Profilers team up to take down serial killers in tvN’s Criminal Minds

What is it with guys in uniform that makes them so attractive, ’cause damn, Lee Jun-ki (Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo) looks good. When I first heard that there was going to be a Korean remake of Criminal Minds, I was interested because it’s an old favorite of mine among the many procedural shows out there and also because the production companies behind the remake have really solid credits to their name: NEW produced hit films Miracle in Cell No. 7, Roaring Currents, and Train to Busan, and Taewon Entertainment is known for IRIS and the Marrying the Mafia trilogy. And then, they go ahead and cast Lee Jun-ki, and I was completely sold.

The premise of the American show is pretty basic: Criminal Minds revolves around a team of federal agents who profile criminals in order to catch them. It’s a long-running show in its twelfth season, and inevitably, the cases can get repetitive, but I think its saving grace is the rapport between the team members of the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit. There are some really cute relationships in the original series—like between Morgan and Penelope, or Morgan and Reid (why did you have to leave Morgan?!)—so I’m hoping the Korean remake can replicate those aspects of the show, especially if they’re considering a multi-season format as was reported in earlier articles.

Production is currently underway and the following stills have been released picturing the cast on set, giving us brief glimpses of our team of profilers, as well as a frail-looking Park Geun-hyung (Because I Love You), who will play the director of the fictional agency NCI. Lee Jun-ki’s team members will include Sohn Hyun-joo (Three Days), Moon Chae-won (Goodbye Mr. Black), Lee Sun-bin (Missing 9), and Go Yoon (Monster).

The station hasn’t confirmed Criminal Minds’s place on its schedule yet, but they’re in talks to have the remake premiere in July in their new Wednesday-Thursday slot. tvN, you’ve given us a good American remake (The Good Wife) and a crappy one (Entourage)—let’s have the pendulum swing back to good, shall we?

I mean, if he's just naturally like that, then fine. But why put effort to look like a malnourished stick-man (albeit a very handsome one)?!

I thought he lost weight and build up muscles for that role, no?

Yeah, he looks like he lost a lot of weight. Personally I find him more attractive when he looks buffier ♥ I hope the skinny trend in male actors in Korea disappear 'cos I want my male leads to have more meat on their bones! lol

While Criminal Minds has some really interesting stories and great episodes, it's the characters that really make the show. Yes, the cases are compelling and exciting. But the main characters aren't just crime solvers. They interact as a family. They all have great friendships and that makes you root for them just a bit more. I think the reason shows like Criminal Minds last so long is because they make the characters easy to get invested into. Mix in with new excitement from every changing new cases, you have a solid show that is easy to watch week after week.

What will really break or make this drama is how they do this. Even if they turned out a perfectly good crime drama, I'd still be disappointed if they didn't capture those relationships. Many Korean crime dramas I've watched are pretty slick (maybe this is just me?). They have a different feel than American crime TV. I wonder how they'll balance genre and tone so that it can be a uniquely Korean drama while still capturing whats great about Criminal Minds.

You make me want to go watch Criminal Minds a little. But so many seasons..... I do like the show whenever I catch random episodes on tv.

From the many crime/mystery Korean dramas I've watched, I feel like Tunnel has been the one that captured the most emotions from the main cast. The relationships between the good guys are great.

I can see the cast like this:

Lee Jun-ki : Derek Morgan
Sohn Hyun-joo : Aaron Hotchner
Moon Chae-won : Jennifer Jareau
Lee Sun-bin : Not sure.. Maybe Emily Prentiss or Penelope Garcia?
Go Yoon : Dr. Spencer Reid

What do you think?

Garcia: Challenge me, you beautiful behavioral analyst.

Garcia in her sexy voice: Hey baby.
Morgan: Baby girl, we need to talk.
Garcia: PG or NC-17?
Morgan: You’re on speakerphone…
Garcia: I charge extra for groups. Gypsies? As in Gypsies Tramps and Thieves? Oh, bless you all for turning my life into a Cher song!

Garcia: Are you lonely in the Lone Star state? And are you wearing chaps?
Morgan: Only in your dreams, Garcia

That's exactly what I'll do if we don't get similar group dynamics. I'm not saying that I won't give the Korean one a chance, but it's that dynamic that makes the show so enjoyable.

Required fields are marked *

I watched all 3 CM up to date... I am certain CM Korea would surpass that dynamics.

Because there was no Morgan in Suspect Behaviour & Beyond Borders, these two series are a bit boring & awkward. But because there's Hotchner & Rossi in Beyond Border in form of Garrett, that's why it's better than Suspect Behaviour.

I trust that LJG will deliver that dynamics within the team. With MCW & SHJ? That's a huge bonus.

I don't really worry much about the dynamics of the main casts as I have watched many works of the main cast particulary LJG, SHJ & MCW. What could possibly go wrong with the abilities of these actors.

I just want diverse stories.
*Pyscho serial Killing
*Terrorism
*Cyber Crime
*DID
*Abduction
*Cult stories
*North Korean secret invasion
*Religious obsession of course not same as the cult story
And more..... really Hoping for diversity..... I hope all 20 episodes will be different from one another. I hope no repetition of cases of the same type.

Sorry, but was proper research done before writing this post? Like someone pointed out NEW is not producing it anymore with Taewon Ent. but Studio Dragon is. I assumed since they switched from KBS to TVN, they made changes. And also the director of NCI is going to be played by Kim Yeong Cheol. That info came directly from Taewon CEO on his Instagram and I think it was also in the earlier casting news. Not trying to sound preachy, but people need to have the right info.

Honestly if people are expecting a carbon copy of the original words for words, flirt by flirt, they should just stick to the American version lol For all we know, they might have some of the cast married to each other or siblings like they did with Will and Diane in the Korean The Good Wife. The moment Will called her "noona" and didn't just mean it as older female lol As a big fan of the original, I still loved the Korean version as it was. I barely even compared because I decided to watch it as a show on its own.

Seriously, thanks for the breaking news on CM. Along with LJG, Sohn Hyun-joo is looking very spiffy.

I hope the camaraderie translates well in the Korean version. A similar committed sense of family among the agents kept me watching for 13 seasons of NCIS -- until my Kdrama addiction took over. I'd bailed earlier on CRIMINAL MINDS owing to heinousness fatigue. Since there's no way the Korean adaptation will run for a decade or more, I'm hoping that we're in for a nice close-knit team with interesting character arcs and development.

I don't think there is like straight Morgan or Prentis. The Executive Producer of CM-US also tweeted that Korean is making it's own version. I am sure CM Korean make their own amazing version.

The main ensemble consist of Profilers, Communication Liaison & Technical Analyst which all series, CM, CM-SB,CM-BB, have it. So I am so excited to see about the characters of CM Korea.

Also, I am so overjoyed and hype to see LJG in modern drama. Although I love to see his mystical look in Saguek but modern drama is also a delight.

With what I've seen on the Taewon Ent. Instagram Account: LJG as Derek, SHJ as Hotch, MCW as Emily/Elle, LSB as JJ, Go Yoon as Reid, Yoo Sun as Penelope and Kim Young Chul as the director.

I believe the Korean actors will have their own interpretation of the characters, it won't be exactly like the US version. There might be a mix of characters for some of them as well. But I'm almost sure about who is who. MCW is the only one ATM that we have little to no detail about her character. If there will be any new characters unique to this version of CM it would most likely be LJG and/or MCW's role.

I don't think there exactly like plain Gideon or Rossi or Hotcher.
LJG = Supervisory Special Agent (SSA)/Profiler as the lead I think LJGs role would take the emotional aspect of Gideon.
SHJ=SSA/Profiler/Unit Chief/I think he would take Gideon's leadership.
MCH=SSA/Profiler ( I think MCW maybe a combo of Ellen/Emily)
LSB=SSA/Communication Liaison
YS=SSA/Technical Analyst (unlike Penelope who is just pure technical analyst, I think Yoo Sun's character will be at the same time an agent)
GY=SSA/Profiler

Sorry Moon Lovers was far from disappointment maybe here on fangirling dramabean site. Moon Lovers is one of the best kdrama ever produced. That's a fact. The most expensive kdrama eversold. It's a drama that producers don't need to buy nominations & awards to sell because it's selling on its own.

Too bad that Korean viewers are discriminating idol actors but despite that it was number 1 in rating CPI. How dare you say MLSHR was a disaster?

It is too bad that SBS has limited rights to the drama thus they also gave limited support.

Required fields are marked *

I don't simply just bring in the money for the heck even when I know people clearly say that MLSHR was disappointment because of the rating in Korea. If you are logical with your analysis, actually the rating in Korea was not as bad. The rating was actually average but definitely it wasn't what SBS was expected considering the drama was quite expensive for them & with such limited rights to the drama.

Well, it may not have rated as expected in Korea but it did amazingly internationally.

As to it's filming making style, MLSHR is a paradigm shift for kdrama. Most kdrama was so draggy, too slow, spoon feed everything in short predictable. MLSHR wasn't like it... it's was a very intelligent drama.

Quality:
Great cinematography, the best musical score ever in kdrama. The ending.. I know people didn't like it...but to me it was the most poetic ending. The camera focus... well that style actually brought in the emotions of this drama esp. on LJG part. Such style though not often use in k-drama but you commonly notice it in films. Also, in MLSHR you can't find unnecessary recycled scenes & no unnecessary flashbacks... if it's a flashback, they've shown brand new scenes.

Thus to me, MLSHR was the most engaging kdrama I've ever watched. I have watched it at least 3 times. In addition, the pace for the drama was just perfect. Fast forward is my fave button when watching kdrama... but not in MLSHR.

And, btw I never thought it's an argument. If it is? I don't need to win. I am just pointing out my piece to some people who for the heck say or unreasonably say that the drama was a disappointment.. which is something I don't understand.

Going back to CM. As a CM follower, I have no doubt that CM Korea casts can deliver an ensemble with amazing dynamics. I just wished that the cases are more diverse than the American CM.
