Hello.

To be quite honest, I'm sad with dramaland. It seems like nothing can make me happy, you know? I watch dramas since 2014 and I completed 30 and dropped 30, oops.

I was watching Age Of Youth and although I agree it's great and revolutionary due the fact it talks about female relationships, there's something that bothers me a lot, the excessive sexual talk. They are almost always talking about sex, like all everyone in their 20s (early 20s mainly) is crazy about the subject.

I couldn't watch episode 5 yet, because I know this subject is the center of the episode. I'm 22 years old, the same age as some of the characters, I'm a college student, and I know TONS of girls who doesn't care about these kind of stuff, me included.

The series is great in the whole "I'm going to put female characters on the spotlight" aspect, but I'm simply tired of what I talked about. Reminds me a lot of The Good Wife. Episode 6 made me drop it. Why everything needs to be about guys? And why so early? Couldn't they wait a little? Mainly in TGW, since it's 16 episodes long.

Don't missunderstand me, I'm a straight girl but the focus on guys and girls relationships in media is dangerous to me, (actually, the whole romance focus in something that isn't romantic, no matter if girl-girl or boy-boy), because you're basically teaching that a person is only normal if she/he has a relationship. There's rarely a single and happy person on media.

TL;DR: Not all people fall in love and girls in their 20s aren't obsessed with boyfriends, meeting someone or sexual subjects.

It annoys me that K Dramas are so heavily centered around relationships. It cuts down on the amazing stories that could be told. I think DOTS would have been stronger if it had been like a 24 style political thriller not Doctors and Soldiers Dating in an Exotic Land but that's just Korean culture - and the target audience seems to like it. Unless viewers start to reward different kinds of works it'll be hard to see dramas that don't have romance at its core.

True. I wish that other kinds of relationships would be portrayed as being equally important in media. I absolutely hate when romantic relationships are presented as being the ultimate form of love. Love has many forms and none are less powerful than the other. They are just different.

The worst is the lack of strong long lasting friendships between a man and a woman that never toes the line of romance and/or sex ("Man and Woman can't be friend" is my least favourtie line). I have such a hard time thinking of examples of purely platonic friendships between people of opposite gender (mostly between heterosexual individuals) in the media. Friendship is so important to me. I have a hard time relating to character's that value romance over it. ("We are friends" "But I want more!" sigh-.- )

When will there be a character that is asexual (or demi-sexual) but that is not an alien or a socially awkward genius who needs to be "cured". I understand the obsession with sex but I cannot relate to it at all because it is such a small part of my reality. I am tired of feeling abnormal because of all this. I am glad that I am not alone :)

So is there a drama with asexual characters? I am really interested cause I haven't seen any dramas dealing with this kind of thing except for Its Ok Its love

The male and female friendship that was platonic is between hantai and Najung in reply 1994 but definitely kdramas lack these friendships

why don't you start to watch jdorama? there are tons of jdorama which doesn't revolve around romance, zero romance or even making fun of relationship (as in nothing is wrong in being single)

Agree! If you're looking for a slice of life kind of drama then Jdrama is perfect. It has a different format from Kdrama so you might need some time to get used to it. Also, you only watch 8-11 episodes so that's the upside!

I agree that jdramas are much better in offering stories without any romance whereas in kdramas it's like you're sometimes force-fed romance when zero is needed (or zero would even improve the story massively!).

But I'm not sure I can entirely agree with this observation:

<as in nothing is wrong in being single

because when it comes to romance dramas specifically, including the ones that are supposed to show empowered single women, somehow they always end up married in the end. At least there were several I watched where the message supposedly was "There's nothing wrong with being single", yet the drama's conclusion seemed to totally contradict this. Prime example: Kekkon Shinai (Wonderful Single Life) where for some reason (SPOILER) they had to pair up everyone.

I mean, there might be exceptions, but generally speaking I still feel that even jdramas haven't quite reached that point of "nothing wrong with being single" yet.

Kekkon Shinai's ending was mehhh. This also reminds me of another Amami Yuki drama, Around 40, where the single is good message was pushed through but in a rather awkward way that didn't quite work.

Required fields are marked *

Yes... "Around 40". Or "He Who Can't Get Married". Various dramas about single people, who are supposedly fine with being single but somehow that message doesn't get across, because it's still presented as that they're losing out somehow, will regret it or will get back together with the person because they'll wait for each other for multiple (!) years.

The only time I got that message with "single is perfectly okay" is actually in a kdrama, with Kim Bu-Gi, one of the side characters in "Still, Marry Me".

0

Around 40 is meh, but it still has the message and I somehow get it. I do like it better than Kekkon Shinai. I kinda get (subtle) empowering single women (or women in general) vibe from Hataraki Man though.
I think Kekkon Dekinai Otoko is kinda similar with Kazoku no Katachi in which they are about people who're actually fine to live alone but it's not bad or even better if they meet someone. I also get similar vibe from Saigo Kara.

0

in Over 40, doesn't she choose to pursue her own career? or may be I remember it wrong since it was long time ago so I don't really remember the story (only remember that Fujiki is there).

agree that Kekkon Shinai is bad. I was sold on the first eps, want to see her (Amami Yuki char) to show the world that she can raise up again despite being single (seriously, what's with her demotion in the first place, that's so discriminating). but then the plot start to crumble and I flip the table by the last eps.

yes even in jdorama (romance genre), they encouraging ppl to have relationship, marry, and have children. I guess it has something to do with decreasing birth rate in japan.
but in other genre, they often show character who is single, capable, and don't really care about dating or relationship and still feel happy with that.

0

@yukari,
She does choose her career in the end, but I think it was done rather awkwardly and I didn't like it. Yes, I only remember Fujiki in that drama, haha.

I don't know if the trend is getting worse, but a lot of the recent rom-coms featuring older single women have been rather unpleasant, implying from the get-go that something must be wrong with them if they're still single after all this while and so obviously need a man to rescue them. Bah.

0

I haven't seen the drama version but from memory Gou Gou the Cat didn't really stress the romance. I have yet to watch Alice's Thorn but not really expecting a romance there. They also have dramas like Second Movement and Gohostwriter, nothing flash but not a romance either.

Oh @moonlight, first let me give you a hug as some one who is in a semi drama slump as well. I know how you feel.

I think there are kdramas which don't focus on the boy-girl relationship side of things, though I will agree with you that they aren't the norm. I actually think that Kdramas fare much better than say US TV shows in terms of sexuality and it's attitude towards sex. And I do feel that the fact that Kdramas focus on the relationship, rather than the sex to be why I prefer to watch them in the first place. But that is my non american biased point of view ;)

I went to an all girl school till I was 16 and I LOVED how uncomplicated my close group of girl friends were, no boys (definitely no sex talk!) at all, and it was undoubtedly the best time of my life. So I feel you when you wish Age of Youth was less about the boys/sex, even thought I just started watching it and am quite enjoying it.

Have you seen Kdramas Liar Game, TEN, Signal? Jdrama 99.9 Keiji Senmon Bengoshi? I haven't watched many dramas but just off the top of my head those are the ones without much or any romance at all. Hope this helps you out of your slump!

I was also going to mention PU38. When a great show that focuses on the love of family, whether blood-related or found family its really special. Also, School 2013 is a great drama with no romance. And it features a developing relationship between and man and woman that has nothing to do with romance and everything to do with professional respect.

I do understand the preference about less sex talk etc I'm with you there. I'm a bit of an Eun Jae so it goes over my head anyways and that's not what draws me to the show.
It's their friendship and flaws that I can relate to.

The show is not about high school age kids and it's on a restricted channel. I think they are touching on some real issues here that is sex related, like sexual harassment etc.

@Moonlight I might be called prudish but the first and foremost reason for me coming to kdramas was to avoid hollywood forever. I got absolutely disgusted and sick with the current trend of showing obscene/vulgar/illegitimate relationships, mental filth is the worst to get over with. I can say names but I won't lol, just to save you guys off the hook. K-dramas,a little earlier times were full of romance, sweet and chocolaty, but this was the first reason I got to kdramas. The culture and how people interact in those societies were also one attraction point yes. May be boys over flowers or Princess hours were full of nonsensical, over the top tropes, but I liked those just because they showed romances of the youth for what it is.
But these days a good wife got a remake, and there was explicit scenes from the husband's affairs, and there were sounds that was awkward, uncomfortable to watch on screen, and I wondered if the drama was necessary. If anyone wants to see that drama they can just go over the american version, and be satisfied with it. The problem is american dramas/movies are experimenting a lot,and now there is no limit, kind of. End of the day I don't want to see a sci-fi,or an alien,or a girl with seven doppelgangers going undercover or running for her (seven) lives forever, or a man going loony having conversation with a call service operation voice..and even going to extent of trying to spending his life with her, really. I'm tired of the coolness. Cool is the new boring I think.. So I wish kdramas do not take resort of these excessive topics to make us audience happy. We want to watch kdramas for what it is...nothing more, nothing less.
On side note I do love age of youth, but I agree with the topic of sex being mentioned a lot. There are a looot more that gets covered in the girl talks, unfortunately boys take the center stage at dramas or movies like age of youth or sisterhood of travelling pants, but at least age of youth is also about the ghosts, or unfortunate sickness, or the pain of being an introvert. I absolutely loved the first episode and the timid girl could actually be the main lead of this drama if her story continued. She was the most innocent one out of all five and does not just think about kisses or hugs all the time it seems. But anyway, every other episodes also have a headline and the story circles around that, the concept is a lot fresh and unique that way.I would say age of youth is way better than a UF or DOTS or doctors. There are lots of side stories to the girls and the scenes are not just fillers.

I also hope Kdrama can still manage to save their innocentness and their melodrama,

It's one of genre I can't find in another type of drama, there is some overlap with J-drama and C/T drama, but I feel like Kdrama gives another style for its,
I think it's the emphasise on the 1st love that really gets me,
the innocent feeling and the freshness of loving someone without complicated logic or just about the needs,

I am planning to re-watch You are the apple of my eye this weekend,

You do know that there is a difference between shows on the big 3s (SBS,MBC,KBS) and cable right?

Both AOY and Good Wife are shown on cable for a reason. It may be geared towards a more mature audience and some of it's content can not be shown on the free public channels.

Maybe you should avoid cable shows if you prefer Boys Over Flowers type of romance etc. You can't expect a chaste and innocent if you decide to flip the channel to HBO right?

Lol @kiara I don't really like BOF to be exact, I was meaning to say I've seen a lot of dramas where it's more focused on boys and girls, their journey, bickering, push and pulls, misunderstandings and reconciliation, like if you've seen kim rae won's 'cat on the roof' or lee min ho's personal taste, or park shin hye's 'flower boy next door', or lee min ki's 'really really like you', or a thank you- biscuit teacher star candy - master's sun etc etc.The original charm of boy meets girl or vice versa and their story that follows, are more endearing, and the effect is long lasting than the cute and pretty in picture dramas these days.

I didn't say you liked BOF I just said that "type" of shows. Maybe I failed at rephrasing your comment :(.

I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with liking BOF. It's not my type of shows "now" but I watched the whole dang show for some reason. I can't say I didn't get any enjoyment out of it.

I'm so over high school dramas. I'm enjoying the college setting and yes they could tone down the sex talk/references. Sometimes it's funny and sometimes it's so not.

0

I feel like the trouble with some of those dramas is that the things people do in them that seemed charming or swoonworthy to my younger self, are now completely off-putting to me as an older adult.

Like I cannot go through Personal Taste without a mental 'ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!' at the whole 'gay' theme, or at the heroine offering to act as a beard while we're expected to see that as her dong him a solid. I love the hell out of MiSa even now but it has disturbing and problematic portrayals of adopted children and adoption - something that would never fly today. Boys Over Flowers (and the original) have issues with sexual assault....and the list goes on.

But there are dramas that actively eschew those tropes, and they're better for it - School 2013 holds up well even today, Heard It Through the Grapevine deserves to go down in classic kdrama canon, Misaeng is an all-time great - there are SO many stories to be told that aren't centred on romance.

0

Honestly, I'm not a big fan of oversexualisation either and my favourite dramas are those with little to no romance - but I'd still take some consensual implied sex between consenting adults, way, WAY ahead of the repeated threats of sexual assault in Boys Over Flowers and the like.

KDrama is all about love, it seems tiresome to watch it all week, that's why I also watch Jdrama in the middle
this problem recently happens to me in another field,
I want to read novel about something but it seems like all novel that is famous always have love stories painted in the front,
I'd like to read some good stories that didn't focus on love,
maybe on the journey with a good small portion of love stories is okay
so can I get some recommendation here?
the last novel-like books I read is a light novel
- My teens romantic comedy SNAFU-
a novel about teens and their school life which is fun, funny and has very little romance despite has "romantic"word as the title

If you like fantasy novels, you can try Terry Pratchett- his Discworld series. they are funny and witty (very tongue in cheek and dry humour) and without an romantic focus.

My favourites are Fifth Elephant; Time; Going Postal...

As you can see Im a huge fan. haha.

This explains the different characters and which books they are featured in ;)

I introduced Oregairu to people on soompi just a week ago. It's one of my favoruites. Moonlight is right. There is just too much emphasis on boys in Age of Youth. I said this in episode recaps too.

People saying Kdramas show innocence and purity? I don't think kdramas can withstand J-doramas at all.

If you want some novel then join some book review platforms and if you want to target specific tags and genre there exist many Books Databases. Short Cut would be directly visiting any e-commerce platform and there you can find 1000's of results which suit your nature.

I knew I recognized Terry Pratchett's name! He and Neil Gaiman wrote "Good Omens", one of my favorite books. I also looooove Douglas Adams's works. The sarcasm drips off the page, what fun!

Only one that I can think of right now is 'The Lover's Dictionary' by David Levithan. It's a fiction/non fiction based on two people's experience in their relationship.I found it quite good and the concept is unique. Though you said your priority was not on love, but the different pov from each side made it an interesting read lol.

@Sancheezy - I assume you've read classic novels like Anne of Green Gables? Now that's a great example of a girls' novel that pays very little attention to romance, and is instead about the life and (mis)adventures of the heroine between the ages of 11 and 16 :)

Harry Potter is one of the best-known school series of our time and it also has relatively little romance, and that too only in the last couple of books - it focuses more on life-threatening adventures, friendship and family than anything else.

Maybe you've read them already but it's good to be reminded that there are novels out there that are not about romance. They're also quite light and easy to read.

Terry Pratchett's books are really, really funny. If you're interested in books about a younger heroine you should try The Wee Free Men - no romance at all, and it's all about a girl setting out to rescue her baby brother with the help of small blue men who like to drink, fight and steal things.

@Sancheezy--What about the love between two girl best friends?? I just finished reading book 2 of the Neopolitan Series by Elena Ferrante, and now am on book 3. The first novel is called, "My Brilliant Friend," and while it DOES have love between men and women in it, the central relationship focuses on the friendship between two women from their early early years onwards. It really is the best thing I've read in the longest time. And while the whole story spans 4 novels, it is unbelievably quick reading.

Another more light-hearted book to pick up is Neil Gaiman's "Neverwhere." It might not be his best novel (cos, arguably, he's written better), but it's very very readable, and has no romance whatsoever. Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman also co-wrote a hilarious book called, "Good Omens," that is chock-full of literary allusions and pokes fun at lots of things in life. I've read that one at least 3 times.

I've heard great things about "The Rosie Project," but I don't know what it's about.

Shameless self promotion. If you click on my name you will get to my romance novel I wrote for my daughter when she was a jr. in high school and reading "twilight." As her mom, I felt like I should read it so I could see what the attraction was--and I couldn't get past three chapters, (and I apologize to any and all twilight lovers.) I told her, "if a boy ever says, 'please tell your dad where we're going because I'm afraid of what I might do if he doesn't know where we are' and you DON'T tell your dad--you're a fool." So, any how. This is my teen romance novelette. And if you read my toons, you know it's not to be taken too seriously.

Most of my Reading Time lately has become Drama Time. So I've been doing my reading via audio books while driving or doing mindless tasks. Scrolling through my Audible account, here are some books I have enjoyed recently that are not romances:

The Winter People by Jennifer McMahon. Really creepy story about grief and the bad things that can happen when you bring the dead back to life.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. Real magicians competing against the backdrop of the most fabulous circus, told with beautiful prose.

To Kill a Mockingbird Bird by Harper Lee. Classic about a precocious little girl going up in the American south in the 1930s. And her awesome dad.

American Gods by Neil Gaiman. All of the gods of the old world came to America with the immigrants who believed in them, but now are losing their power as people no longer believe. Not as innocent as the other recs.

Bricking It by Nick Spalding. Trials and tribulations restoring an old Victorian farmhouse.

Book Scavenger by Jennifer Chambliss Bergman. Middleschool kids solving book mysteries. Lots of fun.

Don't know if any of those would be your cup of tea, but I enjoyed all of them enough to recommend. Happy hunting!

Agreed! Especially female friendship ususally gets the very short end of the stick. Although there are exceptions - but yes, usually in dramas where the main relationship is a m/f romance.

In The Good Wife, though, I actually don't see sex / romance as central at all - the flirt with her old flame is merely another way for Hye-kyung to distance herself from her husband in my eyes. She even tells the guy outright that she isn't interested in dropping everything for love, and that she has other priorities and concerns.

Still, yes, you're right that the theme is definitely expected and necessary, and the drama likely wouldn't have been made without it.

Ode to Joy which is basically the Chinese version of Age of Youth is less sex orientated. It's a flawed drama in many ways and I think Western viewers would have difficulty stomaching the sexist attitudes presented on the show. But I actually related to the the girls' friendship, aspirations and struggles with career a lot more than with Age of Youth.

Something I've noticed since I've started watching modern Chinese dramas, is that there's a huge emphasis on the heroine's work progression. Like the general qualifier for being a leading lady in kdramas is having a heart of gold- in chinese dramas it's that she's a hardworker. I was watching a drama and they pulled the 'Oh I'm not good enough for you compared to your other sophisticated love interest' trope, and the solution was for the main actress to get her CPA certification. I'm like err, I'm pretty sure love doesn't work that way, but okay.

I'm not overwhelmingly impressed with most modern Chinese Dramas. I've watched several of them now and the only ones I really enjoyed were My Amazing Boyfriend and of course Love Me if You Dare. The rest I have ended up fast forwarding through. They really seem to have a formula that goes beyond even the most stereotypical Korean Drama (The Taiwanese ones seem to be a hybrid of the two).

Typically, the second male lead is a long term friend of the female lead that has never gotten things on a romantic track with her, but wants to. He's right there when the heroine loses faith in the hero, ready to drive a further wedge between them "for her own good" because he "loves" her so much.

Typically there is a younger step-sister or family friend of the male lead who is in love with him, only he sees her as a little sister or friend. She's all sweet and innocent on the outside but a wicked schemer on the inside.

The heroine also typically has a more sophisticated best friend who is a bit of a loose woman.

The "big separation" between hero and heroine seems to typically take much longer to resolve in a Chinese drama (and sometimes this is where the heroine gets real serious about becoming successful in her career). I don't think Korean audiences would have the patience to endure 4-6 (or more) episodes of separations.

For some reason, the producers of the Chinese shows like to show shots of their characters talking in the beginning and ending credits (of course, the viewer doesn't hear what they are saying because the theme music is running).

And since the shows are pre-filmed those opening/closing montages use scenes from all through the show, and tend to give away a lot of little plot spoilers, if you're really looking closely.

One thing that really has surprised me, is just how materialistic these shows are. I'm not just talking product placement, but the whole idea of being wealthy or becoming wealthy. A little like Dynasty was wish-fulfillment fantasy for Americans in the 1980s. My jaw dropped during a scene in "My Amazing Boyfriend" where the female lead teases her best friend because her BF's boyfriend is a "wicked Capitalist" - she's actually teasing her friend and fishing for some investing tips.

@LizJ--Great observations, these! I also noticed that the heroine usually has a very sophisticated best friend...and this isn't confined to C-dramas only, but T-dramas, J-dramas, and K-dramas all have this "trope" (?).

I wrote a little earlier that I've been reading a novel about best friends by Elena Ferrante, and the interesting thing is that the pseudo-rivalry between the two main characters involves both girls being slightly envious of each other, influencing each other's decisions, even "bettering" themselves as a result of their mutual envy..

And yet the heroines in most Asian dramas don't seem to be able to learn anything from their sophisticated best-friend counterparts...such as, dressing better (or more similarly to their best friend), or learning to be less vulnerable/subject to manipulation, etc. But really...aren't friends, when looked at from afar, more homogenous-looking, in general? Sophisticated, materialistic, brand-donning girls tend to hang out with one another, while more scholarly, nerdier girls hang with each other, and the religious/do-good/humanitarian ones with a cause hang with each other...yet in drama-land the pairings sometimes reflect this, but more often don't. UNLESS the drama shows bullying in school, where the girl gangs and boy gangs consist of like-minded, like-looking members. But by the time they reach adulthood, it's like apart from the rich wives who have their little exclusive bitchy club, the unmarried single women who are still lost (in the love game) will suddenly have friends who are their complete opposite: smart, sassy, slick women who don't appear to have any similarities with the heroines.

A'way, of course there are exceptions to the above.. I'm just relating my general impression of what the majority of shows seem to portray.

I'm more of a historical/costume Chinese drama fan, so I haven't seen that many modern Chinese dramas. Even with my limited exposure, I agree with you that many modern Chinese dramas are very formulaic, especially with romance, family, or revenge dramas. I'm not trying to accuse anyone, but I feel that modern Chinese dramas really tried to milk and intensify the typical romance formula after seeing how successful and popular it is in Korean dramas. As I recall, modern Chinese dramas back then were less romance focused and instead more family focused.

If you're interested in modern Chinese dramas that are less formulaic, I actually recommend trying modern Chinese web dramas. Similar to Korean cable dramas, I think that Chinese web dramas are more willing to explore different subjects and approach things differently than regular Chinese television dramas. This is probably because censorship for web dramas are not as strict, and production companies don't have to worry about pleasing the majority of viewers for ratings. Also, many of the Chinese Web dramas nowadays have very high production values, with some I feel even surpassing those of regular TV dramas. However, I must say most of these qualities belong to non-romance themed dramas, and there may be a certain level of cheesiness with non-serious dramas. Nonetheless, I think many Chinese web dramas (both modern and historical) are very entertaining, and I do suggest you to try them as something different.

Lastly, I actually really love the opening and ending sequences to Chinese dramas. Seeing little snippets and potential spoilers actually makes me a little more curious and want to continue watching a drama.....or maybe skip to the parts that are interesting for a drama that I don't want to continue lol.

Correct me if I am wrong but it always seemed to me that those long running K-dramas with high ratings that DB etc never cover are more to do with family stuff. K-movies aren't always about romance either. The shows that get covered for international auds are focussed on romance though and tbh I think audiences watch for the romance. Often when I read comments here it is as if other aspects of a show are lost in the huge focus on the main romance and the kissing. For K-dramas there is also a huge focus on the male actors at the expense of female actors.

The problem of making a show aimed at women that does not focus on romance is worldwide. Not just Korea. Even if a book for e.g. does not have romance its TV show version will. A huge part of this is because of audiences, I am sure writers are willing to be bolder but every focus group must be why don't you add romance! But I agree I wish shows weren't just about that. And also agree that the best bet is j-doramas since they are very varied in content and have subtle characterization.

I also get surprised at the too much sex comments. I work as a lawyer and the adult world is nowhere near the sanitised romances of dramas!!! If you are going for a realistic show aimed at a mature audience you have to have the sex. I admire actresses like JDY who are able to present a sexual woman in a frank manner without it ever being prurient. Or for that matter actors who can do it so that it is part of a character and not just sleaze.

also true! the movies arent always romance centered or it is presented through something very unusual feelings transmitted to inanimate objects. and I guess mostly women watch dramas in Korea and elsewhere... but that doesnt mean all women like romance ( I seemed to have asked alsmost the same question, in that how have the drama preferences changed and what we used to like vs what we like now. Romance can be there but I prefer a mission, a goal, something that is genuinly important, not just whether we can publish another edition of a magazine

@redfox yes I think it is changing and women want different things. Even if its not a mission or a goal the ordinary lives of women are no longer necessarily about finding a man. And I share your bewilderment at W having its heroine draw a......man?!

I don't mind romances per se. But I think the genre has just got old and predictable even though women seem to like it.

I think it's because her dad is a thriller manhwa artist. So she's exposed to male characters more.

All my classmates from elementary school who like to draw also started out by copying their favorite anime. So it's full of Dragonball Z, Ghost Fighter, etc. And when we got to high school, they were drawing the cool guys from the manga they're reading (and watching). Sadly, there is not a lot of heroines drawn as we grew up. I guess that's also because there aren't a lot of "cool" heroines in manga-land.

0

mary, I don't think it was drawing a man per se but that is seemed to follow watching a female shooter on TV!

@juniper agree, earlier people would get into K-drama and be open to all genres but now it is the latest hit/actor and associated works.

0

@Karuna, but in earlier episodes when her parents were fighting, she was hiding by the bookshelves, drawing a guy with a gun. :D So Chul might've been a work in progress and she's been updating his stats to match her other idols in life.

0

I see mary! I missed that.

Yes, trendies are so over represented in international fandom that it's actually sad. It's gotten to the point where casual fans will probably never discover classics of other genres, shows like Resurrection, for example.

Brilliant comment ,thank you so much for this insightful observation ,I'm in my late 20s and I clearly remember being very frustrated with this issue in my teens and early 20s . Not only Korean entertainment but also western entertain has perpetuated this idea that all young people( in their teens and twenties) are obsessed with sex and romance.

I agree and raise a hand in solidarity, Moonlight. I try hard not to be too prudish in my comments. I realize what I think is too blatant and not for me may be just what others enjoy. But there seems to be a dividing line between those of us who were drawn to K-Dramas because they were so much more innocent than Hollywood TV--and those of us who want K-Dramas to "get with the times! How can a 35 year old woman be a virgin? It's inconceivable!"
I agree with (sorry, I don't remember who it was) who said that you can always change the channel--and that cable is usually where more avant garde shows are aired.
I quit watching "the second time" because there seemed to be too much sex talk in the first episodes. But if you like it, I'm glad for you. (We, of differing opinions can co-exist here on dramabeans, right? Right?)

it is true and I have also complained about the lack of other forms of existence and the greatness of solitude. being alone (with your brain) has given us many authors, scientific discoveries and ideas... next to psychopaths and serial killers. but those are necessary too.
watch Squad 38! the romance is pushed way to the background, no one pines obsessively after a guy, everyone has their own life and goals and generally it is about trust and the will to do a good thing in life and just make a difference. it is so perfect without romance.

This is such an interesting topic because I've never thought about kdramas like that, meaning that with their strong emphasis on romance (in most of them) they convey a message to the audience that life without romance/partner is incomplete.

I agree that such media representations are harmful and that they don't begin and end only with kdrama, they're all over Hollywood, Bollywood etc. Heck, I've had my fair share of insecurities because of the social expectation to hook up: my mom wanted/s me to marry while some of my friends expected me to lead a fabulous single life. I found the latter even more troublesome, because it was kind of a double-edged sword: it was okay to be single, but I felt oddly pressured to be sexually active. I discovered only recently how much it affected my self-esteem which is funny, because I really really thought I didn't care. Talk about being in denial:)

As a genre, romance has romance and how much it has sexual content varies on where it's broadcast. Cable kdramas tend to be more explicit and I guess this is something we've all come to expect. The problem lies with dramas that are of mixed genre and Age of Youth is a great example of it. I noticed on the recaps' comment sections how some people found some character's actions uncomfortable while for others it seemed slice of life and thus refreshing.

As "slice of life" means different things to different people, it's not a great argument in of itself, but I found the divide between different opinions stronger precisely because the show's overall feel is "slice of life": the heroines aren't your typical unrealistic Candys but college girls. Most of the stuff that happens on screen is very low-key and everyday - beanies can relate to a whole lot of it, which is why, I think, the criticism hits closer to home whatever side you're on.

I actually agree with the thought that whenever sisterhood is depicted, it would be nice if the talk wouldn't revolve only around boys and relationships, I do think so, but when it comes to kdramas I turn a blind eye to it (!), because this is pretty much the only reason why I watch kdramas - the romance. They have a certain knack for it, which I enjoy, so I simply don't see the obvious flaws in AoY as I like it as a chick flick (+ alfa, heh).

Still, I understand the frustration: sex and boys are hardly only things in the minds of girls in their twenties and a more varied representations are definitely welcome. I think we have enough room:)

Yea, they do talk about sex rather a lot. And I agree that not all young people focus on that.

And I don't think the way they talk about it is excessive. To my knowledge, only Ji Won is rather obsessed about getting a boyfriend, and getting laid. The others take a different approach. Eun Jae, of course, sees everything about a relationship is new. Senior Yoon is rather busy with work, study and trying to ignore her mom's debt (and wanting her brother dies already). Ye Eun is, well -- she's also probably obsessed about the idea of having an ideal relationship. We don't know much about her character arc beside this. I wish the show can give her something (it's episode 7 already). The other girl (I can't remember her name) played by Hwayoung is not obsessed about sex, but uses it.

I rather see the talk on sex as a way of saying that it's okay if you (a girl like Ji Won and the rest of the casts) talk about sex or if you want it. It is not abnormal if a girl wants it. Because girls are often depicted as people without sexual desire, or that they should be on the passive side. And that boys are the ones obsessing over it, and it's totally fine. So, the show refutes this by doing that. The way I see it, the show is portraying different sides of growing up, and developing friendship at that. Even Ji Won who is constantly obsessing over sex/guys is portrayed positively at that. I mean, if she's that sad about being single, will she be jumping around happily, bursting with positive energy like that? Talking about sex is just one facet of hers.

But I understand your last point. Many k-drama (and drama from other countries) focus on a relationship. But as many other commenters before me already made a list, there are also many dramas that don't focus on that. You just have to look further.

so I am not dumb since I have been on Beans of Wisdom twice. Don´t trust IQ tests, but I can trust BoW, right?

since 38 TAsk Force /police unit / squad / team / Fellowship of the Con /the drama with 38 in it as it has become known ended, I have been watching bts and stuff and ... you know, I admire Seo In Guk as an actor a lot and his ability to transform himself, but since I am not keen on probing into the personal stuff about celebrities I didnt know his background till now... I just happened to watch a clip I didnt intend to and find out he´s had weight issues and even an eating disorder. Oh my god. this makes me anxious, since he does seem to have lost weight wince I Remember You, I hope it was just for the role of Jung Do. To keep things fair and balanced after finding out his personal detail I give mine: I have had an eating disorder too. it is a mind trap that is very hard to defeat and takes a very strong will power. Ingukkie, stay healthy, I will too. I sympathize with him even more now if that is possible.

see, that is why I dont usually probe... hard enough to live with your own secrets.

I have been hanging on to the hope of a season 2 but that hope grows thinner by every sceptical comment. and why is there a layer of sugar on my tabel (random note since I am writing in the dark and the table is sticky). and how the heck did it happen that after getting the carpet pulled from under my feet by this show so many times, I have, instead of learning my lesson and doubting juicy promises, I fall for them even harder and become more trusting? me, the queen of skeptics, mental twin to Fox Mulder?

Hey there! So sad to hear that W isn't your style, but that's okay -- it's a new idea, and not for everyone. :)

Just want to correct a misconception you have: the writer is a woman. Her name is Song Jae Jung, and she's known for her brilliant plotting. (She's written the dramas High Kick, Coffee House, Queen In-Hyun's Man, Nine, and Three Musketeers.)

Regarding Kang Cheol's creation: In episode five, we see Yeon Joo drawing him at a very young age while her parents are fighting, before she "officially" draws him up in high school as her ideal man. So there's probably much more to the story of his existence and creation than what's been revealed so far.

Yeah, and there's no shame in it not being to your taste! :)

I personally really LOVE some elements (the show's existentialism, the care taken with KC's psychology, the clever meta, the atmospheric creepiness), and don't really feel some others (I wish both of KC's shootings were given a bit more weight and consequence for him post-shooting. When he shot YJ -- I would've liked a more thorough discussion between them about what happened, and more time spent with YJ so we can see why she forgives him. Right now, I have to pretend he didn't actually shoot her in order to believe the romance. Although that convo and kiss outside the hospital DID move me -- it was so gentle, sad, and sweet!)

But for some others, they love the romance, and could do without the philosophical discussions between KC and his creator. What moves one person doesn't necessarily move all people. But that's what's great about personal taste! :)

You know, last night, I was thinking about Kang Chul's origin. Yeon Joo first drew a younger version of him when she was quite young. Someone had commented that it seemed strange that she would draw a boy with a guy. Given Korean gun laws and culture, it seems unlikely that she would have much exposure to guns.

What if Kang Chul and his world are not entirely creations of Yeon Joo and Writer Oh. What if they already existed in another dimension. Somehow, Yeon Joo as a child was able to access that dimension and either met or saw Kang Chul. Maybe the manhwa is more of a bridge to that dimesion rather than being that dimension. In some way, the manhwa influences that dimension, but does not define its entire existence.

Yes! That sound like a great way for the plot to go! One of the things I love about W is that I can't see where to plot is going, the downside is that it could be a huge disappointment.

@beanie, that's so true about Song Jae-jung. Just like with the writer of Bad Guys/PU38. I tend to trust them to explain things later so I'm not bothered if some things aren't answered right now.

I think if this is a different writer, I'd be throwing stuff at the screen and demanding explanations right now! LOL

continued message

they dont draw princesses cause they want to be one - they draw them because the princesses have the main part in the stories. though it may be different with teenagers... but teens are terrified of being found out, I doubt they would have a picture of a guy lieing around. this drama is trying to claim every female subconsciously dreams of a male savior or knight and a romance with him. Nope. every girl dreams of being self-sufficient. in general, there is too much chauvinism in W for my taste. obsession with marrying someone off by the end ( so marriage = happy end? oooh nopw what end) and mentalk in the back room without the girl knowing. dont like.

tried to watch bad guys, but I keep getting distracted.

QUESTION: has your drama preference changed over time? By how many degrees, is it a complete reversal? Is there a drama that you like now that you couldnt have imagined liking back in the day, and vice versa, is there a drama you liked immensely but either grew out of the style or genre or your horizons just broadened so much that you started seeing the flaws of something you used to worship?

I think my drama preference has always been a little tilted towards quirky comedy, dark thriller and action with a little bit romance, I used to not like sageuks at all (it was perhaps too odd, too new in my world, cause we dont really do historic dramas in such a manner here?), but now I can handle them. especially after Six Flying Dragons. Also I didnt mind the romantic clichés before, I could put them on repeat and rewind in secret, though I´d never admit it, but now these same scenes make me cringe. I would prefer no romance at all to scenes that are in every drama ever... just give me something new not what you think I would like.

I think my drama preference has indeed changed over time perhaps it's mostly due to age heh. Used to think romcoms/romance were my genre - started off with MNIKSS, Goong etc but it was only last year that I discovered my favourite genre turned out to be those suspense kind, like Pride and Prejudice. I think if shows like Doctors were aired about two years ago I might have chosen to watch it as soon as it aired.

At least I hope that every girl has a chance to dream of being self sufficient.

drama preference : I really liked Beautiful Gong Shim because, for one thing, the second male lead was a normal, decent, chaebol (I don't have anything against cheabols just for being one). My first encounter with chaebols (read: BoF and FLBS, CH) I thought it was an entertaining aspect of kdramas with those cold, rich, spoiled, privileged, bad-tempered second generation conglomerate heirs treating others badly because of who they were born and found personality redemption (sometimes) in the right poor girl (Candy). But when I think about it, if feels so dated and cave world even though it might represent SK's economic rise in the 21st century and now when I see that stereotype in a kdrama I'm bored, annoyed, and disappointed. That's why I loved BGS so much - oh, and the fact that Shim's hair wasn't this huge looks issue - loved that too. A lot.

Although I have to throw in the RL female chaebol with the peanut/airlines incident that gave chaebols everywhere a bad name...kdrama, anyone? heh

I don't think my taste has changed. I've been about romcoms for as long as I can remember, i.e. Janeite (Jane Austen fan)
But I do think my genre scope has become wider. I realize now that there's more than the 3-5 genres I thought of when I was a child. Now there's more and unique mixes of genres.
Some of my favorites aren't perfect romcoms and some are.
I think I'm growing in giving the genres I never knew about a chance. Unless it's straight up horror, I tend to like well written stories.

Thought provoking question. Thank you!

Me! My drama preference definitely changed a lot.

I used to love fluffy romantic comedies (I still do btw) but now I want one that has more substance and is more thought-provoking with complex characters. If I were younger, I would def have watched DOTs or Doctors.

I also rarely watched dramas that had no romance but now I find myself more interested in them (Misaeng, Signal, Vampire Prosecutor, etc)

I still hate melodramas though. I hated any drama that made me cry, BUT now I'm ok with them so long as no one is ill cos I still can't abide melodramas with terminal illnesses, so I never watch them

@redfox--Suddenly, I know the definition of devotion. Devotion = watching a drama 28 times or more!!! Hahaha... but your comment in response to Erratic's comment made me wonder if you meant "28 times" as a joke, too?

My confession is that since I was a teen until perhaps college, I must have watched the 1980s Cantonese kungfu drama series, "Return of the Condor Heroes," starring Andy Lau and Idy Chan, over 30 times at least.. And just so you know, it is probably 3-4 times longer than a Kdrama.. my guess is 50+ episodes.

The copy I first owned was in VHS tapes, then later VCD, and now (finally) I own it on DVD. HAha... It was my absolute favorite drama to watch and I could even recite different characters's lines.

That LJS article isn't true at all. No YG manager has quit because of LJS. LJS got assigned one YG manager since the beginning and he is still working by him. We know because the manager is on instagram and even thanked and praised LJS. And the rest of LJS's staff has been same for over 5 years. He brought all the old staff when he came to YG so he doesn't need their people. YG has nothing to do with LJS's drama fashion. It's done by GIANT stylist team who works exclusively with LJS. So everything in the article is bullshit. It's written to attack LJS and korean fans have been trying to get YG to sue the reporter.

Italian BMT. 6-inch. Honey Oat. Swiss Cheese. Toasted. I would like Lettuce, tomatoes, green pepper, and mayonnaise with that.

And yes, I would like to make it a combo please. Grabs Lay's oven baked chips.

That would be how much?

I used to work there, so the smell of the bread makes me gag now.

Back in the day my signature sandwich was a veggie patty on the honey breads, with sweet chilli sauce BEFORE toasting so it was caramelised, finished off with all the salad (no tomatoes or olives, ick) and then honey mustard sauce.

No, of course I couldn't close it. I split it between my siblings and I during my break or after my shift.

But those cookies - man, they were the reason I learnt how to bake! Spent too much of my wage on them...or just ate the broken ones....after breaking them ._.

Don't really like Subway all that much but if I go I get a veggie sub with everything plus jalapenos and lots of mayo. I love mayo. After I saw Reply 88 I made bibimbap with mayo and green chile and it was delicious.

Tuna footlong with an italian herbs and cheese bread for me. Touch it up with some honey mustard and vinegar along with some veggies and you have a delicious sandwich. A little hot cheetos as a side as well, because why not.

I used to think it was the BMT but I had one recently and realized I like it a lot less than Jimmy John's italian sub. I used to like the seafood (fake crab) but I think they've dropped it, so that leaves me the veggie delight with everything except jalapenos on italian herbs & cheese bread. I get that sometimes when I feel like I need a salad & bread.

Subway can be very high sodium though. (All subs are). For every 6" of bread OR meat, it's at least 500 milligrams. A footlong turkey on whole wheat is 2000 milligrams and that's before cheese, pickles, olives, or dressings.

Sad I didn't get my second fix of W this week but at least they didn't leave us hanging on a crazy clifhanger.

Uncontrollably Fond - episode 12 is just what I've been waiting for with this show. Finally the secrets are coming out! Woo hoo. Suzy was brilliant this episode (and I cringed at the drunken 'acting' a few eps ago). She had me in tears, sobbing in front of that door, right along with her. I can't wait for next week!

I'm excited to be seeing Park So Dam on my screens tomorrow. I love a reverse harem and these guys are gorgeous.

August 20th will release the second part of my newest BL obsession Uncontrolled Love. It's gonna be amaaaazzzzinnng. Believe it.

Can't wait for Korean Scarlet Heart and Moonlight with PBG.

I feel like this year has been a gift from the gods.

Happy OT
didn't watch much drama besides the obligatory fan
W- two world
and
99 days with the Superstar (Boku to Star no 99 Nichi)
starred Kim Tae Hae and Hidetoshi Nishijima (kyaaa),
and this time, the PPL work greatly to me,
I saw the Puung books like last week in the bookstore and have no intention to bought it but now after watching W ep 7, I was like
"hey I got my reason" the I bought it
[the pic] http://i.imgur.com/1ddZ4Ib.jpg
I also trying to draw Kang Chul in some spare time, over lunch,
even if it didn't really look like him but yeah W give me a lot of fun
[the pic] http://i.imgur.com/8NnuMDO.jpg

for (Boku to Star no 99 Nichi)
this is really cute and I have to say that they make KTH looked super pretty, not the Korean pretty with her glowing skin but pretty with very little makeup possible,
it just like she is really looked that way without makeup,
and her acting is really good and fitted the theme,
the drama is funny and they have an adorable bromance, just watch till ep 3 and I damn sure will finish it.

Oh. No song? Thanks for the post DB Staff. The description for OT is appreciated ?

Question: have you ever had a drama themed dream?
Me: all I know is Jang Hyuk, Lee Jong Suk, Park Shin Hye, Kim Woo Bin, Suzy, Seo In Guk, Kang Min Hyuk were in a giant building. And people wanted medical attention. I'm not sure who from.

Week catch up:
Done with work. Two weeks off until classes start. I'll be helping eonnie with the baby, cleaning, planning and drama watching. Still have medical things to take care of. Ugh, phone calls.
I'll be blogging all week. I'm feeling about a 3? Maybe 4. The anxiety dreams are growing in strength.

New phone wallpaper: https://t.co/WAj1dsemfc
My baby looks amazing! All the shows I've seen him in, only missing one supernatural drama that didn't interest me.

Korean:
Doctors – why did I have to catch up the week that my baby Kim Minsuk got sick?
Uncontrollably Fond - next ep 5. I'm in. Woob makes up for Suzy Bae. He might be becoming my acting bias again. Like whoa, he just lights up my screen. Not loving the use of the Ims.
W - next ep 8, still trying to process everything and reply to the comments.
TF38 – on ep 12 What is happening?!
The "fight" had me doubled over laughing. I've seen 2nd graders fight better.
Age of Youth - dropped on ep 3
Cinderella and the Four Knights - ep 1 tonight

Japanese:
Nodame Cantabile – next ep 7 *still no progress*
Love Live Sunshine – next ep 7, a slow and cheerful show
Itazura na Kiss (1996) – next ep 4 *still no progress*
Orange - next ep 5, this show is incredibly melancholy and makes me anxious yet happy. I still want my ship to survive, but I hope my bae makes it through school. I think the worst thing about this show is there is no preview ?

Taiwanese:
Fall in Love with Me - on ep 3, this show is fun. Aarons looks amazing.

Western:
Girl Meets World – next S 3 ep 9 airs tonight. Joshaya for life!

Reading:
The Way People Live: Life in Genghis Khan's Mongolia by Robert Taylor.
Sakamoto: chapter 2

Have a good day!

Doctors - Noooo! How dare they go there! A pox on them! I am looking forward to Hye Jung's plan to take on Seo Woo's Dad. I really hope Seo Woo continues to throw shade at her Dad. It's the coolest she's ever been.

I tend to be pretty hit or miss with the Taiwanese dramas but I do really like Aaron Yan. I really enjoyed Just You, despite the apparent mental illness of the second female lead (why does everyone just accept rich girl crazyness?).

Doctors - I am enjoying Seo Woo's redemption arc. I hope she continues to tell her dad the facts. She's the only person that affects him it seems. Even if he refuses to get it, her words still bother him.

I've only watched a few but Taiwanese dramas are very different. I'm not sure what my opinion is exactly but it makes the time before bed pass quickly and the language is beautiful. The stories are a bit more fantastically.
This is my first Aaron Yan drama. I'm falling for him *no pun intended*
I know I don't have to decide between the for Fahrenheit members but now I'm wondering if my bias is him or Jiro. All I can do is keep watching to find out ?

Required fields are marked *

Aaron Yan is hot! Just You was great but I couldn't stomach Tia Lee's expressionless face in Fall in Love With Me.

Episode 16 totally turned me off Doctors, and not because of what happened to Puppy Minsuk. All of the doctors are either incompetent or immature or unconscionable! Drove me batty with how ridiculous everyone was acting, except for Yoon Do, but he wasn't enough to save the drama for me.

But I think the writer has something against puppies because Ji Soo got flung off a motorbike with a broken neck, and now MinSuk gets a brain tumour and seizures. She can't leave the puppies alone!

Aaron Yan had me from the first Clark Kent-ing moment. A man that can rock both looks is golden. I haven't seen Just You. The Viki comments make me think it may be superior to the one I'm watching but I'd already started so, shrug. I don't mind Tai Lee. I don't really watch her while she acts, though. I look at other parts of the scene.
And I only watch after I've taken my Ambien so it's not analytical watching.

Yes, I was so annoyed by the hand off. I don't think it's Seo Woo's fault like most viki commentors. I think the entire department should be to blame. They should fix the system rather than chasing after Hye Jung.
Otherwise, the doctors kinda of cracke up because they are decent to good at their jobs but not at being people. I think the writers took the healing drama aspect too far and want to show everyone growing. Yoon Do still has his immature moments to me, like the whole feeding the residents competition he started on his own.
It's like a preschool that spends recess saving lives.

I wish we could save the puppies. But from a fan point of view, I'm very happy for Jisoo and Minsuk.

well, considering on how long you stuck in eps 4/5 of nodame, getting through ep 7 is considered progress!!

finally (with a lot of effort) I manage to finish Sakamoto manga. now I'm sure I will not even try to watch the anime. it's just that he's too "cool" (yeah, he's the "coolest"!) to the point that I was frozen with my jaw touching the floor. and here I can even re-watch the whole eps of Princess Princess D drama (live action with Takeru Sato)!

as for which ever ship are you on Orange, the ending may give you some short of bittersweet feeling. I only read the manga, haven't watch the anime nor live action movie, but the last chapter made me cry even in my third re-read session. I won't spoil you, have fun and enjoy the journey :)

Lol, I promise I'm not going to make up an excuse every week. But I think I finally figured out why I'm having trouble with Nodame Cantabile.

I rushed through the anime all 3 seasons from 14 October 2014 - 18 October 2014. That's the most I've ever binged watched. Then, I watched Tomorrow Cantabile live.

I've been watching the Japanese at least since DotS was on *my TV tracking system is strange*. It may have even been last year that I started it. I think I'm watching it so slowly because I want to savor the fun of the orchestra and Chiaki/Nodame.

I wonder when I'll ever finish ?

Sakamoto is such a fun play on the megane archetype. There's an Internet post, I believe it started on tumblr, asking for a silent glasses foreign character everyone thinks is all of but in the final episode we find out they just don't understand Japanese. I doubt we'll ever get that story, but Sakamoto made me think of that.
Different tastes I guess.

I don't want to tempt spoilers so I'll simply say my ship cares deeply about each other. I think I'm going to have a bittersweet feeling at the end just because it's over. But I am getting more excited about watching animes and then reading the manga so I have something to look forward to.

well, whenever I re-watch nodame live action (drama, SP, or movie version), most of the time I only rewatch the S-Ok or RS-Ok or every nodame's or chiaki's performance. I love classical pieces before, and I love it even more after watch nodame. jdorama really go all out on that, from how they "play" instrument to music editing. I'm happy they feature Tchaikovsky, especially Violin concerto in D major and Overture 1812. I'm sorry to say that in this departement, k-version doesn't stand a chance, I blame live-shooting schedule for this so they don't have enough time to practice nor edit it properly.

about Sakamoto, my friend keep bugging me to give it chance since she know that I have megane fetish. boys with glasses mostly always attract me in every manga (plus point most of the time they always been potrayed as compose and collected), even when they are just supporting character. but as I mention before, sakamoto is too cool, I was frozen!

Whoops also, P.S:

Obviously, this is all just my opinion though, and I can totally understand and respect someone having a different thought.

Also double P.S: I realise I didn't mention the Korean and Thailand adaptations, but this is because both of them made a lot of changes so they felt more like an 'inspired by' rather than 'based on' feel which I don't really count as an adaptation, yknow?

(Especially the Thailand adaptation, man wow, I couldn't even get past the first episode because when the Thailand version of Naoki said "I never lie" I just LOST IT, dramatically waving my hands at the laptop monitor and shrieking "What do you mean you never lie?! LYING IS WHO NAOKI IS. HE IS A LYING LIAR WHO LIES ABOUT HIS FEELINGS. WHAT KIND OF CHARACTER ASSASSINATION IS THIS.")

oH MY DAYS BE CAREFUL -- ahem. sorry. I didn't mean to shout lol, I was just skimming and 'saw Itazura na Kisu 1996' and it was like the world going into black and white slow motion right before a car crash. My reaction's out of my hands X'D

Anyway, basically just wanted to give you a fair warning: if you're a fan of the original manga (like my poor naive innocent self was), the 1996 drama adaptation REALLY changes things around. Tbh I barely even remember most of the changes, what really sticks out in my memory is just that numb feeling of horror I had after finishing it and spluttering 'THIS is the only live action adaptation they made?!' (which, at that point in time, it was lol)

So yeah, fair warning given. If you're looking for something that's a little closer to the manga's story, then I strongly recommend the Taiwanese adaptation, 'It Started With a Kiss'. The other jdrama adaptation, Love in Tokyo, is okayyyyyy but skipped some things/added unnecessary things, and frankly I feel the two leads just...lacked some chemistry. They were still good together tho! But just, not Ariel Lin and Joe Cheng good lol. I mean obvs it being an adaptation, the Taiwanese adaptation is not 100% the same either, but it changed very little compared to the other adaptations, the writing was much better, and the leads, I feel, had very strong chemistry.

But yes. Shutting up now. Sorry for the disturbance ^^;;

(in my defence I have a very special place in my heart for Itazura na kisu so I tend to overreact when it's brought up... X'D sorry again)

Lol, no problem. I was a little confused by P.S on CatoCat's comment.

I appreciate the concern about viewing the 1996 INK. It makes me think of my reaction to the 1940 Pride & Prejudice.

I knew going into the original jdrama that it wasn't very good. I haven't read the manga but I watched the anime first.

ISwaK is the most faithful adaptation. I loved the 2013 and the leads chemistry but it was mainly my new found bae Furukawa Yuki. The Korean was my second version. Oh Ha Ni was the best part for me.

The Thai version is my personal favorite. It was "inspired by". The change I appreciated the most was the fact that they knew each other as children. It made so much more sense to me. But I can see what you mean about the Naoki/Tenten lying thing. Imo, it speaks to the true character. Naoki doesn't know he lies. He believes he doesn't and it makes sense that 17-19 year old him would say that. He barely believes he lies or has feelings for her when literally everyone tells him he does.

That's just my opinion based on my understanding of the anime. Thanks for the thorough comment ?

I'm glad you knew! The worst thing for me is going into a drama expecting stars and fireworks only to get weak fizzling embers, so super relieved to hear there's no disappointment. (That said obvs I also hope that you enjoy your watch. I mean who knows, I was pretty young at the time I watched the jdrama adaptation, so maybe it's much better than I remember it to be.)

The anime is /adorable/ and I feel the best media outside the manga since it includes the ending that was originally planned out by the mangaka (as relayed to the anime studio by her husband) so it really feels like a full-circle experience.

Also wow, I'm really glad to hear your thoughts about the Thailand version! It makes me want to give it a second shot, since I just noped out without giving my usual 4-episode-test-run.

And your opinion totally makes sense! Tbh, there are so many ways to interpret Naoki's actions since he's such a complex character, and that's why it's a lot of fun for me to hear other's opinions since it opens up my own view of him. And even that changes a lot tbh lol, because every single time I rewatch/reread InK in any form, I always find myself wondering and reevaluating just how aware he is of his own feelings.

Like, sometimes he feels very aware, like sneaking that second kiss, his whole 'oh I just happened to come home early and buy cake that's your favourite flavour total coincedence', and then the whopping big lie of 'yes I like this total stranger in this arranged marriage'. But other times, like you said, he's just in this murky swamp of denial/obliviousness where he has absolutely no idea why he's doing what he's doing, with the best example being the whole post-marriage jealousy debacle when he was lashing out while honestly not having the slightest clue why.

Naoki's such a good character honestly, in the sense that he's so contradictory just like real people are. Which is also probably why I'm so attached lol.

Annnnnnnd sorry again this reply got much longer than I'd intended it to be haha. InK's just got a really special place in my heart, really. I mean like, even though I feel like Love in Tokyo wasn't as good an adaptation as ISwaK, I still loved it a lot and ended up straight up CRYING out of pure fangirl nostalgia when I was watching it because I was so overwhelmed with my memories of just how much I loved those characters and their story.

So yes, my apologies for the word tidal wave of unbearable length, I'll stop now. ^^;;;; Thanks so much for replying and sharing your opinion as well!

1) Did you all hear about SM’s strategic alliance with KeyEAST? Apparently they will have access to each other’s resources and idols/actors. What do you think this means? It was announced a few hours ago. SM's been trying to take over the drama world for quite some time now since they already hold scary influence in the idol world (remember JYJ?)

2) LeeJongSuk is being personally managed by YG’s CEO and LJS is apparently pissed about the management. Again, thoughts?

haha, my comment also waiting for moderation for the link, IDK if it will get through

1) I don't really follow the SM as the big bully in the entertainment world but they've been trying to be big.
in regards to JYJ, it's not helping that the JYJ member themselves didn't paint a good image,
for me, it's the management, it's the business world and it's like the sky, we didn't know if we just look it from afar,
but I see them changing throughout the year,
I actually give some respect for SM C&C when they signed many named with scandal , like kang ho dong, shin dong yup and lee soo geun, they give their artist work

2) YG management is always messy, it always been like that and sad to know they still not improve

LJS needs to be careful, people might think he thinks he is more important than YGE. No matter what, it's a really important company with a big name and, I don't know, he should be more thankful to them, I guess? He was a free agent for some months, right? A little unprofessional of him to complain so early.

0

Required fields are marked *

But he was a free agent for a few months, by completely his own choice. He was the one to leave his previous agency, and he was being picky about signing with a new one because he's had bad experiences with his previous one in regards to how they promote him, and now that's exactly what seems to be happening with YG. When you're told you'll be sold a particular deal and they change the order after you've paid your due, it's bound to piss you off.

0

Required fields are marked *

I don't know how good his old company was and how well they promoted or didn't promote him. The way I see it he is a hard worker anyway and is more recognized for his talent since his looks are mainly subjective. He could have joined any company and doesn't need YG's name. I mean people and I am still weirded out by the fact that he's a part of YG now. So if they can't compromise tbh LJS can move on. It's a shame if his image takes a hit from a feud with a company that has contributed little to his current popularity.

'W' = this weeks episode 7 was cute as heck, despite the turn at the end. I would vote all of the above, but I would also like to buy that book. It looked adorable and how handy would it be to give to your ideal man. Let's do page 137?

Watching Second to Last Love and I'm hooked. I don't know what it is, the main female lead is just on the other side of awful for me, which would usually mean I'd be turned off. But there's something about her that I just love. I love the male lead and his family (how great are they?). I'm looking forward to this one.

Bring it On, Ghost/Let's Fight, Ghost is absolutely killing it. It's got the right mix of everything (though I must admit the Soondae Sausage boys are hit or miss for me) humor, romance, horror, sci-fi, mystery. I love the emerging bad guy back story and the Hyun Ji developments. Acting is superb. Love it.

Pretty awesome morning! Two amazing Black girls doing their thing right now and they are both named Simone!

This week has been slow! I work from home and my phone line has been down since Saturday. I was finally able to go back to work yesterday. And since there was only one episode of W this week, my excitement level has dwindled. Haha.

I have been on a Lee Jong Suk rampage! I have watched pretty much all of his dramas. Including Dr. Stranger. Surprisingly, I made it to the end which after episode 9, I didn't think I would. It wasn't the greatest show ever but eh...

Has anyone watched Second to Last Love? I've been thinking about starting that.

Anyone watching Ice Fantasy? I have been watching it a bit. It's not bad. I like it so far but I think my favorite c-drama will forever be Nirvana in Fire though. I still think about that show!

Second to Last Love is quite exaggerated – very shouty. The leads seem to want to assume to worst of each other, but to be honest, I don't mind them so much – once they fall for each other, it'll be fun (because I'm sure they'll be in denial/refuse to admit their affection).

What I do mind is all their co-workers (of both leads), they are all portrayed as lazier than lazy and some of them as if they have NO brain or human heart (you do not just casually wave off that you nearly got someone killed because you're a total slacker at what you do). I'm on the third episode, but I'm not sure how much more I can take of all these infuriating side characters.

Probably it's because 'Our Gap Soon' is a weekend drama? I think there are many people who are excited about it but they prefer to lurk here instead of commenting. I personally feel the excitement is unintentionally a bit toned down because the waiting game is too long ( I'm that impatient, and kinda get drawn to other dramas airing atm lol)

Happy OT
didn’t watch much drama besides the obligatory fan
W- two world
and
99 days with the Superstar (Boku to Star no 99 Nichi) starred Kim Tae Hae and Hidetoshi Nishijima (kyaaa),
and this time, the PPL work greatly to me,
I saw the Puung books like last week in the bookstore and have no intention to bought it but now after watching W ep 7, I was like
“hey I got my reason” the I bought it
[the pic]
I also trying to draw Kang Chul in some spare time, over lunch,
even if it didn’t really look like him but yeah W give me a lot of fun
[the pic]

for (Boku to Star no 99 Nichi)
this is really cute and I have to say that they make KTH looked super pretty, not the Korean pretty with her glowing skin but pretty with very little makeup possible,
it just like she is really looked that way without makeup,
and her acting is really good and fitted the theme,
the drama is funny and they have an adorable bromance, just watch till ep 3 and I damn sure will finish it.

Happy Friday Beanies!

W is keeping me happy nowadays, and before Epi 7 I was in a semi drama slump. For some reason Doctors really rubbed me the wrong way for the last episode plus Hapi Mari suddenly has stopped being subbed for 3 weeks *WHY??* and I was really moody until W came along. I think it is scary how dramas totally affect my mood now- a good drama and I'm super chirpy, a bad one and I'm snapping at everyone.

I rewatched Splish Splash Love and it was great, and now I'm SO READY for Moonlight and Park Bo Gum.

Also started Age of Youth and I am a bit puzzled by the whole "ghost" angle, but I am enjoying the ups and downs for the girls lives and will probably be continuing the show.

I tried Tree with Deep Roots but I think I need to be in a different mood and then try it again.

Any suggestions of light hearted or feel good stuff to watch till W and Moonlight come?

A couple of years ago our tv provider gave us a korean tv station, and I watched Queen Inyun's Man, but I missed the first few (?) episodes. So I know how it ended, but not how it began. I saw from my Facebook throwback that I finished watching I Remember You on this date last year. Man, such a tight drama that was. And Bo gummy was a revelation.

Also, because of that unusual moment of clarity regarding feelings in W, I found myself reminded of Bang Won and Boon Yi and that totally unromantic, totally effective confession scene. Then I found myself scouring Dramabeans for recaps of Six Flying Dragons. And then found myself weeping again while reading the comments on the final episodes.

I may love W and be excited with all the pomp and circumstance, but Six Flying Dragons moved me like no other K-drama did. And I've seen a lot of K-dramas since 2004.

@Erratic--[SPOILER ALERT] Yeah, I think upon that Six Flying Dragons confession scene a lot, but then as I was writing my reply to you, I realized I wasn't thinking of the confession scene at all!!! Haha...I actually had in mind the scene where Bang Won tells Boon Yi that effectively 'it's over' between them, in the snow. I swear the message being conveyed was so effective precisely because of the unexpected delivery of those lines.. Very moving.

Their relationship was something special, no doubt, but I still found Boon Yi to be too reserved with her emotions--whether due to character, or the acting. I remember being more moved when Bang Won had to finish off his loved ones towards the very end. Heart-wrenching stuff.

I was very moved by the relationship between the leads in "Oh Hae-Young Again".. If you haven't watched it, I strongly recommend.

Happy Friday, everyone!

Just a short note about something that struck me last night, when I was watching The Good Wife ep8:

I think that the husband in the Korean version is an outright criminal (as opposed to the "merely" unfaithful and corrupt US version) because this is the only way to allow Hye-kyung to leave him and/or start an affair with another man without becoming unsympathetic to the viewers. In the US version, Alicia is shown to have plenty of reason simply because her husband cheated on her, lied to her and humiliated her, but I think this wouldn't be enough in Korea. In Korea, he has to be a murderer before she is allowed to leave him without being judged harshly, especially because she has children with him.

I have to add that I am not Korean, and I could be wrong! It is just that so far, I have never yet seen a sympathetically drawn wife and mother actually leave her husband (if he was also the father of her child) in a kdrama. The expectation was always that she would have to forgive him and return, because he was the father of her child and there was no other way - even when to me, it was clear that she needed to get as far away from that man as she possibly could.

What you guys think?

0

Required fields are marked *

I think The good Wife K version want to make the love line possible since Idk the husband is too charismatic and on the US version, the husband is jut not worth it ?( okay a bit kidding there)
there's some stigma around it as I knew but in terms of Kdrama, the heroine Five Children divorce his husband out of cheating with her friend, even when she has 3 children but hasn't fallen to another man,
in the happy home, the heroine also used the cheating reason to divorce and she partially has a heart for another man but they had no children,

so I do agree that K-drama needs to make the move on or the divorce's reason to be very bad that you can't even forgive him when you have children and guy that care about you,

on the other drama, A Good Wife - T-Drama IMO paint marriage and divorce through a better light, it's not about the cheating or some heinous crime, it just life has its own way and we need to make the decision that makes us happy

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I think it is true that in order to remain sympathetic, the wife has to be relatively blameless and the cheating husband has to seek the divorce. In Five Children and Hooray for Love it is the husbands wanting the divorce. The only instances where the wives tolerated cheating were in Charbol marriages were they accepted the money and position trade off for fidelity. These weren't main characters though.
Divorce and child custody laws seem to be pretty brutal for women in Asian countries. The males have all the power of custody and financial settlements. So disturbing that there isn't join custody and one parent must abandon their child. The attitude towards stepchildren is deplorable.

Required fields are marked *

Kbas, going by the kdramas I have seen, this was also my impression - that it's the cheating husband who has to leave in order for the woman to remain sympathetic.

Sancheesy, I didn't know there was also a tdrama version of the Good Wife! It sounds like something I would agree with - sometimes even a relationship that hasn't suffered through cheating or crime simply doesn't work anymore, and sometimes choosing to part ways really is best for everyone.

But of course when it comes to dramas, it is more dramatic to have murderers and mind-sucking aliens and secret vampires all over the place. ;-)

Required fields are marked *

I think there are some kdrama wives who leave their husbands without being typecast as the unsympathetic one, off my head I can only think of W two worlds- Yeon Joo's mom left with Yeon Joo and her dad (as far as we know) didn't cheat on her or do anything illegal, and it looked fairly amicable (as amicable as a divorce with a kid can be), and thus far I don't see a reunion on the horizon.

However I do agree that culturally the asian culture tends to frown upon divorce more in general, which to me is not necessarily a bad thing. Granted, the dramas have used this in its extremes when a wife doesn't leave an abusive/crazy husband and his family, which is obviously wrong as well. But I do not like the way that nowadays marriage is often treated lightly and divorce considered to be a easy option, whether there be kids or not.

I haven't watch either version of The Good Wife, but this is just my 2 cents. :)

I have not watched original, so I can't say anything about American version. But in this show Hye-kyung(and all women in this show) is so confident that she gives out vibe not common from typical Korean women shown in typical Kdramas. So who knows- she could cut ties from him unlike a wife in other shows. This is remake of American show after all.

Divorce in Korea is considered an unsavoury past. You'll hear in conversations between men and women in real life and ask if you have a past. To anyone at home (Australia), you'll think criminal past and stuff. But in Korea, that past (is more of an euphemism, yes, they found a need for euphemism) for the divorced. Somehow, not being able to work out your marriage is considered a failure. It's worse if you're in politics. If you're in politics and you're getting a divorce, you're digging yourself a hole.
Anyone watched Knowing Bros (Ask Us Anything)? There are two members in there who are divorced and they constantly poked fun at them like a bad juju.
I love how they spin The Good Wife into their own here with the Korean culture and all. And they want Hye Kyung to be able to leave her husband (with the viewers supporting her) as Korean society in general is more like her Jaws-like mother-in-law. You know, be the bigger person and work on that marriage. Forget that he actually cheated, because you're a woman.

0

Required fields are marked *

Hmm, I'm not sure if they really did it to cater to the moral standards of Koreans because imo TGW's audience isn't your typical kdrama viewer (i.e. ajummas).
For example Secret Love Affair was relatively popular and critically acclaimed despite coming from JTBC, covering a very controversial topic and had a very art house feel.
And the husband in it wasn't anywhere as bad as Tae-joon, he didn't even cheat on his wife (I think he was actually asexual ?) or did very bad things. He was just a petty, self entitled man child with a huge inferiority complex, yet judging by the ratings people were still rooting for the affair because her life was pretty miserable in general and it was a loveless marriage, only kept up for appearances.

It's friday! :D
I am trying to finish most of my dramas before going back to school.

Airing
Doctors: Don't kill puppy Kangsoo. That's all I have to say now!
The Good Wife: SO GOOD! I am still mad about that voice mail! Although I do not agree with all of Hyekyung's decisions, I admire her and respect her. If it wasn't for the fact that she has Taejoon as a husband, I would want to be her. Can we talk about Joonho last episode? It was strange. On the one hand, a big part of me was happy that he lost his job because his cockiness was asking for it. But when it came to the moment he had to go in the office to hear the news, I was surprise that I wanted to spare him that pain. I hope he'll still be around. Also, I downloaded some of Jeon Doyeon's films to watch when TGW will be over. I can't believe there's only 3 weeks left!!
Uncontrollably Fond The mothers are both insane and although everyone and their cats know that Shin Joonyoung is assemblyman Choi's biological child, the later still managed to be the second to last one to know lol. Can't wait to see his reaction. It better be worth it.
W Last episode was funny (Han Hyojoo's wtf face is priceless) but sooo cheesy. Excited to see where they are going with that No Face Killer though!
Wanted I can't wait for this to be over.

Marathon-ing
Gochisousan The sister-in-law is an awful bitter old crow. At least the little sister is starting to gain confidence and is actually speaking up for herself (or rather she CAN speak :O )
Potato Star I picked it back up. How could I forget how much I love Hongberg and Jinah. One of the cutest OTP <3 (Although I feel like an hypocrite. I've been complaining about underage casting all summer and one of my favourite kdrama couple's actors are 7 years apart and Yeo Jingoo was barely 16 at the time :S )
Miss Korea Almost done. I won't say much about it because I know I'll just gush over the OST forever.

I finally watched the anime film The Girl who Leaps Through Time and it was really good. I was wondering if anyone has seen the jdrama that is airing right now? Is it good? How does it compare to the anime or the novel? Is it worth checking out when it is done airing?

Happy Friday. Anybody missing Police Unit 38? They have a special (11pm tonight Korean time) which includs NG, casts' comments etc.(Did you know it took hours filming Ma and Seo's fighting scene in the playground?) Sad it ended but I am excited to see Jung Il-woo in new drama. And there is 'Age of Youth' which I love. It had a press conference. [xSports News, OSEN]
This show features each of five leads' story every week. It began with the timid new college student Yoo Eun-jae(park Hye-soo), and continued with Jung Yae-eun(Han Seong-yeon of Idol group Kara), Kang Yi-Na(Ryu Hwa-young), Yoon Jin-myung(Han Ye-ri) and Song Ji-won(Park Eun-bin).

PD Lee said he was fascinated every time when he read the writer Park's script, and there was nothing that required him to get involved to make it better. "Currently all my attention falls on how to portray the scripts well, and how to make it in right way.. We've spent so much time and many episodes for character set up and development in the beginning. Other dramas pour in most energy in the beginning, and pull the rest of episodes with that power, but our drama offers character introduction and a key to secrets in the beginning, and evolves to search for the answers. I dare to say it will be more fun as show continues."
Writer Park already finished writing. Han Ye-ri said because all scripts were out it was easy to do acting. "In acting point of view, completed script is big strength in deciding what part you have to emphasize and what part you should not emphasize."

About the comment "They usually say when actresses gather together atmosphere can turn to be scary." Park Hye-soo/Eun-jae (the youngest of the group) said "When I have shooting, I get to stay with unni(older sis) for more than 20 hours. We talk lots of personal matters, like diet problem, dating, and share each other's concerns and worries. I am always happy to come to the set because I can listen to those stories from unni who are sunbae(senior) in this area. I feels like I gain something in my life. Looks like unni having good time too."

All five actresses expressed they felt most connected to Eun-jae character, and all agreed the charms of 'Age of Youth' is that every character has at least one relatable point. Han Ye-ri said "Everybody has a first time, so all feel relatable to Eun-jae." And Ryu hwa-young/(sexy) Yi-Na shocked people saying "My dating style is similar to Yae-eun."

Park Eun-bin is gaining some fame? for her Ji-won role. PD Lee said "First time we met, she gave me impression like SinSaImDang (graceful, Just like her role as HJ's wife from Guam Heo Jun). But now she became completely Ji-woon from the way of walking to the way of talking. Ji-won is a character who can see a ghost, play guardian angel listening to other people's concerns. It is the role giving advice and suggestion by examining a problem from a spectator's point of view, rather than someone standing in the middle...

in the middle of the problem."

Park Eun-bin said "The viewers said they felt energy watching me, and it made me feel good because that was what I was hoping for."
She said she thought she wouldn't feel embarrassed for filming the scene where she danced in the club, but it actually became burden. "People around me said they had expectations, but they seemed to have more worries and concerns. PD-nim didn't believe in me either. I just shaked arms and legs as body moved without any choreographed move. I had muscle ache and my throat hurt when swallowing next day. I think there will be more dancing scenes in the future and now I can dance even without music."

Ryu Hwa-young had a kiss scene earlier with Han Seong-yeon (That was OMG moment, remember?). "My first kiss scene was with Lee Seong-gi oppa in the movie 'Love Forecast/Today's Love', but I felt better this time because my partner was a woman, so her lips were moist. I wish there are more. Please look forward to Womance." (which remark made other actresses cringed) And she said she was envious of Han Ye-ri's lips if there are lips she wanted. Han Seong-yeon/Yae-eun said "Well actually when I started acting, I vaguely thought there would be a day doing a kiss scene with a woman, but I didn't know that day would come this fast. Anyway Hwa-young did powerful kiss so I was able to have a good reaction fitting to that action."

Han Seong-yeon and Ji Il-joo are couple in the show. Han said "It is date in which both of them are clinging type."
Ji Il-joo said "Kara debuted when I was in the army. I liked Kara, but when I met her first time, I didn't recognize her. As we were talking, I realized she was Han Seong-yeon and I thought I won the lottery. I am shooting happily. I am thankful to PD-nim." About playing 'bastard' Doo-young in the drama, he said "Go Doo-young is terrible bastard, no doubt. I am not like him. I am a devoted man. I treat a woman well, and listen to her well. I am also a boyfriend who does his best." Han said Ji was really great partner "It is fortunate that Il-joo oppa can act well and has lots of acting experience. He helps me to depict Ye-eun as relatable character."

Han Seong Yeon who made ratings promise "We will perform Kara's hip dance if ratings go over 3%" previously said, "Han Ye-ri majored in dancing, Park Eun-bin is ok from what I've watched. Ryu Hwa-young is not bad. But the one I worry the most is Park Hye-soo. If ratings go over 3%, I will be totally responsible for training her to do the dance. So Please let us have ratings over 3%."

Yes I will join the prayer club (chanting Higher ratings!Higher ratings!Higher ratings!). AOY fighting!

On the night ep 7 of W was aired, a Korean shooter named Jung Jin-oh had a bad round of 6.6 points in Men's 50m pistol. He then came back to win the gold medal by shooting the next few rounds around the 10 points mark and set an Olympic Record.

'Bring It On, Ghost' had a press conference too.[The fact, Xsports News]
About the show, PD Park Joon-hwa said "I think there are parts people can relate because the show has mixed genres- not just horror, I wanted to show sorrow, happiness, joyfulness, and laugh also. I tried to pursue realism within ghosts portrayed.. Nobody actually saw a ghost. I thought it is too simple if we show ghosts in typical format. Because of the limit in describing them, we added story-line. In drama, including high school senior ghost, we tried to add a meaning to the character rather than emphasizing on looks with each ghost. We tried to show difference with each ghost." The key point of the later episodes is Joo Hye-sung Kwon Yeul plays. PD Park said "They say the scariest thing is a person. Even though the title of our drama is 'Bring it On, Ghost', I think the most scary part is Kwon Yeol. In later episodes, in addition to ghost fighting by Bong-pal and Hyun-ji, Joo Hye-sung, Hyun-ji and Bong-pal's relationships will progress rapidly."

About the question if he believes in a ghost, Kwon Yeul said "There was some weird thing happened on the set."
PD Park added, "When we were shooting the scene in the Blood sausage soup restaurant, scripter beside me asked me if I heard some strange sound. I didn't have my headphone on that time. I thought it was the noise coming from the fan, so I told them to turn off the fan. When the actor was saying his lines, I could hear a girl's high pitched voice. It sounded like she was answering to the conversation." Taec-yeon said, "I was saying my lines, and some girl's voice said "Eung" like she was answering. That was a scene with four people in it and it was high-pitched woman's voice. Staffs thought I was playing a joke, But no, it was not me."

About his scary Hye-sung character, Kwon Yeol said "I know Hye-sung character is compared to Choi Sung-jae (played by Im Joo-hwan) in 'Oh my Ghostess'. I was not bothered but since people stated that I was compared to Im Joo-hwan ssi, I talked to PD-nim once. In case of OMG, Choi's identity was revealed at the end, but in this drama, Hye-sung was exposed in the beginning increasing the tension. And there was spoiler saying "He seems to be the villain." His story will be told more later- why he became evil, how he overcomes and solves his problem etc. Because there are undoubtedly something connecting three people, I think people can watch the show with curiosity, more engaged in the show." About romance, "I started knowing there is no romance for me. I always talk with PD about how I can give more suspense and tension. It is false rumor that I am dissatisfied because there is no romance for me."

PD said "I watched OMG but haven't finished it. I think it was a fun drama. Rather than using it as reference, or trying to show difference, I just worry about what is the best story and directing-wise. I am grateful people compare our show with a good project."

About Hyun-ji character, Kim So-hyun said "It is the most cheery and bright character I have ever played. And it was first time chasing after my partner actor and expressing it, so I couldn't get it when I read the script at first. I was at a loss how to play the character, but they said I should just let my guards down on everything on the set. Taec-yeon oppa takes my acts in well, so I shoot having fun, laughing a lot. I felt embarrassed and awkward playing cute and whining at first, but as I kept doing it, I became used to it and felt like I was getting close to the character."

Some people were uncomfortable about 11 year age difference in OTP, so there was concern with the kiss scene. Taec-yeon said he was chewed out a lot about it. "Response was hot. I was scolded a lot by texts and chatting from people around me. But since there was a kiss scene in the beginning of the show, in one way our acting together became more nature after that. We conquered a big mountain first. I might say rest of them looks like just a hill. I feel more comfortable." KSH nodded in agreement.
About what to come, Taec-yeon said "I think the relationship between Bong-pal and Hyun-ji improves, and they might show some new side of them. Kim So-hyun acts so well and she has loveliness of Hyun-ji character. When she is hitting on me in a scene, there is cuteness and loveliness, so not only me but also all staffs watch the monitor with fatherly smile on their faces."
On the question about popular variety "Three meals a day" he's done, he said "I like acting with Kim So-hyun more than serving Lee Seo-jin hyung in the 'Three meals a day'. I discussed with Lee Seo-jin hyung a lot about it before I started this project. He promised to buy me a meal, but he hasn't. I am still waiting." Also on the comment that his BingGu character from 'Three Meals a day' is close to Park Bong-pal character, he said "I think they found my natural image through the variety. Bong-pal seems to have BingGu image more than animal-Dol image of 2PM. Still I am more serious in the character than my real self. I am actually more cheerful."

About their chemistry, PD said "Their mental ages are on similar level unlike their real age difference." (heh)

Kang Ki-young and David Lee offers bromance and laugh in the show. Kang said age gap between him and David Lee is also 11 years. "The thing you see in the broadcast shows only half of what we do in real life. I will try to show us looking more comfortable." Lee said "I am happy to act with hyung 11 years older than me. This is the first time I do acting this funny. I want my mouth to take a rest, but it doesn't."

Hi Everyone! ....... I hope you are all doing well today!

Watching only a couple of dramas this week as some shows have been pre-empted due to the Olympics.  By the way, Go Team USA!

Watched this week:

Wanted - Everyone's a suspect! I kind of like that.

Uncontrollably Fond - Ji-tae's mom ...... she's bad news!

Duet Song Festival - I watched an episode or two of this a while back and before I knew it, I've been watching every week now. ....... All I know is, that young gal who sang with Sandeul needs a record deal of her own.  She's excellent.

That's all for now. ....... Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

Go, team Estonia! we havent gotten any really shiny medals but a bronze in rowing... the 4-men how do you call it - and one guy was sick, dizzy and on painkillers and fainted on finish line. our female fencer team got 4th after Russia. But the greater victory is everyone is watching fencing after 45 years (must be the movie The Fencer that made it popular again. movies and dramas have power indeed...) now there is still wrestling and weight lifting. and discus.

Here is a short interview with Oh Dae-hwan(38) who played the villain Ma Jin-suk impressively in Police Unit 38.
Emphasizing he is 'Eul'(Subordinate), Oh talked about PU38 which made him 'Gap'(Boss) and his life as an actor. [OSEN] He said he was flabbergasted about people's interests even after the show ended. Recently He's been spending his time reading/enjoying comments. He made impression as an actor in the movie 'Office' last year, but this is first time he made his name known. "I have never imagined an evil character would receive this much love. Director-nim even said he was sorry before starting shooting because Ma was such terrible character. I read comments after the broadcast and there were complements like "He is sexy", "Suits look good on him", "His acting is good". I am still amazed."

He was casted even before Seo In-gook. "I met Director Hwang Joon-hyuk (of PU38) before receiving the synopsis. I met him in 'Hidden Identity' before. He said "I really wish you take this role" and I said "OK" right away trusting him."
His villain character could be burden to an actor, but he said he felt vicarious satisfaction. "I've been always 'Eul'. I am not well-known actor and I don't do well financially. So acting Ma Jin-suk was very enjoyable for me. Should I say I felt catharsis? Most of all, I was happy I could play as much as I wanted in PU38. Thanks to Director-nim who said "You do whatever you want to do", I was able to shoot comfortably without making mistakes. I had fun literally."

He seemed different from how he looked. He enjoys coffee because he can't drink. And he is not rich at all. "I tried to give up on acting 2 years ago. I had such hard time financially and I thought it was selfish of me living as I wanted. I remember I cried a lot and prayed a lot. I left the stage and did manual labor carrying potatoes and sweet potatoes in Garak market. But I became sick only after 2 days. I think the reason I can still do acting is thanks to my spirited (supportive) wife and children. He has 3 children and his wife is pregnant with their 4th child.

He started as a stage actor, and he said he still misses stage play and musical. "I thought I could make my name in my mid 40's, so I am very grateful with viewers' interests this time. I want to melt into the acting having a face which reflects ups and downs, sorrow and happiness and all in life. For the movie which I like as much as stage play, I'd like to do a good project which I give my all, even if I get to do once or twice a year, just like Song Kang-ho or Oh Dal-soo sunbae-nim. And in my 60s, I wish I could move to a fishing village, and do fishing and put on small stage play with hoobae.

Lastly he said "Personally I feel fortunate and happy because he didn't stay as a bad person to the end. Ma Jin-suk! I have gained a lot thanks to you. But let's not live like that." As a next project, he will be in 'Shopping king Lois' with...

Happy Friday, everyone!~

Man. Ohhh man. I feel like I should have cried in some of this week's episodes like I did last week, but jesus. Instead my heart feels so heavy trying to recollect everything that happened in both Doctors and Uncontrollably Fond. Let me describe it this way: While last week's episodes felt like I was riding an emotional roller coaster, this week's episodes felt like I was carrying a lot of emotional baggage to a feels trip. I... can't seem to take in everything, orz

On a brighter note, I am excited for Cinderella and the Four Knights! It looks like a really fun story and reverse harems are usually fun~

I even stopped watching Bring It On, Ghost and W since two weeks ago. Beans of Wisdom had been helping me to keep up with the lattest comments from beanies because I'm no longer being able to read all of Dramabeans articles and comments.
I still want to watch k-drama, but I have to cut off my drama lists T.T

Now I'm struggle to choose between Scarlet Heart, Moonlight, or Jealousy Incarnate. Sure there will be drama recaps, but it feels different compare to when you actually watch the drama.. Sometimes, it's just hard to be a k-drama fan girl :(

Good morning beanies ~

Here’s a double your pleasure episode with Jung Joonyoung as the guest on I Can Hear Your Voice and Mi Joo from 38 Task Force as one of the contestants.
http://kshowonline.com/kshow/5496-%5Bengsub%5D-i-can-see-your-voice-s3-ep.5

38 Task Force did it big, ending on a high note and wrapping up all the twisted plot lines and taking down the even more twisted baddies. I guess the office motto: “Chase until the end and collect it all” which struck me as a little bland and hardly motivational truly was the impetus to Sung Il’s fight ‘til it’s done determination along with his integrity. Jung Do, the loveable con artist that you just want to cook a hot meal for, was the perfect carefree daring partner. As bromance often does, they brought the best in each other.

W ~ webtoon kisses with no rules. My heart races just thinking about W~

A Girl and Three Sweethearts (jdrama) – Misaki being idiotically honest is her being true to herself even if she ends up on the dock watching fireworks alone. She is feminine and sparkly and it would appear that she would easily “lose” to sophisticated Kaede, but I love that even though Misaki might step back at first, she replays the situation in her head and returns to stand up for her perspective.

Kdrama Quote of the Day:
“You may be a star but you aren’t a star to us.” (UF ep 11)

"Even if someone hurts you with words, it doesn't always mean that they were speaking the truth." (Ahn Dan Tae in BGS ep 4)

I’m really looking forward to Cinderella and the Four Knights!

Happy August weekend everyone 

I watched a bit of a different drama the last week or so, Chinese Paladin 5: Clouds of the World. I'm on the last 2 episodes (of 45!) now. It's a fantasy martial arts drama based on a videogame of the same name (also translated as Sword & Fairy 5). ANYWAY it was a really good show and starred Elvis Han from Wu Xin the Monster Slayer. What I liked about it was that it was just like a typical JRPG that you would need 100 hours to play. It had a really good main plot with some interesting sidestories. It only had a few true filler episodes and they were still very charming. The main characters all got extensive development, the lovelines were interesting and complicated, the women on the show ALL kick major ass and are highly skilled martial artists or sorceresses and there was pretty much nothing exploitive in it. Sometimes the SFX were cheesy but really who cares. So a nice change compared to something like Game of Thrones.

Five Kids shocked me this past weekend when it wasn't the final episode. I had overlooked the news it got a 4 episode extension (WELL DUH) and it seems to be smoothly coasting in to a really solid wrap up.

Hi all:

Horrible heat wave (yes, my 3rd straight week of whining about something but it's really hot out there and in here.)

Am one of the judges in a writing contest and gnashing my teeth from frustration at these entries. For instance...these historical fiction contest entries! I'd forgotten that the past was literally littered with pedophile priests. smh. I suppose I asked for it so I shouldn't be whining. We aren't supposed to be nasty or sarcastic with our comments so I'm sitting here typing passionate defenses of the fairytale genre...and trying to not hammer writers who think they can improve on a time-proven formula. There are just so many lesbian warrior knights, rebellious pacifist princes, children of African princes "who slept with the married adulterous blonde queen and who is now cast-out of the kingdom by the cuckolded king" that one can endure..and all done so meta it makes me want to scream. I have so far managed to NOT say, "Okay, this story of yours may seem new, super-diverse, and ultra creative to you but to me it's old hat and a very worn tired old hat at that and do NOT try to write a genre if in your heart you don't understand or respect it. You are only allowed to fool around with a genre if you have mastered the basics." So...... 100 or so more stories to go. In the end, I shall come forth with a new ability to help annoying writers without crushing them.

Other than that, I've started writing poems again. My latest poem https://www.hitrecord.org/records/2943168

and https://www.hitrecord.org/records/2940349

Dramas:

I love you Olympics but wow, did I ever miss my dramas! Do I have to wait another week for Flower in Prison and other goodies?

W: Was that "normal everyday romance" chapter the sweetest thing ever? Oh my gosh! Writer-nim, we bow to your greatness and your wit. AND your respect for the intelligence and humor of your audience. That entire episode was meta done perfectly well. Touching the mind but also touching the heart. It makes other dramas (which shall be nameless) feel like mere paint-by-numbers. That entity really creeps me out. He's got godlike powers. Is he a time-traveler, time-shifter? I think I'll have to get a chromebook flip because seeing DB on my laptop can be a chore and I so want to read through all the theories on the W thread. Unfortunately, the hard work of interacting is too much for me on this computer.

Rewatching Yamada Tarou Monogatari, and catching up on an old anime version of Tale of Genji on youtube.

That's it. Have a great weekend, all.

I'm dying at the descriptions of some of those stories, the " lesbian warrior knights, rebellious pacifist princes, children of African princes “who slept with the married adulterous blonde queen and who is now cast-out of the kingdom by the cuckolded king" sounds like a tumblr wet dream.

oh God it's horrible. I wish I could laugh at some of these stories. I asked for fantasy, fairytale, historical fiction, and ghost stories. But these folks are more tv-watchers than readers. The fantasies are full of twee little feminist/victim pure fairies, the fairytales are done by folks who think they're too modern for fairytales, the historical fiction is a chance to pick on the evil white Christian male society (unless it's a hot free-thinking feministy guy who is way before his time), and the ghost stories are like splatter films written by folks who have never read a classic or modern ghost story but who are all gore-whores. It's like... I'm fighting to be gentle. But the hardest thing: We have to find something good to say even if the story's crap and we have to find something helpful to say even if we think a story is perfect. So right now it's like hashtags: #Theremustbesomethinggoodinthispileofcrap and #GottaLearnToNitPick

I've read stories like those in the past, and when often felt obliged to make myself like them more than I did - but it's not a moral failing to expect a story to be well-told. Good luck with the feedback, I hope you find something good!

@Carole--Curious to know which fantasy writers you read? Have you read any Guy Gavriel Kay? He's a Canadian writer who has a heavy wistful tone that I really really dig. "Tigana," the two-part "Sarantine Mosaic" series, "The Lions of Al-Rassan," and "Under Heaven," are all so so good.

Guy Gavriel Kay FTW!!!! I'm so happy whenever I run into another fan. I'm so glad i scrolled through Open Thread late in the day! I read the Lions of Al-Rassan once a year and have a good cry.

0

Another Guy Gavriel Kay fan here. I'm not especially into Fantasy as a genre but his books are just so beautifully written. The two titles I most enjoyed are Sailing to Sarantium and A Song for Arbonne. I've read ASfA multiple times and it never gets tired. Blaise de Garsenc is still one of my favourite male literary characters.

0

@Lindy12 I would actually have to say ASfA is my favorite, but so much so I don't want or need to re-read it that often.

0

I read a lot of fantasy writers, cause that's my genre. I tend to like alternate reality stories, epic fantasy, dystopian fantasy, and YA fantasy. Anything with a really good worldbuilding is good. Off-hand, there are so many soooo I'll just list those fantasy writers who're my good friends... to give them a shoutout.

Sylvia Kelso, an Australian high fantasy writer. She's really good but super-complex. My favorite book of hers is Amberlight, which is feminist epic fantasy. Kari Sperring is English and one of my favorite books of hers is Living With Ghosts, an analogue European medieval world. Nnedi Okorafor is Nigerian-American. She does African-themed fantasy, lots of war. Charles Saunders is a Black Canadian writer. Nick Wood is South African. I recently reviewed his Azanian Bridges, which takes place in an alternate South Africa. Chris Howard has a wonderful series based on the mermaids found in Greek myths.

0

Yay, other Guy Gavriel Kay fans!!! I think my favorite still is the "Sarantine Mosaic" 2-book series.. But I've reread "Tigana" and "Lions of Al Rassan" many more times.

@Carole--I'll have to check out these writers you've listed!! Thanks!

I wonder, while kdorama tend to focus mainly (and heavily) on romance and their leads lover chemistry, why K entertainment world has less starcouples (aka actor marry his co-star) compare to C, Tw, and J entertainment. Here we have:
Wallace Huo-Ruby Lin (Sound of Colors)
Chen Xiao-Michelle Chen (RotCH), who have similar reel to real in drama bravado as Ahn Jae Hyun-Gu Hye Sun with Blood.
Nicky Wu-Liu Shi Shi (BBJX)
Yuan Hong-Zhang Xin Yi (Princess Jieyou)
Vic Zhou-Reen Yu (Black & White)
Kaku Kento-Eikura Nana (N no Tameni)
Daigo-Keiko Kitagawa (Lady Saigo no Hanzai Profiler)
Masahiro Higashide-Anne Watanabe (Gochisousan)
and don't forget my favorite, Takashi Sorimachi-Nanako Matsushima (GTO)
and many more.

okay, some starcouple marriage happen over wedlock, but still they're married. dating rumor is not counted.

so what happen actually? I mean, you spend a lot of time staring, kissing, and interacting with your co star in crazy-intense filming schedule and nothing happen? are they so professional so they able to separate their own feeling and their character feeling? or may be that they're so feed up with the entertainment world so they don't want to have partner from same industry?

Korean entertainment seems unusually conservative about celebrities dating at all, forget dating each other. I think they do date, and sometimes date each other, but they generally take great care to keep it under wraps because it ends up leading to things like lost endorsements.

The closest thing I can think of to a 'star couple' in k-ent is Song Hye-gyo and Lee Byung-hun, and Song Hye-gyo/Hyun Bin.

My impression is that a lot of co-stars do get together during/after filming but it just doesn't last.
The only married star couples that pop into my head rn who went from reel to real are

Eugene & Ki Tae-young
and the one you mentioned Ahn Jae-hyun & Goo Hye-sun

I've been on a writing kick so I wanted to ask you guys, what would be your ideal kdrama? I would love to see a female-lead psychological thriller (kind of a mix of Pretty Little Liars and White Christmas) and I think it'd be cool to have a show like Supernatural but with a brother-sister combo and Korean mythology.

Ooooh, I just remembered - I always thought it'd be really cool to have a mermaid story with the human friend being a haenyo (the boss female divers of Jeju).

I think a drama that treats non-romantic relationships with the same respect and focus as most dramas do romance, is pretty amazing no matter what the premise is.

So I guess my ideal drama would be one that had a really strong emphasis on friendship, family and mutual respect? High school dramas like School 2013 and Sassy Go Go are good examples of those, but it's not about the setting, it's about the relationships. Answer Me 1988 also did a fantastic job of putting family and friends first, and Misaeng emphasised the bond between coworkers.

Failing all else, give me a good friends-to-lovers relationship, one where the friendship isn't just window dressing for the eventual romance.

ideal kdrama is where the world is complex, in that there are always a lot of connections in life, a network, many interwining relationships not just 4 main leads. but at the same time it is simple enough to enable a character to grow on you, to become part of you. go deeper rather than broader. another thing is a characters´´´motivation for personal development. not just "WHO does s/he want" but what does s/he want, what would be a satisfactory outcome for the character not for you. fourth - my best ideas come in seconds, then can be absurd, the mind needs to be unleashed of all rules to find a new theme, something fresh. sometimes dramas find it and dismiss it and let romance smother it. If you find a quirky little gem but think it is too odd, too weird to be understood - no, let it shine! dont cover it up, polish it! it can be the main thig, or the pacemaker for the drama.

@mk--I started rewatching "Joseon X Files" last night, and in many ways I have been waiting for something similar to come by ever since... Not only is the story different, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE the way it was shot. Lots of hand-held, lots of moody lighting and smoke/mist. It's gritty, dark and absolutely gorgeous.

Story-wise, it hooks from the get-go... the leads are real/genuine/flesh-and-blood AND mysterious/ethereal/thrilling/too pretty to look at...

It would rock my world if the same writer(s), PD and crew could come up with something like that again.. I don't do research on these things, so if anyone knows what other shows these folk have completed, I'd watch them in a minute!

I still can't believe PU38 is over, WHYYYYY?! *sob* how am I going to get through this weekend with no more of our favourite con artists?

And why does OCN refuse to wrap things up so they can dangle the carrot of a second season which we know will never happen because SIG will be off to the military within the next year?! Still, this is my favourite of the year so far, and I don't think even W is going to dethrone it - it'll be a mighty job to do so!

YES!!!! we can have our con bunker there! like the back room of butcher shop!

btw I was also stretching out the last episode to span 4 days. I just couldnt let go in one swift watching. Time ran faster for this drama, I swear! It passed abnormally quickly.

I am watching the BTS episode nowq although I haven´t found it subbed yet, and watching all kinds of old clips. I wish Lee Seun Bin had been in more stuff before Squad 38. But we can follow all our team and talk about what they are doing. I also really want to see Ma Jin Seok again. He is so cheeky. His kids have such a fun dad (he should go on Return of Superman! or do the kids have to be really little for that?)

I third the Healer-style reconvening.

0

@mary, yeah it might not be the best idea to reveal kids at a sensitive age. Osbournes were one thing, but they, too, were affected not so prettily from being exposed.

on the other hand, I am still really curious what he is like with his family!

I made a start and posted a small list of things to talk about at the end of last recaps´ comments.

Happy friday! Finally able to motivate myself to catch up on my ongoing dramas and finish one more drama before the week ends.

The Good Wife - Caught up to ep 8; gah why do I feel like she's going to end up choosing Tae Joon in the end (provided if he's innocent?? which I don't know if he really is?)

W - Caught up to ep 6; hate to say this but maybe my interest in this has dwindled...I don't know...ep 5 was like basically just the convo between Father and Kang Chul

Beautiful Mind - Caught up to ep 5; Late to the party (was supposed to start and finish last week oops) but OMG I think this might be the drama to get me out of my slump. I kept trying to guess the killer but I got it wrong...or did I...?

If I have time this weekend I might be able to start on Police Unit 38 (or whatever the title is)

Let's try something different. I actually have a list of the dramas I've already seen aside from my watch list. I've seen k-dramas before but most of them when they are shown in our local channels. I've marathoned some popular ones online but it was just last year that I've spent time to watch these shows. My stress reliever in my undergrad was reading fiction. I've been into American tv series too, although now, I'm quite selective already (I'm still watching Grey's Anatomy - 12 Seasons at that). I've tried animes and manga too. But now that I'm in law school, kdramas are my go-to when I want to escape stress. I read fiction from time to time but now as frequent as before. Main reason for that is we already have a lot of things to read at school.

Anyway, I've finished about more or less 60 dramas. Maybe sometime I can post it here. How about you? How's your list?

And it's almost embarrassing to say but I probably watched almost 90% of them within the last year ? (and I actually watched my first kdrama in 2002 lol).
And there are still around 30 on my to watch list which keeps on growing. ?

And the drama (angry memes, Robel the whale, slime green pool, name calling) is great too.

I feel like I was a lot more pumped for London than I am for Rio, but what the athletes achieve is so incredible that it's hard not to get at least a little caught up in it. I love to watch the gymnastics, and Simone Biles is AMAZING. (I'm also slain by the other US gymnast who gave the judges a little wink before starting her floor routine and scoring a gold medal - the kdrama fan part of me wondered what was up with winking Olympians these days, whether it's the fictional one in W or the real one here).

I also love that the Refugee Olympic team has scored a gold medal. Of all the athletes at the games, they've survived the most incredible odds, and it's humbling to see.

"Simone Biles is AMAZING" Agreed!

I was a bit sad that Gabby couldn't compete because they only allowed 2 girls from each country but Simone and Aly were the best 2 for the all round individual event.

I wouldn't feel as bad about Gabby if she hadn't placed third out of all the gymnasts in the qualifiers - but since #1 and 2 were her compatriots, she didn't get to go to the finals :( . Sometimes that rule really sucks when it locks out people who would otherwise outclass the rest of the field.

Still, she made history in 2012 and it's incredible that she came back to Rio - gymnast's careers are usually over by her age (she's retiring after this Olympics, I believe?), and that she's still competing at the top levels, is something amazing.

0

Me too. I was never nervous about Simone because she's so insanely good at everything, but I was really pulling for Aly since the tie breaking bullshit took away her bronze last time and I wanted to her to get some justice. Her floor routine is always a joy to watch but this time it went all the way to cathartic.

I'll probably cry over Phelps' last race tomorrow too. The end of an era ;__;

0

Phelps must be exhausted. I'm not missing his last race.

Simone might walk away with 5 gold medals in this Olympics.

0

Am now obsessed with swimming so much so that I watched Cool Kiz episodes on swimming. Had no idea so many Korean idols/actors were such good swimmers. I can understand why SungHoon has been typecast as the athlete in KBS dramas - he's a great swimmer

Love the Olympics and I'm not just rooting for my country. I root for the athletes no matter where they are from.

Korea is dominating archery ( Chang Hye-jin <3) which is one of my favorite event beside swimming and gymnastic.

Kōhei Uchimura of Japan <3. I've never been to Japan but I was totally rooting for their team because I'm a Uchimura fan-girl.

Men's synchronized 10m platform (diving). Lin Yue and Chen Aisen (China) totally deserve the gold. They were way ahead of the 2nd place.

Women Gymnastics: The amazing Simone Biles and Aly in the Women's individual all-around winning gold and silver for the US.
My favorite was Aliya Mustafina (Russia) on the uneven bars.

Swimming: I was rooting for Nathan Adrian. Gold, silver and bronze. Not bad.
Katie Ledecky you go girl!

Lol I could go on and on. I love the athletes and their stories. They are often inspiring.

Thanks for your hot tip re: HOTARU NO HIKARI. I had a blast watching both series and the movie. What a romp. I can now spot a himono onna at 50 yards. LOL.

But I have to say the "character" that absolutely stole the show for me was the bright yellow t-shirt hanging on the clothesline. I just about fainted when I saw the logo for "Hot Dog Johnny's, Route 46, Buttzville, NJ." It's in my neck of the woods, I've eaten there, and passed it countless times on my way to the Delaware Water Gap and Pennsylvania. On a scorching day like today, a wiener and a frosted mug of birch beer (or buttermilk!) is just the ticket while watching the Pequest River flow down to the mighty Delaware. ;-)

This has got to be the most highly-targeted PPL I've ever seen.

Hiya! Glad you enjoyed Hotaru no Hikari, it's one of the better rom-coms of the latter 2000s. If you liked Buchou, aka Fujiki Naohito, I recommend Love Revolution - he was so suave there as a hotshot journalist.

Yee ha!

I realized while watching HnH that it reminded me of screwball comedies of the '30s and '40s. It really cracked me up when Buchou kept quoting Goethe regarding the joy of travel being in the journey rather than the destination -- whereas for Hotaru, the joy is in returning home to the verandah. It was a blast hearing him speak Italian, too.

I got such a kick out of Fujiki Naohito... Thanks for steering me to LOVE REVOLUTION. I like his brand of suave, and it will be fun to see his journalistic chops. I'm aware that he's in ONE LITRE OF TEARS, but I'm not up for crying my eyes out just now. I'm finally watching SIGNAL, and enjoying it to bits. But there's a limit to my lachrymal glands' endurance. ;-)

Thanks a bunch!

Haha, I'm glad you liked the HnH film. Except for the Italy bit, it didn't really hit the same note with me and I'm glad they gave that franchise a rest (for good).

I adore Fujiki in Love Revolution, it's one of my favourite J-dramas ever and I love his character there more than I do Buchou. He also had wonderful chemistry with Esumi Makiko, and they're still one of my golden J-drama onscreen pairings. I skipped 1 Litre of Tears, but if you're in the mood for a tearjerker romance, he was also in Itoshi Kimi e, which was pretty decent on the whole.

0

Ya, junny!

I just watched the first episode of LOVE REVOLUTION... Funny how it starts off in Italy... shades of HnH. Looks like good fun.

I got introduced to kdramas by my sister, boys over flowers was the first one. Loved the show but hated the kiss scenes because let's face it nobody kisses like that unless you're going for a peck. But i still liked those scenes for the innocence it imbues. I sometimes crave kdramas with a bit risqué scenes but when i get them i get disgusted. I watch kdramas because it gives hope on relationships. Yes, the timid girl can get the prince not just literarily but literally too. There's this meme i see regularly on pinterest, it pictures a scene from vampire diaries after they've had sex and the watcher having a bland expression and a scene from heartstrings with the OTPs holding hands and the watcher having an awwww-so-cute expression. I know i've managed to contradict myself but that goes to show that we have different moods and during those moods there are somethings we can't stand that on a normal day, we love. I like that they focus on love and relationships because that's the one thing everyone of us doubts but hopes for. We know if we put in the handwork in our careers we'll make it but relationships are not always that white and black. So, to me, these kdramas are saying, Keep On Trucking.
I prefer kdramas to Hollywood things because most times relationships are simple in the sense that if you break up witg your boyfriend your girlfriends will hate him with you and not go behind your back to sleep with him and hope you give them your blessings.

Finally Friday! I've been checking the date all the week: everyday had a saturday or sunday vibe, though it wasn't, and i ended being disappointed and impatient to reach the week-end all the week. Though It doesn't make sense: i'm on holidays?!

Watching nowadays High school king of savvy on a legal streaming site and i'm shocked by the amount of comments written to just bash the main lady and the second male actor because of their looks.

People repeted ad nauseum the same questions: when will Lee Hana's character have a makeover? Why does she look like a grand-ma?

As women, do we really need an heroine who look like a fashion victim in order to get involved in the show? Is the female lead only here to satisfy our need for projection and escape?

Maybe because it's noona romance where the female lead is supposed to be 10 years older than the male lead while both actors have almost the same age (3 years gap), i feel it makes sense to dress her in a very old fashion way that fits not only her quirky almost alien personality but also enhances the age gap with the main male character, especially when both characters have the same level of maturity (they've been dumbdowned a lot by the writer).

I found it very refreshing to watch the obstined determination that the actress, the PD and the costume designer put to not sexualize Lee Hana's character. She is clearly feminine in her appearance and totally embracing this part of herself without resorting to look sexy and hot, or conventionnally attractive to men.

It was for me so liberating to watch a female character who isn't about pleasing aesthetically everybody, and live her life based on her hope, dreams and values.

This show has its flaws but this point, the cast and crew covered it very well.

I'm on episode 11 and really wish the make over will never happen.

and good analyses on lee Hanas character. to me she just looked normal. yep. cause most kdrama heroines and the korean style in general with nonexistent minis but long sleeves and this 1980ies feel of fashion, or cute anime stykle is very weird. she was dressed normally. and I think what made her good was the rush, the constant pushing on,l never stop, keep moving, keep doing. there wasnt a moment I think when this character just stopped or was there. lots of modern women live like aperpetuum mobile

Yeah even him: he was called ugly, a rat, a pelican, a vampire but with negative connotation etc...
Since he has a lot of supporters too, it sounded less worse than it was for Lee Hana, but i consider the attitude to be incredibly offensive and rude in all cases.

Actors are not models: they aren't supposed to embody an idealized image of beauty, so why the hate?

It's even more baffling because it was so not true!
If you're not convinced that the show is just trying very hard to promote a different image of feminity and attractiveness with its main female character's original appareance, which should be a relief for all the girls and women who felt, if only once in their lives, insecure about their looks, just do a quick research on internet, you'll find so many pics proving without doubt that the main actress is gorgeous (one the most beautiful women i ever seen in drama land).

"to me she just looked normal"

To me too!
Her wardrobe wasn't always fitting and was sometimes ridiculous (like the socks that she wore with every kind of shoes even sandals), but her mistakes seemed understable giving her quite unique personality. And by the way which kind of women have never made fashion mistakes (i know i do)?
She looked very natural in her clothes, whenever she made a "good" or a "bad" choice, she looked herself and assumed it beautifully.

I don't get why women are so harsh on others women on those questions of looks while they are also victims everyday of the same kind of judgements and know very well how much it hurts.

Apologize for posting it here instead of in their respective recap thread--the comment section is just gigantic and terrifying!

Okay, let's talk about Doctors and W. I feel like the romance in both drama started really weird, it doesn't feel like having a solid ground. I don't understand why Hyejung is willing to have relationship with Hong other than the golden memories of high school. And it still feels icky.
Meanwhile W, absolutely don't see how they "love" each other. The whole comic-dragged mystery is intriguing but throwing romance in between feels really unnatural and forced (?). I am aware of several interesting theories and ep 7 is just uber cute, but the drama technically hasn't explained anything which makes the romance, well, weird. Anyone so kind to explain this jaded heart of mine? ?

Back to drama list. Aside two above, i truly enjoy Age of Youth. It is so interesting seeing these girls and how i can relate to every girl's character based on my own experience. How is wish this will have more than 12 eps :(

Still haven't watched the last 2 ep of PU38, am having severe separation anxiety for this con team. 16 ep really flies when you have con team doing con for justice lol

Watched 2 ep of Second to Last Love and i loooooove Kim Hee Ae, her char is badass and no nonsense woman. The amount of shouting is a bit ridiculous, Kwak Siyang is a bit greasy and Ji Jin Hee is kinda plain (?) but my screen is lit when Kim Seulgi appears haha i am biased i know. Btw, this drama feels less slick, they way they filmed and edited feels a bit outdated; is it bcs it's not prime time drama?

The Good Wife, well i really hope whether she likes Joowon or not, she will leave the husband no matter what. Yoo Ji Tae is doing great job but Taejun is just a jerk she deserves better. Him and his lawyer can go to political ladder but don't drag precious Hyekyung into it >.<

Anyway, anyone here residing in The Netherlands? I am going to live there for one year pursuing master degree and my flight is next wednesday. So excited for this ??

I am having similar problems with W peoples swoon but over what? it doesnt make sense. I just take it as in the world of the drama it was invented by a teen so it actually feels like a naive teenager who doesnt grasp continuity and doesnt do background research has written it. I must admit some inner monologues of Kang Chul are better than that, but it is like, they are his own, and he is older than a teen... Yeon joo might be a grown-up but she is really simple....and still naive just like a teenage girl

After ep 7 revealed who is the real original inventor, i understand why now why the whole comic universe changes to romantic side with her as female lead. Totally agree with you as she is basically acting like teenage girl having crush.

What bothers me more is how willing Kangchul gets into her romance scenario without asking further explanation from her. Sexual attraction is one thing but he is really quick thinking and logical. I cheer a lot when he asked why she keeps saving him but then dissapointed when he drop the subject. But maybe they will delve into this more in next ep *shrugs

That's so funny about W. Since I read all the comments, I get whiplash with the opposing reactions to it. Like, there's a group that wants more fleshed out romance, and there's a group that don't care about the romance and just want to uncover the mysteries.

I feel stuck in the middle. I'll squee at the crazy things the OTP does, but I also don't want to flesh out the romance line too much because I want the show to keep moving. I guess I'm forgiving about the quickness of the love line since we have a Faceless Killer to fight and an existential crisis to solve. I want Song Jae-jung to answer those questions because my brain is fried!

Re: Age of Youth, I am IN LOVE with this show. There's a discussion in #1 of this OT that doesn't like how AoY is focused on romance and sex. Which is funny because, how rare is it to have girls discuss sex in kdramas? But even if I'm a serial shipper who likes romance in shows, I think AoY is actually unique in that it covers a lot of topics.

Fitting in, balancing responsibility vs happiness, loving yourself, letting go of a toxic love, owning your choices...

How rare is it to have a female friendship in kdramas that's not wrecked by fighting over a guy? And here we have five girls trying to figure each other out and live harmoniously, despite having heavily opposing values in life. This show did more in 6 episodes making me realize the POV of people I used to hate in real life, than living with them for years ever did. XD

(TL;DR I love Age of Youth)

+100!!

I really get Moonlight's points at the beginning of this OT, but I do also think that they are trying to be bolder and more in-your-face with the discussion precisely cos it's rare(r) in K-dramas to portray women talking openly about sex.

However, I also think that many of us on Dramabeans straddle the drama spheres of many countries, watching American dramas alongside British ones, Korean, Taiwanese, Chinese, Cantonese ones, etc., so it's also very easy to see "dramaland" as a whole conglomeration of increasingly-similar terrain/outlook... And, so again, I get Moonlight's complaint about AoY, and also mary's defense. Both very valid.

You explain it really well, i also feel like stuck in the middle although more inclined to see how the mystery unravel. With the way W2W progress, i keep thinking that i understand, in my brain, its concept and how things going the way they are; on the other hand, it doesn't tug me emotionally & there is always something itching and incomplete which prevent me to actually immerse fully to the show.

Guess it's the pain of watching it on air? Maybe this kind of show is better enjoyed on marathon?

AoY - i don't mind at all with its focus on romance and sex, simply because it fits with the characters, their background and their personal stories. For me, culture plays big part in this. HS student in there spent their whole life studying & preparing for college that it must be feeling like heaven for freedom once they get into it. Adding the relationship nature in korean college and natural curiousity regarding sex topic which is still taboo to talk in public, it is totally not weird. Eventhough the romance plays big part, they still wrap it with other revelant issues which is totally relatable and fresh.

I am totally in love with this drama though, my whole comment is probably biased and invalid ?

regarding W, I don't really know why they should be together but I feel they should...
then I read one comment that explaining about the hints that they are attracted to each other since the beginning,
it may look like rushed but since I kinda feel it, it occurred to me that they just didn't pursue it further, every hints of attraction got cut out in the plot but when you only look at that plot, at least for me,
it does make sense when Kdrama treats a look, a gentle care and their little gesture as a form of affection,
it doesn't really play as the romantic tension but an attraction that lead to wanting each other

for doctors? it probably because they said so, I had no idea how they get attracted unless from the sweet memories and their physical ,
or I get their love but I can't see it as deep as the show try to convince me

just my 2 cents,

I admit that I am a little disappointed in the romance side of W because the relationship isn't growing organically like the one in QIHM. It's like the two main characters in W are having fun playing at romance, at least when they forget about the mysterious killer and that Kang Chul's universe is a web comic (....or, is it?). It's like flirtation, but with major kisses and Kang Chul's insistance that he would really like it if things went the 19+ route.

I know the writer can put some depth into the central romantic relationship (as she did with QIHM and Nine), so I hope that will happen over time.

As far as balance of time between the romantic relationship and the overall mystery/mythology of the show, I think it's just about where it needs to be. This last episode was lighter than usual because things will get darker in the next episode.

W is actually kind of tongue in cheek. I mean the last episode playfully poked fun at romances by offering Options 1 to 4. It also has the random kisses throughout in comic book style instead of the standard slow build up. So it both delivers on the genre and subverts it.

How much of the relationship is being pulled by YeonJoo as the creator? Which is to say, are we taking it for granted that Kang Chul has free will when, in fact, he doesn't? That she is exerting a pull on this story to shape it seems obvious. So, you have to ask whether or not what he fills is legitimate versus her influence on the storyline.

(I love that this show makes me ask these questions.)

I honestly don't know how to explain it. I've never questioned the romance in either show. I'll attempt it.

Doctors I felt that Hong3 had non-predatory feelings for her. Hye-jung had respect and admiration for an older man, only realizing as the years passed that she was interested in him romantically. As she told Seo Woo in high school "their relationship wasn't like that (romantic)". Even if romantic thoughts entered HJ's head she knew they couldn't be acted upon.
Now 13 years later, he is still very much (almost a broken amount) the same guy he was before. They have witty banter, intellectual and meaningful discussions, and a devoted interest in each other.

As for W2W, I think the viewers either agree with the romance or not. I can't think of anything in specific to say for why I approve of it. Maybe like @Ian mentioned the attraction that was there from the beginning. And my same list about Hong3/Hye Jung.
But I think overall it's like @mary said, it's a divided audience reaction. Personally, I don't mind the time spent on the romance but I don't think it needs more fleshing out. I think the kisses have been a bit much, but that's probably just the skeptic in me. Otherwise the relationship has had a steady development in my opinion. But I want to focus on the mystery about the amount we have thus far.

I don't know if that helped but that's my addition.

Thanks for your reply!

The shift from respecting-teacher to seeing him as equal, possible romantic interest is something i don't feel it is fleshed enough. But they spend so many episodes being cute with each other and knowing e/o more and whatnot which kinda negate my initial complaint ?

Like i said in Mary's reply above, my brain can proceed their romance and totally agree that they need to be together but still something is missing not knowing what to point at.

Am I the only one who's disappointed in what a bust The Flower in Prison is turning out to be? All we are doing now id umping from revenge plot to revenge plot. I've skimmed the last four episodes and barely missed anything. This show had so much promise. It was what got me into KDramas in the first place. I'm quite sad. :(

I've been reading comments about "W" recaps having a lot of comments and indeed they are a lot, so is it the only drama with most comments on it's recaps?

Nope. I think City Hunter comments were also huge for that time. Then King 2 Hearts broke the record. Then Healer? (Just guessing from memory. I'm too sleepy to double check. Hehe sorry)

Yup mary, it's right, I checked. Hehe.

If we're talking about most comments from the start, then yes W takes the throne but I think DB has a lot more readers now compared to the other dramas which were 2011-2014/15.

But I'm still amazed at the Healer comments development, the first seven episodes have 100something comments only and then ep.8 happened and boom over 1000 and all consecutive episodes also have thousands of comments with the final episode having over 11k now (and still growing), it's insane. Lol

The Healer final ep is a bit of outlier cause beanies hang out in that like an Open Thread. Probably, the Healer-related discussion is closer to the second to last episode. But it's still HIGH.

More people are still starting to watch Healer for the first time and they still come by to leave a comment and are bowled over to find that people like me still drop by to read their comments!!! Heheheh! (Don't worry, I do have a life!).

Glad to see anyone who'll visit or chat!

W.
Just want to say I can totally feel the love between KC and YJ.
YJ has been a fan of the KC for 7 years. She already loved him for many years although just as a webtoon character to begin with.
KC was created as her ideal type, and she has feelings for him since day one.
YJ is the one who knows him the best, his feelings, his pain, his struggle. Now she sees him real. That’s like dream come true right?
About the shooting incident, YJ heard the whole conversation between KC and her father and she knew what happened between them.
And I think the writer spent half of the 6th ep to explain how she could forgive KC for doing that. Maybe not everyone can accept that, but I can.

From KC’s stand point, this woman saved him a few times, she is cute and pretty. She treats him as a real person. She understood his feelings that he never told anybody else (in W world).
She is the only one who cared about him when he was ready to end his own life. She confessed her love to him wholeheartedly.

Is it really that hard to fall in love? For me their romance is naturally developed. I’ll be completely heartbroken if they can’t be together in the end.

After watching Cheese in the Trap (the drama) I began reading the webtoon. Does anyone have any suggestions for other good dramas based on webtoons I should be watching or even webtoons I should be reading? I REALLY enjoyed CITT...until the departure from the source material that threw off the storyline.

Also, I know it is probably the cheeseball in me, but is anyone else kinda hyped to see Cinderella and Four Knights? I've seen the comparison to Boys over Flowers and since that was my second K-Drama ever it makes me feel nostalgic.

Of the recent ones in that list, I've seen Misaeng and Awl (both great). I think Bring It On, Ghost is also loved by those who are watching it. I'm too scared to start it yet though. :|

I don't know what you've seen already, but my favorite k-drama thrillers are Liar Game (Korean version), The Devil and White Christmas. They're all quite different from each other - Liar Game is fast paced and fun, The Devil is serious and contemplative, and White Christmas edges more towards horror, but they're all excellent. Or if you want a mix of thrills and romance, go with Healer.

Hi @wonhwa

I'm glad to see that you like Liar Game. I like it too but was wondering why it was considered a badly produced show by some.

If I'm not wrong, you are in stage direction/production, so I'm glad to know that you find Liar Game not too bad, on the production end. :)

And of course I absolutely still love Healer... no contest! :D

I loved Liar Game. I felt the production values were fine, if not spectacular, but the writing and acting were the real draw. Personally, while I appreciate lovely visuals, I'll take a well-written, well-acted show any day over one that's pretty but hollow. Healer's another example where the directing, from a visual perspective, wasn't particularly noteworthy, but the content, characterizations and chemistry were awesome!

My top list is too long but I always recommend older ones since I feel like people already know all the good ones that have come out in the past 3 years...so these go a little bit further back but SO worth watching:

- Soulmate
- Time Between Dog and Wolf
- Dal Ja's Spring
- 9 End 2 Outs
- Thank You (more melo but top notch acting)
- The Legend (fantasy saeguk but so so good)
- Pasta
- Cain & Abel

Try "Still Marry Me" (or "The woman who still wants to marry"). It a story about 3 friends who are still single in their thirthies. It's very very funny and you get several love stories and a great friendship between 3 women in one drama.

Guys! I've only posted to DB a handfull of times, but wanted to share my excitement: I just saw the trailer for "Better Late than Never" while watching the Olympics on NBC. It's the US version of Grandpas Over Flowers (which I adore).

Unfortunately, I think it will make me cringe a little. I love the concept, but firstly, our old guys don't necessarily know each other IRL as well (I think) as their Korean counterparts, and secondly, these guys are known for being loud, brash and even obnoxious characters even by US standards. It looks very "bull in a china shop." I do love Shatner and his risqué jokes; I cannot stomach Terry Bradshaw.

Anyone have any thoughts? I will give it a shake as they are supposed to be on some Japanese and Korean talkshows, and it's only 4 episodes.

Yay! Open Thread. Now I can ask a question that has been niggling on my mind for quite some time. Why do Koreans pour water into their rice? For example, Another Miss Oh, Episode 18, around the 49 minute mark. Oh Hae Young pours water into her rice. I also Song Mi-ryung do it in You're the Best, Lee Soon-shin, but I figured she was an actress and was probably always trying to lose weight and pouring water in her rice makes sense for her character. Not so much the case for Oh Hae Young.

I would think it is just to wet the rice or make sure all the rice is eaten? Cooked rice tends to dry up or crust if hot as you eat so you need some kind of liquid to soak it and make it edible and make sure you don't waste it. Or maybe they were making sungnyung - though I can't say as I have never seen it made.

Required fields are marked *

Lol, I'm not sure if that's a culture or anything of that sort, but I do it too whenever I feel there is no wet (?) dishes to go with my rice. So I don't think it's limited to only Koreans?

Hi! So I just started watching Five Children and I really like it suprisingly because I never thought I'd have the patience for a 50+ drama. I guess I am a little impatient because I want Yeon Tae/Sang Min to get together already and Mi Jung/Sang Tae to get married so we can have blended famiky hijinks.

Anyone else watching it? I'm on episode 21 and would love to have someone to chat about it with. :)

Hello, Roserayne! I've tried to get through 50-episode family drama before but I've never been able to see one out until the end. I lose my paitence for the characters. I tried 'Glamorous Temptation' and 'My Daughter Seo-young', but neither of them were really to my taste. Seo-young was quite interesting to begin with, but my Episode 10 I was furiously blinking at the screen, wondering if something was wrong with my eyes or whether they were actually getting married! I've seen an episode of 'Five Kids', and it was pretty cute, but it wasn't enough to motivate to watch anymore. Are you enjoying it?

I am on episode 33. Very enjoyable drama. I find as time goes on I am enjoying the family type of dramas more than any others, though I do love rom coms as well. If a drama doesn't have any romance in it, I tend to lose interest, which is probably why I am having so much difficulty getting into Japanese dramas.
