Drama viewership ratings for the week of Aug. 14-20, 2017

There’s not too much going on in the Monday-Tuesday slot recently, since everything there has been holding steady, and there haven’t been any major upsets. Falsify continues to hold the lead (and may even break its own record soon), while The King Loves trails behind in second place.

School 2017 must have made peace with their low numbers, and they can at least be (somewhat?) reassured that they aren’t the lowest earner on the Big 3 networks: That dishonor goes to Manhole, which reached a new low of 2.0%(!) this week. I’m still sad about that, and hoping the show doesn’t get cut, but alas, dramaland is a fickle mistress.

On the other end of the spectrum, Man Who Dies to Live continues to kill it in the numbers game (and reached its highest numbers yet at 13.5%), though Reunited Worlds is putting up a valiant fight. I’m betting that tvN had higher hopes for Criminal Minds though, and while it isn’t doing poorly, it’s not pulling in the kinds of numbers that would make it a success.

Last but not least, Woman of Dignity finished its run at an incredible series high of 12.1%, while Rescue Me only saw the slightest uptick (but seriously guys, this show is so good, go watch it). Fish-out-of-water comedy Live Up to Your Name looks to be on the rise though, netting 4.5% in its odd episode.

I swear, that show is very good, very funny. Kim Jae-jung is very good and energetic to live Bong Pil's character. And his gang also very funny. The only thing I don't like to see here is Uee, she's beyond skinny, look at her wrist in the beginning of ep. 2. Plus she look unhappy. I just wish that nothing bad happened to her in real life.

I havent started it yet but why? Is it start with little promotion so nobody know Manhole? Is Jaejoong for godsake :(
I hope even the rating is low it will still be his good starting stone.

Someone tell me how Man Who Dies to Live gets high rating?

Regarding Man Who Dies to Live, I was pretty turned off by the beginning. Those ladies in bikinis and veils, seriously! But on a boring night I decided to give ep 15 a chance and I was hooked. The lead male characters (the father and husband of the lead female) are learning to be human, but our lead female is giving them hell. She is truly an awesome character. I like her a lot. Plus the plot, now fully centered in Korea, is moving along nicely. I LOVE Jaejoong, but I must admit I'm only sticking with Manhole for him, because I don't like any of the characters. Yet. There is still hope.

With Man Who Lives to Die I'm totally invested in the heroine's life. So I'm thinking that if I lived in Korea and had to choose, I would probably choose this show. Luckily, they apologized for the controversy, deleted the offensive scenes, and are sticking to Korea. If they continue to do that, I'll stick around.

The show is fantastic. My favorite out of everything that's on right now. You'll find it on kocowa.

It's Pretty frustrating drama and its humour is big headache for the most. You can't tolerate Pil acting the same way each and every week. Main Heroine is non-existent. It lacks any emotional impact. You can't resonate with any character. And much more.
The show literally is a suicide watch. Much more can be said but Ratings themselves have told the truth.

I feel like Uee and Jaejoong are having a similar issue, which is that neither is really an actor, and they don't create energy in roles. They tend to do OK when they have someone strong to play off of (Hogu's Love or Triangle), but they do poorly when they're supposed to carry the show.

Between this one and The King Loves? I really wish these casting directors would recognize the limitations of their idol actors.

Well done @mariah
Some actors mean to be the flower bud, the jewel of crown, the star that suck all the energy and synergic with story & casts flow.

UEE maybe hasnt reach that level yet. She is good when the par is the guide, but when she has to bcm the guide, she loose it.

Ojakyo : has Joo Won & Mama
Nightlight : has Lee Yo Won
Marriage Contract : has Lee So Jin
High Society : she is senior
Manhole : she is senior

I only watch Jaejoong in PTB, so I dont really know

I beg to differ. I feel like the storyline is a bit cliche, the humour is a little too forced and the chemistry between jaejoong and the second lead is better than with uee. I can't stand to watch even 1 episode of the series.. So, yes.. i understand why it is not well received in korea.

It is a family/ weekend drama and those usually pull big numbers and if it didn't have (the unnecessary) cancer trope so late in the plot, I would have said that it is one of the best dramas ever. It has a good balance of dramatic moments and humour, good writing (I hope that the cancer thing came as a necessity to fill in 2 more episodes and I can even understand why - even realistically - the mom got it, but it stays to close to the truck of doom and amnesia in the they-should-never-use-it-anymore top tropes, that I wish they found something better). The cast is great, even the less experienced actors deliver a good performance. All in all I am not in the least surprised by the numbers and I am really, really happy for the show and for everybody involved.

Apart from LJK and MCW, there is Son Hyun Joo whom is a respectable actor. LJK and MCW may have chosen some bad projects in the past but not SHJ. These big stars probably chosen this drama because of the promising team behind it who had quite impressive track record. How would they know that the production team would let them down big time with the disjointed pace, bad editing and poor directing?

If I am not wrong, Criminal Minds Korean adaptation is written by a new writer(or more than one) who won a script contest. In the past year, the dramas following which were written by rookie writers were:
Ruler of The Mask
Radiant Office
My Sassy Girl
Lookout
Forest of Secrets
There are probably more.

Obviously, FOS is an rare exception where a new writer performed exceptionally and even outdid more experienced ones. Some were very pleasant surprises like Radiant Office.

Adapting from an original drama can be challenging but at the same time with such a rich source of materials, it should not have fared so badly either. IMO, whoever is behind CMK should not have entrusted the writing to a rookie. Especially when there was no supervision or vetting of script. The drama has too many plotholes and uninspiring dialogues. Throw in bad directing and editing, the result is far from expected.

In a way, CMK reminds me of Moon Lovers. Both have big budgets and experienced PDs. Yet they fared poorly in ratings. It all starts with the writing. Moon Lovers had an inexperienced writer or nearly new writer. The PDs also messed up despite having better prior projects. I wonder why so little attention or money is spent on the writing?

7 Day Queen was also a rookie writer.

As a general rule, I've been really impressed with rookie writers this year. Can't say anything about Criminal Minds in particular as I am not watching it.

It's good for the industry to give new writers a chance. As viewers, we also get to enjoy diversity and hopefully better dramas. What I am surprised at is the lack of oversight. I have raised this question before but I don't think there's an answer. Who does the job of checking script, plotlines and story for quality and coherence? It appears that there is none. Maybe a PD is supposed to do that job.

1
3

Required fields are marked *

Thats what I have been asking in my brain as always. Who did supervise the script before its finalised?

Yeah I bet is PD (Anthony thing could probably another point should be taken as ruiner in script flow)

But PD has too many job. Oh but there are many PD's.

I do thing actors can voice their concern regarding the script, but we dont know how much influences can be taken, actors seniority & success, the relationship between crews, favoritism, so its grey point to be taken.

2

@chanelboy There were so many times where the plotholes are so huge and obvious that it puzzled me why can't anyone in the production see them?

I'm sure if there is a will, there is a way to solve these issues. Problem is how committed is the team in delivering quality? In reality, I am sure there are other priorities besides producing a good drama.

0

@outofthisworld

"There are other priorities beside producing a good drama"
✔️✔️✔️??

I do believe those priorities depends on PD & production house on board.

'Should we produce a good drama?'
'Oh how about produce a rating monster? /makjang etc'
'Or...drama that will commercially famous in China and friends?'
'Nevermind, just go with big sponsor wants'
'Hey, the *** company call, they said their actress shouldn't be dress poorly, she has sponsors to held on, (eventhough the actress casts as poor heroine with 3 part time jobs, unpaid school fee, father at hospital to support, oh dont forget she has puppy bcs she is animal lovers.'

3

Based on the dramas you wrote above, seems like the rookie writers are faring quite well. Only ruler of the mask and my sassy girl were zz. Radiant office, lookout, forest of secrets were good.
Actually, Criminal minds was still okay. Guess it's more a matter of wrong timing. There's already falsify showing on Mon-Tue. So hard to avoid some comparisons and flocking to other shows especially since there's just too many shows to watch lately. The side characters are not helping too. I suppose a more experienced writer may infuse more emotional beats to help. But I'm not sure what else it can do too. Sometimes, such materials are not guaranteed success just because it's an adaptation.

Required fields are marked *

I don't think it is wrong timing or competition/comparison.

The drama has issues:
1. The so called Korean flavors they tried to infuse in this are actually kdrama tropes like burdening the lead character with overly dramatic tragedies.
2. For a crime thriller, the writing and directing are utterly boring. We should be riveted to our seats but there is hardly tension in the show.
I've read that many cases were largely adapted from the original so either the original was boring too or the adaption was poor.
3. I won't get into the plotholes and stuff but overall the drama feels very manufactured.

Many crime dramas suffer from less than perfect writing but they had at least one or two things going for them. For Lookout and Tunnel, viewers got invested in the main characters and some good thrills.

2
reply

Required fields are marked *

It is hard to puzzle out how and why the big budget project can turns out badly.
And how the rating reacts to that drama is also another mystery.

Ruler Mask is a mess but it got high rating
Moon Lovers is also a mess but the rating is low?
7Days Queen is awesome but low rating

All by newbie writers.
I guess whats written on script/vision ahead sometimes its not that simple to translate to small screen, thats we got hit & miss everytime.
Too many probabilities & aspects to influence the process..

If there is one thing that correlates to high ratings, I'd go with popularity of the leads.

Yoo Seung Ho is very popular with Korean viewers although he doesn't seem to be that popular as a hallyu star. I'd say YSH and Kim So Hyun contribute largely to the success of Ruler of the Mask despite the drama being terrible in writing and directing. Yoo Seung Ho's previous drama "Remember - War of the Sons" was also very poorly written but the show hit high teens.

I think idol actors like IU don't necessarily pull in ratings even if they are very popular in kpop. I don't know what to make of Lee Jun Ki but looking at his track record, he doesn't seem to be able to pull in ratings by virtue of his star power.

We have debated quite a fair bit over 7DG dismal ratings. I think the factors were mostly timing and subject matter. There was again no star power - the 3 leads were very good but they are not that popular to garner ratings for a drama which the Koreans weren't interested for whatever reasons.

There you go.
I agree at many level abt YSH popularity in SK. He is def like Miley of SK. They grew up on TV.

Do u know Any other actor/actress can pull of such adoration from Kviewers?

Yes amazingly popular idol (eventho IU actually a singer not idol) doesn't guarantee anythg.

For 7DQ, I think beside star factor, the story abt seeing Yeongsanggun in different light (twist/fictionize the history) is hard to shallow for Kviewers.

Ex : if my country has real Tyrant leader like Yeongsanggun in the past, I won't spend a sec to invest for a show that has any tribute to him. He hurt our ancestor, hurting our country & such a bad nightmare to be remind of.

love story / any other history is good to go for any fiction project.

Sometimes history accuracy has more impact. Romantize or stretch a generalization for a tyran couldn't do much for sake of entertainment/art

3

There is a lot to love about a scandal free child actor, nation's little brother like Yoo Seung-ho who chose to serve in the military as soon as he was of age.
Melodrama and more old school sageuks are still popular among the older viewers.
"Imaginary Cat" didn't do as well.

Jang Hyuk can also carry a mediocre to badly written sageuk into the double digits.

Lee Jun-ki has always been more popular outside of Korea early on in his career as long as I can remember and that hasn't changed. He is devoted to his fans as much as they are to him.
Unfortunately, tv ratings is determined by the local viewers.

K viewers can be pretty sensitive when it comes to their history and no amount of good writings is going to change that.
Jo Jin-mo's character in Empress Ki (King Chunghye was a terrible king) and was changed into a fictional king after complain from the viewers and history scholars.
Kind of wish 7DQ didn't go there even before it was aired. I can't say I blame the locals for not watching it.

3

The thing about episodic crime dramas, which tend to be unengaging based on being episodic in itself, is it has to introduce a root/main conflict the characters need to solve little by little as the drama progresses, which will later be the focus of the plot (perhaps in the last 3-4 episode). It is the main pull that will make the viewers tune in every week. CMK doesn't seem to have this, or perhaps they did but was so poorly incorporated into ongoing/episodic plot.

I stopped watching after ep 4, wherein I forced myself to watch for MCW's sake.

Yeay for Woman of Dignity ? I never thought I would actually enjoyed this drama a lot. It is from a show that I dropped after epi 1, then re-picked up after reading good reviews until a show that I'm totally invested. Now it simply has become my top 5 drama of this year. From 2.0% at epi 1 to 12.1% at final epi, it is an impressive record. A proof that Koreans do not only watch drama just for casts (although undeniably they appreciate solid acting too, well who don't) , but also the storyline. It's not flawless but good enough to make you interested and intrigued.

The highest Falsify can get in my opinion is 15%. Manhole on the other hand is keeps decreasing which is sad. I was thinking to drop it but maybe will check another two epi next week. But can they make Bong Pil end up with Jin Sook?

Sera, the writer, Son Young-Mok, also penned May Queen, a train wreck that never ended. I looked up his profile on Asianwiki,

LOL. I think his drama can be interesting to watch with lesser epi, maybe the longest should be 30 epi. It seems like he loves to test viewers' patience.lol

1

Same here. I'm not a fan of makjang but I got into reading the recaps. It started out of curiosity -- folks seemed excited about the lead actresses and intrigued by what type of show this would be, typical makjang or satire -- then I just became too interested in the varied storylines.
And reading the recaps was a good middle ground for me. I didn't have to commit time to watching a makjang but I still wanted to follow (from a distance) the evolving storylines. It was only when Dramabeans decided to drop it that I realized how engrossed in the show I had gotten, so I started to watch from where Dramabeans left off. It took a couple episodes to figure out who was who (large cast, I had to rely on the pics from the recaps), but I'm glad that I watched it.

I'm actually pleased that JTBC is gaining such momentum in dramaland. Also, the fact that Writer Baek beating her own record would encourage JTBC to keep her and make more projects with her!

But I still don't think this ratings success will be enough for JTBC to expand their drama line up on their main TV channel any time soon since their strategy in putting variety shows to compete with the Big three network's dramas are paying off since they are doing very well on their respecting time slots.

Also, the scandal that people behind The Man who Dies to Live faced had in fact helped them to gain such ratings momentum. I've been following the series and it's getting good after that "scandalous" pilot episode.

Go, Live up to your name! Kim Nam Gil is <3 <3 <3

And I won't be surprised if Manhole's ratings go down below 1%. Man, that is just a poor show.

After the underwhelming performance ratings-wise of 2017's earlier female-centric offerings (MBC's Night Light and KBS' Perfect Wife), I couldn't be happier about Woman of Dignity's iconic record-breaking success in jTBC. Sure, it's cable numbers and I'm sure I'm not the only one still having qualms about its makjang-ness but I'm glad it grew steadily to prove itself worthy of the queens who lead the show. About 95% of the screen time are solely for them and the supporting ladies this story shows they're teeming with. Hopefully, kdramaland sees the potential.

"Rescue Me" is too dark and disturbing for the general audience. This drama is more like a movie, daring to go places where many hasn't. It is also treading very close or probably already in the territory of being offensive to a certain religion.

I liked the first 2 episodes and then when I reached ep 6 I couldn't take it anymore...I was so close to dropping it. I didn't find it funny (I was promised humour) and the office shenanigans were tedious...

But thank goodness I stuck around because things began to pick up speed and I feel in love with all the characters..they were starting to look like real people to me. And Chief Kim and Seo Yul were the best thing about the show...the bromance was ?!

Actually it got some Chief Kim vibe esp. with the first humor touch in early ep, and well it got NGM so not doing the comparison is nearly impossible ?
I binge watched Chief Kim 3 months ago : I loved it !!!

If I may add : every single ep I just keep falling for NGM deep voice , yes that was a very important information hahahahaha

I still love Namgoong Min but I have been fangirling Yoo Jun Sang from epi 1 ? I mean who can dislike him and his slippers?

actually I love the three : Mu-Young, Seok-Min is so cool and Chief Yang hilariously charismatic (if this is possible hahaha)
Like I said in the recap : I can’t wait to see these two compete to get the title of the most awesome/inspiring chief .

If they do a scene with the two asking Mu-Young "who do you prefer ?" that'll be my fav' scene of the year ??

2

Now show, give me a scene these three go to public bath together and see whose abs is the best (which we know the answer already lol). Namgoong Min's epic fanservice in Chief Kim still made me laugh lol.

Manhole: Couldn't bear to see UEE cachexic features. Someone please throw her a burger. Where is Subway when we need one? Dropping almost every dramas except ' Father is Strange'. I can get why the ratings are so bad...they're bad!

I love 'Save Me' aka 'Rescue Me' (don't like to call it the latter because it automatically gets the Aretha Franklin song 'Rescue Me' of playing in my head *like now* and it becomes an ear worm for the day). It's so good. I anticipate every episode and watch raw as soon as they come out. I am so invested in the characters of Sang Mi and Dong Cheol. My heart is on pieces almost every weak watching the often cruel, monsterous nature of humans (the town's complicity kills me). I'm so glad to see ratings somewhat rise. With a show like this 2.0 will be a success and that's what I hope they manage to get.

Yay to strongest delivery man since I'm starting to get into it. I need Jin Yul to succeed jusy so he can entually prove himself as better than his father will ever be and avenge for all that he had to endure by that man by being happy and successful and better than him in every way (thoughbthr journey to that is difficult and not is that boy desperate and got a lot of growing to do).

I don't get why strongest deliveryman isn't doing super well considering how it's honestly such a great drama? i'm totally invested in the relationships & its so (kind of) heartwarming to see character growth and everything from two sides of the spectrum

I'm soo happy "Live Up to Your Name" is doing well. It is such a fun and entertaining drama. Both leads are also doing fantastic and they have crazy chemistry together. Looking forward to ep 4. I cant contain my excitement for the next crazy adventure we're about to face. XD

Prince can't save the day. Its everyone's fault(except him). Strongest Deliveryman is better than Meh and Bleh. As usual Man who Lives is the leader of the week. I was very interested in Dignity of Women because of Female characters but couldn't ignore those makjang elements.
I still think Falsify is getting better ratings than it deserves.

it's been on my mind for a while now, why SBS and MBC show to episode in row?

It's a new programming format that they are trying out. They air one half hour episode with no break for commercials. Then air the commercials at the end of the half hour episode and continue with the next episode uninterrupted too after that. I think it has something to do with ratings also.

This is to bypass government regulations that prohibit free to air networks to air ads in between programs. The main reason is because of poor ad revenue, because they cannot charge advertisers with "Premium" ad rates as they can only air ads after the show's opening, and after the show's ending credits.

This is something that cable channels like tvN and JTBC can do, because unlike terrestrial networks, they can insert a minute worth of ads within a show.

Also, lots of viewers would tend to leave a program while they air ads, and go back once the ads end, as suggested thru the "by-minute" ratings of a show. So although they get high ratings, that ratings won't have a weight. When compare it will cable programs, there's less likely that a viewer will leave a cable program since once the one-minute ad ends in the middle of the show, the program's continuation begins.

I'm watching it. I've only watched up to episode 9, but I like it well enough. It's your typical family makjang. I'd say it's something to watch after you've watched all your main priority shows.

the only drama i watched and anticipated each week was WOD. the acting ,the writing, the editing was really spot on. Congratz for the ratings!
I recently started "Save Me" and can't say I'm
'hooked' but I will keep watching (Thankfully I like dark scary dramas. but sometimes the social issues creep me out more than blood and gore o__O)
Dropped CM and BOTWG. CM as people have said don't give you that 'tension' and BOTWG was getting really boring... and the acting...

I did click play for Rescue me, but my heart still can´t really take it. I am having strange and horrifying nightmares even without that so maybe I should avoid it for now and only see it when my mind is a bit more stable.

Glad to see many comments here about Live Up to Your Name. Loved the first 3 episodes so far! It's a fun breezy watch and the leads have really good chemistry, too. I hope the ratings continue to rise in the following weeks.

Well it's a shame School 2017's ratings are below 5%. IMO they deserve so much more!

I might be in the minority here, but the dramas airing now, really does NOT hold my interest and i dropped almost 6-7 dramas.

1. Bride of water god - dropped
2. Falsify - dropped
3. Reunited worlds- dropped
4. Criminal minds- dropped
5. King loves - never watched any episodes
6. Save Me : watched till last week, but feel like dropping
7. Strongest delivery man : Dropped

The only dramas i am watching are now School 2017( My Taeunho couple) , Manwhole, and Deserving of the name.

This quarter isnt going good..
