Lookout: Episodes 17-18

Lookout promises to keep us riveted as the team edges ever closer to exposing the corruption that plagues both the police force and the prosecutor’s office. There’s no room for mistakes, so of course that means that we can’t just sit back and enjoy the ride. Get ready, the journey to justice is about to get very bumpy.

EPISODE 17 RECAP

Do-han drives his car through traffic and gets the feeling that he’s being followed. He’s right, because Suji has his car in sight while Kyung-soo and Bomi run a search on his background. When Do-han stops at a high end store, Suji parks on the street to keep an eye on him.

Kyung-soo unearths that Do-han’s mother died when he was in high school, killed by her common-law husband. Suji asks Kyung-soo if Chief Prosecutor Yoon was connected to the case, but he finds nothing. Suji watches as Do-han walks out of the store, convinced that his reason for revenge against Yoon is well hidden.

After Suji drives away, Do-han steps out of a driveway. Now that he knows who’s been following him, Do-han recalls the priest’s phone call about Suji’s request to meet him. The priest wanted to take her into their confidence, but Do-han protested because they just managed to produce a witness. When the priest asked Do-han about the other person, Do-han answered that he found a clue. The priest sensed his lead was connected to the detective who tortured Do-han’s father, a man only known to them by his nickname.

When Suji stops at a light, she sees a televised news broadcast in a storefront that reports on her being shot and still at large. Eun-joong sits at his desk, puzzled over the video chip with evidence that Do-han helped Suji when she was injured, when he gets a call from Soon-ae.

Soon-ae and Eun-joong watch over Suji’s mother, who’s resting up after having collapsed. When Mom wakes up, Soon-ae guesses she collapsed in shock after hearing of Suji’s shooting, and asks why Mom believed the news instead of calling her. Mom answers that she couldn’t turn to the police who shot her daughter, but she perks up when Soon-ae lies that Suji didn’t get hit by the bullet and is fine.

Soon-ae gets a call and steps out of the room. It’s from Suji, and Soon-ae asks about her injury, relieved that she’s all right. Soon-ae says that Detective Nam claimed that Suji broke out of the handcuffs and attacked him, but Suji just warns her to keep an eye on him. Suji asks after her mother and Soon-ae insists that she’s fine, tough like her daughter.

Although Soon-ae takes care to speak quietly and away from the room, Eun-joong catches a glimpse through the cracked doorway and overhears as Soon-ae urges Suji to take care of herself until she catches her.

Do-han approaches Detective Nam and proposes that they share information. Detective Nam isn’t interested, but Do-han persists and asks if he’s been at work behind the scenes all along. We see in flashback that Detective Nam was the one who slipped Woo-sung notes while in custody and helped him escape.

Do-han tries to determine how long the detective has worked for the chief prosecutor, but Detective Nam ignores the question. Instead, he wonders pointedly how a badly injured Suji could have escaped, asking if Do-han knows the answer since he was the last person to see her before she disappeared. Detective Nam faults himself for her escape because he allowed Do-han to interfere.

They return to the joint team headquarters for a meeting. Soon-ae confirms that Bomi lived at the apartment where Suji was arrested and Do-han suggests that she was the one who helped Suji to escape. Prosecutor Park reminds the team that there’s another person in the mix, the one who sent the photos to her apartment.

Eun-joong stares at Do-han closely as they hear that the courier never met the sender of the envelopes and picked them up from spots without cameras. Prosecutor Park orders the team to make Bomi’s wanted status public and discover how she met Suji.

Do-han approaches Eun-joong and asks the reason for his laser eyes. Eun-joong admits that he has lots of questions but can’t depend on Do-han to give him real answers. He’s determined to find out those answers wants on his own.

Kyung-soo and Bomi are adorably awkward as they set up a monitor in the hideout. After their hands touch and Bomi pulls away, she agrees to let Kyung-soo finish the job. Bomi reaches for a can that she mistakes for food, surprised to see that it contains a pair of men’s underwear. She throws them at Kyung-soo, flustered, and her eyes betray her. Ha!

When Suji joins them, Bomi checks the surveillance on Shi-wan. Kyung-soo determines that one camera was moved or turned off, so Suji asks Bomi to check the footage from the chief prosecutor’s house. She’s surprised when she sees Do-han run across the screen.

Suji wonders why Shi-wan didn’t change his phone or computer once the camera was discovered. Kyung-soo and Bomi reason that Shi-wan must not be aware that he’s being watched, but Suji diagrees. She runs out with the excuse that she needs an answer.

At school, Shi-wan is suddenly very interested in Soon-ae’s outcast daughter Se-won. Kyung-soo and Bomi watch onscreen as Shi-wan runs to help Se-won carry gym supplies, but she rejects his help and continues alone. When a jealous girl questions his attention, Shi-wan explains that it isn’t Se-won’s fault her mother is a detective.

Eun-joong rewatches the footage from the video chip, when Do-han carried Suji to safety. He thinks of Do-han’s suggestion that Bomi assisted her and wonders what he’s after. Then he gets a call that a reporter he wanted to find has been located.

A team from the Seoul Prosecutors’ Office serves Lawyer Oh with a search warrant, based on a report that he received illegal shares from a businessman when he was a prosecutor. Chief Inspector Yoon gets a call that Lawyer Oh’s investigation is underway.

Do-han visits a dejected Lawyer Oh, commiserating with him and expressing shock that a friendly exchange got twisted out of proportion. Lawyer Oh asks if Yoon is behind the investigation and thinks it curious that the share transfer was reported after so many years.

Do-han reasons that the Miseo-dong case caused a change in Chief Prosecutor Yoon’s mood. Acting surprised that Yoon went after Lawyer Oh, Do-han adds that Yoon believes Oh met with members of the opposition party. Do-han reminds Lawyer Oh that Yoon is the type to strike first, and it’s not long before Assemblywoman Chae gets a call from Oh.

Do-han returns to his car in good spirits and tells himself, “I have my first witness. I just need to find one more.” He glances at an envelope on the passenger seat and then looks into his side mirror, seeing Suji parked down the street. She mutters, “I can’t wait any longer,” just as Do-han notes that she’s impatient.

Suji follows Do-han’s car to the abandoned public bath that serves as the trio’s hideout. Do-han pronounces, “This is the last mission. Please make the best of it, Detective Jo,” and makes sure Suji can see him drop the envelope out his car window.

On the road, a dark sedan swerves in front of Assemblywoman Chae’s car, screeching to a stop and forcing Chae’s car to halt as well. She’s been summoned by Chief Prosecutor Yoon and calls his action proof that he’s unfit to be attorney general. They toss threats back and forth until the assemblywoman asks Yoon what he wants.

Suji presents the envelope to the team, and Kyung-soo’s eyes widen when he takes out a photo of his mother. Meanwhile at a hospital, Eun-joong meets with Reporter Jung, who is curious about his interest in a seventeen-year-old case. Eun-joong clarifies that he’s interested in the culprit’s son, Jang Do-han.

Reporter Jung explains that Park Ji-sook had another son, Lee Kwan-woo, who was brought into the relationship by her partner, Lee Shin-hyuk. Even though they never registered their marriage, they lived together as a family and their sons were very close. Eun-joong notes that the incident turned one child into a victim’s son and the other into the perpetrator’s son. But Reporter Jung says that everybody was a victim, because the reason Lee Shin-hyuk became an alcoholic and a schizophrenic was because he’d been tortured.

A desperately frightened older man is dragged into a room by a guard, where he accepts blame for anything and everything. Do-han looks on wordlessly as the man rubs his hands together and begs, “Save me.” Do-han leans forward and says, “Dad, it’s me,” and that calms his father’s frenzy. When his father looks up, a tear escapes from Do-han’s eye.

Kyung-soo explains to Suji and Bomi that the police believed his mother killed herself due to depression, but the Boss explained that she went missing—Kyung-soo’s mother tried to correct a mistake from her past, but became involved in something dangerous.

Suji reads their mission: “Find the torture detective, Venom. Then you can catch Yoon Seung-ro.” Bomi notes that the link to Chief Prosecutor Yoon means that the mission involves all of them, but Suji adds that it involves their leader as well.

Kyung-soo shows Bomi and Suji all the research he’d collected about his mother’s case. Suji asks about a series of letters and numbers written on some paper, but Kyung-soo explains that he already tried using it as a password on all of his mother’s registered websites, but it hadn’t worked.

Bomi thinks the code could be both the user ID and the password, while Suji suggests that Kyung-soo’s mother registered an account under someone else’s name. Kyung-soo argues that his mother was an ordinary ajumma with no secrets, but Suji explains that she may have needed to do so in order to correct her mistake from the past.

Eun-joong scans the articles on Lee Shin-hyuk’s conviction for espionage and concludes that Jang Do-han didn’t know who to blame when his mother was killed by his stepfather, a victim of torture. Reporter Jung relates that after his mother’s death, Do-han considered Lee Shin-hyuk and his son his enemies and beat his stepbrother so badly that he ended up in the hospital.

Moreover, Reporter Jung adds that Lee Shin-hyuk claimed that the espionage case against him was fabricated.

Using his mother’s written code as ID and password (rather than just password), Kyung-soo successfully accesses a website registered under another name. The mailbox is empty, but Suji suggests that he check the draft folder, where they find a message dated the day his mother disappeared.

Dear Lawyer,
I got a call from Venom. It’s the detective who threatened me. He must have found out that I’m a witness in the retrial. If I don’t leave now, my Kyung-soo will be in danger. Please tell Kwan-woo. He introduced himself as Jang Do-han, but I remember his face as a child, so I recognized him. Please tell him that I will find out the identity of the Venom that Kwan-woo is trying so hard to find.

Suji reads the message in shock and asks, “Jang Do-han is who?”

EPISODE 18 RECAP

A visitor signs in as Lee Kwan-woo to visit Lee Shin-hyuk. Inside the visiting room, Do-han sits with his father and shows him a photo of Detective Nam, asking if it’s the man who tortured him. When his father doesn’t answer, Do-han raises his voice and Lee nods fearfully, confessing that he did everything and begging to go home. Do-han promises that next time, they’ll go home together. Do-han’s tears fall again as his father weeps.

Eun-joong walks out to the lobby of the same building, and doesn’t think much of seeing Do-han’s familiar silhouette walking away. But when he sees the name written on the sign-in sheet, he’s suddenly alarmed and runs outside after Do-han.

Out front, Do-han sits with the priest and says that he wasn’t able to confirm that it was “that detective” (Detective Nam). Do-han explains that his father still doesn’t recognize him, but the priest shares that he does have some good days. He’s quick to explain that he doesn’t necessarily come to see Do-han’s father, and that it’s just part of his ministry work.

Unseen behind them, Eun-joong overhears Do-han say, “Thank you, Do-han… You’ve always gotten through to Dad better than I did.” Eun-joong’s head snaps up to hear Do-han call the other guy Do-han. The priest just replies solemnly, “Kwan-woo, I don’t want to remember the time when we were family.”

Do-han asks the priest to wait just a little longer. The priest urges him to find the detective, catch Yoon, and retake his name.

Kyung-soo’s in shock over his mother’s message, and Bomi breaks it down for him: His mother was threatened by a detective nicknamed Venom when she planned to testify at a trial. They’re all surprised at the name Jang Do-han being involved, but Suji points out that he’s actually Kwan-woo. Kyung-soo wonders if he forged his identity.

Kyung-soo asks Suji why she asked them to look into Do-han’s background and she admits that she thinks he’s the Boss. Bomi and Kyung-soo are horrified, given that Do-han is Yoon’s lackey now, but Suji argues that Do-han fits their profile. Bomi is curious why he was mentioned in an email from ten years ago.

Suji asks for Do-han’s address, wanting to discover his plan. She instructs the others to find the attorney who received that message and figure out which trial it referred to.

Suji breaks in to Do-han’s place, while Kyung-soo finds the attorney in question at a cafe. He grabs the man’s pass card, copies it and returns it undetected. Bomi monitors Do-han’s place and the attorney’s office as her teammates search for information.

Suji tells the others that Do-han’s place reveals nothing—it’s clean of any helpful information, and even his computer’s browser history is empty. Kyung-soo can’t find out anything at the attorney’s office either, until he looks around and discovers a safe. Kyung-soo uses tape to lift fingerprints from the four keys that make up the code and gets ready to try all possible combinations of numbers, but Bomi immediately rattles off the correct code. He’s amazed that she knew, but she calls him a dummy because those were the numbers written along with his mother’s ID.

Inside the safe, Kyung-soo finds a notebook with articles and case files about an espionage case, as well as a retrial petition for Lee Shin-hyuk’s case. Suji is surprised to hear that he was tried for espionage while Kyung-soo wonders how his mother was involved. His father never mentioned anything about it.

Kyung-soo is shaken that his mother isn’t the woman that he knew, but Suji explains that there was a reason she couldn’t confide in her family. Bomi points out that his mother planned to testify in spite of the risk, and reminds him that this isn’t the time for complaining.

Kyung-soo pulls himself together and takes photos of the pages in the notebook, leaving just before the attorney returns. Unfortunately, Do-han is also on his way home, and Bomi urges Suji to get out of there. Suji starts to leave but decides to look through his desk drawers, where she finds a piece of paper with a familiar pattern.

She’s thankfully nowhere in sight when Do-han enters his home, but the open window tips him off that someone was there. He checks a pen that holds a USB and removes a clock from the wall, which holds a chip. Plugging the chip into his computer, he watches video of Suji looking around his place, upset when he sees that she took the special paper from his desk.

Armed with his new information about Do-han’s identity, Eun-joong sits at his desk and recalls his many exchanges with Do-han. When Prosecutor Park calls to ask if he figured out how to eliminate Chief Prosecutor Yoon and Do-han, Eun-joong informs him that he already found it.

Prosecutor Park orders Eun-joong to give him the evidence without delay. Park then reports to Assemblywoman Chae that Eun-joong found something, and she asks him to send it to her as soon as he has it. She wonders out loud if Chief Prosecutor Yoon will like the gift.

Suji returns to the hideout, where her teammates are eager to discuss the discovery that Do-han is really Lee Shin-hyuk’s son, Kwan-woo. Suji ignores them as she arranges the papers that their missions were written on. When laid out border to border, Kyung-soo notices that the pieces make up a large sketch of a butterfly.

As Suji adds the paper that she found at Do-han’s place, we see the priest in his room, sketching another butterfly. Bomi recognizes that the image is one-of-a-kind because it’s hand-drawn, and Suji offers it as proof that Do-han is their leader.

Kyung-soo concludes that Do-han released Shi-wan so that he could recruit Suji for his revenge, and vows to never forgive him for using them like that. Bomi cautions the others not to jump to conclusions, reminding them that the Boss’s information on her family’s case and Woo-sung’s case was accurate.

Kyung-soo is upset that Bomi can defend Do-han, but she argues that they need him. Suji counters that they need his plan and intel and intends to force him turn over what he has.

Bomi joins Suji that night on the roof and asks about her plans for Do-han once Chief Prosecutor Yoon and Shi-wan are caught. Bomi concedes that Do-han is guilty of using them, but the email from Kyung-soo’s mother made her feel sympathy—it shows that Do-han hid his identity and planned his revenge for over ten years, and that he felt a lot of pain, just like them. But Bomi adds that she just wanted to have her say, and says that she thinks Suji is always right.

Suji remembers the priest’s explanation that the leader wasn’t so different from her, and how Do-han urged her not to die when she was shot. While she mulls this over, Do-han stares at the video footage of Suji finding the paper from his desk.

At the high school, Se-won gets pushed to the floor by the mean girl who likes Shi-wan. Shi-wan offers to help her to the infirmary, but Se-won asks him to ignore her. She explains that the mean girl is picking on her because he paid attention to Se-won the day before.

Shi-wan claims that he understands Se-won because knows how it feels when rumors take over your life and apologizes for ignoring her before. He helps Se-won into the infirmary, then helps cleans the cuts on her hands. Swayed by his kind gestures, Se-won apologizes for doubting him and says that from now on, she will only trust what she sees. Shi-wan gives her a smile.

Bomi exits the priest’s church and reports that he’s in Mass, which allows Kyung-soo to let himself into the priest’s room. A brief search turns up his second phone, which we’d seen him using to communicate with Do-han.

Do-han exits the joint team headquarters and finds Eun-joong waiting for him. Eun-joong encourages him to stop using people and lying to them, but Do-han wonders how he could manipulate an upright man like him. Eun-joong promises, “If you don’t stop, I’ll force you to stop.” He cautions Do-han to think carefully and walks away.

Do-han gets a text on his phone, “10 p.m. outside the church. We must talk.” Kyung-soo is pleased when Do-han texts back, “See you later.” He tells Bomi with satisfaction, “We hooked the Boss for real this time.”

Bomi and Kyung-soo are finished checking the church’s CCTV cameras when they notice a lost little girl. Kyung-soo runs to comfort her, but Bomi sternly orders the child, “Quiet,” and then hands over one of the cute stuffed animals on her pack to stop her from crying.

The mother runs up and thanks Kyung-soo, and the little girl points to Bomi and says she saw her on television. Uh-oh. Nervously, Kyung-soo says that Bomi may be pretty but she’s not pretty enough for TV, and they run to their car. Bomi checks her phone and sees that she’s been added to the most wanted list.

Kung-soo assures Bomi that they won’t have to be careful much longer. Once they get Chief Prosecutor Yoon and find Kyung-soo’s mother, they can live like everyone else. Bomi reminds Kyung-soo that his mother may not be alive, but he refuses to lose hope and says that he’ll find his mother and live happily.

The priest is surprised when Do-han enters the church and asks what he wants, both men thinking they were called by the other. That’s when Suji walks up and tells them both, “I called you here because I have something to tell you.” She addresses the priest as Father Jang Do-han, and Do-han as Prosecutor Lee Kwan-woo.

Suji smiles as she tells Do-han that even though they met often, she didn’t know his real name. Do-han plays dumb, but the priest wants to end the lies. Suji admits that it must be difficult for Do-han to tell the truth after he worked so hard to hide himself, but insists, “But you can’t run away today.” With that, she calls the Joint Investigation Team Headquarters to turn herself in.

COMMENTS

Nope. Not good. Suji is about to take matters into her own hands and there’s no way that will turn out well. Instead, I think Suji is about to throw a wrench into Do-han’s plan in the worst way. There are so many alliances that Chief Prosecutor Yoon has developed throughout the years and Do-han’s best protection was his anonymity.

If Suji reveals Do-han’s duplicity, his life will be at risk because, as we already know, Yoon won’t let anyone stand in the way of his ambition. Suji may have legitimate reasons to despise Do-han, but how can she justify that the team can use him, but Do-han can’t use them, especially when she puts him at risk? No matter what the team holds against Do-han, he did protect them.

Suji’s decision to expose Do-han is too personal and she shouldn’t make that decision without more information. She’s so fixated on Do-han that she’s become reckless. Suji thinks that she can bring down Yoon without Do-han’s help, but she doesn’t even know about his plan or understand just how powerful the chief prosecutor really is. Foolish girl.

I’m getting a bad feeling about Assemblywoman Chae and Prosecutor Park. I think they’ve both gone to the dark side, and that means that Eun-joong will indirectly be aiding and abetting Chief Prosecutor Yoon. Poor Do-han, if Suji doesn’t take him down, Eun-joong just might.

Se-won is falling for Shi-wan’s charms and his attention just proves how deliberate he is when he pursues someone for his purposes. He pointedly left his computer and phone unchanged so that he can continue to be monitored. He’s trying to leave a trail of some kind, I’m just not sure why. I do know that Se-won should be very scared, but like any smitten teenager, she’s flattered by his attention.

Luckily, the episode didn’t just focus on betrayal, betrayal and more betrayal. Thank goodness for Bomi and Kyung-soo, who make quite the cute pair. Bomi’s reaction to holding Kyung-soo’s underwear was hysterical, and Kyung-soo had too much fun with her reaction. Poor girl, she goes from living alone to sharing quarters with a man who thinks she’s pretty. Who wouldn’t get flustered?

Kyung-soo finally gets his chance to delve into his mother’s case, and it shakes his confidence to realize how little he knew her. But Kyung-soo is never down for long, and his dream of a reunion and the chance to live happily with his mother is both inspiring and heartbreaking. What if Bomi is right and she is dead? I would like to see him back together with her because Bomi and Suji can’t get their loved ones back, and it would be great to see one member of the trio with a family to return to.

The backstory on Do-han and Kyung-soo revealed how closely their cases were entwined with one another. It’s been seventeen years since young Do-han (well, Kwan-woo then) watched his father wrongly convicted of espionage, and ten years since Kyung-soo’s mother disappeared, before she could testify in Lee Shin-hyuk’s retrial. That’s a long time to live with a permanently damaged father, or to grow up without a mother. No matter if they exact revenge from the ones who hurt them, Do-han and Kyung-soo can never have those years back with their parents. Suji can never get Yoo-na back and Bomi’s family is gone forever. What this team can do is prevent Chief Prosecutor Yoon and his son from ever hurting anyone else again, but that’ll be difficult if Suji doesn’t accept that Do-han may be the key to their success. She may not like what he’s done, but he’s their best shot at taking down an unchecked Yoon and the murderers he protects.

Such a great recap--thanks TeriYaki! I agree so much with your comments at the end about Suji exposing and using Dohan. I know that Do-han has been using all of them, but (as he said) he has also given them what he promised. And I don't understand why Suji, who is bright and totally awesome in every other respect, can't grasp that Dohan is playing the long game, and that a long game is needed to catch Yoon. Does she really think that if he hadn't let Si-wan off the hook, they would have convicted him? I mean, really? I can understand being mad that they've been used, but as TeriYaki said, they're using him too. And they really are all after the same thing... anyway these kinds of tensions make for such a fascinating show, though. I'm getting really attached to these characters---even Dohan.

Agree so much that the tensions between the characters make for a great show. I think that's why I've been so gripped despite the plot holes and implausible coincidences; the interactions between the characters and the motivations driving their actions, are so relatable and understandable.

Take the debate over whether Suji was justified or not to force the confrontation in the church. I've been on her side all along, and could see perfectly where her anger and distrust of Do Han was coming from. She's a great heroine to root for; strong, impulsive, brave, straightforward, no-bullshit.

At the same time, you also feel for Do Han who's playing a long game and has seemed to lose much (all?) of his humanity in the process. He's in the most precarious position of all having to play both sides, and you can sense his frustration whenever his team throws a spanner in the works.

No frustrating characters here, just people caught in bad circumstances trying to right the wrongs done to them. And making mistakes along the way but generally staying true to themselves.

makes you think whether it is worth it, though. I have watched till ep 20 and Do Han is in a constant cornered position but he manouvers out all the time. How can one exist under such tension? it will drive you crazy. I may sound ruthless, but just live your own life, forget all, get the revenge differently - by living your best life despite everything. Is it worth it to forgo your own happiness for the sake of justice? is that really just and fair? would other people agree with you? I just want to know if a little light will shine for our gang at the end, if they can just live peacefully for themselves a little. maybe that´s not who they are deep inside though.

Have watched to ep 20 too, and am glad that being a quick on his feet as well as a wise-ass is part of Do-han's real personality ^^
I think it's harder for Do-han to forget and let live, coz for him it's not just about his dad but also about his stepfamily. Maybe he's feels too guilty towards the real Jang Do-han to ever feel he deserves happiness.
And of course there will be light at the end, there has to beee!

I'm glad his dad is still alive. Otherwise, I don't know what DH will do after the YSR saga is over. When the real Do Han said he didn't want to remember the times when they were family, I was like :*( Like maybe after this, the priest wouldn't want to see DH again...

1

I think it's more than just revenge. Yoon Seung-ro has to stop. It's more than corruption. It's ruthlessness and evil. And worse of all, he thinks he's done nothing wrong. His air of contempt for those who are corrupt makes him an even more formidable foe.

*has to be stopped

True but do they need to sacrifice such a big part of their lives for it

0

i agree. i think it started as revenge, but now there is a grander purpose---stopping Yoon. i like to believe that they became lawyers and cops because stopping that kind of corruption was something they did want to devote their lives too---and though the system is failing them, something in them still has that passion for justice and stopping such evil people.

0

And that's what I'm afraid of. That no one, Do HAN especially can live with all this tension and hatred, and emerge unscathed. Redemption comes with death and I'm really really afraid that light is not going to be shining at the end for all of our little gang...

yes. this such a good point. even if they do take Yoon down, and let's say (for the sake of argument) they save society from a great evil, maybe even saving some lives in the future...but what cost is it to them? To their beings? I think this is a question lawyers and law enforcement people grapple with a lot. I think it does involve self-sacrifice, giving up a piece of yourself for a greater good you believe in, that you believe is worth it. I'm hoping that in this drama world, though, our team members come out okay in every respect.

@anothernicole I think part of the problem is that in Su-ji's mind Do-han's character is so deeply intertwined with his fake smarmy persona that it's not a stretch for her to believe he's like every other politician; using them for his own personal gain. So far, despite the evidence and backstory she unearthed about Do-han, she has yet to know him as a person. And I think that is what's causing her to mistrust him so much. She's trying to corner him into a position whereby he can't help but play along with them. But in doing so she's jeopardizing the long mission. Do-han needs to explain the whole situation to her and drop his mask in order for them to truly trust each other and work together as a team in the future.

ahhh ok yes. that helps me a lot. I was having trouble understanding why a great detective (and I believe she is) wouldn't see a bigger picture---but if that picture is directed by a person she doesnt respect (DH because as you say, she sees him as being so smarmy) then why trust it. yes. thank you.

I agree with you and TeriYaki. I can sort of understand Suji's stance since she was a cop (and probably more like the naive Eunjoong than I previously expected) and she doesn't have all the information on Yoon. She doesn't know about the scale of corruption like we do. But I am slightly frustrated that she can't see the bigger picture. Even Bomi can see DH's POV. 10 years undercover and licking the boots of your enemies is not something you can take lightly. The only reason they got this far in getting Yoon is because of the sacrifices DH has made - sacrifices I can't see any of the trio being willing to make.

I do not like this talk of "final missions". We have waaaay too many episodes left for victory to be at hand. This kind of talk comes right before everything (or someone) gets shot to hell, and there are too many characters whose death I do NOT want to see.

Thank you for the recap once again. I worry too about Suji exposing Do Han since it could ruin his anonymous identity and change the game. Since Suji had always been a rightous and just cop, I do understand the personal issue with the case right now to a certain extent. On a happier note, I am loving the interactions between Kyung Soo and Bomi. That underpants incident was just LOL. I seriously hope for more of their precious moments in the next couple of episodes.

And wouldn't there be some kind of illustration on the package that would tell the girl what kind of "food" she was about to eat?
I think they were trying a little too hard to be funny there.

The layers are getting peeled back one by one. I also had a bad feeling about the showdown in the church (more on that in the next episode's recap) but it was a long time coming. Things were coming to a head and it was a matter of time before the group of vigilantes confronted each other.

I like that there seems to be a sense of purpose driving the overarching plot. Things that seem to don't make sense, come together a few episodes later. And still new mysteries are thrown into the mix. Why the butterfly motif? What's the new deal between the congresswomen and Chief Prosecutor? Why is Si wan suddenly so interested in the Se Won (yucks)? And why did he kill Yu Na in the first place? Not to say the drama's perfect - it's a bit implausible how hordes of police can repeatedly let a couple of fugitives escape - but fingers crossed that the larger plot threads are going to be resolved neatly.

What I really appreciate is how understandable our characters are. While it could be frustrating for the viewer to see how the team distrusts Do Han, they've been given just cause not to trust their leader 100%. Placed in their shoes, given the power that their leader has to easily betray them to serve his own purposes, it was always going to be an uphill battle to get everyone on the same page. And let's face it, Do HAN isn't the most inspiring, motivational team leader out there. He's bee an opaque presence as far as the lookout team is concerned, and had not given them any indication that he had skin in the game.

Hope to see all of them work out their issues sooner rather than later, though.

Im pretty sure si wan is getting close to se won for one reason and one reason only, to get more information out from her about what the police is doing. Im sure once se won is in love with him(which i honestly think is already happening cus she was always alone and i tell u that first person to reach out is just special) he will try to get her to ask her mom for some info nothing too obvious of course but its really sick and i hope se won doesn't get depressed once she finds out

Hmm...I don't think he is getting close to her for information. I think he is getting close to her because as he's said a few times, it's "fun". And I think his definition of fun is very, very dangerous and sick. In a prior episode, when he told his mom something fun happened at school, she looked scared/worried. I think she knows how ShiWan has "fun". I wouldn't be surprised if he killed the family dog because it was "fun". And his dad probably praised him. So I think he is getting close to Se Won because he is going to hurt her and it will be "fun". That she is Soonae 's daughter whom he recognized will only make it more fun and adds thrill for him. When you're sick, you're sick. I wonder if his dad tortured him too via discipline, made him like that, or was he just born this way, a psychopath. So I don't think Se Won will have time to get depressed...she will be more worried about staying alive. Argh, I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about him.

Eermergerd, exactly my thought. Seeing mom's expression makes me wonder whether a family pet die every time he said "It's fun." It's beginning to take the same meaning as Shin Sung-rok's "Take care of your health." T_T
Se-won has been shown as capable in using her logic. Might be grasping for straws, but hope she will be perceptive enough to not fall completely under his spell.

"how can she justify that the team can use him, but Do-han can’t use them, especially when she puts him at risk?"

I'd say that he used them first, and a lot, and he put *them* at risk, so I don't think at this point she has any reason to feel like she should trust him or worry about him. The viewer has a lot more information than she does.

"No matter what the team holds against Do-han, he did protect them"
I mean I guess. After he first put them in situations they needed protecting from. And except for when Suji got shot, he never risked his cover for it. It sure seemed like he was willing to let Bomi get caught (and, as the viewer knows, nearly killed) rather than blow his cover. From Suji's point of view, it certainly looks like he's risked their lives and freedom for his personal vengeance at their expense, and why would she want to protect him for that? And Do-han really doesn't have anyone to blame for that but himself. When you keep everything a secret, even if you think you have good reason to, you take the risk that people will misinterpret what you do--especially when, here, Suji's interpretation is pretty reasonable, given what she knows.

This was an excellent recap, but I gotta disagree with your conclusions here.

I agree. I mean all they know is that do-han works for prosecutor yoo, and acts as a jerk most of the time they had encountered him. And then, they knew the leader set a trap for them and only (narrowly) save them.

so, I guess, wondering about his ulterior motive is not too hard to understand. they don't know what he's doing to get prosecutor yoo down, and they don't know whey he's doing it either. all they knew is this guy let the soo-ji's daughter's murderer go.

I don't usually have a hard time following the shows I watch, but I need some clarification on this one! Is the man in the hospital Prosecutor Lee Kwan Woo's real father? And does that mean that the mother he killed is Father Do Han's real mother? I am a little confused as to who is who. And which one of them beat the other till they needed to be hospitalized? And what happened to Lee Kwan Woo's real mother if that is the case? Help!

Yes, our Do-han's (formerly Kwan-woo) father is the guy in the mental hospital. Do-han's father was in a common law marriage with the priest's (real Do-han's) mother. After our Do-han's father killed the priest's mother, the priest beat him up. I'm actually unclear on the mother. I think they had said previously that she died when he was young, but that might actually be the the priest's mother since he's really Do-han.

Ah, the much needed backstory is finally told. Him and the priest's story is heartbreaking. Kwan-woo must be burdened with a lot of hate, not to mention guilt, I totally nodded when Bo-mi spoke on his behalf on that conversation with Soo-ji. Guessing he must have face unsurmountable walls and heartbreaks, before deciding to go all evil vigilante.
Not much ass-kicking by Soo-ji this ep, is that why plot holes are somewhat more obvious..? Am confused about Do-han's & Soo-ji's motivations and behaviours here, why is she going stealth mode finding proofs about Leader-nim when he literally dropped it in the middle of the street in front of her car? *scratching head* Is the paper in the drawer that hard of an evidence, considering the way she obtained it? Hoping she had a plan all along, especially regarding that phone call about turning herself in. That sure caught me off guard *scratch head some more*
Also, am a bit disappointed that (both of) Do-han's identity was so easily unearthed. Guess now we know why he is working so hard to keep that smarmy persona, it's the only defence against a background check. Taking his step-brother name is meaningful in a way, but kinda make it pointless..? If even Eun-joong can follow the trail so easily (aside from the eye-roll-inducing coincidence of seeing him in person), surely Yoon would've found out in a snap...

I had so many conflicting feelings when Suji caught Do Han in the church. If I were her, I'd probably do the same, b/c Do Han hasn't really given them any reason to trust them and he willingly let Bomi almost die and get Kyungsoo caught during his hacking attempt. Yet, his master plan is crucial in order to catch Yoo Seung Roo.

I'm so glad that the priest finally talked more than onr minute in this episode. Shin Dong Wook is really underutilised.

I still dislike Dohan, but after he met his father my heart couldn't help but root for him. Nobody would be able to live a normal live after experiencing the same things he did.

Siwan is getting creepier w/ every episode. When is he finally going to attack that poor girl?

This episode was sooo good! Throughout the show I was like, Yes! Then when it ended I realized why, there were barely any cop or prosecutor scenes! It was mainly all about our vigilante team! Yeah! The show is so much better without the herds running around!
Wow, we got both Kyungsoo and the leader and the priest in these episodes! Our team can now really join forces, and work t-o-g-e-t-h-e-r! Loving the pace we are at...the name/identity switch, what a twist! This show is so good!
KYK and his dad, such a short scene but they were both so good, brought tears to my eyes. It's one thing to be imprisoned/detained, but to have lost one's mind because of the trauma and torture...shattering, and inhuman. Even if freed/released, his dad will never be the same. Argh, I feel for our leader, it's amazing HE's remained sane. I guess his revenge has kept him going. KYK's emotional scenes have been short so far, but every single one of them have been perfect, I can feel his pain and inner struggles. KYK is such a good actor here! Bomi said it best, he is just like them, if not in worse shape, he is one of them! With what he has been through (that we know so far) and his dad's state, it's amazing he can put on a smile, even if fake. That takes a lot of self control and determination! He has been patient and has been waiting/planning for a very long time, as he said, patience Suji, patience...and I like that Bomi is the one who can see his side, and "accept" him, she understands darkness, while Suji and Kyungsoo I think are just not quite as "dark"...they, in a way, are still "righteous"...
Kyungsoo and Bomi, still so perfect together and in tune! At first I thought why isn't she supporting him like he did for her, but then I realized she is being tough for him so he can still have hope. Let her be the one with negative thoughts so he can counter her with positivity. But, when he kept talking about living a normal life, being happy everyday, with such a hopeful look on his face...I'm scared for you Kyungsoo, these simple wishes always seem to be a bad omen in kdrama...please Show, save our puppy and make his wishes come true!

I'm actually glad Suji is taking charge, or at least shaking things up. Things can't stay as they are, Dohan's cover is already blown, as is Bomi's. I think your worries are legitimate TeriYaki regarding Suji, but I think they will realize that they both need each other to get their justice.
It's time for a new direction for our Lookout team as it looks like our leader is losing ground and really will need help moving forward, from his teammates.
Ah, this show is so good!
Thank you for the recap TeriYaki!

I agree, I love how much Bomi is the voice of reason in this episode. It's really easy for Su-ji to be blinded by her dislike of Do-han but I'm sure she has a plan and isn't just going to recklessly endanger the team, they've come too far together for that. Watching KYK cry really broke my heart, he does those kind of scenes so well (see him cry over his little brother in D-Day), I cannot wait for them all to be on the same page and start trusting one anotherproperly.
Also, the corruption in this drama is so deeply rooted that it amazes me. When you think Assembly woman Chae is going to be of some use to our Vigilante group, she reveals just how selfish she really is. It's like watching any presidential election campaign in this world.

When KS was talking about the normal life, I started to wonder if anyone besides KS can lead a normal life after this. BM is a fugitive. So is SJ. Even if Yoon was the bad guy, BM and SJ still broke a bunch of laws. Yoon's misdeeds doesn't cancel their illegal actions out, though it may mitigate the number of years they have to serve in prison. I think one of the reasons why EJ is so determined to catch SJ is that he wants to prevent her from breaking even more laws. Like, she must have racked up like 20 counts of crimes by now. I'm annoyed at how he wants to protect her, without truly understanding what she needs protection from.

I could be the only one who is excited to see how she confronts them at the end. I always put myself in Suji's shoes (and our trio) so I understand well why it might seems reckless on her part. She already has a negative perception with Prosecutor Jang, and there's no way she will want to think from his POV. Regardless how great his plan is, he left them in the dark, and he deserves that distrust from the trio. He was the one who caused their distrust.

Anyway, I started to worry if there will be enough material but we have 12 /6 epi more after this week, so hopefully it will enough until the end.

i really don't understand why do han didn't want to share the plan with suji after 1 year. it's amazing that she was obedient to him for this long tbh, how did he expect her to follow orders without any explanation until his "plan" was finished?? it's pretty clear to me that he was better off telling her his plan once she started acting on her own, because he might have been able to actually keep his identity hidden that way.

i can't be that mad at suji because it's do han's fault in the end haha

I think she was obedient because she had no choice, and she's also needed time so the news about her can cool down a bit ?

She was obedient since previous missions didn't involve YSR. I don't think he made any promises when she joined the team. He just kept her from jail so that she could pursue her revenge and gave her a job, so she can make a living while on the run. She didn't feel a compelling need to find out who he is. I think the one I'm most impressed with is Bomi, who was patient for 5 years!

Now that she knows he knows YSR is involved, she's gotten suspicious and impatient. It's obvious to her that the leader brought her in because of YSR. And then when Bomi's case came around which also involved YSR, she knew for sure they were being used.

DH's been on his revenge mission for 10 years and basically living his life under a false name. I can't see him trusting SJ that easily, especially when SJ is the type to charge ahead without thinking (example: when she assaulted Shi Wan, which led to Yuna's death investigation being buried in the news). SJ's impulsiveness is her charm, but this can suck in a long-term revenge mission.

I'm a little disappointed at how easily the team was able to figure out it was Dohan. I mean, I didn't want is-he-or-isn't-he drawn out for ten episodes but he pretty much confirmed it right when he dropped the envelope off in front of Suji. I have been looking forward to Suji ripping Dohan a new one, but this plan of her's makes me really nervous.... Just use him and his position close to Yoon in return, don't expose him!

'No matter what the team holds against Do-han, he did protect them.' For his own ends, really. Again, straight up exploiting the grieving and mentally ill doesn't exactly make him the shining beacon of goodness really, and I have a feeling Dohan was prepared for the team turning against him no matter what happens. His main goal had always been Chief Prosecutor Yoon, and from whatever glimpses we've seen, he's capable and not above using just about anyone to make it happen. To him, this is probably little more than a teensy little inconvenience he feels he can settle, and this is the type of team formation I'd like to see, really. I wanted Dohan to know that he'd get bitten in the ass if he kept up this shtick, and the show delivers retribution beautifully.

As to those people who crowed about how Dohan 'did give the team what they wanted', please bear in mind that Dohan has been using Bomi and Kyungsoo for a minimum of three to five years, and Bomi's own case was only settled very recently under immense pressure and initiative from Sooji's part- even Kyungsoo's case is only being recently reopened and looked into. If he was really so good at making true his promises that way, why did he initially ask them to drop their own individual revenge and 'not get blindsided'? So much for making true his promises, right.

I don't think you can blame Do-han the leader for everything. He is not God, and can't control the turn of events. Why did Kang Ji Gu only reappear now to kill the uncle? Maybe Do-han was also waiting for him to reappear...it's one of the plot holes, what happened for Kang Ji Gu to suddenly reappear 5 years later? He said he came back to split the money and that is when he found out from the uncle about the second daughter. So where was he for the last 5 years?! Was he recently released from jail for another crime and Do-han found out about it? Did the uncle just get the money?!
To get Yoon Sr, Do-han is laying out his plan very carefully, without the right elements in place, at the right time, he may not get anywhere and noone will get their justice. I think the point that you are missing is how everything seems to be related and intertwined. Do-han chose his team carefully, for a reason, I am sure there are more victims of Yoon who would love to get their justice too.

Kyungsoo's mom is related to Do-han's case, solving one will solve the other. How can Kyungsoo's mom come back if Yoon Sr is still in power and Detective Nam can still get rid of her because she is still a threat. What would be the point of finding her just to get her killed? There is a rhyme and logic/order for why/when things need to happen. Would solving Yuna's case have solved Bomi's?! Just because Yoon Jr may cause Yoon Sr his job, would that bring justice to all of Yoon Sr's past evil deeds?! Would Suji have looked at solving Bomi's or Kyungsoo's case if Yuna's case had been resolved one year ago?!

Yes Do-han is not perfect and did some shady things, but he is the best if not the only one to help our Lookout team. If Bomi and Kyungsoo hadn't been recruited by Do-han, where would they be? Would they have pursued justice on their own? Who would have helped them, kids/orphans?! Would they have the confidence to fight injustice as they do now? Do-han did a lot of bad, but he did a lot of good too, we should be able to acknowledge that. Do you think Do-han wanted to wait 17 years? He is waiting for everything to fall into place so he can get Yoon for good! And it looks like right now may be the right time, only if everything can work out together...

4
reply

Required fields are marked *

Nope! Guess what, I definitely can :D He's literally recruiting people who had been victimised by Yoon Sr. to leapfrog over their backs, which is kinda why this entire fiasco actually exists. He doesn't band together a bunch of like-minded individuals to have them help him, it's basically 'I will manipulate x y z to get my aims- oh whoops she won't listen to me! Wow she's the worst isn't she (laughs)' and to him, it almost feels like a game of seeing how much control he can exert before they start questioning than an actual revenge plan with goals and checkpoints.

In fact, even under Yoon Sr.'s employment, he hasn't really done too much before Yoon Sr. turned against him and got suspicious. Eunjoong's riding his rear and knows what he's up to- he's getting squished on all sides, but Dohan's reaction shows that he legitimately just thinks it a game. It's really very hard to sympathise with a character who shows little remorse for this kind of thing, really, and I feel that a lot more people are going to turn when they watch 19-20, because it explains Dohan's rather...interesting involvement in Yuna's case, and it's left a bitter taste in my mouth ever since.

Ah, I get it! Dohan the leader has been playing a game for the last 17 years! It's really not a revenge or plan of action, it's just so he can feel superior to and manipulate the kids Bomi and Kyungsoo since they were victimized and are vulnerable, unlike him of course! He just wants to be in control, that's what this is all about! And Suji being a like-minded person, because obviously Bomi and Kyungsoo are not like-minded people, they don't want justice and are so much dumber than her for blindly following their leader for years, is a thorn on his side. Ah, I see now that he really regrets recruiting her because she is not a puppet he can easily use. He should just kick her out of the team or let her die, since he doesn't care and she is in his way. Wait, didn't he already have that opportunity? He is so dumb! He missed it! Dohan the leader is so unfeeling, he has no remorse, because anyway it's all just a game for him! A mind control game!
Gosh, thanks for explaining this, I don't know what I was watching!

Why is Suji even staying in the team? She should just join forces with like-minded people, like Soonae and Eunjoong since Bomi and Kyungsoo are not like-minded at all! Soonae and Eunjoong can definitely help her, why stay with the Lookout team? She is not like Dohan, why keep using the kids and Dohan is just too evil for her. We need to blame him for everything, it's not like they are a team and he is their leader.
