Lee Jong-seok becomes gazillionaire in W–Two Worlds
by girlfriday
The first official stills are out for W–Two Worlds, MBC’s new suspense romance drama from the writer of Nine and Queen Inhyun’s Man and the PD of She Was Pretty. The drama features an inter-dimensional romance between a man and a woman — Lee Jong-seok (Pinocchio) and Han Hyo-joo (Dong Yi) — who are from parallel universes that exist in the same space. The first two official stills from the production feature Lee Jong-seok as a “super-chaebol,” though so far super-rich Lee Jong-seok just looks like Lee Jong-seok (okay, I guess there’s one of him in a flashy red car). The other shots are behind-the-scenes photos posted online while filming.
The new Wednesday-Thursday series has an intriguing premise about two worlds existing in the same time and space — present-day Seoul — and a mysterious incident that allows our characters to cross over the barrier between fantasy and reality. Han Hyo-joo plays a warm-hearted surgeon with a lively personality whose comic book artist father goes missing one day. She goes looking for him and finds Lee Jong-seok instead, covered in blood in her father’s studio.
Lee Jong-seok’s character is an Olympic gold medalist, a genius, and a super chaebol, with a venture capital company worth 1.5 trillion won and 800 billion won in personal assets. He won a gold medal as an 18-year-old shooter in the Olympics, and then suddenly decided to become a computer science major. He then started a venture firm and became a millionaire in his youth. It sounds unreal, but I guess that’s the point. I hope for his sake that money is transferrable between the parallel universes, although maybe it would be funnier to see a trillionaire scrounging for bus fare.
Co-starring are Lee Tae-hwan (Come Back, Ajusshi) as Lee Jong-seok’s right-hand man, Jung Yoo-jin (Moorim School) as his secretary, Kang Ki-young (Come Back, Ajusshi) as Han Hyo-joo’s surgeon colleague, and Lee Shi-un (Remember—Son’s War) as her father’s pupil.
W–Two Worlds airs on Wednesdays and Thursdays following Lucky Romance. It premieres July 20.

Well, I do get the ridiculousness. He is meant to be a totally unrealistic character created by a comic writer who wants to give him all the characteristics he thinks his character needs all to contribute to the fantasy. Kind of like Ichigo who is a hollow, a shinigami and a quincy all wrapped up in one (Looking at you Tite Kubo. *Glare*). Besides, I think there will be other characters in the fantasy world who would be just as amped up as he is. My question though is even if he can't transfer his bank account across planes, would he at least be able to access his skills in the present plane? I mean, how funny would it be if the olympic winner shooter can't even nail a dartboard that is like three inches away from his face. Lol.

The part you said, I'm pretty sure is just fan speculation that circulated around the portals after they found out Jongsuk's character is a comic book character. I don't think that's the right sequence of events.
The character description makes it sound like the first time they met was after her father disappeared and Kang Chul suddenly appeared in her world. She does travel between worlds to save him, but it was only after her dad disappeared because she believes Kang Chul is the last link to her father so she's determined to keep him alive in order to find her dad.

I feel like his actual genius character was Hoon from Doctor Stranger. I guess one can argue Choi Dal Po as genius, but I tend to just describe him as a very witty man with photographic memory.
The last time he had a mom and dad (alive and together) was High Kick, eh. (I haven't seen No Breathing so I'm not sure.)

But if a man with supernatural (mind-reading) power or excellent photographic memory are also considered as genius, Park Soo-ha and Choi Dal-po are genius then :D wkwk
High Kick 3! He's for sure almost had 'everything' there; the best family, neighbors, and best friend. Though it's still hurt to see his one-sided love for Kim Jiwon's character. (Okay, they need to reunite in the future - must be as a couple /.\ )
No Breathing ... forgot about the mom, but he has a dad for sure, but not a good one. His dad is the type of parents that never satisfied with their child/children. Heol

Like Itenoria said that's the point of his character. He is a comic book character the heroine's father created. The show is actually making fun of the unrealistic heroes in kdramas. It's like her father saw how popular the chaebol geniuses were and made a character like them but dialed up to 100.

I was slightly worried about this drama's plot for a while, the reason why I became less worried was because Han Hyojoo described it as "nice and simple" a while ago. Sometimes these type of plots try way too hard to be complicated just for the sake of being complicated, it becomes obnoxious. I prefer simple nicely structured plots, that's why one of my favorite sci-fis is the jmovie 'Summer Time Machine Blues', the plot sounds so simple-borderline-dumb but it turned out clever as hell. So I hope this one turns out neat instead of messy.

You tell me how you're gonna react when you're holding a cup of hot drink and then someone pulling your arm? He wasn't even staring at the fan; he was looking behind him, thinking it was his manager pulling his arm. And I am not someone who like to ruin others career you know.
And even though you have the right to voice your opinion, not all will be open mind and respect your opinion. Some will mad at you and some will give their piece of sarcatism.

Which he has profusely apologised for.
I only see this sucking up to fans business in Korea. He should not have apologised. We shouldn't expect celebrities to always be on their best behaviour. They're human, they have bad days too.
Have you ever seen Hollywood or Bollywood celebrities subtly stick their finger up at Paparazzi? It happens a lot, and I don't blame them for it. Paparazzi and fans can be a pain in the ass sometimes.
Kpop group BTS got pushed and shoved the other day at a Taiwan airport by rabid fans, yet said nothing in follow-up interviews. All looked mighty upset and shaken though. They should've spoken out and told their fans off but they didn't, because they would've ended up like LJS too.

You're allowed to think that. All celebrities have public personas anyway and odds are we're wrong about most of their personalities whether we think they're nice or mean. Doesn't matter in the end.
Jongsuk was right though when he said that everything he does from that moment forward people would claim that he's just putting on an act. I want him to stop caring and just live his life. If he doesn't want people touching him then that's his right as a human being, I wish he never apologized for that.

I don't get why people are getting on the fact that Lee Jong-Seok's character is SUPER unrealistic. That's the POINT. He is literally a comic book character in this kdrama. It's a meta look at how kdrama heroes tend to be these over-the-top genius chaebols. The heroine's father probably saw how popular the genius chaebol character was in Korean media and made a character like that for his own comic. I actually love how over-the-top LJS character is and I hope the meta jokes are plentiful.
I have a lot of faith in this writer, plus I love the cast involved so I am super excited for this.

‘W’ Unofficial Character Descriptions
>-- Oh Hyunjoo (HHJ) (female, resident medical intern at hospital)
One day, Hyunjoo receives a series of urgent calls from a senior doctor they call ‘Crazy Dog’. She rushes back to the emergency room but finds the senior doctor missing. It was Park Joo-bom, his father’s chief assistant, who is looking for her desperately. Hyunjoo’s dad is Oh Sung-woo, a comic book artist who is so famous that every person in Korea knows him. Joo-bum tells Hyunjoo that her father has gone missing.
This particular day is the deadline to hand in the draft for the final chapter of ‘W’, the megahit manhwa that has been publishing for more than ten years. The whole country is waiting with bated breath at what ending will await the main character, Kang Chul… yet Sung-woo has vanished into thin air on this momentous day.
Hyunjoo rushes to Sung-woo’s office, where Joo-bom is waiting for her. He tells Hyunjoo that her father had once said that he was going to kill off Kang Chul in the final chapter. When Hyun-joo sees what is on her father’s computer monitor, she is shocked.
What she sees is a picture of Kang Chul covered in blood from multiple stab wounds, lying on the floor. The image sent chills through her body; for one moment, she felt as if Kang Chul’s death is even more important than her father’s disappearance. It’s not hard to imagine what readers would feel when they saw this ending.
Could it be that someone knew about the ending and decided to kidnap her father?
At that moment, Kang Chul opened his eyes. Hyunjoo feels as if someone was tugging on her sleeve. At first she thought it was caught on the drawer, but what grabbed onto her was a man’s had, drenched in blood.
The next thing she knows, Hyunjoo is pulled into the monitor, and into Kang Chul’s world.
>> - Kang Chul (LJS) (male, risk manager and investor, Olympian gold medalist at competitive shooting)
Kang Chul was first known to the world 18 years ago since he was the son of famous Olympic Shooting athlete Kang Hyun-joong and won a medal for air-rifle shooting himself. He later gave up on the sport to study computer engineering at an elite university.
One day, his parents, grandmother and younger sister all passed away in a shockingly cruel murder case. Although Chul was able to escape death, he also became a prime suspect in the case. After a year of being detained in jail and interrogated in court, his life was completely ruined. Although he was found to be innocent, Chul left school and disappeared.
After 10 years, everyone has long forgotten about the case and Kang Chul came into the public eye again as a successful businessman.
Olympic medalist, genius computer engineer student, tragic family background, his name still not totally cleared of murder… he went through all this and became the youngest chaebol in Korea. Kang Chul’s life is too dramatic and unrealistic, it is a heroic tale that can only exist...

Kang Chul’s life is too dramatic and unrealistic, it is a heroic tale that can only exist in movies or comic books.
Some people criticize that he came to fame through developing a game that has caused some social problems, there are even some who still think he murdered his own family. Perhaps to answer these queries, after his company’s stock was issued and he earned his fortune, Chul set up a professional detective channel called ‘W’.
Inspired by how corrupt and useless the police were 10 years ago, this broadcast channel has its own investigative team that looks into cases. Chul even issued a prize of 10 billion won to the person who can find his families’ murderer. ‘W’ created a frenzy where everyone began looking for the killer and also worshipping their new hero, Kang Chul.
One day, Kang Chul received a call from his most trusted person, an ex-prosecutor named Han Sung-hoon (42, male), which said he had found a deciding witness. This was also the day Kang Chul will meet Oh Hyunjoo.
Kang Chul arranged a meeting with this anonymous witness at Hotel H at 10pm. Suddenly, someone ran towards him with a knife and started stabbing him; just when he thought he was going to die for no reason like his family

Kang Chul arranged a meeting with this anonymous witness at Hotel H at 10pm. Suddenly, someone ran towards him with a knife and started stabbing him; just when he thought he was going to die for no reason like his family

Boy, they really threw in everything but the kitchen sink at the character description huh?
But I guess since we're talking about fantasy parallel universes, that that it's meant to be hyper unrealistic?
The premise sounds so different and interesting so fingers-crossed they can pull it off!

I read it somewhere that the director praised the script writing that it was as if he was watching an American tv series

I don't know if anyone here knows The Social Network fandom. Over there, we deal with super genius/self-made billionaires/big-time venture capitalists/Olympic players/chaebols /founders of multi-billion valuation companies every day. And those characters are all based on real people from the real world.
So when I read the hero has 7 hundred million assets? I was like 'um, isn't that too little for an unrealistic character?' LoL.

thats the point though, its suppose to be a comic book character that is made up and not real and the male lead and the female lead live in the same time period but different worlds.

You're forgetting this is from South Korea instead of the western world. Even though his character is fictional, the money ballpark is likely based off of the existing assets/networth of successful businesses/businessmen in South Korea.

Loved She Was Pretty and Queen In-hyun's Man. Not the biggest fan of Nine and I've never seen Han Hyo-joo in anything, she looks really beautiful. Lee Jong-seok is possibly my least favourite actor and I haven't been able to finish anything he was the lead in. I'm hoping this will be the drama will be the one that helps me understand his appeal.

Not a huge fan of LJS but always seem to end up watching his drama because of his co-stars. You gonna admit he's got a real luck with all his female partners on screen.

His luck is in the sense that he gets paired with very popular stars. Now whether these women can act and if the dramas aren't full of plot holes and pointless writing, ala Doctor Stranger style, that's different. To this day, I still shudder when I remember the experience that was Doctor Stranger!

"His luck is in the sense that he gets paired with very popular stars."
Why are you guys trying to rewrite history lol. His 'luck' is that he generally picks good scripts and knows how to go well with his costars so they elevate each other's popularity.
Lee Boyoung was not that popular before IHYV, she had lead roles in the past but had dwindling popularity and in recent years she more commonly did weekend drama for an elderly fanbase. No one expected IHYV to become so popular because both Jongsuk and Lee Boyoung weren't that big.
Jin Seyeon was not popular, period. They basically brought her in as a last minute replacement.
Park Shinhye was already popular in her own right, but by then Jongsuk already had his own popularity from IHYV.
When news first broke that W was courting Jongsuk and Han Hyojoo, Hyojoo's rep said that she actually got the script a month prior but wanted to wait and see who the lead actor would be before she decided to take it or not. Then she signed on with Jongsuk.

lee bo-young was coming off my daughter seo-young before ihyv and was arguably the biggest name in dramadom going into it.

@Nathaniel
It was a weekend drama targeted towards the elderly, they get higher ratings than weekdays but it doesn't translate to popularity. If those type of weekend dramas were so sought after, you'd be seeing so many bigger stars in those 50-100 episode dramas on the weekends but you never will. The Korean public never expected IHYV to get popular off Lee Boyoung and Jongsuk, and knetizens still talk about how unexpected it was because Lee Boyoung was a weekend drama star and Jongsuk wasn't popular yet.

If this is a character from a comic brought to life then this could be an amazing series. I can't help but remember Stranger than Fiction which had a character come to life from a book- except well, if there is an opposite to every part of this premise it would be that movie! :p Its about a loser, daily office worker who learns he is a character in a book about to be killed off by his depressed creator and he decides matters into his own hands!

I think it's not released yet. They usually release the full OST complete with the instrumentals after the show ends.
