Hi how are you

I have been so nervous, cause my thematic tours started and I had 22 people on the first, and everyone was so satisfied. I was so scared there´d be no interest.

and I am getting a prize for my effort of collecting folklore for 4 years. From the president... the bad thing is they want a 5 minute speech AND I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO SAY. arghhh. it is not a "will you or not" situation either, I have to. I hate those kind of formal things. and they will record it, but I hate being filmed. I always run away from tourists....

and tomorrow is the sea monsters workshop, I hope that goes well. I bought ink but I already used it all on my own drawings, I have to go out now to buy a new one. LOLZ. over-enthusiastic scribbler...

and also, my fangirling got worse, obviously, cause my favorite, Jüri Pootsmann, won the Estonian pre-selection. Weird coincidence: I tweeted that he kind of reminds me of the Estonian version of Bogummy: abnormally kind and goodhearted, a bit awkward and utterly sincere puppy. And then he goes and releases a new song called I REMEMBER U (!!!) with the third place Cartoon. Talk about coincidences...
The ESC entry: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Q-2UL9QrP8

the new song: https://soundcloud.com/nocopyrightsounds/cartoon-feat-juri-pootsmann-i-remember-u

I am going out now, but before:
watched SFD, CBA, Signal on hold, instead of heavy drama watching there was heavy ESC songs watching.

have you ever had incidences where you compare person B to person A, and then person B does something that feels like confirming your thought?

Hi superfox,
Wow, you are busy. In a good way. Prize from the president? Speech? Go superfox, you can do it, I'm rooting for you. Love the theme and its success, so the sea monster workshop is one of the themes? Do I ever wish I was there to help, art projects and getting suppplies is my thing, love colors, materials, artsy stuff. Keep us posted.

hi redfox! It's not every day a beanie gets a presidential award, congratulations! I hope you'll find a way to get through it without too much awkwardness.

I don't think I've ever had the feeling you describe, but I've had plenty of times where I thought 'Person A reminds me of someone, but who??' and then realise it's Person B.

Happy Weekend Beanies!
Border has been awesome! Its greatness was uphill all throughout and that ending was amazing*talkaboutconsistencylol*.I've only watched 4(and a half?) Jdoramas but they've all left me satisfied and complete. They left me not wanting anything more. Well, except for a season 2? Or maybe it's just that I've been watching the right ones? Rookies is my favorite as I'm a sucker for that kind of drama. Pride and Orange Days were also good but I didn't see all of Love Shuffle. I thought it was good but I didn't want to see the ending. I couldn't stand Tamaki Hiroshi or his character or his character's girlfriend(or was it ex?). I'd watch Rich Man Poor Woman but I'm sick of that kind of dynamic. I've heard only good things about it though.

Oh Cheese, whoever thought that such a world filled with interesting and complex characters could fit in 16 episodes? That was what I wanted to say. But there's no denying that the drama lost its focus in the latter part. It got caught up in a certain arc, one that was stretched too thin.

I mean if they had gone for fixing the broken bromance(/trio) instead of a love triangle, that would've been great. I did like the Jae-woo and In-ha bits a lot though. I love that dynamic.

Imo, the chairman is the real bastard. I disliked more and more but loved that his douchey-ness was the catalyst to Jung's realization*whichprobablyshouldn'thave happenedinthelast30minutes*. Yes, he had good intentions. But it left people only with pain. I mean it should've been a win-win, really. Jung gets friends who are like siblings. The Baek siblings get a kinda family and financial support. And he could watch over his son. It could've made everyone happy. But if you look real carefully, it's messed up. You use two kids without a family to keep tabs on your son because he's "strange". In the end, it hurt everyone: Jung who found out that his father thinks something's wrong with him, the Baek's who find out that they were only like pets who were kept because they were "good" for his son.

I still love Cheese though there will always be that "it could've been better" but I can move past that now. There's nothing to be done anymore anyway. I'm actually surprised that I liked the ending. I mean, I hate that time-skip and the Jung-skip. How could you scrunch a complex character's growth in, what? Less than 30 mins? And I don't think I want to hear anymore piano-playing for a while. But the wrap-up was nice and felt quite right.

So I'll choose to remember CitT for the great things. It was so refreshing esp at the beginning. I mean, I wasn't the only so shocked at the asking out scene that I had to check if I really was watching a kdrama, right? I also love love love the music. Most importantly, it introduced me to actors with so much potential and changed my views on certain actors. I hope I see them again soon. And I hope to see more of Go eun in dramaland.

Yeah I loved Kim Go-eun. Hope we can see her again in a drama soon.

I have to go back and finish Border. Currently I am about to finish Emperor's Cook. I watch Jdrama to take a break between Kdramas, and some are really good.

Border is indeed awesome. I always enjoy japanese drama because they always seems more consistent in plot to me, haha. But I think I need recommendation here, because my latest japanese dorama was ouroboros (which is awesome too- according to me, at least).

I think I need to stop thinking about cheese. It's enough and tiring, when will all those controversies dies down...

Border is so great, one of my favourites of all time - and yes, that ending! Jdramas really don't let their viewers down easy, but sometimes that's what makes art - not giving the viewers what they want, but what they need.

Cheese is more a case of forcing some arbitrarily-chosen stuff down the viewers' throats and getting mad when they puke. I wouldn't feel half as betrayed by the drama if it had just been like that from the very beginning, but the beginning we got was so great and so intriguing that the last quarter/6 eps just feels even worse in comparison. I really wish they had actually explored Jung's childhood properly instead of sticking with the lazy 'he's weird and psycho' party line and leaving it there.

But those first 6 episodes, and selected scenes all the way up to episode 12, were SO good. And the breakup scene in the cafe in the final episode was beautifully played.

And I'll join you in hoping Kim Go-eun has another hit project, she's too good an actress to not be seen more.

Why are the new current and upcoming shows not interesting enough? -_- Now that OMHE has ended (although I watched that for the happy vibes), I only have Signal left. But it's ending so what to watch now? :(

Maybe rewatch Reply 88 and watch YOF: Africa since it's the cast who got me to finally enroll in a Korean class. Or go back to reading Chinese novel translations. >_<

I watched the 1st 2, however I hope this isn't just about one case. I'd like them to do more than just focus on Kim Bum. However, he does do scary psychotic pretty well - I think it was the scene where he told his mom he didn't want her to be happy that got to me the most. What kind of monster did you create mom?

Yes, Kim Bum gives me chills. I like that he has his own interpretation of the role and not just ripping it off other villainous counterparts. The way he throws his lines with a sweet voice makes it all the more spine-chilling.

Happy Friday! Feel tired just thinking about getting up one hour early on Monday.

Waiting to watch Signal finals. They say 'Saving Lee Jae-han' is nation's wish. lol
Still no interviews of Jo JinWoong (Lee Jae-han). So I had to dig through some old articles.
Intestingly Jo Jin-woong didn't like the plot of Signal before reading the scripts. He said he couldn't accept the fantasy plot base "Walkie talkie communication comes from the past to the present". But one line made him change his mind. Lee Jae-han in 1995 who watched frustrated that truth of crime is covered by higher-ups, and innocent man is blamed for the crime asks Park Hae-young in 2015, "Since 20 years passed, situation in your time must have changed, right?" Jo said in the press junket "Thinking about it, the situation didn't change." and that line was his reason to take the role.

He has 12 years of acting experience. His first drama was 'The Sons of Sol Pharmacy House' in 2009 which had ratings of 48.6%. He was Brutus Lee who was the eldest son (Son Hyun-joo as Song Jin-poong)'s first love's husband. (Things certainly comes around- They both are in 'Signal'. Son Hyun-joo is the evil congress man.) That time Son Hyun-joo praised him that Jo Jin-woong's acting base (gained from the plays) is very solid, and Jo might take his share away someday.

In the drama 'Chuno'(2010), he was the loyal bodyguard of Oh Ji-ho/General Song, and in 'Tree with deep roots'(2011), he was Sejong's loyal bodyguard Moo Hyul. Since then he has worked more on movies, and he won Baeksang Awards for his role in the movie 'A Hard Day'. He got married in 2013 to a lady(kindergarten teacher) who he dated for 7 years. His wedding MC was Jang Hyuk(because of Chuno and Deep rooted tree) and his close junior Kwon Yul (Goo Hae-Joon in One more happy ending. They both were in Roaring Currents/MyungRyang (2014) also. One time when Jo was asked who is the person the most different from his public image, he pointed Kwon Yul. He said unlike his refined perfect image, Kwon is practical/logical? and very interesting guy.)

Required fields are marked *

About how he joined the movie 'Roaring Currents', he said "I happened to visit Kim PD to say hi. He told me he was preparing an Admiral Yi movie, telling me the plot, and showed me a short promotional video. I told him "This has to be complete and shown in the theater". I told him I want to participate regardless of the role. He said he already sent the scenario to Choi Min-sik(for Admiral role). Later Min-sik hyungnim said he decided to take the role, and said I can shave my head and take the role of Japanese general Wakisaka." So he shaved his head and ended up wearing a wig on his wedding because he was still shooting. "MyungRyang was not the piece that you ask what we are filming today. I even had feeling of fear (due to Solemnness). There was a scene Kwon Yul/Lee Soon-sin's son Hwi asked his father "Did you do the sea battle knowing you will win? how did you win?" Then Min-sik hyung said "Heaven's blessing". I got Goosebumps at the scene."

One funny thing - about many scenes he rode a horse in the movie, he said "Personally I felt sorry for the horse, because I was heavy. Later that horse almost fainted -I felt so bad. The jockey said how about me getting off, just once getting off (for horse's sake). lol.
But did he look like he lost weight in Signal? Anyway I will be sad when this show ends tomorrow.

Another news this week:
'Blood' couple (Gu Hae-sun and Ahn Jae-hyun) dating - I don't know why but I feel they look odd?

anyway there's more to Great Cheese Controversy saga..the latest one os the exclusion of PHJ from OST photo book... then there was controversy on KGE's interview (people said she threw some shades to PHJ but it was edited later)... All are so unclear and the only source translating it is the ever-'trustworthy' allkpop (and some netizens comments...but I need the actual news/interview translation/summary)... so I was hoping it'd be covered by dramabeans... but probably you guys already had too much stale Cheese last week....

lol, are you me?

As for the controversy over Kim Go-eun.... I really hope she doesn't suffer too much for it, even if the alleged fancafe post/interview or whatever she said, was very poorly worded. I'd hate to think she was almost in the clear and escaped the drama with a raised profile and lots of good buzz, but then ruined it with some ill-timed comments. I'm not keen on discussing it here either, let's just allow the stinky cheese to die.

Saw many ppl did the same thing too post-Cheese.

I dislike the hate towards the actors, when clearly it's the production team/higher-ups/CJ who screwed everything up. SKJ was accused of sponsor. KGE is accused of shading PHJ. Even PHJ is being accused as playing victims.

As for KGE, I read her original interview (the most accurate translation was posted on Hancinema), for all I see she could've said that in a completely neutral tone/context but got taken out of context [though, on the other hand, she might really intend to shade PHJ, but gotta give her benefits of doubt]... to feed netizens' endless rage on the whole controversy.

Poor girl gotta endure being called ugly and mediocre at acting (she did very well, imo.)

I am! The story is flawed but it's full of hearts and omg the sight gags are hysterical. I also really appreciate them playing with Oh Yeon Seo's sexuality (I mean, she is indeed a man, but she also feels sometimes attracted to men, etc.), esp. after episode 6 where she was freaking out when Honey Lee got close to her LOL This is as close to a lesbian drama as you can get on Korean public broadcast guys. I love how they don't downplay the fact that Han Hong Nan (Oh Yeon Seo's character) IS a guy (soul-wise), and acts like one. They also emphasize the romantic tension between Oh Yeon Seo and Honey Lee. Must have been a blast for those two to act those scenes out. Love it!

I'm watching it too! It has a lot of heart and I feel that it doesn't take itself too seriously. It's one of the dramas that I watch more for the characters and not the story. Like everyone's off their rocker in a good way. Even Choi Won-young's character is supposed to be evil, but I feel that's always subverted by the father and his clairvoyant assistant. Oh Yeon Seo and Rain are hilarious (and I've never watched Rain dramas, ever).

Agreed on LMJ's character. She is much better doing cheeky character (one of my fav was 'Boys over Flowers).

Anyway Oh Yeon Seo is fantastic. She is always great on overacting in all the dramas she was in that I have seen.

0

Hello! :) I'm sure there's a few of us... very few LOL. I mean the show really has the unfortunate luck of going against DoTS time slot. LMJ does feel like she's out of place in the drama, but they would definitely need her since you know that the melo is forthcoming with this one.

I'm still on a non-serious, turn off my brain mode for Kdramas, but Signal is on my watch list when I decide to watch something heavy. I'm also passively watching one non-Kdrama series (House of Cards, the American one) so I think once I get more devoted to that I might check out Signal.

0

Its boring..atelast rain's storyline is.. the only saving grace abt the drama is our dead lady incarnation and her actress boss..both women are really funny..

And again, i dont get it..why is rain famous? except for full house..has any of his drama worked? Is he a superfantastic singer?

and for some reason never managed to like lmj

Hi Everyone! ....... I hope you are all doing well today.

Waiting for some rain later on today. Hopefully it will happen because we desperately need it.

Watched this week:

Six Flying Dragons - Up to episode 38 and oh so fabulous! ....... I've been reading comments here and there and it seems many viewers don't know what to make of Nameless at this stage of the game. ....... What I've concluded thus far is that when they say they're for "stability", I don't think they're referring to political stability, per se. I don't think they care so much who's in power as long as the monarch/ministers-in-power allow them to continue their commercial operations as they've always done. Stability, to them, is operating as usual with nothing altered and nothing taken away. ....... I guess they're like a modern-day lobbyists, minus the poisoning and killing part, of course.

Remember - I think I've lost count of how many laptops Nam Gyu-man has destroyed. I still have 1 1/2 more episodes to go.

Descended From The Sun - Only caught one ep this week, so I'm behind on this already. ........ Liking it so far!

That's all for now. ....... Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

However, if you want to watch Namgoong Min go all out in the portrayal of a crazed, affluenza-afflicted, dare I say, unhinged bad guy .... then this is the drama for you.

Hello all:

Am battling the first cold I've gotten in a while. I'd forgotten how horrible colds are. Other than that, still wading through story entries and getting very annoyed that people don't seem to honor fairytales or even to truly understand them. Working on historical stories now. Then hopefully i'll be free to work on my stories.

Dramas:

Six Flying Dragons: I really like how the writer made Yeon Hee more acceptable -- to me and to BangJi-Yeonhee shippers, at least-- by addressing the rumor that she was JDJ's woman but showing that she is still in love with Bang Ji. Not that a happy ending is probable for those two..but still.

Descendants of the Sun: Warrior-porn of the highest order. Very romantic but empty and drawn out. Am not liking the female lead. I just don't care about her issues..and she is often selfish in the way kdrama women are ..where the viewer is supposed to accept it..just because.

Come Back Mister: Not feeling it.

Mrs Cop 2: Love it! But so many psycho chaebols..as many as adopted/helped siblings who cause trouble to the loving families that take them in.

Signal! Wow! Awaiting the final. Please be triumphant and world-overcoming Signal. Not an easy HEA. I can accept bittersweet. But nothing nihilistic or fatal..in both meanings of the word.

Marriage Contract: I really like this.

Refresh Man: liking it so far.

Awaiting Ms Temper, Memory, the sageuk with LJK, the sageuk about the two princes, Page-Turner

Have a great weekend.

Woman! You have to somehow avoid all spoilers if you haven't watched Signal yet. We're in Finale weekend.

And yes...warrior-porn. Or rescue porn. Or even fairytale porn. It's just that beautiful to live in and watch if you like the idea of noble warriors saving the world. We are invited to just ogle the greatness that is rescuing people. I have no doubt a lot of wonderfully romantic people will sign up for special forces after this show ends. And I have no problem with soldier porn. But the plot is so draggy. And if I liked the heroine I'd be more patient.

I know. I should close my eyes everytime I see the word "Signal". Heh! I'm always watching dramas behind the Korea-airing schedule, and it's been the case since Day 1, so I'm bound to see the spoilers here, there and everywhere, but that's ok.

Hey Carole, I see you are a writer. May I ask you where do you write these stories? I mean do you send them to any platform which posts or publishes them or you are perhaps writing a novel or script? Or in case if you know any platform that accepts stories episode wise somewhat like webtoons are but without the pictures, could you please let me know? I really want to share my stories but don't know any good and reliable platform yet.

Well, I think you could try Radish. Which is a platform for writers. It's only on apple (iPhone and ipad) now. But it'll be coming out on Android later. I'm up there. Folks subscribe to you and get your stories.

My friend Steven Takatsu does phone novels and other kind of literary digital stories and he is also up on Radish. He's super good.

https://takatsu.wordpress.com/

There are quite a few writing platforms out there. I only hooked up with Radish because Seung Yoon Lee asked me to. I tend not to care much about marketing myself.

As for other writings, I have two books published by a traditional publisher. Those are The Constant Tower and Wind Follower, epic fantasies. Wind Follower is more religious tribal.

I self-published My Life as an Onion which is my kdrama tropes love story. I also upload poems to hitrecord.org which is a good community of artists of all kinds. And you can also try wattpad.com which is a community of writers. Once you connect to wattpad you can find out a lot about what's happening in the writing world, I think. I'm there but I don't interact much. I'm generally not good at interacting with my readers...I can be a b it of a hermit. But if you go in to any of those groups, hit me up and add me as your friend. I don't know your writing or I could recommend you to Seung Yoon. I'm careful about recommending folks whose writing I don't know because I don't want him being inundated with bad writers. But you can check out the Radish reading app on iTunes and download it.

You can still write for Radish if you don't have Apple. You just won't be able to use the radish app to see it. The stories are uploaded by writers via the web. By June Seung Yoon and Daniel might have the Android app ready.

There are quite a few reading apps out there for Android too if you want to write for those.

Hope your cold gets better soon (you to sancheezy).

What does HEA mean?

"Warrior porn" - Ha - true but I'm enjoying it, especially when the soldiers go marching by. Yum

I'm waiting for the last 2 to be subbed to watch Signal. Peeps freaked me out! I'm still wondering if I really saw Hae Young's picture in one of the episodes with an older couple made to look at mug shots off a VCR tape.

<Marriage Contract: I really like this.

Really?

I found the characters pretty run-of-the-mill (as in: stock characters) and the story contrived. Which, with the premise not being new, isn't helping.

And I feel like the drama is going to overcomplicate things to be *deep* (the whole thing about Ji-hoon's mom... unfortunately, my measuring stick here is Nagareboshi, which did the whole marry-a-woman-for-an-organ-donation and dealt with the whole issue very sensitively).

The thing is that both characters are extremely likeable. I was kinda avoiding it because of the whole tumor thing. But I figured I'd watch it since Ms Temper and Daebak aren't around yet. Plus I seriously need to decide on a weekend drama. I'm a sucker for a contract marriage. I like semi-rejected heirs who need to please their fathers. I love cold people who soften up and Seo Jinnie is sooo good at being cold and distant. Plus Seo Jin is a hottie I feel saner liking...as opposed to some of the younger guys. All reasons that have blinded me to whatever might be wrong with it. If it gets ridiculous, I'll drop it. But for the nonce, I'll be watching.

0

Required fields are marked *

I'm not sure I can say I find them likeable. We've got an arrogant rich guy (though I'm sure he'll turn out to be a softie at heart) and a super-proud poor girl, who contradicts herself (sometimes willing to do ANYthing to get out of debt, but then again too proud to ask friends for help though they offer – I mean, either she's poor and desperate, or she's not...) ... And I'm annoyed by the kid, who's played as sassy-cute but at the same time does really dumb things. Of course, she's sassy-cute so for the hijinks that will follow but I don't care for it.

But mostly I just find it odd when total strangers meet and their conversations are being all bitchy to each other, assuming the worst of the other person for no reason. It just seems contrived.

I mean, there's worse dramas (it's not Madame Antoine level sort of bad) but it just feels very ordinary. Unless you have a particular liking for the premise or certain elements (I guess like you do :-) ) or are a fan of the actors, I see no reason to watch it....

Happy friday!!
I got knocked out by fever this week, still have trouble in eating but I am getting better

When I am resting cause I have nothing better to do, I remember that kdrama rarely has male character pretend to be female, I knew it sounds bizarre but since we have tons of pretty man in kdrama, it wouldn't be hard to make it belivable.
All the female that pretend to be male is never convincing, I get that in ancient time in better to conduct a bussiness as a man than woman but everyone is legit girl no matter how you look at them.
The only kdrama I knew is ma boy.
But j-drama has quite of it, they have kabuki for ancient time
There kuragehime/princess jellyfish when the male lead like like to dress up and manga has a lot of it.
What do you think? Did reverse gender bender interesting enough as story?

0

Required fields are marked *

idk, the fun with manga for instance is that it's at least willing to flirt with queerness. I don't think most gender benders in kdrama work because kdrama is just about the straightest media ever. Just look at trendies, they're practically a church of heterosexual coupledom--it's always about starting to see each other as male and female, skinship is incredibly gendered (and when a woman does what a man typically would do it's always treated like a reversal), and the idea of being a hetero couple is like the holy grail. Most gender benders are pretty perverse, too--they usually turn the idea of actual homosexual love into a joke, or use it to prop up the hetero OTPness of it all--"~she's soooo wonderful/he loves her soooo much he's willing to ~go gay for her." Female-to-male is bad enough--do not want to think what they would do with male-to-female, which is arguably a lot more sensitive (why would a man dress up as a woman when as a man he will have more rights and privileges? That opens a lot of doors Kdrama won't want to address).

I think Kdrama also pretty much Love oriented,
In Jdrama, I've seen character that dress up like girl but identified as a man, he like to tease people cause he is too beautiful if he dress up, he even straight.
Chinese drama sometimes missjudged a beautiful character as woman by other female character and they go along as sister-ship
It can be about 2 guys that need to rent a room but the owner only let one man or something like that
I think it can work as comedy trope, or like reverse coffee prince.
They don't have to be falling in love

0

Required fields are marked *

You hit the nail on the head right there. While there's no man cross-dressing as a woman (and playing the main lead) that I know of, some body-swap dramas have played with that idea of man being in a woman's body before, though nothing that really makes use of the premise. That's why I'm liking Come back mister (the drama) so much, because Oh Yeon Seo's character has a soul of a man (Kim Su Ro), and acts like one. They also play with her sexuality, boldly exploring attraction ("my soul is attracted to this woman but sometimes my body reacts to this other man" LOL) and bravely depicting Oh Yeon Seo as a romantic lead with another woman!

0
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

Wow, sounds cool! About the only gender bender I've seen that really explores queerness as opposed to exploiting it and/or queer baiting is Painter of the Wind. Kdrama is just so...straight lol. To the point where a lot of the time I think it's rampantly heterosexist (I mean, consider how dogmatic trendies are about fated love/one-man-for-every-woman for instance--or how many classic romance tropes are basically gender performances...or getting to more serious issues, how obsessively Confucian society regulates marriage and courtship...and how little drama questions this). I mean, there are dramas that explore and critique traditional gender roles pretty intensively (thank you Jung Ha-yeon lol), which is something you don't get a lot of on western TV anymore, for instance...but it takes a brave drama indeed to even acknowledge that queerness a) exists, b) is not a joke, and c) doesn't have to be ground under the boot of hetero OTPness lol.

tl;dr. Kudos to Come Back, Ahjussi I guess!

I think as much as indie K movies explore queerness, kdramas avoid it like the plague, for the reasons you mentioned. I never liked Moon Geun Yeung as an actress so I didn't check out Painter of the wind, but now you said that I might have to check it out!
Hate to go back to the Cheese in the trap fiasco, but for the very short amount of screen time that TA Heo and Joo Young got, they were quite accurately depicted as a gay couple in a very straight and conservative society, and I thought that was great. But yeah, I feel like gayness might be even more accepted than male-to-female gender bender precisely because of the reason you mentioned: why would a man dress up as a woman when being male gives them all the perks? (and the reverse is so not true for women, esp. women in sageuks)

0

Yeah, I feel like dramas that portray gayness are still at the stage where they have to be like, "see gay people are humans just like us!" Like Kim Soo-hyun's Life is Beautiful is beloved for having a gay couple that are treated as unproblematic. Yeah. Cheese in the Trap's gay couple were possibly a step further (in the webtoon at least, can't comment on the drama because I haven't seen it) because even though they were background noise they were just people living their lives--they weren't pawns in some kind of political statement. When Korea starts having shows about gayness and gay culture for gay people (so like the Korean Russell T. Davies), I will sit up and take notice.

As far as male-to-female gender benders...I imagine drama would go the Some Like it Hot route and turn it into a joke. Because yeah, if you take it seriously, it's probably the case that a man dressing as a woman wants to explore female experience particularly (or just straight up be a woman), whereas with girls dressing up as boys there's the eternal excuse, "oh they want to be able to use their brain/make money/whatever and society won't let them." idk. Even in western society, the last 10-15 years of advancement in gay rights has come at the cost of separating the normals (ie, gay men who identify as male, gay women who identify as female) from the queers (transgender individuals, transsexual individuals, drag queens and other people into genderfuck). Wouldn't really expect kdrama to pick up the ball on that lol.

Hello everyone :),

My lazy time filled with drama watching came to an end, but it is still good news : gotta work now and earn some money muahhahaha :) !

OMHE ok with the end but Mi Mo was taking so much time to make an obvious decision, ok it is not easy but I missed the happy vibes of the first eps.

DOTS : love SJK, but the story still lacks something but I can't find what exactly

Come Back Ahjussi : not good enough to keep watching , will wait until it's ended, and then marathon it :).

I started It's okay, it's love , I'm at ep 5, but honestly it's good, it might be my first drama with Jo In Sung, I need to check more on him....

Also finish Misaeng early this week : so my top 5 has changed, this drama was healing to me (after cheese trauma it was welcomed)

Do you have any recommandations for sageuk ? I might need a break from 16, 14 episodes. The only one I watched was Jumong, and I loved it, I hesitate to start Queen Seon Duk, any advice ?

Glad you're enjoying It's Okay, It's Love! It is a good one!

I loved Queen Seon Duk. I thought it was very good. It is 62 eps though, so it is quite the time commitment to watch the whole thing. For a more recent sageuk, there's Six Flying Dragons, which is currently being broadcast. It is excellent! Most sageuks are many, many episodes and this one is no different though. Both, however, have very interesting characters.

Happy viewing!

I would recommend Dong Yi and The Princess' Man. The former is in the longer category like Queen Seon Duk (I think it's 60 episodes) while the latter is 24 episodes. Both are sageuks I enjoyed immensely. There's also Empress Ki, which did really well in ratings.

For a lighter, more humorous watch, I'd suggest Sungkyungkwan Scandal and The Three Musketeers.

Six Flying Dragons does continue to be extraordinary. I personally find Nameless to be the weakest part of the show, but it doesn't really matter when the actual historical events are so dramatic. I appreciate the fact that the show continues to make all of its characters well-rounded, complex human beings even as they get closer and closer to annihilating each other. Most dramas shy away from the ugly elements of power struggles, demonizing the losers and canonizing the winners (or vice versa) but this one refuses to let any of the characters off the hook for their choices, even as it fully explores the reasons behind their actions. I just hope the final four episodes deliver at the level of everything that has come before them.

It's a bittersweet week with shows changing over. After the Great Cheese Debacle of '16 we had Moorim School pull a fantastic wrap-up out of nowhere. Cutting the episode order was perfect, if only it had been done with 2 fewer episodes filmed. The last 4 were as you might expect very rushed but they were forced to not draw out the things that were obvious to the viewers and wrapped the show up with a very concrete and satisfying conclusion.

One More Happy Ending is done and I am glad. I was actually disappointed with the show. It just didn't keep the same level of cute-funny it had in the first episodes but it was very sweet. I feel like both of the leads were rather wasted on it though.

Come Back AhjussiThis show is in trouble. It's a mess. The storylines are all over the place. Rain's character is super-annoying and not sympathetic and I'm not feeling his comedy chops. Honey Lee is stealing every scene she's in and keeping it all watchable, thankfully. I suppose everyone on the show must be freaking out at their ~5% rating while DOTS has the nation glued to the TV.

Speaking of, Descendants of the Sun is really delivering. I feel like I'm watching a From Here to Eternity type war epic with a lot of humanity every episode, even though not much is actually going on with the plot.

I joined the facebook group for Vampire Detective so I'm seeing all kinds of promo clips. The translate built into FB is horrible so I can't make sense of most of what's posted and just watch the clips.

Unfortunately I'm not excited by any of the upcoming dramas. Well I was interested in Pied Pier and Mrs. Cop 2 but they're not on one of my licensed services so I don't think I'll be seeing them.

Hi Alessar, About Moorim School ending, *spoiler* I loved the restored bromance and coming-of-age theme throughout (which was well done), but hated the cop-out of the discovery of the chintamani. I mean, people got hurt and died for it and it was the cause of family breakdown and sinister plot and then to find out that it's a reflection of the finder. Not enough of a quest ending for me. Anyhoot, I've recapped the whole drama at http://www.cimiart.wordpress.com if you want to check it out and leave your thoughts. I'm such a fan of Lee Hyun Woo - he carried the story. (i won't get started, but so many themes fell by the wayside and weren't resolved, gah!)

It reminds me of the song "One Tin Soldier" where a village was slaughtered by their neighboring village and when they got to the treasure they lifted a stone and it just said "Peace on Earth." So I'm ok with it all being a macguffin.

I kind of feel like they took the cut in stride. Like when Hyun Bin said "What if I had turned evil?" I mean, if that's not lampshading a side plot that was skipped over I'll be shocked.

Agreed regarding Come back Ahjussi. I pretty much tolerate Rain's storyline (who would have thought?? I've been a hardcore Rain fangirl since my teenage days ~) just so I can watch Honey Lee and Oh Yeon Seo's story. OYS and Rain together are still funny though. This is one of those dramas where you can turn your brain off and enjoy the gags and the heart. Despite the low rating I think the response to the actors has been positive, as long as they botch it halfway through like One more happy ending.

Happy weekend, everyone!

My current Kdrama list:

Signal- Gahhhhh!!! Last week's episodes were just so heartbreaking!! Omurice!! I am sooo excited tho for the finale episodes. I believe in this team and I know they will deliver a solid ending. Can't wait!! :)

Six Flying Dragons - Another fave drama at the moment. It just keeps getting better and I do not regret all the weeks I spent on it. Yoo Ah In is so amazing and so is the rest of the cast! Unleash KillBangwon!!

Descendants of the Sun - Surprisingly, I am liking this. It engages me. And I like the fact that it's somehow different from my current kdama list and that the lead guy is a much improved version from the previous douche-y leads from the writer. I also like the fact that the main OTP actually talk about their issues like real adults. That if you're at that age, you don't swoon into love immediately. You weigh things and see if it works out. Love the second OTP as well. I also appreciate that aside from the romance, the leads take their jobs seriously and adhere to their ideals. I wonder if the title is about this, their professions and how it gives hope to people? On a shallower note, I find myself often pausing the episodes just to admire the beautiful cinematography and the pretty cast, haha! Son JoongKi chose his comeback project well!

Come Back Ahjussi - It's funny but I am not completely hooked on the story. My fave scenes are those with Rain and Oh Yeon Seo, as well as Oh Yeon Seo with Honey Lee. Other times, I space out or do something else. Will try to watch more eps.

One More Happy Ending - Hmm.. Still watching for the leads. Story has kinda fizzled out. Have yet to watch the last 2 episodes.

Youth Over Flowers (Africa) - Ahh, this show is healing for my Jungpal-ed heart. They are all so adorable and fun to watch!! :)

After Signal finishes this week, I've no idea what I'm going to watch. I drop just about every drama I start, even for the smallest of reasons, because any little plot hole or inconsistency I think I can ignore ends up bothering me until the very end. There seems to be certain kinds of dramas, like Signal and Misaeng, that pull me in completely and make me forget that I'm dealing with fictional characters in a fictional world, to the point that I find myself thinking about certain episodes and scenes long after they're over. Dramas like Cheese and Answer me 1988 didn't have that same kind of pull, but (controversy aside), I found were very well written and did a good job of giving you relatable characters living in a very realistic world (i.e. no ridiculous chaebols, evil in-laws, or abundance of forced coincidences and/or absurd scenarios used to drive the plot forward).

I think my biggest problem with some Kdramas is the way lead characters are written. It feels like the characters come second to the plot or story, even in romances. There are so many instances when I find myself laughing, because you have women and men acting as doctors, lawyers, detectives, but don't think, act, or talk like doctors, lawyers, and detectives do. Even when it isn't supposed to be taken seriously, like Mimo's job as the CEO of a match-making agency, I find myself wondering why (and more importantly how) a character even got themselves to that position given their personality and background. When you look at characters like detective Lee Jae Han in Signal, or Chief Oh in Misaeng, who live and breath their jobs, who work so hard to make progress and always find themselves falling short, it makes all those characters look like impostors.

This goes for personality traits as well. Characters are described as nice, or caring, or warm, but a lot the times that translates to naive, stupid, lacking a sense of self-preservation. You see this a lot with Candy-types, and it makes me want to pull my hair out when they trust just about anyone because they're so nice, and remain stupidly optimistic about even the most daunting situations. When I think nice, the character that best fits that description to me is Seol from Cheese. I like that she tends to put the people around her first, and always instinctively tries to make herself less of a burden, but knows when her kindness is being abused and stands her ground. Even when she comes off as a pushover in earlier episodes, it's very easy to sympathize with her character.

That being said, I find it super hard to find dramas with both fleshed out characters and an interesting enough story line. Any recommendations? I tried the first episode of DotS, but something about it threw me off.

Honestly, Misaeng is one of my favorite dramas of all time. Now Signal will be joining it. Misaeng was such an amazing, well thought out, well acted drama up to the very end, that chance encounter of Geu Rae and Chief Oh in the hallway years prior. That was such a nice touch. At least we know that it is possible still to find these kdrama gems :)

You are right on. This is why everyone is hooked on Signal. They play the characters so well, its almost realistic. You can relate to it because its the exact same thing you will do.

Signal will be a drama that will be stuck in our minds, because it is like something we went through, it's part of us.

I'm going to recommend my favorite drama of 2015, Nirvana in Fire to you.

Like you, I've dropped almost all Kdramas I've started in the past 6 months except Signal. I loved Misaeng, one of my top Kdramas of all time, and I've been watching Kdramas for almost 20 yrs. I am enjoying Signal so much that it looks like an early contender for Best Kdrama of 2016 in my books. Though I'm still behind several weeks in eps. Hopefully,Memory and Goodbye, Mr. Black will be good.

Have you watched Heard it Through the Grapevine? To my mind it belongs in the same tier as Miseang and Signal. Granted, there are evil chaebol in-laws, but done right! Everything else about the drama seems to fit your criteria. Real, fleshed out characters. Good story (I thought, anyway. I know milage varies on the type of stories people like.). Spectacular production values. Beautiful, funny, poignant show.

I have! I stopped mid-way (episode 12) through because I got a bit tired with the back-and-forth between the in-laws and Bom, but it's one of those dramas that I always meant to pick up again. That aside, everything else about it is amazing.

Heya my fellow drama-addicts,

Six flying dragons on pause till the show is over. I know its assume but i want to marathon it.

Mrs Cop2: i am just feeling it. It's like the exact replica of the first season, with different cast, and i can't feel the psycho ness. I will drop it. Preferred the first season.

Marriage contract: definitely watching, if only to smile at LSJ's dimples. Hehehehe

Signal: am i the only one going through signal withdrawals already. Where am i going to find a drama as good as Signal?

OMHE: liked the acting but it was drawn out. Still watched till the end.

Moorim School: loved it from start to end.

PCBA: i love Rain but the drama isn't just holding my attention.

PP: where can i watch it with subtitles?

CITT: there is still more controversies? I am a PHJ fan.

Has anyone found subs for Pied Piper? (USA)

I'm enjoying DoTs, can't seem to watch the final 2 episodes of Cheese, actually happy that Moorim was cut so they didn't drag out stuff (liked the ending), finding CBA both funny and sad.

I also can't decide if I should pickup OMHE again - I had to stop 4 episodes ago.

I also wish there were more JDrama translator's, because I have 4 that take foreverrrr to translate and 2 only have the last episodes left. Arghh!

Otherwise, I'm happy and hope everyone else is.

All I've watched this week is the first episode of Come Back, Ajusshi. Not really feeling it, and after reading what people have to say about it here, I'm not inclined to continue.

Nothing is really capturing my attention. Didn't watch Pied Piper but it just doesn't look interesting enough to me, despite my great love for the Liar Game team.

Maybe next week will be better? What's going to start airing next week, anyway? Just looked it up and it looks like Babysitter, Goodbye Mr. Black, Memory, and Ms. Temper & Nam Jung Mi. I hope one of these are worth watching.

DOTS -- looks like it's a like-it or dislike-it type of show. I'm liking it so far: the storyline (despite it being simple), the characters, the scenery... Can't wait for the episode 6 recap to read all comments...

My little baby -- I was going to watch it but didn't find any English subbed episodes. I'm wondering if it's any good or funny?

CITT -- something definitely happened behind the scene. The latest controversy is just so perplexing.

Refresh Man -- the first episode was just okay for me. I can't wait for Sunday to see the next one. Hopefully I'll feel more engaged.

1N2D -- they're funny, yes, but I'm tired of having comedians as guests to the show. I miss the races or missions or crazy games.

Return of Superman -- I heard Sarang will leave the show. Grow up well, Sarang ! Hope to see you around once in a while !

Come Back Ajusshi - It seems I'm the only one who is loving this drama. It is completely ridiculous but the acting is stellar and the scenarios can be almost racy for k-drama. Oh Yeon Seo makes such a fantastic man in woman's body. None of the villains capture my attention except for Choi Won Young, who was a fantastic husband in Twenty Again, but that's enough. I feel this has all the elements I watch a certain kind of k-drama for.

Six Flying Dragons - Others consistently say all what there is to say about this show: It is GOOD. It isn't just actors carrying the show, but the actors are excellent. The writing is consistently worthwhile, too. But it is the way everything comes together that is masterful. I've learned so much history because I've been driven to know more, having characters to relate with.

Signal - Started this and wasn't hooked, but came back. So glad that I did!

Descendants of the Sun - I started this and thought it would be captivating because the cinematography is so beautiful. The settings reminded me of The English Patient, which is a favorite aesthetic. Unfortunately I find myself not going back to it anyway, just no pull for me. That doesn't mean I won't, but that other things are more interesting now.

Cheese in the Trap - Having not read the webtoon, this drama got added to a pile of others that started off with amazing potential and mediocre endings. I wasn't as invested as others, so although I felt the sting of disappointment about complex subject matter that got sidelined in favor of status quo, I made peace with it easily and enjoyed reading comments and interviews, not to mention a few interesting blog posts. I too, hope the actors won't be soured from the medium for all time.

im currently watching CBA, and i really love it. though Rain was always my fav, this drama is a new revelation of him for me. The female lead is also wonderful.

I hav started watching Hero season 2. its my first Jdrama, other than Itazura Kiss. really loved the leads' chemistry and all the secondary characters.

i want to recommend a drama to you guys, ie GOLDEN CROSS. i only watched it recently. seemed like an underrated one but really nice and decent one, those who like law-revenge-investigation-little love combination, plz dont miss it. this made me a KIM KANG WOO fan.

so i will be cheering for him in GBMB, though its a sad thing that he is the villain.

I don't know how do i even manage to finish it. Just purely for the leads i guess. Because they are so adorbs together.

I'm only watching 2 kdramas now. DOTS & Marriage Contract. So far DOTS is below par or on par or slightly above it. I've got to say episode 6 is not bad.. not bad at all. I kind of think episode 5 took a slight back seat and i honestly want more of the 'war zone' description they are talking about.

Marriage Contract is unexpectedly a pleasant watch. I can actually understand why they resort to 'contract'. The build up is well done, i see no problem in acting. The little girl is so cute, she has my heart and my time. LOL

Thinking of starting on Come Back Ahjusshi only when it finishes. I can't endure another Cheese debacle. I will hold on my JDramas marathon until i've finished my semester.

Hi there, don't know whether you are into C-dramas, but 'Murphy's Law of love' was very cute as is 'Whirlwind girl'

I also found those to be super adorable

1. Kiss: the series (Thai drama-currently airing)
2. Ugly Duckling Series : Dont (Thai drama)
3. Crazy little thing called love (Thai movie)

And a lot of thai dramas including Full house (thai remake), Kiss me (remake of itzura na kiss-Japanese) etc.

...and a number of J dramas like Minami Kun No Koibito - My Little Lover, 5-ji Kara 9-ji Made etc. If you don't mind old high school themed dramas with slightly off beat sweetness Nobuta wo Produce, Hana kimi, Kyou, Koi wo Hajimemasu (2012) and Kimi Ni Todoke (2010 movie) would be worth giving a try.

And there's a whole plethora of K-dramas to choose from-
Eccentric daughter in-law (short drama), Oh my Venus, Marriage not dating, My girlfriend is a Gumiho,You are beautiful, SKK scandal, Sassy Go Go (high school drama),Adolescence Medley (short drama-high school) etc.. but perhaps you may already have watched all these :D

Wah! So happy for for so much Signal love, it's honestly just the best. In my world, I'm having possibly the best weekend ever--the awards banquet for Sterling Scholar was last night and I was one of two runners up for my category! I just about died--it was the first time in my life I didn't immediately recognize my name when they called it. :P :D

Dramas

Signal. Yup, I'm dying right now.

Big Man: Eh, it's something to pass the time--I liked the beginning, though.

I'm planning on starting Marriage Contract this weekend, and can't decide whether I want to watch DoTS or not. Men in uniform=major plus. Lack of substance (from some accounts, I guess I'll have to see for myself to really judge)=major downside. Thoughts?

Totally looking forward to Goodbye, Mr. Black next week--favorite actors, favorite plots, and he was wearing a uniform. I died. I know some people didn't like the posters, but I kind of like their simplicity.

I saw that some of you guys started Refresh Man. I think that one's next on my list, too.

That's all, and I hope you all know you make my day. It's great to have so many people who love the same things I do. Happy Weekend, All (Please let Signal end well, please let Signal end well, please let Signal end well)!!

Not sure what people class as "substance" when it comes to dramas, but if I'm entertained by something and find myself drawn to it, then that for me in the sole reason to tune in. DotS is precisely that. Its narrative is mainly character driven, so naturally, the events would come secondary, and pretty much serve as a catalyst for character interaction/development.

Here comes the problem. If like some people, you can't withstand certain character tropes that are so typical of KES's writing style, then this may not be the drama for you. Also, the acting from one of the leads may leave a lot to be desired, and therefore might put you off altogether. Personally, I'm enjoying the characters, but purely on a fictitious front. No slice of life to be found here, that's for sure.

Having said that, I do find some of the show's central themes to be relevant and therefore relatable; but only if characters are able to transfer those emotions across. I think this is the issue some are having - not all the characters are coming across as likeable for them, for whatever reason, and therefore, it keeps you from engaging in the drama.

I do think that people are being a little harsh with this production, considering there's been a lot worse in the recent stream of dramas. But then again, knowing the history of KES's dramas, where you either love em or hate em, I can see how viewing pleasure might be disrupted by the colour of your judgement. Whatever floats your boat I guess.

Just my two cents. Happy watching! : )

Is anyone watching Heaven's promise? It's pretty decent so far (although the main reason I'm watching it is 'cause it's just 30 minutes per episode ) I don't know how it is going to proceed though ... and is marriage contract supposed to be a melo?

Required fields are marked *

Also, since it's the Signal lovefest here, I'l join: I'm a total crier, but I rarely cry for kdramas. I just avoid melo like plague. Esp. the kind where you can sense a mile away that they're manipulating your emotions blatantly. The last kdrama that made me kind of tear up was Kill me Heal me.
But last week...oh man....Signal had me BAWLING from beginning to end. So. Good.
I think it's up there with The Wire now as best TV shows I've ever watched. Nothing beats The Wire for the longest time for me, and now I found one.
I was burned by Reply, so I watched Cheese to forget it, and then was burned again by Cheese! Signal is the only one so far that hasn't tanked. It has done the impossible - it keeps getting BETTER! It also has done another impossible feat: at this point, I cannot give a fuck anymore about why the radio is the way it is; or why all the timeline changes don't mess up more things than they did. It's all about the thrills and the feels, y'all!
Pretty sure I'll cry again at this finale week. Something's gotta give - or in this case, someone's gotta die, and no matter who I'm gonna cry :|

OMHE: Love the leads. She really does look like a goldfish to me. Jumped to last episode from where I stopped at 5. Liked the direction so picked it up again at 6. Now on 12.

DOTS: Amazeballs. Ep 5 was ok. Ep 6 was killer. Loved loved the moments leading up to the poster scene of him tying her boots. Perfect snapshot it time. One of the few shows I catch the moment subs are out.

Signal: Queued up. Picking up from episode 9.

Come Back Mr.: Caught up to 6.

C-drama: Far Away Love with Park Hae-Jin. Not loving the wardrobe, hair & makeup but really enjoying the friendship and storyline. No angst. Not rom com and not melo. Catching this daily when I can.

T-drama: Nothing I must watch right now with end of Bromance and Marry Me or Not.

Side note, Mom doesn't do dramas. She finally watched a few recently. She doesn't like period pieces and romance. Started her with C-drama Meng's Place, then K-drama Cruel City. And got her on NIF after I doggedly drew a relationship chart and wouldn't stop until she started. And now she is on episode 2 of DOTS. Score!

not watching anything airing now thanks to post-Cheese distrust and burned-by-haywire-story syndrome. And I enjoy Signal and trust that it will end well, but I'm still not quite as wholeheartedly emotionally into the present-day story as I am into the past.

idk, I can't love it the way I did Misaeng or Grapevine, it's tightly plotted and feels like it should be great but just misses greatness by a hairsbreadth.

but I do look forward to Page Turner in just two weeks, because I am so ready to see the cast in action and they can't muck up a two-episode drama, right?

I'm with you regarding Signal. It is a notch below Misaeng for me. It's probably because I'm not emotionally attached with the characters. With Misaeng, I laughed, I cried and I cheered for every character in that drama. I didn't get that feeling all the time with every episode of Signal.

Still, Signal is excellent in its own way. It is well executed. The production is top notch. You cant say that for 90% of dramas out there. And I enjoy watching it every weekend. It will be a day of sadness when it ends tomorrow.

Hi everyone,

Almost forgot to ask, how did you like the Downton Abbey ending? Leave it to the English to cram in a wedding, several promising engagements, other pairings, a retirement, a fatal illness retracted, a baby born and one on the way, a new business venture, having the last word in the nasty in-law house grabbing, and still do Christmas and New Year's proud down in the kitchen! I'm glad Edith go some limelight and they weren't stingy about it! Predicable but satisfying. Too much but not distasteful - a curse word that day. Even Mary redeemed herself to a point in my eyes and Barrow came around to not reading poison into everything said. Talk of a movie leaves me indifferent - but I fear I will have withdrawals as bad as when Secret Love Affair and Misaeng ended. Golly!

I haven't watched Downton since Series 3, but I remember liking it a lot up to the second series.

Hi pogo & mev,

One of the things I like best is how well the dual story lines keep me entertained - the Crawleys of the main house and the service quarters goings on in its own right was every bit as engaging. Anyway, it is about the only thing that draws me away from kdramas for an hour on Sunday nights. Which says a lot. Unlike kdramas, I had someone to watch Downton Abbey with, making Violet's high brow barbs all the more fun to digest along the way. \/

I love how Edith reported that she accidentally ended up about to marry a man that would outrank both her father and sister. Hahaha. And i'm glad it worked out for her - she was being particularly admirable the last season or so. I liked how she got involved with journalism and how she took responsibility for not being brave enough to be frank.

I also love Tom - he's really become a pillar in the family. Funny how just some years ago, they didn't think he would be good enough, just being a chauffeur.

I'm sort of in a kdrama slump atm. I used to try every single show on the off chance it might be good and I used to be way more open to trying different genres. Now I'm quite dismissive of shows, I don't even bother trying new stuff because I know I won't like it (I couldn't be bothered with Come Back Ahjussi because it looks really OTT and not my thing). Last year I missed all the good stuff and just watched a bunch of dramas that ended up being pretty disappointing (School 2015, My Love Eun Dong, She Was Pretty, the In Time With You remake, etc). I need to make better decisions about what to watch lol.

I recently watched CITT (totally lost me after episode 12 but I did have issues with Yoo Jung throughout) and Reply 1988 (wonderful ensemble cast, great first half but disappointing second half that felt super dragged out. Still, I feel like it was worth watching because when it was good, it was really good). So yeah. I feel like I've burnt myself out a bit. I might give Signal another try since everyone's been praising it so highly but none of the currently batch of shows really interest me. I'm looking forward to Page Turner and Memory but I'm keeping my expectations low, or trying to anyway :/.

I have been watching some jdramas though!! I enjoy more down to earth, character driven stories so I find myself gravitating to jdramas more and more nowadays (with kdramas I'm always picking holes in the plot, inconsistencies really bug me, way more than they used to).

I had no expectations for Fragile (I just tried it on a whim) but I find it to be an enjoyable watch even though I generally find medical dramas to be very samey. Because it's focussed on pathology it feels like quite a fresh approach to the genre?? My only real complaint is that Kishi feels a bit too infallible, the drama kinda puts him on a pedestal. He's (nearly always) right about everything; I want to see a more human and vulnerable side to him. (I've only watched 4 episodes so far so I think we'll get there. I'm really interested on what made him become a pathologist in the first place). The supporting characters are likeable and are slowly getting fleshed out. Idk. It's a pleasant surprise. Hope it keeps being solid.

The other jdrama I'm watching is Itsukoi (Love that Makes You Cry). It has been nearly pitch perfect so far (as expected of Sakamoto Yuji, basically my favourite drama scriptwriter). It's a very simple show but the characters feel so real, the love story is so tender and emotional. I don't want it to end (only 3 eps to go, noooooo). There are no villains, no infuriating second leads that are basically just there to cause trouble. Every week I end up such a blubbering mess because of this drama. I don't think it will be everyone's cup of tea but I'm still gonna rec it anyway, it really is that good.

Okay, my thoughts as of episode 7 (Spoilers ahoy!!):...

Whoops, I wrote too much and got cut off.

I'm worried about how they'll handle Konatsu's issues and I feel like Haruta hasn't been fleshed out at all (I still can't really figure him out). Ibuki is gonna get his heart broken so badly damn :/. He's definitely on a slippery slope with his father (he's so mercenary, it's scary). He seems to think if he can stay on his father's good side (after basically being the black sheep for years) he will eventually become the chairman and be able to change things for the better, but the price he'll have to pay to get there is too high. I hope he'll realise this soon. Judging by the preview this will all come to a head next episode when Oto meets his dad (shit is gonna go down lol, Oto doesn't take bs).

This show has totally turned me into a Kora Kengo fan, I need to watch him in all things (on a shallow note, his bone structure is gorgeous). I love Ren so much. Thank god he finally woke up, watching him slowly self-destruct was actually painful, especially since we know that he's fundamentally such good and kind person. Oto continues to be amazing. I love that bit at the end when he catches himself staring at her and realises he's still in love with her. Kora Kengo is sooooo good.

I also totally love Takahata Mitsuki, I'm kinda sad that Kiho hasn't had a lot to do since episode 5 (her character arc is basically over, so I get why her screen time has been reduced, but still. I wanna see more of her). I love that Kiho and Oto are friends now, their interactions are the perfect mixture of awkward and sweet. The one thing I absolutely love about Sakamoto Yuji dramas is that he always treats his female characters with such respect; he writes such sensitive and nuanced female relationships (mother-child, friendships, sisters etc). It's great. It's not that hard to do, but most dramas can't be bothered.

Oh! Takahata Mitsuki is also the lead in the next NHK asadora, yay!!! I love asadoras so I'm super excited. Plus Sakaguchi Kento is her love interest, which is so cute. His character looks super nerdy and adorable from the character stills (aka my favourite kind of drama dude). I'm really looking forward to it.

I adore Itsukoi. Love Ren and Oto, they are so, so real (and really perfect for each other).

Konatsu and Haruta are both a bit hard to figure out – I have to say, at this point I don't like Konatsu at all. I think she's just using Ren and whatever "happened" that Ren is feeling guilty about, I'm sure it's something where he is 100% not at fault and she's just clinging to him. (I keep having the impression she is just faking her panic attack moments.) I don't even want her to be with Haruta (although I am not invested in either her or his character), because she what she needs to learn is to be happy BY HERSELF – not snag a boyfriend. Haruta: I don't think he's particularly nice, he's a bit of a user, quite dishonest with barely any conscience at all... mostly I think he just goes with the flow, and doesn't life a finger if someone else can do the work for him (even if he doesn't actively force them).

Ibuki – I feel bad for him, but I also don't. He has some issues he needs to resolve, with respect to his father but also he needs to stop being pushy and LISTEN to Oto. He's a good guy at heart, but he's not the right guy for Oto, no matter how much he wants to be. And he needs to be honest with himself about that, no matter how much that will hurt.

Kora Kengo has been one of my must-watch-everything-with-him actors for a while. He's very good, very versatile. He's hilarious in Hard Nut (okay, Hashimoto Ai is, but they are just such a wonderful combo). He's got supporting roles in The Drudgery Train, The Woodsman and the Rain and Hanamoyu (the first two being very good films). I didn't care so much for Being Good (the film, Kengo's acting was fine). He's amazing in A Story of Yonosuke, which is heart-breaking (he's got a quite Ren-like character there). And Fireworks from the Heart ––– I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but I dissolved into tears of laughter (and awe!) in one, very unexpected scene....

I'm so glad someone's watching the show apart from me, lol. I love reading your thoughts!!

Absolutely. I love every scene they have together and I am so invested in them it's ridiculous. They really are perfect for each other.

Yeah, Konatsu is hard to feel for tbh. I don't know if she is faking her psychological issues (they do seem very unconvincing, but it could just be weak acting) but the fact that Ren turned her away is totally understandable after the way she acted. Whatever happened to her after that (hopefully nothing horrible, I'm scared for that reveal) I don't think is his fault. Haruta is absolutely a shit-stirrer (the way he blasted Kiho in episode 5 was nasty) and I don't know what his deal is at all. I don't understand the friendship between him and Ren either.

Re: Ibuki, I hope he will let Oto go gracefully and extricate himself from his poisonous father asap. I don't want it be dragged out past the next episode tbh.

I watched a bit of Hard Nut and thought the cases were really ridiculous but I loved Hashimoto Ai's character and the dynamic between her and Kengo was great. I should go back to it. Thanks for the recs!!! A Story of Yonosuke is a must see for me, I think I will love it. It sounds like I'll to brace myself before watching Being Good.

I was gonna mention the receipts but I can't put that scene into words, it was so moving. Gosh, I know. Sakamoto Yuji really is a very gifted writer.

The symbolism is great, there's alot of effort put into the little details. I also love recurring shots of the can of peaches as well, it gets me every time.

<It sounds like I’ll to brace myself before watching Being Good.

No, you might enjoy it – it had very good reviews and most people I know that watch a lot of Asian films really quite liked it. In my case, I really liked the director's previous film a LOT and I didn't find Being Good as good as that, in part because it had several storylines that were really separate (intersecting only because characters knew each other but not actually interacting). I also thought the ending was a bit too open (I don't mind open endings, but this one felt to me like they had just stopped filming abruptly).

<the fact that Ren turned her away is totally understandable after the way she acted

Absolutely understandable. She's just very immature, clingy and selfish. She chooses to do things, then blames others for what follows. I'm so sure nothing of what happened is Ren's fault, but really just circumstantial, or, if you want to pursue a "it's your fault because I came here because of you" approach, then it's because SHE choose to fall in love with Ren, SHE choose to not accept he didn't love her back, SHE choose to confront everyone at that dinner, SHE choose to then follow Ren back home.

<Haruta is absolutely a shit-stirrer (the way he blasted Kiho in episode 5 was nasty) and I don’t know what his deal is at all. I don’t understand the friendship between him and Ren either

Yup, a shit-stirrer, for his own gain! I think Haruta is friends with Ren the way everyone is Ren's friend: they just attach themselves to him, using him but actually not being his friend. That's why we were introduced to him as someone who had stolen money from Ren previously, 'picked up' Oto's purse and then staying in Ren's place without asking – just assuming that he can. In other words, he's not a friend.

But Ren being Ren, he turns away no one. He might see something good in all people perhaps, but his biggest issue is that he needs to learn to say "No" (with friends and with cling-on non-friends) and sometimes he just needs to honestly express his own feelings, even if they are 'selfish' and will hurt someone else – because he's lived his life sacrificing himself for others. And unfortunately everyone has taken advantage of that, with two exceptions: Shizue and Oto. And Oto is of course self-sacrificing exactly like Ren, which is why they work together so well: because they give to each other, without expecting anything – the very opposite of Ibuki, Kihoko, Konatsu, Haruta (etc.). Ibuki & Kihoko give too, but they do expect something back (which doesn't make them bad people but it explains why neither is ultimately the right person for Oto & Ren respectively).... With Komatsu & Haruta, so far I'm pretty much only seeing "taking".

The receipts scene is.... just wonderful. And really unconventional, really not the kind of scene you see in dramas. Nakamoto Yuji's magical touch I guess.

The peach can: I so knew Ren would spot it and...

...understand what it meant. :-)

I love also the "subtleties" in the drama. The symbolism in little things. Creaking chairs – in the opening episode, and now in ep. 7. The photos both Oto and Ren took of flowers (all those things that show their connection – sort of reminds me of the manga Strobe Edge's Ninako & another Ren's connection). When Oto divided the flowers into her bottle-vase and the proper vase that Ibuki brought after their mini confrontation. And then the scene with reading out the receipts... which drama has ever had scene as touching as that, with a character simply reading out the items bought and how much they cost?

P.S. Although I agree with you on j-dramas generally, I bailed on Fragile. Found it boring & I have my issues with the female lead. Kounodori was a recent medical drama that I thought was especially good – well done & acted and surprisingly moving.

I find Fragile a pleasant watch but it's nothing groundbreaking and the characters aren't particularly distinctive. I can see why you bailed but I'm sticking with it for now. I find I can lose interest with episodic jdramas (this recently happened to me with Risk no Kamisama) so we'll see. I do like it more with each ep, I enjoyed episode 4 quite a bit.

I find Takei Emi watchable and this role doesn't require much from her (basically just her being cute). I think she's doing fine. Her acting has kind of stagnated over the years though, she never seems to get any better? I don't go out of my way to watch her in things but as I say, she's cute and inoffensive.

I found Kounodori a bit overly sentimental for my tastes (it's a manga adaptation but I wish it was a bit more subtle) but it definitely had its heart in the right place. Solid with a good cast, just didn't quite work for me. Fragile is also a manga adaptation but doesn't feel so much like one? It lacks some of the absurdities that Kounodori has (like Ayano Go moonlighting as a pianist for some reason). Some of the OTT acting as well makes it seem a little silly at times, it's not a dealbreaker or anything (it's fine in other kinds of shows) it just feels weird in medical setting to me. I watched an episode and I thought it was fine but didn't feel compelled to watch more.

Gosh, is it Friday again already? These few weeks have seem to zip along really quickly. I've reduced the drama watching somewhat, as work has been pretty busy and I've just got a residency grant to go to Asia for another 6 weeks, so I'm trying to get as much done as possible.

Drama watching is more erratic, as and when I need a break and I'm certainly not keeping up enough with the watching schedule to participate as much on the forums.

Signal - still really good and we're heading towards the big finale. I love how this writer really doesn't shy away from the time-loop aspect of the story but keeps weaving it tighter and tighter in terms of the consequences of the plot and relationships. So assured and intelligent - it's a real treat. If they don't blow these last two episodes, this will go down as another real success in the vein of Misaeng.

Still watching SFD. Things are now starting to get bloody. I found the last episode really hard - we've spent such a long time with the characters and though we know deaths are inevitable, they feel really painful now. It's the cost of business for us viewers, I guess - to watch and grow with the characters when we all know what's coming.

My interest in Once More Happy Ending and Cheese just fizzled out like flat coke. I haven't watched the last episode of Cheese - best to forget the ones after episode 10-12. Some day, there'll just remain the good memories of the really good moments for Jung and Seol.

Another turn off the brain show is Descendants of the Sun - I think I'm mostly watching this for SJK and Jin Goo - their bromance with deadpan dark humour is pitch perfect. The landscape of Greece is also a little nostalgic as we'd just been there in January. But otherwise, plot wise, medical credibility and other vagaries of political and military stuff one just has to ignore.

New shows in the pipeline - not sure any of them feel unmissable yet. I'll look out for Daebak and the Mister Black show, but am still fairly lukewarm on either. Oh I did tune into watching the Taiwanese show Refresh Man with Aaron Yan. That's one weird thing - I had watched a few Taiwanese shows before discovering K-drama. But now that I've watched K-dramas I'm finding the Taiwanese aesthetic and comedy a bit difficult. I'm not quite sure what's been re-calibrated in my brain since I was fine with Nirvana in Fire and Love Me If You Dare. We'll see how long I can last.

Otherwise, half-watching half-cringing at the political broadcasts leading up to the American elections.

you know, I actually wouldn't mind a version of Cheese that was just Jung and Seol (and maybe some of In-ha's better moments). Maybe someday I'll get over it, but that's only once we let go of the fact that it could have been great.

I wouldn't mind some of Bora or Euntaek's moments too. All the annoying people can just fade into the background. I think eventually that'll be how it remains - we'll just have snippets and stills of those very gorgeously filmed moments and remember how exciting and different Cheese was at the beginning.

It'll take a while and I'll go back to the webtoon eventually - all respect to the source material that created such complex and interesting characters.

Yes, some more Eun-taek/Bora moments would be welcome too, I feel like they were done such a disservice with that hastily-shoehorned resolution to their love line.

I wish we had more of them+Seol. Unfortunately even the Oh Young-gon storyline, when they were actively involved with helping her, chose to focus on In-ho ruining their attempts at getting evidence instead.

Yeah. I read such a good article today about Obama's reflections on his various foreign policy decisions in his tenure. The article is lengthy, you have to stay with it to follow the twists and turns, and also really listen and think about what they're discussing. Real social and political issues are so complex, nuanced and I admire his way of thinking - it's very long game, nuanced and complex, and I admire that he does't play the usual game of first world posturing, even at a cost of his own credibility.

But isn't that the problem with the American elections - it's an entire machine that's droned out to a wide common denominator of people who want sound bites and easy to digest emotive stuff like "make America great again".

Whether you agree or not with his decisions, it's an interesting insight into the way he calculates priorities. And personally, I like that he remains very calm and refuses to get drawn into whichever drama of the day or into the machinations of the allied countries. I guess we'll see in the long term, the implications when it comes to ISIL and Assad.

Thanks! The Atlantic often has good articles, need to starting following them, not just stumbling across the good pieces by chance...

I don't agree with every single one of his decisions, but I like Obama. I still think he'll only be really appreciated years down the line. Very difficult to be president at times like these, in the US (all the partisanship & über-unrealistic expectations) but also given the state of the rest of world...

Just finished watching the movie 'Joseon Magician' and I love love love loved it. I came here to express my love haha and saw that there was already a comment up here. But unlike me they found me boring. Hmm...

If anyone is looking for a movie to watch, I will definitely recommend. I don't know why people found it boring because for me it was really nice. I laughed and cried a lot.

Yoo Seung Ho and Go Ara should definitely star in a drama together too.

Happy OT!

Finally finished Limburger in the Trap. Piano boy actor better be a chaebol of the highest order (i.e., Samsung) to explain the PD's choices in this drama.

I was so disgusted with LITT that I swore off Kdrama for a couple of weeks and watched PBS's Little Dorrit. It's like eating a palate-cleansing course between main entrees in a dinner.

Am back watching Signal now, and am so thrilled with the quality. Only on Ep 10 though, so will get caught up in time for the final, I hope.

Lately I've been so busy I've had to choose between watching dramas and reading Dramabeans. Such a dilemma; I miss the other horribly no matter which one I pick.
