Book & OST giveaway: I Believe in a Thing Called Love

We’ve got a fun new giveaway for you from the author of upcoming YA novel I Believe in a Thing Called Love, which is about a drama-lover who employs romance tricks and tropes from her favorite K-dramas in an effort to jumpstart her love life (I’m sure we’ve all seen enough dramas to imagine how well that goes over). For a chance to win a signed copy of the book and a drama OST, enter below!

Here’s a message from author Maurene Goo:

Hi, everyone! You might remember that a few months ago javabeans and girlfriday were kind enough to interview me about my upcoming YA novel, I Believe in a Thing Called Love. Since the book is about a girl trying to snag a guy using the “steps” she finds in K-dramas, well, sharing this book with Dramabeans readers was a no-brainer. Not only that, javabeans and girlfriday were kind enough to consult and brainstorm with me so that I could make sure the K-drama facts were right and they helped me create the K-drama starter guide in the back of the book, as well.

And in the years that I took to write this book, I’ve learned about the incredible fandom through this website, and have become a newbie fan myself (I’ve watched K-dramas since forever but am a total lightweight when it comes to K-drama knowledge, and I’m in awe of all of you!). Basically, I’m incredibly grateful that Dramabeans exists.

So, in celebration of my book coming out this month on May 30, I’m offering a giveaway to Dramabeans readers! There will be two winners selected—both will win signed copies of my book, plus either the Healer or Goblin original soundtracks (two of my favorites!).

To enter, just answer this prompt in your comment below: Tell us about your favorite drama love triangle!

And if you want a copy of my book for yourself, giveaway be damned, you can pre-order through Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

Contest Rules:

  • Leave a comment below telling us about your favorite drama love triangle.
  • Post as many comment entries as you want, through Sunday, May 14, at 12:00 noon, Pacific Time. (Here’s a handy-dandy time zone converter, so you can figure out what that is in your local time.)
  • We will email winners directly.

Can this also be an unofficial Beanie vote for best love triangle of all dramas? Because I'm going to put in my vote for Healer as well! Love triangles usually get on my nerves, but the trope was used so refreshingly in Healer! Sure, as Healer, Seo Jung Hoo got in his cool super hero rescue moments, but it was as Park Bong Soo that he and Young Shin actually got to develop a mutual understanding and trust on which to build a relationship. The jealousy that Healer had for Bong Soo was not only a longing for an honest relationship with Young Shin, but for an honest relationship with the rest of the world - to be able to live a normal life, and that theme tied in so well with the entire drama.

The love triangle was perfect for the comedy AND angst!

Another one...I'm suddenly realizing there were lots of good ones last year.
Kim Bok-joo/ Jung Joon-hyung/ Joon-hyung's brother in WFKBJ.

I loved their dynamic. Joon-hyung was helping Bok-joo with her romance with his hyung, but then he fell for her. And after she got rejected from his hyung, she also fell for Joon-hyung.
I suddenly want to re-watch it.
And I can't leave without commenting that that ship has sailed, since they're now dating in real life. HA! Double OTP

One more favorite love triangles was in I Remember You-aka. Hello Monster. As my all time favorite show, although the love line was not specifically emphasized as the most important plot line, I love the interactions between Jang Na Ra, Seo In Guk, and Park Bo Gum. When the bromance is strong, (literally, they are brothers) and Jang Na-Ra is scoring 15+ alpha, the highest score in their own task force (in terms of how much Lee rates them on his likability meter), this is definitely a show you can't forget. Remember to say hello to the monster.

I nearly chose this one! It was a love triangle because the bromance was so strong you just wanted him to spend time with his brother, but then the love line, ah, so great!

I was near naming it, because Min was most definitely jealous of other contenders for Hyun´s attention, and then we have the other psycho, hence it is not a triangle but a square. Ji-An was defending her corner nicely & holding the fort, though, I never thought it was threatened by anyone. It was Joon Young who had no chance in ever having equal significance as Min did. Min was 1st priority and Ji An 2nd just like the points given...

So hard to choose a love triangle! I think I'll go with the one where I, an OTP lover, was unsure of who belonged together: Oh My Ghostess. The thing that made this particular love triangle so difficult, was that how was the chef (Jo Jung Seok) to even know which girl he was in love with, when they both inhabited the same body? I believe that he unknowingly cared for Park Bo Young before Kim Seul Gi possessed her, but without Seul Gi's outgoing shenanigans, there is no way Jung Seok would have spent the time with Bo Young to fall in love. And with both girls loving him, when he learned his girlfriend had been possessed for a lot of the time he was falling in love with her, of course he would be concerned with whether he truly loved her or the ghost. Sigh... such drama... I loved it. ^_^

Reply 1988. Never has a love triangle caused such uproar, such contention, such heated arguments as this one. Forget Team Edward or Team Jacob. It was all about Team Taek or Team Jung-hwan. Plus, I may or may not get bragging rights for choosing the winning side of this love triangle. ?
Doek- sun you chose well...

I think it might be Kill me Heal me with the Oh Ri-jin, Cha Do-hyun and Shin Se-gi Triangle. I was so torn with who to pick because they were like different people since they had such contrasting personality even though they're the same person and I just couldn't chose.

my favorite love triangle was the one from heirs, even though it tore my heart to pieces and Choi Young-Do never had a chance against Kim Tan. They were both so fun to love! Often times the drama was more enjoyable because of their schemes more than anything else.

One of my first dramas (probably one that solidified my Kdrama addiction) was My Girl.
Oh, the pain of that second lead shipping was horribly sweet. I have never wavered so much between who I wanted to end up with the girl in my drama watching years as I did with Lee Dong Wook as Seol Gong Chan and Lee Jun Ki as Seo Jung Woo.

Another one that comes from the Flower Boy Next Door, Enrique/ DokMI/ JinRak, both male contenders were so good for her.

To me it would have to be The Best Love. Never have I ever seen a drama where the lead and 2nd lead are so petty, hilarious and lovable at the same time! Dok Ko Jin is one of my ultimate favorite drama leads but he faced some serious competition from Pil Joo. The way they competed against each other (anybody remember the sneaker auction scene? Or when they were arguing because "just nobody" could not possibly carry the sneakers?) was pure gold. Ae Jung was honestly moved by both guys (and who could blame her?) because they were both swoon worthy. I still get all giddy when Pil Joo gave her all the roses during the contest. I know we all suffer from the 2nd lead syndrome but seeing Pil joo walking down the stairs as he finally gave up still brakes my heart to this date. And now excuse me while I go re-watch this drama for the 37th time.

Jealousy Incarnate. Hands down one of the best. With 4 or 5 love triangles, it was packed. I laughed, I cried, I giggled and I swooned. ......kill me heal me..... Can you compete with ji-sung's multiple personality? Ji-sung loves jung eum, but ji-sung also loves seo-joon who loves jung-eum. ....... Confused yet! It's such a treat to watch.
.........she was pretty was also good because though si-won was only the second lead you can't help but root for him. He was earnest, carefree, and loving,,, it was heartbreaking.

The Greatest Love
Even though I loved Dokko Jin and Ae-Jung together I couldn't help but root for Pil Joo. He is sweet, caring, wants to make Ae-Jung happy. If only he hadn't been the second lead.?.
I remember the episode when he gives her the three roses and tells her that he likes her.❤️. I thought it was pretty romantic and Pil Joo was demonstrating to Ae-Jung how much she meant for him. I wished in that moment that she would have chosen Pil Joo.??

Favorite drama love triangle? Since love triangle happens in almost every drama it's very hard to choose. But I'll choose gentleman dignity. Choi yoon- Meahri- Colin. Why because this love triangle is unique.... Meahri just completely focusing on choi yoon even though she know colin is into her and her comment when she ask colin to play at her wedding its just so meahri. And colin is not a sore loser too... he even talk that his first love is marrying his father friend while smiling. And for choi yoon, this love triangle is not really important since he still mourning his wife.

Jejungwon The Hospital
How could I not cheer for Hwang Jung when he is able to win Yoo Seok-Ran's love. I remember the first scene when he sees her at the market and thinks that she is talking to him but she is not. It was sad because it makes him realize that he who is from the lowest rank, a butcher's son, who is simply known as "Little Dog," will never be able to know someone like her.
But then slowly he begins to fight for his dream of been a doctor and that is when he gets a chance to win Yoo Seok-Ran's heart. And he shows his love to her. He encourages her, respects her, praises her, understand her, saves her life, and that smile that he gives to her, to me is pretty beautiful. To me that smile said it all, how much he loves her.
Yoo Seok-Ran, she also shows her love to Hwang Jung. When he is struggling about to quit his dream she does not let him. She fights a long side him. She is also smart, determine, caring, they are one of my favorite OTP's.?❤️

Beyond the Clouds

Jung Se-Ro and Han Young-Wo love story was to me one of the best. I cared about them so much with each episode that I really wanted them to be happy. Their journey of finding out the truth, of understanding that it was not their fault, that they can be together.
And their last scene together, to me is one of the best endings I have seen. It was satisfying because they have found their happy ending.

One of my favorite triangles is Cha Yoo Jin, Naeil, and Lee Yoon Hoo in Tomorrow's Cantabile. It was a typical love triangle with Yoo Jin being the cold lead who doesn't really appreciate Naeil unless she's in danger of being taken away from him by Yoon Hoo, the sweet second lead. Even though I could tell that Naeil and Yoo Jin would end up together, I couldn't help but sympathize with Yoon Hoo a little bit. This was one of the first triangles I saw and will probably always be one of my favorites (especially since Yoo Jin and Yoon Hoo are played by Joo Won and Park Bo Gum).

For some reason, the love triangle/square between the leads of Shining Inheritance (or Briliant Legacy) comes to mind. This drama will also hold a special place in my heart as that special little drama that could - a low-key drama that steadily gained momentum (and fans by the legions throughout its run), making stars of the leads. And look at where they all are now! All well-recognized household names: Han Hyo-Joo, Lee Seung Gi, Moon Chae Won, and Bae Soo-Bin!

Hmm.. favorite love triangle.. way too much to choose from but the first thought I had was Ji-soo because oof this puppy and his love triangles break my heart </3

But after thinking about it, the love triangle in Sungkyunkwan Scandal was my favorite: Kim Yoon-hee, Lee Sun-joon, and Geol-oh. The drama as a whole was really cute and the main couple was cute but GEOL-OH AND HIS HICCUPS :') It was one of the first dramas I've ever watched and also the first time (I think) I've ever experienced such major second lead syndrome. At least he has Goo Yong-ha ;)

From Dawson's Creek (Team Pacey!) to Gilmore Girls (Team Jess!)... I especially enjoyed the angst/melodrama love triangles!

My favorites have been:
Recent ones: Jealousy Incarnate, Discovery of Romance, The Innocent Man
Past: Que Sera Sera, Whatever Happened in Bali
TW-drama: Ex-Boyfriend, Meteor Garden
J-drama: Moto Kare

OMG I cant just choose one so I'm gonna say Jealousy Incarnate. Because its kind of a struggle they're best friends who likes the same girl. And the girl likes them both. And I really liked the chemestry betwen them, for me was pretty real. Thats why they're my favorite triangle love.

It's not my favourite drama and I'm sure if rewatched now it might come across as a little overdramatic, but my favourite drama love triangle is between Kim Ha Neul, Lee Dong Gun, and Kim Sung Soo in 유리화, Stained Glass Window. It doesn't really play out like your typical kdrama so it's stayed at the back of my mind - for over a decade.

Triangle: Shin Chae Kyung // Prince Lee Shin // Prince Lee Yul

This was my first exposure to k-dramas. Yoon Eun Hye was so fresh and adorable, Joo Ji Hoon was the perfect ice prince, & Kim Jeong Hoon made me patient zero of second lead syndrome!!!

This is one drama I can re-watch and enjoy, time and time again.

To be honest, I only have few second-lead favorites but one love triangle that pierced my heart is Chef Kang-Bong Sun-Ghost Sun-ae of Oh My Ghostess. My heart broke when Chef realized that he might have fell in love with the ghost and not with Bong-sun. The sadness Bong-sun felt when she realized that possibility as well. But I really cried for Sun-ae because she knows that she will never even get the chance to fight for Chef's love, or any other man's love.

I love how half the people here said Healer BECAUSE I THOUGHT HEALER TOO. Hahahaha It's the kind of faux (but just as angsty) love triangle that I think we can all swallow. An all-out heart-wrenching love triangle like MDBTC's Crown Prince-RaOn-YoonSung is too much for my heart so please save everyone's sanity and have a love triangle where everyone is happy in the end Producer-nim~~

In a similar vein, I also liked the love triangle in Lee Jun Ki's Iljimae. That one was total reverse of Healer because he never REEAALLLY reveals his true self to Han Hyo Joo's character but like Young-shin she falls in love with the vigilante first then falls for the commoner guy that he actually is. But ending is so melo :(

Hands down, Answer Me 1988.

What makes a love triangle a favourite might be different from one person to another. I hated love triangle, I hated falling in love with the 2nd lead instead of the 1st, I hated it when the girl chooses the guy I didn't root for, and worst of all, the painnnnn you have to live with the rest of your life for rooting for the wrong couple. I despise that so, so much. And Answer Me 1988 gave me exactly all that. I hated the triangle so much that it scars me for life. But again, that's what love triangle is all about - engaged you to both ends of the triangle, squishing your heart to pieces, and leaving you with 800 years of pain. So despite all the scars, deep inside I have reluctantly acknowledges that the love triangle between Jung Hwan, Taek and Doek Sun was so impactful, and annoyingly stays a favourite of mine.

Ooh.. book as giveaway! Awesome!
My Favourite love triangle is sassy go go. Because I could totally understand why both guys would fall for kang yeon doo. Because she made both of them trust her in some level and inspired them too. Even though it was a youth drama, I think the love triangle was treated in a much more mature way than in most adult dramas. I remember three scenes in particular:
1. When Yeol found out that ha joon also has feelings for her and they wouldn't talk for sometime. When they talk, ha joon would be like its no big deal I can hide my feelings and yeol would be like "how is that not a big deal?!" It just touched me that even though he confessed to her first and she also liked him back, he didn't neglect ha joon's feelings or deem it useless.
2. When ha joon confesses to yeon doo using gummy bears. He would do it to let her know of his feelings but without making her feel awkward or embarassed, it would be like he thanks her for making him feel those things.
3. When in the end ha joon would tease yeon doo to come back to him incase things didn't work out with yeol. It just shows that all three of them has acknowledged their feelings for each other and that nothing has tarnished their friendship.

STRONG WOMAN DO BONG SOON's love triangle of Min-hyuk (Park Hyung-sik), Bong-soon (Park Bo-young) and Gook-doo (Ji Soo)!!!

A Kdrama fangirl's absolute dilemma is to have two guys who are equally talented and good-looking be both pining for the same lead girl. While I was rooting for Min-hyuk and felt him receiving Bong-soon's love was well earned, I was heartbroken at the same time for Gook-doo who would've loved Bong-soon with as much passion and devotion had he been more brave about telling her how he truly felt about her at the time when she still felt the same about him. Both guys competing for Bong-soon's affections was adorable and endearing. This drama made me wish that Gook-doo finds his own happy ending even if we won't be there to see it for ourselves.

My favourite although this will make me look like a psycho was in Gaksital. Call me a sadist but I really loved that his love for the girl he could not have brought out the worst in him but still made him humane enough to believe he could still be good if they ever went back to how they were. After that it would be the Clark Kent Healer then I hear your voice as both the choices we're really great for the heroines involved

Ugh!! There's just so many!! But as soon as I saw this post from @girlfriday, 1 particular love triangle came to mind right away:

- "Save Your Last Dance for Me"
Kang Hyun Woo a.k.a. "Chang Ho/ Ji Eun Soo/ Jung Tae Min

The thing that tugs at me the most is when an OTP is able to endure and pass through and experience hardships and still be able to be together in the end, and this drama, and it's OTP and love-triangle, is the PERFECT example of all of this:
Despite losing his memory--twice over, no less-- Hyun Woo ("Chang Ho") still remembered that was Eun Soo who was the one who save his life, literally, and who was the one who risked it all just to search for him, simply wanting to know that he was doing alright, even if it meant that there was a possibility that he had already forgotten her and that a life with him wasn't possible anymore. He is always so open and so raw with her, never hiding anything from her, regardless if it is good or bad. He shares everything with her.
Then on the other side of the triangle, we have Tae Min, who finally finds true love for the first time in his life and wanting to do everything in his power to make her happy, but sadly he fails because he just couldn't fully understand what it truly means to love someone respectfully and whole-heartedly: he was masked by his heart for revenge and wanted the one he loves to only see his 'good' side and ended up hiding things from the girl and eventually, albeit unintentionally, hurting the love of his life.

My favorite drama love triangle is definitely Lee Hwashin x Pyo Nari x Go Jungwon! I think this is the most intense I've seen so far. Hwashin and Jungwon are best friends fighting over a girl - imagine already. I understand where Nari is coming from though; she's confused between the two since she's been (unrequitedly) crushing on Hwashin for years but here comes ideal Jungwon who likes her! Srsly I recommend this drama because of this argument alone. Lels ^^

I guess, for an out-of-the-box favorite love triangle, I'll pick a Thai drama for something new titled Ugly Duckling: Perfect Match. Suea|Joo|Ning. It's a super cute romance, and the guy's endless flirting ways just to get the girl although the girl is suffering from extreme pimples during that time. To end this, they're super otp and this is a drama that you'll never be able to resist from watching again.
