Park Hae-jin’s Four Men to be prequel to Man to Man

Well, this is unexpected: Recent reports indicate that Park Hae-jin’s upcoming drama Four Men will actually be a prequel to his currently airing Man to Man. According to sources from the drama’s production company, Mountain Movement Story, Four Men was planned in conjunction with Man to Man since last year, and they’re currently in talks with SBS to secure a timeslot at the station.

The upcoming romantic thriller will center around a female detective who gets swept up in various events following the loss of the man she loves. Early reports mentioned Park Hae-jin playing four different characters and twins, so now I’m wondering whether they’re all just personas related to his job. Well, if the heroine gets involved with all of them, talk about occupational hazards. Part of me feels relieved by the news that Four Men is a prequel to Man to Man, because when I read earlier posts describing Park Hae-jin’s four-in-one role, my mind was doing somersaults trying to figure out how that would play out. I was afraid they were going to go with multiple personalities or four doppelgangers, which is already two too many.

I was kind of surprised to hear that Four Men was being shopped at SBS, since Man to Man is a JTBC show, and it feels weird that the prequel would air at a different station. Not that SBS would be a bad choice, because the broadcaster’s Six Flying Dragons (<3) is the only prequel drama I can think of at the moment, and they did a spectacular job with that. I’m also kind of iffy about the romance aspect of it, because I’m afraid it might color my take on his character’s current relationship with Man to Man’s Kim Min-jung if he has this epic romance with another heroine. I do look forward to learning more about our Agent K, though, since Man to Man is being really stingy about his background.

In other developments, director Oh Jin-seok, of Yongpal and fusion sageuk My Sassy Girl, will be joined by Kim Je-young as screenwriter. Kim Je-young, whose writing credits include Wonderful Radio and Miss Wife, is currently directing the Cheese in the Trap film, so he’ll be jumping from one project to the next with Park Hae-jin. With a different director and writer, I wonder if the light tone of Man to Man will carry over to its prequel, or if Four Men will have a darker, more serious vibe.

The producers hope to have the main and supporting cast lined up by July, and start filming in the latter half of the year. If it all goes according to schedule, we could see Seol-woo and his fantastic deadpan return to our screens before the end of 2017.

at this point, i'm not sure how it can keep the light tone when most of the comedy in man to man is based on Agent K being thrown into the celebrity world and the craziness that ensues ... i'll just have to suspend judgment for now ...

I had the same feeling. Hearing that it was a prequel made me all of a sudden less-excited to see it. I wanted it to be its own stand-alone drama, not connected to something I'm already watching. Not only that, the fact that Cha Do Ha exists right now, makes the thought of watching Four Men a bit sour. I have to wonder whether or not Four Men will end badly or will it end with some open-ending of a girl reminiscing about her would-be romance with Ghost agent K.

Then there's the issue of the order you watch the dramas in. Should you watch the prequel first and then Man x Man, would it leave you questioning the respective dramas' heroines? If you watch Man x Man first or are watching it now, would the prequel leave you feel cheated? Decisions.

No, but what about Cha Do-ha?! I don't want to see another woman love him like she does or, gasp better than she does!
On a less frantic note, maybe it's going to be the reason he decided to become a ghost agent. Maybe she gets kidnapped by terrorists and dies.

So i think the main hero in Saja wont be Seol Woo but another, maybe his twin, the other two character are just Seol Woo's cover . If that was the case then it''ll be ok to have a perfectly happy ending kkk.

Hmmm.... never a fan of prequels, tbh, but Park Hae Jin... so, I will check it out. I am however concerned about the romance aspect, because if all four of them turn out to be Agent K, this romance has nowhere to go but downhill. So maybe not all of them are Agent K and one of them is "just" a doppelganger? And he gets the happy romance and there is no interference and everyone gets to be happy? Yeah, I need more information. Until then my brain is just gonna spin it's wheels around this to come up with plausible scenarios. (but yeah, still so here for four Park Hae Jins)

The more I think about it, the more excited I am. IF the original description was accurate, then we'd get the fun of watching PHJ play four different people, one of them a character that we already love. And presumably the detective will fall for another brother, not Seol-woo, as that seems like too big of a mistake for the writers to make (if they mess with the Do-ha/Seol-woo ship, I riot).

Someone else in the comments mentioned that his dream about 'himself' killing Do-ha might actually have been about a brother killing her. In which case, damn. That's a nice, subtle lead-in.

Hmm...I understand Park Hae Jin really liked his character SW in Man x Man, but a prequel? Now it makes me worried about the ending of Man x Man! Nooo! If they leave it open or do something to Do-ha...I will strongly consider not watching the "prequel"!! I'm confuzzled, but there is just not enough information to go on at this point so I am not going to overthink it. Didn't the initial reports on Four Men describe it as a melodrama? If so, it will be a very different beast from the light-hearted humor of Man to Man.

I wonder if Four Men will turn out to be more "inspired-by," then hard and fast prequel? I'm just picturing Park Hae Jin getting into character to play Agent K and coming up with a back story about what would make someone turn ghost agent, then having conversations with people around him (like the director of CITT the movie) and everyone thinking, "that would be a great idea for a drama!" and running with it.

I like the idea of a detective for the lead female role. Park Hae Jin's starring projects (CITT and Man to Man) have had female roles I really loved in Hong Seol and Cha Do Ha. I am hopeful that Four Men will have another strong female lead even with 4 Park Hae Jin's running around.

The news surrounding this drama are very confusing. I barely wrapped my head around the whole 4 characters and twins thing and now I am confused again.
The fact that it will probably air on SBS isn't helping either and don't get me started on the writer. If it is a prequel wouldn't it make more sense to have the same writer?
One thing is sure, this drama definitely has my attention and I'm already looking forward to it.

Why can't this just be the entire new drama, not a prequel since it won't be written by the same writer ?

I think Paek Hae Jin have some difficulty to let go of his roles especially the ones he considered special, so he wants the best for such role & project. Such as CITT and we also know why. But they said this is also planned from last year. So not sure. Different writer could be good for me, since I couldn't get into with Man to Man, which is sad since I love him.

Yes, why not just make it a new drama? And I thought he has difficulty letting go or roles too! He's always choosing 'mysterious' roles lately. *sigh* Can't he play another adorable and smart chaebol heir like in My Love From the Stars? Maybe he wasn't happy to get switched to that role at the last minute, but it's still my favourite PHJ.

I have had enough heart break with prequel of TWDR (that is SFD) where Yeon hee was killed thus Lee Bangji was being bitter and lonely in the next story. So, if Seol woo had another woman he was madly in love with before he met Doha but they were be separated, I don't think I'd be able to live my life peacefully. I'm ambivalent about this prequel for the same reason as you, @tipsymocha. I want to get see Agent K's backstory before he met Cha Do-ha, but not at the expense of seeing him romancing another girl. Because it seems to me, his first genuine, moving relationship is with Cha Do-ha, and that before he met her, he didn't even know how to properly love someone.

Thanks for this bulletin, tipsymocha!

I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around four roles in one. It won't be the same without the bromance with Brother, so Agent K's genesis better be good. ;-)

Maybe we'll learn that he wasn't always a ghost, and that pivotal events sent him off on a solitary path. We might also get to see how he came to resort to faking his death in order to pull the plug on fake romances. I just hope the prequel has some comic relief in it.

At the moment, though, it's hard for me to think that far ahead while we still have a couple of weeks of MAN TO MAN left to savor. I'm already up to my eyeballs in the new crop of dramas. ;-)

Four men:

Dead Oppa: dies, leaving behind a grieving girlfriend who's a detective.

Cool Oppa: the hero, who will fall for, and romance the girl. He's charming and sweet, smiles a lot and laughs a lot. But he can be mean and hard, too, because all Cool Oppas are like that.

Evil Oppa: the villain, who will also fall for the girl, and do mysterious things like picking his teeth in the dark.

Smart Oppa: has a penchant for speaking in riddles, dresses in turtlenecks, will become a spy and the eventual ghost agent K. He will not be the main character here, rather, the drama will show glimpses of his past life. He won't fall in love with the girl because he'd be cold and enigmatic, but he will help Cool Oppa and the girl solve the murder of Dead Oppa and get rid of Evil Oppa.

But tbh, going undercover and having different identities and disguises is kinda one of my favorite things to see a character do. ?
