Jealousy Incarnate writer considers return to SBS with new drama
by tineybeanie
Reports are going back and forth regarding Jealousy Incarnate writer Seo Sook-hyang’s next project, and while the situation is still undecided, some sources state that she may be returning to SBS this fall. Reports are that the project will be a 50-episode weekender, which could potentially premiere in October following the run of the currently airing family drama Sister Is Alive.
It seems like Seo Sook-hyang is still in negotiations with SBS to determine if she’ll be working with them again. So the news outlets have been cautious to explicitly state that final decisions and official announcements have yet to be made. However, with Jealousy Incarnate having been the lead Wednesday-Thursday drama in its time slot, hitting solid double-digits ratings (a solid showing in today’s competitive environment), I can see why SBS is eager to get the writer back onboard the team.
The one thing I am iffy about is the possibility this next project may be a 50-episode series. In my opinion, the light, breezy style of Seo’s dramas (Pasta, Jealousy Incarnate) is more suited to shorter miniseries. But she does have amazing comedic timing, so I’m hoping that if it does end up being a longer drama, it’ll be a sitcom like the High Kick series, and I’ll be blown away by all the funny.

Although I didn't watch Pasta, I know about Jealousy Incarnate. This writer is great at comedic relief and I wonder if SBS really will be working with her again after her last success. If it's a 50 epsiode show though, I'm unsure about how it will go but hopeful.
(I'm currently watching Go Kyung Pyo in Chicago Typewriter and he is just adorable.)

With a track record of Pasta and Jealousy Incarnate, 50 episodes of well done funny just might work! Let's see what happens.

Yeah, I'm optimistic that she can pull off a 50 ep. drama. Jealousy Incarnate was 24 eps. and it rarely felt draggy to me. I just wish she had developed some of the side characters more, so hopefully she'll do that better this time.
I'm no longer daunted by long dramas, and I love her writing, so this news is making me do a happy dance!

If the other 2 side triangles have developed and Hwashin/Nari story goes beyond the wedding, into their marriage life (awww, I'd love to see their reaction when they found out Nari's pregnant), JI could easily become more than 24eps and I'll be happy to watch it!

Jealousy Incarnate as a matter of fact can be turned into 50-Ep sitcom like drama that I'd be happy to watch week after week. This way we will get to realize the full potential of the extended family members and all those side characters in the broadcasting station and the wonderful doctor and nurse team.
Another previous drama of the same writer, Miss Korea, is over 20 ESP as I recall which is not draggy at all.

50 episodes of JI would work because there are so many characters and the team is a hoot to watch.
Can't say the same thing about Pasta though, it gets draggy towards the middle and I cannot stand the extreme lead characters (male lead being extra alpha / douchebag, while the female lead is very doormat).
So I would have to chalk it up to the casts and PD.

50 episodes means we'll probably not get Gong Hyo Jin :( I miss her!

As much as I love Gong Hyo-jin and Jo Jung-seok, I'd prefer it if neither of them were in this-- in my head, they're busy having ramen and making snowbabies. ?

Ohhh, if I recall correctly, this writer also did Miss Korea as well as Jealousy Incarnate and Pasta, and those are three of my all time favorite dramas. I've never been able to commit to a 50 ep weekender, but this may sway me. This writer tends to create the most interesting female leads in dramaland. I always felt I should dislike GHJ's characters in both Jealousy Incarnate and Pasta but the combination of excellent acting and strong writing made them some of my faves.

I loved Miss Korea too! It's a drama I feel like I don't hear about much---doesn't seem that popular? Some dramas you hear about over and over again after the drama is over, but not Miss Korea. So I always feel like it's a underrated gem. Maybe I just talk to the wrong people ahaha. All of these three dramas weren't perfect and had characters that would have been so irksome if they were in another drama with other actors. But somehow this writer must make it work. It's like a superpower.

Miss Korea) is such an underrated gem. Pasta was one of my first dramas ever, and my first exposure to GHJ, and after I learned the same team (and, obviously the Voice himself, Lee Sun Gyun) were in it, I watched it right away. It's so lovely and moody, and the soundtrack is perfection.
I feel like that's this writer's strength - creating such clear pictures into small microcosms of society and filling them with lovely, real characters who you can't help but root for. None of these dramas have really "evil" villains in them, but they all have interesting conflicts and unexpected solutions to those conflicts.

I think I'll give Miss Korea another chance after reading these comments and realizing the same writer wrote Jealousy Incarnate, one of my fave dramas of hundreds of them. I know I started MK but it didn't grab me.

Definitely do it -- it's a slow burn kind of show, but in a good way. Not a lot happens beyond the central premise, but it still is really good.

Yes, please give it another try. The first few episodes are a tad slow but if you can connect with the characters then the rest would be worth it. Don't expect laugh-out-loud funny but there is humor in it. And like the poster above I really dig its moodiness and its awesome soundtrack.

It ran exactly at the same time that You Who Came from the Stars did and you know what a sensation that drama was. So Miss Korea simply got lost in the midst of that frenzy. And this was just before Dramabeans recruited a bunch of recappers so it did not have a dedicated space on this site for fans to discuss. But yeah, I loved MK too.

I wish she went with KBS or MBC instead even though I loved Jealousy Incarnate (also their weekend dramas tend to do better)
I'm still upset at the scrapping of Ppal-gang's storyline because of netizens, I know she wasn't well liked but I like it less when writers are forced to change their initial vision.

She definitely needs to have some changes in her writing style if she is to write 50 epi (or more depends on the rating), and maybe have at least 2 main separate lovelines. -love triangle like JI works for miniseries, but if you give us something like that for 50 epi, it will too exhausting. Probably write something like KBS weekend drama will be good. SBS weekend drama is doing quite good lately, Unni Is Alive is getting decent numbers especially these days MBC weekend slot are not doing very well.
And please get Lee Sang Yeob to be main lead. I will say this million times until I get one - the one which can be considered as his break out role. And Seo Ji Hye too (she was great in JI).

Though as much as I love JI, 50 eps? I'll check in the first few to get a taste of it. It gotta be JI-good for me to invest my time on it.
On the other hand, if it's 50 eps of JJS? Yes!
JJS AND GHJ? Where can I lay my tent?

I never watch the long weekend dramas but I will have to check this one out because JI is in my top five faves in dramaland ever, and in terms of script, I think it was the best one I have seen. I wish we could cart the whole acting crew over from JI too, because they were dynamite!
Anyway great news the writer's got something else coming up. I'll be watching anything she writes from hereon in.

I hope its not going to be 50 episodes as I won't be able to watch it. 20 episodes drama is the limit for me, I couldn't imagine the sense of loss after watching 50 episodes especially when you really like the character (one of the reason I tend to avoid lenghty drama).

Oh man, I loved Lee Da-hae in My Girl! Watched her and liked her in Miss Ripley, too, but haven't really seen her in anything else lately. Oh, I saw a snippet of that one reality show she's in now with a few other actressses, but that's it. Would love to see her in something good again.

Aw, I loved Pasta! I think that was the first drama I got my high school friend into. I was watching it at the time and told her about it, she was interested, and I ended up watching it together with her from beginning to end. I think that was her gateway drama. She's one of my few success stories. Heh. Anyways, while I thoroughly enjoyed Pasta, I didn't finished Jealousy, but I've heard plenty of good things about it. I really like the overall casual tone of both of those dramas (or was it the Gong Hyo-jin effect?), so I'm looking forward to find out more about this new project and omg, if it's anything like High Kick or Potato Star (I'm having a blast watching that rn), then yes please, count me in!

SBS paid highest price for writer (100 milion won/ep for weekend dramas). I loving Unnie Is Alive now. The story is addicted, strong and big, which so many interested characters in.

Unni Is Alive is coming from the popular and hit makjang writer who wrote My Daughter Geum Sa Wol, Jang Bori Is Here, Temptation of Wife etc, so it makes sense for SBS to pay a lot. As far as I know, there are two drama got remake so far - Jang Bori has China remake, Temptation of Wife got Philiphines remake. So this could explain how popular these drama actually.

I'm also hoping this won't be a 50-episode drama, cos I love JI. I kinda started trying to watch Ojyakko Brothers, but I don't think I'm going to be able to stick through it. I was motivated by the Dramabeans Top 10 posts, and how the OTP in Ojyakko Brothers was so convincing, etc., but...but...either I'm gonna have to fast-forward my way through it, or I'll need to give up altogether.
