Going back to school, finding new faces for Cheese in the Trap movie

Okay, so maybe Park Hae-jin (Man to Man) and Park Ki-woong (Monster) are a smidge past high school uniform age, but I can’t deny that I’m looking forward to seeing them reinterpret the frenemy-bromance of Jung and In-ho in the movie remake of slice-of-life campus romance Cheese in the Trap, which began filming two weeks ago. What can I say? I still feel a little burned by the drama, but I can’t stay away; I need to see how this version works out!

Park Hae-jin reprises his role from the tvN drama as Yoo Jung, the smart, rich, seemingly perfect popular guy who shows glints of a mysterious, darker inner side. Those flashes of darkness go largely unnoticed by most people, but not the perceptive heroine, Hong Seol, played here by Oh Yeon-seo (Come Back, Ajusshi). Park Ki-woong’s character, Baek In-ho, had been poised for a brilliant piano career until a misunderstanding ruined his dream and drove a wedge in his friendship with Jung; in the present day, In-ho is all simmering resentment toward his former friend.

These stills must be from their happier days when they were still best friends, given the easygoing vibe and the friendly smiles. I find it hilarious how much older the guys look compared to the younger-looking extras surrounding them, but I wouldn’t prefer other actors playing their younger parts (there’s so much emotion derived from watching them play their own backtories out), so I’m closing an eye to that.

And it’s not something the film’s director, Kim Je-young (director of So I Married My Anti-Fan, writer of Wonderful Radio and Wonderful Nightmare), hasn’t considered. In a recent interview, Kim said, “I saw that there were even online comments asking if the movie would be at a night college or if it would be ‘Professor in the Trap.’ I know that there are some concerns about the casting in that regard. However, to be honest, I don’t worry about those reactions. What’s most important is how well these actors can express these characters. Cheese in the Trap is a project where the depiction of the characters’ psychologies is extremely important, so I think the most important thing is to have actors who know how to act in these roles.”

Of his main cast, director Kim said, “To be honest, Park Hae-jin’s image as Yoo Jung is so strong that it was a bit discomfiting. Even though Hae-jin-sshi is extremely warm and well-mannered. But I didn’t want to crack this ‘peculiar discomfort.’ I thought that aura would ultimately suit Yoo Jung, and I started to think of how I would use it in the film. Oh Yeon-seo is just as her reputation says, really refreshing and easygoing. I could talk with her comfortably from the first time I met her. She has a wonderful energy. Yoo In-young is as tough as her Baek In-ha character. Because Baek In-ha is the most manhwa-like character, she’s actually the hardest to express, but I believe Yoo In-young will be able to find it. When I first met Park Ki-woong, I could feel an ease about him. I found we communicated very well. He’s also very knowledgeable, and watches a lot of movies for reference. I got a strong feeling that he is an actor who works hard.”

There’s also the concern of remaking the same concept for a different format, and using the same actor for both. Director Kim stated that he gave a lot of thought to that, and particularly how to find a fresh angle when Park Hae-jin had already played the character and gotten a lot of praise for his first depiction. He said, “I found that it wasn’t just me who deliberated over that, but Hae-jin-sshi did too, and we spoke a lot about it. We definitely want there to be a difference in the acting of Yoo Jung from the drama version, but we can’t turn the Yoo Jung we know into a completely different character. If the drama showed six or seven different aspects of Yoo Jung, rather than drawing the character anew, we’re aiming to show two or three more new sides to him, to show eight or nine total. To achieve that, Hae-jin-sshi has been deliberating over every line and small detail, checking over everything extremely closely. I think Hae-jin’s shoulders will be feeling heavy.”

Aside from the high school stills released today, we also have a few candid pictures that were uploaded online by fans that feature Oh Yeon-seo on campus and wearing Seol’s trademark curly reddish hairstyle. They’re grainy and blurry, but they’re better than nothing!

The supporting cast includes Yoo In-young (Goodbye Mr. Black) as In-ho’s reckless and flighty older sister, Baek In-ha; 2NE1’s Sandara Park as Seol’s best friend Bora; Healer’s Oh Jong-hyuk (he played Park Min-young’s reporter father who died young) as stalker creep Oh Young-gon; and Moon Ji-yoon as another carryover from the tvN drama, once again playing the bullying Sang-chul sunbae.

Cheese in the Trap began filming last month, and expects to shoot for three months total. No word yet on a release schedule, but it looks likely to be late this year or early next.

Park Kiwoong ???
He looks so young with his forehead covered. The past few roles I've seen him in have been with shirt bangs or completely pushed back hair. It's a nice change to see him with his hair down

I thought the drama would be the drama-of-my-life *since I was in my first year of college when it started airing* but then we all know what happened.

I'm hoping the movie becomes the movie-of-my-life, but I don't want to expect too much.. huhuhu :(

It is somehow funny...they changed the other actors but the Yoo Jung stays as the Yoo Jung.
It's like the Yoo Jung from the drama moved to another world to create another college life with new Seol, Inho, etc.

I think it's better when you view this as an totally different film, with no connection to that god awful drama.
It's like the reverse Bat man with 2 different actor play the same role in less than 4 years. If that make any sense

Yeah, but I can't imagine anyone else taking this character, I don't think anyone could portray Yoo Jung as well as Park Hae-jin did! Maybe one of the reason he accepted this role is because he felt his character's story was left unfinished and he wanted to properly tell it this time!

There can be only one Yoo Jung, and that's PHJ. Even if they remake this 10 years from now, middle-aged PHJ would still play the role of the high schooler.

You Jung is such a sad character honestly! I'm looking forward to a more complete portrayal of Yoo Jung in the movie :) i know Park Hae Jin can do it!

Yoo Jung often came across as a sociopath in the drama, so this entire thing is giving me the weird feeling that that's EXACTLY what Yoo Jung did - his original Seol and script didn't work out, so he just moved to another city and created the circumstances where he could have a re-do....

Except that is not his original Hong Seol, or script. So he move on and find his "real Seol".
Why everybody called that drama "original"? Its just another adaptation and a fail one.
Sorry if i come off as agressive but please have some regard to the real original.

Well the idea for this movie to be made if because of the CITT mess and Park Hae Jin's dissatisfaction, so this is enough reason why he is the only one casted. If they casted all actors on the drama to be in this movie, it will be hard to distinguish from one and another. They are probably wont be very comfortable to act with each other again, for the similar project.

Now imagine what i went through , with this being my real first intro intro to k-dramas and fandom , the first time i really got interested or even cared to know what are k-dramas .

i watched it this year i think February march , and am still in pain , i felt sooo cheated ... I literally CANNOT trust any k-drama anymore , i know they will back stab me so the first sign of nonsense i drop the drama , but then again i haven't watched much 10-20 ...

"Ah, Cheese In The Trap, the love of my drama-life, the bane of my existence, my eternal frenemy; I continue to love you and hate you for what you did to us. We could've been...been...*sigh*."

^^ THIS sums up how i feel .... i still have night mares and am still to find a PHJ drama that didn't piss me off , i refuse to watch YFAS because SLS... but this will still be the best k-drama to me well the first part( and then some) anyway

i would have preferred a season two , but beggars have no choice , so please tv gods have mercy on my poor heart and sanity and make this movie a-AMAZING ... I i promise to never insult another show again ...

I'm excited to finally see the first pictures and I'm getting good/positive impressions from them so far. The entire cast have quite big shoes to fill, because no matter what I think about the drama, the cast was close to perfection! Park Hae Jin definitely must have a lot of pressure since he is reprising his role as Yoo Jung but it is good to see that he is doing his best along with the director to give him an improved image on the big screen.

I'm also looking forward to see Oh Yeon Seo as Hong Seol, the pictures don't give out much, but I'm crossing my fingers she'll have a killer chemistry with Park Hae Jin!

I just don't see how they can condense the storyline into a satisfying movie. It will surely feel shallow. Perhaps a couple movies could tell the story effectively.

I really enjoyed the Chinese drama Love O2O, so much so that I also watched the movie version and read a translation of the book. While the TV show padded itself to go up to 30 episodes, 100% of the book content was included which was nice. The movie, unfortunately, did not work for me. It wasn't a case of me not seeing favorite parts that didn't make the cut: it just didn't have enough to tell the story. The leads fell into their relationship with almost no build up. I didn't buy the chemistry. The story was truncated and while that was ok by itself what they came up with as a finish was just not very impactful. I expect this movie is going to feel similar.

I really enjoyed the first half of CITT when I first watched it but wasn't AS head-over-heels in love as some other people, so I think the burn wasn't as bad on my end. Nevertheless, I am apprehensive about this. Like other people have said, I have my reservations about this story in a movie format.

Gotta give it to the webtoon fans who insisted on having Oh Yeon Seo as Seol, her resemblance to the character is uncanny to say the least. I've read a bit of the webtoon and I must say I do totally see it too. She is so on point in these pics it's crazy. Without having seen her acting before, I can only hope she delivers the nuanced performance this character needs. Kim Go Eun did a wonderful job, but I don't believe it's impossible for anyone else to pull it off. When I started reading the webtoon, I did get kind of a different vibe from Seol compared to the drama portrayal, so I'm curious if she'll be able to translate that on screen.

Park Ki Woong looks like he hasn't aged much of anything compared to when I first saw him in the horror movie Someone Behind You many years ago. His still kind of gives me the creeps because of that XD

I usually don't have much problem separating between different adaptations of the same work, so I am really looking forward to this new version. The drama could have been so much more, but fell inexplicably short of all expectations and all it had built in its first half. My only concern is how they will be able to fit everything in the running time of a movie. As a psychological slice-of-life, getting the tone and the character development right is vital for it to work. Even if it ultimately falls short, I already know I cannot NOT watch it, so bring it on!
