless they are gonna put a funny twist in it saying that the rest of the group enjoys the island too much that they decided to stay while only one person ends up leaving because she wants to.

I think siamdang scheduled to start after LOTBS whic is 20 eps. So Missing 9 will end before siamdang starts airing if it's 16 episodes.

no way Missing 9 will end before Saimdangs airing, there will be only two weeks gap between them .. Missing 9 and Chief Kim are supposed to air on 12 Jan, while Saimdang will air two weeks later on 26 Jan.

Ohhh, I hope it's good. The premise sounds fantastic and I like the dark turn they are taking with only one survivor.
I loved Baek Jin Hee and Jung Kyung Ho in their previous projects; they are really good and I expect them to bring the intensity that a story like this needs. I'm adding this to my watchlist :D

The premise sounds so fascinating and different for a k-drama I really want it to be good despite all the behind the scene drama with all the title changes. Especially because I love Jung Kyung Ho.

I must be a lil' out for thinking this during all these stranded stories and chaos. But what do they do during periods?

I may be analyzing it to much but maybe a reason why their all wearing the same colors is because it's her flashback, in total what color clothing they were wearing doesn't matter eventually it all just blends together in her memories. Plus it adds to the mysterious and haunting feeling, if that's what the producers were going for.

Well, I guess MBC is gonna try a different approach for the WED-THU timeslot.
But it looks interesting, I think I'm gonna watch this one too.

I'm kind of a very hooked viewer for this MBC timeslot for a while now, and always being surprised in a good way.

Well, im not sure if this is some of those fusion dramas as in thriller/idol/romcom drama but if its a romcom and we already know shes 'the only survivor', then we wont even get to ship them... if its a thriller onnits own, it could work but im not sure about the ratings
