Beans of Wisdom: Comments of the week
by javabeans
girlfriday: New feature! We’re trying something new, because so often we read great comments on Dramabeans and bemoan the death of the thumbs-up button. But that button broke things, and we still want to give good comments their due.
javabeans: Plus, we love that we have a robust commenting community, but that sometimes means a particularly well-formulated thought gets lost in the shuffle.
girlfriday: And whether that’s in-depth dissection of shows, pure unadulterated squeeing over favorite actors, or keen observations, we wanted to share them with everyone.
javabeans: And conversely, remember this? Yeah, nobody else does either. Rather than tell you what not to do, we figured it would be more fun to highlight the ones we find insightful, interesting, or just plain funny.
girlfriday: Hence Beans of Wisdom, a collection of comments from the Beanut Gallery (that’d be you guys) throughout the past week that made us laugh, or made us think twice about something in dramaland.
javabeans: If you think we’ve missed some comments worthy of being featured, let us know — or better yet, write more of them! If we get enough of them, we hope to make this a regular fixture at Dramabeans. Do us proud!
For instance, it always warms our hearts to hear comments like #33 from Sam in “Page Turner: Episode 1”:
Just when I was having a hard time..This drama’s Episode lifted my spirits up. I don’t know but what I like about dramas is that they can accidentally change your mood and give you courage during times you need them the most..I find this episode very comforting 🙂
Wise Bean Ree said in Comment #40 in “Come Back, Ajusshi: Episode 1”:
I don’t know about you guys, but this drama made me appreciate our parents even more. Their sweat and blood, they’re so precious to be wasted. We have to remind ourselves that they are indeed, a hero
mary, Wise Bean and our resident head cheerleader for Song Jae-rim, suggested this casting in Comment #18 from the post “Confirmed: Park Hae-jin returns to dramaland for Man to Man”:
Someone said last time that Ma Dong-seok isn’t available to be PHJ’s costar so I’m gonna vote for Song Jae-rim.
“Man to Man is about a bodyguard (Park Hae-jin) who is tasked to protect a top star (Song Jae-rim) when a crazy fan (who?) starts sending creepy applebutt pictures to the star’s apartment.”
Wise Bean Alex said in Comment #5.1.1 in the post “Master: God of Noodles goes comic book style for first teaser”:
“My revenge will be… making the PERFECT NOODLE.”
Val said in Comment #10.1 in “Descended From the Sun to air three special broadcasts”:
I respect your opinion that you do not like the drama. It is not what I would consider a masterpiece but I do enjoy the cinematography and writing. Some of the titles you named are definitely masterpieces that I agree with and love as well. Bubblegum for example had great cinematography, actors/actresses as well as script.
With that said, opinions are subjective and everyone has different standards of what makes a masterpiece. It is only fair that you respect others by not making comments like this where you single out the gender of those who commented on the videos. How do you know that those commenting are not guys? The “girly” nickname was a give away or the gushing over Song Jong Ki? There is no need to point out specifically the “girls” who call this drama a masterpiece; there is no need to point out the gender to get your point across unless you are being misogynistic and implying that only girls would like this show and for reasons you deem unsuitable. “Commentators on video” work just as well if you are simply making a point.
Let’s just be a little more sensitive about the words we use.
In the same post, Yukie said (at Comment #9.7):
Loving a crack drama and recognizing what it is doesn’t hinder my enjoyment of it. As a matter of fact me and my group of girlfriends who loved it all agree that we turn off our brain while watching. It is a fluff-romance-human drama that simply meant to make u feel good and enjoy the awesome cinematography. What on earth is so wrong about that type of drama?
Solarmoonmoo in Comment #16 in “Descended From the Sun: Episode 11”:
Wait a second. What if Argus isn’t the “bad guy.” What if, and I am going on a limb here, the actual bad guy is our inner turmoil and emotions? Man vs. self. Maybe Argus is just a red herring? I don’t know. I can’t watch episode 12 until tomorrow afternoon so I could be wrong by then. But what if?
Comment #5 from “Oh Snap! Taecyeon has great eyebrows,” from Wise Bean alpha:
Very out of the topic thought, but I always wonder how celebrities feel when their fame is no longer as it used to be. I watched in dramas (YWCFTS, Come back Mister), where in drama sets, the less popular actors are ignored and not given star treatment.
I wonder how it feels to drop to bottom after being on top. I wonder how Bigbang will feel once they are no longer chart-toppers, how will Kim Soo Hyun feel once he will no longer get lead roles and will have to do side characters.
Does it affect them mentally, since they might feel they are not worth as much?
Just having these late night thoughts. And seeing this picture just made me think back to 2PM peak days and current.
CR had a few burning questions about how an entire political plot in Jackpot hinged on one three-second interaction between a water maid and a king in Comment #15 of “Jackpot: Episode 1”:
I kept trying to handwave the Complex But Surefire King Seduction Method, but can’t help but come back to it all “whaaat. how did that work? It was half Pick-Up Artist, half maybe magic? Did Master Manipulator Dude somehow hypnotize the king? “When you see a leaf covering shoes and she meets your gaze for three breaths, you will fall in love. Also, you will cluck like a chicken during eclipses. For funsies.”
And in the same post, nAEE noted in Comment #21:
Thanks for the recap! Gosh, am I the only one who think “It’s recap party in dramabeans!!!” ^^
Why yes, it’s been quite the recap-apalooza lately, thanks for noticing!

Yes more work! Thanks JB and team and thanks for taking on more workload and acknowledging this commenting community.
It's a brilliant idea... not only will comments (hopefully) be even better thought out and written, but they may be somewhat more 'self-censored'? :D

Well, they are looking for more beanies so some of the work will presumably be delegated.
The New York Times has this feature also. I don't think anyone there writes their comments thinking "Will I make it into "Comments Highlights" section" because ultimately people are either passionate about the topic they are commenting on or not.
And if people do get conscious about it, maybe it'll reduce the comments that are just "He's so hooooooot" (which are fine, but if every recapped episode has a string of those comments it gets pretty boring. Though not that I care – I know how the scrolling on my mousepad works after all).

The odd thing about that Jackpot seduction technique for me was that I didn't even question it. My brain just immediately filed it away as "nonsense that you must accept to get to Yeo Jin Goo."
I like this idea. I don't comment often, and I don't read many comments because they're sometimes overwhelming in number. But I'll definitely read future posts like this!

Woah, it's a nice new feature where I could find the very insightful thoughts from fellow fans. Buth I'm kinda missing the Spill The Beans feature, it's been weeks since I read the last one, it's still on right? Hmm, kinda procrastinating whether to send my (me and my sister's, actually) story so I hope that when I'm done debating with myself, I could still do so... And yeah, thank you for being one great platform for fellow addicts(?) to enjoy the drama experience more...

2. Val, I don't know who you are but I love you.
3. Yukie, I absolutely agree. We need fluff dramas in our life.

I am a fresh, recently hatched beanie. But even though I'm an infant, time-wise, I still cannot stop reading dramabeans and part of the reason is, why, comments! Some people have such wonderful insight I usually check dozens of those if I have the time. I can learn so much from those and observe some interesting dioscussions and perspectives on characters. This is absolutely awesome idea and I love it.

Mary : " 3. Might sound too much like a fan girl if a drama has one of my favourite Oppas.
Good thinking. Can you imagine me writing a Goodbye Mr Black recap?
—
In this episode, Woojin, looking dashing in a striped shirt, looks at Swan with a cheeky smile. His smile is like the sun. (Warning: you need sunglasses to watch this episode.)
Swan tells him “You’re just my newswriting sunbae”. Woojin starts crying. I want to reach into the screen and tell him I’m here. I love eggs. And I love fast men too. Better if they are secret chaebols with an evil dad.
(Meanwhile Black shows up and steals money from some folks and scares Sunjae into making stupid decisions.)
Back to Woojin, who’s typing intently on his laptop. Is it a love letter for me? Probably not. But a girl can hope, right? Maybe if I cut my hair really short too? "
This has got to be my fav comment this week xD

Also, I remember reading Alpha's fame comment and going 'wow, that's good.' Thanks for giving it some public recognition! Go Alpha! I've thought about celebrities and famous people before, and what it would be like to be them, and I've since determined I do not ever want to be in a movie. Too stressful--and I would die if my image got picked apart by haters.

I remember reading Alpha's comment too (in fact, it was indeed one of the very, very few comments that stopped me in place and made me ponder for a while).
Now that I'm reading it again, I am recalling an interview with Ahn Sung-ki that I did with a group of Korean film bloggers in London. Someone asked about how he chose his roles, and part of his answer related to becoming an "older" actor who doesn't get lead roles anymore (the last bit is especially insightful):
"One good thing about being an actor is that obviously there is the premise that you have to do well and you must continue to appeal but there are roles and characters that you can play even as you get older. I have singer friends who have produced hit songs but as they become older it’s not as easy to produce big hits and lifelong they’ll be repeating the hits they had when they were younger. In my opinion, I wish they’d try something new or do something different but it feels they are unable to. As an actor, as you get older and get more wrinkles there are more roles that those wrinkles can speak to. There aren’t any specific roles that I’m attracted to but thinking about the cathartic effect that a film has is what attracts me ultimately. If I can move people’s hearts and touch them in some way, those are the roles I want to take. As you get older, the roles in films and the parts you play may get smaller but the most important thing is that my presence and my skill is not reduced. So, rather that concentrate on size, you focus on constantly having depth in roles and thinking is something I will contemplate in the future continually. By having continued depth I’ll still be able to move the hearts and minds of people."
The whole interview, for those who are interested:

Spoken like a true artist. :') He doesn't just say "I love my craft", it actually shows how much and how deeply he thought about how to improve himself.
Alpha's comment stayed with me too, I remember feeling a bit sad and speechless (typeless?) after reading it. It brings to mind lots of other actors/actresses we used to like and see a lot in the past but are nowhere or just in bit roles now.

Alpha's comment made me reflect a lot, too. It made me think actually of the Wonder Girls, probably one of two girl groups who could've really given SNSD a run for their money and remained majorly popular until now, if not for the wrong gamble that JYP made in sending them to the US. (The other group would be 2NE1.) While not as big as they were from 2009-'13, SNSD still lords over the other girl groups until now. Sad to think that the Wonder Girls could've been in the same level of popularity, too.

I've always wondered if there is a search function that JB and GF could use to search out specific commentors. Like for instance if they posted some juicy news about Song Jae Rim, and the next day were like, "Ok let's see what mary has to say about *this*."
In conjunction, I've wondered (if there were such a device) if they have favorite commentors that they seek out.
This is idea is a way to peek into what is striking to our Head Beans, which is an awesome new dimension to the insight they already share and my favorite thing about this site.
Man the pressure is ON! Now I retreat to the safety of the Lurk Caverns.

I used to read all the articles and even comments since most of them are interesting and insightful. I even learn more vocabularies from here (English isn't my first language).
However it's a pity that with the increasing popularity of this site and more visitors, we often see more fanwars, trolls, hate comments....
