happy friday!
problem of the day: what would you do with a friend who does cool things, but leaves everything to the last moment and then relies on you to save him? I can´t decide whether to have mercy and take part in it or let him finally learn his lesson. Actually I might just go and help and then give him a good beating. On one hand I am someone who is not capable of not helping when I do have the time and ability, on the other hand GAWD! you just DON´t call someone 2 days before the event and say you need a couple dozen movie props by sunday! infuriating, innit?
on the other hand it sounds so bizarre and interesting that I am just very curious.

I watched bits and pieces this week, of Manhole, Criminal minds etc but had no time to finish any episodes. except School. btw school started today in my country what about yours?

also applied for a new position but got the dreaded sentence on the interview (inside the museum but different tasks).... that if they give that job to me, I wont be making tours and doing wat I do now EXCUSE ME am I in house arrest that cannot be a proper reason to not let me try new things. super disgusting attitude. I even thought before they might say it and decided I dont want to work here any more if this is what they go by slavery was abolished here in 1819 after all.

I think I´d rather become a guerilla activist and revolutionary.

Tell him it's the last time you're helping him and if he does it again he can just ask someone else.

School didn't start smoothly where I live. There's less employees in pre-school so some schools are not open and in those who are open the teachers struggle to keep an eye on kids. My classes (I'm in college) started this week but since I'm going to study abroad my classes will start in October.

Agh you better find a job in an other museum.

I think it's important to establish boundaries with people when you begin the relationship. You should never make excuses for someone and think after they've inconvenienced you 3, 5, 7 times they'll snap out of it. You need to tell them they "did wrong and should reflect" as soon as they start flaking. Like the first time they space you should demand an apology but let it go when they do. If they go into "It's not really my fault and I'm sorry if for some reason you're upset, drama queen" then DROP THEM. If it's just an honest mistake and they own it then it's fine. But if they do it again then it shows there's a pattern there and if they're not capable of changing well, you have to live with it or cut them loose.

I think in this particular case since it's gone on a while I'd take the tack of saying something like, "This is not the first time I've had to bail you out. And I'm sorry I haven't made it clear before but this REALLY is a problem for me. So this is absolutely the last time I do a bail out, I am done after this. Now, if you'd like some help getting better about not having it all go kaplooey at the last minute as your friend I am here for you. But no more last minute saves."

Hi Beanies !

I'm used to dress up for a tropical weather so I don't know what's the most comfortable and warmest clothes and textiles to wear for fall and winter. I looked up a few sites but I'm a bit lost. Can you give me some advice ?

I finished Mars (yeah !) and The Woman Who Still Wants To Get Married.
Why don't we have more of these kind of dramas ? Mars is about psychology, mental issues, suicide, sexual abuse and mature romance. TWWSWTG has a mature romance too, a beautiful female friendship with relatable women and portrays women's issues in their thirties.
Do we have to wait for the time-slip dramas trend to die for them to be produced again ?

Happy Friday :D

I totally love Mars and Black & White!! Vic Zhou rocked the roles and his figure in the Mars painting looks very sacred and really beautiful.

My another Vic's drama favorite is Wish To See You. I like his presentation as an eccentric novel writer who is facing writer's block.

I also came from tropical country and when I studied abroad before, I was a bit lost like you as well. I don't really know the kind of materials or textiles for Fall and Winter because most of the time, I just felt the materials and tried on if it's comfortable when I bought a Fall or Winter coat. It's more like I just went with what they offered at stores. But I remember wearing wool jacket for Fall and I wore North Face and Superdry winter jackets. Both brands' jackets kept me warm. At home, when you wanna keep your electricity/gas cost from heater during winter, it's advisable to wear hoodie or sweater to sleep.

If you're asking about fall/winter in northern climates like the US? It's important to LAYER. Layering clothes lets you adjust based on how cold it is. Especially in the northern US where we get snow in winter, you do not wear a t-shirt and then just 1 heavy jacket over that. I frequently wear a t-shirt, dress shirt, sweater or sweatshirt, and then finally my actual winter jacket during the coldest parts of winter. Part of this is about creating layers of insulation, part is about wicking the moisture of your sweat away from, part of it is about actually needing multiple layers to block piercing freezing wind when it's well below freezing. For pants you can wear leggings or sweatpants with regular pants over (or during a commute maybe put sweatpants or ski pants over regular pants). Please keep in mind that if cotton fabric gets wet it has NO thermal blocking properties so you're basically wearing nothing.

For fall a nice light jacket over a hoodie over a soft shirt is often good. Bluejeans are enough, or a skirt + leggings is often enough depending on how sensitive you are.

I had a friend move here from Australia and she was confident her sheepskin jacket would be enough and she was completely overwhelmed by the winters.

I meant in Europe. I thought about layers too. Cotton is definitely a no, that one I already experienced it once. Never again.

I was like your friend when I was in Germany in June. The weather was not that hot and I brought "thick" jackets. I caught a cold in the first days so this time I will be more careful.

I would support layering. Better of its natural fibers like cotton for lower layers (vests, shirts) then wool or other warmer clothes. The jacket can then be a normal winter or autumn jacket. That way you can take off layers when warmer in doors and use the layers to insulate heat when outdoors

I did Search & Rescue in High School and it was drilled into us that "Cotton kills" (because it doesn't dry once it gets wet).

Gosh I have a few clothes with cotton fabric. I guess in tropical weather it isn't as dangerous since they don't get wet a lot.

Cotton is FINE for normal around town types of activities. Maybe if you're going hiking and might fall in the water worry about it. Otherwise, it does not kill!

I'm from Canada and my preferred fall/winter textiles are cotton and wool for inner layers and technical fabrics listed as wind/waterproof-breathable for outer layers. (Also denim. Jeans are nice for cool weather fall days; I have rain pants and snow pants to go overtop for cold winter days but you may not need such layers depending on where you are and what you do).

For inner layers, breathability is important. I like cotton because with proper layering, it will keep you warm in the cool outdoors, but let you cool off quickly in the hot indoors.

Key to being warm are your extremities: a good hat, footwear, mittens and scarf can make a big difference, and let a fall outfit transition to a winter one pretty well. If you are going in and out of doors during the winter and don't have a chance to change footwear, I recommend a leather boot with a wool/fleece interior. Look for something lightweight and breathable, as how hot your feet are indoors will make a big difference between being comfortable and overheating.

For jackets, you can look into waterproof/windproof "shells" that don't have insulation, and this can make a decent three-season jacket that can be layers with fleece, or wool sweaters in the winter or worn alone for rain protection in the warmer months.

1

It does dry, but it can soak up more water so takes longer. That "cotton kills" thing is mostly a myth - I grew up in the mountains where it could get down to 0 and never had an issue. The main thing is to not get wet.

To be honest, it was a great joke among us (like our phrase to say for everything) – but that was at boarding school as a 16 year old.

But the first search we went out on, the people that were lost (an elderly couple on a short walk in their backyard mountains in sub-zero temperatures) did die because of hypothermia. :-(

0

Just don't do what I do when I first moved to a cold climate and only wore a blue jean jack, a sweater, and a mini skirt with tights and decided to walk three miles to a grocery store in below freezing weather...
Layers are your friends, undershirt, shirt, sweater and heavy jacket is my norm in the winter, and with THICK tights (they are the best) or leggings you can still wear the mini skirt ;)
But heels are awful on ice, so invest in good boots that are appropriate in multiple situations, or that are easy to swap out when you get to your destination.

You might want to hold off and just get a few things, then see how you feel and what others who live in your climate suggest. They won't run out of winter boots in October, but what you know about what you need might change by then! Get a few light sweaters and long-sleeve shirts, some undershirts, and a fall jacket... but hold off on other things.

Exactly!

And I still don't understand why the Japanese version casted Fujigaya among all available actors. After Vic's strong version as Ling (both in visual and acting), Fujigaya seems lacking an impactful punch. It makes me hard to picture him as characters who supposed to look dangerous as well as god-like beauty. I haven't watched Japanese version because of the reason. Can anyone tell me whether it is actually good??

0

@sangmaharani
I watched the Japanese version first and it's lacking compared the Taiwanese version. It's set in highschool and everything is rushed, even some storylines because there's not enough episodes. There's a movie to conclude the drama but I didn't watch it.

I vote for scarves as among your new best friends! Keeping my neck warm with a nice big, usually wool fabric or knit, scarf enables me to run around in winter wearing layers and a cute sweater (and gloves) rather than a coat except on the coldest days. You can use the scarf as a hood as well. Silk or Rayon/blend scarves work almost as well and can also be worn before it gets cold.
A lot of people use silk thermal underwear.

I would suggest finding out what the coldest temperatures are in the country you are going to.

For autumn, you can do the layering but if you need to get a winter coat, I'd recommend outdoors stores as they will have coats for different kind of temperatures and store staff will know much better what to recommend (not everything that looks thick is for really cold temperatures).

Remember you can also layer gloves (thinner, but warm ones) with mitts (snow/wind proof ones). That's helpful particularly if you cycle in very cold, wet weather.

Don't be shy to ask new friends/acquaintances for help either.

wool is one of the best materials for colder weather to keep warm :)
also, get a good fleece sweater, have a thick one in basic color and i always layer it under my fall/spring jacket for the inbetween weather where its too warm to wear your thick winter jacket but too cold to not wear a sweater
and layers! (including good wool/nylon/fleece thights), layering helps to stop the chill pretty well
most wintershoes have a lining of wool/fleece inside to kepe your feet warm, if not, invest in good thick socks :)
hope this helps!

I would say Merino- a super fine wool from a specific breed of sheep, famous because it's light and fine so that it can be worn in layers and under things, and doesn't scratch- but I don't know if it's made it to Europe yet, or if it's still just a New Zealand thing. You could search for it though I guess.
Otherwise, wool is your best friend.
Hats- 80% of your head comes off your head, so keep that warm, and woolen singlets- wool next to your skin will keep you warmer than any number of cotton or poly layers you can heap on.

Required fields are marked *

Merino can be expensive, and you have to watch it - have seen some ads where the fine print says something like "10% Merino wool". It should be 90% or 100% (depending on the cross fiber). And most that I have seen is not machine washable.

Merino is machine washable but you should use a wool wash detergent to be nice to it.
Wouldn't be surprised if it freaking expensive everywhere outside of NZ since wool is still one of our biggest exports.
You can get cheap 100% merino's here but again, I don't know what the European market is like *shrugs*

Now I get why every single drama site out there recommends it.

However I got 2 pet pieves :
1. Are we really supposed to believe she had no leg hair. I get appointments once a month about it, so that to me seems science fiction :P
2. Why is every single thing dramatic. Like every single conversation.
Thank God for SJK's character or I would drown in a serious world :D

And the best part of the drama :
JYJ's Found You, it is one of the best ending songs, and I don't even like JYJ ..

Open Thread week 30! Welcome to Friday, Beanies! We’re cooking with Kelvins today! Got a phone call on the way in today that there was already an emergency, so although I’m firing on all cylinders, my computer is just waking up! School has started and a whole new schedule has taken over my life, but I would much rather have some structure than none, but it has put a bit of a crimp in drama-watching.

I’m half-way through White Christmas and I really like the indie feel of this drama. It reminds me of the American movie “Fargo,” with the scenery and all, but the boys are so much more engaging to look at ;). They are all impressing me with their acting in this. I can’t believe this was their first drama (for most of them)! And for those who don’t know (but how could you not know?) Kim Woo Bin, Lee Soo Hyuk, Kim Young Kwang, Hon Jong Hyun, and Sung Joon are the players in this. And by “players,” I mean actors :). Although, “players” might be appropriate too.

And we’re still watching “The King Loves” and the costuming and cinematography is still so engrossing. Siwan’s violet, purple, and royal blue robe this last week was stunning against the provincial backdrop at the gravesite. Thank you, show, for giving me more scenery to ogle over!

My hubby started Let’s Eat and Dae Young is such a slob this time!!! I couldn’t believe it was the same character as in Let’s Eat 2. I’m sure he matures a bit during this. My neighbor, who is 21 years old and travels constantly, is going to Korea next week and I’ve ordered him to watch both of these on the plane on his way there so he has a clue about what he should eat! Oh, to be 21 with disposable income. I never knew what that was like. So, I’ll be living vicariously through him these next couple weeks!

So, I gave my husband my phone to read an e-mail last night and went to the next room to do something…

Me: *from the other room* Hey, I can’t find my phone!

Hubby: That’s because you just gave it to me, you dork.

Me: I’m totally going to have Alzheimer’s dementia one day and you’ll have to take care of me.

Hubby: No, I’ll just leave you.

Me: As long as you put me on a plane to Korea and drop me on Gong Yoo’s doorstep before you do, I won’t complain.

Hubby: Actually, I’ll just get you a blow up doll and tell it’s him, you won’t know the difference.

Me: But, he won’t talk to me! That’s what I want, his syrupy voice telling me it will all be okay.

Hubby: Shhhh, he’s sleeping, honey.

Me: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, hysterically, as per usual.

Moral of the story: I pray that if I’m demented, I’ll still enjoy kdramas.

2nd moral: I’m very happy with my eclectic kdrama choices right now.

3rd moral: It’s short and sweet today—have a great Labor Day weekend, American Beanies, and a great weekend, everyone else!

Hello Beanies!
Remember about a month ago, I talked about interviews and job hunting? Well I just got a good news few days ago that I got a job offer from a pretty well-established company! I'm so excited for it because this is my first ever full-time job though the salary is pretty average for a fresh grad, but I'm pretty much doing what I studied in college, so I'm not complaining. The only bad thing about the job offer is that I'll be busy with real life (☹️) and I might not be as active as I'm right now on DB. Anway, my first day of working will be in mid-Sept (yess, so soon ?), so I'll need to reduce a bit with the number of dramas that I'm watching a week. But I know for sure that the only upcoming dramas that I look forward to is Temperature of Love and While You're Sleeping. Who would wanna miss all the hot oppas in both dramas? I know I won't! ?

Btw this job offer is the company that I went for an interview last two weeks on Monday. @ally-le, thank you so much for your prayers! And thank you for other beanies as well who gave me support and wished me good luck! ??

After reading your comment, I've only realized that I don't really have any upcoming drama that I dearly want to watch. I have While You Were Sleeping on my list too but it's not really my priority

You know.. when you were waiting for a drama premiere excitedly, you feel happy even when you only read the drama title somewhere in the internet.. I don't get those exciting feelings for any upcoming drama

OMG, what should I do? I think I'll have a drama slump moment for the next few months T.T

I totally get what you mean. I'd been waiting for While You're Sleeping for months since they announced the confirmed casts. I did started to lose interest, but I always remind myself that it's Lee Jong Suk's drama! I'd never missed any of his new dramas after School 2013. Plus, that drama has other oppas/dongsaeng that I like as well (hello, Jung Hae In, Lee Sang Yeob, Shin Jae Ha and Kim Min Jae ?). As for Temperature of Love, all the main leads are the one I love, so I won't miss that drama as well.

Maybe your excitement will come once the drama has premiered its first episode. Maybe you can try watch the first two episodes first to avoid drama slump.

Second week of marathoning School 2017 and I almost caught up with all existing episodes.

I totally adore the show and liking it a lot more than 2015 (which was quite makjang-ish), however it doesn't engage me as much as Sassy Go Go, I think, because it lacks one major issue that the characters are trying to achieve. In SGG they strive to keep their room and then the second half focuses on preparing for the cheerleader competition. While S17's major plot floats around X but no major aim - but, for example when the episodes centered around Kim Hee Chan and his bullying issue, time flies by because I want to see him go down (and the boys doing whatever they can to protect the girls). Not to say the show is not good, just saying that not all episodes make me want to click Next as soon as the last one ends.

One thing that makes me keep watching the show though is the OTP, aren't they the cutest! They are big contender for OTP of the Year for me after Park Seo Joon - Kim Ji Won. I got so bored when the show dwells into the teacher's relationships (and granted, lots of them are for PPL only) or Dae Hwi and his annoying girlfriend (I don't know if it's the actress or the character but I can't stand how entitled she acts to everything, both here and in Strong Woman DBS). Please just bring Tae Swoon back to my screen!

Kim Jung Hyun shines in this drama and I hope his career takes off after this because I want to see more of him! I really like it when an actor uses all of his body to act (arms, legs, or even small things like eye twitch, glare, or gulp) and owns the character.

I read that show has no-kiss policy somewhere on DB comment section, please tell me it's not true? You tease us all these time, even from early episodes, with swoony eyes, close distances, skinskip and burning chemistry but there won't be no kisses to seal the deal?

5

Required fields are marked *

No-kiss policy ? That's too cruel. I mean why are they teasing us when it's going to happen ? Tae Swoon must become Tae Kiss !

1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Wait, there's a no kiss policy? Oh, maybe because they are portraying teenagers? I want a Tae Kiss too! Maybe they can do a time skip at the end, show us them in college or at a high school reunion, and we can have our Tae Kiss to Tae Swoon over ~

1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I am the type who don't hanker for kisses in a drama. Possibly because there are more misses than hits.

There has indeed been the usual clamoring for a kiss in Swoon 2017 but I am a bit apprehensive seeing how Teacher Shim's kiss went. If it's like that, I rather have no kiss than a "chaste" kiss.

More than all these, Kim Jung Hyun has been knocking it out of the park in his role as Tae Swoon that I got more out of this OTP than any others, with or without a kiss.

I picked up the expanded Viki for Into the World Again (aka Two Worlds Connected) and Distortion (aka Falsify). I've only been watching the first one so far since the subs are being caught up. That and Strongest Deliveryman which has turned out to be SO GOOD even though it's not really about much more than the lives of these very interesting character. I really like the "bad" guy he needs a hug.

That's what a 'slice of life drama' is about. There is a plot there though, at least it seems to be building, i.e. big money v little guy, and mom & pop stores struggling to survive in an age of big chains. I believe that they'll be building on this and more as they go on.

I realized that shows like The King Loves brings on very heated discussions and angry comments because viewers are split into two camps. It's kind of like the Reply series except that for Reply, the outcome can be anybody's guess until the very end. In TKL, viewers get disappointed and angry even whenever the romance veers to the other camp to the extent of dropping the show. I wonder if it's smart of the writer to show the end game at this stage or was it highlighted that there will be a twist at the very end?

Required fields are marked *

I heard the Korean audience is getting all worked up about the likely Rin/San pairing, but it seems like it's been building up to that from the beginning. I think they should have promoted it more that way, but I'm sad that people may leave the show because of it.

The actors did say there was a twist coming up, but I hope it's consistent with the characters and story so far!

Required fields are marked *

I like Rin-San pairing but I'm also fine if it doesn't turn out that way as long as it makes sense. I know I'm in the minority because I can watch Reply and not be in any camp.

It can be fun to guess the outcome but not when a shipping war breaks out.

Required fields are marked *

I just hope that their version of a twist is the originally presumed "second lead" getting the girl . I don't know about the content that's being shown in other versions, but what I've been shown tends to skew towards my bias, Rin/San

1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I wonder what kind of twist ? At this point, I think that San loves Rin. I think it would be quite a challenge to change her heart towards Won. However in order to save Rin, she might go for Won. San and Rin are masters of self sacrifices. But again, WonSan shippers would disagree with my opinion.

Hello beanies!

I'm currently watching Good Doctor (currently on ep 3) for the first time. I find it weird how Kimura Taro and Lee Kang To speak to each other, full of warmth and love. Lol. It's weird how Abe is also in the pediatrics dept. Haha!

But kidding aside, I find Good Doctor to be such a good drama, so far. It isn't difficult to feel for Shi On. (It certainly helps that Joo Won is very much a capable actor).

~

Anyway, on another topic, I am currently unable to watch my ongoing dramas (The King Loves and Save Me). Darn, the internet connection is so damn slow. ? On the brighter side, this allowed me to pay attention to the old kdramas I have saved on my hard drive.

That is all, haha. ? have a nice day/night y'all!!

I enjoyed watching Good Doctor. Joowon was fantastic in it. Probably my favourite role of his that I have seen so far.

I saw that they are remaking it USA and it is going to be broadcast in Canada as well at the end of September. I am very curious to see how they adapt it to the North American audience.
Plus Freddie Highmore is going to be the lead!! I am really excited to see his interpretation! I love him as Norman Bates and I think he is a perfect fit for the role (although it will always belong to Joowon).

Hi Everyone!

I hope you are all doing well today. ...... September already! I can't believe it. ...... Dealing with an unbearable heat wave!  Absolutely sweltering and uncomfortable. ?...... My complaints and discomfort, however, pale in comparison to the situation of the people who were affected by the hurricane in the gulf states. My thoughts are with them.

This week:

Falsify - Up to ep 5. I really like this ..... and interestingly, I'm liking the fact that there are a lot of details to keep track of.  You have to pay attention.  Between the details, conversations and multiple flashbacks, I can see how it would be easy to lose track of things.

Live Up to Your Name - I had really, really missed Kim Nam-gil so I'm really glad he's appearing in this drama.  I'm absolutely loving him in this role! ....... The only issue is that it's getting increasingly difficult to find the episodes! As a result, I'm  behind.  This past week the viewasian.com site kept on having weird warning notices pop-up making you think something is wrong. Uh oh!

That's all for now. ...... To all the Beanies who celebrate the holiday, have a great Labor Day on Monday.

Take care everyone and have a great Friday!

I just finished marathoning through "Victoria" season 1, and it was so good! I look forward to season 2, and hopefully it will be good and I hope that the story will wrap up (just because I am afraid that if they make many seasons, the story will start to drag and lose that spark that makes it good).

I don't watch GOT because I'm not a fan of gratuitous violence and nudity. I just find the whole premise kind of ridiculous with dragons and all.

As for Outlander, I don't know I'm kind of hesitating with this show. I know it is R-rated, but if it is gory then I can't watch it.

I do want to checkout Poldark, and I've already watched a few eps of it. However I read some reviews for season 2 which are making me hesitate, because he will cheat.

How did Jackson win you're heart? For me it was the variety shows. Where he's super sweet, kind, thoughtful, brash, funny, loud, brazen, sensitive and hardworking. It's so tough for him to have haters because he cares so much. He's got some success with his solo debut so I hope it's helping him.
Anyways I hope you feel less cringey now that I've written this reply. hahahah

@toramona Hi!! First we go crazy over Park Seo Joon, (I still remember ur OT to my post) then now Wang Kong, soul sister or what ??! *KYAA

I first saw him in Happy Together (2014), I fall in love fast & hard, his deep husky voice, almond eyes, funny, don't give a damn attitude, & the overly swag he exudes. I dont know who is he nor GOT7. But 1thing I know for sure from his face structure, he isn't Korean.

2nd meeting : Running Man 7vs100 guests. There are 100 celebs there, but he scene stealed everybody in studios! Jackson's super hot handsome face, his snarky line and his swaggy high five-ing his friend's jump flip ?? win me over lmao.

But I never got chance to google him until this year. I saw him in WI-2x faster Hard Carry , and then the rest in rock & roll story.......Roommates, Celeb Bro, Hit Maker, Law of Jungle, All GOT7 music bank, Weekly Idol again, I can't stop. I broke repeat button for Papillon !

All ur desrcp about him is so right to the bone! And can u imagine Jackson's Line? he befriends with so many celebs!

Btw, hv u watched a chinese version (I guess) of SMTM, one contestant sing Papillon with Jackson live! He changes the lyrics fit into chinese & I think is super better than his english lyrics !

His everything is attractive. Ahh I have to catch up and watch everything he's in. The problem is I get caught up rewatching things I've already seen him in. Oooo like Roommates, celeb bro, music videos, behind the scenes and GOT7 variety appearances. He's such a subtle nuance person while also being an extrovert. I really want to watch more of his Chinese appearances. I love watching him speak in any language. He puts a different flair into each language. His newer appearances he's being trying to tone it down and have the other members step up and I think he also wants to be taken more seriously. But I love Jackson either way. He really puts his all into everything he does. Plus I actually love GOT7 because his sweet affection for them and their affection for him.
Oh are you talking about the GAI x Jackson performance? Because damm he killed it. ❤️ Also how can his dancing keep getting better? ??

Yea Gai x Wang Jia Er perfomance! ( his Chinese character "Jia" is the same "Jia" with mine lmao. U understand chinese as well? ^^

Yes, I know Mark is visual, but nobody mention Jackson as visual?? His visual is striking! I think he is OCD perfectionist , he wants to be extremly well in everything he loves, no wonder his dance is getting better.

I dont' know 3rd generation group tbh, since I'm living in 2nd-G wastedly ?, but GOT7 is the only group I can remember the name & face due to too many clips I watched for Jackson, & come to like Yugyeom (face-swag-dance) and Bambam (sassy feminim, 3rd generation of Key & Jo Kwon) . Lmao.

Now can we pray for WangKong guests in 2D1N please? Haha.

Honestly, we put Jackson, Heenim, Kwang Hee, John Park, Dindin, Henry, Kyuhun & JJY in 1 show it will be the end of the world haha. The most weirdo wacky 6D people ever. Heenim new chocoball.

Here's one that I know has potential for cliches: guy and girl meet freshman year of college, become close friends, but never consider the other romantically. Flash forward to mid twenties, when they are both hard working, and guy out of the blue tells the girl they have talk about the fact that they aren't dating. Guy starts up unnecessary drama, making girl realize she does like him, only to be rejected when he states "I was only making sure we were on the same page, since I thought you might like me, but I don't think us together is a good plan."
Now, I think this is a great beginning to a drama, where this long term guy friend turns out to be the second lead that the main girl likes at the beginning, but he takes their friendship for granted allowing for the main guy to come along.
I'm putting this story together to make my friend feel better about this unnecessary drama caused by her supposed best guy friend, so help me make a good korean drama out of it Beanies!

vvv cliche: second lead guy ends up dating some other girl (lets call her girl2), main girl teams up w main guy (who likes girl2) to break girl2 & second lead guy up / revenge but then through this process main girl & main guy get together

Main guy is a successful CEO and fell in love with main girl at their rough first encounter. It was the first time he was treated like this. He tries to swoon the girl with gifts and showing off his wealth. Second lead guy is jealous seeing her being showered by a rich guy. Main girl doesn't like this situation but actually learns main guy has 6 months to live. She takes pity of him and stay with him but as times pass by, she falls in love with him. There's noble idiocraty going on at some and leaves her place to the second lead girl who was chosen to be main guy's fiancée by her parents. After being send abroad trying an experimental treatment, main guy comes back and looks for main girl. She thinks he's dating second lead girl when in reality it's false. After going through some angst because of main guy parents, they overcome hardships and get married.

That real life drama really exist. Boy 1 and Girl are childhood friends. Boy 1 tells Girl he likes her but it is not the right time for them to be together. Girl waited for him to be ready but they separated ways because they went to different universities. Girl learned that Boy 1 dated other girls. Boy 2 came along. Boy 2 did his best to make girl fall in love with her and then they become together happily. Boy 1 realized, after a few years, that he still love the Girl and felt how stupid he is to let go of the Girl. He made drastic moves to get the Girl back.

In real life, no cancer but only regrets for Boy 1. Haha. Girl is torn between two boys, so the OTP is still unclear. lols. Boy 1 being her first love but the cause of her first heart break is just too good to be true; handsome, smart, successful... someone every girl would want to introduce to their parents; but he is too serious and uptight to the point of being boring. Boy 2 on the otherhand, is the badboy type... aggressive but kind-hearted, streetwise, ruggedly handsome, very vocal to his feelings. He excites her but there is something about him that made Girl hold back because there is a possibility that Boy 2 can hurt her someday.

Also, with Boy 1 there is history, and Girl knows that they get along and have been friends for a long time already, they already knows most of each others flaws as well as strengths. With Boy 2 there is uncertainty of not knowing what you will find out next.

In the real life scenario, Boy 1 is handsome, smart and very quirky. Boy 2 does not exist in the scenario, but I like the idea of either a bad boy, or of Boy 2 being the uptight successful one, for the sake of my friend, who usually ends up with guys that have too much immaturity with their quirkiness.

Makjang drama:

Actors:

Best friend, first love, handsome, but very quirky: Kim Young Kwang (sorry, I just think he’d play quirky with a bent of evil well)—Chaebol heir

New guy: Seo In Guk—Musician, struggling, in a band, but almost getting his big break. Also, quirky, wears heart on sleeve.

Girl: Kim Go Eun—sensible, very smart, not poor, but not rich, parents are social climbers (scrmped and saved) and had their daughter in the richest, most elite schools, which is why she was able to meet Kim Young Kwang from a young age.

Second Girl lead: Kim Sejeong (because School 2017)

Setting: Seoul (because dramas are always set in Seoul)

The childhood counterparts of KYK and KGE (wow, I really want to see this pairing now) start off in nursery school and a montage of them growing up through primary, secondary and university plays. They spend all their time together, love video games—KYK wants to be a gamer in secret and has an alter ego on-line and posts all his play by plays and makes good money doing so—only KGE knows of this alter ego, play piano together, do their homework together. She’s the smart one, so helps him constantly with his homework all the way through college. They both go into their careers, him to his family’s business, and she’s an ER doctor. One day, she meets SIG, when he comes in after being hit by a car. He’s in hysterics, blabbering how he won’t ever be able to play the guitar again, until she comes in and he’s instantly smitten by her beauty and grace while she sets his arm. He has no qualms about asking her out, even though he’s broke and she’s a doctor. She doesn’t know him from Adam, but is pretty computer savvy from all the gaming she did with KYK, that she looks up everything about him and finds out he’s not a serial killer and that he’s in an idie band that plays all over Seoul, she goes to a show he’s in and is impressed with his ability as well. She invites her bestie KYK to the show. Here KYK complains that his family wants him to marry and settle down—he’s a real player by this point, and says that KGE knows him better than anyone else and if she would consider marrying him. This throws her off, because being good at her job has been her first and foremost desire for so many years and she hasn’t really thought about marriage. But, she considers it, remembers all their fun times (flashbacks here) and starts to maybe have romantic feelings for him.

In the meantime, SIG has been wooing her to the “n”th degree, showing up to her work with flowers, making up illnesses to come into the ER to see her and it’s totally adorable (can’t you imagine!?!). He even brings his guitar in and sings to the kids in the hospital—GAH!

KYK, on the other hand, continues to call her when he gets into trouble with other girls he’s been dating, and she is always the good girl and gets him out of it. Once, he couldn’t get a girl to stop stalking him, so she shows up to the girl’s house with an...

...an ax and tells her to “stay away from my man” because he asked her to.

SIG gets his big break with a recording contract, KGE has been going to all his concerts as she has the time to (between being a kickass doctor and getting KYK out of his messes), and she’s the first person he tells.

The climax comes after KYK does tell his parents that he’s chosen a wife, and his family assumes it is KGE. They even go as far as to send invitations to everyone.

KGE has to get him out of this mess as well, because she realizes that this is all she’s going to do for the rest of her life, getting him out of the graves he’s dug for himself.

KYK ends up with stalker chick, and she ends up with SIG.

The end.

I should add a couple more details (the devil is in the details!). KGE's parents are also pressuring her to marry KYK as well, this is their dream for their daughter (to marry an heir)--and were instrumental in getting those invitations sent.

Stalker chick first met KYK on-line and thought he was just an gaming guy (hidden identities). After KGE threatened her with an ax, she was like, "Hell to the no!" and reveals him to his family after the invitations go out. KGE goes in to bat for him yet again, because his parents LOVE her, and tells his family that he's only ever wanted to be a gamer and has made some money already doing so. They relent, he is removed from his position in the company and he and stalker chick go on to build a gaming empire.

SIG and KGE find a way to make their very complicated life together work--with him being a highly successful entertainer and her a very skilled physician. But true love prevails and they all live happily ever after.

The end--for reals, this time.

Happy Friday everyone!! And Happy Labor Day to the American beanies!

I'm currently watching and loving The King Loves. My crush on Hong Jong Hyun has gotten ridiculous. I hope that the ratings rise or at least stay consistent in Korea, and the shipping wars or whatever die down. I'm also impressed with Im Siwan and am planning to watch Misaeng next.

My husband, who has only watched a couple of dramas with me, decided to try a few more. We are watching Circle, which I LOVE, and he's enjoying coming up with theories on the identity of the chairman (we just finished episode 7). It's fun to rewatch and see all the ending clues. We are also watching Bad Guys, which he absolutely loves. I'm making him finish Circle with me first :) Bad Guys is really in it's own class, it seems more like watching a movie somehow? The actors are doing an amazing job and I can't pick a favorite character!

I haven't watched "Cicle" but I have watched "Bad Guys" and liked it. However your post made me think of something. I wonder why is it so hard to writers to write good and coherent story-lines, when romance is one of the main genres, and yet they can write good stories were they pay attention to the smallest detail when romance isn't in the equation?

This actually pisses me off a bit, because I would love to see some intense plots with romance being one of the main genres of the drama. I feel like masterpieces could be done, if writers would just pay attention. Yet it seems that writes and maybe directors get lazy with romance dramas because they know that these shows will (in general) automatically get high ratings, so they don't pay too much attention to the plot... grrr

To be honest, they just gave us a massive cliffhanger that's supposed to make everyone gasp but who knows what she actually did.... Imma ignoring that ending until next week.

That said, the whole drama isn't particularly realistic (not just the medical stuff). I don't get the ship scenario at all. They had no doctors, then they added three that are total newbies (of which two are acting as if they weren't doctors, and only one appears to be competent), then they finally added an experienced doctor. Why were there no doctors before? Why wasn't there at least one doctor that has been there for a longer time/is experienced? And the nurses, except for the one that's been working for 15+ years, seem to be also complete newbies and there for mere decoration. Did they not have to do anything before the new doctors came? (And yet, the moment HJW arrives they have one spectacular case after the other.) I confess I don't even buy that the hospital ship is an "unpopular" assignment – sure, it's not for everyone, but there are all kinds of young people and many have an adventurous spirit and would totally be up for something more out of the extraordinary. Makes me a bit sad that the drama is as if suggesting that all of Korean youth fits into one box.

I could also do without every single character having a tragic story in their background (already got three that experienced a traumatic death that they are not over yet) and why do Korean dramas insist on making us hate Korean moms (even Eun-jae's mom rubbed me the wrong way)?

But I do like Kang Min-Hyuk's character so far. He tried to stop Eun-jae when she suddenly showed up (he was right to do so – she came out of nothing and the operation was risky), but he helped her AND he apologised afterwards. I liked that straightforwardness.

As for HJW's character... I guess she's okay but I just feel like HJW plays the same kind of character a lot?

It bothered me that there were no doctors before the newbies and no basic medical material. I can go over unrealistic cases because I'm used to it in medical dramas but having nobody skilled enough (we need more than just Kang Min Hyuk's character and the eldest nurse) prior Ha Ji Won's character arrival was a let down.

Yeah, because it makes no sense – it's the beginning of the drama, the writer CAN SET THIS UP. It's not like it's episode 10, where they might have written themselves in a corner and have to come up with something crazy that just sort of fits. I really don't think writing something that makes bit more sense is that hard. Like, have *at least* one doctor – with experience – already there. Or make the hospital ship a new one that's just being set up (like, there was one before, they are adding a second ship in a different area, so now they need people and equipment).

But really, what was the ship doing and who – other than the boat crew and the nurses-in-pink – was on it? And what if HJW's character had never shown up (since it seems like there was even no plan at all to recruit an experienced doctor or a surgeon in the several weeks that must have passed before Eun-Jae's arrival)?

Apparently, the assignment of public doctors are done through the raffle (I don't know how that works actually and how often they do it). I guess the previous doctors assigned in the hospital ship have completed their time of service prior to the three new doctors coming in. So, I think the previous doctors just went on with their service without really trying to innovate anything in the hospital ship or even somehow cared about the patients from the far flung areas not being attended properly medically because of the lack of adequate equipment.

2

The hospital already welcomed military doctors like the three newbies because it has a reputation in the military of people wanting to avoid it. So I presume it always had inexperienced doctors and for the medical equipment ? They don't have a budget ? What were they doing on this ship ?

2

@Allysondragon

It doesn't make sense though. It was a raffle for people doing their military service, not even a general raffle for doctors in the public service – basically, taking the most newly qualified doctors as possible that will leave after their service is over. If that is the basis of how they run this public service, it is set up for problems due to inexperience, high turnover, constant training of new staff (with no one to train them really) – a huge waste of public funds.

There are quite a few of Japanese medical dramas of this sort that are set in remote locations (I think there's at least one ship-based drama and several set on remote islands), but in those cases there's usually just one doctor and one nurse – so that the lack of instruction and basic service they provide actually kind of makes sense. But here, we've got a huge staff (4 nurses, 4 doctors, and quite a few boat crew too) but until Eun-jae comes along no one but one nurse seems to have much medical experience or competence. I just don't get what those people were doing before? And wouldn't having a traditional practioner (and even a dentist) be sort of a luxury (wouldn't you primarily want a GP and someone who can deal with emergency cases?)? It would be better to hire a single mid-career doctor for a high salary (to attract them to the post) plus one nurse than to pay half a dozen people that barely know what they are doing...

@mango

The 'no budget' was bound to happen – it's also bound to come up as part of the drama as well (someone higher authority trying to shut down the service due it being too costly to run). But if there's truly no budget, there shouldn't be four doctors and four nurses on board to begin with... Especially if most of them aren't actually doing anything.

2

It is the responsibility of the government to provide at least the basic medical services to the citizens like regular check ups, immunization, health teachings, disease prevention, etc. So, Instead of putting health clinics in each of the island, they have this ship to do the scheduled rounds to cater the people's "basic" health needs. However, emergency situations such as stat surgeries cannot be performed, so patients who needs more than just the basic procedures are referred to the hospitals. Having said that, I think it is not apt to call this "Hospital Ship". They do not even have patient beds to admit the patients. They should only call it clinic rather than hospital. hahaha

2

<It is the responsibility of the government to provide at least the basic medical services to the citizens like regular check ups, immunization, health teachings, disease prevention, etc.

Yeah – I agree with you on that, that's what I expected. But that doesn't explain the numbers and kind of staff that they have...

0

You're right it does not make sense at all realistically. Maybe the writer is trying to put on a story arc in which HJW's character would effect change to the other characters' attitude towards medical service.

1

We share same opinion on various airing content. Within 1st 15 minutes of the show i accepted that everything is manufactured in this overly dramatic show. Everything shiny but makes no logic at all. They all acted more like live-performers than doctors.

Chief takes credit and hardly is covered in magazine and heroine is on front page of a newspaper for saving a cheobal. Talk about budget - and helicopters flying everywhere. 3 idiots using Ship as a yacht which noone before them ever thought of? The least talked about medical procedures the better.
All 3 main characters already have some emotional baggage. This show is hero worship straight off the bat.

Required fields are marked *

At the moment I've come to the conclusion that they cast three idols*, so they had to make them young, newly qualified doctors, which were needed to make at least a love triangle (if not a love square) for the one wonderwoman – with hints of genius already – doctor (Sidenote: I'm also annoyed that all the nurses are female and dressed in pink. LOL.).... As in, this show is less about the struggle of life and work in a situation challenging because of its particular setting than serving, as you say, a dramatic hero worship romance narrative.

That said, the drama hasn't reached Dr. Stranger degrees of lack of realism (blatantly defying laws of nature) – I checked out of that drama after ep 2, thanks to that character that had a major operation, was able to survive a crazy motorbike chase through the city and fall off a bridge and still come out of alive. I'll watch for a few more episodes, since there isn't much else to watch anyhow...

(*I do think Kang Min-Hyuk has potential and my issue isn't the age gap per se either.)

I am still trying to figure out why in hell they would even WANT an oriental medicine doctor on board, along with 74 other WTF things.

0

Perhaps it's whoever gets drawn in the raffle. Like, this year a Korean medicine doctor and a dentist, next year two plastic surgeons. (I'm only half-joking here...)

2

I think this could actually happen, though. I know that even in US deployed situations, you may not have anyone there that has ever been deployed (and all the doctors are "new" in the sense that they've never been or seen anything that they are now experiencing). They may be experienced doctors, but they've never been in these situations. It's set up that the "Hospital Ship" is a dreaded place to be-- and I can vouch that most doctors would NOT want to be there, and even the very altruistic ones have families that they have to get back to. So, very possible to have a room full of people that have never been there before and have no idea what they're doing and are making it up on the fly.

Not having experienced particular situations before is one thing, but acting like you're not even a doctor is another (especially when they are so young and should still have youthful idealism about the medical profession).

Also, the boat crew and the nurses have apparently been there for a while, but except for one nurse they are acting like they are new to this stuff (the medical bit).

I'll have to see this now. I was just speaking to the "deer in headlights" look that they may have because the situation is new and unexpected,

Maybe they're just out of med school and this is their "training" site? I don't know why I'm even justifying something I haven't seen. Lol! I'll watch it and give my opinion in the recap.

2

@Ally

It's just that there's no one to train them! Well, now there is, because by sheer luck several weeks after their arrival, a more experienced (but not senior, but still, someone with clearly above average skills) doctor shows up due a) experiencing some life-altering crisis at her previous hospital b) somehow having been barred to work everywhere else despite being very, very good and c) her mother by yet another great chance of luck coming from that area.

2

I don't agree with that. While most might not, even Doctors Without Borders get a lot of volunteers to work in some really awful places, much worse than anything like that ship.

If so, here's my take (which has, of necessity, the spoiler of what she actually did, so read on at own risk....

.....

)

She took the pulse of the hand, and there was none. This means that the arm is not getting blood and will start to die very soon. I assume she removed it in order to get it on ice so that it can be surgically reattached later. To what degree that is medically realistic, I have no idea, but based on my lifetime of watching medical TELEVISION, I'm 90% sure this is her plan ;)

I personally found that entire scenario just freaking stupid. I spent 5 years at sea, 3.5 of that on a search and rescue ship in the Navy. For someone to just leave an open hatch not tied down in heavy seas like that was so stupid they deserved to get smooshed. All in all, I find most of the actual shipboard stuff just totally ludicrous.

Viki and dramafever are not available in my country so this site was one of my source of Asian dramas and specially movies. It's inconvenient for people who are in my case.

Morning Beanies,

Ugh I hate ants. I wish they die external death. I just finished cleaning my kitchens. I hope no more ants.

I am caught up Save Me, School 2017 ( I am loving Taeswoon.) For Chinese drama. I am caught up with King's Woman. I love the ruthless, charismatic king more than Jing Ke. I wish Han Se was more of second lead then Jing Ke because so far Jing Ke is drinking and whining. I hope Li knows that the boy was the king who love her very much.

HAve a great weekend Beanies!! To my American Beanies! HAppy Labor Day!! prayers to all those who lost a lot during Hurricane Harvey.

For the ant problem. Try baby powder. I put that down in my kitchen a few years ago and rarely have a problem now. The minute I spot the scouter ant. I put some more down. (So far so good this year.)

I am an anti-ant freak also, hate them. Best thing I have found is Terro Ant Baits http://www.terro.com/terro-liquid-ant-baits-2-pack. Non toxic (basically just washing Borax) unless you eat a ton. Works much better than baby powder, which only kills or stops the ants that actually touch it. Been using Terro for years and never failed to wipe out the entire colony.

Life has been super stressful lately. I am trying so hard to find balance between multiple jobs and caring for the family. It really blows my mind how Dramaland's Candies are all such amazing multitaskers; they work insane hours, almost never get sick although their diet mainly consists of ramyeon, live in neat and orderly space, still have time to romance the hero, still manage to look pretty most of the time, and are usually great at taking care of various house chores. If any of those Super-Candies write a book on time or stress management, hell yeah, I would certainly buy it.

On another note, I am still in a drama slump. Only watch raw version of AOY 2 while reading the recaps at DB. However, the previous theme of the month gives some interesting suggestions such as Dal Ja's Spring (never watched it before) and FBND (watched it before but have forgotten about the second half of the series); which I hope to pick up later once I can establish a rythm with my new routines. Looking forward for this month's theme, the articles are usually such a delight to read.

Life can be hard. But usually worth living once you find that one thing you truly like about it. (Kdramas can be that one thing.) ✌

I acknowledge that I have a serious problem with K-dramas - namely, that I spend too much time on them at substantial cost to real life.

Thus, goal for this week - three drama-free days. Two days down (with great difficulty).

Here's to healthy and responsible drama viewing habits!

My favorite part is that you're still on dramabeans. :) It's a low key way of still getting some kdramas. Breaks are good though. Stay strong.

Hi Beanies,
I have been having a problem with the websites that I use to watch dramas. (Kissasian and Dramacool keeps on crashing in a middle of the drama and the load super slowly). I would be grateful it you guys could give me some recommendations of other drama websites that I could use. Thx!
P.S Happy labour day weekend for anyone that celebrates it!!^^

Have you tried dramafever or vikiasia? ( i think that's the name? I only use Kissasian or Dramacool when I was desperate because neither of these website carried what I was looking for. Also. You have to be careful not to download a virus. (You might have already downloaded one if your computer is acting slow all together.)

Those and similar sites have gotten pretty awful lately. Ad Blocker used to mostly work, but no more. The site itself seems to be malware free, but they seem to take ads from every dodgy place that ever came up shady ways to get into your computer.

Nope. But I sure hope you had a back up plan. As jobs you truly love are hard to come by. You have to be careful not to make a habit out of it. Find something you like about a job and concentrate on that instead of what you hate. (There will usually be at least one.)

Ok. I have to ask. Is it normal to love a drama so much you watch the series over and over again in a short period of time. Only to realize that what you really loved were the actors. Not the actual script?
So then you take it upon yourself to change almost everything about it. At first in your head (as I've done before.) But this time. I seriously had to write it all out. It was nuts. I must have really liked the potential the drama had and wanted to see what it could become... right? Or am I just nuts? Hahaha.... Be kind...

It was for Wild Romance. I watched it at least three times in a row, thinking this is a really great job, but.... Then I realized I had fallen for the actors, but the script was lacking. So. I made my own. titled Wild Romance...Haha. BWaahahaha.

Did you not just see the plotIine with actors I wrote above? I do this ALL. THE. TIME. I used to read novels, now I just come up with stories and flesh them out in my head instead of reading and kdramas made this habit worse. Because I'm like you and think, why did they do that??? I would have put this scene here it that scene there and had them say this... it's a problem. But stress-relieving for me.

I have been gone from dramaland for so long. I spent the summer at camp where there's not much wifi. Now I am back home, but I need to save money so I also have limited wifi :0 So when I was at my parents, I downloaded many many dramas and movies to last me all year hahaha Of course it had to be completed dramas so I won't be able to keep up with currently airing dramas :(

I started watching Stranger (Forest of Secrets) and it is soooo good. I have no idea how it is going to end. I love the characters and their interactions are gold. Bae Doona is incredible. I first noticed her in Sense8 in which she is badass! It's my first time seeing Cho Seungwoo and I love his interpretation of a emotionless man. He makes the character so believably human despite showing no emotions what soever hahaha

I also started the Chinese drama Love o2o and I love it. It's campy and cheesy but I just love the set up. It is so weird to see Yang Yang smile. I am use to his stone face character from Whirlwind Girl.

I also heard good things about the lakorn Kleun Cheewit, but I am skeptical since it is a slap-kiss. I was wondering if anyone had watched it and what they thought of it. I tried to download it but it is not as easily accessible as other Lakorns.

Watched Kleun Cheewit.. hmm.. not slap kiss in traditional sense..

the guy is not an outright spoilt brat of anything.. and the suggestion of them together.. happens at a time when both are already in love.. and the girl instigates him..

Its a good drama... addictive.. yaya is really good

Currently enjoying two Japanese dramas, Akira to Akira and Kahogo no Kahoko( Overprotedted Kahoko).

Akira to Akira is not 'Akira vs Akira' where two same name men fight against each other. The setting is in a big bank in Japan during the time when the legendary bubble era just ended. They have very different backgrounds but somehow they help each other to save certain financial disasters. It's a good banker story which seems quite opposite of how bankers behave lately. Osamu Mukai and Takumi Saito are the main actors. I do not consider this drama a typical bromance drama at all and I am not sure where this genre belongs to. Yet I actually enjoy watching it.

Kahogo no Kahoko is a gem in my opinion. Kahoko was brought up as a very overprotected daughter by her parents and her extended family members. Obviously she is quite spoiled and she cannot function her life without a help of her mother. Yet she does not come across as a spoiled brat cause her heart is pure and innocent. She is willing to do extra in order to keep peace in her extended family. However, as she met a struggling art student, she gradually became more independent under his influence and her mom hated it. The story is fun and engaging and I love her dad's dialogue while he was observing what is going on in his family dynamics. He is so soft and he is bossed around by his wife, a typical Japanese man. I actually like his character best since he is quite relatable. The actress, Mituki Takahata is truly a gem(I think that Hana Kuroki and she are the new hope in Japanese film industry.). I cannot help cheering for her action.

Miotukushi Ryori-cho featuring Hana Kuroki was also interesting. The drama is set in Edo period. She demonstrates traditional Japanese cooking at the end of each episode and I love it. I hope this is going to be a series in future since the drama is based on a novel( or manga) and the original novel does not end where the drama ended.

I also think that Miotsukushi Ryori-cho's story is still unfinished, so I also hope for a new season.
I still need to catch up with Akira to Akira, since it's a drama I need to concentrate while watching.

<Kahogo no Kahoko

I agree that this drama has something (as I said on the last 'What We're Watching'). Surprisingly enough it's indeed Kahoko that makes this show work and Mituki Takahata fits the role well.

I just wish I'd enjoy the side characters more, as too many of them are either not interesting or just plain annoying. The mom and the Dad's sister (even his parents) are really grating, though the mom's side of the family somehow is likeable (the grandma + grandpa... how did they ever produce daughter like that? But I guess mama really has OCD, with an added dash of passive aggressive guilt-tripping if things don't go her way).

I might check out Akira to Akira based on your rec...

the actress who plays Kahoko's mom is not popular in Japan. Many (potential) viewers wrote in that they do not watch this drama because of the actress( because they dislike her. Most viewers love Takahata( Kahoko) and her BF). But there is something about the actress,( probably her perfectionist attitude in her real life) really fits in the personality of Kahoko's mom. I think Kahoko's mom is absolutely passive aggressive guilt tripping manipulative person. Her husband sometimes mentions how she is in his dialogue. None of them in the extended family is far from perfect.

I went and googled the Mom actress... I haven't seen much with her, only Golden Bowl (lead role) and Good Luck! (minor role). She's pretty insignificant in the latter, but I did like Golden Bowl and I liked her in that drama – she and the lead had a great rapport, their witty banter came across as very natural and with plenty of chemistry.

So I can't see the issue with her as an actress, it's the role in this case – I wish it were a little less extreme, or were written in a more quirky, humorous way, not the passive-aggressive manipulative way that it comes across. Because that makes her very hard to like AND because if she ends up changing (if only a bit), it won't be compelling – because people who are like that in real life, don't change.

This is why NigeHaji worked so much better for me – the side characters were all flawed, but loveable despite their flaws. Kahoko manages to be like that, but hardly anyone from the rest of the Kahogo no Kahoko characters does.

I like Hajime, but I wish we saw more of him (and his story) as well. We get bits of info, but beyond his studio and part-time jobs (and those only b/c Kahoko is there) we see nothing of him, so he feels a bit flat and more like device to propel Kahoko's growth than a full character.

This is a very late reply. The actress who plays Kahoko's mother is well known actress who started as a female lead in Takarazuka( all female theatre group). I do not follow her but it seems that many do not like her on personal level, if not her acting skills.
You will see more Hajime as the story progress. I like how their relationship develops. People around Kahoko have much flaws, indeed .

Very late reply, but I managed to catch up and enjoyed it thoroughly. It's from Ikeido Jun's novel, so no wonder. I love some other dramas based on his novels as well.
