Kim Go-eun offered lead opposite Gong Yoo in fantasy romance Goblin
by javabeans
Ah! I’d be more than happy to see Kim Go-eun (Cheese in the Trap) paired alongside Gong Yoo (Train to Busan) for his upcoming fantasy-romance drama Goblin for tvN, to be written by Descended From the Sun star writer Kim Eun-sook, so it’s good news to hear that she’s been offered the role and is currently considering it.
The plot is full of fantasy elements, centering around a goblin (the “protector”) who needs to take a human bride in order to end his immortal life, and the amnesiac reaper (the “taker”) he takes up residence with, meeting somewhere “between fate and a curse.” They’ll usher deceased souls from this world to the afterlife, and the drama promises to show everyday lives that are mysterious, sad, strange, and beautiful. (It sounds quite heavy on the supernatural/fantastical, but I’m reminded of Dead Like Me and its mix of reaper-fantasy and modern-world living. Perhaps Goblin will be in a similar vein?)
Already there have been rumors and refutations of director attachments, with PD Lee Eung-bok popping up as a possibility, although tvN clarified that no director decisions have been made yet. I can see the excitement over the prospect, considering PD Lee just worked with writer Kim Eun-sook on Descended From the Sun, and we all know what a massive hit that was (his previous credits include Discovery of Romance, Secret, and School 2013). If true, it would mark PD Lee’s move away from KBS to tvN, although after initial news broke, a source with the KBS drama department stated that he is still at KBS. (Well, we know how good KBS is at letting go of things, which is to say, not at all.)
It’s been a while since Gong Yoo has done a good drama (was that really Coffee Prince in 2007? The Drama That Will Not Be Named hardly qualifies), although his film career has at least been more fruitful. Meanwhile, even though Cheese in the Trap was sort of a mixed bag, controversy aside, it did make Kim Go-eun known to the mainstream public and earned her well-deserved attention. She’d already been noticed as a promising film actress, but Cheese made her a household name. I’ll have my fingers crossed for this to work out.
Goblin will be a Friday-Saturday drama on tvN and is set to premiere in November.

Despite my love for Gong Yoo and my desire to see him on TV weekly, I'm not optimistic about him starring in a Kim Eunsook drama. He was so well regarded in films in the recent years, I'm greedy for good writing to keep him pushing up.

mmm, not really feeling this. i've been pretty cool about her since the whole cheese debacle, and i was only lukewarm about her prior to that.
i liked her acting in cheese well enough, but overall she gives off this sort of... haughty vibe. that i'm not a fan of. doesn't help that she reminds me of someone i don't like very well in real life.
i will say though, that she can probably act the heck out of this role.

That's your personal issue - it's not Kim Go-eun's fault you're projecting issues with your real-life acquaintance onto her public persona.
As for being read as 'haughty'.... I will say she doesn't seem to pander to the public or go out of her way to look like a people-pleaser the way many Korean idols and even actors do. But she's not someone whose career was built on fanservicey projects, so it makes sense.

yes it certainly is my issue, but i wasn't asking anyone else to make it theirs. i was simply expressing my opinion. it seriously shouldn't be an offense to express an unpopular or negative opinion, so long as it's done with maturity.
and ultimately, my issues with my real life acquaintance have quite little to do with my not liking kim go-eun. it's more like this: on top of a few concrete reasons for my disliking her (something which happened gradually over time), she just also happens to remind me of that person. which doesn't help in improving my perception of her.
even "dislike" is too strong—i don't dislike her. yet. i appreciated her performance in cheese. but i don't particularly like her either. maybe i'll warm up to her eventually. after all, it happened with park shin-hye! but right now, no, i'm not particularly a fan.

I thought there wasn't anything wrong with pointing out that whatever you feel about her is a personal issue.
I'm always wary of judging actors by whatever we see of their offscreen personalities, whether that's positive or negative. Someone being really cute isn't going to make me forget their performances suck, and that goes the other way too - as long as an actor brings it onscreen, I'm not bothered by them coming off as brusque or cold.
(and this does not just apply to k-ent - Christian Bale may need serious anger management lessons, but I still liked him as Batman and in his carious other movies).

all right. i just felt that you were implying i should have kept my comment to myself.
i guess i tend to be the opposite. an actor's perceived offscreen personality does tend to influence how likeable i find them as an actor. it's not always the case, and it can certainly always change, but it's true that if i have a positive perception of an actor, i'll tend to be a bit more forgiving towards them in general. and sometimes it's not about their perceived personality, but more based on the general vibe i get from them. one of those things where you can't really provide a valid concrete reason as to why you don't like them—you just don't. ha.
anyway, kim tae-hee has sustained her career practically solely on likability. she has such a a positive public persona, she's so publicly humble about her shortcomings as an actress, and she's so pretty to boot (her beauty is treated like it's a korean national treasure, seriously), that i think folks generally tend to cut her a break. yeah, she still gets a ton of criticism, but i think generally she gets a pass because of her good image.
lee byung-hun on the other hand—great actor with a messy personal life. i have no idea how his post-scandal projects have fared, but i get the impression that his public image is still on the rocks.
i mean, there's a reason why celebrities (and especially i think korean celebs) work so hard on their public image, right? you have to be likable in order to be bankable. technically, ideally, you should be able to separate likability and skill, but too often it just doesn't work that way.

I personally prefer to have no knowledge of actors when it comes to offscreen matters - maybe when it comes to their acting, sure, but I have no interest in their personal views, favourite foods and such - unless they've done something extreme and reprehensible (I will not watch a Roman Polanski film for this reason - can't support the work of a convicted rapist).
I suppose, having been exposed to western entertainment where image-building cannot entirely compensate for a lack of talent or propel someone otherwise lacking in ability to top star status the way k-ent does, the extremes to which it's taken in Korea always surprise me.
hell, even in Hollywood (which is far from perfect, especially when it comes to representation), someone churning out performances on the level of Kim Tae-hee would end up relegated to teen tv shows or out on her ear - in general, looks are considered important but don't trump talent or the lack thereof, and all the PR can't disguise that. I mean, even Angelina Jolie and Scarlett Johansson have an Oscar and a Tony respectively - they might have built their careers on their looks rather than raw talent but they wouldn't have got away with being completely lacking the way some k-ent stars do.
And talent and success can make up for any cracks in image - Lee Byung-heon's name may be mud, but his last movie was still one of 2015's most successful. People might hate what he's done in his personal life, but as long as he delivers onscreen, they'll still go watch him.

That goes for both 'sides', so to speak - on one hand you have people going off an actor's roles and insisting that the real-life person must be some Machiavelli too, and on the other you have people denigrating an actress who has more than proved her abilities time and again, just because of some ill-timed comments in an interview.
I'm not here for either of those.

Kim Go-eun unfortunately pulled a scandal 'own goal' so to speak, by inserting herself into an issue that she had successfully been saved from. Before CITT she wasn't well known in the drama world, and managed to win over viewers with the early episodes. Even when the whole brouhaha started, she actually had people commiserating with her, and supporting her. And she was poised to leave the drama, as a drama darling.
Then for some inadvertent reason, after things were starting to die down, she decided to give an interview that thrust her back into a negative spotlight, and back on people's 'non-fave' list. The interview and her response were so ill advised, and then the subsequent handling of the matter by her team did not help matters. In SK were even minute events can blow up, into almost career ending "scandals" she really should have just left well alone.

but haven't we all been there? or are there, quite often?
yes, i know the argument that an actor should only be good at acting. but i think the importance of looks + charm can't be denied. charm is practically indispensable in my book. good looks are highly valuable, though i say that you can't sustain a career for very long based solely on looks and no charm or talent.
i can think of several instances where i wished for "better" eye candy in a drama, both male and female. because a huge chunk of the viewing experience (films, dramas) is the fun of looking at a bunch of sensationally good looking people.
faces like song hye-kyo, kim tae-hee, kim ji-won aren't the kinds of faces you can see on the streets everyday. that's why people like to see them and admire them onscreen. there's the fun of watching people as beautiful as them. they're almost like otherworldly creatures.
quite often in real life, appearance comes first. when seeing a new person the first thing you see about them is their external appearance, the general vibe they give off. and in those first few seconds you develop your initial impression of that person, which in many cases tends to be pretty enduring, and it's a superficial one.
none of this is intended to rag on kim go-eun's appearance. she has an interesting look, and the shape of her eyes are more of an art than you'd think when it comes to asian features. but she wouldn't fit korea's beauty ideal, which prizes western features most highly.
i don't think there's anything wrong with people preferring more traditionally pretty faces like song hye-kyo's or kim tae-hee's. beauty is subjective. there will still be plenty of people who will appreciate and prefer kim go-eun's brand of beauty.
but basically my point is, and no offense intended, i think if we paused to stop and consider, many of us are superficial creatures to a degree.

yeah we all like to look at attractive people but if people think eye candy matter to that extent and so much more than even basic acting talent then why watch dramas? Go see a slideshow of eye candy pictures then.
People might be attractive but to me, if they can't act then they become really unattractive and I don't want to see their face on my screen because it comes with such wooden acting and lack of expression.

I find her incredibly charming. When I saw her in CIIT, I was amazed by how attractive I found her, because when I'd just seen pictures, I thought she was average-looking (which didn't make a difference to me re: her being in the drama though). But in CIIT I thought she had the kind of screen presence that really shines through. And I think she's gorgeous now. Which is why I don't think "visually stunning" is an objective criteria. I've never found Kim Tae Hee the least bit attractive, even compared to regular actresses and idols, and yet she's considered a visual goddess. So I might be shallow, but I love Kim Go Eun's visuals and want to see more of her.

This mentality is exactly the reason why talented young actresses (including Kim Ji-won, btw) have ended up being shut out of drama lead roles despite proving themselves over and over again - because people like you prize a pretty face or 'popularity' over what they actually do in the role.

I was stunned to be honest, but she said, "the more you look at her, the more beautiful she gets." KGE Commands! attention, she just has "it" - yes, that mysterious alchemy that your list of "past female leads" admitted also have. However, after watching her films, and countless dramas of your "past female leads", in my opinion, KGE is hands down the most talented of the lot.

Honestly, get her some eyeliner and Go-eun would pull a Ga-in on us. It's not that she isn't pretty, it's she doesn't pander to what the public wants. After watching her in Coin locker Girl, I wouldn't want her to either. Part of her charm is her ability to immerse in a role. If the role requires her to be visually stunning, she will convince you that she is Miss Korea.

Funny, I feel the exact opposite of you OP. I actually don't understand why Kim Ji Won is thought of as "attractive". I think she's pretty lacking in charm and face. Kim Go Eun, on the other hand, I'm so enamored by. She's charming and has something about her that's easy and likable. A "realness" maybe? I've always preferred that type anyway. Kim Go Eun and Ha Ji Won aren't conventionally "beautiful" or beauty contestant pretty like Song Hye Kyo. They're a little bit more rough around the edges and unique in facial structure. I think that makes them prettier, but in a less commonly pretty way.

I feel like it would be hard for anyone to say no to A Kim Eun-Sook drama after the runaway success of DoTS, but this show sounds like such a train wreck. I just have a bad feeling about Kim Eun-Sook venturing so far from her bread and butter romances (which in all honesty aren't my favorites though I often watch them for the actors) into fantasy drama world. It's bad enough that Gong Yoo is attached since I should be excited about him returning to drama land, but I'm not. Sigh.

Okay, sorry to go into a tirade here but seriously, WHAT is with the sudden disturbing prevalence of the old man / young girl pairings??Let's see, off the top of my head...
- Entertainer: (Ji Sung, 39 - Hyeri, 21)
- Mirror of the Witch: (Yoon Shi-Yoon, 29 - Kim Sae-Ron, 15)
- Beautiful Gong-Shim: (Nam Goong-Min, 38 - Minah - 23)
- Flower in Prison: (Go Soo - 37, Jin Se-Yeon - 22)
- Bring it On, Ghost: (Taecyeon, 27 - Kim So-Hyun, 16)
- Scarlet Heart: (Lee Jun-Ki, 34 - IU, 23)
- Doctors: (Kim Rae-Won, 35 - Park Shin-Hye, 26)
:/ ...Well, some of these make me more uncomfortable than others but I won't point fingers... *cough*she's a fucking minor*cough*
Then the rest of the the batch (that have romance) seem to mostly have casts where the male lead is like 3-6 years older than the female lead (4 seems to be especially common), which is fine... Except that there are no currently airing dramas where the female lead is significantly older than the male lead. The closest is Lucky Romance, which aired today... (Hwang Jung-Eum is one measly year older than Ryu Jun-Yeol).
More disturbing still is that the age gaps are rarely addressed or acknowledged as problematic in the context of the drama. In noona romances, the age gap is never a non-issue. It's always one of the obstacles to overcome. Not so in these 'ahjussi' romances.
I'm sorry, I love Kim Go-Eun and I love Gong-Yoo, but I hate this trend. It's bad enough it happens in Hollywood. I don't need it in dramaland.

All these couples are super side worthy except KRW and PSH. She's twenty six years old, which is already considered your late twenties. There's nothing wrong with her working opposite a thirty five year old. Their age difference isn't even in double digits lol.
They should be replaced by KYJ and PBG from Moonlight instead, KYJ is literally still a teen.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Moonlight;; Park Bo-Gum would be the youngest male lead on my list, but yeah, it's definitely troubling that Kim Yoo Jung is barely 16. I also just realised that she was born literally one day after my little sister. *deep sigh*
I'm actually not too bothered by the Doctors pairing but I thought it was worth including. 9 years is still a sizeable difference (if it was an older woman and a younger man instead, it would be a plot point of note) and KRW plays PSH's teacher / potentially superior, which puts him in a position of power over her... Which is... Yeah. Hm.

I completely agree with you on this terrible terrible trend. It makes it hard to believe that all the casting directors are not old men living out their perverted fantasies...
All these casting make my blood boil especially since I am in a constant state of conflict between wanting to watch the dramas but not being able to bring myself to do it because of the problematic casting...*MINORS*
Sadly, it is nothing new but hopefully bringing more awareness to this issue will eventually kill and bury it deep deep in the ground where it belongs.
However, I would not include Doctors on my list of dramas with problematic age gaps. 9 years between a late 20s and a mid-30s is far from cringe worthy. It is the same age difference between Lee Seunggi and Ha Jiwon in King2Hearts. I am using them as an example because in this case Ha Jiwon was the oldest and yet King2Hearts was not a Noona Romance. You would never know there was a significant age difference between the actors while watching unless you googled it. I think that will also be the case in Doctors.

I know it gets quite disturbing when a minor gets paired with a much older male eg in Secret Door when Kim Yoo-jung got paired with Lee Je-hoon who was double her age, but with PBG I feel that it's not really an issue because the age gap is smaller. KYJ is turning 17, so that's high school age, and Bo-gum is of college age. Within my social circle I know quite a few couples with age gaps like that. The girls tend to prefer guys who are more mature, so they date college guys instead of fellow classmates in high school.

I really don't see what's side eye-worthy about this particular pairing - they're just twelve years apart, which is the same age gap as between Jin Gu and Kim Ji-won in DotS (and everyone loved that one). Kim Go-eun is 25 years old, not underage or barely legal.
Same goes for Lee Jun-ki and IU, since the couple from the drama theirs is based on had a seventeen year age gap and Liu Shi Shi was 24 at the time (IU is 23).
Still grossed out by the castings of minor actresses with male leads a decade+ older, though. And yes, this is not a happy trend in general.

Yeah, okay, I get that. But it's not so much the individual pairings that bother me as much as it is the greater trend towards 10+ age gaps. And not just the trend, but also how older male/younger female age gaps get treated vs. older female/younger male. In dramas about the latter, the age gap is always an integral part of the romantic resolutions. The couple has to deal with generational differences, social opinion, opposition from the dude's mom, the whole "when you were potty training, I was graduating middle school" thing. Sometimes it's what the entire drama is about. "Noona Romance" is a thing. But when the male lead is 12 years older than the female lead, it's a non-issue.
That's not even going into how the older man age gape reinforces inherent power differences and

I was also going to say something about age and power are not unrelated... 33 vs 23 is generally quite different, in terms of where you are in life, in the workforce, how much money you make, relationship experience.

I'm really put off by the dramas trying to ignore the age gaps - like Kim So-hyun and Kim Sae-ron's dramas, where their way-too-old male leads are playing the same age as them.
But as long as it's acknowledged in-drama the way a noona romance would be and the younger lead is well into adulthood, it's not an issue. Women in their twenties dating men 10 years older is not unrealistic at all (speaking from personal experience, and IU herself has a boyfriend who's the same age as Lee Jun-ki), and at least in the case of BBJX and Entertainer, the age gap is made pretty clear in their stories.

Thing is as much these pairing are grossing you out...in real life I know 25yr old girls who got married to 35 yr old guys..When coming about choosing your partner more than age, attraction, preference, point of similarities matter, more than anything else.I have more friends who are either younger or older than me Lol.So I don't see it a much bigger issue when it's not in real life.Unless we are talking about minors here..which KGE,PSH or IU are not apparently.

I don't disagree that pairing someone like Kim Sae Ron with YSY is side-eye worthy even if they're supposed to be playing the same age in the drama but older female lead does not always equal Noona romance where said gap is addressed. Think of Sung Joon and to a lesser extent Joo Won, who tend to play characters older than their age. Sung Joon's last female lead was 9 yeas older than him, Joo Won's was 8, and their ages weren't relevant to the plot. Joo Won also worked with Choi Kang Hee who is 10 years older but I don't know if that was a noona romance because I didn't watch. Yoo Seungho also is usually paired with older leads (Seo Woo when he was 16, Yoon Eun Hye at 19). I'm guessing things like this happen if you're a hot young actor and want to strike while the iron is hot, Yeo Jin Goo is in the same path. In Kim Bum's case he was 20 to Park Jin Hee's 34 when they did Still Marry Me but that was actually a noona romance. On the other hand, Park Ha Sun was 10+ years younger than everyone else in Temptation and it was not an issue, same as that awful drama she did with Jin Goo but I guess people are paying more attention to ages now since we got the three Kim child actresses dramas in a row.

I agree with you Tsarina, this is a trend I don't like. Frankly, I find the pairings of a minor girl (or boy) with an adult man (or woman) really gross and most disturbing. I hope that it will stop soon. Is it really that hard to cast actors who are both legally adults for these romantic leads?
As for the adult younger woman/much older man pairings trend, I'm not a fan of this trend either. As if women weren't struggling enough already with impossible beauty standards, now we have to put age into the mix? I hate that this trend just perpetuates the old double standard that women over 30 are old has beens but older men, well, nothing wrong with them.

Kim Go Eun is really getting great offers from dramaland, first she was Moonlight Drawn By Clouds first choice, and now she got offered the lead for the next Kim Eun Sook drama, which is a really big deal.
I was surprised that Kim Eun Sook went with someone younger, and less of a hallyu star for this. I assumed she would go for a more established actress in her thirties to match Gong Yoo.
Anyway, I'm interested to see how a KES drama does without the backing of a big three channel.

KES dramas are such a double edged sword. DotS was definitely a good career move for SJK, for example, and I think it was actually a force for good in dramaland, but it's so painful and frustrating to see talents like him and Kim Go-eun get thrown away on tripe.

Very apt analogy lol. We should also be glad that people like Song Joong-ki and Kim Go-eun are still interested in doing dramas at all, when a lot of people of their caliber stick with Chungmuro and don't look back. I really hope they meet a project that is worthy of them down the road, although the outlook for quality dramas has been pretty bleak in recent years.

Uhhh.... Not to be a buzzkill, but shouldn't Kim Go Eun try to resolve her "Beautiful Mind"/"Cinderella And [Her] Four Nights" dilemma before adding to her plate with ANOTHER drama? I know it's kind of irrelevant, since TvN is cable, but still, even if you're trying to milk the money cow that is "Cheese In the Trap" and trying to get people to forget about all the behind-the-scenes drama from CITT, there must be a better approach to it all other than having your name in the headlines every 2-3 days about being casted or considered for another drama... Especially when people are still suffering aftershock and still have a bad taste lingering into their mouths from the whole CITT behind-the-scenes debacle
And this is coming from the perspective of someone who didn't read the CITT manga nor did I watch the drama, nor am I a super fan of Park Have Jin trying to take his side, because I'm not, because I only ever saw him in 1 drama, that is, "My Love From the Stars"... That's all just all IMHO

I've enjoyed both actors in the past and this is a pairing that excites me. Unfortunately I really don't like Kim Eun-sook's writing, especially the more recent reincarnations. DotS was a pain to watch and I didn't even end up finishing it. More worrying is the fact that the theme is heavy on the fantasy. You From the Star was okay, although extremely bipolar with the romance vs comic book action hero plots. Secret Garden totally misused the fantasy elements in its universe. I'll probably end up watching the first couple of episodes just to feel the vibe but I highly doubt I will be enjoying it. I know Gong Yoo can get me through a nonsensical drama *cough*Big*cough* but really, I don't want to go through that pain again.

It's worst in dramaland. It's rare for Chungmuro thank goodness.
Top filmmakers wants talents and that's why the top actors in Chungmuro are not the best looking dudes in the business but the most talented.
Pretty faces with limited talents don't last long in Chungmuro.

May 26, 2016 at 4:52 PM
Thank god for Chungmuro :). Personally, I think talent makes actors seem more or less attractive on screen. If they don't have intensity/charisma, even super good-looking men start to seem pretty blah to me.
To be completely off topic and superficial for a moment though, I started Jackpot finally! Choi Min-soo and Yeo Jin-gu <3333. I feel so inappropriately attracted to both of them lol...one of them is jailbait and the other is old enough to be my father.

I agree about talents making actors attractive on screen. Song Kang Ho is a winner on screen (imo) but I didn't think of him as good looking guy and that goes for Ha Jung Woo, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alan Rickman etc.
You won't be disappointed with Choi Min Soo and Yeo Jin Goo in Jackpot. We have Kwon Soon-Gyu and a new director at the helm so you know what to expect when it hit the 2nd half.
Choi Min Soo is old enough to be our dad,yes and Yeo Jin Goo is my little brother's age but hey I can't help it too lol.

Looks like she's already confirmed for the role. I'm pretty neutral about this casting news. Unlike the netizens, I don't have negative comments about Kim Go Eun's looks. Yes, she's not the ideal standard of pretty, but looking at her pictures she is quite pretty in a simple, understated way. And while I haven't seen any of her projects yet, everyone's saying how great of an actress she is so I'm quite curious to see how this drama will turn out. I had my doubts when they first announced the SHK-SJK pairing for DOTS. I love both SHK and SJK separately but I couldn't imagine them having chemistry together. Yet they proved me wrong so I'm sure KGE and Gong Yoo will make it work, too. I am still a tad disappointed about the casting news though because I was expecting them to pair Gong Yoo up with an older A-lister actress. But, it's fine, Kim Go Eun's not a bad choice.

Also an opposite opinion to some but I don't find Kim Go Eun plain at all. The girl is definitely above average anyway I see her. Just the fact that she pulled that red hair off in CITT and that my Google search of the woman has her pulling off every style she wears is proving that to me. I can't always make up in CITT comment thread
but I think she is not very good actress, the only time I like her was in Eun Gyo,
even in CITT, I find he is okay,
people tends to think people hate actress that generally get tagged as not beautiful but I don't think she is a good actress too even when I find she looks good, she embodied that SK beauty like Park So Dam but for acting,
I don't think she is bad, I think people just overpraise and overrated her bc she is not stunningly beautiful,
feels like it's an achievement for good acting and good looking rather than stunning and good acting,
she is good but her acting is not as high as Db commenters to praise her imo,

People here gave their opinions and why they like or dislike her. Thank goodness we don't do up/down votes he because it's great to read the reasons why someone dislike or like an actor, director, writer, etc.
As for me, Kim Go-eun is a fine growing actress with raw talents, something that can't be taught but she can finetune. She is a bit green around the edges in some of her movies but she is still young with a lot of opportunities to keep improving.

I hope this will help Kim Go-eun image in Korea. Those comments may represent only a small part of Korea but it's just sad how much hate you can read and feel from these. It's a complete 180° change when Cheese was, in my opinion, still good. Cheese in the Trap may have some issues but Kim Go-eun gave a realistic performance, and deserve to be praise or even respected. But realistic, I mean she felt like a real person and not just this fictional character. She embodied Seol's persona really well.
Though I'm not big fan of the writer, she has this ability to launch and give her characters a positive vibe, no matter how cheesy her dramas are. So I'm happy for her. Good luck Go Eun-ssi! Fighting!
