Beans of Wisdom: I’m sorry, I love you (drama!)

This week in Beans of Wisdom…

Peppa writes a worrisome scenario in comment #5 of “Shin Sung-rok cast as Kim Haneul’s husband in On the Way to the Airport”:

Shin Sung rok to passengers:

“Good day passengers! This is your pilot SSR. Today , our destination is death. Please fasten your seatbelts and enjoy the flight” .

Flightey Gazelles adds:

SSR to passengers

“good day everyone! Please sit back and enjoy a safe trip. As you all know, your saftey andcomfort is our utmost concern, you know we like you right? How’s your health these days? Please take care of your health. Enjoy!”

gureum:

Refreshments will be poisoned champagne with a hint of paralysis.

In “Beautiful Mind: Episode 6,” doctordrama says in comment #26:

“Because you are not a monster like me, are you capable of feeling the depth of pain that is not yours but someone else’s?”–LYO

I love that interrogation scene and have seen it too many times. On one level, it’s bringing into question how our own prejudices and “normative” ideas limit and even cut off our ability to empathize and truly understand others. Just how the interrogator expects LYO to behave like a monster because of his medical condition. LYO exposes the hypocrisy of the interrogator.

But on another level, the line “are you capable of feeling the depth of pain that is not yours but someone else’s?” makes me think about the following questions: Can anyone really feel someone’s pain? Isn’t it presumptuous for any of us to assume we really know what another person is going through and know exactly how he or she feels? Each one of us is a unique individual, facing specific circumstances, and reacting to them differently.

And I just love Jin Sung’s answer to his question: “I’m moved to at least do something.” That it is about how one responds to someone’s pain, not necessarily about fully understanding it. It is really about what would you do knowing that someone is in pain even if you cannot understand it. And that’s a beautiful and powerful statement right there.

YY wrote a song in “Kim So-eun to reunite with Song Jae-rim in SBS family drama” comment #16:

The Applebutt Song
(Sung to the tune of Mary had a Little Lamb)

Oppa had an applebutt
Applebutt, applebutt
Oppa had an applebutt
It felt real soft and glowed

And everywhere that oppa went
Oppa went, oppa went
Everywhere that oppa went,
His butt was sure to go

Oppa loves his applebutt
Applebutt, applebutt
Oppa loves his applebutt
And talks to it all day

Someimtes he just sits and stares
Sits and stares, sits and stares
Sometimes he just sits and stares
At his applebutt all day

Psst! There are more songs in the rest of the post.

vongole writes in comment #10 of “Beautiful Gong Shim: Episode 17”:

I wish the show hadn’t made Jun Su’s father into a serial adulterer (which, if we think about it now, was just a plot device to get Gong Shim to be his secretary). We don’t hear about it anymore…

He would then have been my favourite-st side character ‘cos he is just adorable! His terrible jokes, the ‘important meetings’ in the children’s park and the doggie-care, and now the budding bromance with GM’s father is super fun. And, he seems to be a pretty reasonable guy otherwise too. Not the usual eeeevil chaebol daddy of K-dramas.

Alessar replies:

It would be funny if he really hadn’t been having affairs but was doing the things we’re seeing like sneaking off to play with dogs and go to the park and such and he just used a more adult excuse. Possibly to kind of shake up his wife from being complacent. I mean imagine a line like, “You went to see that bitch Judy again!” “Yes I did she’s a good girl!”

Lord Cobol has a question in “The Good Wife: Episode 1” comment #6:

Haven’t seen it (yet), but what is the magic attraction of murder weapons that makes the first person on the scene always pick them up?

Oshi answers:

It’s called rule of dramatic revegenence! You pick it up to protect yourself/gain revenge. My name for it and yes the exclaimation point is necessary.

Alex takes out the rule book:

That’s right, it is Drama Law – just like the Law governing that Secret Confessions Are Always Overheard by Various Third Parties, wearing glasses instantly makes a beautiful woman ugly (also known as Clark Kent’s Rule), and that fleeing people will always run into a Dramatic Cart Spilling Stuff Everywhere.

(Also the law that if anyone has been stabbed, someone will always go against every medical advice to pull out the knife as soon as possible, and then stare aghast as – surprise! – a lot of blood happens. Who’d have thought!)

Barbrey writes in comment #29 of “Uncontrollably Fond: Episode 3”:

Korean dramas are a guilty pleasure for me anyways so if I can overlook the cliche plots in order to enjoy the romance and emotion I don’t tend to get in North American dramas, then I can overlook the pacing and editing flaws in this drama because on the whole I am REALLY enjoying it. Along with Bring it On, Ghost and Beautiful Mind, I’m very happy with what’s on right now after a bit of a drought for me.

Momoi replies:

This is pretty much me. I need my fix of romance, sometimes the gushier the better. Sometimes lol

Japan doesn’t tend to have as much romance but it has feel-good stuff. I tend to watch Japanese dramas for that, Korean dramas for romance or family dramas, and North American shows just for fun or weekly stories with characters that continue on for (hopefully) years.

LaisFred adds:

Me too, I watch thousands of American show (a lot more than I should to have a healthy social life), but American show today are so worried about writing good scripts and twist that are forgetting the human relationship, and that why I love about kdrama, I don’t remember such a beautiful scene like the Joon-young and mother in an American show in a good time.

So, yeah, in the end of the day, I Always forget the cheesy lines, the plot holes, the stupid tropes use over and over again, everything, as long Kdrama make me feel something.

milky has some medical advice in comment a bit further down at #67:

Joon Young should visit Gukil medical, and met either Prof Hong or Dr. Yoo, or maybe even Dr, Jung. They’re the best neurosurgeons in town. Lol.

chai biscuit has a tip for the second lead in “Uncontrollably Fond: Episode 4” comment #5.2:

honestly, this is terrible. but ji tae should just sit tight and not be evil so he can get the girl after the main guy dies. lmaooo

In “Doctors: Episode 8,” Taeki’s horse-riding Teacher announces in comment #23:

GD, Jay Park, Eric… step aside and make way for the new rapper in town, Jang Hyun-Sung Ahjussi!!!!

kdramaluvshassey reminds us:

You forgot So Ji Sub

Don’t worry, kdramaluvshassey. Some of us didn’t…

The other Kiara has this to say in comment #13 of “Waiting and waiting for Winter Sonata 2”:

What’s left to tell that could top what has already been told?

juniper answers:

But Kiara, they can just tell the same exact story over again, now with PPL and a different set of pretty people!

YY has more ideas in comment #28:

Remakes we can expect:

Winter Subnata
In the freezing cold of a winter snowstorm, with roads and rails down, our leads fight their desperate craving for turkey breast and roast beef…

Subway to Heaven
The heroine forgets her love for Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki after she develops amnesia due to a car accident…

Autumn in my Sub
The heroine is forced to settle for cold salads after running into dire straits…

My Lovely Sub Soon
A pastry chef falls for a spicy Italian sandwich after taking on a new job …

Sub Happened in Bali
Two men fight over a delicious tuna sandwich in idyllic Bali, leading to tragedy

Nissa asks in comment #5 of “Character info revealed for Park Hae-jin’s “ghost agent” in Man to Man”:

So, who’s the hallyu star?

fab answers:

At this point I’m thinking PHJ plays both roles.

Am adds:

Now I would actually love to see that! I can imagine it in my head already and it would be hilarious! Even better, Park Haejin plays ALL OF THE CHARACTERS down to random customer #2 at Subway.

I mean, there must be a reason why he’s the only one who’s been cast for months and there’s no sign that they are trying to cast anyone else.

YY:

That’s the best idea ever – he could play the love interest too, he’s so pretty he’d totally nail the role.

In “The prince shakes his stuff for Moonlight Drawn By Clouds teaser,” Idhere525 asks in comment #6:

I am the only one who screamed “you threw off the emperor’s groove!” at the end?

You mean like this?

Romany88 started an empowering discussion on our drama choices in “Beautiful Mind: Episode 7” comment #9.1.1:

After the rave reviews, I wanted to join in the fun, and then felt completely stupid and like a dumb brick for not being able to “get it.” It must be because dramabeans is the elite of recap sites and the audience here is high-level, and I’m more of a low-level fluff person, but I simply don’t. get. it. I was feeling stupid and lonely, and kept trying to watch it. I respect the recappers of dramabeans tremendously, and didn’t want to disappoint (Yes, they couldn’t care less about what I watch, but I’m silly like that).

I think I subconsciously wanted to force myself so that I could become “intellectual” but after reading these comments, I think I might just found the courage to give up. :/

Maybe my problem is that I’m not intelligent enough. Which explain why I’ve been having problem connecting with all those smart doctors in the drama. To be honest, I can’t connect much with park so dam either, but that’s because she’s too perfect in her goodness, and I’m crap at human relationships like that. lol XD

I don’t care much for the outcome of the drama, because the murders are of people I don’t care much for. And the fate of the living are predictable? The only living people whose fate I care about are Suk Joo and Jang Hyuk. Suk joo’s storyline seems uneventful. Villains will get their comeuppance, Jang Hyuk will still be a great doctor, and get resolution with his father somehow, and the rest seems unimportant, and probably unchanged?

Anw, thanks guys for this thread. It saved me a bit from stubborn self-inflicted misery. I know, i was stupid, but everybody seemed to love this drama.

ahjumma loves drama replies:

Oh honey. You made me chuckle. Poor thing. You sound quite intelligent, don’t put yourself down like that!!

I’m having a difficult time connecting too, but I will just blame it on personal taste, not my intelligence. Don’t let others reduce your self-esteem like that. I confess to enjoying my guilty pleasure romance movies more, but I can also enjoy the occasional Oscar awarded movie. But if I get bored, I get bored. Don’t overthink this! I’ve seen plenty of kids get intimidated by the elites -as you call them- sneering down on them, and I always tell them that true elites are humble, and that those other kids are not worth their attention.

Michykdrama adds:

You shouldn’t feel like you have to watch a drama just because others may like it. I have quite a few dramas which I like but aren’t particularly popular or great (my guilty pleasure dramas!)

kate:

awiieeeee. Romany88 darling. From your list of recommended dramas, you have excellent taste. EXQUISITE really. Totally my type. So don’t be down about this. I was like you too, always feeling awful for not liking something deemed “intelligent.” But I realized that the people sneering at me for my taste were the true bullies, and that I shouldn’t be bullied into feeling bad for myself for not reaching up to their standards or matching my taste. Pat pat.

And Peeps:

This is just a drama and dramas are supposed to speak to you. If one can’t it’s not because you’re stupid or dumb. It’s just because it’s not speaking your language. It’s all about tastes and tastes differ. It’s okay.

cookiemonster asked something similar in “Police Unit 38: Episode 5” comment #17:

Everyone is having about this show but I don’t really get it. I watched this show up to episode 3 before I dropped it because it bored me so much. I loved SIG and wanted to watch for him but I just don’t find the first 3 episode exciting at all… anyone felt the same as me? Did the first 3 episodes more you too but it got better? I’d like to give this another chance. My favourite drama is I Remember You and I lived it from the start. I also loved Bad Guys….just this one seemed a little dull by comparison.

When did this drama got better for you?

comm38 replies:

Don’t force yourself to like something, life’s too short for it!! If the drama seem dull to you, there’s no reason to continue it, not even SIG should be worth you wasting your time.

And to answer your question, loved it from ep 1. So there you go, it’s all a matter of taste. Don’t feel bad for not liking something. ^^

constance doctors & 38 adds:

Great comment! I also second comm38 and meri. There’s not a single show on earth that will be able to satisfy everyone. The most popular shows are also the shows with the most people disliking them. So if a show is not for your taste, don’t dwell on it. It’s one thing to be unsure whether or not you’re missing out on something great and keep trying, but if you’re already sure you find it boring, no need to continue.

Like meri said, it’s about how you like your dramas. I like, or actually am crazy in love, with squad 38 because I love the squad, and the intricate plot points, and I keep wanting to know more about the past, and how it’s going to be resolved. But if you want something else out of the drama, or you find it not enough exciting, then that’s ok too. ^^

Why waste time on kdramas you don’t like when you can read the Dramabeans Commenting Policy instead?

What LaisFred said: "American show today are so worried about writing good scripts and twist that are forgetting the human relationship, and that why I love about kdrama, I don’t remember such a beautiful scene like the Joon-young and mother in an American show in a good time."

This is spot-on for me. Because American shows run so long and have a vested interest in keeping certain motivations ambiguous, those sort of crack-your-heart-open relationships scenes have fallen by the wayside a bit. You occasionally get those scenes in romantic relationships, but almost never outside of that - and even in the romantic scenes it tends to be part of a conversation that starts a new, more serious phase of the relationship.

It's a shame, because those steady, solid interpersonal motivations make up most of why we do what we do, much more so than career goals and objectives. Scenes revealing that someone else has thought about you and held you in their heart in a completely non-transactional and undemanding way are worth the time and effort.

I miss the days when we had Gilmore Girls, (well good thing its coming back), Felicity, The OC(My Love), One Tree Hill and so on. The long run affected them at some point but I liked how it was telling the story of characters more than anything. Are there any shows like that now, I'd love to give it a try. Its been a while I have watched show that are about characters and their human relation and not about who is dead, who will die or who will live or who is the spy or who is the superhero or who is the brilliant psychopath.

There a lot of cable/internet based shows that do the kind of grounded storytelling. they just get less of the headline space because of the been there done that feeling. The emotional gut punches are plentiful there.

As much as I hate it the kind of emotional story telling is now in the hands of shows produced by the former ABC Family (They have some crazy new name). Pretty Little Liars would be the place to start and there is a slew of others. I'd also HIGHLY recommend the CW shows such as Jane the Virgin (one of two must watch shows on tv) and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Transparent, OINTB, Sense8 and if you appreciate older actors Grace and Frankie are good internet based shows.

Jane the virgin is one my favorite tv show in the air right now, it's funny, creative, focus is more on the relationship between mothers and daughters, have an excellent female lead, that you identify and cheer for, They have one of the most healthy romance of American television at the moment (of course you will only agree with me if you are #teammichael), Gina Rodriguez is incredible, and it's a shame the show was unrecognized for Emmys.
Sorry, I can not stop talking about when someone mentions JTV.
I like Crazy ex-girlfriend too, but still have some details in this the show that bothers me, but it's cool to watch.

I LOVE JANE THE VIRGIN! It's the only on-air American TV show I watch right now. It's just so good and if anyone is ever looking for an American show with heart and an amazing main character (and family), look no further.

I was so happy last year when Gina won the Golden Globe. The Emmys may not be recognizing this show for some crazy reason (Hell-o! It even has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, for Pete's sake! Wake up, Emmys!)

I actually really recommend it to any drama fan. Check it out. Please. You will thank yourself. The way it plays with telenovela tropes is HILARIOUS.

Also, Rogelio. Enough said.

(and yes, #teammichael)

Oh God, I cannot STAND Jane in JTV. She is the most annoying, self-righteous, stubborn, uncompromising, immature character in the history of characters.
By the time season 1 was done, I was wondering why the two guys were so in love with her? She could drop dead any moment and I would salsa on her grave with a glass of champagne. That is how much I hate her.

I miss the Friends and HIMYM days, when hollywood is simple and funny, when their idea of good series doesn't include shocking the audience with too much sex and violence thus numbing them towards the end. I used to watch a lot of western tv series until I got tired of weekly never ending death, bed scenes and scandals trying to outdo their own episode last week. @_@.

When I rediscovered korean drama a few years ago, it was so refreshing to see innocent love stories whose only intimacy is a back hug or a brush of hand or the simple kiss towards the end of a 16 episode season.

oh and can I just say, I'm really sorry but Pretty little liar is so dumb that the whole plot could have ended in 5 episodes instead of having it extended for 5 seasons.

Who knew that more xylophones were needed in sageuk soundtracks? Not me, but consider me a convert.

Also, can anyone explain to me what 마녀보감 translates as? I'm good with witch/마녀, but 보감? Even broken apart into bits I'm not getting any traction.

The real-life Heo Jun wrote a book, Dongeui Bogam, which translates to Mirror of Eastern Medicine. This drama title plays on that title by switching the first word to Witch: Manyeo Bogam, hence Mirror of the Witch.

Ah HA. Thank you, mystery solved. Is "bogam" archaic at this point? Or just Sino-Korean in root, with a native Korean alternative word?

보감 = 寶鑑 = precious mirror

Yikes. And once again I'd like to thank King Sejong for hangul.

0

(Trying to stay away from Mirror of The Witch as much as I can) Speaking of the MOTW song, I really really liked it. The first few episodes of MOTW kept on talking about the curse and how Yeon Hui and Heo Jun shouldn't have been born to this world etc; but ending each episode with this song always gives me hope.

By the way, does 연 translate exactly to 'Love'? Is it an archaic?

Totally agree about everyone not having to like the same drama. I mean, my mom absolutely ADORED Heirs, DotS, whatever else was super popular, etc. but I hated those dramas. & I came from her womb (and grew up watching all the dramas she watched)... LOL so I think it's safe to say that not even blood ties can ensure similar tastes in... anything. :D

Words of wisdom! There are men and women who are popular in RL but that doesn't always mean loved by every single person around them. Kdramas do have a similar vibe.

The big problem is the "fear of left out" syndrome, the infamous FOLO that has infected the younger generations. Older people tend to be picky or over picky or sometimes, even grumpy while younger people follow all the trends without a second thought even if it's for a very short period of time.

Entertainer (weakest romance)
Modern Farmer (a hot mess with cute characters left and right)

Seriously, why don't Subway make their own drama? Starring the various subs as characters. The main leads will be hunky "Steak & Cheese" and "Sweet Onion Chicken Teri". 2nd leads can be "Roast Beef" who's gonna fight a losing battle with "Steak & Cheese" while "Classic Tu-Na" loses all time to Teri? Villain is "Cookies"(Cookie Monster duh) who's full of artery blocking trans fats and empty calories. Then, we can have real actors as PPL.

The toppings (we can't really tell who, because the lights are dimmed, we can only make out shadowy topping figures *cue makjang music*) squelch out of their trays in single file, squeak "SALUTE!" to one another, then leap slow-mo across the intervening trays to the TURKEY tray, and pile up neatly and quickly on top of the lone turkey there...

So glad to see the comments about not overthinking it about disliking popular shows...i really didn't like Coffee Prince, My Lovely Sam Soon, and My Love from Another Star yet I really love Secret Garden, Pinocchio, Oh Hae Young Again so i was feeling bad recently for disliking those massively popular dramas and wondering if i can even call myself a kdrama fan lol but i loved all the comments regarding this subject esp the one that its like falling in love with a guy, sometimes the connection is just not there.

First of all, always a pleasure to find you in any thread. Your comments are insightful.
To you and the person who started this comment, spot on! I've always tried to put into words why kdramas have zapped me in completely,no turning back, and have failed. Look,I've watched a lot of American Movies/Shows and continue to...well maybe not as much as before(thank you kdramas!) but it does seem like genuine movies with heart and good ol fluffy/gooey romance have been sacrifised in the quest for edgy/brilliant writing( e.g House Of Cards which I like btw). I wish those that try the traditional romance woun't be relegated to chick flick or lifetime. For example,I recently started The Flash season 2 and* spoilers* enjoyed so much the scenes with his new love interest(the cop who has now left to study some covinient course bcos? *sad face*). I always smile when their together bcos their romance did't feel last-minute or patronizing,it was genuinely developed.

I remember really liking some of the character moments on "Alias", and thinking they were unexpectedly genuine for a shooty-spy-show. Especially between Sydney and her dad, where it was clear there was this entire parallel family weirdness on top of professional weird.

Oh ALIAS! I will forever love Jenifer Garner and she gets a pass (wink) because of ALIAS. Her Sidney Bristow was everything 3d. She was sweet, lovely, girly, caring but total badass, and hot!

I mentioned above that a lot of the kind of emotional grounded storytelling has just moved to different spaces. I won't relist the shows.

One of the trends for current television fiction is to create a tiered approach to storytelling. The Sopranos/Breaking bad shows are on the more "prestige" oriented cable channels. On the other hand places like the CW/ABC Family produce shows like Jane the Virgin that are significantly more emotional/character driven. These shows get much less headline space but are far closer to the kind of grounded stories you're thinking of.

Agree about ABC and CW. Shows like switched at birth on ABC. Cwt especially is considered low class TV but they have some very interesting and FUN shows that are loved.

Totally appreciate the discussion about people not liking the same drama. I left a lot of popular dramas halfway because I didn't, couldn't, wouldn't relate to the characters or the plots, namely Oh Haeyoung Again, Let's Eat 2, It's Okay, That's Love, etc...

And yet I'm far from a sophisticated drama fan. Besides the crowd-pleasing, high-quality dramas, I enjoyed shows with bad plots and awkward actings before and I still do. Just a month ago I even sat through Nightmare Teacher to watch my baby Kim Sohyun.

Allessar - You made me laugh out loud!

The Shin Sung Rok descriptions were perfect!

I also loved the support that was given to those who expressedcdoubts in a drama and themselves.

However- YY! I should curse you! I'm fighting the computer to write this and I have applebutt being looped in my head to the tune of Mary had a little lamb! I give!

@romany88 DB readers are not superior. Just enjoy watching what you like instead of forcing to watch what other people like. I also don't like a few of popular dramas but I do know people are watching for their own different reasons( love romance, for thrilling factor, escapism, impressive acting, fav actors etc). Dont worry too much for simple thing. You dont have to prove anything to strangers in DB community~

Love the fact that people are coming out to share the drama they loved and the ones that didn't float their boat. For me Healer was one hard pill to swallow. There was just something off about it for me. At a point I thought I was the weird one for not liking it because everyone liked it so much. It took me 3 days just to finish reading the recap of Episode 1 and months to actually watch episode 1. I adore Ji Chang wook tho.

I can totally relate to the comments about feeling unintelligent for liking/disliking certain dramas. Particularly when I find myself loving a drama and then after reading negative posts or comments I start trying to find reasons to convince myself to like the drama less, or I start justifying myself every time I mention liking it (I know it's overrated but...). And even when it's popular and I think "I can't be that crazy for liking it if it gets 20%+ ratings!" that quickly turns to thinking that maybe it's just the unintelligent 20%? And then I realize I am overthinking everything and that life's too short to not watch (and even rewatch) the dramas that I enjoy. For example, I really liked the Heirs! I don't find DOTS overrated! And Doctors is my favorite currently airing drama! And those things do not make me unintelligent (other things might though). Plus the fact that I love super popular (and sometimes overrated) dramas doesn't mean that I can't also love some underrated gems!

You guys were right about sticking it until the 5th or 6th episode. By end of 5th episode it finally got me interested enoughto stick for the long run. :D

I sometimes feel like my tastes on dramas are weird . I love dramas that people hate , I just can't watch dramas that people love . When I watch drama that I love and people were hating on it , I felt left out . And it happened with DOTS recently . So when I read a post similar like that , I feel relieved that I'm not alone feeling like that .

All I have to say is the comments section made me laugh and laugh this week. Even when there are "words " on DB it doesn't degenerate into name calling.

I liked chai biscuits comments on Uncontrollably Fond. I keep expecting the male lead to live you see. And yes I am uncontrollably fond of the 2nd male lead. To the point of swooning over him. Where else the topless scene in ep 4 made me laugh so much. He is way bulkier than the average Kdrama male star. Then they cast him with one of the slimmest male actors around. One makes me think of the Incredible Hulk and then you put a guy whose face is half his size who doesn't even look as if he can do a piggyback ride. It's not very fair casting director.

I've been a lurker, but that comment about bullying really resonated with me. Thank you kate, and thank you DBStaff for posting it.

I've been distinctively uncomfortable with how a few commenters on here felt the need to put down the taste of others, in a particularly condescending manner, just to vent their frustration onto something for their drama not doing as well as they want.

I realize their words just words, but words can be injurious too. On one hand, expressing one's thoughts is a right, on another, when that thought does little else but put down others, the necessity of expressing that thought should be brought in question. I believe you can express your opinions and defend your taste, without the need to be disrespectful of others'. In other words, they're just words, but making someone else's self-esteem plummet without any regard for them can also be considered bullying.

Is it bad taste and/or stupid to like Kim Kardashian over Jane Austen? Who knows? Perhaps. Perhaps not. If you believe so, the way to go is talk about what you love about Jane Austen, rather than attacking the Kardashian's fans for their tastes.
In the context of DB, it's all dramas anyways. Tomato, Tomato. Or even Orange, Apple, Kiwi, Banana, Pineapple, Lemon. It might be too sour to you, too sweet, too tangy, but it has uses to someone else, it might even be beneficial to that someone else. Respect to all please.

Well said! A right needs not always be used.
I think the "victim" should learn not to be too sensitive for their own comfort, but I've seen enough comments on here to understand why several commenters have felt "intellectually" inferior for their tastes. Expressing your disappointment is fine, but expressing it through vitriol is not nice.

This was me and High Society! I was enjoying something fresh(maybe because I haven't watched a lot of dramas). But I liked that the main lead was unapologetic about being with the female lead because of money. Then I come to dramabeans and read all the negative comments. It was such a downer. Made me feel like I had low taste. Definitely made me stay away from the site. But then somehow, I came back. And I've been addicted ever since!

Although I rarely comment on this site, this post was one of the loveliest I have read here on Dramabeans.
I understand the aspects of loving certain drama and having different tastes. I admit that I fall under that "elite" mentality when I question why my mother or cousin would prefer another type of drama or feed into the hype. For my cousin she prefers watching a drama with good looking OTP. To others it seem pretty shallow to watch a drama because of OTP, but I too have sat down to watch dramas that makes no sense at time or the editing was not that good all purely because of one character or actor that in my book was attractive!
For me I prefer watching dramas with a bit of mystery (my brother absolutely loves detective/police dramas), but my mom is the total opposite. She loves silly rom-com and plots that employ very common K-drama style tropes.

I remembered one particular conversation though:
Me: "Mom how come you enjoy watching dramas that make no sense sometimes and cliche? Why not realistic dramas? "
Mom: "Because those dramas have fantasy elements. Because you get to jump into fantasy without having to think about real life."

I think that conversation struck me as a reminder that we all have preferences.
I have been on the side of the minority when it comes to loving underrated dramas or not enjoying popular dramas, especially DOTS. There was always someone asking me why I didn't enjoy it. Well, I couldn't despite loving SJK and SHK (all the way back in Full House).Reading the comments above about different preferences/tastes is really comforting as I was on both sides.

I love beans of wisdom posts because it provide a feeling of community. I know that DB staff censor spam or hateful comments, but knowing that there is someone out there with the same opinions on something you particularly love is comforting. In addition, I always find myself reading comments and my friends would ask why I do. It's because of the community, it's because of the people that share different views and lifestyle. Perhaps that view is negative or really sad, but it's the comment that shed light into a situation, perspective, or person.

Sure I might not move physically in response to that comment on a particular site, but maybe somewhere or sometime my way of thinking will change thanks to a comment. Even if it's only 1%, that 1% is the "moved" and "response" that Jin Sung was talking about.
So thanks for the comments everyone :)

P.S. I love the hilarious comments, people are so creative and funny.

LaisFred's comment speaks to me ! I could never "enjoy" american shows and i was never emotionally engaged while watching one, they just bored me because everything seemed so cold and less human but i could never explain it to my friends (who still don't understand why i dropped GOT xD). Yes it's the different human interaction, kdrama are much more "human" to me i guess :D

Thank you sooo much Javabeans for hiding the MotW spoilers. I'm only half through the show and I have been staying away from everything related to the show to avoid spoilers, and I definitely don't want to accidentally read about the ending.

I for one (am I really going to admit it?), liked Cheese in the trapped. I know, I know, ahahaha. I've watched the series first before reading about the issues online and the original webtoon, and without this prior knowledge and everything else, I'm a Baek In Ho and Hong Seol shipper.
