Suspense drama W–Two Worlds preps for inter-dimensional romance
by girlfriday
Cast and crew gathered at the first table read for MBC’s new summer romance suspense drama W–Two Worlds, the drama formerly known as W. I’m actually glad about the title change, because googling a one-letter title is no fun for anybody. Lee Jong-seok (Pinocchio) and Han Hyo-joo (Dong Yi) headline the fantasy romance between a man and a woman living in two parallel universes existing concurrently in present-day Seoul.
The new 16-episode Wednesday-Thursday drama comes from writer Song Jae-jung, who is an expert at interweaving two universes into one story (see: her previous time-space-benders Nine and Queen Inhyun’s Man), and PD Jung Dae-yoon of last year’s hit rom-com She Was Pretty. The drama is about two worlds coexisting in the same space—one is the reality as we know it, and the other is a fantasy realm—but the two worlds collide when Lee Jong-seok and Han Hyo-joo’s characters meet.
Lee Jong-seok plays a former Olympic gold medalist in shooting who made it big as a venture capitalist and became a young chaebol. Well, as far as dramaland chaebols go, this is a step up from a guy who inherits his fortune from an angry chairman dad. He’s described as a cool-headed geeeeenius, though they don’t even tell us what kind of genius he is.
Han Hyo-joo plays an affectionate, outgoing, lively second-year resident in cardiothoracic surgery. Her father (Kim Eui-sung, Six Flying Dragons) is an ill-tempered comic book artist who goes missing one day, and when the heroine goes looking for Dad, she finds a bloody Lee Jong-seok in his studio instead.
Lee Tae-hwan (Come Back, Ajusshi) plays Lee Jong-seok’s bodyguard and faithful right-hand man, and Jung Yoo-jin (Moorim School) will be his secretary. Neighborhood Laywer Jo Deul-ho’s hilarious loan shark Park Wan-sang has been cast as an assemblyman and Lee Jong-seok’s longtime enemy. In the other dimension, Kang Ki-young (Come Back, Ajusshi) will play Han Hyo-joo’s colleague and surgical resident, and Lee Shi-un (Remember—Son’s War) will be her father’s pupil.
The writer sat down with the actors one-on-one before the script read to go over each of their characters in-depth, and the PD said to the cast, “You are all the stars of your own lives. The characters each of you have undertaken are the stars of their worlds. Whether the role is big or small, please engage with the mindset that you are the star. Actors are the ones who put flesh and bone to characters and show them as living people. We’ve assembled strong actors with a lot of experience. I hope that you’ll create living characters.”
So do we all, PD-nim. So do we all.
W–Two Worlds will follow Lucky Romance beginning July 20.

LJS is back with his genius characters again
We've had a genius mind reader a genius doctor a genius and now a genius chaebol
I'm down for this the writer cast everything is on point
I hope this does good it's up against KWB and Suzy (frankly this already looks 100x better)

He will be the main character (hero) in her father's comic book , that's why he won't be like any regular guy (& by genius here they mean very smart, no super powers or anything like that)

Whoever has watched LJS's drama knows that his only genius character was in Doctor stranger & maybe this one, and I personally don't mind someone who has 9 projects (6 dramas & 3 movies) just in the past 3 years plays 2 genius characters at the end!

Really? It depends on your definition of genius. In IHYV he was gifted with the ability to read people's mind, but he's still a normal high schooler. In Pinocchio he's good at memorizing, but again not to the extent of genius I think? He wasn't exactly a geeenius reporter or something.

He had photographic memory in pinocchio. Didn't you watch the scene where he looks at some papers for 0.2 seconds and memorises all the phone numbers/info written on it? He's also been a genius swimmer in his movie 'no breathing' plus he was pro at fighting in school 2013. It's not unreasonable for people to label his roles as always genius.

Come on my friend, he wasn't a genius swimmer, he was a perfect swimmer who practices days & nights, in that movie maybe u can say SIG was a genius swimmer! And in in School 2013 he was opposite of the definition of genius, a lazy student with low grades in his lessons , just he was like as a gangster who knows how to fight.

You guys, this isn't my word, this is how all of the promos read. Genius mind reader, genius doctor, genius reporter, and now genius chaebol/sharp shooter. Yes, Kdrama seems to define geniusness differently, but isn't that supposed to be the joke here?

They just like to add the word genius to every male main character, no matter what their profession is. But frankly, many of these "geniuses" are not any more genius than the average lead character in Korea or the US or anywhere else. Just the normal successful, good at their job main lead you find on TV everywhere, though in Korea there is also an added prerequisite that they be rich. Filthy rich. The whole family.
South Korea just REALLY REALLY likes their big bombastic adjectives (that they stick everywhere)

I so excited for this one because everyone one from the Lee Jong Suk, Han Hyo Joo and industry insiders seem to be really confident in the script. And with writer Song Jae-jung behind it I trust her to create a good drama, but I have never seen anything with the director so I just hope the directing can keep up with the writing. Is PD Jung Dae-yoon a good director?

Of course he is a genius chaebol with an Olympic medal. This is a kdrama, do we expect any less? And of course she is a surgeon. In kdrama world women are poor candy girls, doctors, or lawyers. Unless we are talking older women, in which case they are overbearing moms or evil mother-in-laws. That is just how the kdrama universe works. So why do we question it? Although, for once I would like to see the roles reversed. The woman is the young and hot genius entrepreneur with the killer body and bad attitude who falls in love and pursues the gold hearted candy boy with four part-time jobs who volunteers at the local orphanage or pet shelter. Or course, he is also pursued by an equally amazing lady who just happens to be his court appointed attorney when he is framed for a crime by the evil father-in-law (let's give the mother-in-law a break this time). Just once, please.

So ready for dramas to feature a reversal scenario!
Some that come close:
- Modern Farmer: sweet pretty ordinary guy, two love interests (1. ordinary, but capable and strong, nothing to invite wrist-grabbing or headdesk-action. 2. vulnerable, but famous and still pretty independent). Also has lots of other male characters who could fit the reversal scenario, even if they don't have two out-of-this-world women chasing them.
- The Innocent Man: even if he's a genius, he's seriously downtrodden and used to be the nicest guy around. Two love interests, one who's a genius chaebol and one who's really wealthy.
Other than that there's The Lover where several of the women actually support their bf's financially and webdrama The Flatterer where the main male lead is smart yet not a genius and sometimes has that vibe that female leads usually have (and the girl pursuing him is tough as nails).
And webdrama We Broke Up has a really sweet guy with two love interests who are both capable women, even if they're not genius chaebols (though one of them is pretty wealthy I think and has a really good job (not doctor or lawyer)).

The male lead has a sweet guy friend who keeps telling him to choose the 2nd lady since the main lady keeps making him cry OR because she has a father who vehemently rejects the man since in the past, the father loved the man's mother and they promised to get married but then the mother died and it left a big hole in the father's heart everytime he saw the main lead.

I did a double-take reading this, cos...didn't I just read it again above, at 1.3, unless I had been scrolling up instead of down?? Haha..
Well, I guess dramaverses all over the world are superlative-driven... It must be implicitly agreed upon that most of the characters we watch on screen need an extra boost to their character descriptions, by either making them the very best at some trait (e.g., genius; super-power-gifted; not only abnormally intelligent but also possessing of a photogenic memory; super-humanly-attractive; etc.), or the worst of the lot (e.g., extra demeaning; rotten through every cell and vertebrae; legendary even among the worst of all thugs and vermin; and so on).
Or, maybe it's just Lee Jong-Seok?? Maybe there's just something lacking, or too mediocre (?!) and harmless-boy-next-door, about him that he's just always given that extra boost above and beyond the usual, and gets to be some sort of genius in every incarnation/iteration of every drama he stars in?
Since I personally don't think LJS needs that much assistance--as School 2013 sealed his acting talent for me--it's just as well to treat it as sheer randomness that his past roles have merely been randomly genius, and not so by anyone's design.

Yeah they were all really good at what they did or smart but it wasn't the same character. Also he wasn't a genius in high kick(the bottom of his class) or in school, or hot young bloods, face reader, when i was the prettiest, or no breathing(the whole premise is that he trained really hard but still wasn't better than the genius SIG)
And honestly i think that this is what they do to make the characters more interesting. LJS last big roles have been that he has a tragic past and an orphan, hes never played a chaebol which hes always wanted so thats cool haha.
I don't think anyone is getting that his character in this drama is fake because he's a character from a comic book. I think the whole thing is like a parody" of the whole kdrama land thing well...hopefully

I think people are missing the point of Jongsuk's character being a Olympic medalists shooter, a genius, and a chaebol. His character and background is literally too dramatic to be real or exist in reality, a character that can only exist in a fictional world.
I would understand these comments if the writer had a long history of poorly written stories/characters, but this is Song Jaejung so I'm surprised people don't have more trust in her.

I'm quite curious at the plot though. So is LJS (being his Olympic medallist/chaebol/genius) living in the realm which we are familiar in or in the other realm? The two characters are living in different realms right? Will it be like LJS accidentally crossed over to the realm HHJ is living in, explaining his bloodied appearance? Hmmmm intriguing. Anyway am really looking forward to this drama <3

This is my #1 anticipated drama. I love everyone involved in this project. I also love parallel universe shows and this is so refreshingly new for kdramas.
I like how people are getting on how LJS is playing a geniuuuus but he is a comic book character, so he was written that way by a comic book writer. In my mind I see it as a meta nod to all the geniuses that flood kdramas, by having this comic book writer follow that trend and make his lead character also a genius.

Bingo. Song Jaejung is intentionally (and with purpose) giving Kang Chul (Jongsuk) characteristics that is popularly used in fictional comics/dramas/films... because he is from one of those platforms. And here people are being salty that he's described as a genius LOL.

I wonder how Kang Chul's going to feel once he realizes that all the suffering he went through was by the whim of one man though, because that would essentially make the comic writer the God of Kang Chul's world. I hope they expand on that, it'd be an interesting topic.

Will be watching this for Han Hyo-joo. Dong Yi is one of my all-time favorite dramas and it's been so long since she's been on the small screen. Can't wait for July!!

I adore Han Hyo Jo, but I almost didn't recognize her in the pictures. For a second I thought it was a new actress until I read down further.

I'll be watching for Han Hyo Joo! I would have preferred a more masculine male lead but Lee Jong Seok's a good actor so I'm sure he'll be able to sell the chemistry.

Please do well, W.. I'll wait impatiently for July to come. Actually I don't really mind LJS's character as a geeeenius, he is a comic book character after all. Maybe the writer will subvert the genius male lead trope just like Oh Hae-young Again subvert the bitchy second lead female trope. And with this writer, I believe it can happen.

This drama's title reminds me of an anime I recently finished called Dimension W. From wiki "In the year 2036, a fourth dimensional axis called Dimension W is proven to exist. Cross-dimensional electromagnetic induction devices, known as coils, were developed to draw out the inexhaustible supply of energy that exists in Dimension W .. "
Of all letters, they chose W. Is it because it's W for world?
Anyways, I found it interesting as the anime is about another dimension, and this drama is about another dimension too.
I will definitely check this drama out. Sounds interesting!

Someone commented in a past article that it could actually mean W = double U = 2 Universes. Not sure how true that is but it sounds cool, right?

He is a genius athletic and super rich. She is a doctor (a lawyer, journalist, and though it does not matter), and she has no chance of avoiding a meeting with him. They will be together no metter what, and in the final show return to the past and they played together in the sandbox. What an original storyline lol. One and the same. With LJS's specific exterior he has the opportunity to play only such repetitive roles. And my opinion, HHJ is not such a great actress that when she appears all fled in the side. All these rave blah blah blah no guarantee of success so that all it will be seen later.

This is late but, there is way more to the story than. LJS character is a comic book character that HHJ's father writes. I can give you the plot but its unofficial so theres wouldn't be a point. I like this story because its so unpredictable till now

Lee Jong Suk and Han Hyo Joo don't match, and why this drama air on MBC? It will better if air on SBS? Recently, most of MBC drama so terrible (GMB, TFIP, Monster no logic)

It doesn't matter if it's aired on the BIG 3, or cable TV like tVN or JTBC. It's the script of the drama that matters the viewers' ratings and not the broadcasting station.

Sounds like a perfect to watch drama. There are lots of supposedly good dramas floating around but nothing seems perfect in terms of casting, script & directing. Oh Hae Young is fantastic at the moment & hope W follows soon. Can't wait..

OMG! After a while I came to read (or hoping to) news from LMH and i stumble into my other fav LJS new drama and it's so close to premiere ! So cool! LJS is an amazing actor. I don't know the lead female but I love him !
He was awesome in IHYV and pinocchio and school! I'm so excited. I hope he doesn't pull another choice like doctor stranger! I won't forgive him for that. I won't also forgive LMH for doing Heirs

I actually dont care about the genius part tbh. That has been thrown around in almost every kdramas so I've been desensitize about it tbh. So is Candy type character. And... I like both leads and has no complaints on their acting abilities BUT both Nine & QIHM's final episode was rather meh-approaching-wtf-is-this-ending to me, so I dont know. Hopefully W will have better ending than the previous two?

From what I have yes. He's part of the comic book that HHj's father writes and somehow the two worlds collide. I read rumors for the plot but Theyre just rumors on tumblr so not sure how accurate
