Signal: Episode 16 (Final)
by gummimochi
Be still, my beating heart. From an intense opening to this heart-stopping conclusion, Signal shows us that it can utilize every available minute at its disposal to deliver the best it has to offer. Despite the familiar moments that may seem like we’re right back where we’ve started, there are hidden clues that suggest that the end is, in fact, only the beginning.
A solid drama like Signal is hard to come by in any year, which is what makes it so very special. We’ll never know a cleverer detective than Jae-han, a badass team leader like Soo-hyun, and an astute yet flawed profiler like Hae-young, who have captured our hearts and all share a connection that goes beyond the radio waves.

FINAL EPISODE RECAP
August 3, 2000. Nearly all of today’s events look familiar: Jae-han bumps into young Hae-young at the precinct, argues with Director Kim after the case briefing, and tells Section Chief Ahn to stop acting like an obedient slave.
Speaking of which, Director Kim tasks Section Chief Ahn with tailing Jae-han since he has solid proof to expose Senator Jang’s nephew (and by extension, himself). Given the test results he saw, Director Kim surmises Jae-han got a hold of the red scarf.
Warning Section Chief Ahn of the ramifications if the truth comes to light, Director Kim orders him to use any means necessary to retrieve that scarf.
While Hae-young tells Soo-hyun that the transmissions always come at 11:23 PM, Jae-han is alone when Soo-hyun arrives at the precinct. He assures her that they’ll talk soon once everything is over. Wait a minute, that sounds different.
This time we see Section Chief Ahn trail behind Jae-han’s car when he leaves for Seonil Psychiatric. In the present, Soo-hyun calls for an ambulance while she and Hae-young wait in anticipation for the walkie-talkie to light up.
Jae-han speaks into his walkie-talkie when it comes alive… but nothing happens on Hae-young’s end. Oh no. Confused, Jae-han asks if he’s speaking with Soo-hyun, then drops to banmal to explain how Suspect Seo’s body is in a manhole behind the psychiatric hospital.
It’s Hae-young in 2015 who finally picks up, bringing us to the moment when the transmissions first started for him. Jae-han barely says his name before getting bludgeoned over the head. Oh my god, I don’t know if I can go through this again.
We catch up to the last moments of the previous episode as Hae-young stops breathing just as the ambulance arrives. Over in the past, Section Chief Ahn shakes Jae-han awake and tells him to give up the red scarf.
He’s shocked to learn that the scarf can also prove that Director Kim murdered Sun-woo, since he was under the belief that Sun-woo committed suicide. When Director Kim and Kim Sung-bum arrive, Section Chief Ahn asks if it’s true.
Director Kim bends down and confronts Jae-han about the test results. While he talks, Jae-han covertly grabs a shard of glass from behind him and tells Director Kim that things doesn’t always go his way in this world.
After conversing with Soo-hyun through the radio, Jae-han told himself that the future can still change. He concluded that Director Kim had taken the scarf and wouldn’t be the type to discard it so carelessly. Since the director must’ve been in a hurry, he ruled out Inju or the precinct as possible hiding spots.
However, Jae-han recalled a small but crucial detail: he’d burst in on Director Kim tending to his own cut finger… with a bandage he bought at a pharmacy in a rest stop. He figured Director Kim would dispose of the scarf and checked the trash bins there, but was told the trash has already been picked up.
Jae-han then went to the landfill and rifled through the bags, and saw poor elderly woman wearing the red scarf. He thought of taking it to the NFS building, but then judged it wasn’t safe when he saw a fellow cop there.
So Jae-han sent the scarf to a forensics center in the States, and used a dictionary to arduously translate the lab results that were sent to him via email. Ah, so there’s a failsafe—an electronic copy exists.
Basically, the forensics lab was able to confirm that the scarf belonged to Hye-seung, but they found another man’s blood on the scarf and required another reference sample. Remembering Director Kim’s cut, Jae-han made up an excuse to gain entry into Director Kim’s office so he could swipe a used cigarette butt.
Once the forensics report came back as a match, Jae-han arranged a meeting with the prosecutor. We see just how Director Kim killed Sun-woo after he fell unconscious: Director Kim had slit Sun-woo’s wrist and wiped off his own fingerprints from the blade. When he’d tried to place the blade into Sun-woo’s hand, Sun-woo had an involuntary spasm and he sustained a cut.
His finger was still exposed when he’d handled the red scarf, and good lord—Sun-woo is still breathing while he bleeds out.
Director Kim chuckles when he sees the look of surprise on Jae-han’s face at the mention of the prosecutor. He offers Jae-han one last chance to give up. Jae-han refuses, knowing full well that Director Kim won’t let him walk out of here alive.
Jae-han encourages Director Kim to do whatever he wants, so the latter tosses the test results into the flames. While Section Chief Ahn protests against killing one of their own, Jae-han keeps cutting at his restraints until he finally breaks free.
Jae-han gets stabbed and manages to escape, thanks to Section Chief Ahn holding Kim Sung-bum back. Furious, Director Kim issues an ultimatum—either they spend their lives in prison if Jae-han lives to tell the tale or save his sick daughter by doing away with Jae-han now. He hollers: “Choose!”
So Section Chief Ahn runs after Jae-han, and Director Kim reminds Kim Sung-bum to let Section Chief Ahn murder Jae-han.
Meanwhile in the present, Hae-young struggles in the ambulance, but he’s conscious. He sees a slight breeze pass through Soo-hyun’s hair and realizes that something has changed. “It’s changed…” he ekes out. “The transmission has changed.”
He remembers that in their first transmission, Jae-han had said he was the one who warned him about not going to the psychiatric hospital. But this time, it was Soo-hyun, which means there’s a chance that the past has changed.
He asks if anything has changed in Soo-hyun’s memory about her last conversation with Jae-han on August 3, 2000. She realizes that her mind now houses a different memory, one where Jae-han had reassured her that they’d talk soon and he would return.
“The past… has already changed,” Hae-young breathes, then gasps for air again.
As Jae-han slips in the woods, he thinks of how everything will go cold if he dies here—the Inju case, Sun-woo’s death… and Soo-hyun. Recalling Soo-hyun’s cries of how long she waited, he’s determined to keep his promise and return alive.
Meanwhile Hae-young is wheeled into the ER, and we hear his voice thinking of Jae-han: “11:23 PM. The time you died, Detective. Rather than being afraid of death, the possibility of those cases remaining unsolved troubled you more, didn’t it? Did you send me those transmissions from that desperate heart?”
Since CPR doesn’t work, the doctors use a defibrillator on Hae-young, who keeps thinking: “Detective… please use that determination to live. Not the transmissions, but your own will to live.”
Jae-han tumbles down the hill and hides the walkie-talkie before Section Chief Ahn approaches with a gun in his hand. A shot rings out… and Hae-young flatlines in the present. His final thought: “Don’t give up.”
Some time later we see Soo-hyun sitting in a car by a lighthouse, and she takes out the photo of her and Jae-han tucked behind the Batman photo.
We flash back to the moment to the sound of a gunshot… but the bullet lands in Section Chief Ahn’s shoulder. They’re soon surrounded by police—who were called in by Jae-han—and both Section Chief and Kim Sung-bum are apprehended. While the cops help Jae-han up, he barks at them to nab Director Kim, who is now long gone.
Instead of heading to the hospital, Jae-han insists that he needs to stop somewhere first. That somewhere is Soo-hyun’s house, and when she comes running out looking thoroughly upset by his injuries, Jae-han pulls her into a tight embrace. Aw, and ha—the other guys awkwardly turn away to give them some privacy.
“I… I kept my promise,” he tells her. He holds her tight, and Soo-hyun sinks into the hug. Hm, but a tear rolls down Soo-hyun’s face in the present. Don’t tell me something else happened in the interim.
We then segue to Hae-young, who gasps awake in his room and immediately checks for any injuries. Is this a different present than the one we see Soo-hyun in? I’m so confused now. What’s even more mind-boggling is that there’s a loving note from his mother… because his parents are together again in this present.
The pictures hanging on this wall show the three of them as a happy family at his high school and police university graduations.
With Jae-han surviving the attack on his life, Hae-young’s memories have now changed: Nurse Yoon is arrested for the Kim Yoon-jung case, and Jae-han reveals to Hae-young and his parents that Sun-woo was innocent and wrongly murdered.
He apologizes for not uncovering the truth sooner, though he chokes up at the words. Sun-woo simply wanted his family to be together again, and everyone in the room is overcome with emotion at hearing the truth. As Jae-han looks at little Hae-young, another tear falls from his eyes.
Hae-young follows him out to thank Jae-han over and over again. Jae-han’s words get caught in his throat, then he walks away.
“Lee Jae-han… he survived,” Hae-young says in awe in the present. He runs over to the watch repair shop and asks to see Jae-han. But he’s told that Jae-han has been missing for over fifteen years now. Oh crap.
Hae-young bursts into the precinct in Seoul, where the mountain of paperwork that used to sit on top of the cold case squad’s corner is still there and no one there recognizes him. So he heads to the precinct in Jinyang, hoping to find Soo-hyun there.
She isn’t in, and neither Detective Kim nor Heon-ki recognize him either. They don’t know where she is, and it must be some weird kind of nostalgia for Hae-young to see these two bickering.
Finally Hae-young heads to his tiny precinct and asks where the walkie-talkie without the batteries went. He’s told that Hae-young never had anything of the sort.
We transition to the past as Soo-hyun waits alone at a restaurant. It’s her first date with Jae-han, and her sister had insisted that she spray on perfume to impress her date. So she spray some on just before Jae-han arrives, only to be called outside again.
They eat the pig skin restaurant in Inju instead, and Jae-han sniffs the air and asks what that weird smell is. HAHAHA. The ajumma there explains that she hasn’t seen the kid eat here in some time because he’s living with his parents now. Jae-han already knows that, and he smiles.
The past and present blend together when Hae-young heads to that same restaurant. Jae-han doesn’t explain who the little kid is, and Soo-hyun asks if he’s still looking for Director Kim.
She tells him that he should hand off the case to someone else, but Jae-han clarifies that he’s out to fry bigger fish than Director Kim—he’s looking for the one who’s been pulling the strings in all of these crimes, and that’s who truly deserves to be punishment: “One must correct the actual wrong in order to change the past, and to be able to change the future.”
That night was the last time the restaurant ajumma saw Jae-han, and Hae-young wonders what could’ve happened.
Jae-han drives out to an abandoned building in the countryside. His phone signal to Soo-hyun is weak, and makes sure to take precaution upon entering. He keeps a watchful eye out as he heads deeper inside, then Director Kim pounces on him.
Director Kim kicks him away, but Jae-han drives him into a pile of wood and punches him. “You think the world will change if you catch me?” Director Kim spits tauntingly. Jae-han replies, “No. I need to a catch a different bastard in order for the world to change.”
He asks if Senator Jang is responsible in puppeteering this elaborate cover-up, and Director Kim doesn’t deny it. Corruption was how the senator rose to power and that’s just how the world works, he barks.
That’s the very problem with it all, Jae-han spits back as he grabs Director Kim by the front. Senator Jang will continue to use his influence to cover up a crime, spend money to pay people off, and tinker with crimes—and Jae-han swears to stop the injustice himself.
“He’s someone that you, the police, the prosecution… even the Blue House can’t stop,” Director Kim chuckles. He finds it absurd that one man would even dream of taking someone like Senator Jang on. Jae-han knows that Director Kim erased the files related to the corruption scandal on the floppy disk, but there must be a copy because Director Kim would want some sort of insurance on his part.
Before he can get an answer, a throng of suits rush in to attack Director Kim. He and Director Kim try to fight them off, but Director Kim is soon brought down and beaten with sticks and pipes.
Seeing the duffel bag Director Kim was carrying, Jae-han keeps fighting his way through. That day is November 20, 2000 as Hae-young reads about the case in his New Present.
Director Kim’s body was found in the building and traces of Jae-han’s blood and DNA were found at the scene. Jae-han became a suspect in the case and his whereabouts have been unknown since that day. His car was later found abandoned alongside a highway.
Hae-young doesn’t believe that Jae-han would’ve murdered Director Kim—someone else must’ve framed him for his murder. But who?
Jae-han jumps out of the window with the duffel bag in hand, climbs into his car and escapes. Meanwhile, Soo-hyun and her fellow cops are out looking for him in the city.
Later that night, a bloodied Jae-han sits in his car holding his radio, waiting for it to flicker on. “If only I had the walkie-talkie…” Hae-young thinks to himself.
As the throng of suits pull up to his car, Jae-han grabs his casebook and quickly jots something down before the suits start attacking his car. Just then, Hae-young remembers seeing Jae-han’s old casebook on Soo-hyun’s desk and realizes that there’s still a way to communicate even without the radio.
Hae-young doubles back to the Jinyang precinct and quietly pockets Jae-han’s casebook. Once he’s safe in the car, he flips to the back of the journal to the memo that lists the cases they worked on together.
Jae-han would’ve anticipated that Hae-young would see this in the future—a note only Hae-young would understand. It’s a number: 32-6.
It’s his old house in Inju, and thankfully his mother is at home. She’s surprised when he asks if the detective that helped them years ago left something in her care, then gives him the envelope asked her to keep safe for him.
She kept it all these years, believing that he’d return one day to collect it. Inside is a letter addressed to him… and a floppy disk. Whatttttttt.
Jae-han writes of how he hopes Hae-young will read this one day since this is the last way he can get it in touch with him. He remembers how Hae-young had no idea who he was back in August 3, 2000—perhaps that’s when he realizes that they could’ve been caught in a time loop. But he hasn’t once received a transmission ever since he survived that night.
He’d hoped that their transmission would continue, and wondered if him surviving is what ended their connection to one another. The day Hae-young thanked him for solving his brother’s murder, it made him think about if the ones truly responsible never pay for their crimes, that something terrible may happen again in the future.
He has enclosed the floppy disk that would expose the Jinyang corruption case. He explains that he couldn’t think of anyone to give it to in his generation out of fear that it would put lives at risk or the evidence would disappear again.
“But the world you live in must be different,” Jae-han continues. We see the corruption case is now covered by the media and an older Senator Jang is swarmed by reporters. The news reports remark on how this scandal could cripple the society, and Senator Jang brusquely orders to do whatever must be done.
At the very least, Jae-han hopes that Hae-young now lives in a world where evil men pay for their crimes. “You, who are in the future, are my last hope. I believe that this letter will be my farewell. I pray that you will take care, be healthy, and be happy.”
Hae-young tracks down the postmark on the mailing envelope to a coastal town. He also follows up with the precinct about any missing persons in the past fifteen years, and is relieved to find that Jae-han’s name doesn’t appear in any of the reports.
He does, however, happen to see Soo-hyun, who still carries around Jae-han’s photo, hoping that someone will recognize him. She pauses when she turns around to see him, and Hae-young asks if she remembers him.
All he knows is that he woke up and the cold case squad was gone and no one recognized him. He couldn’t find her at her old precinct and kept looking for her. Soo-hyun cuts him off, replying in banmal that he probably couldn’t find her number saved in his contacts list.
They sit down to chat, as Soo-hyun explains she went through a similar bizarre experience: She came to and tried looking for Hae-young at the ER, but there was no record of him. She even swung by his place, and was relieved to hear from this mother that he was sick, but alive.
“What about Lee Jae-han?” Hae-young asks. Soo-hyun takes a deep breath before answering that she remembers everything: she had woken up in her car, dazed and confused. She remembered hearing Jae-han making a demand from her, but in this changed present, that never happened.
Jae-han is still missing in this present, and she’s been looking for him ever since he’s gone missing. Her mind remembers that something else has changed as well: she received a phone call at the precinct sooner after Jae-han had gone missing.
She picked up, but there was silence on the other end, which made her think that it was Jae-han. “It’s you, sunbae-nim, isn’t it?” She called out to him several more times, but then the line went dead.
She tried tracing the number that called, and that led her out to a public phone booth in the coastal town. “He didn’t say anything, but it was definitely him,” Soo-hyun recalls, then corrects herself. “No… I thought that it would’ve been him.”
Hae-young asks if she received that call on November 24, 2000 because that’s the same day Jae-han sent him a letter. Since the postal records were erased a year later, he’s unable to confirm that it was him, but he believes it was Jae-han.
Jae-han must’ve known that his life was in danger, so he sent him this letter, Hae-young concludes. He wishes that Jae-han is alive too, but Jae-han isn’t the type to go off the grid for fifteen years, either. It breaks his heart to admit that if Jae-han were alive, he would’ve tried to make contact already.
Soo-hyun entertains the possibility that Jae-han had no choice but to remain in hiding all these years—if there no proof that he’s dead, he could still be alive. The facility name on the envelope strikes familiar with her, and she shows Hae-young an anonymous text she received not too long ago warning her not to go there on February 5.
Jae-han, Hae-young, and herself were the only three people who knew about the walkie-talkie’s existence. Furthermore, small nursing facilities don’t require an identification check to admit patients, so one could theoretically stay there hidden for years.
But Hae-young says it would’ve been impossible for Jae-han to finance his stay there for all these years when he was considered a suspect. Unless someone was helping him, that is.
It’s at that moment Hae-young realizes that someone may have helped Jaehan: his father. He had seen the half-charred remains of a ticket from Gangwon-do to Seoul when he went to see Jae-han’s father.
As Hae-young and Soo-hyun travel to the medical facility in her car, he narrates: “This never made any sense from the beginning… from the moment the transmission began from a walkie-talkie without any batteries in it. So there’s no reason to be disappointed already.”
Unfortunately another group of suits is on their way as they rush inside the building. Damn, are these Senator Jang’s men? In one of the rooms, someone pulls themselves up from the bed. Jae-han, is that you?
“I don’t know what will be at the end of this road,” Hae-young thinks to himself. “Whether I’ll meet my closest friend whom I’ve never met before… Or if a dangerous fate may await us.”
“There’s nothing I can do,” he finishes as we cut back to Hae-young and Soo-hyun’s conversation again. He says that if Jae-han truly did send this text, then it’s dangerous for them to go to that medical facility.
Jae-han held on to the radio, and while their connection to him may have ended, it’s possible he began another one with someone else from the future who warned him about this date, February 5, 2016.
But Soo-hyun counters that Jae-han went to Seonil Psychiatric on August 3, 2000 even though they warned him not to go. It’s possible that Jae-han sent them this message in anticipation that they too would do the same.
Well if they’re going they better hurry because Senator Jang’s men are already inside the building. The one thing Hae-young knows for certain is that the transmissions began because of one man’s determination. “That voice over the radio taught me one thing: all you have to do is never give up.”
He breaks into a sad smile at the thought of Jae-han’s zealous words, and Soo-hyun smiles too. “As long as one doesn’t give up… even toppling a corrupt power that seemed so insurmountable and meeting someone you’ve wandered in search for sixteen years… are all possible. As long as one doesn’t give up, there’s hope.”
In that hospital room, a man looks out the window. The walkie-talkie on the windowsill has a yellow smiley face sticker on it… and it flickers on. The man slowly turns his face…
… it’s Jae-han.
COMMENTS
Just take a look at that badass glory shot. Go ahead and drink it in… I’ll wait. It’s these moments where I feel so lucky that we have such a skilled actor like Jo Jin-woong in this role of Jae-han. While Jo doesn’t possess the flower boy handsome look of other actors, he has a magnetism and brings a stage presence that both commands my attention and draws me in as a viewer. Although Jo is an actor best known for his supporting roles in movies and other dramas (Full Sun,Tree With Deep Roots), there’s no doubt that Jae-han is the true hero in Signal.
I don’t think there are enough words to fully describe my admiration for Jo as Jae-han, a character who has made me laugh at his adorably awkwardness around women he likes, cry in his darkest moments, and my heart flutter at the very sound of his voice. My mind is filled with questions at this finale, like how he managed to escape the clutches of Senator Jang’s men to go into hiding for the past fifteen years. In the end, I’m relieved that he’s still alive because I feared that something terrible must’ve happened to him and we would once again find him a corpse.
I was worried that it might’ve been too late for Soo-hyun and Hae-young to prevent the seemingly inevitable that is (was?) Jae-han’s death. But once again, there were so many instances in these final 88 minutes where the tiniest of changes propelled Jae-han into action and even plan ahead days, weeks, or even years ahead. And sometimes his most clever decisions came at the most crucial life or death moments. We’re left to wonder who it is that Jae-han is connected to now and how that person found the walkie-talkie, but whoever it is, their lives are about to be changed.
On a production front, Signal never let us down from start to finish. Handling a story centered around a time paradox is a complicated task, to say the least, but this show went above and beyond in presenting an overarching mystery that also tied into various cases of the week and took into minute details that one could easily miss. A story of this scale would need to think of all the possible alternative realities depending on the consequences of our character’s decisions (or sometimes, even in spite of that). To that end, the narrative was solid and well-built, and I always felt assured that there must be an answer to my question, even if we as viewers weren’t privy to it yet. Sure that made for maddening moments in the recaps trying to describe two concurrent timelines on paper vs. what we saw onscreen, but that didn’t take away my appreciation for Signal’s ability to keep us on our toes from start to finish.
Of course, Jo Jin-woong isn’t the only acting powerhouse in this series. Signal has also blessed us with the talents of Kim Hye-soo, who took on this project as her return to dramaland (since God of the Workplace in 2013) and Lee Je-hoon, who simply never disappoints. The show also boasts an impressive supporting cast with Kim Won-hae as Detective Kim, and guest stars like Sohn Hyun-joo as Senator Jang. As for PD Kim Won-seok, I wouldn’t have expected anything less in terms of the stellar quality we were given in Signal, and I can’t wait for what his next project may be.
As previously posted, PD Kim Won-seok and writer Kim Eun-hee are giving serious consideration for a second season. Although you’ll usually find me in the camp of not encouraging a sequel for most series (’cause why tinker with something that ain’t broke?) I can also see how a second season could tie into this story. This kind of open ending where the transmissions do continue allows the possibility for Jae-han to continue to fight injustice and affect more lives in the future. For myself, it would have to be Jo Jin-woong as Jae-han because I can’t imagine anyone else in this role of a bold, badass, and in-your-face detective that can take a serious beating over and over again. Realistically, it would be difficult to gather this talented cast back together again, but if there’s anything that this drama has taught me, it’s that there’s hope as long as I don’t give up.

SIGNAL is the Drama of My Life!
It is a solid WALL and it may take years for another to beat it.
Thank you for the most remarkable viewing experience I’ve ever had.
This is the greatest heart-stopping ride in all the dramas after more than a decade of watching and I’m very proud to say that it is my number 1!
Right after finishing the last episode, I was near tears but with a sense of satisfaction. The whole team worked so hard to be able to bring this masterpiece to life and I’m grateful as a viewer for the whole 8-week unforgettable and momentous journey.
Signal is the most consistent drama I’ve ever watched. The attention to detail is astonishing. Before this drama started, I was questioning why they had done Lee Jae Han’s solo character poster shoot at the seaside and I was blown away seeing the location’s connection to the last episode! How cool was that! The writer-director duo obviously had done this drama in a very careful and brilliant way.
All the three leads took turns in dying and getting back alive. I love that this is the only drama I’ve watched where you can really kill the main leads halfway and then bring them back to life after some time.
As a viewer, knowing all the timelines (even those that collapsed) made me feel that sense of connection to the leads. That we too, are part of all those transmissions and although many characters have already forgotten all that has happened, we are here to remember the breathtaking journey this drama had.
For the job well done, Kim Hye Soo, Joo Jin Woong, Lee Jae Han, PD Kim Won Suk, and of course, to writernim Kim Eun Hee, THANK YOU!
Chijik.. Chijik…Everyone. I think this is going to be my last comment. But this isn’t the end. The drama will start again. When that time comes, you have to persuade the writernim. Kim Eun Hee of 2016. Season 2 – it can start. Don’t ever give up.

+1000 like! Awesome comment! Thank you Gummimochi for great recap! I will surely miss this show. I'm really hoping for Season 2 pretty soon...same casts & crew...same great show, if not maybe better...I don't even care if they still make my head hurt for thinking on how things happened or going to happen LOL
So many questions:
- what happened to the other walkie-talkie? is it because Jae-Han was now alive in the present so he has it with him?
- so who's in the past now? still Jae-han? or is Jae-han trying to save Soo-hyun and Hae-young from dying, which is why the message transmission was made via Soo-Hyun's cell phone?
- was that hospital scene in the present timeline or future?
Oh wow! ok gotta stop now before I go crazy! LOL...

Yes..from the beginning there was only one talkie walkie .. because Jaehan die, then Haeyoung could have the talkie walkie. however, in the new timeline, Jaehan is alive, and therefore it stays with him
And for the rest question... I'm with you... still confused haha

"– what happened to the other walkie-talkie? is it because Jae-Han was now alive in the present so he has it with him?"
There IS no other walkie-talkie. There's only ever been one all along...since JH has it now, there's no way for HY to have it. Which means that FUTURE (HY?) who has it only has it because it has somehow fallen out of JH's possession.
My guess about who he's talking to on the radio now is...a more-future Hae-young. It can't be anyone else, for poetic reasons.

- yea he held onto it when he survived so it didn't end up on the back of the truck where HY found it in the current timeline. (as what the others said)
- they are all in the present. JH survived through the 15 years between the two timelines so they are all in the present. By cell shows they are in the same timeline, since cells can't work across time. As to why he knows that date and time he warns about, that's a mystery. Probably someone in a time different from the 3 of them told him through the walkie-talkie.
- I would say its the current timeline.

No lie, I have been refreshing the whole day for this. Anyways, here are my thoughts:
Tthis drama has been awesome from beginning to end. I personally saw no flaw and this is definitely one of my favorite dramas. This is one of the one dramas I’ve watched without a romance being the main problem, but this drama didn’t need that. The flow of the plot was amazing, how we discovered bits and bits at the times we needed. Also love how they tied everything together, it was really thought out, beginning and end. Every little detail was so important and made the drama that much stronger. Like i said before, even PHY mentioning he liked omurice for lunch in the beginning had a significance. It was shot beautifully (Other than those bill paying PPL scenes), and the filter/tone/colour of the drama really fit the theme and the tone of the drama. The music was so fitting and no annoying/catchy pop music (Looking at you DOTS), and it kinda fit the vintage tone of the drama. I love the deep voices and the strong instrumentals in each and every song.
Character development too tho. Like you see the noob LJH grow to this kickass detective who will call you out when needed. He ain’t got no boundaries and will fight for what is right. He went through so many events in his life (Like death of loved ones, being shut down again and again by the higher ups, and betrayal after betrayal, even from his best friend, BTW i loved how his bestie came back in the end as a cop to save him), but he still keeps going and is such an upbeat character. PHY grew from thinking he was alone in this world , a cocky detective that hates cops to a compassionate detective with friends (Cold team squad for life) who understands the meaning of never giving up. He also found out that not everyone is bad and that he can trust people. CSH yo was such a badass too. She went from this shy person to an awesome dectective that WILL stand for what she believes in no matter what. She didn’t really change in the present compared to PHY in the present and LJH in the past, but she’s like this rock that the two guys depend on and the glue that ties the other two together. She ain’t a weepy female character who needs a man. She may be in love with one, but she can still be a kickass character.
Acting was top notch. I didn’t even mind PHY’s acting in the beginning even though people were complaining about it (and changed my mind about him, like I said before, hated him with a passion in Fashion King). I thought it was fine. From the lead characters, to the villians, and to the minor characters, each one was perfectly cast. This drama made me cry so much, mainly because I could feel the angst each character was feeling, even PHY eating omurice as a kid made me cry, it was that intense.
I couldn’t really imagine an ending that was fit for this drama. You obviously don’t want an ultra tragic ending given all that they worked for. But, you also don’t want a ending with all loose ends tied neatly in...

Cut off :0
But, you also don’t want a ending with all loose ends tied neatly in a bow, that would be unlike the tone of the show. It’s not as simple as putting all the bad guys in jail without any consequences, it’s unrealistic. So hands down for the writer for that open ending, it made sense, was satisfying, and first time I liked such an open ending.
And season 2? I’m down if the main cast is back, it’s pre-produced, same PD and writer, and there’s a good enough and long enough story (For 16 eps).
Other than that, don’t ruin this awesome show, it was fine where it ended.

This that I don't mind an open ending....all wanted was jae han alive and we know that man can never stop till justice is served / no to mention the possibility of second season*fingers crossed*
Lee jae han.... has become my all time favourite character..he is common man who is no genius(or vampire) like most mystery leads whose convection of justice is just an extra accessory...... jae han is just a common cop with a strong sense of justice and his smartness comes from the determination to never give up...
in reality where genius/special people don't exist i still get hope that there might be a cop who is half convicted as jae han is....
I love the show and declare the best of 2016..... even though its early..

I also kept hoping that people like lee jae han exist. Also no matter what,'good/honesty/courage/braveness have the power which is overwhelming,it makes you a better person, and ever hopeful.I really really loved the character of lee jae han,and not needs saying,jo jin woong, you made me a fan,for life.

I am SUPER late to join the finale...but finally watched the last four episodes and like YOU said, oh how we all wish and hope in our hearts that people like lee jae han exist. he never faltered in anything. in the beginning i didn't like him but then you watch and see him grow into a strong and determined cop who's also gotten a bit smarter and more know-how and you just can't help but to root for him and the underdogs.

I also love that the writers had Cha Soo Hyun remember Park Hae Young even though the past had changed, so he wouldn't be alone again in the midst of his different surroundings.

But they do, even if it's not in the future/present. I think part of the enthralment of Signal is that there's this thing we all secretly want (so much!) but you're not meant to get it. If they wrap the show entirely (i.e. if Season 2 is the end), I think it would happen though. It's tantalising but also implosive. For now.

I desperately need season 2, where Haeyoung and Sohyun's present become 'the past' and Jaehan make a new time-loop connection with another detective from the future and being super awesome at that.
This drama sets the bar impossibly high and now I don't know what I should do with my severe withdrawal syndrome.. Sigh... You will be missed and remembered fondly, show.

Hmm...but considering how all the cases in this show are based on real ones I wonder if they'll just come up with imaginary ones for a sequel in the future....there must be a reason why the writer-director duo put so much emphasis on never giving up (on those cold cases).

According to one knetz, the 1st Season was about the walkie-talkie transmission between the past and the present and if the 2nd Season comes to fruition, it may be between the present and the future.
Thank you very much for all the recaps to this AMAZING drama gummi! The drama became double the thrill and excitement because of them :)
I'm very happy that Signal was trending worldwide during the Finale because it deserves all the love and support from everyone. A standing ovation and a big round of applause to the whole team!
If ever Season 2 is confirmed, I will watch it no matter how long it takes. I'll just hibernate myself and stay away from dramas for some time. This is how big of an impact Signal has done to me. Until the next transmission!

Signal is just one of those dramas that once it gets your attention, you can't let go. The intensity of the story lines never stopped. I mean there was no break - from beginning to end it was just pure adrenaline & heartbreak. The continuity of the story line that shapes each character is astounding. From Jae Han's avoidance of movie theaters, to Kim Soo Hyun's fear of puppies/dark places, and PHY's favorite food omurice. The writer explained the heartbreaking reasons behind all of them. This was the only show where I happened to love all the lead characters and deeply cared about them.. The writer Kim Eun Hee is just pure genius for putting this story out there. It is not for the weak stomach but you can admire the solid groundwork for a good story. I love how the writing never insults and underestimate the intelligence of an average k-drama viewer.
Season 2 - I want it so bad but only if it's done right and will obviously supersede the brilliance of Season 1 which I think is close to impossible right now. Another plus if all the cast (JJW, KHS, & LJH) and crew are willing to return and reprise their roles.

Now that is an open ending done right. I love that it doesn't give us all the pieces, but just enough to know that all of the overlapping stories have come to a satisfying end, and that Soo-hyun and Hae-young will finally get to meet detective Lee (yay!).
Ending it before their meeting, after all this time, gives me an entirely different way of looking at the show. It's almost like all of the characters will simply continue on in their new reality, one that invovles all three in the same timeline, and what we got as viewers was just a glimpse into the most intense period of their lives. Long after the episode ended, I wondered what that reunion would be like, and how they would all fit into each other's lives in the present. I've never seen any of the main cast in anything before, but to me it felt like they became their characters in a way I don't typically see in kdramas.
In the end, the whole thing kind of felt like a love story between Hae-young, Jae-han, and their desire for justice. When I think about the fact that they've practically never met, and built their entire relationship on trying to right the wrongs of the past and present - via an infrequent radio transmission - it's truly amazing. They have so much love for each other by the end of it all, and you never once ask yourself why they'd be willing to risk everything just so the other could live happily. They just do, and I found that wonderful.
Man, I'm going to miss this show.

Hands down, the best KDRAMA i've ever watched, and I've watched so many.
From the script, to the direction and of course, the awesome cast. It was intense from Episode 1 and never let up. It was never predictable and always nail-biting. I NEED SEASON 2! But only with the same cast. I got a feeling that Hollywood would come a-calling to adapt this into a movie or tv show.
Most importantly, I grew to adore Jo Jin Woong. He's such a fantastic actor that I cried for every tear he shed, every pain he felt, laughed at his awkwardness with his first love, felt every anger and indignation at every injustice he experienced. I've stupefied that he was always in a supporting role. There are so many stellar matured korean actors who are not flower boys; Song Kang Ho, Hwang Jung Min, Choi Min Sik, Ryu Seung Ryong. I'm glad that he has joined this group and hope he starts getting lead roles in movies and dramas.
I'm gonna miss them so much. No other drama will come close to this perfection. I'll always use this drama as a benchmark for future ones. And I think all will fail, unless it's Season 2 with the same cast, same writer and PD. I live in hope.

This drama... it is MY honour to have watched it. Seriously.
I've said it before but I'll say it again: I loved how the people in this drama are portrayed as people - not unfeeling geniuses or completely reckless and stupid supposed-to-be-best-in-the-business-my-foot fools. They're like real people who think but are sometimes waylaid by overflowing passion and the real focus of the cases are the feelings and the people involved instead of all those detective jargons and all the hard sciences. How much do I adore that JaeHan actually used a dictionary to figure out a lab report word by word?
There's so much more gushing I could do for this drama but everyone is already doing that so I think I'll just state that I love that the ending song was chosen as the ending song. Right after JaeHan's moment-of-badassery-shot, I just sat and watched the credits roll, letting the song wash over me. I love the song's vibe, its tone, its melody, its indie feel and really, the lyrics make it so beautiful and apt. My favourite line was: If this road ends, will there be another road? Hey, even the clip at the end while the ending credits rolled was a masterpiece!
I feel so empty but so satisfied and it's been a while since I've revelled in something SO GOOD! I love you, Signal! ♡

This has been by far the best drama of the year for me. Jo Jin-woong literally win my heart with his amazing acting. The man never fail. Jae-han was so righteous and full of determination, never give up on his fight to correct the injustice and corruption of the society.
The opening ending literally scream for a season 2 and much preferable with all the cast back together. There is still unanswered question and if season 2 comes about, Sohn Hyun-joo will have to join the wagon as part of the ensemble of the big bad. I am usually weary of season 2 but the PD and writer are giving serious thought and they know how great Signal is that if they were to have a season 2, it cannot fail it predecessor.
I need season 2 just because I want the adult PHY to finally come together and join hand with LJH to fight the corruption. Like a father, son - best friend duo tag team. LOL!
I am curious if LJH had made communication with someone else through the transmission that is not PHY. His walkie talkie is one and only and the only reason PHY originally had it was because LJH was killed and was no longer in possession of it. But now that he is living, I do wonder if he he has transmission with someone else and who? Is it PHY once more.
Guess I'll have to pray the drama god for a season 2 since there is still so much unanswered question. And if there is, the stakes is getting much higher with the battle against corruption in the current timeline and risker for the 3 as all 3 had cheated death once.

i started keeping up with signal recaps starting from ep. 10. i know, i know...i was very late to the game. i didn't start watching it until last night. i had been trying to keep away from starting dramas so i could finish my work but that didn't happen. i commend everyone who watched the drama when it first started because i don't know how i would have been able to stand waiting week by week. i had to dramabeans every few minutes because i was waiting for the final ep recap.
there is one thing that consistently bothered me throughout the drama, lee je hoon's breathy voice. i don't think i've watched him in anything before and so i don't know if that's just how he is or if it was for this particular drama. i had to remind me myself a few times that this is a good drama and to not let it bother me too much.
overall, i must agree that this is one of the few dramas that has been so consistent. i'm quite glad i jumped on board the signal waves (hehehe) otherwise i would have missed out on a great drama. i've been consistently pleased with the dramas i've tuned into from tvN and am expecting more great things on the way. should there be a next season, i do hope much of the cast remains on board. i know i will come to appreciate the ending even if a second season does not come to pass. (i kinda hate open endings and it takes a bit to come to terms with it.)

Definitely hands down one of the best dramas I've seen. And though I started watching not too long ago, I've consumed a good many many. SO MUCH LOVE FOR SIGNAL! Well done, PD and team and amazing cast.
I really respect creatives who respect the audience. Each week, they didn't shy away from giving us details, complex turns, subtle shifts - so much unsaid, unspelt out and yet to anyone who pays attention, it's all tightly crafted and makes sense. Just fantastic.
I love the character of Jae Han. Somehow he's got the same sort of vibe Manager Oh has. Men in ordinary jobs who become extraordinary because of their amount of heart and dedication.
There were points along the way, Detective Cha annoyed me a bit but that was because that pace was so fast, and her character was trying to catch up with time while we the viewer were already privy to both history and future. Still, her portrayal was bang on in terms of showing a younger, more naive and emotional self and the older, tightly controlled professional with a secret heartbreak.
Most of all, what I really loved about the show was how at the beginning, they were all isolated beings feeling alone in their battles but with each time loop, the connections wound tighter, and though it feels like time reset, they're at the different place. So Hae Young and Soo Hyun are no longer seeking to address a long lost kin/love, but now are a team and Jae Han is also aware he's connected. I really like how they've done this with along with the time loop of changing facts.
Normally one says, no don't do sequels but some sequels have been terrific, so as long as they have the same team, I say, go for it. I'd definitely watch it.

Agree, in the first 2 episodes, I believe, statute of limitations was removed in 2015 because of Kim Yoon-Jung's. The nurse who was the murderer/kidnapper was caught in 2000. History did change, so nope, statute of limitations -- still alive and kicking.

This is part of the reason why a second season would be so welcome! I'd like for the writer to really establish the rules of the timeline they ended on. Luckily, most of the cases aren't affected by the cold case squad never forming because Lee Jae-han altered many of the cases they worked on anyway. So many sections of the present timeline were spent on cases that didn't become cold cases at all in the final timeline, but I'm left wondering about the resolution to the South Gyeonggi serial murder case...

If this is the case, then I really applaud the team for this consistency. Come on, it's something they could have just missed because people "might not notice" since they can remember the change in the statute of limitations on the first two episodes.
That's why I'm ecstatic about the possibility of season 2. Please! I need answers!

In the present, you can just upload the corruption files on the internet and let it spread like wildfire and become so viral that the authorities have to look into it.

AMAZING, AMAZING SHOW!!! This show was solid from beginning to end. This shows what Korea is capable of doing when things are planned and research is done correctly. This is the reason why I stick to Korean dramas even through the bad ones, because I know that if I am patient, my patience will eventually pay off. One of the things that attracts me to Korean tv shows, the characters are more than often portrayed as human, they make human mistakes, they have human emotions and even the "bad" guys don't tend to be entirely bad just for the sake of being evil. They are just sometimes human beings that are caught between unfortunate circumstances that leaves them no other alternative, however then again some are just evil. Almost no character in this show or K-dramas is one dimensional.
I can honestly say that Jo Jin-woong is one of the BEST actors Korea has to offer, his emotions felt truly genuine, he didn't just act a character, he became LJH. He made this character feel so real that I can't help but agree with netizens, He was capable of convincing us that LJH actually exists somewhere out there, he made him feel real. Also I truly hope he gets the Daesang, he truly deserves it.
While I am kind of sad that CSH lost 15 years of being with LJH, I completely understand that something had to be bargained for the three to be alive in the end. I will just like to think that those 15 years were a small price to pay for a lifetime for them to be together, that is unless the writer writes a season 2 and LJH dies again, *Knocks on Wood* Don't you dare writer!!!
I said I don't like open endings and I still don't because more often than not they are not done correctly, however this writer managed to pull it out and while I saw it coming it was not an ending that did not leave me satisfied. Although I must admit I wanted to watch the reunion of CSH and LJH, but hopefully that is done in the second season (I hope, if there is one)
Anyway, Thank You Gummi, ones again and Good-Bye fellow beanies, it was a pleasure and I hope to see you guys in the next one (especially season two) :)

The proof that this drama is freakin good is that I am not even upset when it has open-ending.
It is a great journey until you do not really care with the destination.
I hope other big tv stations start to pay attention to their stories, instead of focusing on paying big stars. Thanks for TVN crews, especially the script writers and directors, that always give us good stories to watch.
I do hope Season II for Signal as I want to see all the protagonists to be happy and surrounded by their loved ones. I hope the writer-nim read these comments to catch our hopes hahaha
Let's not give up!!!!

Ok I have a question, I think I'm just dumb - If their memories have changed, how can they remember the old memories? Won't they get replaced by the new memories? I feel like I've been watching 16 eps of inception, not complaining though.

Or only those who've come in contact with the walkie talkie can remember the erased past?

This. You often see this in time travel dramas, those involved and those who were privy to the changes would usually retain the old memories, so I'm guessing it was the same with this one.

Once you've held the walkie-talkie and became a part of the transmission even just once, you'll be able to remember the timeline before the change. That's my take.

this one is the most probable reason. prior to being part of the transmission, CSH wasn't aware of any changes (even her death in one of the timelines).
imagine doing the change and not knowing it? that's just totally weird. even in Back to the Future, those who are in the time machine knew the changes made in the past that affect their present.

I think only ppl who talk thru the walkie-talkie who would notice changes. As N A said, CSH wasnt aware of the change in South Gyeonggi victims. But after she talk to LJH, she remembers old memories & new memories.
And i've been racking my brain on which version of PHY warns LJH to not go to Sunil Mental Hospital in the first place. The 2015 PHY just found the walkie talkie so it can't be this version. Does it indicate another future of PHY, which probably show up in season 2 haha

I'm so, so, so glad that I decided to watch this drama thought it's not my usual genre. It's rare to have a drama so captivating from start to finish. Even in some of my most favourite dramas, there would be some less than interesting episodes; but with Signal, every moment is well crafted. I seriously love this drama. It's definitely one of my all-time favourites now.

I'm out of praises in regards to Signal. This is my first time watching all the 3 leads and in my mind they'll always be Det. Lee jae han, Det. Cha soo hyun and Lt. Park hae young. Heck even the supporting casts were so memorable. This will be the drama to beat in my history of k drama watching since 2003.
I am truly satisfied with everything about this drama (I'll treat the obvious PPL as a separate Subway cf) and I'll be sure to revisit it again soon. Thank you, Signal.

I agree about Jae Han being the hero of the story, not because he did not make mistakes, not because he was perfect, not because the other 3 didn't suffer enough, but because he never once gave up on justice. He faced the corruption of the system head on and didn't stop trying just because it was really difficult. he didn't just say well i can't save the one person i had to and in the end i'll die so why do it... he was just that selfless and he just had that big of a heart. Seriously, through the years i've loved a number of characters, but Lee Jae Han has come to be my #1. Because he didn't have money, or superpowers, or a dark past to make up for, but HE STILL CHOSE TO FIGHT FOR THE INNOCENT AND FIGHT AGAINST EVIL. that's why to me he's the greatest of all heroes. Like i'd totally marry the guy, over all my other ideal men LOL.
if Signal has given me anything other than PAIN and HEARTBREAK is Jo Jin Woong. the man is just great as LEE JAE HAN, I don't think anyone could be so right for the role. In my opinion not the ending I WANTED, but oh well, what's a little thing compared to the master piece.
Soo Hyun and Jae Han as a couple are as heartwarming and heart-wrenching as any melodrama OTP, maybe even more than many I've seen. LONG LIVE our beloved Lee Jae Han, Cha Soo Hyung, and Park Hae Young

BTW if it does get a 2nd season (which I desperately need) it has to be with at least the 3 leads. I don't think my heart could handle it if only 1 or 2 of them were in the new season. Because aigoooo both JaeHan and Hae Young's relationship and LJH/CSH's relationship are just precious and beautiful and make up for a big part of what I enjoyed in Signal. therefore they CANNOT just tell me that one day one of them (the characters) left or lost contact or some crappy excuse for not being able to get the 3 of them. I rather wait a bit longer just to get the 3 of them again

Many may fault the ending for its lack of closure, but I personally can think of no better way to end the series than on Lee Jae-han alive in 2015, with the fight still burning in his eyes. It was freakin' perfect.
Okay, yes, my satisfaction may partially be because I've loved Jo Jin-woong like crazy since first seeing him as Moo-hyul in TWDR and watching him get his shining moment of survival in that final scene had to be the most gratifying thing ever. No one deserves to play the hero more than him.
I like that they couldn't fix everything and that some fights still await on the road ahead. I'm not really sure what else to say for the moment. Signal is the kind of drama that makes me feel so damn full of emotion just thinking about it. More than the clever plotting and time-changing elements, it was the lovely attention to human connection, growth, and struggle that really captured me from start to finish. I loved watching the ways in which our characters would look out for each other over the course of the drama and especially how Lee Jae-han would use his knowledge of the future to make Cha Soo-hyun's and Park Hae-young's lives more lovely than they were the first time around. They gave each other and everyone, I think, the will to hope and fight for a better future and that is pretty damn amazing.
Definitely the drama to beat this year.
Thanks!

oh and like some of the commentators have said above, this drama PROVES that the pretty and the swoony yet not so real mainstream love stories are NOT the main appeal of a drama, not by a long shot. not that Je Hoon isn't handsome, I mean he is, but his pretty looks weren't the focus here. and I think we all adore and love and wanna forever protect Lee Jae Han played by the talented JJW, who's nothing like your usual kdrama male lead. tight, thoroughly thought story, + great acting (and Jo Jin Woong's talent to make us cry w/him) are what really make up an unforgettable, impressive masterpiece

Thank you Gummimochi for recapping Signal and many thanks to all the Beanies who raved about it in the Open Threads. Glad I heeded the recommendation and started watching. Really liked the OST theme music too.
Jo Jin-woong in this role of Lee Jae-han...a formidable character and a force to be reckoned with in his own right. A job well done to writer Kim Eun-Hee, PD Kim Won-Suk, main leads Cho Jin-Woong (also watching him right now in Chuno too), Kim Hye-Soo, Lee Je-Hoon and to the rest of the cast.
I've watched Three Days and now Signal. I'll definitely have to check out Ghost.
Finally a kdrama where the main lead characters are cops and are anything but "Keystone Cops." Tired of watching insanely incompetent police run around in kdramaland bungling things up and missing important clues.

I don't get the hype about this drama either. It is not bad and Yes, I had fun watching the 16 episodes. But I also had a lot of reservations about the plot and the act of the characters. Some episodes were too long. Jo Jin-woong did not start well but he got better towards the end. Lee Je-hoon overacted for most of the time, I heard the explanation from him but I still think that he overacted. Kim Hye-soo is the only one that was consistently good throughout the series.

It's okay, but you've said it so too.. You had fun watching the 16 Episodes . One reason for its hype is because of it's consistency and tight script which is very very rare for a time paradox drama. The connection of every detail is astonishingly laid out and the plot is in my opinion very well thought of. Just when you think the episodes are great, it just goes up from there. When you think you've known the writer, you haven't expected enough. The characters are real and imperfect and human. And although not every viewer may be pleased with this drama, the admiration from korean viewers are enough testament.

Yes, great consistent storyline that keeps adding on the relevant layers, all events hanging together coherently, characters true to themselves throughout ... we can hardly get that from most kdramas, let alone from a time paradox drama, but Signal delivered on all counts! :D

Wow. It is so hard to stick the landing on time travel stories and this one managed it pretty well. Paradox ain't easy, you know.
Where to start: Obviously, the writing. Excellent characters, excellent use of real cases with just enough shift to make them believable, excellent dialogue, just really good writing all around. This isn't just good kdrama, this is good drama.
The directing was fantastic. The edits and the blended scenes where past and present merged was so good. The music was stellar throughout. Never over the top, always restrained, understated, until right when you needed it to be there to lend the extra emphasis. Really well done.
The acting. Wow. KHS had the hardest job in this drama: to play two characters who were completely different, but intertwined enough that you could see the echoes of each in the other. The only thing missing was unwrapping her transformation from Rookie to Team Lead after LJH disappears. Can we have that in hypothetical S2?
My only complaint is how we didn't see any of the big bads really suffer at the end. I wouldn't have minded Director Kim getting lit on fire, but I really thought it was a quick wrapup on the corrupt Senator who was behind so much of the plot. I wanted something more there.
But really, bring on S2. Signal 2 + Liar Game 2 for Friday/Saturday nights? Please?

I think getting beaten to death with a blunt object by a group of thugs probably goes on the list of one of the worst deaths out there - I mean, he clearly suffered. So I was ok with the Chairman Kim Bum Joo getting pummeled to death. As for SenatoJang, I don't think this is the last of it. Hence, the hint for a second season. I do wish I could have seen Sun Woo given justice and his name cleared publicly and that asswipe Jang Tae Shik (or whatever that rapist punk's name is) get his comeuppance.
