MBC in talks to conclude W with special broadcast

I’m not surprised that MBC is working on getting a special broadcast together for current Wednesday-Thursday ratings leader W–Two Worlds. The romance suspense drama about parallel worlds starring Lee Jong-seok and Han Hyo-joo isn’t a ratings juggernaut — I think it’s a little too fantasy for that, or in the words of my mother, “Too scary!” — but the show has been consistently in the lead since its second week on the air, with heaping praise in the press for the cast and crew, especially the mind-bending writing.

The 16-episode series was pre-empted in early August due to Olympics programming, which left the weekly episode pairings off by one; Episode 16 is due to air on Wednesday, September 14, and nothing has been slotted in for W’s hour on the following night. MBC is currently in talks to air a special broadcast of highlights and behind-the-scenes extras, though nothing has been decided because September 15 also happens to be Chuseok, which often means special holiday programming. But! When my family gathers, we watch dramas!

This is one case where I might not have complained about a one-episode extension, since I love the show and could easily watch an hour-long fantasy episode where our hero gets all the kisses he wants, or hell, even an hour of B-sides following nerdy fanboy Su-bong around while he does all the little things, like research deadly poisons, make fan art of his manhwa dream girl, or help his faceless boss go to the bathroom. But I’ll always respect a writer’s decision to stick to the original plan, and in the case of a show as suspenseful, addictive, and twisty as W, I’d hate to see the story falter in its final stretch.

W–Two Worlds airs on Wednesdays and Thursdays on MBC, and will be followed by Shopping King Louie on September 21.

Personally, I didn't feel much about Seokbum's character.
Instead, the bromances I wanted to see more would be between SB and KC, or even KC and DY. I wonder how it would be between SB and DY if they ever had a chance to meet. A follow up scene between Crazy Dog and KC would be interesting too.

Those sound awesome as well!! I guess part of me is just in love with Seokbum - he's such a nice guy and CLEARLY (or at least clearly in my delusional fan vision) has been waiting for YeonJoo... And she never even noticed him. At least Subong gives him hugs. I'm glad there's not a major focus on a love triangle or anything, but I can envision a heart-tugging backstory in Seokbum.

All of which to say, the writer and the actors have all been killing it in this show. <3

W is the only series I am watching right now. And yes, I do feel the word under-utilised will be right for Seok Bum's character. The actor is really talented to be wasted like this.

I would like to see DY and SeokBum together.. I am a fan of High School King of Savvy. Fell head over heels for SIG in it. Meanwhile DY & Seok Bum were an awesome duo there. Would like to see them in a scene or 2..

Like everyone, I just want to see KC & YJ living happily..for a very long time. Is it too much to ask for?

And who cannot love SuBong.....He is pure awesome.. and a joy to watch. His million dollar expressions!!!

@Newbee and Cocoboo I'm glad there are others who want to see more of Seokbum's character!

I like to think optimistically, though - instead of saying that actor is "wasted" in this role, I like to think, "Thank goodness every actor does such a great job, even in the smaller roles." This way, even the small bits of time we spend with Seokbum, we can feel he is a real person, living his own life, off screen. It makes the drama-world seem that much more real. Thanks, supporting actors and actresses for bringing the world of W to life!

(Hehe, posting on Dramabeans is fun, I don't know why I just lurked for so many years <3)

A special would be nice if it will be BTS and commentaries. An extension, like a special episode, would be nice too but not necessary and definitely not at the expense of the original plan of the writer.

Let's keep it as it is, happy ending or not. I think I've accepted this following the events of Episode 13. Yes, just give it to us, Song Jae jung. Whatever it is you've got. I'm ready.

I respect the writer and the station for sticking to their plan too, because they seem not greedy, even though the show is a success i thought they might extend it, to 17 or 18 episodes, I don't like when a show gets an extension, even when i enjoy it.

0

Required fields are marked *

My thoughts too! Often networks or whoever is behind the decision will want to extend a drama that is doing well and the drama ends up being a mess. I like how a few weeks back, they already released a statement that there will be no extension and that Song Jaejung planned it for 16 episodes and they will follow that. Unless of course there will be a change in the wind from now until next week. Who knows? I hope the writer sticks to what she wants.

I don't like extensions either, but I mean what harm would a 1 episode extension do? This is not like they are extending it by several episodes to ruin the flow. I think a 1 episode extension wouldn't ruin the story, because it is a short extension. Anyways I just want this drama to have a good ending. I will miss it when it finishes.

0

Yeah, W and Signal top the list for thriller this year.

0

I figured out why W has such low ratings compared to other dramas (like Doctors, for example)...it;s because the story is too smart for most viewers!

I realized some time ago that most Kdrama viewers are too lazy to follow a plot that is smart and full of twists and turns, like W or Police unit 38! They prefer a lazy romance where the plot runs like a shallow clear river, rather then an ever-twisting plot that drops into a waterfall!

0

Required fields are marked *

Whoa. "too smart for most viewers". Don't go that far. There are millions of people of the world. They have different preferences. Your comment sounds offensive especially to Koreans who's the basis of the ratings.

W's ratings is doing great. And i don't get why you have to compare it to Doctors, which is a Mon-Tue show. So technically they're not even a direct competition.

And also, South Korean Broadcasting company doesn't have to please "smart international viewers" like you. So unless you are paying them to make this dramas, Stop whining and just watch the show that you want.

I didn't mean to offend anyone with my comment, so I think I should clarify what I meant to say. When I said that W is "too smart for some viewers", I wasn't referring to their intellect, but their preference in what shows they watch. I think most Koreans prefer more simple shows and dramas, with lots of romance and predictable/cliche plots and that's why this kind of shows have high ratings.
I only mentioned Doctors because it's the most recent drama with high ratings (almost double the ratings of W), and while I'm glad it had good ratings, I feel sad for the production team of W, who work just as hard, but are not rewarded with the same ratings!

To be fair to viewers, when I'm watching on tv, I'm usually multi-tasking like cooking or playing with the dog. So I also watch local shows that are easy to follow. It's not because I'm too stupid to understand the complex shows. I just prefer to watch the complex shows on the pc or online because then I can stop and rewind things and even pause to Google "Does plain potassium exist in liquid form and is it injectable via syringe"

But yeah, I agree with your point too! :)

0

Required fields are marked *

It's way too harsh to inject. It's usually put into 100cc's of normal saline and given slowly. A low K+ is usually the result of severe vomiting and diarrhea.

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

@Al'sBevy, that's what I remember from years of getting sick! The label is something like potassium salt? But Dad in W just drew a vial with "Potassium" label. What a lazy writer...

0

Ah @mary I know what you were wondering now. Potassium replacements by IV are actually KCl salt solutions, not just K alone- we disregard the effect of Cl anions because the amount is low compared to the amount of Cl in the blood.
Normal blood K levels are 3.5-5 mmol/L while Cl levels are around 110 mmol/L or so. When we replace K when it is low, we usually give the 10-20 mmol of the KCl solution each time over 1-2 hours. So the Cl level doesn't get affected much. So it's not entirely surprising if it's labelled separately in a bold way just POTASSIUM or HIGH ALERT MEDICATION because it is dangerous and nobody wants to give it wrongly accidentally. And we ignore the Cl because it doesn't really matter. Which is just convenient for lazy dad writer. ?
And it's fun to share knowledge- I though the video of That Cat was really clever- easier to understand than all the stuff my friend tried to explain at least. ?

0

@mary! Haha. Why do you need to know so much about potassium hmmm? ? Trying to get rid of other SJR fangirls? ?

FYI I made a post in my blog about Potassium that time when it was the murder weapon of choice in W and BM. Just for fun. XD

0

In no way did I mean to say that viewers who prefer more relaxing shows are "stupid", because I also watch a few shows like that while multi-tasking! I only meant to say that dramas like W are the ones to make my brain work at 200% capacity and to keep it buzzing a long time after I finished watching an episode, so I enjoy this kind of workout for my brain!

Eek sorry for my using that word. :( Bad word choice on my part.

0

I kind of agree that the show is too smart for its own good. It shot itself in the foot by being too plot centric with impossible twists and failed to make a true emotional connection with its viewers.

I guess we can agree that W and Police Unit 38 are not relaxing dramas, hence the reason for their ratings.

But i thought PU38 are doing good with ratings considering that it was aired in a cable channel?

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I am sad for the rating but then it actually quite hard to watch tv religiously these day,
I just hope people and the broadcasting company can have another thing to measures the public reception,
W definitely has the buzz online, very high and people stream/download the video than watching it live,

an easy drama it easier to catch up when you are behind,
I think that's the secret recipe for DOTS but drama with heavy re-herring between episode can't just enjoy at random episode,

i just hope drama can understand the problem themselves, that good drama is not boring if they executed good within their genre,

it pointless to judge someone taste and that's why we have the review, to make people realised the drama valued and appreciated it better

TL;DR : just spread the goodness cause it will last long, probably get enjoyed a long time after today with much loved, remembered and appreciated because it's good,
it better for me than a momentarily peaked ( a peak is always good but being remembered as a good thing is better)

^^

I think a great use of a special episode slot for something like this would be to do a "side story." Like a 1-episode drama special involving some of the supporting cast.

For instance, So Hee becomes involved in a mystery she has to solve while Su-Bong takes over writing (like he's writing a back of the comic story). She and the bodyguard dude (both criminally underused TBH)

MBC is so full of themselves with this drama that turned out to be such a big disappointment. Special episode earlier was probably designed to compete with Doctors, but failed miserably. The writer keeps lifting lines and scenes from Doctors. The main leads have no chemistry. And the story is pretty boring. I would have expected a lot more from the scriptwriter of Nine Times Travel.

oml commenters are about to rip you apart for this lmao. i'm not watching W myself and i really loved doctors but i think this is a bit unfair.
i don't understand how the special ep is meant to compete with doctors. is it because the latter gave us so much bts or for ratings? bc you know they aired during different time slots right
are there really duplicate scenes and lines? i only remember the scene where both of the guys ask the girl if they are in a relationship that a tumblr user posted screencaps about
i don't see the chemistry either but that's probably bc i'm not watching the drama lol
and oh god i doubt the story is boring. while i'm not usually one to judge without watching, all of these viewers, domestic and international alike, seem to really enjoy the unpredictably of the writing

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Okay I respect your opinion of the W since it cant exactly be everyone's cup of tea but to say that it steals lines from Doctors is a little bit of a reach, don't you think? I'm assuming that the scene that you think W stole from Doctors is the "Do you have a husband?" line, which showed up during episode 3 in W.
First of all, kdrama dialogues have been repeated over and over again in the past so you could easily say that Doctors also stole lines from all of the previous dramas out there (which i bet they haven't), just like how W supposedly stole Doctor's. Secondly, W's script was completed up to 8 episodes before they even started filming (which was way back in May/June) and nearly half of W was pre-produced while Doctors was live-shooting and the script was being written as the episodes were airing. So who's to know who "stole" scenes. I doubt it was anyone's intention.
I honestly don't know what you mean by how the special episode was planned earlier to compete with Doctors. Doctors is in a completely different time slot so its not their main competition and it ended long before W's ending, plus it clearly says in the news that MBC is still deciding whether or not to air a special so they obviously didn't plan it earlier either.
Lastly, how is MBC full of themselves with this drama? What have they done that makes it seem like they're overly confident with the drama, because they barely even promoted it before it started airing. Its not like this drama's ratings are over 20%- its staying within the lower double digits- so i doubt they consider it a hugeee success, even with the mania following online and in the press.
And though I haven't watched Doctors fully(i've seen clips here and there plus some bts), I feel sad that you're comparing it to a totally different drama in terms of story and genre. You're just tainting the reputation of the fans.

Not really, competition is REALLY taught at this time slot, so getting double digits is already good

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I dare to say in this case it has nothing to do with fame/media exposure/you name it, but with the story line. And W really is really something beyond crazy in this respect. Twists, and cliffhangers and variables. When I heard the word variable the only thing I could thought of, was the line from Lost "Desmond is my constant". Now, who's the constant in this story? Or maybe who is the constant to whom?
And coming back to LJS, I don't know know what's best: to have 30% for a not-so-special, predictable, and sort of easy to forget show or to stick to a decent 11-12% for a brilliant, mind blowing, totally unpredictable show that keeps the viewers' mind on full throttle ...weeks, maybe months after the show is over.

0

Required fields are marked *

It's not 2007, lower teens is perfectly fine for a drama these days. For sadly low ratings, look at I Remember You and Sassy Go Go which were lucky to break 5%. :(

Healer, which is basically considered a cult favorite now, got about 8-9%, but had a large internet following. Ratings alone don't mean as much today as they did 10 years ago. Internet crazes like what is happening with W can make a huge difference in terms of visibility and popularity of a drama. More and more people are watching online, especially younger people who really lead the fandom crazes.

Nonetheless, double digit is already good because it's hard to come by. Even Pinocchio on the average got 12-13% and it's considered a hit.

It's the best of the time slot, so it's still a success and highly popular drama.

Also, it's not on LJS alone - success or failure, a drama is the combined efforts of all the cast and crew.

Korean viewers consider LJS as one of the actors who has good eye for projects/the kind of actor they can trust in terms of projects. The guy picks one drama a year and takes a long break. At least his comeback is always something to look forward to to make up for his long absence. hehe! Sorry, I cannot deal with the fact that it will take time before we see him on tv again. I hope we get subs for VIP.

If only Lee Jong Seok has the stamina of Kang Ha Neul... *wink
In the future I wish LJS not only has good eye for a project but also brave enough to try different spectrum of character to enrich his acting skill. He's right about feeling a step behind Yoo Ah In (in terms of acting skill, though he has many charms. I'm head over heel in love with this guy)

Back in 2013 he did back to back drama and movie. It was a good year for his fans. I want him to rest, but to also see him quite often every year (2 dramas/yr?) haha!

It's great that he's going to play a villain soon. It will enrich further his acting and since he'd be working with veterans, he'll surely learn a lot. I do want him to do sageuk drama or a fun, light family weekend drama. I know he said he thinks sageuk doesn't suit him, so I guess that'll remain a dream for me. :(

Subong's story would be nice too... Maybe Sohee can go to the real world and meet Subong...

A prologue of the story would be nice, but I'd be really interested in a BTS of the writer and the whole crew (special effects, drawing, music, etc). Hearing about how the writer came up with the story, seeing how they drafted the storyboard/storyline of each episode, seeing the team discussing any story issues, details, studio and costumes settings... Kinda like watching the creators of a world creating its own world too...

I'd be happy if the writer could answer the top 10 questions from viewers of the show.

That and her thoughts on shrodinger's cat theory plus her take on drama tropes.

I wouldn't want them to stretch the drama, because I feel like we ran out of story as soon as New face was killed, and to think we still have 3 episodes to fill in!

YES! A special broadcast is nice, I'm already sad it's almost the end...this drama is really one of the top dramas of all time for me.

A whole hour of only Su Bong would probably mean a ruined sofa for me from all the jumping up and down in joy lol. I've consistently loved Lee Si Un in every role he's had, this one is no different. It was pretty fun to watch Ho Gu's Love for the first time this week and find him a webtoonist there as well :D

While they are at special episode, can they release the manhwa volume as well please???

I mean all the drawings are done already and its so beautiful. They could just print and sell it. Which would get them a ton of money.

I mean I cant read a single letter of Korean, but I will buy that!!!!

Pretty please????

I'm proud of W no matter what, it's quite a pioneer. Who would have thought a complicated fantasy thriller like W would ever be aired in the Big 3 and that the rating would manage to survive, not to mention be first in its timeslot. I never expected that, I had said even before it aired that I wouldn't put expectations on high ratings due Song Jaejung's record.

If they had made this a straight-up romance easy for everyone to digest about a girl hopping back and forth between two worlds to simply romance the male lead then I think it would have gotten higher ratings, but the productions stuck to their guns and went all out and I'm so happy.

I completely agree. One of the reasons we love this show so much is that it makes us think - and about hard stuff like the nature of reality and perception, definitions of self, the relationship between artist and creation.
Most people turn on the TV to stop thinking, to escape from their lives with some easily digestible tale about good guys and bad guys. This show is not going to appeal to them. They want something more like DOTS, or Doctors, or any one of a thousand perfectly fine romantic comedies.
W is something really different, and it is very rare indeed for different = wildly popular.

They could have repeated the antics from episode 2-3 for 14 episodes and used the plot in episode 4 as the finale. That could have been unique all the same. But no, they decided to go all out, instead of going the easy path.

Anyone curious about what happened in the first 33 volumes of W?

Like KC hired all these professionals to solve criminal cases through a television show! That is an awesome setting that can be easily developed in to a hour long mini movie!

Yes it could be on OCN. A crime thriller!

I just wish I could have volume 34 in my hand! It would be so amazing to see those beautiful pictures directly and flip through them!

It is, they are almost live shooting right now according to fanpics. The post-production must have been taking a toll on the show.

I'm grateful to the whole crew and their hard work.
The show has been awesome in its execution and details. That must have demanded lots of work. They all must be really exhausted right now, and yet, are still thriving to deliver a great show.

Like DOTS. I can't seem to connect with this show. Even my husband who loved scifi, metafiction and have watched the weirdest movie out there can't seem to like this. And points out the inconsistencies a lot whenever i watch this. Lol.

It's unique, yes. But brilliant? I don't think so. For me, this is too much fantasy to the point that it lacks logic. Sorry.

Don't be sorry mate! It's your opinion and you have every right to it....but it does not reflect the opinion of others...just because you don't find any logic in this drama doesn't necessarily mean it doesn't really have logic at all..it's just a matter of preference I guess...like they said to each his own! ;))

You and your husband sound like you're fans of the hard science spectrum of scifi, whereas W Is much more of the fantasy genera. I love fantasy but like Shane implied, it's not for everyone. There is a good bit of logic attached to the plot, however it's not without its flaws. Yet, I feel like a lot of the identified "plot holes" were actually plot points left open to be explained in a later episode. Just look at old recaps to see the supposed plot holes people identified only to have them explained later.

I hope you find a show this year that you and your husband can enjoy together. It's fun to love something together. Sherlock is that show for me and my love. ?

This drama is soo DAEBAK - the characters, the writer, the director, all of it. It's been awhile that I invested - emotionally & mentally - on a drama. The only thing that keeps me sane while waiting for the next episodes is doing overtime to shorten the wait. Hats off not only to the

I just wonder if they gonna sell those comics coz I'm gonna buy the whole volume and it doesn't matter if it's translated to English or not.

Just a funny thought in my mind. The moral of the drama? Don't draw a faceless villain or it will come back to take you face ???

I will have withdrawals when W ends. It's one of the few dramas I watch realtime and managed to maintain my excitement throughout. This drama will stay with me long after it ends, whatever the ending will be.
