Fantasy romance Goblin secures main cast and PD

So it’ll be a reunion between writer and PD after all: PD Lee Eung-bok of KBS’s monster hit Descended From the Sun has been confirmed for Goblin, writer Kim Eun-sook’s next drama over at tvN. PD Lee very recently quit his post at KBS, and as suspected, the timing coincided perfectly for him to reunite with Kim Eun-sook on her new fantasy romance, which has also now confirmed its main cast.

Gong Yoo (Big) stars in this modern-day fantasy series as a goblin, a protector of souls who guides people to the afterlife once they’ve passed. He doesn’t want to be immortal anymore and seeks a human bride, played by Kim Go-eun (Cheese in the Trap), in order to end his immortality. I hope there’s going to be more to her bride character than is ever given in these press releases, because I like these actors and I want them to get meaty characters.

The drama is about the goblin’s strange living arrangement with Lee Dong-wook (Bubblegum), an amnesiac reaper who takes souls. His love interest will be played by Yoo Inna (One More Happy Ending), whose character is a beautiful, sunny woman loved by all men. While encountering hardship in her reckless life, she’ll meet the reaper and begin to change. I can see them being so cute together, especially if he’s a grumpypants. Or is that just my prejudice, that all reapers are grumpy?

Also recently confirmed is Yook Sung-jae (Village: Secret of Achiara), who has signed on to play Gong Yoo’s nephew, a third-generation chaebol heir with a rebellious streak. He’s a troublemaker, but he’ll begin to live a different life because of his uncle. Well, the good news is that this really DOES make Yook Sung-jae Gong Yoo’s puppy, so yay for that.

The bad news: This probably means that the goblin is also a chaebol, at least one family branch removed? It’s not necessarily a bad thing in and of itself, but historically the rich heroes in this writer’s past dramas have been jerks with few redeeming qualities, so I’m suddenly nervous about that. Please, drama gods, if this is true, make the goblin shunned by his family so he can grow up poor!

Goblin plans to hold a script reading on August 30, and begin shoots in September in Canada. It’ll air on Fridays and Saturdays in December.

My first thought as well - tons of acting talent, boatloads of personality..now we just need the good Kim Eun Sook (City Hall, DOS) to show up, rather than the bad Kim Eun Sook (Heirs, AGD).
On an aside, it sounds like Yoo In-Nah will be reprising her sunny guy-magnet personality from A Secret Garden.

Does DOS really qualify as "good" KES?

Really skeptical about the script/writing for "Goblin," but I guess if maligned actors can show dramatic improvement, so can writers.

DOS was also co-written, there was another screenwriter - i honestly believe he wrote the better lines...I never got into a drama written by KES in the past until DOS came along. It makes me wish Kim Won Suk was involved in the script writing as well...

Nonetheless, Gong Yoo is back on the small screen; fingers crossed that this will be a good one!

yeah, it's good, but I don't think Gong Yoo will match well with Kim Go Eun. And also, I'm still wondering why they did media play with Hello Venus's Nara and After School's Nana. At the end, there's no place for those two beauties, so sad.

@Lea Totally agree! So many big screen A-list actors have returned to dramaland this year (Gong yoo, Han hyojoo, Kim hyesoo, Song Hyekyo, Jun Jihyun (soon to return) etc.). Its been so long since we've had a year of such good drama offerings! 2016 daebak!:)

How can this happen. I would have already jump ship at Gong Yoo (Coffee Prince) and Kim Go Eun (Coin Locker Girl). But then add Lee Dong Wook (My Girl) Yoo In Na (Queen In Hyuns Man) and Yook Sung Jae ( Who Are You).

I know I'm naming such old dramas for Lee Dong Wook and Gong Yoo bc I am pretending they're recent dramas dont exist (ehem Blade Man, Hotel Transylvannia Shit for Lee Dong Wook and Yoo In Na)

Here's to positive December. Come fast come come come.

I don't like KES dramas but the cast is so sos so good.

And i adored KGE in CITT. So excited. But i have read so many awful thingz about her casting. Why so mean knetz? They are really a vicious bunch.

To be honest, it's always the casts that makes her recent dramas hits. Writing alone, they're nothing to rave about.

0

Required fields are marked *

I fail to understand the PR decisions of some actresses and their agencies when it comes to controversies. KGE would probably be viewed a lot more favorably if she had kept quiet during the CITT mess, but her giving that interview that was interpreted as a diss toward PHJ (who is well loved all around) was just a bad move that unfortunately damaged her image in a lot of people's eyes.

I think the hate she's getting is ridiculous and way out of proportion to her perceived offence, but she really should have known better than to stick her foot in it just then.

Anyway, I hope she turns it around again the way she did as Seol. She's a good actress.

Btw, it not just hate for the CITT controversy. Its the same thing as before when she first got cast for cheese -> She is not pretty enough *roll eye*

yeah, "visuals", my butt.

I'm sick of the extent to which looks are prized over talent - and contrary to what people say, good looks themselves are not a talent, in the absence of other abilities.

0

@pogo

So true.... but also, I find her very beautiful. So when they rant about how she does not look good, i'm left scratching my head. I know beauty is subjective but in which world is she not pretty? I don't get the korean beauty standards at all.

0

I love KGE's looks, she gives off such a unique vibe and i'm glad she decided to keep her monolids instead of getting PS. Such a breathe of fresh air in an industry where practically most celebrities have PS.

0

I hope she learnt her lesson, stay quiet at those times will be the best, I don't want this kind of issue give her obstacles in the industry, as she is way too talented to be wasted for this.

Ppl who keeps pointing at her looks, have nothing better to do.

Maybe as Mary said, the whole family is immortal like him. But then if you're super duper rich wouldn't that be suspect? Or they can change their appearances per generation? Hm, maybe he was a chaebol human first and then became the Goblin and his family knows his secret. Or they don't know and he's living as a filthy rich recluse and Sung Jae doesn't know Gong Yoo is his uncle.

Either that or he is adopted. Or he brainwashes rich families to make them believe he is their son.

Or I've watched too many dramas to think of all these possible plot points. lol

BTOB comeback end of September or early October (plus Japan promotions) which will most likely cause conflicts with schedule but CUBE said they worked-out Sungjae's schedule so he can shoot and participate with promotions. For sure he'll miss on some music shows (like when he was doing The Village) but they already turned down Moonlight Drawn by Clouds and Shopping King Louie. This is just too good of an opportunity for him to just say no to plus people have been asking for CUBE for his drama (just as people are also looking for Doojoon's drama)

Yes, she does do the chaebol jerk over and over again which makes it all the more ironic that -- to me -- one of the flaws of DOTS is that SJK played almost the perfect man. It's like KES didn't know how to write a character who is a nice guy but yet has his own issues and flaws. This sounds interesting, and I'll give it a go. I really do like that some writers are moving away from the love triangle.

Can't believe these duo (PD Lee Eung Bok and Writer Kim Eun Sook) will have another production collaboration after 2016 Mega Hit Drama "Descendants of the Sun." I have feeling that this PD will manage this upcoming drama after his resign news from KBS.

But, I have few doubts about this drama. Usually, when one project is big success and the next project can't success as one before (as actors or PD or writer). Second, this story want to tell about immortality? Is it like "Twilight" with twist? and third, How many episodes will air? Too long or too short might not good.

Hope this drama bring more expectations and I Believe in KES' writer magic. Hehehe

I seriously hope KES treats the female characters with some sort of respect. She did well with DoTS, but I suspect most of that was SHK pushing for a better character and her cowriter. We'll see if she goes back to her old ways I guess.

I agree, Kang Mo Yeon being a decent female character KES-wise was probably partly due to SHK. I remember reading about how they had long talks over details and changes they would put into her character to make her more than just a wallflower. Hopefully she continues on the strong female lead path for this drama.

hmm lee dong-wook as second lead. he's always done leading roles hasn't he? at least since my girl? but i'm guessing at point there are probably few actors who wouldn't jump at the chance to be in one of the kim eun-sook's dramas.

i gotta say though, the star power of the cast isn't quite as strong as some of the writer's previous dramas. does this have anything to do with the fact that it's airing on cable? not sure what to expect from this show, but it'll be interesting to see.

i liked yoo inna in secret garden and queen in-hyun's man, but she's been annoying in everything after in-hyun. it's a rarer case where an actor starts off in my good books and then does a complete 180. not to mention she did the worst MC job ever on get it beauty.

Seriously? Gong Yoo, Lee Dong Wook, Kim Go - Eun, Yoo In Na, and Yook Sung Jae is not powerful enough for you? I mean, I would watch anything Gong Yoo's in over Lee Min Ho's (no hate), and Kim Go-Eun is a really good actress who can really really deliver and all the others are not-unknown actors. Even Yook Sung Jae has proven himself in School 2015. How much star power do you even need?

I'm so sad now. Why do KES always make such unappealing (to me) plots then pair it with such amazing casts?
I don't think I've seen a single KES drama that I felt to be good writing. It's all in the casts, she's always so lucky with her casts, probably because they know that even if it might not be a good drama, it'll most likely end up hugely popular. *sigh* I wish all good actors would do like SIG and choose dramas based on the writing, not popularity. Utopian, I know...

*tries to forget that this will be Gong Yoo's small screen comeback, so I won't be tempted to watch it anyway and be disappointed and annoyed*

(Sorry for the pessimism LOL)

Yeah, some actors really know how to pick good dramas (although, of course, no actor has only been in good ones). There aren't many actors' role-picking judgement I trust almost implicitly, but SIG is one of them.

True, DoTS had great cinematography and as far as I remember Secret Garden wasn't too bad in that department either. It all depends on the director and camera men they'll have on board.

(Sidenote. I just checked KES' wiki page to see what else she'd done and noticed this: "2014 2nd Asia Rainbow TV Awards: Outstanding Scriptwriter (The Heirs)". Hooowwww????

Wow quite a stellar cast. Surprise to see Yoo in na. It's been awhile. Her star dimmed alittle after Queen In Hyun's man. I'm interested to see Gong Yoo again on the small screen. His last in Big wasn't my cup of tea. Kim Go eun I'm still on the fence about her. Currently I didn't enjoy her role in tvN drama, but that could be the script and not her problem. Interesting to see another fantasy drama. We have quite a good array of k dramas this year. Shaping up K-fantastic-2016

But... but.. how can a goblin be a chaebol?

I can't compute.

Can't we have a drama where the male lead is not rich. Yunno, like normal human.

Nope, cause apparently all rich daddys of SK corporations give birth to hot, young, perfect-in-every-way-but-just-happen-to-be-single sons who needs a non-rich girl to cure their jerkiness lol U+1F602

Honestly I dont care about the writing though, but I do love all casts. But this time around, I think I will love second pairs more. I am more excited for the romance between LDW and YIN. I just hope they won't waste Gong Yoo & Kim Go Eun here.

Yeah, I feel like the second lead chemistry will be far better, so I'm anticipating it more than the lead pair's. But I hope and trust that both GY an KGE acting skills are enough to save the drama if the writing were messy.

The pilot is a mess. They even can't describe it well. Why tvN picked it up and turns it to special projects.

Just noticed Gongyoo Looks like Chen bollin, since china loves chen bollin maybe they will love gongyoo too, so curious will this drama can be as succes as Kim Eun sook past dramas and will sold with high pays?
The cast more like AGD days type, since Gongyoo,Lee dongwook, Yoo inna are somewhere old and mature, If you compared to Heirs, and dots.

I don't really like Kim eun sook Chessy writers but she is Loved by South Korea, She got that magic touch! I think everyone is hoping that Their Favourites will cast in kim eun sook dramas no mather how bad the story is, who cares since after the dramas end then it makes the cast get the popularity, Cf deals, and going to Awards Ceremony with that proud feeling!!!

I ever read on shoompi that Kim en sook is A fan of CN blue, Superman return, Running man and Seohyun from SNSD well After A gentleman dinity cameo, and she offered My bae the role of Choi young do first well well hmm... I can assumed that Kim eun sook is literally is Yonghwa fan, so I hope she cast him in her future project pretty please hahaha I'm sorry Yonghwa You need that Kim eun sook magic!!! well ve well god please make it happen

Then Good Luck for The Goblin!!!!!

It seems odd to me that both first lead actors will act together in the same drama !!
I also wanted another actress with GY , like more mature and well known one like GHJ.
Anyway I miss GY so I'll stick around

I was just thinking about Lee Dong Wook the other day, glad to see him! Amnesiac reaper? (And most likely grumpy, girlfriday, I agree.) Only in kdramaland and I'm looking forward to it!
