Kang Haneul, Park Joong-hoon may become the next Bad Guys

Kang Haneul (Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart: Ryeo) and Park Joong-hoon (Hanji, My Dear Desperado) have been offered roles in the upcoming spinoff of OCN’s 2014 dark thriller Bad Guys that starred a psychopathic Park Hae-jin and a ruthless Kim Sang-joong. This new season, titled Bad Guys: Age of Evil, will feature an entirely different cast of characters, and currently, both actors are reviewing the script positively.

The original Bad Guys was about how a group of violent criminals were coerced by a brutal officer of the law (Kim Sang-joong) to catch baddies even more powerful and amoral than themselves. The setup of the spinoff is supposed to be similar, and since the main writer from the original, Han Jung-hoon, has signed on to write this script, I’m assuming continuity and tone will be consistent. The PD has changed, however, from Kim Jung-min to Han Dong-hwa, who worked with writer Han on another OCN drama, Police Unit 38.

If he confirms, Kang Haneul will play third-year prosecutor named Noh Jin-pyung, who has just been assigned to the Seowon District Office. The character is recovering from a traumatic incident where he witnessed his mentor being murdered right in front of his eyes. Park Joong-hoon is also up for role as a Seowon District prosecutor named Woo Jae-moon. He believes in justice, but his methods of obtaining said justice are often extreme. With his hotheaded temper, he’s a troublemaker who often causes more complications in the cases he takes. And as a result, he’s a true outsider, the loner that no one wants to talk to at work. Additionally, tt was reported that Park Sung-woong (Man to Man) received an offer to play a money-hungry homicide investigator, but he has yet to confirm.

Both Kang Haneul and Park Joong-hoon haven’t worked on an OCN drama before, which is odd because I can totally imagine Kang Haneul with his piercing eyes playing a murderous psychopath (a favorite archetype of OCN dramas). But the bigger news is that Park Joong-hoon is even considering Bad Guys: Age of Evil because he hasn’t been on the small screen for 23 years, staying in film for most of his career (some of his many titles include Haeundae, Radio Star, My Dear Desperado, and Nowhere to Hide). His last drama was SBS’s Far Away Sonba River (1994), which featured him as a soldier in the Vietnam War. Filming for Bad Guys: Age of Evil is supposed to begin in July after casting ends.

So the weekend lineup for OCN is tentatively as follows: As soon as currently airing Tunnel ends, Duel (starring Jung Jae-young and Kim Jung-eun) will be broadcast. Afterwards, there’s webtoon adaptation Rescue Me that will begin in July, after which writer Choi Ran’s Black is supposed to start in September. So that likely puts Bad Guys: Age of Evil’s premiere sometime in November. Fall can’t come soon enough!

Kang Ha-neul's character in Empire of Lust was depraved and unhinged, and I thought he handled that well. So he could definitely do psychopath characters.

I watched it when Moon Lovers was airing. So it was a bit weird to see him and Kang Hanna playing siblings in Moon Lovers afterwards.

He was really good in Missing Noir M ! His character's description does not seem crazy for now.

Which makes me kinda sad. I will definitely prefer him as a psychopath than a prosecutor. ? I wish kdramas production teams do read this site ??

I loved Kang Ha Neul's cameo as a psychopath in Missing Noir M though. Kinda sad that the original cast won't be returning. But I'm definitely put this on my watchlist.

i'm going to miss the old cast but as far as OCN detective dramas go, their story was actually complete iirc. it also looks like they're going for a new premise too

Too bad that no one from the original cast will return, but if these two sign on that'll get me more excited for the spinoff. I wonder if the concept will stay the same, since they haven't announced any roles of criminals (in jail) yet.

I'm curious to see how the prosecutor roles fit into the new premise. When I first heard of this show being a spin-off, I was imagining an all new set of 'bad guys' and police teaming up. Since I have heard anything about new baddies, I'm hoping this doesn't go too deep into the legal (/illegal?) drama realm. However, if we're starting off the casting news with KHN and it only gets better from there... Well, let's just say I'd be even more psyched for this show than I already am.

If we are to guess which one KHN is likely to choose, based on his movies recently, I am pretty sure he is going to choose Bad Guys 2. I am bidding my early farewell early atm for KHN to be a rom-com lead.. At least both project looks promising!

Bad Guys 2 offers a more interesting role and JHN prefers meatier secondary roles than lead roles.

I think Kang want to avoid himself from being a hero in romance drama only. My intuition says he is likely to follow Kang Dong Won and Kim Nam Gil step! But I hope he will follow Yoo Ah In's step -going back and forth from chungmuro to drama, and still do romcom once in a while.

I've only seen Kang Hanuel in two things: the extended trailer of Moon Lovers and in the movie, Empire of Lust where he played a cowardly, snivelling rapist. He made quite an impression on me in Empire Of Lust that its hard to imaging him as a puppy in a romcom but I've heard that he's quite adorable in real life.

As for Bad Guys 2, I imaging he'll fit right in so, Bring it!!

When I saw the title I was expecting Kang Haneul to play a psychopath character. I can totally see him playing a damn good one. But I can also see him playing an upright prosecutor.

YES! Was expecting Kang Ha-neul as one of the Bad Guys, too. I thought that he'd be great at being a psycho killer, but since he's just good in general, whatever works w/ me, as long as he's in.

Ooh great casting news. I hope they confirm!

I've seen Kang Ha Neul play a creepy, psychopath before. I thought he would have a similar role here when I first glanced at the news title. Even though his cameo in Missing Noir M was short, he left a lasting impression.

Not sure if I like that there are a lot more prosecutors in this spinoff than the original. What about the bad guys?! So curious about them. I would love to see KHN be one of them.

Kang Haneul would be perfect as a psychopath as he was deliciously devilish in his cameo on Missing Noir M. He can have this joker-like villainous smile when he wants to. But he would be good as a good guy too. I can see him acting the part of a traumatized individual and he would be great at it. More Kang Haneul is always a good thing. More Kang Haneul = A happy me :D

OH YES! KANG HA NEUL! I've seen recommendations for Missing Noir M floating around here and there and finally got to it a couple of days ago. KHN as the psychopathic killer just wowed me. His creepy smile was like, oh geez, chills! I knew he'd be great, but he turned out really awesome! And it's only a cameo?! *sadface* (I just saw Ep 2 yesterday and thought KHN would still be around later). MNM is a really good show, can't believe it took me so long to get to it. I also have to confess Bad Guys is on my list to watch, but haven't gotten around to it either >.< So I will try and watch it before November comes.

Kang Ha-Neul can play anything. Honestly. He was fantastic Missing Noir M and of course, Moon Lovers.
That kid is so incredibly talented and it wouldn't surprise me if he ended up being one of the greats of his generation.
I imagine he's flip flopping between playing a good guy and a bad one.

I think they will accept this! Can we get Seo Jun Young, Lee Sang Yeob, Ji Il Joo and Dong Ha as the Bad Guys too? Seo Jun Young was fantastic in Sirius, and his cameo in Beautiful Mind was good, he is so underrated. I actually watched him in most drama. These four are verstile actors that I really want to see them in a good project in which they can display their talents.
