Changes and growth in store for Age of Youth 2 roommates

In the new stills for upcoming JTBC drama Age of Youth 2, there are changes in store for our returning housemates Han Ye-ri, Park Eun-bin, and Han Seung-yeon, who have grown a little since last year. If the first season was all about the housemates finding their individual dreams, this second season will be centered around how the housemates learn to help and relate to the people around them.

Han Ye-ri’s character Jin-myung looks less haggard than she did in the first season where she was juggling three part-time jobs in order to make ends meet. The last time we saw her, she was going on an extended self-journey to China. Age of Youth 2 begins exactly a year later when she has come back from her trip, and will tell a completely different story about the housemates that live with her at the sharehouse Belle Epoque.

According to Han Ye-ri, we’ll see a change in Jin-myung’s personality because she’s taken some of the self-burden off her own shoulders. So she’ll smile a bit more and have a sunnier disposition than before, and her fashion has changed too. Because of the necessity of doing so many part-time jobs, she always looked for comfort rather than style, but after becoming employed full-time at a matchmaking company, she needed to gain more accessories and heels to match her work environment.

On the other hand, Han Seung-yeon’s character has become more withdrawn and reserved in comparison to her perky bubbly self last season. The main reason was her incident with the abusive ex-boyfriend, after which she took a leave of absence from school. Because of her traumatic experience, she’s grown fearful of strangers and interacting with other people outside her immediate circle. Thankfully, she’ll be romanced by a much kinder boy this time, played by Onew (Descended From the Sun). He’ll play an engineering student who’s never had a relationship and is clueless about love. (Oh, so he’s like the male version of Park Eun-bin’s character?)

The cast has grown as two housemates have been replaced, and their new respective romantic partners have been added. Kim Min-seok (Defendant) will be playing the landlord’s representative, and Ahn Woo-yeon (Circle) will be a failed K-pop idol whose band never got off the ground after debuting five years ago. Then there are some familiar faces like Shin Hyun-soo (Ruler—Master of the Mask) who became known as the popular “Ball-pen Sunbae.” He’s the ex-boyfriend of Ji-woo, who will replace the role of the maknae at Belle Epoque.

Sohn Seung-won (Person Who Gives Happiness) will continue to have the will-they-or-won’t-they friendship with Park Eun-bin, and they’ll continue to hang out together because they’re from the same department. Last but not least, Choi Ara has been added as the last housemate, a mysterious girl who will be known as the “tall one” because of her height compared to the rest of the four girls.

Age of Youth 2 will begin airing on August 25, after Woman of Dignity’s run ends.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the new developments in Han Ye Ri and Han Seung Yeon's characters' lives. Especially, Ye Eun even though Jin Myung is my favorite character.

Omg, what? Jin-myung works at a matchmaking company? That’s really unexpected, but hey, I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how that turns out. I’m excited about that positive change in her, too. Good for her.

Haha, I’m actually listening to SHINee’s first album, SHINee World, rn, so yay for Onew being part of s2. I can already imagine his adorable self gracing my screen.
I really like Han Seung-yeon’s long black hair here, too.

Crossing my fingers that Ji-won and her sunbae’s relationship will fully blossom into something more this time around.
Also very much excited for Choi Ara!
Oh? Just saw the pictures below the article... why does Shin Hyun-soo look so teary-eyed?
GUDETAMA! <3

Jin Myung's occupation definitely made me do a double-take. I was like wait, what? On hand it doesn't seem like that type of occupation suits her personality, but then we also know that she was suppressing a lot about herself just to get through her days so maybe it DOES suit her and we were just never able to get to know this side of her.

Or I could totally watch episodes of her struggling in changing her fashion sense and personality to adapt to her work environment - and doing all that without sacrificng who she is inside.

I love this arc!

She's a hard worker and student, she'll probably do well if the job requires her to be fashionable and a bit ruthless in matching other people up. But eventually she'll struggle with having to mark/grade clients based on their wealth, education, etc.

Oh no, poor Ye-eun :( I hope this new love interest erases some of her bad memories. I expect nothing less from Onew; he's lookin' exceptionally adorkable. ?

Onew sounds just like the character that is perfect for Ye Eun
's growth. She needs someone who adores her without reservation and he sounds like he might be the one.

My reservations about all the changes are slowly easing. It'll be weird not having Park Hye Soo as Eun Jae. But I'm already getting used to seeing Ji Woo in her role.

My main hope is that with the addition of all the guys, will won't lose focus on the girls. I don't want their entire arcs to be just about romance either.

Wish we could get hints about Ryu Hwa Youngs's cameo. But I suppose they still wanna downplay her involvement.

Yes, I also hope that they won't focus too much on the romance and lose the girl bonding that made this show so special in my heart. I love their bickering, even their fighting (coz it's realistic - that's what happen when you have 5 girls of different personalities staying together), their camaderie, sitting around the dining table, sharing, talking. I want all that back.

Don't disappoint me, Writer-nim ??

Losing focus on the girls and their relationship to one-another is definitely a concern I have as well. While romance is nice, the magic of Age of Youth was always about the young ladies and their connection to each other.

They were able to get through a lot of the crap that happened to them because they had each other to lean on. I hope the writer doesn't forget that.

I feel like laughing every time I see Ji-won in character. :D I missed this gang so much when the show ended, I still can't believe we're THIS close to seeing them again.

But Ye-eun's story is... :( she was my least favorite roommate last season but no one deserves to go through that. I hope she gets to heal, new boyfriend or not.

I'm gonna miss Kang unni and the original eun jae, the story literally started from EJ's POV, and minus the stint in her next drama(introverted boss), I feel this 'is' the type of roles that suits her the best. I will miss her innocence and at the same time the contradiction I felt when the story showed ' she is capable of killing someone'. Change is good, but actor swapping never goes well with me, ? especially in KDramas where it's actually hard to warm upto actors lol (given some of them can't act).

Wow, that still of Han Ye-ri is so lovely. I can't quite believe that it's Jin-myung! That year away was certainly good to her.

And then my heart breaks at the still of Ye-eun being so guarded. Doing a rewatch of the first season and it's such a contrast to how she was back then. Onew, your character better be good to her!

Here's hoping that we'll get more insight into Ji-won's life this time around!

I've accepted that Eun-jae will be played by a new actress, although I feel like my brain will treat Ji-soo's Eun-jae like a new character, at least for the first few episodes. Hopefully the disconnect doesn't last long, although the year-long jump should help in smoothing out the transition.

Excited for this!

I'm disagree to see the male characters in this drama get this kind kind of exposure from the beginning. I hope their fans will not keep saying when their oppa will appear. I know I sound negative, but I think I have the right for that. I'm not an anti romance either, it is just this drama was awesome because the focus of the drama not on the romance solely. Now I think, it would have been better if season 1 actually had 16 epi, not 12 epi.

Nevertheless, I am still looking forward to this drama and hope it's still good! The change on Jin Myung looks good, she is working now, definitely need some upgrade on her clothes and make up! Ji Won looks good too!

I get where the sentiment is coming from. But, honestly, I just trust this writer a lot. I'm ready to be negative once the drama proves me wrong, but for now I'm not really against new additions to the cast getting exposure in the promos.

I mean, they're even starting out with several of the characters out of their respective relationships, pretty much acknowledging that life takes its course and that those romances weren't the most important part of the past season. I'm sure the writer will keep the integrity of their stories in tact. Even in the first season, it was always about their life and loves. While the lovelines never overtook anything, they were present. So as long as everything flows as naturally in this season and nothing feels forced, I'll be happy.

Ooh.. Han Ye Ri looks good with short hair ! I definitely have to start watching AoY season 1 this weekend !

Also, I saw their new teaser where they were dancing, looks cute and fun :) especially the part of Kim Min Seok and the tall girl. It's like the reverse version of the common height difference between male and female character

There's a lot of changes to the characters and the new cast. I guess that's how life works in a way too. You meet new people and certain life events spin your life in unexpected ways.

It almost feels like it'll be a more slice of life version of the "I need romance" series. I hope this season does well, then we might possibly even get a AOY male version haha.

But not one with the AOY concept.

1

Tons? I don't like them? You talking about Hwarang, Moon Lovers? All of dramas always show that all men will love one girl and the competition between theme.. I want more 'youth', I don't want 'makjang' or 'love triangle' ,..

Plus Nine Boys

Other Youth dramas that have a female lead, but a male majority cast:

Reply Series
Drinking Solo

And of course you have White Christmas. Which was written by AOY's writer. It's not "light", but it's definitely youth and not about fighting over a girl.

Basically, female majority casts are few and far between. And if Age of Youth is going to continue as a franchise. It should stay about the girls.

3

Yes it true that there needs to be more of an all female cast for dramas/films. Never said that they should rid of the female AOY, however I'm suggesting as a potential spin off. Even if there isn't a male spin off, some other production will gladly produce one. You've mentioned a lot of dramas (which I've watched), but none compare to AOY. That's how great it is :)

Anyways, I'm pretty much just hopeful that we get the much deserved "Jiwon Backstory" this season.

I think the key point is that there are few dramas with male leads that were as thoughtful as age of youth. A drama from our time that spoke to issues that young men face in our time, and where they're not written as archetypes but as actual, complex people.

1

agreed. i reaaaaaaally don't want to see a male version LOL we have enough of those.

I don't mind the change as long as the characters and their stories are still relatable and heartfelt as in Season 1 which I love and now tops my list of must-watch Kdrama for young adults.
