Yeo Jin-gu, Lee Yeon-hee up to become friends-turned-lovers in Reunited Worlds

Lee Yeon-hee (Hwajeong) may be coming back to dramaland for a new supernatural rom-com that’s in the works at SBS called Reunited Worlds. The offer to be her leading man is out to Yeo Jin-gu, who is currently starring in my latest crack drama, Circle. If they sign on, they’ll be paired in an odd relationship: They are childhood friends born in the same year who have somehow aged differently so that now she’s a 31-year-old woman and he’s still a 18-year-old boy.

There are conflicting reports about the role Lee Yeon-hee has received. According to one source, she could be a bright, simple-is-best-type of gal who loves being active. As a tomboy whose dream was to become a manga artist, she wanted to go to art school, but real life got in the way, and she ended up graduating college with a nursing degree. Due to her father’s bankruptcy, she ends up having to become the personal live-in caretaker of a rich woman with a rare terminal illness.

There are other reports that describe her character as a 31-year-old woman who works at a restaurant, although the rest of the premise is the same. Descriptions on Yeo Jin-gu’s character are much more vague: He’s supposed to play an innocent youth with a pure-hearted honesty about him.

If Lee Yeon-hee confirms Reunited Worlds, although she’s already finished filming on JTBC drama The Package, we might see her in this SBS drama first because The Package will be pre-produced and broadcast later in the fall.

Written by Lee Hee-myung and directed by PD Baek Soo-chan, whose partnership created Girl Who Sees Smells and Beautiful Gong Shim, Wednesday-Thursday drama Reunited Worlds will begin this July, after the end of Suspicious Partner.

Lee Yeon Hee can be a hit or a miss. She was GREAT in Miss Korea, but awful in Hwajeong. Let's hope for Yeo Jin Goo's sake that she does a good job here.

I'm so tired of these massive age gap pairings in dramaland. Yes, he is legal (barely) but there's 10 years between them irl and that is too big for me to feel comfortable with them romancing each other. With this drama somehow it's ok because it's built into the premise that mentally he's the same age as her? Nope.

I liked LYH in Miss Korea. Girl, please don't do this to yourself. YGJ is really talented and can do way better than this. He's got the rest of his career to be a romantic leading man for god's sake.

I disagree with you about the age gap. And 10 years is really not that much when you have couples with 20 years age gap doing just fine.

But the difference here is that he is barely legal. That's the main reason why it makes me so uncomfortable.

Pretty much this. If he were a bit older, I would have no issues w/ the age gap.

UGH, yes, thank you. These producers are so eager to pair up actors that have been adults for a while with barely legal adults/minors and it's creepy. No, the age gap is not okay when he just became an adult like, this year.

I don't mind the age -we've got me good pairings with that gap before- however it is sort of weird when one of them just turned 18. I'm curious to find out how the story and the characters will overcome that age gap.

Yea... that was my feeling when I went into the article... If the premise is that they're mentally on the same page, I think it's okay. But just on character description alone... sounds like Girl had to mature really quickly considering all the bankruptcy, real life problems, etc. while Boy remain an innocent puppy with the face of an 18 year old. Mature 31yo Girl with Innocent Puppy 18yo Boy. There better be some massive chemistry... 'cause I don't buy that relationship... unless he's her boytoy, which ... bring it on!

I'm one of those who has a hard time buying the romance if the age gap is glaringly huge and obvious. Like GOBLIN I never bought into the first couple because she's a high school girl and he's old (forgot the years) AND they made her act very childish even more so that made it harder. I only liked the ending when she became older, nuanced and mature because their wavelengths matched and Kim Go Eun is an amazing actress who pulled it off.

So its a Noona -Romance right? Sign me up for that. Also the fantasy part with the different aging sounds a bit Benjamin Buttonesque so I'm intrigued.

I hope Lee Yeon Hee can recreate the magic from Miss Korea. With the right script, director and cast she can really shine, but she falters with a weak cast or script.

The age gap... well, I don't like it and I hope this "trend" will stop.

My bet is on the supernatural applying to him--somehow he's traveled forward in time by a number of years, or has stopped aging for whatever reason, or fell into a deep Rip Van Winkle style sleep and now has to readjust to 2017 life. ^^ Looking good, hwaiting!

Yeo jin goo my new bae ! Then I don't know how I feel about Lee yeon hee, although she was kind of good on miss korea. Regardless I love noona romance, so no way I'm going to miss it! I don't think 10 years age gap is a problem, since Lee Jung suk and Lee bo young had awesome chemistry in ' I hear your voice' ! Add to that yeo jin gu is one good actor, so it won't be an issue I think, if he takes it that is!

He said in an interview that he took a leave of absence from his school since it would just be impossible with his schedule and it would also be harmful to his studies to juggle both at the same time.

YJG is either a time-traveler or a vampire/goblin/alien/supernatural being who didn't age. YJG is killing it with Circle and LYH was amazing in Miss Korea (haven't seen either of them on other roles). Noona romance WITH fantasy element. Count me in.

While I enjoyed the first half of Gong-shim, I quickly lost interest when Ahn Dan-tae and his family drama became the central focus. I have no opinion on Lee Yeon-hee since I haven't really watched her in anything but as long as Yeo Jin-gu isn't in school uniform for half the drama, I don't mind the age gap since it's part of the story and Yeo Jin-gu is already an adult in real life.

Mmmm, I get that it's built into the plot and I generally don't mind age gaps in pairings, but I need someone to be at least 20 or 21 irl. I know 19 is above legal age but even my 26 year old self still sees Yeo Jin Gu as a child. YJG's Korean age is 20 so they actually might be in line with my thinking on this one but I'm not Korean, so he's still 19 for me.

But it sounds interesting. I like both Yeo Jin Gu and Lee Yeon Hee.

I could give you Baek Jin Hee or Lee Yoo Young as references LOL

1

There are plenty of younger actresses with arguably more talent. There are also some slightly older actors that I personally feel still look like they're 18 as well. Personally, I would have looked at an actor that was a little older and not an actress that is younger, though.

I don't think casting director's are hurting for options in the Korean entertainment industry, tbh.

1

@dee I think they were talking about the male casting not the female casting....

I don't think I could ever say no to more Yeo Jin Goo! He is currently amazing in tvN's Circle.
I'm a little bit less thrilled about Lee Yeon Hee as the lead actress. Her acting isn't top notch and I fear it will be even more obvious with Yeo Jin Goo in front of her.

When I went to read the soompi page for "Sad Movie" (which is more than a decade old already), most people were commenting how the mother-son story left the most impact for them and how amazing the kid was in the movie (since it was YJG's debut, nobody knew who he was). And to think he grew up to be the brilliant actor that he is now... it just makes me go wow.

If it's written in a way where a grown-ass woman is not beholden to a beautiful young man, I'm down. There are just not as many pieces of fiction exploring themes of aging and cultural expectations when it comes to an older woman and a younger man. Yes, there are noona romances, but in the grand scale of fiction, there are so many more stories about older men and younger women that explore similar themes. I think there's still a lot of room to ponder these themes and I'd be interested to see it in this drama. Given of course that it doesn't make the mistake that I mentioned earlier.

I don't have a problem with age gaps as long as neither of the actors is a minor so I'm definitely onboard for Yeo Jin Gu. And it's been far too long since we've had a noona romance so hopefully this'll be a good one, though I'm sceptical considering the writer/pd's previous works. Girl who sees scents was okay, but Gong Shim lost it's way towards the second half.

I'm kinda worried about this... but if YJG accepts I'm definitely watching this anyway. Jingoo said they'd be filming for Circle until June and if this airs in July, he would absolutely have no break at all. He's also promoting his movie atm and has a special appearance in 1987.

The premise sounds really nice though... and if Jingoo's supposed to be 31 who seems to have stopped aging at 18, I'm sure he's the perfect person to pull of that kind of role.

31 y.o lady doesn't need to look old. There are women who look a lot younger than actual age. Even if there is a need for her to look older, there's always a way to make her older. If they managed to make Nam Ji Hyun looks older than her actual age. they can make the same magic for Park Bo Young. I know PBY is baby face, but there's always a way to make her more mature. ?

I love her Paradise Ranch with Changmin& Joo Sangwook. I ship her there with both leads. I love to rerun that drama many times.... She was amazing in first 2 episodes of Gu family book too. She was lovable in East of Eden with song Seung Heon. She was amazing in Miss Korea. I didnt watch Ghost though, i read there isnt romance in the drama. She is also so beautiful in the MV of Timeless with Shia JunSu& Jang Ri In. Basically i love her so much...

On the one hand I really want YJG to star in a rom-com because come on let us see the boy laugh again and rom-coms might be the most popular genre in dramaland and I wish he'd gain some fame for a drama where he's not playing the younger version of the main character.

On the other hand, doesn't his role remind you a bit of Circle? He dissapears when he's 18 then appears again more than 10 years later, not having aged a day? Circle with male-femal-reversal?
