Cosmic Girls’ Bona to headline as bubbly teen in Lingerie Girls’ Generation
by tipsymocha
KBS’s new 1970s throwback coming-of-age drama Lingerie Girls’ Generation is busy lining up its cast, and there’s an offer out to Cosmic Girls’ Bona (The Best Hit) to play the lead role. She is currently in the positively considering stage, as is CNBLUE’s Lee Jong-hyun (My Only Love Song, Orange Marmalade).
If she accepts, Bona would play the lively eighteen-year old Lee Jung-hee, the second daughter of the family that owns the local toy factory. Her character is described as the rambunctious type, a bit uncontrollable and sometimes reckless, but who also turns sentimental on a dime if she hears a song she likes. Lol, the articles call her an example of “ultra high-level puberty.” Which should make for a lot of fun for us viewers, though maybe not as much fun for her parents or teachers.
Lee Jung-hee is part of a tight-knit group of teenage girls at her high school in 1970s Daegu, but there’ll be some tension in the gang when a transfer student from Seoul quickly becomes the center of attention. Cue teenage jealousy and rivalry. I’m looking forward to watching how they’ll develop a friendship despite starting off on the wrong foot, especially with the regional city vs. countryside divide.
I wasn’t able to catch The Best Hit as it aired, so I have no reference for Bona’s acting abilities, but it’s promising to hear that she’s actually from Daegu, which should at least give her accent that extra level of authenticity. I’m a little wary about her casting because it’s a lead role and she’s a relative rookie in terms of acting (her only credit is The Best Hit), but I’m trying to be optimistic since I want Lingerie Girls’ Generation to turn out well. And I’ve been surprised enough times before by idols putting in good performances, so here’s to hoping she’ll be a great fit as an energetic, bubbly Daegu teen.
Lingerie Girls’ Generation is in talks to follow School 2017 in KBS’s Monday-Tuesday slot, which would put its premiere in September.

It's starting to remind me more and more of Answer Me with casting idols/rookies who are actually from where (or near) the characters are from. If the director is half as good as Answer Me's than I have hope that this will be a good one!

Yes, but I was thinking of girls whose main profession is actually acting and not those coming from idol groups. A lot of idols immediately land lead roles these days, but I hardly ever read of beginner actresses getting a shot.

Kim Go Eun in Eun Gyo (movie)
Yoon Eun Hye too, she only played leading characters from the start of her acting career.
And of course Eunji who actually won her role in an audition. And unfortunately Suzy, who keeps getting leading roles when she can't act.

But when it comes to dramas in recent years, it seems there's an idol snatching some lead role like every week, even with no acting experience or training - Joy, that Gugudan idol whose name escapes me at the moment, Suzy, Hyeri, Eunji, Minah, Sooyoung, Yoona, Dasom, I could go on forever. Where are the trained actresses? It's not like idol dramas do exceptionally well these days and only a select few of these idols have acting chops. They had auditions for My Sassy Girl and then unceremoniously fired the winner. Whenever they "hold auditions" the role still goes to some idol with 0 experience. Incredible how none of the girls who actually studied acting and auditioned could surpass the idol. It is frankly extremely annoying and frustrating and I'm getting eyesores reading the news lately.

Her drama definitely isn't. That's why it is so strange. Idol's drama often do a lot worse than the ones with actual actors. Plus, idols cost a lot more than some unknown talented actress. Honestly... it feels like idol's drama are one big CFs or fanservice

The problem I think lies with the genre and not the cast. School themed dramas are largely watched by teenagers who watch it online not on TV. School 2017 like School 2015 has high views on Naver three times more than its competitors. It's like SP having high viewers online but not on actual television because youngsters don't use television.
Sejeong has gained more CFs post School 2017 apparently so I think that's the only logical explanation.

Agree, but it's not like all of them suffer from bad ratings. For example (blah) Heirs. Plus, in 70% the ones who suffer have idols as one of the/or both leads (like sassy go go).
In Manhole people's main problem is that 3 from 4 leads are idols.
I do believe idols have more star power than actors, but their fans don't bother watching 16 hours of them trying to act. Searching them on Never is as far as it goes.

Sadly for dramas, its been such a loooong time since a rookie actress got the lead role. I think it was circa 2012-2013 with Han Groo for Girl K, Han Yeonsoo for Monstar and of course Jo Boa as you've mentioned. The past few years its been idols left and right, urghhh...
Though for Kmovies, Ive been quite happy with them getting rookie actresses like Kim Goeun for A Muse, Park Sodam for The Priests, Kim Taeri for The Handmaiden and Chae Soojin with Will You Be There, and the leads for spirit's homecoming.
And slowly these actresses are moving to take lead roles in dramas as well is so awesome...
i hope most of them do grace the dramas with their talent more now...

Oh yes, how could I forget Han Groo and Ha Yeonsoo! The only consolation for idoldom conquering dramaland is having so many movie actresses cross over or returning to the small screen lately, otherwise this state of affairs would be really really sad.

Thankfully there are more actresses (not idols) getting lead roles these days, little by little the idol actors are getting bumped out of public broadcast lead roles.
In the last year alone Nam Ji Hyun, Chae Soo Bin, Kim Ji Won, Park So Dam, Seo Hyun Jin, Lee Sung Kyung (I know she's a model but at least not an idol) got public broadcast weekday lead roles for the first time in dramas. And even the child actresses Kim Yoo Jung and Kim So Hyun grew up and got leading roles....
I am ready for these girls to come and end the type of useless idol-actors who can't act, I don't mind the ones like Eunji, Sooyoung, Minah or even Sejung because at least they give decent performance but please less of the type of idol actresses who see acting only as a way to raise their status or get CFs. No one needs more Krystals or Suzys or that Orange Marmalade girl who mumbles, in lead roles.

GIRL WHO MUMBLES hahaha. Seolhyun is so bad my mind must have repressed her name on purpose. She was supposed to be on the list too. You're right, all these girls are great and paid their dues before landing a lead (and even then you'd get netizens complaining) and/or have real acting skills to deserve it right off the bat. No one handed them a main role out of thin air just for their market value alone. It just annoys me when they have to stick it out in secondary or tertiary roles for lord knows how long while the likes of Suzy waltz their way through drama after drama as leads so easily. I know dramas aren't some supreme art form but I wish they would show some respect for the work involved and the acting profession and hire people who are at least decent at it, idols or not.

Actually LKS & PSD are not well liked in Korea which is why LKS had to back out of SP because the negative comments were overpowering. There are still more idols than actors in dramas today. Hyeri opp JJS, Uee, Nara in SP, Jaejoong, Yunho, Yesung in Voice (not a lead I know but he was an important part of the show), Infinite L, Baro, Seo Kang Joon, Gongmyung, Krystal, Suzy. And the Year isn't even over yet there is plenty of drama still to cast.

Her case is a bit special, she made her debut in Chungmuro and the movie was a big deal at that, so it wasn't very surprising she was offered a lead in a drama. I can think of some other fresh faces as far as movies go, but a lot less for drama castings.
I also remembered Go Seung Hee for that Night Watchmen drama, I believe she was only in Miss Korea before that.

Well @tipsymocha, I did watch The Best Hit as it aired. I can say her role was minor to say the least (if I were cruel I'd say it was a total waste, but that's the writer's fault), but still, her acting was stiff. Yeah I don't feel sorry for KBS anymore, they keep casting idols in their dramas, so it's natural that lately most of their dramas have been getting lower ratings, like best hit, school 2017 [although I love the leads, I still feel something is missing], so disappointed with the casting when the story seemed so much promising.

None of the people you mentioned are rookies. Some are even Hallyu stars and the rest are all established in their own ways. Rookie actors are like what Ji Soo used to be. There aren't enough good rookie actors either to fill the spots so idols have to be bought in. The Solomon Perjury kid who is now in School 2017 is pretty unimpressive. He can act but he's not amazing at it. I think idols like D.O. have proven that rookie actors aren't the only ones capable of acting. And many idols are trained as actors or have enrolled in theatre/film at their college like Cha Eun Woo from Best Hit.

I love and appreciate @tipsymocha's optimism, I do, but I can't deny my extreme disappointment in the casting for this drama so far. At first, my only hesitations for this drama was the dark side of its plot, while I was wholeheartedly ready for the friendship aspect of the show. NOW I have to cope with the mediocre casting. Sorry, Jong-hyun. I would've most likely reacted the same way to any of your other group members. Even Yong-hwa. Love your band and your guys' music, though. Anyways, if they were aiming for idols, at least choose the ones that have proven themselves to be good and decent actors, like Jung Eun-ji, Yook Sung-jae, Im Shi-wan, Park Hyung-shik, Yoon Doo-joon, Minah, Lee Joon, and D.O. Anyone else worth mentioning? And of course, I'm not considering the fact that some of the names I've listed may not be available due to other projects and obligations. Those are just some of my personal favorite idol actors. C'mon Show, at least try–harder! I won't give up on you just yet. Just reel me in from ep 1, okay?

Why? Why do they keep doing this? It's not fair to other actors and not fair to us as viewers to cast ppl just because they're an idol. I thought this drama is female centric so the focus is to cast female characters first, but no. They casted Jonghyun first, then Bona, also they have already casted another male idol (I forgot who he is).
School 2017 is full of rookies as well, but Kim Jung Hyun and Jang Dong Yoon actually have proved that they have potential from their previous works. The only idols are Sejeong, Ro-woon, and the one who is acting as Yu Bitna. Sunhwa on the other hand is a different case because she is not a rookie anymore.
There are differences between real rookie actors and rookie idols turn actors, some of these rookie actors might have attended /attending acting class or courses for example. Their full focus is also for acting. Idols are different, they are coming from different field, they are basically have been trained to be a singer and dancer for years. Of course if the talent is there, it can work out. But as we can see, it's not always the case.
Bona didn't left a strong impression in TBH. Maybe she can do better in this drama so who knows. It seems like they are rushing to finalize the castings since they need to start shooting soon (School 2017 is already done with first half).

I only saw the first few eps of School 2017 but I thought Kim Se Jung was ok as the female lead, she suits the role well and not stiff, like her face is expressive and she makes the character charming.
And the Bit Na girl is the bitchy one, right? Wasn't she Baekhyun's wife from Moon Lovers? Must be a good actress if she can play such different characters.
I don't know who Ro Woon is though. None of the guys other than Tae Woon and Dae Hwi's left an impression on me. Unless he was the guy who flirts with Eun Ho's friend?

Sejeong is pleasantly surprised in this role and she is charming as well, kinda remind me when I first watched Eunji acted. But tbh I would have never started this drama if both male leads are rookie idol turn to actors.
I don't know about her performance in Moon Lovers but she is doing well in this bitchy role, to the extend I want to get rid of her lol. But so far it's just one layered character, so I can't really think highly about her acting. I wished this drama focused more on the actual bully gang instead of some bratty rich kid, Han Seung Ri is far better actress and has many experiences as child actress. She is now just really get sidelined, and only appear like once or twice a week in few seconds. I was hoping for her to get a little more attention in this drama.
Ro Woon is Issue, the idol. He barely had any screentime so far, but yes he will involve in love triangle with Sarang, Eun Ho's friend. Maybe it will start in upcoming epi.
