I Remember You: Episode 16 (Final)

We finally say goodbye to this gem of a drama, and while I Remember You’s ending might have lacked that emotional punch to the gut that I was thirsting for, it does tie a satisfactory bow on most of the plot points — and I say most, because some are intentionally left open-ended. Some close on a happy note, some end on a sad note, some evolve into an endless wild goose chase. But yunno what — that’s reality, and life goes on.

EPISODE 16: “I Remember You”

Hyun is still passed out from his sudden onslaught of memories. In his slumber, he realizes that all the cards that Min sent were scenes from the day their mother passed away. In his flashback, the two brothers are playing Scrabble with their mom when the doorbell rings. Mom goes to answer the door, and the visitor is a criminal Dad arrested, here to take revenge.

Mom falls on the ground bleeding as Hyun takes Min to hide under a table, then sees Dad’s work bag, which has a gun inside. Venturing into the living room, Hyun shoots Mom’s murderer in self-defense, and the recoil knocks Hyun out. After hearing the gunshot, Min emerges from his hiding place and sees Mom, Hyun, and the murderer all unconscious on the ground. In the aftermath, Dad covers it up, and while Hyun lost his memory of the incident, Min didn’t.

In the present, Hyun wonders if this traumatic experience was what caused Min to develop psychopathic tendencies. He jerks awake, and as the truth sinks in, he blames himself for Min’s situation. Ji-an notes his anguished expression and automatically jumps in to reassure him that whatever he’s blaming himself for, it’s definitely not his fault.

Min’s earlier words that he was born like that click into place, as Hyun realizes that Min was trying to comfort him. Min wanted Hyun to believe that his psychopathic tendencies were not caused by the murder of Mom and the criminal; he was merely born with it. Hyun breaks down in silent tears at the realization that Min didn’t want Hyun to feel guilty, and Ji-an grabs him in a hug.

Outside the room, Min overhears their conversation, and regrets sending those clues to Hyun.

The rest of the team interrogates Eun-bok, who stubbornly refuses to spill the beans about Joon-young. Eun-bok apologizes for murdering Chief Hyun, but Myung-woo just explodes that they want information about Joon-young. Seung-joo takes the softer route, and tearfully asks if Joon-young was more important than them.

Putting Hyun back to sleep, Ji-an heads out to chat with Min. Going in for a hug, she gently tells him that it’s never right to harm another person, and that people have to take responsibility and reflect on the wrongs they have committed. Even if Min doesn’t understand why his deeds are wrong, he should still own up to it, for Hyun’s sake. If Min chooses to run away from his punishment, Hyun will have to escape and hide with him. When it comes to that, neither Min nor Hyun will be able to be happy. This strikes a chord with Min, who recalls Joon-ho’s question if a happy ending was possible for both of them.

Min asks why it isn’t possible to cover up his crimes, since he only hurt bad people and it’s all in the past. Ji-an replies that as a police officer, she can’t ignore it. In the end, Hyun would be in a very tricky position, stuck between the two of them.

The mood is somber back in the police station, as the three investigators mourn the absence of Eun-bok. They wonder how much he must have been abused for him to think of Joon-young as his savior, and blame themselves for not knowing about his difficult past.

Ji-an visits Joon-ho to inform him about Eun-bok’s arrest. He feigns ignorance, but she tells him to cut it out, listing all the people who were harmed by him — her father, Hyun’s family, Eun-bok, Chief Hyun — but he justifies things by saying he never murders without reason. He only got rid of adults who abused kids, and used a bit of violence to eliminate a bigger threat.

Appalled at his words, she admits that while he had a painful childhood, there’s no way she can overlook all his crimes. He asks what she wants, and Ji-an takes out a gun, declaring her intention to off him. But she refuses to shoot, since doing that will reduce her to his level, and that will only serve to further hurt Hyun.

Joon-ho mutters that he actually liked Ji-an and never wanted to get rid of her. Frightened, Ji-an aims her gun at him, but he walks towards her, unfazed. Disarming her, he twists her arm painfully and shakes out her handbag to find her phone recording their conversation.

He moves to delete the recording, but she tries to wrestle the phone away from him. Grabbing her in a choke hold, he wonders what he should do with her. Ji-an baits him to kill her, since she’s confident her team will hunt him down and arrest him.

Team Leader Kang rushes in to save the day, and Joon-ho pretends they merely had a small tiff. Team Leader Kang came with the intention of reasoning with Joon-ho, but realizes that he expected too much. Joon-ho notes that everyone looks at him like a monster, and Team Leader Kang merely tells him to look at his own reflection.

As they leave the house, Team Leader Kang and Ji-an mention that they were both scared out of their wits, and Ji-an explains that she went alone because she wanted to see Joon-ho’s true self. Having thought long and hard about how to atone for his father’s sins, Team Leader Kang says that he has no other ideas other than apologizing on behalf of his father. Ji-an brushes it off lightly, since there’s no such thing as guilty by association in her book.

Her gracious response causes Team Leader Kang to stare at her in a mix of respect and gratitude. “I liked you. Because I was able to like you, I was glad.” He gives her a small smile, and then walks away while holding back tears. Aw. Back at home, Joon-ho coolly inspects his reflection in the window.

Hyun wakes up and offers to make dinner for Min, but Min already beat him to it. The brothers sit down to enjoy Min’s home-made food, although Hyun merely picks at his rice. Noting Hyun’s distraction, Min once again assures Hyun that it’s not his fault he turned out like that. Besides, Hyun’s reaction was in the name of self-defense. Hyun thanks Min for his encouraging words, and Min can’t help but recall everyone’s words that their reconciliation has only burdened Hyun.

The next day, Seung-joo has found two of the kids that Joon-young saved, picking up from Eun-bok’s previous research. A man and a woman are brought in for interrogation, but both vehemently deny any knowledge of Joon-ho/Joon-young, although the man does take extra interest in the present-day photo of Joon-ho.

Joon-ho visits Hyun, and proposes that they run away together with Min. He reasons that Hyun is unable to arrest him, since doing so would implicate Min as well. Thus, staying put would mean even more suffering for Hyun.

Slowly walking over, Hyun puts his hand around Joon-ho’s neck threateningly.  He says Joon-ho can do whatever he wants to him, but he’d better not mess with Min. Joon-ho merely gives a creepy smile in return, and having overheard the entire exchange, Min leaves without making his presence known.

Back in his own home, Joon-ho finds Min waiting for him. Joon-ho pretty much defies Hyun’s words and attempts to rope Min into leaving as well. Min doesn’t want to be separated from Hyun for a second time, or to continue being lied to by Joon-ho, but on the other hand, staying with Hyun won’t result in a happy ending either.

The investigative team is at risk of being disbanded, and Team Leader Kang declares to his father that he will do everything he can to protect his team. Deputy Chief Kang chafes at being addressed formally by his son, but Team Leader Kang merely says that Dad is childish for avoiding responsibility for his mistakes.

Min asks if Eun-bok has revealed Joon-young’s identity, and Hyun has confidence that he will do so soon. We cut to this heart-wrenching sequence of the team members taking turns to visit Eun-bok, each showing their love and concern for him in their own way. Although he tries to keep his poker face on, it’s telling that Eun-bok is incredibly moved by their words.

Hyun tells Min to ignore anything that Joon-ho says, and he agrees. Min then quietly asks what Hyun’s doing tomorrow, and Hyun takes the hint and answers that he has a looooot of time on his hands. Barely holding in his grin, Hyun brings up all the date suggestions that Min rejected before. Ha, and now, Min wants to do all of them.

They decide to take a walk in a park, and Min looks wistfully towards a couple taking selfies together. Hyun asks if he wants to take a photo, and Min first says he doesn’t like taking pictures before adding, “But you can if you want to.” So. Cute.

Their first attempt is not so successful (Hyun: “We should probably smile.”), and the second is equally bad as the two plaster on forced awkward smiles. But by the third time they’re finally grinning for real.

While walking alone, Joon-ho is approached by the man interrogated earlier. Just as Joon-ho recognizes him, the man stabs at Joon-ho with a knife, though Joon-ho’s quick reflexes allow him to prevent any serious injury by grabbing the knife with his hand.

Taken aback, Joon-ho claims that he saved the man, although the man shouts that no matter how terrible his parents were, he would have preferred to live with them anyway. This seems to resonate with Joon-ho on some level as he walks calmly away, right past his attacker.

Back at home, Hyun’s danger radar pings when he realizes that Min has been in the shower for way too long. There’s no answer when he knocks, and it turns out that Min is at Joon-ho’s place. He has come to end things with Joon-ho, and internally apologizes to Hyun for breaking his promise.

Min proposes that both of them disappear together, since they are both burdens to Hyun. Min repeats his promise that his last murder will be Joon-ho, and tells him to think of it as the price to pay for separating the brothers for 20 years.

Swiftly grabbing a knife from the kitchen, Min goes it for the kill, but is quickly deflected by Joon-ho. The two wrestle to the ground, and while Min manages to grab Joon-ho from the back, Joon-ho gains the upper hand and punches Min to the ground.

Joon-ho picks up the knife and stabs Min in the gut. Hyun rushes over, late by a few seconds, and sinks to his knees when he sees Min’s injury. He tries to keep Min conscious and Min thinks to himself, “Hyung, for 20 years, I hated you, I missed you, I waited for you, and I watched over you. That was the entirety of my 20 years. You were my everything.” And Min goes limp.

Desperate, Hyun tries to administer CPR, but Joon-ho matter-of-factly says that it’s useless. With lasers shooting out from his eyes, Hyun punches Joon-ho, and eventually manages to corner him in a stranglehold. But at the last moment, Joon-ho’s friend whacks Hyun on the head and he slumps to the ground, going unconscious.

He wakes some time later, and Ji-an voiceovers that Min had disappeared, just like Joon-ho’s corpse-less murders. WHAT? Nononono, say it ain’t so.

The team watches Eun-bok’s interrogation, where he confesses to stealing Joon-young’s fingerprint documents and burning them. He agrees to give testimony to Joon-ho’s deeds, and inwardly apologizes to Joon-ho.

Somehow, Joon-ho seems to know of Eun-bok’s betrayal, and turns on his phone, which the police pick up on. He makes a call to Hyun, and the two meet up. Joon-ho wants this chance to make an official farewell, but Hyun has one remaining question — why was Joon-ho so obsessed with him from the start?

Joon-ho replies that everyone had always treated him with contempt, but little Hyun had merely called him “different,” and for the first time in his life, he felt understood. Hyun was the kid Joon-ho wanted to be, while Min is his current alter ego. Chuckling at the irony of it all, Hyun muses that the one word changed his whole life. He states that there’s only one reason that he’s not killing Joon-ho at the moment, and asks for Min’s return, even if it’s just the corpse.

The police make their way to their rendezvous point by tracing Joon-ho’s cell phone signal, but find nobody there. All that’s left is Joon-ho’s phone, and he disappeared after that.

Hyun stops by Ji-an’s house three times as promised. On the last visit, he lets her know about his plans to leave for somewhere, but doesn’t go into details. And then Hyun disappeared as well.

One year later.

Thanks to Team Leader Kang’s efforts, the investigative team has survived, and they even have a new maknae to tease. Seung-joo still makes frequent visits to Eun-bok in prison, and it’s nice to see them keep their hyung-dongsaeng relationship.

On her walk home, Ji-an regrets not stopping by Hyun’s place once more, so that he would have to visit her three more times before disappearing. Team Leader Kang and Myung-woo pay a visit to Indebted Friend, aka “Dave’s ahjusshi.” Friend says that Hyun hasn’t contacted him, although the three immediately start discussing their dinner plans. What, are they BFFs now?

Back at work, Ji-an stops by Hyun’s old desk, and feels a sudden sense of longing for him:

Ji-an: “There are days when familiar places suddenly feel unfamiliar. On those lonely days, I think of you, Lee Hyun. If you think about it, we met because of Lee Joon-young, as children who’d both lost their fathers to him. When I think back, even in the worst situations, there were good things that happened — we got to meet each other. But if we hadn’t lost our fathers to Lee Joon-young, if such a thing didn’t happen to us, would we have met? I think we would still have met.”

In her fantasy, little Ji-an would have fallen for Hyun at first sight, while he’d tell her to get lost. Min would be with them, and they would grow up together. They would hang out and have fun, laughing at Ji-an’s disgruntlement at their liking of foreign movies without subtitles. They would even have guests come over from time to time — aw, it’s the team, with Eun-bok too, and Myung-woo finally calls Hyun “David.”

She’s woken from her reverie, and the team is called to a new crime scene, only to find that someone else has gotten there first: Hyun, coming back full circle to their first meeting. He reprimands them for being late, and launches into the details of the murder.

Myung-woo cuts him off, and Team Leader Kang marvels that Hyun’s still the same rude guy. Seung-joo goes in for a hug, but Hyun is quick to shove him off. It’s Myung-woo’s turn and he opens his arms wide… but Hyun just observes that he has aged. And finally, he gets to Ji-an, who returns his small smile with an icy stare.

Yesyesthankyou Min is alive, huddled in his hospital bed, as Joon-ho’s friend arrives to inform him that Hyun left just awhile ago. We get a glimpse of Hyun’s visit, where he was relieved to see that Min’s alive. The woman gives Min a present from Joon-ho — a new identity. In essence, he’s giving Min a choice: Live as Hyun’s brother but pay for his crimes, or remain hidden for the rest of his life. Interesting.

On a walk with Ji-an, Hyun says he knows apologies are not sufficient to make up for his sudden disappearance. Ji-an is burning with a thousand questions about his past year, but knows that he wouldn’t answer them anyway. She asks if he was chasing Joon-ho, but he answers that that’s what he’ll be doing in the future.

After Joon-ho had disappeared, Hyun had finally recalled the words Joon-ho said to him when he was a kid. “You can become as you wish. You can become like me, or you can become the opposite of me. There isn’t just one door. You can leave through the front door, or the back door.” He thinks to himself that he pities Joon-ho a little, but will not understand or forgive him.

Ji-an warns that if he plans to disappear again, he can just leave for good right now. Thankfully that’s not his intention, and she can barely hide her happiness at his answer. He asks if she missed him, and she shyly nods.

Pulling her in for a tight hug, Hyun goes in for a gentle kiss. They pull away and smile bashfully at each other, and then Hyun holds her face in his hands, and swoops in for the winner. Thank you drama gods.

At the hospital, Min is pondering his choice. He makes the decision and he leaves the hospital with a smile — empty-handed, the envelope (and new identity) left behind.

As Ji-an and Hyun walk hand-in-hand through the streets, Joon-ho walks past the couple. He voiceovers, “Hyun, I’m going to disappear now. So, come and chase me. Don’t give up, and find me.” Hyun turns back to see Joon-ho’s retreating back and thinks, “Don’t worry. Wherever you hide, I will definitely find you.”

COMMENTS

Phew, what a packed last episode. In this episode alone, I counted two stabbings, three disappearances, two choke holds, two grabbed collars, five hugs (one denied), two confessions for our cute heroine, and one amazing mind-blowing kiss. All in a day’s work, I would say.

I Remember You was one of the few cases where I actually had no clue what I wanted for the ending, and trusted wholeheartedly in the writer to score the home run. I do wonder if Jang Nara’s scenes had to be cut down since she got into an accident on the day of filming, although I must say, her lips are definitely working. We’ve all had our fair share of disappointing finales, and while this one didn’t culminate in an emotional high on par with the reunion scene in episode 12, it did leave a sweet aftertaste. Certain scenes started feeling repetitive — Joon-ho just wouldn’t let go of his plan to live with the brothers, and people just kept going to his house to get injured. I also had expected some questions regarding Min as the mastermind behind all the crimes to be cleared up, but it seems that the show has just left us with clues, allowing us to connect the rest of the dots in our imagination.

This episode did a lot to clarify Joon-ho’s state of mind, which was previously an enigma. We finally understand that his obsession with Hyun didn’t stem from their uncanny similarities, but that Hyun was the first person to give him a break from the monster label. Because of that, Hyun held this special place in Joon-ho’s life, and it was a powerful moment when Joon-ho confessed he wished he grew up like Hyun. I expected something more concrete for Joon-ho’s character than another round of catch me if you can, but I recognize that the writer intended to leave it as such. Now that Hyun has found his allies, Joon-ho stands alone, which is a relatively different ballgame from what this show started out as.

I do wish we got to touch more on Joon-ho’s “vigilante” movement and his 20 years with Min. It would have been fascinating to see more of the other kids he saved, but I do understand the time constraint. Although the attempted murder by that man was a little out-of-the-blue, it did work to drive home the point that Joon-ho’s methods don’t carry through his good intentions. Like Ji-an said, even if most of the kids are grateful to Joon-ho, there will be one kid who begs to differ. That possibility never hit home for Joon-ho until that attempted murder, and Min’s attack added salt to the wound.

But gah, what’s up with the fake-out of Min’s death? Given how atypical this drama is, I actually wouldn’t put it past killing off one of its best characters, although that would leave Min’s redemption untouched. I do see the left-behind envelope as Min choosing to confess to his crimes, but more so to live as Hyun’s brother, and I’m impressed with how the writer crafted Min’s decision. It would have been too neat and unrealistic if Min suddenly had an epiphany of his guilt, so it’s actually fitting that it’s the identity of Hyun’s brother that pushes him to take responsibility. At the end of the day, Hyun remains the one who can get through to Little Bro and pushes him to fight the good fight and walk the higher ground. No doubt Min isn’t fully redeemed and “normal” as of yet, but that’s precisely why Min’s decision is merely the first step onto that path. And even if we don’t see the end, we know that it’s happening.

Bromance and romance are really the two sides of the same coin, although he romance did take a back seat for this show. For good reason too, because most of the development and angst were in the brothers’ lives. Of course, the show did a good job of giving us a heroine worth rooting for, who actually had a life and career outside hugs and kisses. Ji-an was active in her unwavering faith and support of Hyun, and her overall badassery for her puny size always won me over. It makes sense that her relationship with Hyun wasn’t earth-shattering and life-changing, because in her ideal world, all she wanted to do was be together.

Despite a few minor gripes I have, I Remember You remains a very well-crafted drama. Right from the start, the tone and the story was consistent and well thought-out, and every single scene had meaning behind it. The earlier cases served as a reflection of the main characters’ own struggles, and the show did a fantastic job of highlighting how alike the characters are, yet worlds apart. Despite the overall dark tone, it was balanced with humor and character quirks that were smartly incorporated without disrupting the flow.

It’s disappointing that the ratings were so dismal for such a well-produced drama. Park Bo-gum was especially outstanding; his split-second change of expression from smiling to resentful is forever inked in my mind. He and Seo In-gook nailed every scene they had together, and all the longing, heartbreak, and adoration they had for each other hit me straight in the heart. Their story was rather far-fetched for anyone to identify with, but those two sold it so damn well.

All in all, I Remember You will go down in the books for the drama that kept me so engrossed in the whole ensemble, right down to the last sidekick. I like that the takeaway from this drama is that you always have a choice in life. The show was populated with complicated characters and equally complex criminals, and set a high bar for future psychopathic thrillers. How would I rate it? 15 points plus alpha.

part 2

Lee Joon Young has his own view of choice but he's been testing his theory with an answer in his mind already. He thinks that there are people who were born psychopaths like Min and there are people who were made in psychopaths - like himself. He tells Hyun in ep 16 how he could have turned into someone like Hyun but ultimately he's trying to justify for his actions by saying that his childhood made him who he is and that's why he's hooked on Hyun becauuse he thinks Hyun understands. But that is the same as saying that he had no choice, he was forced to be that way. Same with min, he saw Min as a born psychopath that's why he took Min away from Hyun so that Hyun could supposedly choose who he wanted to be - someone like LJY or someone totally the opposite of LJY (this is what hyun remembers the young LJY telling him in ep 16). We've seen how LJY doesnt believe Min can change, he doesnt think Hyun can take Min on. But Hyun proved him wrong, Min changed even after his 'critical' period. Everyone LJY thought he helped is one by one turning on him telling him that his theory is wrong. We are responsible for our own choices and we can make a choice.

I totally understood the way the romance was delayed, it would have been so out of place for him to think about his romance with Ji An when he was being faced with finding out who Min was and gaining his memory. He told Ji An his thoughts were complicated. In ep 16, i think one of the reasons he disappeared for a year was because of Ji An, he knew Ji An said she would wait for him but knew she would be conflicted and have a hard time. So he went away to deal with it on his own. Before he went, he went to see Ji An 3 times, it was his way of keeping his promise to Ji An to the best he could. And the 1 year when he was away from Ji An, he must have missed her alot. Remember when it was her birthday and Min mentioned it to him but Hyun at first restrained himself from going to see Ji An? He wanted to go see her but for Min's sake, he stayed. He must have repeatedly felt that way over the one year period. So when he felt his mission was finally done and Min had changed, he reappeared in front of Ji An. It was anything but casual to me. The way he looked at her, and told her he missed her ALOT (has hyun ever said that to Ji An???), it was him telling her that it wasnt only her who missed him (i can only imagine how many times Ji An went to Hyun's house so that he would show up 3 times). I saw great longing for her when he looked at her at the kiss scene. It wasnt just smiling casually, u can tell he missed her lots.

I dont see the ending as Hyun just starting a new life. He and Ji An had become real partners to go after LJY because Min was no longer a point of conflict and contradiction. Hyun never returned to Korea to capture LJY and put him in jail. He came back because he wanted answers. He wanted to know why his father thought he was a monster, he wanted to...

Continued...

look for Min, he wanted to solve the mystery behind his lost memories and in the end, he did indeed solve all those things. He found the answers, he remembered everything and reconciled with Min, Min had changed and now he and Ji An are ready together to go after LJY with a bond so strong nothing would break them apart.

I think the flow of the last 2 eps definitely had issues. Also personally i felt Leader Kang had too much screen time and i wasnt really interested in his story. But i think his story showed the different faces of evil. His father is no less evil than LJY, his actions led to others' deaths, ruined people's names but did he even feel remorse for a second? No. In a normal kdrama, you would expect this type of character to be exposed and punsihed but Leader Kang said to Ji An, exposing his crime wouldnt really be punishing him because there was no evidence and even if he got killed out of the police force, he would end up in some corporate position where he would earn more money and engage in more corruption. So Leader Kang severing the father-son relationship with him could perhaps be seen as his punishment. I find all these different depictions of evil thought provoking and reflective. In the real world, not only the serial killers are the bad guys, there are lots of silent bad guys and many times they are the ones who are worse.

Thanks Bonsookie for posting Cecilia's comment. Long, but very insightful look into what likely the writer was implying. No guarantee, of course, but this sounds plausible.

I do think the last episode suffered primarily from the rush and life shooting, rather than the writer suddenly leaving so many plot holes. No production is perfect, and IRY certainly wasn't, but close enough to have me savor over its greatness for quite a long time.

Thanks so much @ Bongsookie

That was a lovely read from Cecilia Soompi... it is so plausible I kind of believe it. It explains so much.

I like that they make the time indeterminate... how soon did Joon Yeong put on his phone again? Did Hyun see Min immediately and start planning to separate himself from Ji An immediately after that (I think so). His separation from her was the only viable choice because if she was with him, she would have asked questions about what he was doing and he would have had to remain silent or lie. He made the choice to spend unmitigated time with his brother... and Min acknowledged that... he tells the lady that hyung had spent long enough with him and should go home.... so they were in communication all that time when Min was in hiding.

The time is also indeterminate when Hyun reappeared and Min made the decision to leave the nursing home... It seemed to be about the same time. And we can guess that Joon Yeong knew all the timing too since he was in communication with his friend. So the future lies ahead again with all the choices they can make, but at least they will be together. :)

Thanks for posting this here. I thought this was already implied so I was surprised that not everybody caught this. Especially the part about Team Leader's father and why Hyun left for a year. I love the show for giving us pieces and letting us fill in the blanks because it assumes we are capable of putting these pieces together themselves, like Jian and the other characters who discovered things for themselves without having been drilled with lengthy dialogue to arrive to information. Alas, not everyone is capable of understanding everything, it seems, and it's a shame because I think it's one of the dramas many charms.

Implied is the operative word. There are a LOT of implications within this drama. For it, I love it more.

I feel like the ending is a bit rushed, this should have at least 1 more episode so things could be thoroughly explained.
But this ending is fine too. Can't OCN pick this up and have season 2?
I think Min chose to not live by the new identity and wanted to still be Hyun's little brother. He might go to the police or he could just wait till Ji An and her team proved him a murderer however long it'll take. Cue, bromance.
And if there's no season 2, why not have Seo in guk and Jang na ra in a rom com? Drama or movie won't matter.

Can’t OCN pick this up and have season 2?- great idea! And cable wouldn't care much about ratings.

@damianna

not SIG and JNR again please.... bad bad pairing. loved the drama, hated the pairing. remember KBS meant to cast JNR with LeeJinWook first so... this pairing was like a last minute combo , very bad one. Tired of the noona disturbing pairings.

thankfully, Park BG and SIG stole the whole chemistry otp jazz of the drama, bromance made up to the bad pairing.

An interesting open closure!! One that I would have wholly appreciated had they spent a little more time tightening it up in places where I was left scratching my head!! I think a vague ending was fitting for this drama, but can it be seen as too vague? Can we get a season two!? Pretty please. I guess that means I'm in two minds as to whether or not I liked it, and though I appreciated the overarching conclusion, I felt it could have been handled better in the way that we got there.

What didn't quite bode well with me is that we were left with two psychos potentially on the loose by the end, with LJH completely unscathed - he got away far too easy in my opinion. Perhaps, this is where it calls for a season 2!? His arc was an interesting one, but his resolution still left me with a big question mark, and I hate that feeling. Whilst I didn’t expect a neat pretty bow, I still wanted a resolution which felt complex and layered as opposed to rush, or just, left hanging. Or maybe I just need to give it another watch, and appreciate that it left questions hanging in the air *shrugs*

And my final gripe: Hyun, WTF were you doing for a year!?? Somebody explain to me why he felt compelled to leave and return after a year? Did he spend that time next to Min? Perhaps I missed it in the dialogue. I just felt some of the hopping around this episode didn’t really connect with me on an emotional level. Like when they killed off Min, which surprisingly I would have been fine with on a narrative front (it would have hurt, but it would have hurt so damn good). But then, the way the characters reacted to his death, seen as though Hyun believed him to have died, felt far too…emotionless? Downplayed? which was a dead giveaway that LJH had kept him alive somewhere.

It was just that period after Min’s body was taken which felt a little awkward to me. It was like, dude, your brother just died and his body taken, and you’re just sitting there taking it all in your stride. Equally, there was no trace of awareness from Ji An’s end that she knew what had transpired between Lee Hyun, LJH and Min. In fact, she was just absent from Hyun’s side during that period. It just caught me off guard, knowing how invested she was in chasing after LJH, and being there for Hyun.

Having said that, there were a lot of elements I enjoyed as part of the finale, and that alone made this a gem of a drama, from start to finish.

Love, love, LOVE that the leads came together in the end and sealed it with a kiss, and a pretty damn good one at that! Ji An is hands down, one of the most charismatically independent and ass kicking female leads to have graced the screen in a long time. Utterly refreshing. And her honesty when confronting Hyun and Min was just, brilliant. She asked all the right questions, and responded with genuine honesty too. She missed Hyun, would hate to have him go again, but would rather have him leave her side completely, then wait for him to disappear again - as the pain of waiting was just too agonising. And I loved that he picked up on all that hurt. These two were all about mutual understanding, and were always on the same page, both emotionally and to some degree, intellectually! Loved that.

The time Min and Hyun spent together was just beyond precious!! Their brotherly affections seriously made me squeal, and the platonic nature of it was captured beautifully. It certainly brought out all the right feels! Their relationship was painted as tragic from the get go, so seeing them finally get to bond, was painfully adorable! PBG was simply marvellous at expressing the conflicting nature of his inner demons. It highlighted the central theme of this show: whether one is born, or nurtured into doing evil. And for Min, though I would have been fine with his death (solely on a narrative front), I liked the fact that his closure was given in the form of leaving him with a choice, and for him to make that choice as an individual holding a moral compass. The fact that he refused to go into hiding, shows there's hope for him yet, and perhaps even led him to confess his crimes of his own accord, righting the wrongs he did. He chose to feed the inner wolf without LJH’s shadow – an apt end to the metaphor.

That montage of the purple flowers, toy car and splat of blood, perfectly depicted Min’s abducted childhood, both emotionally and physically. To think he had grown up with that one memory which perhaps nurtured his dark tendencies, and which he used as a weapon for Hyun to finally remember him was so heart crushingly tragic – seriously loved all the intricate details!

Ahh, is it too much to hope for a season 2!? Thank you so much for recapping this series, guys – it was a gem of a drama, and one that I’ll definitely be re-watching.

Hey there Growingbeautifully,

Yep, just finished reading through some of the comments! Great, I feel better knowing that Hyun most likely spent the year next to Min, feeding his good side so to speak. It was just a shame that I didn't pick that transition up from watching the episode itself. And I still feel slightly underwhelmed by Ji An's lack of awareness surrounding Min's disappearance. But hey ho, it's still a drama which delivered on many fronts!

@namedx -->-'' the way the characters reacted to his death, seen as though Hyun believed him to have died, felt far too…emotionless? Downplayed? '' way too emotionless,
I dont like soap operas or super melodramas, but Hyeon didn't seem even affected about his brother being ''murdered'' by the same guy who killed his father!... ep 16 lacked a lot. Its been almost 4 weeks and i still say it, last ep lacked a lot.
this could have been 18ep.

I popped in during the last couple of episodes expecting to be bored but the show delivered too well. ;w; I loved Wonyoung since A Hundred Year Inheritance (stop judging my parents watched it) and it's so nice to watch him shed the 'nice whiny entitled brat' facade to play a multi-layered villain. Park

Bogum's a 93er and he slayed it in this drama, I want to slide him with Jisoo and Yoo Seungho for the holy trinity of babby talents. I kind of paid attention to Seo Inguk via The King's Face but since We Do Not Talk About That Drama he never left as much of a lasting impression as he did now. I won't lie about my incredible bias to Jang Nara and she delivered greatly, convincing us about this 'stalker' character that's deeper than what is on the surface.

All in all, the show carried their message of 'are monsters created or made' very very well- and the answer is apparent with the show rounding up. 10/10, will recommend.

The absolute best of 2015! This will be so hard to top. If my drama standards are to be an indication, The Devil and Nine, it may take a few years before another drama impresses me as much as this did. From the writing to the acting, the cinematography and soundtrack, nothing was lacking. It was compelling from start to finish.

This is the most satisfying ending I have ever watched in a drama in a while. I wasn't left feeling like everything ended too perfectly or that any of the characters did a complete 180. One thing I usually hate in endings is when everyone suddenly realizes they were wrong all along and the ending makes it seem like the world suddenly became a happy place. This drama stayed true to its form and left the world they live in as realistic as it was when it started. Our characters grew so much that all of their actions in the final hour were believable. I love that. I love that I can believe in their actions and believe their motives without trying to bend reality for the sake of the drama's plot. This was so satisfying and I couldn't have asked for a better ending.

The drama once again showed the importance of environment and personal choices with Eunbok. Eunbok was lucky to have met these wonderful people who would stick by him and help him even after knowing what he has done. It's because they know he's a good person and one evil deed does not define who he is as a whole. But how many lucky Eunboks are there in this world? Not many. If LJY met even one of these people as a child, if one of them chose to help him and believe in him instead of turn on him and ostracize him, would he have turned out to be as bad as he is now?

The "death" of Min was superbly done. LJY once again showed how he is always thinking of both brothers, even at his expense. Min came to kill him and by the way his eyes would look and stare after the stab, he knew Min would live but told Hyun otherwise. He has turned Min's murderous intent to an escape for Min instead. He knows Min's concern of being a burden to Hyun because of his crimes and he knows this is Hyun's concern as well, how to deal with his brother's crimes. By "killing" Min in another murder without a body, Min would be free to take the new identity LJY gave him. Min and Hyun would be free from both of their concerns. In LJY's head, he is helping them, like he has always been helping them. Hyun hasn't told anyone that Min is alive. He disappeared until Min recovered. This way, Hyun took the out that LJY gave them. But Min now has a choice, knowing Hyun would stay with him and keep silent for him, he's faced with the same doors LJY gave Hyun when he was little - and Min took the door that would lead to Hyun. It was a choice made possible by the excellent character and plot development in the 16 episodes, and it's so satisfying to have witnessed that growth and come to the same choice with Min. Truly superb writing!

I'm so glad LJY voiced out his desire for...

... understanding to Hyun and I'm glad Hyun remembered LJY gave him a choice as a child. If only someone gave him the same choice, if he was able to live like normal kids did, would he have turned out like Hyun? He's been saving himself over and over again but all these years, no one has tried to save him yet. He helped Hyun out of the label "monster" but he had to live his whole life with it. I think that's why he chose to take new identities, to escape. But judging by how happy it makes him that Hyun remembered his real self and how he wants Hyun to "Find me", he wants his real self found and maybe, even saved, because it sounds more like a plea for help than a challenge.

I could talk about this drama for hours and I still would find something interesting to talk about. It was coherent from start to finish 10/10!

Hey there Ian,

Fabulous insight!! Makes me feel so much better about the ending, seen as though I didn't quite grasp the emotional weight of it. I like your perspective on Min being stabbed as part of Joon Young's plan all along - it actually makes a lot of sense. Leaving Min with a choice is what I liked most about the ending, but for some reason, I couldn't read too well into the final episode as a whole, at least not compared to the others, I guess that's the only thing I was hung up on. I will revisit the episode at a later point though - perhaps my perspective will change after reading all the great comments! Love Dramabeans!

You're very welcome :) LJY stabbed Min part in self-defense and part instinct. Min attacked him first, like their father attacked young LJY first back in the day. When LJY stabbed Min, the look on his face says a lot. Min is important to him and even though Min has tried to kill him, he can't harm Min. He turned Hyun's focus on him rather than on Min by telling Hyun it's a lost case even though he clearly knows it isn't. I really love that part because it shows how important Hyun and Min are to him that he cares about them even in his twisted way.

For the whole fighting/killing scene at LJY's house, I was too caught up in the shock that LJY 'killed' his beloved protege (whose attacker he'd offed out of revenge!) and trying to work out the whole time jump. Totally didn't pay enough attention to LJY's expressions there. Just watched that part again and you're right, LJY did look like he's meaningfully keeping a poker face... And it's so fitting, that he would go to such great lengths for the two boys he 'loved' so much.

Can't get over everyone's superb acting.

Editing-wise, technical blunders accounted for, the drama was not pristinely finished. But as a whole piece of pie, it was really very good. I understand where the confusion is coming from and I largely hold the editing and lack of time accountable, but I can totally see the intelligent intent in all of it despite the one point blunder in execution. So to me, it's 9.0/10.0 and that is a really high score because this drama is the drama to beat for me.

I can see why some might feel it was rushed even though I don't feel it was. I think it boils down to expectations. This drama met all of mine, even the romance was handled exactly the way I wanted it to, but that won't be the case for everyone.

So far this year, it really is on a class of its own. Some good enjoyable dramas has come out like KMHM/Healer but it's just not the same. I wonder if there will be any great dramas coming. We still have a few more months.

I agree, it is in a class of it's own. I also immensely enjoyed KMHM and Healer and respected the writing and acting. But IRY exceeds it, especially with the bromance, and the wonderful fleshing out of side characters. I cared about all the characters in this drama, whereas I can't say I did with those.

@Ian, your posts are really insightful; thanks for sharing.

I know right? Definitely in a league of its own.

2014 had a few good dramas to boot--- Misaeng was like everything to me. But still, Hello Monster has a very different take so it just doesn't compare with that either. I Remember You has its own breed and was really well-crafted.

Perhaps,
is it too much to hope that KBSWorld as the official live channel should air the Director's Cut? Minus the unfortunate effects of Jang Nara's accident and whatever force majeure the PDs suffered towards the end. I'm truly very convinced that the editing suffered. I mean we've got super awesome butterfly scenes, dock scenes, mirrored scenes---- Hah! There's sooooo much more under their sleeves, I just know it!

The BBC-like ending actually "united" two continents and some brilliant writers. I loved the ending and I could accept anything the writer had prepared for us by that time. Thorough research mostly shown in british (and some american) crime series is not very common in kdramas - I could be wrong, of course because of my limited experience in comparison to long-time audiences). This one though, with minor mistakes and simplifications, made it through poor ratings, accidents and a very, very complicated story.

@Ian, your comments (plus your mini-list) indicate a viewer who has a wide range of global entertainment projects, hence your ability to disconnect from usual kdrama norms. I think IRY really suffered from lack of open-minded audiences in SK.

Yes, yes, the symbolism of death prior to resurrection! I love the thematic consistency with religion again.

Ahhhhhhh..... I reallllllllyyy wish the PDs had at least a week more to fine tune the editing.

Agree with everyone here that the show delivered well. The plot, cast, acting, directing were excellent. However, i cant stop feeling a bit disappointed over Ji-an's recklessness. Her saying her team will catch Joon-young if he kills her was quite foolish. Isn't he famous for corpse-less murder? There won't be a single evidence to prove the murder. And also, instead of her, it should have been Hyun convincing Min for just once to turn himself in. We all know what it would have meant for both brothers. I was quite ok if our OTP didn't get a happy ending, i was more concerned for the brothers, which is quite rare! Felt something when joon-young says everyone sees him as a monster. That mirror reflection was GOLD!! I couldn't stop myself from smiling back at him when he asked Hyun to come and find him. Min's monologue was so honest and tear-jerking. Entirety of his 20yrs-waiting for his hyung. Team's support to Eun-bok was warming.
I REMEMBER YOU, YOU WILL BE MISSED, ALWAYS!!
Easier the hello, tougher the Goodbyes! I cannot bring myself to bid adieu to this gem.

The best part of this episode for me is Ji An's imagination of life where they did not meet Joon Young. I really loved that she desired to meet Hyun, along with Min. She considered Min as an inseparable part of Hyun, if Hyun is there, there has to be Min. She could just ignore him, cause she was thinking of how she would meet Hyun. I loved Ji An but after I watched that now I respect her :) :)

I have no complains with ending, if open ends are beautiful then I wont mind. But I would be really happy with an open ending of this show if the ratings were high, then I could expect a season 2.

Among the happy moment highlights, this too is the one that I love to remember. How Ji An acknowledges the possibility of Hyun still saying, "Get lost" to her, but how the little brother could have smiled so sweetly and accepted her. I love the thought that they could have grown up together, been housemates even and had friends in common to visit them. Such a sweet dream and the best part is that it is actually a future possibility.

Min and Eun Bok will get out of jail and all of them could gather in Hyun's home to celebrate. What a lovely thought!!! :D

I really liked Ji-an's "fantasy" (and not getting stuck on that they only met because LJY which would have been an awful thought) BUT I really I don't want Min to get out of jail. Eun-bok committed one murder so he should have a shorter sentence, but Min committed multiple murders and should probably jailed for life. I am happy that Hyun loves him regardless and Ji-an understands that in some way he is just someone who had an unfortunate life but that doesn't mean the rest of society has to sympathise! It would be very disconcerting if we start advocating that serial murderers be released because they tug at our heartstrings with their tragic past.

it MIGHT be JUST ME but that @fantasy was rather annoying. made no sense and totally killed the vibe imo. I didn't want out of plot-imaginations due to all the things that happened. Because LJY being part of their lives was what made this drama what is it.. so that fantasy was ...nonsense.
Plus this cop Cha character annoyed me soooo much in that ep that all seemed hypocrite and too needy when she wasnt even important in the picture. lol sorry. hated her.

Good thing, Min being alive was kept as a secret only Hyeon and LJY knew, prolly the squad only thought that lawyer Jeong Seon Ho was murdered by LJY. they never knew who 'the lawyer' was, never knew he( Min) was Hyeon's brother. so I liked that. thanks to @ian insight I totally forgot that
I just really didn't want them butting in with this LJY-Brothers deal. it was very personal imo. I dont care if they cops and had to bring justice, this wasn't a drama about korea's justice league police squad, so i never wanted them to really get in between shit they didnt even have evidence of. Specially this Jian, turning a blind eye to inside jobs but just meddling in between the Lee triplets.. LJY was the one who actually ended up making possible an 'ending' for the brothers, since he decided to let go of Min after carrying out the whole -murder without body of Lawyer JSeonHo(Min)- to lurk all these cops away and mainly to give his pupil a choice (Min)

I was very psycho-bias for the most part. I somehow believed LJY cared for the Lee Brothers genuinely, meanwhile most viewers were hating on him and Min. but what else is new.... most viewers just want a female lead and male to be making out-ending and thats about it...

Just couldn't buy Seo In Gook and Jang Nara as lovers although both are great actors. Park Bo Gum was really good in this role. I hope next time he has a lead and doesn't have to play a psycho serial killer.
Didn't like the ending either that the criminal mastermind walked away at the end. The crime team was under utilized..all they did was run around or sit in cars.
The plot wasn't very intriguing either so maybe that's why the ratings were low. Knew who the brother and the mastermind very early in the drama...so parts were draggy. I like all of the actors, but somehow it just wasn't suspenseful enough for my tastes. Better luck on their next roles.

I have never been more satisfied by the conclusion of a drama than I have been with this one. It's a great ending which leaves room for a sequel (dare I hope?) and so realistic. It's in keeping with the theme of the show. This is one drama I wished would never end. In spite of its low rating I do hope it wins awards in future, for the writing at least.

I am so glad that neither Min nor Joon Young got their comeuppance, and by that I mean spend time in jail. For them to be punished that way would've been too simplistic, life is rarely that way. In reality some criminals do go unpunished for their crimes all their lives, innocent people are locked up in prison for life for crimes they didn't commit; life is not black and white but shades of gray.

I can already see season 2 in my head of Hyeon chasing Joon Young, while hiding Min's identity from his girlfriend who thinks Min is dead, as Min has a chance to start afresh...let the hijinks begin!

Overall I loved IRY but I wasn't thrilled with the ending, it wasn't God's Gift bad but it implied a lot while delivering nothing.

Logically I can guess that Min turned himself in and is helping to catch Joon Ho. Joon Ho after some catch and mouse games was probably either caught or he died. Ji An and Hyun probably became an official couple to the shoick of their co-workers. But I don't know what exactly happened because everything is so open ended!

And that's fine if this was season 1 and they were setting up season 2 but this is a kdrama, there is no season 2! Just this emotionally unfulfilling end to what has been my favourite drama of the year.

I LOVE LOVE LOVED IT. What do I do with my mondays and tuesdays now ... (cries)

I loved almost everything about it. The romance was cute and low-key and complimented the story really nicely. The bromance - OH GOSH THE BROMANCE (SQUEALS) But what I adored most about it was that this drama's character depth reached so much deeper than other dramas that I have watched. I feel like I still don't fully understand the characters yet and I'll have to watch it again and still not completely get them. And kudos to Seo in-guk, Jang Nara, Park Bo Gum, Choi Won Young for bringing them to life!

As for the ending, I didn't know what I wanted to happen either. I feel like it wasn't the best ending that could have possibly happened, but overall, I'm satisfied with it. I'm especially happy that Min was alive and ultimately chose to live Hyun's brother instead of hiding with a new identity.

Despite the tragically low ratings, I hope this drama gets more recognition and awards that it deserves.

And a big thanks to dramallama and rejoycie for recapping this wonderful drama!! :)

Thank you for your recaps, rejoycie and dramallama! I have followed this show from start to finish, but I rarely put comments since your recaps are exactly what I wanted to say about the show. And right now, I can't really find the words to express how much I loved this finale and the open-ending. Just that, I was crying when the closing credits came in. It was beautiful.

I guess my favorite part would have to be Ji-an's "what if" moment: where she imagined how it would be if they met in a different circumstance. It was what you'd wish to happen for these characters who we loved so much. Of course, we are aware of the dark streak of some of them, but it's those backgrounds that had us understanding their complexity more.

Everyone did a fantastic job from the main characters even down to the sidekicks and guest characters. It was one hell of a great show that I will never forget. It gave you so much to think about and it challenged ideals and norms.

Likewise, I give I Remember You a 15+alpha ♥

P. S.
"It makes sense that her relationship with Hyun wasn’t earth-shattering and life-changing, because in her ideal world, all she wanted to do was be together." +1 on this comment about Ji-an. This why I loved this romance no matter how lowkey. She just wants for them to be together, nothing else matters.

P. P. S.
Bogummy ♡

Agree with everyone's rave reviews on the acting, writing, directing, etc.

Still, can someone explain why a year had to pass? Was min recovering for a whole year?? That scene made it seem like hyeon had left because he had spent "enough time with him" and then later the accomplice/friend gave him the new identity package. Or did that scene happen before the year was up and he chose to stay as min, let hyeon know and then hyeon felt OK leaving to go back?

Don't mind the open ending but this one is kind of bugging me!! Thanks!

Many thanks for recapping I Remember You (aka Hello Monster) rejoycie and dramallama. Hat's off to a job well done Seo In-Guk, Jang Na-Ra, Choi Won-Young, Lee Chun-Hee, & Park Bo-Gum. The OSTs were nice too.

No checking your brain at the door with IRY. From the beginning the foundation was laid for the subsequent philosophical questions and shades of grey to ponder on: the nature vs. nurture debate, morality (rights and wrongs), judgement (ex. falsely incriminate an employee to cover up bad press for the organization), punishment (ex. take matters into your own hands by personally dispensing it), justice (ex. do you wait on and have faith in the law even if a psychopath continues to evade capture), values, fundamental beliefs (ex. mindset of having carte blanche when it comes to rescuing children from child abuse), etc. Writer Kwon Ki-Young crafted characters that were well-rounded in personality, traits, and motives. The good with the bad from major and even minor characters was balanced out as we witnessed intentions and the outcomes from their actions.

Seo In-Guk delivered yet another memorable character for us to love. Jang Na-Ra's character Cha Ji-An has set the bar high for female cops in kdramaland. Very impressed by Park Bo-Gum as Min/Jung Sun-Ho. More Lee Chun-Hee as Kang Eun-Hyuk

Hyun & Min's Bromance (brotherly love as children & adults)...all the longing, heartbreak, and adoration of the brothers = A+ show.
Romance: As an OTP or if Hyun & Ji-An had remained as just close colleagues professionally/extremely close friends personally sharing the same objectives and purpose; it would have been fine with me either way.

@August,

your analysis and those two posts from @Bongsookie practically summarise the whole psychological plus philosophical debates of this series. You've said it all and only minor details can be added.
Psychopathy vs. Sociopathy, environment vs. DNA, IQ vs. EQ, I still can't believe a kdrama raises this kind of questions. Bravo!!
Psychiatrists fight to answer these for decades ( legendary scientific battles between behaviourists and psychoanalytic therapists - "the two wolves" were so insightful and said it all in a few words, wow...). It's true though, urban environment triggers psychotic episodes and harbours antisocial disorders like never before in human societies. Hence LJY's escape is plausible and scarey possible.

BTW, great recaps, ladies. So sad I came here so terribly late since Psychology and Sociology is my field of expertise.

I was almost ready to accept that Min is really dead but then I saw him on that hospital bed. Sobs. I was so relieved.

I'm glad the writer at least gave us this kind of ending. I'm still unhappy with JoonYeong walking freely on the streets but I know Jian and Hyun and the rest of them team will caught him one day.

The lowkey, angst-free romance is very much acceptable. I like how they carefully built their trust and just unconsciously started showing their affection. I love how they look at each other and just know.

And as for the bromance....... I want to keyboard smash and just completely spill my thoughts on how much I love those two from the time they were younger to the time they reunited. It pains me to know they experienced such traumatic incident. Hyun forgot, Min remembered. And they both suffered. And they made choices that soon defined them. But I'm still happy everything ended so well.

The side characters are not to be missed. I am glad that they're all well-written to make such a good impact on the drama.

I have so much more to say but I will stop now. Haha.

I'm sad that you're underrated. Please accept all the love I'm giving you right now. And just so you know, I will always remember you.

A bit more that I found Noteworthy

4) The wonderful use of the symbols of duality. They were so apt. I looked up 'Janus' and found this in Wikipedia... "...the god of beginnings and transitions, and thereby of gates, doors, doorways, passages and endings. He is usually depicted as having two faces, since he looks to the future and to the past."

This symbol works so well with this story. It falls in place. Min's art signature of 2 eyes, one looking up and the other looking down, of two heads/persons looking in different directions, of two doors to leave by, of 2 wolves to feed, of the window reflection of 2 Joon Yeongs who looked different from a slightly different angle.

TL Kang asked Joon Yeong, when you look into the mirror, what do you see?
- A monster or a person who is saving kids
- A false identity or being true to oneself
- Min who wants to have his brother as his everything or Min who grows up to think of his brother first
- Hyun who pities Joon Yeong but knows that he cannot be let off scot free, and Hyun who hates to be separated from his brother but lets him go
-Hyun who smiles at being hugged by Seong Joo but pretends to find fault with the team
-Ji An and Hyun who transitioned from suspicion to trust and partnership

What do we choose?
A back door to hide wrong deeds and remain a child or the front door to face the consequences and have a fresh beginning. I like that Dep Chief Kang can be juxtaposed against Min... who is the adult and who the child, irregardless of their relative ages? Min walking out the passageway leading to the front door, and leaving that whole corridor behind him was one of the nicest takes.

Whatever drama/project they'll do in the future... I'm definitely following them from now on! Just like how I always follow the PD/writer team of Queen In-Hyun's Man and they surely don't disappoint with their following dramas ("Nine" and "Three Musketeers") which are equally epic. :)

Did everyone notice the subtle references to SIG and JNR's previous dramas?

Loved this show, but I think I might still pick King of Savvy as SIG's best performance - Minsuk was just so second skin for him.

I want a season 2!!! Not really satisfied with the ending. They should put a proper security system in Hyeon and LJY house.
Anyway, this is a truly gem, the overall drama, SIG, JNR, PBG. Love this drama, and thanks for all the recaps and analysis.

What a great drama! I don't usually like creepy, but this hit just the right note of creepy with humor. And the acting was stellar on all parts. I liked all the nuances in the story and the characters. It was a complex story with complex characters, and even allowed the twisted logic of the creeps. Ji An joins the ranks of competent female characters which is growing and much appreciated. And for once, they showed competent cops who actually know what they are doing, rather than the usual supposedly competent but repeatedly do stupid things. They could have strengthened the final round with injured Min and his choice by adding more detail, but overall I liked the thread of giving him a choice. This was essentially what Major Creep told Hyun, so it tied up the story nicely. And I loved the bounce in Min's step as he walked out the door. Great drama all around.

@hwaiting
At least it is not too far from the reality of the drama since at the end, Myung Woo opened his arms expecting a hug (or to hug) but was rejected LOL! They could be buddies in another sense... he was the only one Hyun was convinced was simple but truthful and honest. He had no suspicions regarding Myung Woo.

thanx for the recap :)

excellent drama!

like you i wasnt sure what i want as an ending, 16 ep simply not enough for a full closure ending.

i am assuming the one year time jump was the time hyun need to find min or what happened to his corpse. as he found min, he went back to the team to continue his search for joon ho.

i love it.

of all the crimes, one i find over reaching, how joon ho managed to kill 13 adults in one night and got rid off the bodies.

I really loved this drama, but the end left me disappointed, because seemed like the writer was giving a free/pity card to all killers the drama had. Even the keyboard cop guy who killed was pitied by his co-workers.

Things I disliked about the drama :

So unlike most people, I did not think Min was cute (the actor is cute but the character is not) and I didn't pity him, he killed people, and showed no remorse over it. So his scenes with Hyun left me cold because I couldn't enjoy the bromance knowing Hyun was covering for his Brother's crimes.

When I saw that Min was still alive, I was glad he was in a mental(?) clinic getting help , but then Hyun disappointed me because he was trusting that woman who helps LJY, AND gave the chance for Min walk free with a new id, even though he knows Min killed people and was dangerous. I was like wth. I get he is your brother but no, just no.

Hyun is not a killer, it was Legitimate defense, and what a stupid cop and father would leave a gun around kids.

The other thing that disappointed me was: Hyun thinking he is that great to leave LJY free every freaking time. If he really wanted he could arrest him, but no - he just had talks with the man who murdered his father, CJA's father and other people. When Hyun could, he did not arrest LJY, he let LJY go away because he also had to arrest Min.

He decided he'll catch LJY one day, after giving Min a new start. But while he plays hide and seek with LJY, LJY might kill more people.

I loved the kiss, but it was a bit random, he should kiss her before disappearing...

--------------------

Also, can I say how much I love CJA??

Her character was so great, not a useless cop like most of dramas, she was really smart, and she fought with all she could, even though it was a lost fight against her opponents who were much more stronger.

Also CJA was pacient and understood Hyun well. I really liked it. She also kissed first hah!

About her being careless about facing LJY, well could you help it? The guy killed her father and was provoking her.

@ u entitled to your opinion but oh my monster, you merely liked the lamest shit thrown in the drama. i guess you wont be rewatching this drama, because what u liked is like 15% of it, you missed on the whole psychopaths insight , the story was revolving around Lee JYoung, Min and Hyeon. the wolfes, it would have been incredible lame and more unsatisfying to see some secondary squad getting LJY and Min in jail just because they were killers (bad guys in a drama) and they were -bad- but not in the same way -bad- guys in dramas are portrayed in typical female-marries-male-lead story ones.
This story was NOT about Jian and her stalking iffy dry relationship with Hyeon. People just need to grasp that, if you are this actress bias, well deal with the fact her role was incredible secondary almost a 4th wheel and there is nothing wrong with male actors taking the thunder from the -female- co star.

''Hello monster'' should knock some sense to your head.

Thanks for the recap. I had been waiting for it so that I could rant about how much I loved the show.

This is only my second time commenting on this forum, and both have been for I Remember You! I am comparatively new to Kdrama land but in this short span of time I have come to love everything about it.

I used to wait every week, with baited breath, for eng subs to come out and then again for these precious recaps, beacause I just had to confirm that other people are enjoying this show as much as I was and I really loved everyone squealing about every episode. The in- depth comments were another thing I always looked forward to.

This show is the perfect mix of everything I could ever demand of a mystery/thriller. The subtle romance, the awesome bromance, the perfect acting and writing! The only thing which I wondered was whether anyone in reality can sit about calmly talking to a serial killer who has killed their father(I am talking about both Hyun and Cha Ji An here). But, I guess the show is not necessarily portraying reality. I cried in the last episode, not beacause of anything in particular (though Min seemingly dying was really painful), but beacause I wanted more of this show and I knew I won't get more. But as the writers left everything so open ended, perhaps we can hope for a season 2? Or not?

Seo in Guk has been one of my favorites since Answer Me 1997 but he truly flowered in this show. Park Bo Gum was a revelation (I am definitely looking forward to his next role in Reply 1988). Jang Nara has never gone wrong, and it seems, she never ever will :). Choi Won Young might just be the most sinister actor ever!! Plus, all other actors did superb jobs!

My super thanks to Rejoycie and all the commentators here. You guys truly helped watching this show even more wonderful and fulfilling.

Ill give this show 10000 + alpha :P

You know it's weird when I first saw this episode my initial reaction was of anger and disappointment. Then I calmed down and realized I actually really liked the ending and that it's really very fitting for this drama.

Can Ji-an just become a Planeswalker and be the heroine in every drama from now on?

@Sajen

My initial reaction was also quite different from my feelings now. I first watched it raw and was puzzled and under-whelmed. I realised of course that a lot was lost as I had no subs. Then I watched it twice with subs, slowly and finally got it and was soooo pleased with it. Yes it was fitting... so appropriate, so possible and therefore more real. Best of all, full of hope and with a future to look forward to.

I like how the writer has taken pains to have most of the questions answered. I believe he did not leave any huge plot hole but gave us Viewers enough hints, action and explanations that brought us along with the story. Such respect! I cannot appreciate this enough. :)

For such a good drama, the ending lacked a little punch. Then again, I'm not disappointed or anything.

I became a fan of SIG and PBG after this drama. Still, not so sure about watching Reply 88 since I don't know the other leads. I do wish that it had been 2002 instead of 1988 though. They could've gotten JNR to cameo and our leads will have all appeared in the reply series.

Also, anyone else think that Ji-an's imagination was super cute?

I was in a state of denial for a while and refused to watched the ending because I didn't want it all to end.

God, the things the writers had to accomplished within 16 episodes, the complex characters and intricate plot details to explain in 16 episodes. So many stories squashed into 16 episodes. They did it awesomely. Sure, there are things that fell short, but compared to ALL the dramas I've dropped this month alone for lack of consistency and abysmal characterization, this series was the BOMB. I loved it.

Thank you writers, thank you recappers and subtitlers. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. There are no words.

What a joyful journey this has been. This drama will be sorely missed. I was never one to like thrillers and crime-shows but this bromance is totally my favourite bromance ever! It beats Seo In-gook's romance in Answer Me 1997 too XD
Min and Hyun were phenomenal, all their scenes together brought on epic feels!!
It is a pity that this drama had such low ratings despite its excellence, the actors and writer deserve a big applause for this great show

Didn't think I'd be in love with this drama, since my pick usually falls for romcoms, but I Remember You is soooooo goooood now I'm still having severe withdrawal syndrome. 15 plus alpha indeed.

Anyway, regarding Ji-an's fantasy of alternate reality.. the way the team stops by the house and brings food, I feel like it is a housewarming party and Ji-an and Hyun just got married. Lol, a fangirl can dream, right?

And the kiss, though we technically only got one throughout the series, it paid off our thirst for the romance. "...her lips are definitely working," or you know, I must say both hers and his are.

This recap's comment is hilarious. Thank you for the recaps, rejoycie & dramallama!

This show is a challenging story/kdrama..it was really surprising story a twist of different kind. It was a warmhearted story of love, life struggles not only as family but with society. This reflects real circumstances in the real world.
Its a story that you'll never want to miss any episode. The story lines was so awesome. It will make you think 2 different opinion on what will be the next episode. Its a non-stop suspense and the relation of each case with the 3 main conspirator of each case.
Totally awesome in all aspects.
All thumbs up to cast and crew plus the behind scene staff..
TOTALLY AWESOME..
Thanks for a well done kdrama.
Hopefully there'll be more story that is so interesting to watch not because of the actors but mainly because of the story.

Also major props to Jang Nara for her action scenes and whoever choreographed them. Seo in Guk remains one of my favorite actors and I'm happy to become a new fan of Park Bo Gum and Choi Won Young. Phenomenal cast and phenomenal writing (except for Min's almost death ; __ ;). How awesome would it be if Min became an advisor for the team while serving time in a second season? Kinda like White Collar?

Thank you writer-nim for this gem of a show. I was cautiously optimistic from the start when this show grabbed my heart and thrilled me with each new episode. And by episode 10, I knew that this show would be good all the way through.

Rarely do you get such a wonderful combination of script, actors and production, and I Remember You is one of those few K-drama classics that I know would still be enjoyable years later.

I am so thankful KBS allowed this show to develop according to the writer's vision, instead of doing a quick fix with the ratings, which under normal circumstances, would lead to a disjointed, half-baked story.

i admit i was a little underwhelmed by this last episode when i watched it, because i do feel like the execution could've been a bit smoother?? idk, from the moment min "disappeared", i started getting confused with the timeline and felt like the story was trying to cover too much ground with too little time. but still, i'm happy with the ending!! ji-an's fantasy about them all meeting as children without lee joon-young was so lovely, but so heartbreaking. that is the beginning that i ache for them to have, but of course, no-one can change their past. and the great thing about this drama is that it at least gave each of them the choice to make their futures better instead.

i can't believe i love this drama so much now, given that i actually found the first few episodes pretty boring. it's one of the few dramas that have actually made me think about morality questions on a visceral level, instead of just a cerebral level, if that makes sense. i didn't just /see/ the conflict and the grey areas - i very vividly /felt/ them, and honestly struggled with and questioned my own morals there for a while. also, i love the final message - that ultimately, we all have the choice to feed the good wolf. so great. :')

(also, i'm going to miss the hyun/min bromance so muchhhhh cries)
