Drama viewership ratings for the week of July 10-16, 2017

And so one cycle ends, and another begins. There were oodles of finales this week, starting with Fight My Way, which ended in first place (among its drama competitors) at a very impressive 13.8%. Lookout finally broke double digits with its finale, leaving My Sassy Girl to bring up the rear at 8.7%, though it’s worth noting that everyone did pretty well in the Monday-Tuesday slot. With all the new shows starting next week, it’ll be anyone’s guess as to how the numbers will shake out.

Circle’s replacement drama, Bride of the Water God 2017, is already pulling in higher numbers than its predecessor did, managing to rise to back up to 3.5% this week after an initial drop in Episode 3.

And over in the middle of the week, Ruler—Master of the Mask ended at 14.4%, leaving Suspicious Partner to end just short of the double digit mark at 9.5%. As for the weekend shows, Woman of Dignity continues to see a rise in numbers, so if that show can do it, here’s hoping that Forest of Secrets sees an uptick—it certainly deserves it (but doesn’t need it, since we all know it’s awesome).

ok but why does seven day queen have such low ratings???

as I read the comment in other discussions before, their reason can be ;

- no household name, they are all known actor but not known as a hit-maker and they started pretty late since ruler, another saeguk already at the same time slot .
[why I put this 1st because I do remember that jak ok jung is a pretty hated character but in jang ok jung with yoo ah in and kim tae hee, it was well known],
also the writer is a newcomer [ an excellent one]

- the story is closely on the hated king and people don't like seeing it get romanticised,
to be fair, I find the king is as crazy as it needs to be in this timeline, he did kill a lot of people for no real reason aside than "mood" and sleep with many gisaeng

- it's a heartbreaking story, sad story that guaranteed a sad ending, not many people want to gamble on that or even want to see a sad story

Too much reason that can't love it:
- The story kind of frustrating, they solved problem not really logical.
- Annyoing voice from child female lead.
- The directing is so bad in killer scenes, action scenes.
- The camera is so lagging, kind of distracting to watch.
- Preview for first eps? Why they show scenes that next ep don't show.
- ...

The 'annoying voice' that you are referring to is part of acting. The young Chae-gyung grew up in the countryside so she has that accent. I personally think its charming.

I am sorry to comment like I am beaten the dead horse but I can't see how the camera is lagging or bad in the action scenes, can you say when it happens?

One of the things that I appreciate a lot in this drama is how clear the action scenes showed. When the fighting happens in a muddy place and has a lot of body roll, the view is as blurry as the character so we can see how every move can't be precise and how people can get stabbed accidentally like in the ep after Yeok needs to go to the countryside.

When the fight is in clear ground and precise we see who hurts whom and how it happened, like the arrow scenes and the confrontation.

If what you mean is the "looked at the floor angle" when someone is slashed, it because of the PG 15, can't do much about it.

For all respect, I can see why it's not for everyone but I can't see that the directing is why people can't love it.

Also, I am not sure if we preview make us can't love something, yes it's frustrating but many drama previews also misleading from the actual things that happen and I think we all know that preview isn't mean to be taken literally, besides this drama had been doing it from the starts, that's the style they choose and we are not unguarded.

If someone don't like your favorite, that's not means that you better than them. Favorite is just something that hard to explain. For a drama or movie or anything else, there's must be at least a viewer/people love it, that doesn't mean anything.

Sadly much truth in that. It is one reason why we get so many mediocre shows full of idols and popular stars. The companies are relying on star power instead of good writing and directing too much.

2

I agree that any drama/movie will still have people who love it. And everyone's entitled to their own opinion. However, saying 'favorite' is hard to explain? There can be logical reasons as to why something is favorite. Like, writing, acting, directing, etc. I apologize if what I said came out as me saying I'm better than others. I didn't mean that way.

LOL this is rating thread - obviously ppl are talking about rating (low or high rating) regardless how repetitive it is. Maybe the original poster didn't follow the previous thread so he/she has no idea.

This is just my perspective but I liked Park Minyoung so I was pretty interested in 7DQ and anticipating the release of the drama.

However the first episode really threw things off for me. I went in expecting a tragic love story, but the first few minutes consisted of really lowbrow humor like making a donkey(?) poop and boys spying on bathing women. The tonal whiplash was huge, and I wasn't interested in that kind of comedy at all, so I stopped watching.

Obviously it takes a while for a show to set things up and get the plot moving, but first impressions are really important. There's so many other options for entertainment that not many people are willing to waste several hours on a show before deciding if it's worth watching.

Required fields are marked *

That mixture of lowbrow humor and high tragedy is very characteristic of sageuk though, I can't think of a single sageuk that doesn't have it to some degree. Just look at King and Clown which is set in the very same historical period. It's very Shakespearean actually, calling it tonal whiplash when it is actually a feature of the genre is imo a misnomer.

> I went in expecting a tragic love story

I think the 1st episode actually make it quite tragic as they show what the show gonna be, the beginning is intense like how park min young with tears want to stab yeon woo jin while hugging him,
iirc, they also have the intense sign of cruelty by yeonsangun, the horse ride that is intense, the hate love to the boy who just wants to do a ceremony on his own?
1st episode is introduction, isn't it too much to ask for tragedy even when we don't know who is who.

> Obviously it takes a while for a show to set things up and get the plot moving, but first impressions are really important.

you've said it, it takes a while yet the almost stab you while hugging isn't a plot?
I mean, it's the 1st ep, shouldn't you wait if you know it takes a while?
the child story does take a while but it also tragic,

I am sorry that I couldn't understand how that early minutes is what makes the most memorable in the 1st impression as opposed to what gonna happen in the future that we've seen in the opening (the almost stab you while being queen- things),
the complete opposition is the tragedy that they want to convey

How do you expect it to be tragic off the bat...Even in other tragic sageuks you still need the introduction and usually it is a bit lighthearted in the beginning. At least in this drama it shows how tragic it will be right from the opening (most just start off being all happy lol). I mean i respect that this might have not been the drama/humor for you, but I think it is a bit much to expect tragedy, angst, and heartbreak from the very beginning. If you aren't willing to "waste time" watching to see if it is worth it just wait for the drama to finish or reach it's climax. I purposely didn't start 7DQ until 14 episodes were aired already cause I know sageuks take a long time to get to the climax and interesting portion of the plot. You can't expect a 20 ep drama to get dramatic from the start...you need character development and buildup.

I don't expect it to be tragic right off the bat. In fact my favorite genre of dramas is sageuk/period dramas, so I'm more than familiar with the fact that things tend to start out light. In fact, humorous happy moments are great for making the inevitable tragedy that much more heart-wrenching. Personally I just thought that the style of comedy they went for was too "cheap", the type of humor I tend to associate with lower budget dramas' attempts to draw laughter, which made me disinterested.

I'm getting replies telling me I should've waited for the drama to develop first, but I think they're missing my point. The original poster was wondering why the ratings were so low. I was providing an example of how the drama's first episode could've lost them many potential viewers such as myself. If a show wants high ratings, it needs to prove to the viewers that its worth their time. Posting comments on the internet telling people they're watching it "wrong" isn't going to change the fact that they won't watch a show they don't enjoy, regardless of their reasoning.

Ruler is definitely a lesson in pre-release hype. Months and months of promotion, mediaplay comparing it to Moonlight Drawn By Clouds and Moon That Embraces the Sun and Game of Thrones (lol!), making 20% ratings promises and in the end it was mostly a mess and couldn't even get to 15% nevermind 20%. The numbers are good especially considering what a huge disappointment the drama turned out to be but MBC were obviously expecting much better.

Daesang winners til now :
1st place SBS - Defendant - Ji Sung 28.8%
2nd place KBS - Chief Kim -NGM 18.3%
3rd place MBC - Ruler - No idea who :P 14.4%

Best in cable :
OCN - Tunnel
TVN - (goblin?) Forest of secrets
JTBC - Strong Woman Do Bong Soon

Maybe by Autumn or Winter one of these dramas will get dethroned.
Although I really doubt anything can beat Defendant on SBS :)

The writing for Ruler started out very strong and then lost it for most of the drama and then was very good again towards the end. I watched the entire drama and happy that I did because the actors did a great job portraying what was written. The ratings beat the other dramas in their time slot every week so the Korean viewers seemed to be happy with it and of course it had star power which helped but also the overwhelming majority of the viewers on drama fever loved it, so you would have to watch it yourself to make up your own mind. I personally do not go by what others say because I have had dramas recommended to me and ended up disappointed.

2

I think the only people who endured and even like it are YSH's fans. KSH's fans probably wished she never accepted this role. I have not seen such terrible writing in a long while and the PD just made things worse.

3

KSH has a long cameo role, maybe 5 minutes every episode

2

I agree with reene. I don't think it was spectacular by any means, but I don't think its faults are any worse than those of the average drama. I suppose if you only read comments on this site, it'd be one of the worst shows ever. But I also tend to notice that opinions here are often heavily bandwagoned one way or another, and not always reflective of what the actual viewers feel if you look at the ratings. So it's best to form your own opinion. As far as I'm concerned, Ruler told a story that I enjoyed, so the show is a positive in my books.

I went into the show as a fan of KSH. I didn't even know who YSH was. But I still finished the entire show and enjoyed most of it. Perhaps if I delved in the politics of which actor got how much screentime and character development I'd be more upset with the show? But then again, I'm watching the show for the story, not as KSH's agent, so it didn't bother me that much.

1

?????

I would love to give it to Kim Sang Joong as well, because in my opinion, aside from a good writing and acting in this drama, he is one of familiar veterans who can bring viewers to watch a sageuk and he only left the show after the rating was stabled. But if it is based on votes, I don't think he can get it. Maybe the best award MBC will give him is Lifetime Achievement Award (or something like this).

Haha I'm no longer that care about Daesang for year end awards started from when they selected two winners for Daesang - Kim Myung Min & Song Seung Heon in 2008 & the next one Han Hyo Joo & Kim Nam Joo in 2009 or 2010. It was like one based on acting skill, the other one because of high rated drama.

1

Agree. Instead of Daesang, it should be Popularity Award. Daesangs should be reviewed by media-experts and not determined thru fanvotes. That is why there's in other awards like Baeksang separate Popularity and Daesang is given. (It shouldn't even be compared imo)

2

These days I think it's more of an appreciation award for the high ratings.
It's almost rare if they'd picked someone deserving of it like the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Kim Hye-ja is probably the most decorated Daesang winner of all time with about 7 wins.

Unless KBS gets a drama with higher rating (and looking at the upcoming dramas I highly doubt that will happen), the Daesang will go to the senior actor in Father is Strange. That drama was the highest rated one on KBS this year and the actor is older and more respected. When they don't have huge ratings (see: DOTS) or trendiness (that Park Bo Gum drama) networks tend to give the awards to the senior actors.
The SBS one is right and deserving and MBC gives its Daesang based on voting so I won't bother with it.

School 2017- 6%
The King Loves - 9%
The Man Who Dies To Live - 7%
Reunited Worlds - 8%

not totally true. many dramas that had popular idols have flopped. hwarang was kind of a flop and it had a few pretty big idols in it (Minho from Shinee, V from BTS which is huge in kr atm, and i guess you can include PHS since he's an idol who fully transitioned to acting).

i'd say idols do bring a few % of viewers from the fans, but i get the impression that most koreans actually do not care enough about idols to follow all their stuff. i think the exceptions might be Yoona or maybe Suzy (i think???) but overall it's not much different than a lot of teen fans in the US who would tune in to a movie or tv show for, say, a Taylor Swift guest appearance.

Hmmm...you are right. I got this from DB's write up on the drama:

"writer Kim Hyun-jung, a junior writer on Who Are You–School 2015 who also wrote drama specials Junior High Student Miss A and Her Perfect Day."

1

Agree - It is one that "could" be good, but if the writer brings too much of that high school vibe, it could end up as just another run of the mill drama.

1

@outofthisworld I hope the writer can do better this time. I can't afford to see these casts to go waste for some mediocre script. For now I checked the epi will be 16/32 which is just nice but SBS is so well known to extend their drama if it gets high rating and the result of the extension is not always good.

0

"Save me", starting in August might also be a sleeper hit. Overall, the upcoming season looks a lot better than the current one. Of the dozen or so that I started, I dropped 3/4 of them less than halfway through. FOS is pretty much my only Must See one airing now.

You may be right - when ever I see that "coming of age" line in the hype, I suspect it is going to be just another formula cliche based drama.

That was a great cycle of shows but I'm looking forward to the new beginning. I've discovered so many wonderful actors this time around while other good ones just stepped up their game.

PS
I know it's a weekend family drama that has sooo many episodes but I wish so much that someone was recapping Father is Strange. I'm dying to talk about it now that it's gotten so much better this week. I'm feeling all the feels with Lee Joon.

I'm desperate to chat about it too, they had this feature here for a little while last year (I think) where non-recapped shows were sometimes given a discussion thread partway through the show and I wish they would bring it back... does anyone else remember this?

Just finished ep 40. A whole week to wait for Joong Hee's reaction to Mi Young's Soju-speak. Awww, this show is so good at keeping us hooked. Can't wait for everything to be out in the open by next week.

Why does Seven Day Queen get very low ratings? They don't deserve it! The acting and plot are spot on, so I just pray more people will genuninely appreciate this piece of art. ??

I had started forest of secret but I find it really hard to understand if you can't be patience, hence the rating. It's not bad, I just think it could be better but then it hard to follow it when you missed an episode.

I wish they can have a small victory in between so it's not really secret all the time. I like it very much, it just I think that small victory will make more audience tune it.

I still love seven day queen cause it breaks my heart every turn, yeah even when the nanny said something, I instantly ask her to stop and ask her to say only nice things, she has a mesmerising ability to make that words come true so be careful nanny.

Why would I want to miss an episode?? ? Missing one Shi-mok's changing expression will be devastating (for me). He, he, he. Probably FoS is just not your taste right now ☺

I missed an entire weekof drama because I was really busy or almost two because FoS is on weekend, had to do the same with 7 Day Queen too then I think, if the audience accidentally missing an ep or two, it can be hard to swallow as we don't really remember much if we are not discussing it with anyone, especially people who watch it live.

Then the audience finally catches up and there is no little victory. I don't think it about my taste right now, I didn't realise how much I missed this little moment of "here's the truth" before a bigger truth until now. Seo Dong Jae part is the kind of a little victory I've thought but it hasn't been much.

Perhaps next week will have more things achieve in the good guys way but I understand why the rating isn't as big as I thought it should be based on how I enjoy it.

I make one hour episode of FoS into two hours drama watching so I don't miss any detail.
Funny is it? For us, that if we can't catch up 'this week' drama episodes because of 'oh life, work, school', it looks like we have homework to do over the weekend or holiday, though it is homework we gladly do. I usually make a 'episodes to catch up'
List:
Fos: 2 episodes (11 - 12)
Duel: 1 episodes (13 - 14)
FiS: alot episodes stop at ep 15 yesterday
SDQ: done (13 - 14) looking next week episode
BoGW: Hmmmm I think I'll try again at ep 3
Marathoning J drama if I still have time left.
Busy, busy, busy. ? the struggle of K drama addict.

P.S: Lee Jung-hyuk nailed Seo Dong-jae character, he makes me laugh, cringe, and angry at the same time.

I usually just watch as it aired so I have a more organised schedule but then I missed ep 5 to 7 and then 9 and 10 so I am still catching up.

I just watch 2 drama and the reason to watch it because I want to know the story but if I put myself into the audience that watching live for an hour every weekend and liking it without commenting and such,
I don't think I will catching up for the latest ep but rather watching within my own capability, so I am not watching the latest ep but the ep I had been missed.

I just want to say that the rating for FoS is actually making sense even if the show could have more based on the quality.

I'm really sad for Seven Day Queen getting that kind of ratings that we all know they didn't deserve but then like what others are saying as long as we all know that this show is awesome it's more than enough. At the end of the day, we recommend dramas not on how it's ratings go when it was airing but how great that show is.

I seriously feel bad for people who are missing out on Forest of Secret. I urge you to watch it or atleast binge watch it after its finish because its just... Unbelievably good. If it was aired in usa and if people didnt mind the language barrier and subtitles, it would have racked up emmy and golden globes in every categories.

I'm on the side that doesn't like seven day queen and I don't know why. It's technically a very good show and has every thing you could want in a romantic sageuk but I could not get invested and dropped it around ep 9. Just something about the show caused me to not have interest. I don't know it wasn't addictive or something. Maybe this is why the viewer ratings are low? Personally for me it lacks a kick or something but I have no idea what.

Also I have this same issue with FoS in that it's clealry the perfect show but it bores me to death. I want to like it badly because look at how amazing everything about that show is and I just can't because I have no interest. Anyone with me or am I alone in this?

Believe me, there are a lot of reasons for k-drama viewers _not_ to like FoS. A lot of people don't like political or legal thrillers or crime procedurals. Many people only watch romance dramas. A lot of people want to watch shows casually with no penalty when they miss an episode or three. Many viewers don't like to have to keep track of the motives and doings of more than a handful of characters. And many more reasons ...

On the other hand, there are not a lot of reasons why a regular k-drama audience _should_ like FoS. Its main strengths are impeccable writing and great acting, two things that are absent from almost all successful k-dramas, meaning that they are unnecessary and unimportant to the majority of viewers.

Agreed .. this is not everyones cup of tea.. but i hope everyone who likes atleast try a couple of episodes. I also rarely watch this type of shows but once i was invested in the story and the characters. There was no going out for me. As John pointed out, the amazing writing and acting and also directing is top notch.

You're not alone, I guess, in sort of way. I started watching FoS last two weeks, and I'm just at episode 3. The show is interesting, but it doesn't really give me enough hype to continue watching the next episode. But I'm still gonna give it a try until ep 6 and see how it goes.

This drama is not a kind of show that I have to immediately watch since it is really need a full focus, but once I started the beginning of each epi, I'll be totally invested and won't let anyone or anything to disturb me. It's good thing it has a recap for last epi in the beginning of each epi, to refresh viewers' memory.

Agree with everyone here! There is nothing wrong with you or the people of South Korea.
It's pretty much understandable why the ratings is where it's at. It's good for it's timeslot and there is a lot of competition during the weekend.
I'd be grateful if it'll hit 5% for this amazing cast.

We don't have to like every show, even shows which the majority loves. However, I don't think the reason ratings are low is because it's not everyone's cup of tea. We've already talked about this at length for the past weeks. I'm just gonna sit back and enjoy.

I don't love it either. Like you said, it is a very good show in term if the writing flow and execution, but the storyline itself lacks a kick imo. I'm watching it on-off depends on the recap.. Honestly, this kind of writing and execution that I hoped for Ruler because Ruler imo supposedly had more intriguing story and if it's done right, I would be happy to watch it until the end. This drama is heavy on romance and also the relationship between the three leads, so the side characters imo are not really utilised so at times they are just there as ppl who can endanger the OTP relationship only. I can't enjoy this kind of sageuk, but I also understand if some viewers love it since the romance part in this drama is worth for emotional investment.

You don't have to like every drama and I really like that you said that you know it produced well.

A well-made fried egg usually doesn't have the burn part but we all know many of us like egg who has the burn crispy part on the outside, not because we didn't acknowledge the well-made one as the good one but because we need that burn crispy part to love it, as simple as that.

7dayqueen, the reason how it can't be enjoyable when I think about, it is that the character isn't likeable enough on the surface to make you care about them, they don't have the grand narrative ala "I'll be the king" spirit early on, like 6 flying dragons or Ruler early episode.

They don't have the sad background which can garner more sympathy or relatable aspect (not saying that drama that uses this is low than this drama) but they all a king, a price and a minister daughter, no one comes from the low birth, unnamed or disadvantages early on like being poor and work hard just to have something.

The king despite being paranoid is already a king, the prince early on doesn't want to be a king and the girl starts off wealthy and happy. We can feel that there's no room for people/audience to feel like we are a part of their world.

For FoS, I had say this, despite liking it very much, it has a little victory and if you can't track the story, you'll gonna be lost and questioning on why they don't capture them already.

One of my pet peeves when reading the comments of some non-Koreans in this section: Oh, this is such a great drama but is getting a poor rating in Korea. Koreans do not have a good taste. They do not appreciate a good drama when they see it. They are missing out on a great drama. I blame them because the drama I love is getting cut due to the low ratings.

I understand people being sad over the poor ratings of the drama they like. It's a very human thing. But can you just stop there and continue on with your enjoyment of your favorite drama without belittling other people's taste and reasons for not liking certain dramas?

Firstly: But 8-months on, Moonlight is no longer relevant. :) :) Superficial marketing drive doesn't get the production 'real profits'.

Secondly: Let's disregard Lee Joon Gi in the discussion because even no matter what he is Lee Joon Gi. Let's just compare the young actors. The young princes are doing 'acting' projects left and right.

Thirdly: Game of Throne and Shakepearean tone is not a joke. It means the 'drama' will stay for a long time and will be k-ent all-time drama classic.
