Ha Ji-won becomes a surgeon onboard the Hospital Ship

A few stills of the new medical human drama Hospital Ship have been released, and we get our first look at Ha Ji-won (The Time I’ve Loved You) as a surgeon, as well as some of the rest of the cast and crew as they performed the traditional prayer ceremony to wish for the show’s success.

I was vaguely surprised to hear that this will be Ha Ji-won’s first role as a doctor, since the occupation is such a common one in dramaland and she’s been in the industry for a while now. It was reported that she’s been shadowing actual surgeons and studying documentaries and videos of surgeries to prepare for her role. It’s nice to hear that she’s directing her energy to learn more about being a doctor, just as she would prepare for all of her own stunts in the films and dramas that made her an action star. It’s not like actors need to know how to actually be a surgeon to play one but that extra effort is always good to see.

Medical dramas aren’t my favorite genre, but the premise is unusual enough for me to look forward to it, and the focus seems to be more on the human stories rather than actual doctoring. Ha Ji-won, accompanied by doctors Kang Min-hyuk (Entertainer) and Lee Seo-won (The Liar and His Lover), will travel from island to island by boat to treat patients who otherwise have no access to medical assistance. I’ve found hospital dramas in general to be quite a cold genre, so it’ll be interesting to watch one that’s set up to be full of warmth and heart as these doctors get to learn more about the islands’ small-town inhabitants.

Hospital Ship will follow currently airing Man Who Dies to Live on MBC’s Wednesday-Thursday slot.

Me too. She's one of my first and forever favorites and I want her to do well at everything. I hope this drama is really good so that people can move on from Tim We Were Not In Love even though I really liked that show.

Man, Ha Ji-won has such a terrible track record in picking dramas. Her last one was a huge disappointment, and from the cast alone, this one is already doomed.

I'd like to see her again in a project that doesn't suck.

Empress Ki was a huge success. I think the project being noted was The Time I was Not In Love or something like that. The source material was one of the most popular dramas of the year when it came out in Taiwan and won oodles of awards so it probably seemed like a good idea to be in the k-drama version.

and it is weird.. because taiwaenese version is such a slow burn but really really really awesome

But this one.. ti was so boring from the moment go..

plus i really want to see HJW in a role where she doesn't do her forceful aegyo.. not even once

LOL you should check her other works. Most of her roles are not something like in The Time We Were Not In Love. I also can't stand her with her aegyo in this drama.

She has done so many projects since she debuted before 2000, there are many of her projects you can choose to watch if you're interested.

I won't call her track record terrible, considering the hits shes been churning out consistently, I'd say TTWWNIL was a horrible misstep, but no her film track record is actually worse.

Why would you believe some claims so easily? She's widely popular in her country and by international viewers; what more does she need to be famous and successful.

I think it was What Happened in Bali with Jo In-sung that made her a big name. It's unfortunate, but some actors/actresses do get bad luck stuck with mediocre/poor projects that underutilize their ability (e.g. Gong Yoo in Big or Kim Woo-bin in Uncontrollably Fond). If a project's going to fail, despite how good the main actor/actress is, there's still a 80% chance it'll fail anyway. Having said that, I really want Ha Ji-won to return onscreen again. She's at her best in sageuks like Hwang Jin-yi and Empress Ki, I must admit, but there are some gems in her modern works like Secret Garden.

She is my number one actress. her projects are good. only bad one was The Time We Were Not In Love where she lacked chemistry with the male lead who is bland to me. below dramas pure gems.
Empress Ki (MBC, 2013)
The King 2 Hearts (MBC, 2012)
Secret Garden (SBS, 2010)
Hwang Jin Yi (KBS2, 2006)
What Happened in Bali (SBS, 2004)
Damo (MBC, 2003)

Watch her in the King2Hearts! You will appreciate her talent. The Drama was a Bomb! Must see...

I'm also one of those that usually shun medical dramas, but will have to try this for HJW. I did see the clips of her learning how to scrub up in the OT and intubating so that seems promising though.

I've seen the writer's past works (Secret Door and Hwang Jin-Yi), and the focus wasn't on the romance, so I hope there isn't any between the two leads.

I think learning more about the islands’ small-town inhabitants, their stories, lifestyle, etc would be a lot more interesting.

I may be wrong but I don't think there have been too many dramas involving life on the different islands off the coast of South Korea. The last one I recall watching, which involved characters living on one of the islands was Thank You, which was a drama that aired years ago. ..... If the drama is one which combines both the island life, the doctors' lives and the medical situations in an interesting way, it may prove to be entertaining.

The J drama Clinic on the sea was focused more on relationships, as the doctor was ready to chuck it all every week as he meets the latest "love of his life" , done in a comedic way. Yeah, so not so much life or death OR scenes.

That would be a break from the typical med drama. The J nurse character played by Emi Takei actually would be the sort of character one would expect from HI Ji Won.
A no nonsense sort , she chastises the doctor to get his head out of the clouds when it comes to love. She also treated the doctor a martial arts beatdown on their initial meeting.

Ok, from your description it sounds like Clinic On The Sea is something I'd be willing to check out. *adding it to the To Watch Later List*

And yes, if Hospital Ship were to be similar to the drama you mentioned, it would most certainly be a nice change of pace!

CLOUD STAIRCASE / CLOUD STAIRS is a medical drama that unfolds for a goodly length of time at a clinic on a island. It is Shin Dong-wook's debut drama from 2006 -- the same year as SOUL MATE. I watched it a couple of months ago.

Miss her terribly and looking forward to this one. She is such a committed actress always taking the trouble to research to make herself look more credible in the role she plays out. In this instance she even shadows a doctor instead of just let the white gown she wears pass her off as a doctor. Im amazed at her efforts and will support her rain or shine, high or low ratings.

This reminds me of 2013 J-drama "Clinic on the Sea"

Doctor Kota Sezaki (Shota Matsuda) works on a clinic ship, which sails around the Seto Inland Sea. He treats patient around and help them with medical assistant, the differences probably that his character easily falls in love with someone he met on the Island

Yas! Ha Jiwon, I love her so much & unlike you I'm fond of medical dramas (maybe because I once dreamed of becoming one haha) so this is exciting. Though, I'm not enthusiastic of her leading man. I like Kang Minhyuk but I don't know, it just doesn't feel right to me. :)

I'm on the road to being in the medical field and that's actually why I don't usually like medical dramas, lol ? Suspending your disbelief gets harder the more you know about a subject, I think! And I generally don't like procedural shows, which most medical dramas are, so there is also that.

Medical dramas are a hit or miss for me and I generally find them all pretty predictable, but the fact this one will be OUTSIDE of the hospital setting definitely interests me! While there are heartwarming moments in medical dramas, I have to agree there is something still cold about it. It could be due to the hospital hierarchy and power struggles often present in medical dramas. Hopefully this drama will avoid all that nonsense?

Agreed - they can be good, but they can also be very bad. Far too many devolve into the tired old trope of hero X seeking the "truth", falling in love with hero Y (who just happens to be the offspring of the evil doctor that killed the pet dog or something). Will wait and see on this one.

Not all medical dramas are cold. Romantic Teacher Doctor Kim was the most heart-warming one I’ve ever seen. I’m usually not a fan of this genre, but RTDK opened my eyes. Loved it.

Excited to see Ha Ji Won in a new drama.
I hope this one turns out well for her.

Ha Ji Won looks so pretty =)

Now that I see the plot, it's curious how there's parallels with the tvn variety Minhyuk's bandmate Yonghwa is starring in right now with Kang Ho Dong and Kim Hee Sun (Island Trio).
A cameo of the three in one of the islands would be cool =P

Ha ji won is back! Perhaps I am one of the happiest people who is looking forward to see HJW in a new drama. As she stated in one of her interviews, rating is the least of her concerns when signing up and choosing a drama at this point of her career. She is not a ratings queen and national actress for nothing. Indeed, she has nothing to prove anymore especially with the varied genres (and top notch ratings- sans one drama) of her dramas and film. Until now, she is part of a handful and privileged actresses that had surpassed 10M ticket sales in Chungmuro (Korean film/Hollywood) and worked with gorgeous and famous actors in Korea. Daesang and best actress for a couple or more of her performances. Seeing her dedication in learning about being a surgeon is admirable. Her dedication and love of craft is incomparable. She is famous not only because of her beauty but for her talent, passion, dedication and humility.
I know a lot of people hated TTILWY (which is really I wonder since it was quite a realistic take on friendship and love, but that is just me) but she and the rest of the actors put their heart into it. And I applaud her for that as well. Having said all that, I wish and pray that this drama will touch people's hearts as what HJW aspire to do. Fighting my queen HWJ!
