Premiere Watch: Falsify, Criminal Minds

Get ready for the criminal element to make its presence known this week, with the addition of two crime-n-corruption-filled shows ready to hit the air. Overall, I think these shows round out our current lineup nicely, in terms of diversity of genres and styles—we’ve got our rom-com, sageuk romance, fantasy, melodrama, and slice-of-life bases covered. And if it feels like your watchlist just got an extra bit more crowded, it’s not in your head: tvN is adding an extra show with its new Wednesday-Thursday block. More dramas for everyone!

Falsify

Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: SBS
Genre: Legal thriller
Episode count: 32 (half-hour episodes, 16 hours in total)

Reasons to watch: Namgoong Min is setting aside his wacky 4-D side to go serious again, and while I’ll miss his unique sense of humor, he is really quite strong dramatically as well; his career revitalization came through playing fearsome psychopaths. He’ll be on the other side of the law here, playing a reporter navigating a minefield of corruption and abuse of the law. When he finds his path blocked when the news organizations conspire to withhold the truth, he decides to do things his own way—and a righteously angry rogue Namgoong Min ought to be a fierce thing to behold.

The PD and writer are relatively new, so they are a bit of a question mark. But despite their relative inexperience we’ve got a solid cast all around, with Eom Ji-won playing a badass prosecutor who’s fired up over the corruptions and cover-ups in her own office, while Yoo Joon-sang and Jeon Hye-bin play fellow journalists. I find that shows like this depend heavily on hitting the right balance between throwing up challenging obstacles for our protagonists and letting them make gains once in a while, because nobody likes watching them get beaten down all the time. Here’s to hoping Falsify delivers a fresh stream of gratifying twists and counterstrikes to keep the plot moving.

Criminal Minds

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Crime procedural, thriller
Episode count: 20

Reasons to watch: Lee Jun-ki! Moon Chae-won! Sohn Hyun-joo! Come on, we’re gonna watch this, right?

Okay, so Lee Jun-ki and Moon Chae-won have both chosen some clunkers in the past. But Criminal Minds puts them on solid ground—he’s fantastic in action thrillers, both historical and modern, and he’ll be the hotblooded profiler while she’s the cool-headed teammate he clashes and bickers with. Sohn Hyun-joo is one of those veterans with tremendous range who is strong in every role, and this time he’ll put his gravitas to good use as the leader of the team.

More than the cast, though, I have faith in the production team. Hollywood-to-Hallyu remakes can be a tricky beast, but PD Lee Jung-hyo handled last year’s The Good Wife adaptation with a lot of skill and style. He’s also got cult noir hit Heartless City on his resumé, so while he’s listed as the second director here, I feel like we’ll get to see his slick style come through. The other PD is Yang Yoon-ho, who was the second director on blockbuster action thriller IRIS. And writing is Hong Seung-hyun, who wrote both seasons of the thriller Ghost-seeing Detective Cheo Yong and was one of the team of writers on the clever sci-fi historical thriller Joseon X-Files, one of my favorite dramas of all time. We’re in good hands here! (Knock on wood.)

Does anyone know who is licensed to sub these shows in NA? If I understand this kocowa thing correctly, Falsify (SBS) will be there and not on viki nor DF. Problem!

Problem indeed!!! Not liking their service at all so far. I contacted them with a question - never heard back. The app finally came out (yesterday it seams) in the Apple store, but they blocked you from being able to cast it through your Appletv. Really?!? If you don't have an app for Roku, Appletv etc yet, at least let us cast it to our tvs. I don't enjoy watching it on my phone thankyouverymuch. End mini rant.

Just read that the smart tv app will be released later this year. It'll probably be too late by then, people will have moved on.

They don't allow you to Chromecast it either. This is a big mistake.

Yes!! At least allow casting!! Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon, arguably the biggest online streaming content providers, allow this. Why does Kocowa think they are better than them? I know I am salty, but you don't mess with me and my Kdramas!!!

If you have a smart tv you can hook up an HDMI cable form your computer to your TV and watch it that way....

I'm not happy about this option either. I can see why they are doing it... It's big money...They must know it...They charge more than Viki and DF for streaming. If they have control on what can be distributed outside of themselves... It will force people who want to watch these dramas to switch over or opt to go to pirate sites.

I pay for an annual subscription to DF, Viki, amazon prime and netflix...I don't know if I want to add another option to the lineup.

I am curious why Criminal Minds isn't licensed anywhere as far as I can tell in the US or EU...It's a TVN drama...Why are they holding onto it???

What I don't understand is they (or parent company?) said they are partnered with viki and DF (and Dramabeans for that matter!) as well - very confused at this point and not happy either... kcpglob.com

To my understanding they "partnered" with the main Korean broadcasting channels eg. KBS. I do not believe Dramafever and Viki are related in anyway. So essentially, Kocowa can and may have a monopoly on all kdramas from the 3 major broadcasters. As KBS etc. will no longer license their dramas to DF or Viki when they have their own drama streaming service. I am sort of disillusioned with them. I have my free month - they have 27 more days to convince me I should pay for continued service.

Same.. I signed up for the free month. If they don't get their act together I think many will end up going back to the pirate/unlicensed sites, even though the video quality often sucks.

On kcpglob.com they say "You can also meet Kocowa in our global partners Viki, DramaFever, On Demand Korea, Dramabeans". Idk how that's going to work though. Kocowa is owned by the big 3 to distribute their content, effectively cutting out the competition, ie the aforementioned providers. How can you be partners with your competition?

The consumer is the one getting screwed. Higher prices for less. You can only have 4 devices registered per account. They really should follow Netflix's business model. Have as many devices as you want per account but allow only a certain number of simultaneous viewing. I have 3 devices just to myself so this service is not for me. In my house alone there are 3 cell phones, 3 laptops, 2 tablets, 2 Chromecast, 1 smart tv and 1blu-ray player with the Dramafever app. Never more than 2 people watching at once though. So by Kocowa's logic I have to pay for double the service because I have more than 4 devices. No thank you.

Required fields are marked *

What they don't get is we subscribe to a service like DF because it has almost everything. We don't want to pay a monthly subscription for a drama we're not sure we'll even like.
And they're renaming some of the shows (like Netflix does) so Falsify is something else. I was mildly interested in watching, but not now. Just like I didn't bother to watch Man to Man once it finally came out on Netflix.

1

I don't understand their renaming. "Falsify" 1st episode up on their site under the name "Distorted".

1

Those are the english version of the names. I have never understood that. There are quite a few shows with different English names.

I'll say. I watch DF and VIKI thru Roku and don't want to pay for yet another channel that I'll watch one show on. I knew something was up when both DF and VIKI suddenly seemed to offer only old movies, Chinese dramas a few kdramas. I noticed on the KOCOWA site that Dramabeans is partnered with them too. What does that even mean! I cancelled satellite not too long ago because all I watch is VIKI and DF on ROKU and it's too expensive to pay satellite for nothing. But to pay 3 sites that offer kdramas to watch one new one, no thanks.

Required fields are marked *

Right?? I too got rid of cable and already have a bazillion subscription services. Why do I need one more that only offers one show that I want to watch and the rest are available on DF. They don't even have a large selection. Unless they plan on revoking all the licenses from DF and Viki in order to host their whole catalog exclusively. Again, I cry monopoly. They can charge whatever they want, have the worst service options etc, because they can control the whole market. I may be jumping ahead of myself, but Kocowa just doesn't sit well with me...

"Unless they plan on revoking all the licenses from DF and Viki in order to host their whole catalog exclusively."

That's exactly what they are doing. I think they will let DF and Viki have a few shows here and there just so it can't be considered a monopoly.

This is going to be a big ole mess. I'm curious to see how many people jump ship over to Kocowa. They've already left a bad taste in my mouth with the pricing and the lies for the GD promo.

Big problem. I'm not paying for a crappy app which won't allow me to cast to my television or load it onto all of my devices. I'll just wait for the drama to be over & buy it as a licensed Malaysian box set. Yeah, the subs aren't as good, but at least they're they're not trying to make it more difficult for me to watch shows.

All three will not broadcast the drama. Remakes of American drama never gets the right to be aired in America. Boggles my mind. It happened in The Good Wife and Entourage. I see the same thing to happen with Criminal Minds.

Viki is trying though, by promoting the drama in Soompi. I've seen several articles about the drama already. Dramafever is not even trying.

I  can't believe I'm saying this, FOS is now the best kdrama I've ever watched!! It's just so good...every elements of this drama is so excellent... I can't remember any other drama that was this good!! Everything else fall so short comparing to this... this the 1st time I'm wishing for a 2nd season...

8

reply

Required fields are marked *

What makes FOS so unique is that it's a 16 hour film. Other dramas in the same genre uses an episodic format; every episode introduces a new story, which will fit into the main storyline, but FOS is 16 episodes about 1 storyline and every minute is absolutely engaging and unpredictable; it was never repetitive. It's an incredible achievement of creative and skilled writing/directing/editing.

I'm going to have major withdrawals.

I'll definitely check out Falsify and Criminal Minds, but I can't imagine another drama surpassing FOS in this regard.

Good observation @ news. Yes focusing on single crim story needs a very strong writer and director to keep audiences engaged. For example that was a drama 2 years ago (Pride and Prejudice, weird name I know)... it has similar story as the main plot, but it was filled with many other side stories... that drama was good, but FOS in comparison is PERFECTION. FOS is not comparable with Signal for example... because Signal had many flaws including very medicore acting LJH. But FOS is close to flawless...

Required fields are marked *

I am now very very intrigued. FOS got rave reviews from HeadsNo2, which would've been enough, but you're implying it's better than Signal (?), so I'm all ears!

2

I liked Signal, Tunnel and Punch, but FOS holds a very special place.

I would have to watch Hanzawa Naoki again to see if I rate it the same as FOS, but the ending was so awesome. The best thing about Japanese dramas is that they're 10-12 episodes, so HZ was full of surprises all the way to the end. I agree it deserves 42.2% at its highest rating.

3

I didn't expect to see a drama better than Dignal but FOS simply excels in every drama department, now that only two more episodes to go and the writer has surely demonstrated a tight and full plot with assured hands. I dread the upcoming withdrawal as having dropped all other dramas since starting FOS.

Finished watching Ep 14 last night which had a most powerful drama moment in recent memory that I couldn't get it out of my head.....

Falsify will be the first drama where I'll see Namgoong Min playing a "serious" character (watched only Beautiful Gong Shim and Chief Kim) , I hope that the writting and production do not get lost in the process. Regarding Criminal Minds, this cast is awesome very good actors, reading JB post I see that we also got a pretty strong team for writting and production so I strongly believe I'll appreciate it as much as I appreciated Two weeks ❤. On the other hand, I think that my heart will stress out a lot with these two, esp. Criminal minds ?

But all that aside I am soooo keen for both of these premiers~!! I have totally turned from a rom com into a thriller lover I have no idea why but I am down for some nitty gritty crime cracking.

And some amazing villains. COME AT ME SHOWS!!!

Same again! I used to tune in to rom-com and fantasy dramas. Now, I'm so excited to watch crime and thriller! I don't know what changed either. But I know that the Good ones are SO good!!! (I still watch rom-coms and all the other genres btw...just a lot more excited for thrillers and mysteries nowadays). And I love a good villain!
Fell in love with Namgoong Min ever since Girl Who Sees Smells. He was so amazing and creepily smart that I had goosebumps watching his scenes! And then he was in Remember: Son's War where he played another villain..just as awesome!
So looking forward to him in Falsify as a righteous rogue, hah!
Criminal Minds is another drama that I've been looking forward to. Not because I know the American version (I have almost no clue what it's about..other than what I've read from the promo materials), but because of its cast! Moon Chae Won and Lee Jun Ki are personal favourites and I can't wait to see them butting heads and working together to solve the cases coming their way!???

I have to admit I am interested in the relationships that they will have each of the characters to have~ Because for me the best part of the show is all the strain and love and care and all these different emotions that the main cast go through during each of the episodes >////////< AAAH IT IS SO MUCH FUUUUUUUUUN!!!!

Criminal Minds - I'm trying to have the low expectation, by thinking this is not a remake and they only using the same title. Solid casts for both shows so definitely don't have to worry much on the acting dept.

Lee Jun Ki & Jeon Hye Bin are having a drama at the same time, could it be a coincidence or they planned it? lol.

Oh! I didn't know about the production team - wow, seems like this will be a really good cop show - and not just because it has Lee Joon-gi solving crimes. :)

Seeing as how most of my shows just ended, this is timed perfectly.

I'm so curious about Korea remake of Criminal Minds and especially the main lead is Lee Jun-ki! This guy was born to be an action actor. I know there's a lot of action actors but he's totally my style lol. And, yahoooooo~~~ Namgoong Min is one of an irresistible actor in the industry.. He's super hot and cute... and weird in handsome ways hahaha..

Two talented actors on my screen, tempting me with thriller drama there's no way to refuse... I will give shoot for these two~~~

And to think I was worried about DF being sold to ATT&T which would make it available only on Direct TV. Instead, this is what we get. Bleh.

Btw, JB should've put Oh Jung-se into the reasons to watch Falsify, because I'd immediately sign up after seeing his name.

Amen! Both Lee Junki and Moon Chaewon are seasoned and great actors. I expect them to give life and more to their respective characters. I haven't watched the first episode yet, but I have high expectations based on the experts comprising the Criminal Minds team. Looking forward to a great show! And oh, I hope javabeans or girlfriday will do the recap on this one.

I already saw the first episode and I'm quite disappointed to be honest. The CGI looks like it was done 5 years ago because it looked sloppy. The cutting of scenes were awkward and the continuity of the scenes were off. The PD's were supposedly good so what happened?
