W–Two Worlds: Episode 2
by girlfriday
I already love this show. I loved it yesterday, but I was fully prepared for a slowdown in the second episode, in case all the cool parts were blown on the awesome start out of the gate. But not only does our heroine get cuter, our hero gets smarter, and the conflict becomes riskier, twistier, and just plain fun. We thought we were headed into a story about a father and daughter changing the fate of a comic book hero, but… is it possible that it’s the reverse, and he’s the one changing the course of their lives?
EPISODE 2 RECAP
Our heroine Yeon-joo, surgical resident and daughter to legendary manhwa artist, gives us a concise recap introducing us to the hero of her father’s webtoon, Kang Chul. Helpful, that.
She’s clearly been thinking a lot on the subject, ever since she got sucked into what she believes to be the parallel universe where her father’s webtoon W exists for real. Her bed is strewn with old volumes of W, like she’s been up all night trying to confirm that she isn’t crazy.
She calls Dad’s assistant Su-bong again to suggest her latest theory—that Dad was kidnapped into Kang Chul’s universe just like she was, by that mysterious hooded figure. But Su-bong has had it up to here with noona’s crazy talk of parallel universes, and speaks to her like she’s got brain damage: “They’re drawings, that we drew ourselves! I drew each and every one of the backgrounds with my own hands! They’re drawings. Drawings. DRAWINGS.” I really love this character.
He rants until his face turns purple, insisting that he knows Yeon-joo’s father better than she does, and he knows without a doubt that the latest issues are her father’s artwork. Despite his staff doing all the support work, they can’t draw the main characters—only Dad can do that, and Su-bong would perceive the slightest difference if anyone tried to copy his style.
Yeon-joo is silent for a moment, and then sighs that she knows how Galileo Galilei and Dae Jang Geum felt. Ha.
On the other end, Su-bong suddenly says, “Teacher…” and Dad walks into the workshop, looking like he hasn’t slept for days. Yeon-joo hears them and goes running out of the house at light speed, lying to her mom that the hospital called. Over breakfast, Mom’s sister sighs over all the money Mom could’ve had if she hadn’t divorced Yeon-joo’s father.
Yeon-joo dashes over to Dad’s workshop and Su-bong says they still don’t know where he was. Yeon-joo heads into Dad’s office and chides him for making them worry, and Dad is frustratingly vague about what he did last night: “I went somewhere.”
Yeon-joo asks, “Where?” The question is rife with meaning, but again Dad is evasive. But then he asks Yeon-joo if she’s okay and not hurt, and seems relieved to hear that nothing happened to her. The fact that he asks her that intrigues her. Hm, does he know where she’s been?
She brings up his webtoon, and Dad says he heard about her wild ideas from Su-bong, and quickly explains that he just needed a new female character to introduce and couldn’t think of one, so he modeled the character after her.
Yeon-joo asks if Dad really drew the last two issues himself, and the air suddenly gets tense as he asks incredulously who would’ve drawn them if not him. She’s clearly struck some sort of nerve, because he asks the question like a threat, and Yeon-joo immediately backs off.
Dad prepares to work, and Yeon-joo prods him to rest first. But he sighs, “I’m sick of it. I’m so sick of it that I want to hurry up and finish so I can rest.” She finds the statement odd, but turns back to give him a little encouragement before heading out.
Dad’s expression turns pensive as soon as she leaves the room. He works into the evening on the next issue, and suddenly calls Su-bong into his office to research a poison that’s easy to obtain in a hospital. Oh noes…
Yeon-joo is so distracted with thoughts of the webtoon that she doesn’t realize she’s lost the office bet to go fetch snacks at the coffee shop. Her resident friend Seok-bum wonders why she’s so spacey lately.
Yeon-joo calls Su-bong again to check on Dad. When she asks about this next issue’s storyline, Su-bong tells her furtively that her father is back to killing off Kang Chul, and she yelps in alarm.
In Kang Chul’s world, he’s fast asleep in his hospital bed, with bodyguard hyung Do-yoon keeping watch at night. Elsewhere a nurse gathers supplies in her cart, and gets a mysterious call from someone, who orders her to do “it” now. She looks around and reaches for the drawer marked Potassium. The image melds into a drawing, and we see a reflection of Su-bong’s hand, drawing in the background material.
Yeon-joo asks how Dad is planning to kill off Kang Chul, and Su-bong tells her all about the nurse, the unknown caller, and the potassium injection she plans to swap into his IV. And in his office, Dad draws the nurse as she fills the syringe.
Yeon-joo paces with worry, but talks herself into letting it go: “It’s a manhwa. A manhwa. Live or die, it’s a manhwa hero.” But then she remembers saving Kang Chul’s life with her own two hands, covered in his blood.
She picks up the phone and calls Dad this time, and asks him point-blank why Kang Chul has to die. Dad gets prickly about her meddling in his work, but Yeon-joo argues that it’s all so futile, when Kang Chul swore he’d get revenge and catch his family’s killer, but has yet to do so.
Dad argues that there’s nothing that says he has to get revenge before dying (nothing except like all the laws of good storytelling!), and says it’s his prerogative to kill off his main character however he likes.
Yeon-joo says readers will be so disappointed when he was just saved two episodes ago, and with so much difficulty at that, and Dad accidentally lets slip: “So why did you do such a needless thing?” Omo.
She catches the slip right away and asks what he means, and this time no amount of denying it will get her to stop. Yeon-joo asks if Dad really didn’t draw the latest issues. She points out that he couldn’t have known what she was wearing yesterday—they were new clothes, so how could Dad have drawn them so accurately?
When he has no response, Yeon-joo finally says, “You’ve seen him too—the living Kang Chul.” She says that his blood was warm and his heart was beating, and asks how it’s possible that he’s alive and real.
None of this seems to surprise Dad, but it makes him more determined than ever: “That’s why… that’s why I have to end his life, right now!” Yeon-joo shouts, “No! That’s murder!” Dad is enraged when she calls it murder, and suddenly the background behind Yeon-joo starts to morph…
She doesn’t notice, and screams frantically into her phone that knowing someone is alive and killing them—that’s murder. But on Dad’s end, the phone connection goes dead.
It takes Yeon-joo a while before she looks around and realizes that the coffee shop she just stepped out of is no longer there. Now in Kang Chul’s world, she’s standing in front of a television that’s broadcasting the evening news. She hears that Kang Chul’s surgery was successful, and they’re looking for a female doctor who was at the scene as the prime suspect in his attack.
She grabs the first cab she sees and asks to go to the hospital named in the news broadcast. And at the same time in Dad’s webtoon workshop, one of the assistants asks if it’s okay to use a picture of Yeon-joo’s hospital and just change the name of it to use in the webtoon.
We see her replace the hospital sign in her drawing, and then when Yeon-joo gets in the cab, the driver looks at her like she’s nuts and says that’s where they already are. I love these little touches—they’re so fun.
Up in Kang Chul’s hospital room, the assassin nurse nervously enters to administer meds, and neither of the boys seems to notice how suspicious she looks.
Yeon-joo can’t get any information out of the hospital receptionist, but then looks around and realizes that this hospital is laid out exactly like her hospital, and casually joins a group of doctors to gain entry into the VIP ward.
The nurse looks terrified as she checks the syringe one last time, and then she sticks it into Kang Chul’s IV. The image turns into a drawing, and we see Dad working frantically to get this done…
But suddenly a new image appears before him that he didn’t draw. Line by line, it renders on his screen, and the colors start to fill in, just as Yeon-joo bursts into Kang Chul’s hospital room. She runs over to Chul and takes out the syringe and asks if he’s okay. That moment gets rendered into the next frame of the webtoon, and Dad gasps.
Yeon-joo explains that the nurse was trying to poison him with potassium, and of course the nurse runs, with Chul’s henchmen chasing after her. Yeon-joo is relieved to hear that the injection didn’t happen yet, and Chul asks how she knew about the attempted poisoning. She hems and haws and goes with: “Uh… just coincidentally, as I was passing! The nurse, she looked suspicious!” Pfft, smooooth.
Yeon-joo tries to sneak away once the doctor arrives, but Kang Chul grabs her arm and calls out her name. She tries to deny that she’s Oh Yeon-joo, and Chul smirks and points to the name written plainly on her lab coat. He smiles up at her and says, “Oh Yeon-joo-sshi, we finally meet.”
Dad watches the speech bubble appear in Kang Chul’s newest frame, and buries his head in his hands with a heavy sigh.
Chul asks about the hospital where she supposedly works, and Yeon-joo says it’s the hospital where she used to work before it closed down, making her currently unemployed. That still doesn’t explain what she’s doing here, and Yeon-joo says she saw on TV that he was looking for her.
Chul’s assistant So-hee barges in and peppers him with a million worried questions. Yeon-joo recognizes So-hee from the webtoon as the female lead and Kang Chul’s friend since high school, and then looks over at Do-yoon and realizes he’s the fighter-turned-bodyguard.
So-hee points out that Yeon-joo IS pretty, and they got the police sketch wrong, no thanks to Chul. He pays her lip-service and agrees that she’s pretty, and Yeon-joo looks over at him with this whatchoo-talkin-bout face.
She flashes back to reading the scene in the webtoon when Chul was last talking about her, and says he needn’t pay her empty compliments, quoting him verbatim: “You said that if I were considered pretty, dogs and cows (a common metaphor, meaning anyone on the street) would be pretty.”
She realizes her mistake the second she says it, and the others in the room exchange furtive glances. So-hee asks how she knew that, and Yeon-joo asks to speak to Kang Chul alone. So-hee is against the idea since they haven’t even verified Yeon-joo’s identity and the cops are on the way, but Chul says she saved his life and that’s enough.
So-hee and Do-yoon agree that there’s something weird about Yeon-joo, and it’s suspicious that she keeps showing up in moments like this, as if she’s in on it with the culprit.
In the room, Yeon-joo asks for Chul’s help, and he offers to give her a big reward for saving his life. She doesn’t want money, and simply asks for his help to get out of here quietly, because she can’t be questioned by the police.
She asks him not to ask why and just help her, but he has too many questions for her and thinks it’s better for her to clear her name, because the cops think she’s the killer’s accomplice. Yeon-joo says he knows that she’s not an accomplice, and quotes him again, saying that he knows just by his gut feeling.
That gives him pause, and he points out that Yeon-joo seems to know a lot about him. She doesn’t try to deny it, and even adds that he thinks she’s the key to his life. That really piques his curiosity, and he asks what her deal is.
Yeon-joo promises to tell him next time, and pleads with him to help her get away just this once. He relents and has So-hee and Do-yoon meet the detectives downstairs to keep them distracted.
Chul is too curious about Yeon-joo to let her go without a promise of when they’ll meet again, so she says she’ll see him when he gets discharged from the hospital. Chul gives her a spare cell phone since her numbers were all disconnected, and she asks how he can trust that she’ll keep her promise. He says it’s just a gut feeling.
Before she goes, Chul takes back the comment he made about her beauty last time, insisting that it was dark then, and he thinks she’s pretty now. She smirks and says he’s just saying that, and she knows that he compliments women all the time even when he’s not interested in them. He laughs and says this is getting really interesting, and he can’t wait until they meet again.
One of his other guards sneaks Yeon-joo out the back way just before the cops arrive, and Yeon-joo ditches her lab coat in the dumpster before reaching a bus stop. She sits to catch her breath and decides to wait it out, since the last time she was in this world, it was only for thirty minutes.
She figures that if she waits the same amount of time, the “To be continued” chyron will appear again, ending the episode and sending her back to her world.
Except this time, she waits and waits… and nothing happens. After thirty minutes she looks at her watch, and all of a sudden the hands start moving forward rapidly, spinning and spinning, while the world changes around her from night to day and over again. Flash-forward?
When her watch stops spinning, it’s suddenly daylight, and Yeon-joo wonders what in the hell just happened. She then gets a call from Kang Chul, wanting to meet. She’s so confused—to her, it’s only been thirty minutes since they last spoke. She sputters incoherently, not knowing what to make of it.
But he insists on picking her up and pulls up in his fancy sports car with a giant smile. He wonders how she happens to be right here when he was just discharged from the hospital, and she gapes, “Already?” He points out that two months of being bedridden was a long time to him.
She’s shocked to hear that two whole months have passed, and gets into his car. He reaches around her to put her seatbelt on and asks how she’s been, and her inner monologue is hilarious: “How have I been? It hasn’t even been thirty minutes!”
She wonders to herself how two months could have passed, but Yeon-joo thinks it through and realizes that in a manhwa world, time might speed up according to the story, and since Kang Chul is the main character, it makes sense that his recovery time in a hospital would get skipped in the narrative. LOL. I love that she’s thinking this through with story logic.
She wonders, “What about me? Have I been missing for two months?” Chul looks over at her and notices that she’s wearing the same clothes that she was wearing two months ago, and she cringes to have him point it out. He makes a stop at a clothing store, and despite her protests, he argues that she’s sweating in her winter clothes right now.
People mill about to catch a glimpse of Kang Chul and Yeon-joo, and she stands there awkwardly in front of the clothes, not knowing what to do. So-hee texts Chul and guesses that he couldn’t find Yeon-joo because she conned him into escaping two months ago, but she’s surprised when he replies that he’s with Yeon-joo now.
In the dressing room, Yeon-joo paces around wondering why this episode is so freaking long, when the last one was over in thirty minutes. She peers into the mirror in alarm, wondering if time will continue to pass this way. Ha, yeah I don’t think they made anti-aging products for that.
But then it dawns on her that this is a serial manhwa, so something significant has to happen to the hero in order for the episode to end. She racks her brains for an incident worthy of a cliffhanger, and comes up with an idea.
She marches out of the dressing room with purpose and walks up to Kang Chul in front of everyone and slaps him, HARD, right across the face. She waits for his reaction and thinks to herself, “That was a shock, right? That’s ending material, right?”
Only he doesn’t really show a strong reaction other than confusion, and Yeon-joo grows increasingly nervous as she looks around for that damned “To be continued” chyron… and can’t find it anywhere. Hahaha. Much to her horror, the scene just continues.
He stares at her curiously and asks why he bought her clothes and then got slapped for it, and what he’s supposed to make of this. She just shrinks in mortification and ekes out, “I’m sorry!” and runs away. He stops her, and she gets another idea and wonders, “Could it be…?”
And then she lurches forward and kisses him. Eeeee! Time slows, and Chul’s eyes widen in surprise.
When she pulls away, he’s still standing there like a statue. Yeon-joo looks around and thinks, “Oh no, is this not it either?” He starts to ask what she’s doing, but then she sees it: to be continued! The chyron starts to get rendered on the scene, and Yeon-joo runs for the dressing room before it finishes being written, so that he won’t see her vanish.
So-hee’s been on the phone with Chul this whole time and asks what’s going on, and Chul just chuckles and says that Yeon-joo is a force to be reckoned with. The way he describes her personality type is: “I’m the crazy bitch in this town.” Heh.
He seems more amused than anything, though his confusion grows when he looks for Yeon-joo in the dressing room and finds her gone. She left her old clothes behind along with her hospital ID tag, and he picks it up with a smile.
Yeon-joo returns to her universe still wearing her new dress, and she stands there under the awning of the coffee shop for a while, processing what just happened. She reaches up to touch her lips, remembering the kiss.
She finally returns to the hospital, and Seok-bum complains about her taking so long to go get coffee. They wonder if it was because she stopped to buy a new dress, and Yeon-joo asks how long she’s been gone. They say about half an hour, which shocks her.
The real shock comes when she looks at the nurse’s computer screen and sees a drawing of her kiss with Kang Chul. Yeon-joo yelps, and the nurse says the new episode just went up. She says the netizens are all upset about it too, wondering why the manhwa’s first kiss scene happens to be with a crazy woman, and not So-hee.
The nurse says she likes it though, because she’s a fan of surprise lovelines rather than the obvious leads getting together. Seok-bum is rooting for So-hee, on the other hand, because of the size of her bra. Yeon-joo balks at the idea that she’s a loveline, and shuts off the nurse’s monitor, claiming that it’s an unnecessarily large screen and the drawing is a little embarrassing.
Seok-bum says she’s being weird and teases her for getting emotionally involved because the character is named after her, like she got to kiss Kang Chul. Yeon-joo gets a timely bout of hiccups in response.
Dad’s webtoon team gets a call from the publisher asking about the new issue, and the staff is confused, since they’re still working on it as they speak. They assume it’s a mistake, and are shocked to see the new issue already online.
Su-bong runs into Dad’s office to ask him about it, but then he sees Kang Chul’s kiss with Yeon-joo on Dad’s monitor and realizes that he must’ve sent in the final copy without them. Dad says nothing, and just glares at that drawing of the kiss.
Suddenly Dad storms out of his office and interrupts Su-bong’s call with the publisher, declaring the last issue a mistake and demanding that they take it down. The publisher is reluctant since the response is good, but Dad screams at them to just take it down.
Dad tells his staff that tonight’s issue of W will be its last, and disbands the team and sends them all home. He leaves them all stammering in his wake, and they wonder what’s gotten into him, and why he’s suddenly inserting kiss scenes, and how he’s drawing all of this so quickly when they were only halfway done.
It starts to dawn on Su-bong that something is going on here. Is he finally starting to believe Yeon-joo’s crazy theories?
Yeon-joo reads the latest episode of W with her hands over her eyes, cringing at her own crazy antics recorded for all to read. But the kiss scene instinctively makes her touch her lips again.
Dad starts packing up his drawing equipment, when Yeon-joo calls. She tells him not to deny it any longer, because now she’s met Kang Chul in person twice. He doesn’t answer her questions, but says:
Dad: “You said it was murder? I drew it. It’s my project! So in my project I am god, because I created everything! How can a god destroying his creation be murder?! That’s not murder; it’s judgment. He’s a monster. I didn’t know it at first, but I had created a monster. So I decided to bring judgment upon him, because he was a malformed creation. How can I leave him be, when I’m about to be devoured? I should’ve ended him right away, there on Hangang Bridge.”
Whoa. Shall we back away slowly?
He tells her to forget everything she saw today and calls it a fantasy. Yeon-joo argues that it’s not—it was real—but Dad erupts at her that it’s a fantasy if he says it is, and not to turn them both into crazy people. He says that it’s enough for him to be crazy, and tells her not to get involved because it’s dangerous.
And with that, he walks out into the rain, and checks into a motel to finish drawing the final episode.
Back in Kang Chul’s world, he drives away from the clothing store and tells So-hee to take care of the incident so that no videos are leaked. So-hee asks what’s on the video, and he says she’ll be mad when she sees it, swearing that none of what happened has to do with Yeon-joo being pretty.
Chul is positive he’s found the key to his life in Yeon-joo, and reiterates that he’s not saying so because Yeon-joo is pretty. He repeats his original sentiment that if she’s pretty, dogs and cows are pretty too, and that Yeon-joo is the craziest crazy he’s ever laid eyes on. Still, she saved his life, and that means they have to protect her and make sure she isn’t questioned by the police or publicly outed.
Chul breaks off mid-sentence when he sees a giant truck suddenly careening towards him. It picks up speed and comes straight at him like it’s gunning for his car, and even as the two vehicles are hurtling towards each other, Chul sees that the license plate and windows on the truck are all blacked out.
They’re seconds away from impact when Chul swerves so hard that he hits the sidewalk and pops a wheelie, sending three of his tires up in the air…
The frame freezes, and then we see Dad drawing the bloody impact as the truck hits Chul’s car. He breathes a sigh of relief now that it’s done, and downs a glass of scotch.
But back in Kang Chul’s world, he opens his eyes and is startled to find that everything is frozen in time except him—the truck, his car, random passersby in the street with spilled drinks floating in mid-air.
Chul looks around in disbelief, then gives the truck a furious glare before stepping on the accelerator. He guns it and swerves again, missing the truck by mere inches. Whew. The truck of doom continues on its way, and Chul is safe.
When Dad puts down his glass of scotch and looks back at his screen, something bizarre starts to happen: The scene he just drew gets erased right before his eyes, deleting Kang Chul’s car from the crash scene. Startled, Dad picks up his pen to draw it in again, but his pen leaves no mark on the image, like it’s impervious to his changes now.
Kang Chul steps out of his car and looks up at the sky. In a wide shot overlooking the street where he stands, suddenly a large block of text appears over the drawing as Kang Chul speaks: “Who the hell are you?” ACK. He’s speaking to his creator!
Dad falls out of his chair, completely terrified out of his mind. And Kang Chul looks up at the sky, determined to find out who he is.
COMMENTS
Okay, that was crazy. I’m really shocked that Kang Chul is already starting to break the fourth wall of his own manhwa, because I wasn’t expecting that kind of awareness from him so early on. This is an exciting turn, with our hero starting to clue into the fact that there’s something else out there trying to control his fate. Maybe his Matrix moment will come sooner than we think? But what happens to his world in that case?
Now I wonder if it was Kang Chul’s own will to survive that ran so deep that his will became real, and gave him power to counter his creator. But there are so many other questions there, like why Dad wanted to kill off his own main character in the first place, and more importantly, why Kang Chul is special. Because not every manhwa has its own alternaverse out there (that we know of…) and our characters in the real world make it clear that this is an anomaly. Is it the confluence of traits that Dad gave Kang Chul—resilience, strong will, a geeeeenius mind (rethinking that one, eh Dad?)—that somehow led to this possibility? Or is Dad just a puppet too?
I know that Dad’s creator-creation speech was really extreme—I mean, talk about your god complexes—but the thing is, I see how from his perspective, what’s happening is actually really terrifying. Because if he created a fictional character that one day started to display free will, he has every right to feel horror, and to think that Kang Chul might be some kind of monster he can’t un-create. He’s the prettiest monster I’ve ever seen, but I agree he isn’t… normal.
From Dad’s point of view, Kang Chul is an abomination—it’s legitimately frightening that a two-dimensional character has become stronger than his own creator. It doesn’t explain his fear of being devoured by his own creation, but I suspect that we’ll be finding out that Dad spends a good deal of time in Kang Chul’s world, and who knows what he does there, or who else he might be influenced by. I love the themes explored in this father-son relationship, which has none of the familial love, but all of the mythos of gods and heroes and legend. Dad seems right now to be a cruel and exacting creator-god, but my guess is that we’re just scratching the surface with him.
I’m really enjoying the intricate way that the narrative unfolds in both universes at the same time, and the way that the webtoon’s framework shapes Yeon-joo’s experiences in that parallel world. How clever is it that Yeon-joo needs to find or create a narratively significant event to send her back to her own world? It’s even better than incense sticks and brushes with death, because she’s shaping how Kang Chul’s story goes, and it forces her to think like a writer, which is a fun level of meta for the audience. I died laughing at the part where our drama heroine has kissed a comic book hero in hopes that it’s a big enough cliffhanger to end an episode on. That is gold. I can only hope she is less creative than her father and just reuses the kiss escape every time. Hell, it beats clicking your heels three times.

IKR! I didn't expect the drama to be THIS good!!!
On another note, I read on another site about the title. Not sure if anyone has pointed this out before...
W = Double U = Double Universe
IF THAT IS THE REASON WHAT/WHY THEY NAMED THE DRAMA, HOW SMART IS THAT???

This random thought came to mind while I was waiting for the episode to load.....
Other than the W being tongue-in-cheek for Double U(niverse), I thought it also looked like when the two leads are standing, facing each other, with one arm outstretched towards each other, but separated by a glass? Like in a prison?
Y'know, like: \/|\/ with the | being a glass
Hahahaha ok I'm just indulging my own erratic thoughts.

I thought she did a good job matching the obvious stylized/heightened nature of the comic world. She played it as an intense reaction by someone who's fairly normal to utter crazy. Irrational acts to make sense of an irrational world.

Exactly - she's in a fictional world and trying to play by its rules as an illegal immigrant who just wants OUT. This is not her normal behavior.
She's not jumping universes to hit on Kang Chul, or even to talk to him. She's purely focused on preventing his death and then would love to just vanish. Unfortunately she made herself the next vital piece in the storyline by agreeing to meet with him after he got discharged and apparently there was no other exciting plot thread to take over during those two months, so she got stuck with the cliffhanger.
I'm going to crack up if she starts trying to dodge the main storyline altogether. Or cooking up makjang subplots to pull attention away from her. It'll make her look nuts, but if it works and Kang Chul's alive, she won't care. This universe isn't real to her, she doesn't have to live in it.
Though I did laugh when I realized the downsides of having a love line in your dad's comic - Yeon Joo can't do anything without thinking of her dad seeing it all in detail. Guess this loveline stays PG?

If you are unhappy with her acting and think it is over the top, blame the PD (the same PD for she was pretty). Personally, I love her acting and reactions to the weirdness happening to her. Every reaction is spot on and fits perfectly unlike she was pretty. Any normal person would become a stuttering mess after finding out your favourite comic book hero is real in an alternate universe which you happened to sucked into.

I came on here to see if anyone else noticed too. Han Hyo Joo is an interesting actress to watch, and I'm envious of her beauty too, but there are moments when she is acting that she goes a tad overboard with her mannerisms, which then ruins the believability factor for me.
Sometimes, she over-exaggerates her horror or comic moments rather than behaving more naturally to make it more believable.
However, these are small moments (I hope) and it doesn't detract from enjoying W. I'm very much in awe of the storytelling and the great art style!

If you consider that drama characters talk in ways that you wouldn't really hear people in the real world speak, it would also make sense that people in the webtoon within the drama speak in yet another way. To me, yes, Jong Suk is acting more mature, but he's playing a fictional character who (at this point) has no control over what he says). I foresee things changing as he becomes more self-aware.

That's a good theory. The scene at the bridge could have been the first time that Kang Chul acted on his own, and the father let it slide.
I am dying to know more. I guess everything is linked to the father: why he created Kang Chul and later wanted him to die, etc. The story has so many possibilities, and I like the idea that now the two "children", the flesh and blood and the webtoon one, are together much to the father's chagrin.
Certainly the show is living up to the expectations so far, entertaining and rising the stakes. It's going to be a long week waiting for next episode :D

That would be so epic. I love this whole string of speculations. They are all really great theories.
And I suspect that Chul has noticed other instances where some "higher power" has repeatedly interfered in his life. He wouldn't so calmly ask "Who are you?" otherwise. This couldn't have been the first time.
Damn, I love it when I drama get you properly speculating and being unable to come up with predictable plot lines. =D

My contribution to this theory is that Chul was never supposed to be the hero. Maybe it was the prosecutor who was the lead -- who knows? And maybe the sad olympic athlete, accused of murdering his whole family, was *supposed* to die at the bridge that night. And as Elena, he could have exerted free will for the first time and taken over the story.
Authors often talk about characters taking over and doing things that they never expected them to. Maybe this is the same premise gone supernaturally mad! =)

Good theory! But I think KC has always meant to be the hero, otherwise why would the first print (and the rest) of the webtoon's hard cover be his face?
Hmmm. There's possibly another reason why KC had to die that night at the bridge, but in the end didn't. Same way how he was supposed to die at the end of this ep but didn't. Like who/how/why did KC's time stop just enough for him to survive that crash? For all we know, there could have been another slow mo moment during the bridge scene (or something else but a similar experience) that saved KC's life. Anyway, I am dying to know more! Aren't we all though. Lol.

Or the father could have wanted Kang Chul to survive by s different method, maybe the usual fall down bridge, survive, revenge, amnesia, cancer etc. But Kang Chul badass survival will took over and he refused to fall off the bridge.
Elena
July 22, 2016 at 1:49 PM
Maybe the father was going through a depression or something; remember that he divorced, and the relationship with his ex-wife does not seem good... He could have lost the desire to write the manwha and tried to end it. But the main character he draw was not one to do that...and I do not know how the magic comes into play. As others have said, Kang Chul seems to be related to Yeon Joo ideal type, so what if he is not entirely the father's creation and this is why he cannot kill him?
So many questions without an answer, I guess we can keep speculating the whole week and not get even close the real reasons behind :D

I don't think that's what the father meant when he said he should have killed Kang Chul at the bridge. It's like when a mother says, "I should never have had children!" It's an expression of regret, not of frustrated intent. I mean, who sets out to write a manhwa and kills his main character in the first episode? (And as TaeBi says below, I'm pretty sure Kang Chul is the main character, as evidenced by all the covers of the manhwa issues.)

Perhaps this was already mentioned, but I keep getting the sneaking suspicion that all Chul's talk about her being the "key to his life" is actually very literal. That she is the literal key to a door (perhaps out of the manhwa universe). Maybe this is just crazy talk because that would mean he is very aware of the fictitious nature of the world he lives in, but there is something pointed and suspicious about the repeated use of that phrase.

I think that's why he is calling her key.....KC character is mysterious.... I don't think dad went to parallel universe because that would have also ended up as a scene in comic...
from the greek god quote from ep1 I think the dad killing his son (KC) because he is overthrown by KC and KC is taking control of whole comic.. and KC might also know other world exists....
KC possibility of coming to real world also means that the hooded guy can enter too... which is not a good thing....

I have a theory as to why Dad hadn't shown up in the webtoon yet (if ever he's not cosplaying as someone else aka the hooded man). Anyway, like YJ said, the webtoon's story will progress based on the hero's story. In W comic, KC is the hero so any other characters who have no connection to him or hasn't interracted with him won't show up in the webtoon.
Remember the 2 month time skip? Unimportant scenes were skipped because the story's concern was where KC's interest lies. So assuming KC and YJ's dad haven't met yet, that's probably why he hasn't appeared in the webtoon.

I agree that he is aware that something is not right with his world. The fact that after the near accident he immediately asks, 'Who are you' rather than maybe 'What's happening' I think is proof that he had thought of something being not quite right before.
And you're right, that 'key to my life' phrase he keeps repeating feels like it is important.

The most impressive thematic point of this show is what I call the Frankenstein trope. Here the horror of creation gone beyond your control is shown. What will this artists do now that his own daughter who he clearly loves is being sucked into what he considers evil?
In one small speech you open the immense world of creator/creation. Every writer, artists, god, parent will know that intense fear that comes form realizing you've made something live. Something that has a life of it's own and will grow far beyond you. I cannot believe how quickly the writer delved into it. I love it.
I'm really enjoying the fact that the drama decided not to be subtle at all in it's constant shifts between reality and mawhality. A comic based world should be this drama prone!

Question, if Yeon-joo's father is god (Saturn), Yeon-joo is also a goddess (Juno, Veritas)? like literally from the pantheon of creation of Kang Chul’s world.

Yeah, whoever was picking the visual references for this drama absolutely knows their stuff - Goya is a great and really famous artist but, in my experience, not someone the average person would immediately recognise by name the way we do with Rembrandt, Vermeer, Van Gogh, Monet, Renoir etc - not unless they have some knowledge of art history or an interest in the subject.
I don't know if his work is more widely known/referenced in Korea but either way, this choice was absolutely on point.

Maybe it's premature to say this, but I think this may be the best drama airing at the moment just based off of creativity and cinematography and direction.
LJS is delivering with his acting and portrayal....you can feel he is a comic book character. I'm super impressed with him.
HHJ, on the other hand, is over the top and it kind of takes me out of the drama at times. She thinks opening her eyes real wide is acting and, I'm just...umm yeah. I'm also not really feeling the chemistry quite yet, which i think will change as the story progresses.

What I like about HHJ's acting here is that I feel like I could actually screen grab her scenes and make a comic out of them by chucking speech bubbles on top. Sure, some of her expressions and poses are exaggerated for our world... But not a manwha. In a manwha, a single expression needs to encapsulate an entire panel's intent.
If you took "Saga", for instance, and had real actors play out scenes with the character poses and expressions they'd look nuts. But HHJ is doing a very light version of that and it works for me - stuff like her full-body turn at the bus stop to whisper to herself, or some of her gestures in the car. She's right on the edge of someone who would be considered eccentric here and someone who looks crazy.
I love that Kang Chul classifies her that way too, as though she's doing it on purpose rather than a blend of panic, discounting the realness of her surroundings, and (unintentionally) creating poses that will generate the right comic panels.

HHJ is doing a great job. And I think she also has the more difficult role to portray. All her facial and body expressions are priceless, especially in this episode. This series would not be as fun as it is had she played it more straight and serious.

Totally agree with you on HHJ's acting - it also takes me out of the story. Lee Jong Seok is playing a fictional character and perfectly balancing the high drama air of the fictional with the grounding of someone real - I totally believe his character. But HHJ is just flailing around in most scenes and overacting in others. She doesn't feel like a real person to me, she feels like someone plopped out of a bad rom-com. She needs to tone it down, and her reactions also need to be more realistic.

It's exactly like bad rom com acting, which is why I'm so confused because this is a thriller/adventure drama...so the ottness is kind of out of place. Plus, she's been super hyped on this site, so I'm even more chagrined.

Er, maybe that's the point? I mean KC is in his skin/world/comfort zone so the way he is played would come off as normal to us. YJ on the other hand is in another world, a webtoon at that! and she's having all this preconceptions about what happens in a webtoon and how it happens in a webtoon so that might be affecting how she acts inside the webtoon. I'm totally thinking this through YJ's pov and not through HYJ because I don't see her acting anymore, I just see the character. Maybe that helps? Or maybe not?

Yeah I agree. LJS is doing a great job balancing. I get what the person above said about being based on a manwha but this is a different medium. HHJ needs to tone it down because she's bringing some us out of the drama. Perhaps when her character is better adjusted to the situation I'll be better able to appreciate her acting but that's not now. That happened for me in Kill Me, Heal Me, when the main female lead was so shrieky at the beginning, but by the middle she was toned down and I ended up loving the show.

I thought it was down to the characters and a conscious decision. LJS is a comic book character so his acting is muted and easily converted into panels and speech bubbles. As is the case with the other characters in that world. Whereas HHJ is a real person whose life has become quite crazy. I haven't seen the actress before so I can't judge but she seems fine to me (LJS on the other hand...vastly improved here from what I have seen of him earlier).
You have to go for OTT like with the Japanese manga live action films. Even the real world is a bit distorted, they are not aiming for a natural or life like setting.
The 2 eps were great, not just down to the writer but it all came together so well.

Thing is, it would make better sense to have the comic characters have exaggerated expressions since that's how they are drawn (with the exception of Chul who would probably maybe be the perfect too-smart guy in mangas with least expressions and sarcastic/wry comments like the smart guy in Ouran)... as an outsider into their world, the only time her expression should be that exaggerated is when she was initially surprised to find herself there, but once she realised that she was in the comic-world and also became so cool and matter of fact abt it (except for the when will this end situation) her expressions should be more real like, to the end that the comic characters should think she's a stoic character whereas us viewers will know how flighty and flaily she is in 'real' life.. think this level of nuance can be brought abt by somebody like Kim goeun, but hhj is decent enough so not a very big complaint.

Judging by the whole set up for the webtoon all characters are underplayed (the secretary, bodyguard) so I am guessing that's what they want there.
The character is played in an OTT way right from the scene with her boss. Its only the 2nd episode, in the first she is bewildered but in the 2nd she alternates between wanting to stop the death and general panic at being caught in the world and trying to leave. Its not like she has been in it for eons to be cool. I don't think at this stage how the two worlds perceive each other is at play, in fact the character talking to herself etc. are because she is aware she is in a webtoon? Anyway it didn't bother me, I think the episodes had flow and kept up the pace.
Tbh I don't think they are going for nuance at the moment in any of the characters so I am not sure the actress herself is to be singled out.

Couldn't agree more she's real bad. I wish Park Bo-young was the lead. She is amazing and would have taken the comedic scenes to another level.
I understand she is freaked out and confused that she was just pulled into another world but her reactions are really awkward and weird. It has little to do with the character and more to do with her acting ability. Of course she could be just following the PD's orders.

yes!! second episode recap. I was waiting for it so I could talk about it. I adore how they made use of the kiss scenes (and I like how they introduce the characters in the manhwa world).
I absolutely love the balance between humor and suspense/mystery in this drama.
Considering that Kang Chul has already broken the fourth wall (or at least has awareness) it makes me wonder if the travelling between the two worlds will soon be done by both characters.
Someone commented this on Naver and I think they are right. The drama seems to imply that the first time that the manga artist lost control of his character is at the bridge scene, but one of the people who were commenting stated that it's possible that Kang Chul found his resilience/will during the Olympics (when he was almost about to lose, but then he shot that mad 10.9). And then from that point, the world turned strange. It seems right considering that scene was played in a serious slo-mo.
and the ending for second episode was so chilling and satisfying. love it. <3.

I think that the first time Kang Chul resisted to be a good cartoon character and die was the scene at the Hanggang Bridge. Since then Daddy has to fight him somehow - or he has to fight Daddy?
But what is really scary in my opinion is that it seems not only his will to live that drew him kind of into "reality" but also that he wants to find the real culprit and take revenge.
And at the end of day it was Daddy who killed his family - if only by inventing and drawing the hooded guy.
How are all of them supposed to deal with that? I mean in all likelihood Yeon-Joo and Kang Chul will come together and Kang Chul will enter "reality" - and then?

I love this writer. No matter how bonkers the concept, the writing and characters are smart (or if not smart, at least thinking coherently and logically). It makes SENSE that the manwha artists would use a familiar hospital as a model, and that it would be Yeon Joo's hospital. It makes sense the manwha would skip boring bits. And the chyron completely cracks me up, it's the weirdest little thing and she has to really be on the lookout for it, and if she's trying to trigger it and fails she looks like a loon. Seriously, the chyron may be my favorite manwha-world trick so far.
The Yeon Joo stuff is fascinating because she must be torn between thinking the manwhorld is real and has to be treated seriously, and that it's a delusion that she just needs to snap out of. She can be more risky if it's a brief and isolated delusion, but if it's real and there are repercussions she needs to be very careful. Obviously now she knows the story will literally stalk her to fulfill promises, she needs to pick her words. Kang Chul's of course has his own set of real/delusion issues.
I also love that LJS is so unbelievably leggy that the seat of his fancy car hits him at about mid-shin.

Kang Chul is starting to see the artifice of his world. I wonder if this is the first time he has noticed. And that ending was amazeballs!
I think the comic went rogue beginning on the bridge when Kang Chul was going to kill himself. Dad mentioned the bridge like it was some sort of catalyst. Now he (dad) is intent on ending the story and stopping the drawings from creating themselves. My question: is dad really the murderer inside the story? Meaning he as the author (or god) is the bad guy -the killer is just an unidentifiable man at this point and only active in the story because dad gave him life? The killer doesn't have an identity outside of being the shadowy character. (This thought is difficult to explain, I hope the jist is coming across). Does dad even know which of the characters he created is the killer? I think this may play an important role in the story.
But this story has so many directions it could take one could speculate for hours all the possibilities.

I'm thinking this too! Maybe he entered that world and met the villains so he's desperate to just end the whole thing. But Chul keeps surviving and the dad keeps getting sucked back in to the story.
Who knows, maybe the divorce happened because his life was falling apart because he couldn't talk to anyone about it for fear of being called crazy.

Oh! Good point! That would be one reason why he's so desperate on ending the story.
But if the villain is the one getting out of hand, couldn't dad just write the webtoon in a way where the murderer is caught? The changes in the webtoon only happens after all if there's an outside force who enters the webtoon world.
His line, "He should have died back then in Hanyang Bridge." seems to be giving this huge clue. I just don't know what exactly.

My first thought was that dad was the killer. I'm not so sure now (but I will enjoy the guessing).
My thing now is, why is dad so terrified? Okay, that fact that his story is taking on a life of it's own is kind of scary. But the outright terror that he displays seems too much for just that to be the answer. And I feel like he always knew about the fact that the world was 'real' and he entered it before... Gahhhh!

I thought this might be a possibility too. Maybe dad is so scared not necessarily because the comic has a life of its own but because the bad guy is trying to break into our world. Just as Kang Chul is starting to notice the artifice, maybe the bad guy did too. Is the bad guy out for revenge against dad? He wants to escape before dad can convict him in the story.
But, then why does dad need to kill the hero? Why not have Kang Chul kill the bad guy? Or have them kill each other? Too many possibilities!!!!!

July 22, 2016 at 6:55 AM
But doesn't Dad think that Kang Chul is the monster? So isn't dad afraid that Kang Chul will come into the real world instead? I think if dad was afraid of the killer then he could use Kang Chul to get rid of him, so killing Kang Chul doesn't make much sense to me. I think dad wants to kill Kang Chul because killing him would end the story. But if he was afraid of the killer then I think he could use Kang Chul to expose/kill the killer AND end the story making a happy ending (from my understanding the whole point of the story is for Kang Chul to avenge himself).

Yeah I think the dad needs to kill the hero to hopefully end the webtoon, which can't go on without the main character. Killing the bad guy won't guarantee the end of the webtoon.

I'm usually super lenient in terms of kdrama acting, and defensive of female actors because they get a lot more vitriolic comments trying to criticize them, but, imo, she's overracting and hamming it up way too much.
I haven't seen her in awhile, and I think part of my surprise is that ifans hyped up her acting so much...and it's kind of a disappointment.
In all sincerity, if one of the more hated actresses on this site like, PSH, or whoever, gave a performance like this she would have been dragged through the mud by now.

I did find her a touch cartoonish in ep 1 at some points but for the most part, she's got it from about the halfway mark of ep 1- the expression of dawning 'omg-this-is-bad, wtf is happening, do I even dare to turn around and see' on her face when she felt the hand grab her jacket to pull her into the screen, was perfect.

I actually think she is acting like she should be acting. She is dramatic because for the past ten years she is in W manhwa world. I think of it this way, when theater kids act dramatic is because we believe that they were immersed in that world. When we think people act dramatic is because we believe that they've been watching too many dramas. So in her case, I feel it makes sense she is acting cartoonish because she has been reading W for the past ten years and has been surrounded by that world.
It could also be that I haven't seen her in anything else, except Spring Waltz years ago, and I don't have her body of work imprinted in my mind. So it is fresh for me.

I really liked her in Always/Only You, a movie with So Ji Sub. That was a quieter fragile performance as a blind woman falling in love with a boxer. Seeing her in that... I feel like the exaggerated acting here is an intentional choice.
Whether it's her decision or direction from the PD, who knows? Admittedly there were a few bits of dialogue and physical expression that was kinda spastic - but overall I like her especially as a foil for the calm confident hero.

'a fictional character that one day started to display free will" CREEPY but then it if it is as pretty as LJS... then by all means please be real. lmao Kidding aside, episode 2 topped episode 1.
I wonder what happened at the scene when Chul was ready to jump and die. Dad said he should have died then, so that means the story started to change from then, but then that's such a long time for Dad to go on making the story. He should have tried to kill him then. And maybe he did but was always unsuccessful. Or was it Dad's decision to change that part on the bridge and have him live. OR something/someone else has been calling the shots??!!
I love how Yeonjoo is becoming a writer when she is in the manhwa. Her attempts to end the episode were hilarious. Dad, on the other hand, is very interesting. I wonder how he will deal with Yeonjoo actively (because the first one she was sucked in) meddling with his story.

I also laughed so hard during their interactions in the car and later when she kept looking for 'To be continued' sign...It was really funny to me. I actually do not find her overacting at all.

Kim Boong Do in Queen In Hyun's Man was awesome because he was so atypically suited for time-travel: a scholar who thrived on observation and deduction, who was clever enough to quietly suss out the rules of this weird new universe and then carefully apply what he'd learned. But he was so great BECAUSE he was unusual and clever, skipping a lot of man-out-of-time tropes.
Yeon Joo doesn't have his intellectual instincts, but she's also dealing with a partial conviction that none of this is real (and so her behavior is temporary and without repercussion) and a deep working knowledge of manwha story structure. She's clever enough to understand how to work the hospital knowledge in her favor, and she's got the episode-ending concept down too.
I think it helps to consider that some of her behavior is because she thinks the manwhorld isn't real. She'd never slap someone in life, but here...? She literally doesn't exist in this Korea, she's not remotely entertaining the idea that she's stuck there, she knows there's a way out and she just has to find it. What she looks like while doing so is meaningless to her.

Haha! Is 'manwhorld' our name for it now? Love it.
Totally with you on Yeon-joo's behavior. Frankly, I've gone from liking HHJ's portrayal in episode 1 to loving it in episode 2. If this were time-travel, I'd expect her to be down-playing her reactions (or, at least, trying harder to) for the sake of not calling attention to herself, but, in this universe, all bets are off. She has absolutely no reason to save face and is completely focused on one thing: saving Kang-chul and then getting the hell out of dodge. I loved that her ideas for ending the chapter were more like endings for dramas than her father's manhwa. I really can't blame her, considering Kang-chul took it upon himself to instigate The Makeover.
What will make it interesting is when all the fan reactions to her character start getting to her and she becomes passionate about making better contributions to the webtoon. I'm going to have so much fun watching how people in her life react to her flustered attempts to end each episode.
On another note, I was just wondering how Kim Boong-do would react to being sucked into a manhwa. I'm actually not sure whether it's something his logical brain could handle. I can only picture him sitting in silence until the madness ended...

I think Kim Boong Do would have figured out how to change clothes and would be sitting in a park, watching everything and taking notes on scrap paper with a promotional pen he found, working on how to explain his lack of documentation. I'd imagine he'd also be listing out all of the other unexpected manwhorld-related things that might happen: time shifts, but also never needing gas for cars or the possibility that bathrooms only exist in private homes, or something like that. He'd also probably be wandering around trying to identify buildings with real-world parallels or puzzling out whether he can exit manwhorld just by leaving the main storyline.
Where KBD was a generalist, interested in everything and very informed about everything, Yeon Joo isn't at all. She knows more about medicine than your average person, and much more about manwhas. But those are very specific verticals; she's just never going to approach manwhorld in the same analytical, comprehensive way that KBD would. She's going to be specific, which makes her stand out.
I do love that Kang Chul basically identifies her as a crazy woman staking her turf. That's amazing, and totally understandable from his point of view - he just stated it so perfectly it makes me laugh.

How can I love it for so many reasons already? This drama has gripped me, heart and soul.
I love the idea that creating a geniuuuuus for a lead character can backfire on a writer that doesn't plan on giving a deserving ending for that character. It's fascinating, really. How many stories have there been with great characters stuck in plots that end up robbing their journeys of greatness? It's really powerful to see a 'character' taking control of his own story like this and getting the ending he deserves.
What's great is that I actually totally get the father's conflict at this point. I still think there is a lot to be revealed about the incidents that led him to this mental state. What I find interesting, though, is that if he had simply resolved to write a resolution to Kang-chul's revenge plot, instead of trying to kill him off at random, Kang-chul might have never had reason to question his existence. The more the Dad has lost control of his original vision for the webtoon, the more the integrity of the webtoon's universe falters, making it weak to the will of others.
I'm wondering whether his alcoholism has any connection to his loss of control over the story? It's hard to say because his drinking could very well have started when ever it was that Kang-Chul first went against his will.
I also keep thinking about Kang-chul being Oh Yeon-joo's ideal type. Her aunt mentioned her being an artist so...what if the reason she is able to continuously save him is because her father partially based his character off her own illustrations & ideas from long ago?
Ahhhh, so many things to consider and wonder about. Can it be Wednesday already? Oh what I'd give just to fast-forward to my next encounter with this lovely drama...

Wow, that was an interesting analysis. Could she be the real "creator" of Kang Chul? That would give explanations for her ability to intervene in the webtoon, and also to Kang Chul's words about her being the key to his life.

When Su-bong got the OMG face after hearing that the loveline submitted was not meant for publishing, I thought he would suspect his noona of going crazy. She certainly has some artistic talents and she has access to her dad's stuff and she is a bit crazy fangirl enough to draw her own episodes and submit it under her father's name.
It's certainly the first conclusion I'd make rather than "OMG noona is entering the manhwa world and changing the story!"

I wonder what the father meant when he said he had to kill his creation before his creation devoured him. Maybe there's a parasitic relationship between Kang Chul and the father and the life/free will Kang Chul has is leeched from the father's life force? Ack! I have no idea but I'm very intrigued.

As Kang Chul is seemingly aware of the artifice of his surroundings, I wonder if dad is scared him pursuing revenge on his creator who put him in so much strife. Can't comment on the dialogue, but I did notice that he seems to punctuate most sentences with a head-tilt and smirk. LJS didn't do this with his other drama characters so I don't think it's him regressing into Song Seung-hoon.
I feel like LJS is really acting like a manhwa guy here where lines are precious and short, and are always delivered with a bit of posturing.

Yes, it's cadence. It's not a dialect, and doesn't have anything to do with class, but he's chosen a different sort of rhythm to his speech, which is a little more monotone and highlights the rapid-fire dialogue.
It's purely a stylistic choice, and I'd say it makes him sound... wordy but busy? Like a boss who's used to giving out a lot of orders. His character uses a lot of words to say a thing, and his delivery magnifies that, if that makes sense.

I thought i was the only one who noticed it! His speech especially when there is a large para tends to sound monotone. And i was thinking - this is not how he talks usually in dramas. Makes perfect sense - the pattern of speech sounded a little "West Wing", that mix of high-information vocab and a confidence that could break into banter at any time. Like there's wittiness possible, but not definite.
In addition to the monotone he's doing something with a little bit of a fray in the middle of certain words, like he deliberately breaks his voice for flippant emphasis. I think the line that would have caught most people's attention was the one when he's in bed and says "Yeah, she's a beauty, I didn't mention that". That entire "그레 미인이" part was said with a the fray, and the rest drops into the monotone everyone's noticing.
I really like what he's doing, even for non-Korean speakers it's a noticeable change.

My Korean is very limited but I think it's the way Kang Chul talks, as in the manner of the speech, rather than the language itself. The only thing I noticed he used super formal words which have different endings in every sentence usually, maybe because he's used to business talks and stuff, which is obviously different from Soo Ha or Dal Po.

I want to be her! I want to live in a comic book, date a comic book hero, and write my own "To be continued" cliffhangers. Her life is virtually a Choose Your Own Adventure book. Yeon Joo ought to claim she came from the future. That would explain how she knows everything about him.
As Dad keeps bad-mouthing him, I am so freaked out Chul will turn out to be an evil monster. Please don't tell me he actually killed his family. Dad seriously needs to quit drinking or else people will assume he suffers from hallucinations.

Wow. So much craziness right now, but I love it.
As some have mentioned above, I don't mind that our heroines an airhead or sometimes over the top. It brings some much needed humor in some serious mind-bending moments. Plus, in order for her to survive without getting to caught up in the logic of it all, she needs to kinda be simple minded
Just a couple examples of the twisty mind-bending-ness.
1. When we watch these shows / read manhwas, do we need to now question the morality of killing off characters? I guess to those of us who are fans, it really does feel like murder. Give me back all my shed tears over all the characters that lost their lives! Gakistal, City Hunter, etc... I'm looking at you!
2. I really feel for the dad. When he said that he was tired, just think... He wants for this to end; he's been working on this for 10 years. Probably even lost his wife because he was so obsessed. Obviously he doesn't have to KILL the MC, but I can imagine the fear if a literary character you created suddenly had a mind of its own. Poor dad. That's what you get for creating a geeeenius character as handsome as LJS.
The only other option is that the dad didn't create the world, he just stumbled upon it and used it in his manhwa to become famous. In the process he was the "black figure" that ruined Kang Chul's life, as well as the unnamed voice on the phone calling for the murder by potassium. But honestly, my head spins from watching and dissecting this show.
Which is why I go back to saying I'm glad the heroine doesn't take herself too seriously at this point, otherwise she'd probably be as distraught and confused as we are when we try to psychoanalyse everything. I love all the meta references that something drastic has to happen, like a slap or a kiss for an episode to end. I agree with GF... Hopefully she isn't as creative and we will be treated to more kisses!! Wouldn't it be hilarious if she tries to go for one next episode and is immediately rejected? It does sucks that whatever she does will be broadcast for everyone on the Internet to see the next day... What does a girl need to do to get some privacy with the man of her dreams, even when he's just a webtoon?

Dad killed the family as the hooded guy cause he was hitting a writer's block. Some how he got sucked in, to his surprise, but used it to inspire and manipulate the world. His fumbling web toon then started to become really popular so he told no one about his adventures in the web toon. As the story progressed his plan to first kill kang chul way back on the bridge was to end it all and start over. But kang chul defied his creator and grabbed on to the bridge and pulled himself up. Like the recap says, his will to survive overcame the story, but it started a long time ago. It's only now that we see it's been driving dad crazy to see his creation take life so he feels like the web toon will eventually devour him. And one more time he decides to dress up as the hooded figure to stab kang chul to death. As to his physical capabilities? Well he's the writer, he can write himself to defy gravity and be strong. Also to his speech on murder, he's already killed kang chuls family which for years he's justified as just a story but maybe the guilt that they're real in their world has eaten him up too?

But wouldn't it be too simple for the dad to be the killer? I don't know. I feel like the Goya painting has other significance. I feel the killer could be a character created by dad that became self-aware too. In the scene where the nurse gets a phone call, we are not shown a comic strip of it, so maybe the self-aware kills call her?

Love the show! It's almost like Truman Show. A show within a show. The pacing is great and I've been enthralled by it so far. Strong storyline and we can't predict what will happen next.
I'm wondering perhaps Dad wanted to kill Kang Chul after he got sucked in and he found that Kang Chul has the ability to change his fate. Maybe that's why he thinks that killing Kang Chul will stop him from getting sucked back inside. But I wonder if he kills Kang Chul while Yeon Joo is in the webtoon, will she be trapped inside?
